Great Product Saves money and food
April 8, 2017
I Love this food sealer! It maybe big and bulky but it works so much better than the smaller one I'd gotten at a local department store that died after just 4 months of owning it with little use. So far I've only used it to seal packs of meat, that I buy in "Family size/bulk". but it works great, and everything unthaws so much nicer than being wrapped in saran wrap and or tin foil and put into a freezer bag. I haven't had any freezer burn or ice crystals on any thing either. I have recommend this to family and friends who also buy in bulk, and who can as well.
So Much Better Than High Priced Models
November 25, 2015
I have had this model food saver in years past and when it died, I went to a fancy-dancy auto-feed model. And here I am back to the first model I owned because it works so much better than the more expensive model. It is so much easier to seal a bag where you want it sealed and not an automatic 2 or more inches in. The auto model continually stopped working when the liquid tray was wet. I would have to wait until the next day to continue sealing items. Definitely not the case with this model, empty the tray and it's ready to go. I'm very happy with the simple, easy to use model. It seals quickly and well, except when the bag is wet. OK, so I dry the bag before sealing.
Hunting/Fishing - FoodSaver works for me!
November 12, 2015
To start, I am a hunter/fisher and have used various vacuum sealing systems before, HARD. One thing about commercial systems is though they're very reliable, they are also super expensive. What FoodSaver has brought to the table is a cost-effective sealer that I don't tear up over if I have to replace. The V3240 comes out of the gate with a strong suction, great button set, and very user friendly. I have had absolutely no problems with it so far. The one thing I am looking for over the long run is durability given my use for it, and also if the heat seal strip holds up and doesn't overheat the packaging or fail to heat and seal properly. In the past my other FoodSavers have eventually done one of these, but after very heavy use. I definitely got my money out of those work horses. Would recommend this product to anyone.
A great sealer for the price range!
March 10, 2015
A friend has a chamber sealer and it definitely is better in many ways, but at multiple times the price, it's certainly not a bargain! This device does everything I need! I seal soup (no vacuum, obviously), meat, veggies, etc. in it without any problems. It takes a while to get used to sealing moist items, as you have to press the "seal" button just as the liquid begins to wick up the bag, but having to do that saved me a substantial chunk of money over models that would do it themselves. The seal is excellent, and works even for items that are not easily bagged (hard veggies cut into jagged pieces, etc.)In my sous vide, these bags are perfect. You can see immediately the quality of the seal you get, and if there are any imperfections, you can re-seal the bag before immersing. I've never lost a seal on a bag in the 2 months I've been using this (constantly!) and I feel that I'm eating at home far more often, now!

This foodsaver is amazing. I have saved so much money by not having to throw out food that has gone bad. I use this food saver for chicken and fish. Recently I sealed half a avocado that I had left over so that I didn't turn brown. I love it.
Easy to Use
September 1, 2014
PROS: There is a place to store and cut your vacuum bags, which is very convenient. The 'moist' and 'gentle' functions work well. I have not tried the accessory connection yet.The 'vacuum & seal' system is very convenient. Most of the time you can just press the button and it will do everything for you. However, it is not TOO automated, so you can customize the extent of your vacuuming. In other words, you can cancel the 'vacuum & seal' before it seals, and you can vacuum for even longer if needed by pressing the 'vacuum & seal' button again. There is also a 'seal' only button that allows you to seal anything.CONS: The seal is slightly weak and easy to tear open, so I recommend sealing twice in the same spot, and doing the same at another location on your bag. It's a little noisy, but not above average for vacuum systems.

Wowee, am I glad I bought this!
September 12, 2017
This is one of those purchases where you say, 'How did I ever live without this?' The first thing I did was run down to the local grocery store's annual meat sale and load up. Bagged and froze everything. It is really easy to use and does a lot of things besides just seal bags. Really glad I bought it and recommend it to everyone!
Exactly as advertised.

