Best tent I've ever had.
January 28, 2017
This tent is awesome. It has more than enough room for a family and then some. We have a family of 4 and fit 2 queen air mattresses in it with room for a third or lots of gear. We went camping in 50 degree weather with lots of rain. It kept us warm with the windows closed and dry with the windows open. It retains heat well, we were nice and toasty with just regular bedding, no mummy bags or anything. Plenty of height to stand up and change. I'm 6'0 and have no issue standing upright in it. It's very comfy. It takes about 20 minutes to setup and the same to break down, just make sure you have a helper. This was bought as our family tent to last us for many years and I'm sure it will.
Spacious, Sturdy and dry

Bought this tent after multiple cheaper ozark trail tents from Walmart. There are just two of us but it is perfect for a large queen air mattress, fan, table and multiple bags. We went to my husbands family reunion and had horrific winds and rain during 3 major thunderstorms and there was not a drop of water inside the tent. It stayed stable after it was staked down and the fly straps were staked. It takes 2-3 ppl to set up easily but goes up fairly quick. Very happy with purchase.
Survived a major thunderstorm and stayed perfectly dry!

I bought this tent for my family of four. My wife and I used it for the first time this weekend for a tubing trip without the kids. The two of us set it up in about 10 minutes for the first time and we didn't even fight once! The instructions were written well. I did buy some 10" metal tent stakes to replace the stakes that came with the tent based on other reviews. The temps were in the 90s and I was worried about ventilation because there are small windows in this tent, but the mesh roof seemed to allow adequate ventilation, and we slept fine with our battery operated fans. Our second night we had major thunderstorms. The tent performed exceptionally well under high winds and sideways rain! We did have to close the side windows, but we were able to keep the screen on the door open because the overhang on the rain fly kept rain out. We got 2.5" of rain in a couple of hours and not a drop inside. I did lay a tarp under the tent and I had water between the tarp and the tent floor, but absolutely no water on the tent floor. We used a queen air mattress and it fit perfectly with room to spare on the sides. When we camp with the kids we will put another queen mattress on the other side and still have room for bags and gear in the center. I uploaded a pic of the tent without the rain fly because most stock photos on the web don't show the tent without the fly. I love this tent!
This tent was wonderful this weekend camping

This tent was wonderful this weekend camping , i would have to say my favorite part about this tent is the door . How nice it is not to have to zip and unzip the tent door everytime someone has to go in. We had a total of two adults two toddlers 3 dogs and still had plenty of room. It fit two queen size air mattress with ease , you could probably fit 3 but there would be limited room for your stuff .
Great tent for a Family of 5 with lots of gear!
February 8, 2016
Good Tent. Used it 3 weeks ago. I slept 5. Me, my wife and my 3 boys during a cub scout campout. I had a Queen size air bed and a full size airbed on either end of the tent and still had what seemed like 6 feet of space in between, which I used to set up a 3'x3' roll table and store my gear. The door is very convenient. It can be tricky to get the velcro to lineup, but not a big deal at all. What I really like about the door is the design. I had zipper issues with a previous tent, because of the tension put on the door. This tent zips very easily, and I can see it lasting much longer!! I got a lot of compliments from the other dads too, which is always a plus ;)
Great 2-3 season family tent!
July 7, 2015
As an adult who has just recently returned to the world of camping (I am a leader in my son's cub scout pack), I looked at LOTS of tent options before choosing the Coleman Montana 8 person tent. I checked out reviews on Amazon and CampMor, and talked to as many camping enthusiast friends as I could. My first year in scouting, I borrowed a Eureka 2-person tent from our local boy scout troop, which came up to (maybe) my waist, and just barely fit my full-sized air mattress. After struggling to change clothing while lying down (I could barely kneel, let alone stand), and suffering through a fairly sleepless/stuffy night in the Eureka tent, I decided that the following features were necessary for comfortable camping:1. The ability to stand up fully. This meant that any tent I chose had to have a center height of at least 72", preferably more (my husband is 6 feet tall, and if I ever want him to join us camping, the tent needs to work for him too. The Montana 8 has a center height of 84" (7 feet).2. Room for gear and at least two full/queen sized air mattresses. Although the Montana 8 states that there's room for 8 people, the diagram shows these 8 people sleeping in mummy bags very close together. From a comfort perspective, this tent will hold 4-5 people (and their gear) at a maximum, without feeling overly crowded. For the three of us, this fits the bill nicely.3. Intuitive and easy to set up and take down. While I like camping, I am not an avid camper. Finding a tent that can be set up (and taken down) with only help from a 9 year old was key, and this fits the bill nicely.4. Good cross-ventilation. After sleeping in a stuffy tent once, I didn't want to repeat the experience. Three windows (the two side windows and the door window) can be rolled down to allow for good air flow and ventilation. We rolled the windows down 1/3 of the way, which provided a very comfortable cross-breeze while sleeping.5. Waterproof with a bathtub floor. Many of the reviewers stated that they had no problems with leaks along the seams without using any waterproofing sealant. After talking with others and reading some recommendations, I used the Kiwi Camp Dry Heavy Duty Water Repellent to spray the seams prior to our first use, as added protection. We had some light rain during the evening, and much heavier rain the next morning, and the inside of the tent stayed bone dry.6. Quality. I wanted a tent that would stand up to occasional car camping trips, without having to be replaced on a regular basis. Coleman is a recognized brand, and after talking with folks who own Coleman tents and reading the reviews, I was convinced that this tent would be a good one for our family. So far, I'm pleased!6. Price. Given that we don't do a lot of camping, I didn't want to spend hundreds on a tent. I purchased the Montana 8 in Blue (not the Elite) from Amazon in mid-May 2015, and paid $136.48; a surprisingly low price for this particular tent model/size.Some nice features that this tent offers (that weren't on my list of must-haves):1. A port for electrical/extension cords. While this tent does not have electricity, it does include a port near the door that allows campers to run an extension cord into the tent (for use with lanterns, fans, etc.)2. A covered entry area. I looked at tents that had screened in areas, but opted for this one instead, choosing to have the extra room inside the tent rather than in a screened area. I had two camp chairs outside - in the evening, when it started to rain, I placed the camp chairs under the front rain fly "awning", on either side of the door. Despite the rain, the chairs stayed mostly dry, with only a few drops of water on them.3. A "D door". This door has a pole that threads around the D curve, and another one at the hinge axis, which means that the door can function as a real door in terms of opening/closing, rather than a door that must be zipped open and closed. While there are Velcro closures around the D curve, we found that to keep insects from getting in we still had to zip it shut. However, we liked the easy entry! All in all, my family and I are very pleased with our new tent, and look forward to many years of use!