This thing isn't built tough, but it sure does the job. Have used it on meats, breads, seeds, and even cookies with great success in every application.
All in one vacuum sealer - Six month UPDATE
August 27, 2016
This is my first vacuum sealer, and once grasping how to use it, I am impressed with the ease of use and storage capability inherent in vacuum sealers. The 4840 is functionally identical to the model 4440, with the differences being that the control panel is located on the upper edge of the unit as opposed to the lower edge on the 4440, and the 4840 has brushed stainless side panels. I thought having the control panel on top would be a good thing (in use it doesn't really make a difference), and I found the brushed stainless steel chassis wrap attractive... neither affects the function of the sealer, and a buyer can get the same functionality and save $30 by purchasing the 4440.The learning curve is easy, aided by YouTube videos.Automated sealing works well, and the amount of vacuum can be controlled from the panel for fragile items or partial vacuum sealingThe attached hose unit is used for sealing vacuum zipper bags or vacuum sealing jars or drawing a vacuum in a marinating dish.In addition to the roll bags, zipper bags and bottom sealed bags are available, as are accessories for vacuum sealing jars and accelerating marinating dishes.HINTThe amount of material necessary to be fed into the sealing slot to make a bag was more than I expected, resulting in a slight amount of wasted bag material. I found it best to use what appears to be a generous amount of bag material from the roll, as the machine will not seal if the mating surfaces are not completely in contact. I found that 2 1/2 inches from the edge to the contents in the bag results in a reliable seal.PROSSolid, quality construction, attractive appearanceRoll bag storage in the unit is very handyAll in one vacuum source - bags plus the vacuum hoseCONSIt's big. The roll bag storage means it occupies more space on the counterWould prefer the cord be longerVacuum hose unit works well, but re-storing the hose in the unit can be "fiddly". Likely requires a particular wrist motion or Druid incantation to work smoothly.Would like to see a "manual" mode where the user can control the vacuum and sealing directly, independent of the microchip.sealing the ziplock bags can be frustrating... the bag's vacuum "port' must be absolutely clean and clear of any debris and on a flat surface, or it will not seal, or will "leak down" after sealing. Jury is out on their effectiveness.UPDATE - after almost six months, this has become a "must have" appliance for me, and I am disappointed I took so long to get one.. After purchasing quantities of meat, fish, flour and coffee, I divided and quickly vacuum bagged and froze them. Leftover holiday turkey received the vac bag treatment for later enjoyment. After three to four months, I removed Halibut, Ahi tuna and NY steaks for dinners... No freezer burn, meat and fish as fresh as when they were frozen. I bought 2 lb bags of four different coffee beans, poured a 2 cup daily supply into each of four containers and vac bag/freeze the rest in 2 cup portions. After 10 or so days, I have used the first beans, and replenish the containers from the freezer, maintaining FRESH ground coffee for a couple of months. The zip lock bags have been a major disappointment. I have been unable to obtain a reliable vacuum seal on any of them, despite taking extreme precautions and learning Druid incantations for the purpose :D. Have given up on them.If I had it do do over, am unsure I would spring for the large size unit, but am absolutely certain that I would have a vacuum sealer on the counter.
We absolutely love this thing and you will too... It's worth every penny!!!
January 21, 2016
We absolutely love this thing!!! First of all, why didn't I invent it? It works so well that it practically does it all on its own. Our foods stay fresh so much longer, we consolidate space in cabinets, in the refrigerator and especially in the freezer. Be sure to order additional rolls in all sixes for your cut-to-size needs and order quality zip lock vacuum bags for items that you'll need to open and resell on a frequent basis. I use the resell able bags for cereal, lunch meats, cheeses, candies and so much more. Don't second guess any longer as this unit looks great on the counter and is a very fast sealer that you'll find dozens of uses.
Fun and effective!!!!
December 18, 2015
I love this machine. It is very easy to use. If you have pre-sealed bags(pint, quart, gallon) you just put your food in the bag and press dry or moist and in 15 to 20 secs you have a sealed product. If you have the plastic rolls you can cut the size that you prefer with the cutter installed on the machine (which is in the same compartment as where you store the plastic roll) , press seal button to seal 1 of the 2 free ends, insert the food into the bag you have created, then stick the unsealed end into the machine, 15 secs later done. The cord seals the food saver zipper bags, marinates, and seals canisters. I have only used it to seal the zipper bags. I keep my herbs in those bags. When I need the herbs to cook. I take some out, zip the bag back up, and seal away. I have not use it for canisters or marinating yet. My first bulk food item was the rice. I bought a 20 pound bag on sale and I had a coupon. I split 20 lbs into 4 cups portions. Even when I only need to cook 2 cups of rice I cut the seal, pour 2 cups of rice, and reseal the bag. I have saved a ton of money buying in bulk and using coupons. This machine allows me to preserves the bulk items. For an example, there is no larvae in any of the rice. Additionally, we have a garden. The sealing is just not good for a few things like cabbage and mushrooms. Love it!
Works as described, easy to use Food Saver
September 8, 2015
Food saver is very easy to use and works exactly as advertised. Still getting used to how big to make the bags in order to leave ample sealing space, but will come with experience. Suggest making them a bit bigger at first, then at least you don't waste the bag. Important to note that you can't really seal wet items, including fresh fruit, unless you partially freeze them first; otherwise the juice gets sucked out and interferes with the sealing process. Love the ziploc bags that can be used with the accessory tool. Overall great item and would recommend!

They don't last forever, folks!
May 12, 2017
I'm giving this a high rating because I've owned this model for about 2 years now, with slightly higher than average use, and it has performed well.... until recently, when the vacuum decided to not suck air from the bags. I hoped it might be a seal or something in the vacuum lines for an easy fix, but long story short, I found it to be a problem of too much pressure being applied holding the bag. Somehow a gear inside lost it's position and prevented the vacuum to work as designed. I had to fix it twice, but eventually a pin fell out and I'm not going to bother again. I believe I've gotten my money's worth out of it. This time I'm going with a different model in hopes that I can get more than a few years from it.
better than the smaller, cheaper unit I had before.
March 30, 2017
Damn this thing is loud! Sounds like my air compressor. It works well. Could get rid of the tiny roll dispenser to make it smaller since it will only accommodate skinny rolls. My biggest gripe, true for most devices, is that it will not continue to vacuum while it is sealing, so that it sucks air back in before it's sealed, thus making the concept of a vacuum sealer useless. They should really program these to maintain a vacuum so that you get a good air free package.
Make sure your bag is positioned correctly or it won't properly vacuum.
October 26, 2016
This is my second food saver Vacuum Sealing system. The other one finally gave up the ghost and died on me. I received this unit last night. The instructions aren't very clear so I am going to tell you what my frustration was with it last night. Now that I figured this one stupid thing out, the sealer works very well.YOU HAVE TO INSERT THE BAG INTO THE SLOTS IN THE DRIP TRY ... there are two "V" shaped things in the drip tray. If the bag is not inserted in there the vacuum will not pull all the air out of the bag. How do I know this? Because it took me 7-10 tries to seal 1 bag until I figured that bit out. So if you are having issues with the air being completely pulled out of your bags, investigate that. My old unit wasn't that "touchy" and would seal easily just by locking the handle.Once I figured that out, sealing the 12 pieces of chicken I had cut up the other night before my other one died went very quickly.
Nice, reliable, device
December 20, 2015
Vacuum seals well.I've had it a few months, but used it pretty often in that time and it's had no unique issues. Sealing moist food can be sporty; most things I put in the freezer for 30 minutes or so to solidify just a bit, then seal. Liquids are right out (maybe with the canning attachment, in jars, I don't know). The one major issue I've found is that foods seal more reliably if the bag is at the level of the sealing element, instead of ~1-1/4 inch down. I solved this by putting down a couple of my cutting boards to take up the space, but it might be nice if there was a tray to do the job.The roll storage isn't terribly useful, though the cutter's nice. I think I'd rather a more vertically compact unit that omitted those features.
great buy!