Awesome tent! Easy Set-up! Very roomy!
July 23, 2017
We purchased this product, specifically looking for a decent sized tent. We watched the 60 second set up video and were pretty ecstatic about the thought of setting up a tent quickly. When we finally received our product and it was time to use it, we were VERY pleased with the amount of time it took to set up. Our first time setting up, it took two of us about 2 minutes in total. We were flabbergasted! It seemed a little trickier to take down, but even with just reversing our steps... I think it was down and back in the bag (that grows so you don't have to cram it in there) in about 5 minutes... My sister and brother-in-law borrowed it and were very pleased as well. Another plus of this tent is it was big enough for our queen size air mattress and all of our gear with a ton of extra room. When my sister used the tent, she had the queen size bed with 2 pack-in-plays for her small children. She was beyond impressed being able to fit all that, in addition to her belongings. I highly recommend this product!
Great for all types of camping
February 18, 2017
Held up to scorching sun, moderate wind, and rain. The large mesh panels are great for hot weather and it didn't leak a drop even in a moderately heavy rain. Got the matching rainfly for it which had the added bonus of allowing me to leave the tops of the windows slightly open for airflow without rain getting in much like the panels in the porch area. As usualy its hard to get back in the bag after you open it the first time and apparently you can manage to rotate the poles inside one another (no idea how) if you let someone who thinks they know more about camping then they do help fold it up but its held up great nonetheless. Not too bad to set up alone and a breeze if you have 2 people, especially if they both know how to set up a tent, lol.
Finally - a waterproof tent that really IS waterproof!
December 16, 2016
I waited until we had a good rain to do my review of the Coleman instant 8 person tent. It sets up very easily - one athletic person could do it by themselves. My daughter and I had it up in under 2 minutes. The tie downs are fine - we used regular old tent stakes. We set it up in our back yard a day before rain was predicted because we wanted to test out how waterproof it is.Last evening and through the night we had a steady, soaking rain (about 14 hours total). Not a drop of rain made it into the tent. My daughter slept in it. She reported that she noticed a little condensation on the ceiling but that was from her breath. When she cracked open a window to vent it, the condensation stopped. No water on the floor, none came in the windows. We purchased the rain fly, but didn't need it.I don't know how it would hold up in winds. There were light breezes last night and it was fine. It's well made with attention to details like fabric folds to cover the zippers for waterproofing. It's HUGE. We could easily fit four full-size air mattresses in the two rooms, with room left for gear. Tall enough for us to stand upright. When we set it up, we also checked to see how easy it comes down. It's a snap, but it's a small challenge to get it back into the bag. What worked was one of us holding the bag while the other one set one end into the bag, then shimmying the bag up like a pillow case, while we pulled up the bag whenever it got stuck. For watertight shelter while camping this tent gets a solid five stars. If that changes in the future, I will update my review.
Coleman Instant Tents Mean Instant Outdoor Fun
November 24, 2015
Coleman Instant Tents Mean Instant Outdoor Funhttps://youtu.be/xlFEQg90GWgScouting has many joys and challenges particularly camping. For new scouts and their families attempting the great outdoors for the first time is daunting and find the right outdoor gear is critical. In particular, selecting and setting up a tent is a hurdle and if the parents buy the wrong tent it compounds the difficulties to where they might leave scouting. The leaders have the same need for quality camping equipment as they face many pressing needs which include helping new families unload and setup their tents to facilitate an easier and painless transition to scouting.Sure, I love Scouting and as a graying Boy Scout I am painfully aware that in Cub Scouts we don’t tackle Philmont or cool high adventure like white water rafting – we lack many of the sorts of exhilarating outdoor challenges my 14 year old Star Scout yearns for and experiences in Boy Scouts (Read: Envy). However, as I am the Cubmaster managing over 60 boys plus another 30 or so siblings ranging from ages 3 to 14, all of the parents and some grandparents during a campout for roughly 36 hours presents plenty of not so cool peril. Consider my camping history that includes a cub scout finding a coral snake, another time a copperhead and then yet again a water moccasin and then the grand prize: a scout suffering a second degree burn. These constant possibilities dictate an urgent need for constant supervision which forbids wasting precious minutes setting up a tent.Enter the Coleman Instant TentWhereas my first tent sans canvas as an adult was a four man dome tent that required at least thirty minutes for one adult and one squirrely Bear Cub (I don’t think I ever got the fly on correctly) - I was thrilled to discover I could set up my first Coleman 8-Person Instant Tent ALONE in under 10 minutes and my new Coleman Instant in 4 minutes!Pipe in the words to the song: FREEDOM!Not only can you set it up in mere minutes but then you actually enter the tent and find yourself awestruck by the seemingly palatial dimensions. My first memory of the Coleman 8-Person tent is still with me from Camp Everglades: I marveled at the size, trying to acclimate to the idea of two rooms, a 360 degree view and that stunning sensation of air moving in a tent. How can this be???Consider the irony that for the entire history of camping people would seek to travel to scenic places to spend at least half of their time in a tent with a fly covering every possible view. The Coleman Instant Tent pioneered an overdue revolution without my having to repeat the frequent risk of the no fly which periodically found me awake in a rainstorm. It took me a while to also ascertain that I could walk around without crouching! What a wonder! However, as we like to say in technology, the true test of quality comes on how a vendor responds to a problem. My first Coleman Instant Tent didn’t survive the harsh and constant winds we suffered on Camp Sawyer on Scout Key in the Florida Keys. Let me point out that there were easily another half dozen or so of the exact tents that had no issues and still have not to this day so my tent malfunction looks to have been an isolated experience. One of the tents corner legs became frozen and would not retract into the assembly. A single phone call to Coleman and then a minor process with an e-mail with some photographs and I had a new one inside of a week. Talk about making raving fans out of your customers – move over Rack Space – Coleman has it going on!Flash forward three years after buying my first Coleman Instant Tent I found myself with a Webelo Scout graduating to camping with his fellow Webelos (Coleman Dome Tents – future blog). Abandoned now for the second time I entered the lonely parental twilight existence of a camping empty nester and reluctantly accepting my fate I moved forward to downsize.I swear I tried, I did – I still have that claustrophobic one person coffin tent I am trying to give away. After two campouts I couldn’t do it anymore:• I missed the splendor of the vaulted ceilings• I missed the ability to stand up straight• I missed being able to have a cot• I couldn’t stand having my backpack in a foyer!• I got tired of banging my head against the hanging light from the ceilingThe Siren call of Coleman won out and I went back to the nearest retailer excitedly running my fingers over the many Instant Tents seeing that the selection had expanded and more choices presented themselves.A few minutes later I found myself the beaming owner of a significantly reduced, much smaller, humbler, empty nester, downgraded and Spartan Coleman Instant Dome 7.Hold it - I know what you are thinking but seven is much smaller than eight!! Plus my wife might come and what if my son was sick or my cousin came into town or my brother or sister or…I had to buy that tent! I mean…what if???Seriously, the Instant Tent is analogous to seat belts in cars – why on Earth didn’t we have them sooner and thank God and Coleman we finally do.Go buy one immediately here:Then: Dispose of your old tent through a donation to that family you don’t like or the leader you want to see less of. Ensure those ridiculous tents with the color coded poles are gotten rid of and just for fun get a sharpie and color over some of the poles to watch the hour long process take two to three times as long.Enjoy your camping time with your kids – it is truly a blessing. All for now - Yours in Scouting and Parenting,Cubmaster Augusttarbubbles.com
I LOVE THIS TENT!