Well i am an everyday cook so i always need to have this sealer for everyday use. Be it for the frozen food, left over food, snack items or even spices. This is very hassle free and worth the money. It vacuums anything and gives you an option to select whether your item is wet or dry. Or you can just select seal without vacuuming air out of it.the rolls are pretty much no brainer and some snack items or spices, i dont even need to use the food saver bag, i just reseal it in the packaging it comes in. i find it handy and hassle free. Best addition yet for my kitchen. Dont have to worry about containers and throwing out stuff after a certain date, definitely a must have,it also have the pump to tighten and seal mason jars for ur veg and juices. It has a drip pan inside so when you vacuum and seal anything wet or meat or with moisture, the drip pan collects the excess water. just take it out, wash it n put it back in.Easy to maintain. Coming from someone whos been reading up each and every other reviews and trying one after another vac sealer, this one is definitely the best ive had.
Vacuum Fun
September 6, 2012
I create sauces and send my family and friends brownies back in the states. It's my first vacuum sealer.I was of course a bit disappointed not being able to by another model for half the price since it did not ship to Korea, but this Food Saver is working just fine. And I thought it would be loud, but it is not. More like a quick hum or small beep, but while it is sealing nothing but silence.I watched a quick video on youtube on it before I bought it to ensure I would know what I am doing.I kind of cheat...I customize the bags even more. I would suggest watching a quick video. Just go to youtube and search the model and brand and there should be a 3 min or less video. Very simple; some people who found out I have it here were upset with the product because they didnt know how to use it.I use the one roll it comes with (also comes with about 4 or so individual bags)and cut them using the cutter, then cut them again in half to make mini bags. It literally does take about 30 secs to seal an end of a bag if not quicker. Do keep in mind that when you have filled your bag and are ready to vacuum and seal it, to make sure it is with the bags' label up and with the curled edge actually going into the drip tray, otherwise it will not suction. Learned this when I was creating oatmeal packets, with dried cranberries in a seperate compartment on the same bag.The instructions on how to use it have words and pictures and are located where the bag is on your Food Saver. I also bought an additional 3 rolls for around $26. 8 in by 20 ft. Which is not too bad since I am being very cautious not to waste an inch of them. You should also have a book in your box, tells you how long you type of food should survive in the bags compared to others, and has how the food was stored. Most food appears to last avg 1-3 according to the book. So far, no regrets. No if I can just figure out how to preserve meat without drying them. Have fun!

July 2, 2017
This has a great vacuum and is versatile for hand held or automatic vacuum. This thing really sucks out all the air. The only part I don't like is sometimes when I put the end of the bag in for sealing it automatically grabs the bag too soon. You have to be precise on where you insert the bag.
No handles
June 21, 2017
Nit picking, but the thing has NO handles. It's heavy. Unless you plan to leave it on your counter-top, look for something that has handles that assist in placing it on lower or higher cabinet shelves. Otherwise, it works great.
Excellent!
April 5, 2017
I'd give it 5 stars but the storage area could be larger (where the plastic roll goes) and I don't think I've ever completed a seal without pushing the seal button manually instead of letting the seal complete on its own.
Space saver
November 30, 2015
Easy to use. Fast sealing. My only gripe is how much moisture gets pulled from fish meat. But to combat sealing issues we put fish steaks in the freezer for 30 minutes to lock in water then vacuseal bags.
Good. Needs to be a little more sensitive!
March 10, 2015
It can be tough to get the bag in there far enough to start the suction process. keep your hands in the middle, curl down on bag, don't over fill, and push more in the center with your fingers on top of the bag. it's easier the second time for some reason. practice with an empty bag sealing one end several times first. DONT OVER FILL!!!!

Bought this as a gift for the wife. So she is writing this review. Would love to say; " I love it", but it didn't work. It would make a bag, once you put the food in the bag and started the machine, it acted liked it worked, but wouldn't seal the bag.The handheld part worked for the zip lock bag. Called Sunbeam and they walked me through some troubleshooting steps, but no go. The rep that I talked to, said the machine may be overheating. Called with the tracking number for the non-working machine and Sunbeam is sending me a new one, even before they recieve the old one. Just not real happy that I have to pay to ship it back. I feel Sumbeam should of paid to have it returned to them. Will come back and write a review for the new one I recieve.