September 22, 2014
Could not be more happy with this purchase! I had originally ordered the Coleman Montana 8 tent but it came "new" with a patch in the floor, and in the meantime I decided the extra $50 was worth the convenience of the instant tent.Setup was extremely simple as long as you follow directions and go in the correct order, everything seems very solidly built. Of course, it poured all night and into the morning with 15-20mph winds, and we awoke to being perfectly dry besides the typical "dew" feeling you can't avoid anyways. The seams look pre-sealed with like a clear plastic tape-like stuff, seems to have worked great! Did not have the rain-fly installed and I do not know why you would ever even need it with this tent.Taking the tent down was as simple as putting it up, and once you rip out the stitches on the bottom of the bag to extend it, it's no problem to get the tent to fit right back in there. Had to pack it up wet, but no sweat because it took 3 minutes to set back up the next morning to dry out and put away properly.***Update after close to two years- I have used this tent roughly 15 times, and after wiping down the outside with soap/water and sweeping out the interior, this thing is like brand new! I love to brag about this tent, people are always asking me about it and scoping it out, and it has performed flawlessly. The only issue I have right now is with the storage bag, one of the corners of it blew out. I'm either going to try stitching it or using fabric glue.
This tent was awesome
April 8, 2013
This tent really does setup quickly and tear down is as equally as fast. Watched the video a couple of times and it was as easy as it looks on the video. the space was great and seemed to have lots of room. Haven't used it yet for camping (bought it for camping trip in August 2013) but i think it will be great.Review Update (Tent Test)We did take it on a one day trial to The Valley of Fire in Moapa Nevada. OMG it was soooo windy when we got there we almost went back home. We decided though to stick it out. We put the tent up fairly easy even though it was super windy. Thank goodness we bought some new tent stakes that were way larger and much more sturdier. The ones that come with the tent just got pulled out by the wind. It was so windy that we had to put large rocks on the larger stakes to ensure they stayed in. Now I bought the tent used from amazon, and after we got it up and went to zip up for the night, I noticed that the zipper on the "D" door on the bottom was broke. Now to be fair I don't know if it came broken or if we broke it in the wind(I have since fix that with heavy duty Velcro on the bottom, which I actually think works better. But luckily it has two doors)Anyway it was hot and windy the whole night but the tent stayed up the whole time. It was so windy we left the windows down that way the wind would just go thorough the tent and not knock it over it was hot so all in all I think the tent did well in these extreme conditions. Oh and the windows did flap around in the wind as others has stated, but it didn't bother me as much as when the heavy winds gusted and made the tent shake like it was going to blow away :) thankfully it never did.Going to Pismo beach California at the end of this month (Aug 2013) and we will see how it does there.

I got replacement order.First time set up took more than 30 min and thought it takes more time than I thought. After set up, it seem built well.Inside is spacious with good height clearance.===Old review:The door pole should be two to make D shape. One is short and anther one is longer.I got 3 short one. The door cannot be the proper shape. So I've contacted customer service for the parts. No response for 2 days.I have to return.
Great tent if you're looking for added space
July 12, 2017
Great tent if you're looking for added space, says 8 person, pretty sure that should say 8 little people, but it's awesome for me, the wife, and our dog. We actually have the dog crate in the tent with us with room to spare for the cooler, kitchen stuffs, our bags, then we have a full size camp pad for bedding down as well. It traps heat pretty well when the sun's up but if you're in your tent for more than a minute on a sunny day you're camping wrong. I will say that if you think that overhang on the front is going to provide you safe haven from the sun or rain while you sit in your chair reading you're going to be mildly disappointed, it provides decent cover but not complete cover, your legs are gonna get wet for sure but it's handy in a pinch with something blows in unexpected. I especially love the head room in this tent though, I'm 6'3" and like to be able to stand when I change my undies, this thing has enough for me to do that comfortably, not all hunchback of noterdam style like my last tent. The door on the front is pretty neat, we broke the pole that made the D curve rigid but the hinge side is still intact and to be honest, it was an improvement. Happy camping!
Great tent, though coleman support is not so great.
June 13, 2016
I assembled this tent after receiving it so that I could inspect it and apply seam sealer. The tent itself is very good. It has almost everything I wanted in a tent: a tub floor to prevent ground level leaks, a "D" shaped door ("T" shaped doors have a gap where the zippers meet allowing water/critters to get in), a big screen roof for warm summer days. The only thing it was missing was a floor vent, which is available in the "elite" version, but I could not justify the extra expense for what amounts to a vent and a light. This tent does offer some nice extras that were not on my wish list. Those include good headroom almost anywhere in the tent (not just in the center), a slit for running an extension cord (which will be nice to charge phones/GPSs/2-way radios on long car-camping trips), a large awning over the door when the rain fly is on, and a rigid door with velcro. The rigid door will be very nice camping with kids who sometimes struggle with zippers and seem to always need to be reminded to zip the tent back up. My only gripe other than the lack of a floor vent is the fact that the rainfly is huge and difficult to put on unless you have a helper. The tub floor also causes a tripping hazard by the door but that is unavoidable if you want a tub floor so this is not a negative but something people may want to be aware of.I am quite happy with the tent itself and would have easily given it a 4 or 5 star rating. However, one of the poles arrived with some slight damage to the elastic band. Inside the box we had no fewer than 4 sheets of paper telling us not to return the tent if we had problems but instead to call the Coleman 800 number for a resolution. I followed their instructions since the damage was minor. Unfortunately, it was the weekend and the offices were closed. I called back on Monday and reported the information. I then had to wait a day for their warranty department to send me an email. The email requested photographs of my receipt and the damaged parts to verify I was telling the truth about the date of purchase and the problem I reported. I responded promptly and a few days later I received the new poles... however they were too long. The part number of the replacement poles matched the "replacement pole" kit number in the tents instructions so I contacted Coleman again only to learn that they do not stock specific poles and I would have to use the kit to construct my own replacement poles. Since my damage was minor, this was more of an annoyance than anything else. However, if you have a more serious issue like a cracked or missing pole or anything wrong with the tent itself, then I would recommend exchanging the entire tent rather than going through the Coleman warranty department.** UPDATE **I just added one star to the review. We took this tent on a two week camping trip. During the trip, we broke down the tent every 2-3 days to move to a new location. Temperatures ranged from the mid 30s in some locations to the mid 80s in others. Despite only being three of us in the tent, it held the heat pretty well in cold locations (seemed to be about 10 degrees warmer in the tent) but the ventilation was still good in warm locations and it did not turn into an oven. We saw strong winds one night and dizzel a few other nights, neither had any effect on the tent. One evening there was a very strong downpour as we were eating dinner. We were in bear country and did not want to take the food in the tent so we ran to the car to finish eating and then wait out the storm. About 45 minutes later, the rains subsided enough for us to return the the tent. I checked the floors and could not find a single drop of water! The pole help up well and we got pretty good at assembling the tent. One evening we pulled into the campsite with a storm bearing down on us (though it ended up just missing us). Two of us got the tent assembled with the rain fly on "good enough" (ie attached to the tent but not tied down) in under 10 minutes. Other nights we took our time and it probably took closer to 20 minutes. The tent itself goes up quick, just stake it down at 8 points, and insert 4 poles. The poles go in pretty easily do no not snag much on the fabric. The rainfly is the putsy part. It is difficult to determine what is the front and the tent is so high that it almost needs two people to put it on. Once on, there 8 bungied clips that are attached to 4 of the tents stake points (2 clips at each point) and a bajillion velcro tabs that attach to the poles. Once all the velcro points are attached then you need to add another pole and then stake down the flaps near the entry. Needless to say, if you know the weather will be nice, skip the rain fly. We ended up missing one of the velcro points one night and as the wind blew the felcro rubbed against the screened roof and frayed it a little.Overall, though I am very pleased with this tent. It was bone dry after a heavy rain, was easy to put up and take down, was comfortable, and has tons of room. It also packs up to a relatively small area despite being such a large tent.
Roomy, dry, but lacks ventilation - destroyed by severe thunderstorm. AMAZING customer service!
July 23, 2015
We only had it out for two times - once as a dry run in the back yard and the second time out it got wiped out by severe winds, but I think three things lead to its demise. 1) It is a rectangle with a 16 foot side. Unfortunately, this side was facing the wind and acted as a big sail. 2) It was a warm night and we had the rain-fly off the two ends, but still attached in the middle. When we heard thunder approaching, I went out in the dark and pulled the fly back into place attaching all the guidelines. I did it in the dark and I'll never know how good a job I did. 3) Cheap tent stakes - I was able to watch the tent fail from my shelter position. The single line holding the back middle of the fly must have failed since I saw the fly on the back lift up and then the next lightning flash the tent was gone. In the morning we found it wrapped around a fire grate - 3 broken poles and a torn off middle grommet. Here is the amazing thing though - all our items inside were dry!Why the 4 then? The tent is very dry - it rained very hard before the big storm came (separate storms - love the midwest in June) and not a drop inside. Also love the vestibule - shoes were dry when I put them on for my dash to the shelter. Also, my family of 5 was very comfortable in the tent. It is just long enough for a sleeping bag, but wide enough for 5 maybe 6 good size bags. What I didn't like was the lack of air flow. It gets very hot with the rainfly on and during the yard test it was 120F with an outside temp of 90. At night (with fly on) the tent remained 5 to 10 degrees above the outside temperature. I would guess this would lead to condensation on the inside (which some have called leaking) during cold nights and a wet sleeping bag is a cold sleeping bag.The customer service at Coleman has been AMAZING - replaced the tent with just a few pictures. Never felt I had to argue my case, they just wanted to know what failed and need a picture of it. I would buy another coleman product because of their customer service.
A great family car camping tent, and the door is awesome.
September 13, 2014
The thing about tents....when they say they sleep a certain number of people, them mean that if you sleep in sleeping bags crammed together like sardines, that many people could physically sleep in the tent. For comfortable camping with a little personal space and room for gear and air mattresses, half the number the tent says it will sleep. We bought this large tent for our family of three, plus a dog. It worked quite well for that. We are coming from a Big Agnes tent that was just too cramped with the dog, so that is the tent quality that we are used to. This tent took us about 30 min to set up, it was not confusing or difficult, but there were a lot of steps/ instructions to follow. We bought a tarp to use as a ground cloth and we bought sturdier tent stakes to go with. The door is my favorite thing about this tent; being able to swing the door open and shut easily like a "real" door is awesome, especially when you have a small child who wants to go in and out of the tent every five seconds. I also liked the roominess, the height, and it seems very well constructed. We took this tent on a 3-night camping trip. We had one day on our trip where it rained solidly all day; the tent stayed dry inside. We did keep gear away from the walls so that water would not "wick" into the tent. There was a bit of pooling of water on the white parts of the rainfly; from the inside of the tent I would hit those areas so the water could drain off. The rainfly sat enough off of the roof of the tent that despite this pooling, the tent did not get wet. One thing I wish this tent had was more pockets and loops inside to put items in/hang things from. the only loop is in the very center of the ceiling, and there are only two very small gear pockets. I would like more pockets on the walls to put small items like your cell phone and wallet and headlamp as you sleep. We found the ventilation in this tent to be adequate; the rainfly does not fit tight over the mesh top of the tent, so there is always some ventilation, even if you close the windows. The door has a mesh panel on the top half, like a screen door, which helps with ventilation. We put a queen mattress on one end of the tent for my husband and I, had a inflatable sleeping pad with a sleeping bag on the other end for our child, and had a dog bed and all of our gear in the middle. There was plenty of room to move around, dress, and play family board games in the tent (while it rained outside). For the deeply discounted price, this is a great choice for a family car camping tent. Also, it didn't take up as much space in the car as you would think; in fact, this tent in it's bag is about the same size as our 4-person Big Agnes tent. huh. For storage of the tent I did buy a canvas laundry bag with a top drawstring, a carry strap and an outside pocket from the college "back to school" section at a local discount store; I was able to fit the tent in it's bag, the tent poles and stakes outside of the tent bag, and the tent's ground cloth (a tarp) in that larger bag. The tent was a big of a project to get back into it's original storage bag, but we were able to do so.