and this was easily the best
March 29, 2017
Been using it for 2 years, mainly for sous vide. Handle recently broke.. it used to lock into place and now it doesn't any more. It takes two people (one to hold the handle up, and one to position the plastic in the seal area) to get the job done. When we first got the device it would erratically malfunction by not drawing the air out of the bag. For some odd reason that issue worked itself out over time. All that being said, I've tried several other vacuum sealers, including another by FoodSaver, and this was easily the best. Unless you're in the market for a commercial chamber sealer I think this is the route to go.
Defective V3240
June 10, 2016
V3240 worked great for about the first occasional 20 uses vacuum sealing dry pre-packaged foods and canisters. Then the vacuum pump stopped working. Customer service, who were very kind and helpful, had me return the unit under warranty for replacement. The warranty deal, as of June 2016, is you pay to ship the unit back to them. Call them with the tracking number and they will ship another unit to you. UPS charged me almost $18 to ship it. Jarden Foodsaver does not provide you with a return address label, I had to make my own. Glad I had saved the original shipping box. Seems like a bit of an antiquated system and I'm out the cost of return shipping a defective unit. Hope I have better luck with the replacement or this review will get a One star rating.
When It Works, It's Great.... When It Doesn't, You'll Wish You Had Invested in ZipLocs Instead
February 1, 2016
This is seriously the most temperamental machine I have ever encountered. If the bag is too big, it won't seal. If the bag is too small, it won't seal. It will seal relatively dry foods fine. It will seal wet, soupy foods like a bag of pasta sauce just fine. It REFUSED to seal slightly wet asparagus, on either the dry or moist settings. I wasted six bags trying, and ended up admitting defeat and using ZipLocs. Annoying, since had I wanted to use zip bags, I would have saved the $130 on this thing. I even made my sister come help, who has one of these of her own. I would also note that if you have a lot of things to seal up, you may want to bite the bullet and just order a ton of premade bags. Trying to create a bunch of bags while also trying to seal up a bunch of food is very time consuming.
Initial Reaction - Details to Follow
April 10, 2015
I just received the unit yesterday, and I unpacked it this morning. There was a loose screw (literally) in the box. I can't find where it belongs. A thorough examination of the exterior of the unit showed that all screws (that were visible) were in place and were tight. The unit appears a bit flimsy. One annoying feature, but a necessary one, is the small suction cups on the bottom of the unit, presumably meant to keep the unit in place while in use. Each time I lift the unit from the table (quite a number of times while I was examining the unit) it felt as though the suction cups would pop out. We'll see what happens over time. I plan to test the unit later today, or sometime over the weekend. I'll give a full report on that test when I'm finished.4/11/15 - UpdateToday we tried sealing a package of chicken wings (seven wings), and a package of pork chops (two pork chops), while packaging the balance of the chicken and pork in regular freezer paper. We used a gallon bag for the wings because it looked as if it would fill the bag. When vacuum sealing, it compressed the package down to a much smaller size. It appears that we could have used the quart size bag for the wings. Also, when sealing the package of wings something went wrong; so, I cancelled the process. I had to switch the food setting from "dry" to "moist." When I did that the vacuuming and sealing process went without any problems. That didn't happen with the pork chops. So far, the product works as advertised. We'll see how well the wings and chops hold up when compared to what was wrapped in the freezer paper.
Not as good as my old Foodsaver Professional II
October 23, 2014
After about 15 years my Foodsaver Professional II began working erratically. After long study of the features and reviews of the current Foodsaver product line I selected the V3240. It seems that they have focused their attention on models that are highly automated, but I could discern no real benefit to the automation features of other models. This may well be the best of the current line, but I have to say it is distinctly inferior to my old Pro II.It is awkward to manipulate the big lever. With the old Pro II you just flop the lid over the bag ready to seal and push a button. The power cord is way too short. It is at most 30" long, severely limiting where the unit can be used. The power cord is coiled on the bottom, so to uncoil it or re-coil it one must turn the unit over, and the big lever flops and the bag roll lid is likely to flop open. Although there is a slot to run the cord through so the unit will rest flat on your counter top, it is a real pain to cram the cord in and pull it out when done. For someone who keeps this out to clutter a counter top the awkward cord may not be an issue, but I want something that I can pull out of a storage cabinet and easily set it up when needed. Some serious redesign of the cord is urgently needed. There is a little removable tray that is supposed to collect liquid sucked from bags and allow the liquid then to be drained and the removable tray cleaned. I find the liquid ends up on the outside of the removable tray in the non-removable and difficult-to-clean slot in which the removable tray rests. There are two suction cup feet. They secure the unit firmly to one's counter top. If you are using this on a boat in rough seas the suction cups may help keep the unit from sliding onto the deck. If you are using this at home I cannot imagine why these would be needed. I look forward to the time when, through normal wear and tear, these loose their suction. I am tempted to snip them with scissors to speed that process.I could list many more complaints about the design, but do not want to nit pick. All in all, this does what one wants a Foodsaver to do, but not as well nor as efficiently as my old Pro II. I hope this one breaks quickly and I hope that by the time that happens the Foodsaver people will have come out with a better designed unit. I am giving it 3 stars through an act of generosity, but I cannot recommend this model, nor any other model in the current product line. But if you are like me and rely on a Foodsaver, but yours has failed, you, too, may need to settle for a V3240.
Too many maneuvers! Update reveiw. This is a Lemon!
January 26, 2013
I have had several FoodSavers over the years but cannot recommend this model. It works fine and pulls a nice vacuum. But I found it a bit cumbersome to use with to many hand movements. My next FoodSaver will be one like all my others, one that lays flat with less steps to operate. I have also noticed a decrease in the quality of bags, they seem full of wrinkles. And the individual that signed off on those new expandable bags should be fired and taken straight to jail! FoodSaver, never sell your soul for the dollar, put your heart and soul into your product!UPDATE REVIEW, THIS IS A LEMON!I had to return this for a replacement. Because you cannot vacuum one item after another. the machine will begin to pull a vacuum and then switch over to the seal mode before the vacuum is complete.I contacted food-saver, they sent me one for a replacement of the same model. But I still have the same problem with the one they sent me.I cannot in any way recommend this model!