Ah the Montana 8...after reading many reviews about it, here is mine
July 28, 2013
So..I am an avid camper. Been camping many times since I was a kid. I have owned 3 tents in 25 years of on my own camping, the Coleman Montana 8 is the 3rd. When I was looking for a tent, I did a lot of research, and read many reviews. I would say for the Montana 8, the reviews have been pretty accurate. It is very roomy, yet a bit narrow and although on our trip the weather was sort of ok...I can see ventilation being a problem on hotter, more humid days and nights. But overall it is a solid tent.First off, you have to know in shopping for a tent that a 4 person tent is good for two people and gear and 6 person is good for 3-4 people and 6-8 person tents are good for 4-5 adults and children if you want to be comfortable and not on top of each other. With that said, me, my son (5) and my friend and his son (4) had just about the perfect amount of room (maybe a tad more than we needed). Each little family had one side of the tent with a good amount of room in the middle for moving around and bags and such.Honestly, if there was anyone else in there it would have been a little crowded. So think about it, 2 adults and 2 kids and it was just about perfect. My son and I had the Coleman 4 in 1 bed with the mattress' side by side...which they say is a about a king size mattress...it fit fine. My friend had a queen size sleeping mat on his side and it fit fine.So while it was roomy for us, I wouldn't try to fit more than 5 people in there comfortably. If you are a family or set of friends of 3-4, this is a great size for you.The set up - my son and I got to the site first and started with the tent. We had never taken the tent out of the box it was delivered in, so we went at it blind. If you have never set up a tent before I can see it being a bit overwhelming at first, but with more than one person, you should be able to get it. If you have set up a tent before, you will be fine with one person. I did it with my 5 year old and while he wasn't much help, I did need him to hold up the sides when it came time to make them tight. If he wasn't there I would have just stood them up and staked them to hold them up, so it really won't be a problem to do it by yourself...if you have done it before. I'd say 30-45 mins set up for one experienced person to complete. As I said, we took it out of the box at the site, so I added no extra rain seal or anything and sure enough it rained on us the two mornings we woke up there. Not a drop got in that I could see and the rain was substantial at times...the kids just played in the tent, plenty of room to pass a nerf football, and we waited out the rain in there....not a problem at all. Except, ventilation, we did have damp clothes and bedding, but it was not the rain, it was the lack of ventilation.Which brings me to the only two down sides, there are two small windows on either end and the screen door, so there is no real cross breeze. I even had the tent turned so the windows were in the direction of the wind, the windows are too small. Bottom line, better ventilation is needed, maybe just a venting window on the back wall facing the door. I had a tent fan to sleep with (got that because of the reviews I had read)....I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THAT if you need air to sleep such as I :) In a little colder environment, this would be a very warm tent. The only other negative is the awning or the "porch" this is not a porch...I was up one night while everyone was asleep and it started to rain. I put my chair under the "porch" to watch the fire and the rain and there is hardly any protection at all to sit under there. The door is awesome. With kids running in and out it's great...but you still have to zipper it each time and both kids handled the zipper door very well and the zipper handled them well.I would say overall I am very happy with this tent, just needs better ventilation. It's tall so you can stand up in it and that is important if you are getting older like me :) I am 6ft tall and fit fine in there. There may be better tents out there....but not many at this price. Happy Camping!

Great spacious family tent
August 19, 2016
I like how spacious this tent is and my husbands favorite part is that he can walk around inside without ducking around the whole time. I love that you can open all the windows and get a great airflow going. However that is not the case if it's raining. We have recently used this tent while camping on the beach. It was great until it started raining at 4 am and rain started coming in the windows. I had to quickly zip up all the windows and it got warm inside. I wish it came with the rainfly but I will be ordering one for the next time we go camping. We did not have any issues with leaking. We did have light-moderate winds and had no issues with the tent caving. The setup and break down took a couple times to get used to but now I can do it by myself fast. It is a bit of a "Glamping" tent but it's great for families and people who over pack and love having more space like me. I was able to set up two queen beds side by side in one half and had the other half to set up another seating area and put all of our stuff.
Performs Well, Solid Purchase
June 23, 2015
This fly is good, and fits the 14x10 ft tent. Be careful, there is also one for the 14x8 ft tent, and other reviewers have experienced confusion. This Coleman® tent is of good quality, feels substantial and not paper-thin like many of the cheaper tents (and their flies) do. Yet Coleman seems to pull this off without charging very much more than many of those cheaper tents. Seams and zippers are nice, and the zippers fit well. Most operate without getting stuck in the tent's own adjacent fabric, but the door on the side with the bigger screens is an exception. Care must be taken there for the adjacent fabric not to foul the zipper, but if using care, it can be operated without too much trouble. Fit is excellent, and the integrated pole design is about the best thing since sliced bread. This is the first "8-man" tent I have ever put up by myself, with ease, and almost as fast as advertised. (To be fair, the "one minute" erection claim did show 2 people setting it up.) Upon takedown, the tent fit back into its carrier bag without having to burst out the "expansion seam" provided. My only dislike is that it is rather heavy and bulky, which is to be expected for such a large tent--and that is not the dislike. The dislike is that it would be difficult to pack in and out of somewhere because of its bag's "gym bag" strap design. I would much prefer an adjustable shoulder strap design that could be worn like a backpack.Once up, the design of the tent is quite good. An internal divider provides for 2-room privacy, and both chambers have their own door, so no one has to go out through someone else's bedroom. Once divided, one room has smaller screened windows for more privacy, while the other one has much wider screens--nearly ceiling-to-floor--for excellent ventilation. With everything opened up, the tent has excellent cross ventilation no matter from which direction the wind comes.Coleman's integrated ropes for tie-downs each include a small plastic tension adjuster making tightening the rope a SNAP, and for novices it would be easy to figure out which loop to pull to get it to stay. The included stakes seem flimsy (part of the reason for no 5th star) and if not carefully inserted into the ground will be easily bent. However, they ARE very easy to slip into all but the hardest of soils without any tools, and if inserted at the proper angle, they hold the lines well, even in decent wind. (Fortunately I have yet to have it up during HIGH wind or storms.)The optional fly, if purchased, provides shade and a level of cooling, by leaving a nice space between the shade of the fly and the tent's roof. However, this tent's roof is complete as-is, and the fly designed for the tent is _purely_ optional. It will perform fine without a fly. However, I did purchase its fly, expecting that it will protect the tent's roof from the UV degradation that it would naturally otherwise experience from being exposed to the sun without it. I haven't had it out in the rain yet, but as soon as I do I will let you know how it turned out. (If I get busy and don't get back for a while, assume that "no news is good news.") I will SURELY be on here griping if it doesn't perform well! ;)Bottom line: I would buy this tent again, and in fact I like it enough so far that I will shop Coleman first, if I am in the market again any time soon.
First Use In Moderate Oregon Rain, no Rainfly
July 24, 2014
This tent was purchased to replace an older dome tent. We are a family of four with a dog. We like the separate room idea for a little more privacy when changing clothes with growing kids, and a great spot to keep dog crate and gear separate from beds.I (5'8" woman with no upper body strength) just got back from spending a few nights in an Oregon state park using our new tent with my kids for the first time. A friend helped set up, and it went up quick. Even so, I was able to do it myself in the back yard for a test run before we left. It just took longer :) The tent is h-e-a-v-y, and definitely recommended for a short walk from vehicle to tent spot.It rained for two days during our trip. The inside stayed dry with no rainfly. Though the tent didn't leak, I noticed items against the sides of the tent, above the height of the waterproof flooring (which comes up several inches), absorbed moisture through the tent walls. I pulled everything away from the walls and had no more issues. We had a queen air mattress and single camp pad at the foot of the bed in the "back", and our gear in the "front porch". There are two small gear pockets in the "back" of the tent. I think some of the reviewer pictures must be from the instant cabins - or maybe a newer/different model of the tent - the interior looks different, and we don't have a place to hang a lantern. The room divider hangs from the ceiling and attaches in three spots on each side of the interior, zipping up the middle to split the tent in half. When fully zipped, the divider gaped at the sides. It does not provide a full barrier, but enough for the added privacy I wanted. It does take time to roll back up (at least that was my experience). In a hurry to get out of the downpour, instead of zipping, I just clipped the straps around the bulging tent that was only part way in the bag. After unpacking the car at home I saw the label indicating the carrying bag could be expanded by cutting a seam on the side. Haha! That will help next time!Cons so far:1. The zipper on the "front porch" of the tent stuck in the same spot consistently, about 8 inches from the ground. Otherwise smooth.2. Where the zippers meet at the bottom of both doors there is a gap almost big enough for me to stick a thumb though - plenty big enough for bugs. For a first run I'm generally impressed. Our next trip is to a drier, more remote area. Should be a totally different experience, and I'm excited to try it out and take advantage of the 360-degree views!
Was great, but broke within 2 years
May 12, 2014
I have timed myself setting this up by myself in 30 seconds, legit. Fully set-up one person 30 seconds. Once set-up this tent is MASSIVELY HUGE, and AWESOME. The two rooms are plenty spacious, I usually set up a queen sized air mattress in each area and still have plenty of space for all of the other gear including chairs etc. It's true luxury camping and you'll be the envy of those you're with. Set up a pop-up pavilian in front, with a table under it, and some tiki torches and all set.Downside, this thing is HEAVY, we're talking you're not going far from the car with it over your shoulder in the duffle bag heavy. While this doesn't pose an issue initially, by the 10th time or so that you take this thing out of thebasement lug it to your car and bring it camping you'll start to envy your buddies who have a light weight small tent.Other downside THE TENT BROKE within 2 years :*( I was devastatingly disappointing as I did not do anything unusual to the tent, had simply been taking it down as normal and folding the legs in without any extra pressure when SNAP a pole cracked apart that was connected to the center, I did not put torq on it. Initially had hopes it could either be repaired or maybe had a warranty... no such luck, had to toss it at $200 was expecting this tank hotel of a tent to last me easily through a good half dozen seasons at-least.This tent otherwise would have 5+ stars as I loved it, but durability is a major factor, and at $200 I'm really dissapointed and sad. Looking around at the options, I have a $30 walmart tent which has lasted 4 years and is still in perfect shape might stick with that for a while I guess... kind of liked the tremendous space that this Coleman tent provided for longer trips (5 days/nights in a row camping)
Great Tent
April 27, 2014
I bought this because I was looking for something I could put up myself. It's as easy to put up as the youtube videos indicate. I didn't give it 5 stars because there are no roof vents like the ones offered on the 14' x 8' tent. I also dinged the tent because it doesn't come with a rain-fly. So, when its raining, I'd have to keep the screen covers zipped up and there would be no ventilation. Fortunately, I bought the rain-fly separately. According to Coleman the fly does come over tent enough that some of the screens can be exposed a bit to let air in, but not rain. I think Coleman should have anticipated the needs of the camper when it rained...they've only been making tents for decades. Now, the above paragraph was not enough to warrant dinging the tent beyond one star. It has advantages that outweigh those issues:1) Easy to put up. I put it up in about 3 minutes the first time. I did not stake it into the ground or tie off the strings but I imagine you're looking at another 10 minutes or so.2) It has lots of screens that when not raining, will provide maximum ventilation.3) It's spacious4) the floor material comes up around the perimeter of the tent to ensure water doesn't come in.5) There is a zippered divider that separates the screened in part of the tent from the back.6) You can stand up in this tent. It has a center height of 6'5.7) I was able to get the whole tent put back in the bag without utilizing the expandable feature of the bag (there's a strip on the underside of the bag and if you cut it, there's additional fabric that will expand so as to make the bag bigger and thus easier to stuff the tent back. Note, the bag is big as it is. Once you cut that piece of fabric that holds the additional fabric from expanding, you can't undo it. The bag will be even bigger.)
How lovely are your tents...