sealer works very well but the retractable arm broke after a few months and will no longer retract on it's own. it was not handled roughly. now i have to force it back in after use. although annoying, it's not a huge deal but surprising for such an otherwise well made model.

Retractable sealer problems
November 2, 2015
I like the sealer. Fun and easy to use. But had to return the first one because the motor would not shut off. Then returned the second one because the retractable handheld sealer would not retract. Just received my third replacement. Took it out of the box and checked the retractable handheld sealer....it would not retract. I really like the sealer itself and am tired of having to send them back. After talking to a representative at the company, I decided just to keep it for now as it works fine and just put up with the cord not retracting. Keeping my options open right now, since it has a warranty.

Disappointing compared to older models
April 3, 2017
I bought this unit to replace an earlier food saver that I just wore out. This one never worked as well as my older unit. The automatic closure deal and the suction wasn't as strong. It never got all the air out and when the suction stopped and it went to seal, it let air back in. I didn't notice it at first, but it got progressively worse as time went on. Eventually I stopped using the vacuum feature and just used it to seal chip bags.I also hated the storage unit on top for the roll of bags, it only fits food saver brand bags. The off-brand roll I bought was too fat.
bad bad bad :(
August 6, 2016
Purchased Nov 11 2015 and I'm afraid it stopped working for us practically after the 2nd use. Since we couldn't return it to Amazon as a faulty product we threw it out (amazon accepted return of this item Jan 31st). I'm afraid since we didn't use it regularly we had no idea it would break down on us after the 2nd use.First time: perfect - sealed meat beautifully (2stars = it worked - Once! 1star=faulty from beginning)Second time: some bags had air in it? we thought we just did it wrong. grr.... guess that was it's indication that something was going wrong but we didn't realize it to explore and check.Third time: Machine wouldn't kick start - by then it was after the return date ... grrr....