September 7, 2013
We bought this tent in July in anticipation of our first camping trip in 5 years. To say my spouse is a reluctant camper is an understatement, so I did whatever I could think of (short of renting a furnished cottage) to make our week on the coast of Maine comfortable. I had been reading the comments about this tent for about a year before we decided for sure that we'd be camping this summer. Wish I'd gone for it in early summer, when Coleman was running a $20 rebate program! Oh, well.We practiced raising the tent one time before leaving home. In the hot sun, it took us a few minutes of frustration to figure out how to get all the arms extended, but really it wasn't too bad. Knocking it down wasn't bad either -- we managed to get it back into the case without opening up the gusset for extra space. Fast forward a week -- we sure were glad we had done a dry run as we raced the sunset to arrive at the campground. Setup went very fast. We used a tarp underneath (smaller than the footprint of the tent, as recommended by some of the commenters here), but that was it -- no seam-sealing or other prep.Someone else posted this week about using the tent for 2 people -- honestly, we were happy to have all that space for just the two of us, and couldn't imagine sharing it! It's spacious, but we liked the elbow room. To give an idea of how much room there was, we used a double-high, queen-size air mattress, and had plenty of room to walk on either side. I had little nightstands on either side of the bed as well. I also had a 4'x6' rug (from Ikea, in case you're interested) in the front area of the tent. I'll see if I can post a photo. We had only one day of rain that week, but it was torrential. Storms kept blowing through the area, so it rained hard, on and off, for hours. We had been out all day -- when we got back, we noticed that there had been a small leak. The vulnerable spot seemed to be where the curtain/room divider was sewn into the roof of the tent. We didn't have a fly, but we had staked the tent out as taut as we could, and that was the only moisture issue we experienced. Never noticed condensation inside the tent, even though we were by the coast and mornings could be damp. We were among pine trees, so it was easy to put the stakes in, but I was glad that we at least had a few longer spikes for the four corners of the tent, and a mallet. That kit that Coleman sells is actually kind of nice -- we asked for it in our wedding registry. It comes with four of the sturdier stakes, the mallet and a stake puller, plus a cute broom and dustpan. It all came in handy. Coleman Tent KitOne result of all that rain -- even though the tarp was much smaller than the footprint of the tent, a lot of water got trapped between the tarp that the underside of the tent. We discovered it at the end of the week, when we were dismantling the tent. But we never had any moisture underfoot, inside the tent. The bottom material must have been very well coated. The person who commented about needing both hands free to get in and out of the tent -- we experienced that as one of the major annoyances of the tent. It's the reason I gave it 4 stars and not 5. We wanted to keep it zipped, to keep out the mosquitoes, but every time we wanted to bring something into or out of the tent, it was hard to juggle it while holding onto the bottom of the zipper with one hand and raising the zipper tab with the other. Quite a pain, as our daily routine required many entrances and exits. Maybe next time we'll be a little less obsessive about keeping it sealed, since the zipper is protected by a nice, heavy flap with a few sturdy patches of Velcro along its length.Putting the tent back into the bag, with the bottom all wet and muddy, was a lot harder than when we did it the first time, when all was clean and dry. We didn't want to touch it and get our clothes all dirty, but you do have to kind of get down to roll it, and show it who's boss. It's a lot of work, IMO. That was where my "glamping" concept got a reality check!Looking forward to using it again, and I hope I won't have to wait 5 years! Also hope we don't experience the parts failures that others have described, or at least that Coleman will have come up with a suitable fix by then. It's worrisome to hear that these things can break, apparently for no good reason.

Three Star Reviews:

7%
) I like the higher end windows
August 14, 2017
Setting up the tent was not hard at all, but did take a bit longer and had more poles, velcro tabs, hooks, stakes, and guy wires then my previous tent. Definitely takes two people. I don't see how this tent will leak with the rain fly properly attached. I've read other comments where they had leaks and even saying everything was drenched. The only way that happened is if it wasn't on correctly. I guess I'll wait and see when I go through my first rain storm. Has plenty of room for my large Cabela's cot, space for my golden retriever to sprawl, and room for at least 2 more people with cots or sleeping bags. Lots of head room, but I'm short. :) I like the higher end windows, too.Why only 3 stars - the hinged door isn't all that great. Maybe I need to tweak the tension the next time I set it up, but it was clunky and didn't latch to the velcro properly. The zipper closure is very sturdy and will probably just use that to make sure the bugs stay out. The other issue is it's a big step through the door and most likely, I will be tripping...a lot. It's at least 4 - 5 inches high to step over while going through the door. Even my dog "leaps" through the doorway. Will need to put a rug down inside the door so she doesn't put holes in the floor while landing. Not sure I'm going to like the high step every time.Probably the biggest "con" (literally) out of this whole tent is that I thought it came with lights. I assumed because it had the LED light symbol on the rain fly that it came with a light inside. It did not! Very disappointed and feel like it's a hug misrepresentation. I did go back and see that you have to purchase the Montana ELITE tent in order for those to be included. Why they have the lantern symbol on this tent is beyond me. There is a place to hang my lantern, but that is it. I will live, but feel a bit cheated.
Leaking Seams
January 27, 2017
It would easily get a 5 star review if it wasn't for the rainy night we had on night 2 of our camping trip. Set up was super easy, tent is huge especially with just 2 people using it. The hinged door is a great idea in theory but it does warp & it doesn't stick to the Velcro patches. It was handy when setting up & taking things in & out of the tent, otherwise it was zipped shut. On night 2 it started raining. We had the rain fly secured & ready to ride out the storm. Within 10 minutes of the rain starting I noticed one corner of the tent leaking from the seams. I threw a towel down & hoped that's all the water we'd see. Needless to say, all 4 corners leaked in the same spots throughout the night. We ended up with 2 friends who were rained out in our tent so I slept near one of the sides & I had water dripping on my face from the angled side of the tent. We woke up the next morning & everything we had near the corners were drenched. It took 2 days to dry out our tent. When I contacted Coleman about the obvious defects in their products they said it was condensation. I don't think so, the tent leaked in the same 4 seams in the 4 corners. Next time we camp we're bringing a can of rain guard, seam sealer, and a tarp. Great tent if you live in an area that never rains!
Should've gotten a smaller tent
October 13, 2016
Wow, this thing is so much bigger than I originally thought it might be. It will fit my whole family and all our gear.***Update*** We've used this 4 times total and have developed a hole just under the door and now I have to find a way to patch it before we go camping next time. I attached a picture for reference. If you only have 1 or 2 people camping, this is not the tent for you, you will stay cold all night... this would be a good tent for 4 or more people.