Our previous Foodsaver was very basic- it vacuumed and sealed but it did it well and was a workhorse. It lasted 12 years. This model has many more features- I especially like the onboard roll storage with the cutter and the no crush vacuuming features. It also has a good motor that creates a strong vacuum seal (so far but more on that later). But that is where the "goods" end. The "bads" start with the excessive bulk. For some vague reason, the top of the unit where the sealer roll is stored extends almost three inches above the top of the roll. That adds more size to an already over sized unit. And to make matters worse there are no handles or grips of any kind to lift it. It is bound to be hard for womens' typically smaller hands to handle. Operating this sealer, compared to our previous one, is a pain. It is unbelievably slow to warm up the heating element and then seal. The slowness makes the worse problem worse. This sealer is very, very, aggravatingly loud- add the slow operating cycle and it almost gets to the point of being unbearable. This does not get a mere 1 star rating only because it does what it is advertised to do. But it does it very poorly. I would not buy this product again and I would not recommend it to a friend. And this is not considering the potential for some kind of malfunction that other reviewers have posted.
Defective - and I have to deal with it.
September 18, 2013
I am not happy about the fact that I purchased this FoodSaver to replace the one I had and it is not sealing. I had one I purchased several years ago that quit sealing so I needed a new one. Did a great deal of research and decided on this one. It runs and doesn't stop. Now I have to contact the manufacturer and go through the hassle. I very much dislike defective products!! Where is product quality control?
Christmas gift 2012
September 2, 2013
I gave this as a gift last Christmas and I just found out that the product has not been working properly. I was very disappointed that she didn't seem to like it when I asked about it, but she didn't really say why. She waited for our summer visit to ask me if I could help her learn to use it, since she'd been having "some problems". I have a previous model that I've used and loved for more that 8 years. We cut some fresh corn off the cob and I proceeded use the unit. It didn't take long to figure out why she didn't like it;It does not create a continuous seal every time; there is about a 3/4" unsealed gap in the same spot near the middle. My mom said that she didn't mention it to me because she didn't know if the problem was caused by something that she was doing wrong, so she just gave up and put the food in a regular freezer ziplock bags. I can assure you that this issue is not caused by user error. I inspected the sealing strip and it was clean and I cannot find anything irregular in its appearance. I was only able to get it to seal completely by holding pressure on the "automatic" bar. I was able to re-try two bags but had to replace 2 other bags. I initially liked the differences between mine and hers such as the upright style. Overall I'm very disappointed because it is defective and I hope that the FoodSaver company will take the initiative to make things right with this unit.
Second unit worse than the first one
August 12, 2013
We had a food saver for several years that worked wonderfully. I purchased it in a retail store for $79.00.I started not working properly last year, so we ordered one of these units from Amazon..Used it a handful of times and it worked, but not as well as our original. It just would not pull the air out of the bags every time. So, the nice folks at Amazon agreed to exchange it for us.I received the new unit on Saturday and only worked properly on 3 of the 9 bags I attempted to seal. It keeps letting air back into the bag as it starts the sealing process. I tried sealing with the bags in every direction. High speed, low speed, dry, moist setting, it did not matter. No matter how I put the bag into the trough, it just would not seal every time.Very disappointing, needless to say. I just don't think they make as good of a product as they once did.

I have had problems with this product since the month after I purchased and have no idea who to contact regardig replacing it.
It does perfect for anything that doesn't have any kind of moisture ...
February 27, 2017
As much as I wanted this to work it's not!!! When we try to seal anything with moisture it always leaves part of the bag unsealed. It is sometimes taking 3-4 times to seal a bag. It does perfect for anything that doesn't have any kind of moisture like hamburger meat, ribs and so forth. Now I just wish I would have known this or I would not have ordered it.
45% fail to seal
January 29, 2017
We have been using this for several months. Venison, jelly beans, metal parts, peanuts, etc. We follow the directions. We use the supplied bags. We use several other vacuum bags sold on amazon. We are exceedingly careful in keeping the sealing surface of the bags spotlessly clean. No matter, we have a failure rate of 45%. The bags all look to seal correctly, but if they are examined 24 hours after sealing we find nearly half are leaking air. If we then take these bags, cut open one end and then carefully put this bag inside another new bag, then seal the new bag... we still find a 45% failure rate! Not impressed.
FoodSaver 4840 2-in-1

Thought this was the one that made it's own bags. It's not. Unfortunately, I gave it to someone for a gift so I can't sent it back.

Wont seal moist food.
March 19, 2016
I had a previous food save model and it worked great. I finally wore it out and needed to replace it. The current models will not seal moist food so I advise that you look elsewhere for an actually usable product.
Another DOA !!!! *** UPDATED TIMES 2
January 18, 2016
I gave this to my wife for Christmas based on the many positive reviews. After the holiday festivities were over we finally tried to use it to seal some country ham. Unfortunately, like some other users, our unit was defective out of the box. It would seal successfully maybe half of the attempts. On some cycles it would close but never seal and then lock in place, other times it would start the vacuum process but continue to run even after the air appeared to be completely out of the bag. When using the roll material, the first step is to seal one end to create a bag. The unit would not complete that process reliably, it would close but never seal. Very frustrating. The good news is that Amazon makes returns very easy. I have a replacement on the way. Hopefully it will be a working unit. After replacing the first defective unit I had high hopes as the second unit appeared to work perfectly. That only lasted 30 days. My wife attempted to use the system last night and it sounded different. It would also not automatically shut off when sealing jars. I am ONE DAY out of the Amazon return window. NEVER NEVER NEVER again with this item.
Vacuum doesn't work
September 11, 2015
Wish I had checked it directly after it arrived but between work and family I never had time. Finally sat down one night.....it looks nice, the heat seal works, the cutter is low quality and the unit does take up some space/it a bit bulky but the biggest thing of all? The vacuum doesn't work and I'm out of the return time frame. Lesson learned. Wasted over 100$ on a unit that doesn't function properly. Highly disappointed.
Awful!
June 30, 2015
I really tried working with this thing as I had several bushels of butter beans to freeze. It will suck the air out without a problem but will not seal properly. I've tried everything but to no avail. Must return and now search for something different. My original food saver was perfect but after many many years finally bit the dust.
Glad I Waited to Review this Product
January 14, 2014
I'm glad that I waited some time in order to review this product because my opinions on the overall device have significantly changed and unfortunately for FoodSaver, it is not for the better.Initially, this is all someone could ask for in a vacuum sealing unit. It has the ability to seal rolls and handle different types of food and liquids based upon an intuitive front button press. It has a nice area to put the roll for storage as well as a convenient cutter tool integrated into the lid to allow you to cut your bags to size. It was fairly hands off and vacuumed to the proper level when needed. All in all, for the first 3-6 months I owned this product I was extremely happy with it.Unfortunately, this product has NOT stood the test of time. I ran into an issue after the machine had not been used for some time. The machine sat on a counter after we moved and vacuum sealing food was not a priority while we settled into our home. Once I tried to use the machine again, I started getting bad vacuums, incomplete vacuums and even situations where it wasn't even pulling any vacuum. I replaced the o-ring glands and tried again and it still was not really fixing the issue.I do like taking things apart, so I brought it down to the workshop and took the entire unit apart looking at the various components to see if there were any issues. The pump appeared to be working properly and eventually was able to diagnose it to the fact that the "automated" clamping was not putting sufficient force down onto the bag/seals in order to allow the bags to be vacuumed properly. So I've come up with a solution, which should not be the case for any $120 dollar machine, I've removed the top of the unit and when I vacuum anything I reach inside and apply additional pressure to the top of the closed unit in order to allow the bags to be properly vacuumed. This consistently has seemed to work but any device that needs to be troubleshot and have me take apart half of the unit in order to reduce the gap between actuated components gets a 1 star review from me.Pros:1. Works great in the beginning2. Allows vacuuming of solids and liquids3. Multiple intuitive settings.Cons:1. Functionality of the device stopped after about 6 months of use.2. Had to remove the cover and need to manually press down onto the actuating portion of the unit in order for it to properly seal bags and take them to vacuum.
What a joke this is
August 19, 2013
This thing lasted 1 month and about maybe 10 total seals then it wouldn't seal..I had to press cancel and try again without any different results..It seals ok but wont vacuum...I just bought a bunch of bags also...this sucks..with so many negative reviews why does Amazon still sell this thing?? I read another review saying that sears model has a money back return..also thinking of taking the extended warranty on the next one i buy...Sending this think back today...

It was not suited for my needs and would not vacuum seal at all.
More expensive model disappoints!
September 10, 2017
Very disappointed for the price paid. I've owned 2-3 previous models of Foodsaver & thought I'd splurge on a more expensive upgrade when my last Foodsaver died. First, it started giving "liquid basin full" error code even though catch basin was emptied. More importantly, it didn't hold the seal on bags that I'd previously sealed a few months ago. All-in-all, a huge disappointment for what was supposed to be an upgrade. My advice to buyers is to stick to their cheaper models & just toss them when they break. Or, go with a more sturdy, reliable brand like Weston-Pro 2300.
Don't buy

Hate this product. Vacuum quit working after only a few months
Auto start feature is terrible
October 3, 2016
I bought this to pair with the umai dry aging bags. The auto start feature on this thing is terrible. You can't see where the seals are going to be created. May work okay for normal sealing by, but terrible for sealing specific locations on the bags.
not worth buying