Not Very Good Ventilation, But Overall A Good Tent
July 18, 2016
The tent is a good size and I got mine for a great deal ($99 + free Prime 2 Day Shipping). I did read the reviews first, but purchased anyways. I live in Florida and if you're in the south, this is not really a tent you want to use in the summer months. We went Memorial Day weekend and there's not very good ventilation/circulation in this tent with the way it's designed. I used to have the 3 room version of this tent that is slightly deeper and a little higher with an extra window at the back + a dogie door. It's just two of us and there was PLENTY of space for our queen air mattress - we probably could have had of of them in there. Overall it kept the rain out, it was just hot and stuffy. There aren't any dividers for "rooms" in this tent. It has lots of room though and it was pretty simple for use to set up - took us about 20 minutes because we had a VERY similar model before. It's NOT an instant set up tent, so if you're not experienced with setting up a tent with multiple poles, this one might take you a while and it's definitely one you'll want someone's help with in getting pitched.
... owned probably 10 tents and this one is the best..
August 20, 2015
I've owned probably 10 tents and this one is the best... BUT only 3 stars because it gets HOT. This would be a perfect tent if there were a window on the back wall, opposite the door. The windows are all up high which makes your sleeping area stuffy and hot until the temp dips below 65 at night. I'm disappointed because everything else about it is great. You can stand up anywhere in the tent. The rain fly is huge and you can leave the side windows open and not get wet. It's easy to set up after the first try, like most tents should be. Instructions are sewn into the bag. Poles are color coded. I looked at the Montana Elite and almost went for it because of the small opening in the back. Now I wish I had! But I didn't need lights so couldn't justify the extra $50. The hinged door is nice but make sure you stake it out as far as possible on both sides of the door to lower the lip you have to step over. The velcro on the doors is tricky to line up but not enough to complain about. My two small dogs loved it.. they could get in and out of the tent during the day with the door "closed." You can sit outside in the entryway during a light rain and not get wet. We didn't have much rain so I can't testify to a downpour but we never had water or condensation inside. We had two queen airbeds with plenty of room in the center for our gear. Bottom line: if it's warm at night where you camp, bring a couple fans. On the other hand, it would be great for chilly nights!UPDATE 7/1/2016: One of the tent poles split after second use. Contacting Coleman as tent is still under warranty. Disappointed.
Pretty good tent, except....
October 28, 2014
I really wanted to love this tent based on the reviews, and for the most part, it's a great tent for the money. Two big issues that prevented us from totally loving it:1. There was about a 4 inch opening in one of the main seams in the back of the tent when we pulled it out of the box. Wasn't ripped, you could just tell when it was being sewed together the fabric was missed in this spot. Of course we had already tossed the box it came in, and was leaving for our camping trip in a few days, so we had to repair it and then try to heavily seal it. Not too happy about that.2. The swing out door is a brilliant concept and would make for real ease to get in and out of....as long as there are absolutely zero bugs in the area. When the tent is fully set up, the fabric is stretched so taut the door does not fasten with the velcro well, and therefore has big gaps. So, we ended up zipping it open and shut every time we went in and out, which, overall, is what we have to do with other tents, but was looking forward to this feature and it doesn't work at we anticipated. It is super roomy inside and awesome to be able to stand up and walk around in it, and the windows on each end provide great cross-ventilation and helps keeps the heat out when the sun is beating down on it. It wasn't difficult at all to set up with just the two of us, although I recommend going ahead and putting down a tarp under the tent to help protect the floor. We haven't had any issues with rain yet, so can't testify to that, but so far has worked out really well, just wish it didn't have these two issues.

Nice Tent - Needs Quality Control on Manufacturing
August 10, 2017
I haven't used the tent outdoors yet. However, I always do a dry run before I actually need to set it up in less comfortable conditions. My main complaint is that 2 of 4 top bars were installed upside down. The bars are rounded on top and flat on the bottom. Due to being installed upside down, the poles would not extend. I had to unscrew the bars from the corner knuckle and from the point the bar telescopes. Then I had to man handle the coupler to flip it.I've seen other people post the same issue. For Coleman: It's not that much more expensive to add a QC person in Bangladesh. Just think how much this post, and other posts, are costing if it steers away a small percentage of possible customers?
It's a collapsible cabin, not a tent
June 28, 2017
This is huge, it's a two person setup if there is any wind over 5mph. The plain tent pegs tend to move and rotate in windy conditions with the tent poles becoming free unless your gear/people are anchoring it down. The locks on the extended pole feel cheap, I bet it will not last more than 3 to 5 outings. If I thought Amazon would accept it as a return I will return it (clean but used).
the tent is nice and roomy
April 21, 2017
My first attempt to set it up took about an hour, and I finally had to ask for an extra hand, because it's really a 2 person job. Once up, the tent is nice and roomy, and has adequate features. I noticed that the two side poles didn't touch the ground, but I put it up in my driveway, and staking the tent would have probably solved that issue. My second attempt took only 20 minutes, and I did it single-handed. Once again in my driveway. While the tent seems heavy when it is down, it is light as a feather when it is up. It also functions as a sail, as a minor gust of wind picked it up, flipped it over, and sailed it across the driveway. I have my first hole in my tent already. It appears that I can get the setup time down toward the 10 minute range, or maybe faster if there are two of us. I sprayed the locks on the sliding poles with silicone spray, and that made them easier to lock in position. I'm looking forward to taking it camping (and staking it down), and it will be interesting to see if it survives in the rain with no fly. I'll report back when I have some camping under my belt.
Poorly made in Bangladesh
September 4, 2016
I just put it together today and was pretty disappointed in it.Turns out that it was not made in the USA as advertised. It was made in Bangladesh. But that wouldn't be that big of a deal if it was put together correctly. Two of the four extending poles were installed backwards and made extending the top very difficult. This is easily remedied by unscrewing the joint poles and spinning around and putting them in the correct direction. But, the screws were stripped and bent from the incorrect factory installation. The poles also had minor scratches on them from being forced in backwards.I plan to return.Edit: I contacted Colman and they resolved my Issue to my satisfaction. My review has been increased because of their good customer service.
Rain fly is a must!!!
August 13, 2016
It's a great tent but wish a rain fly automatically came with it!!! To me it's coleman's way to nickel and dime you. It's a necessary thing so include it!Weather is unpredictable as we just found out. We went camping and saw it was 80% chance of rain, couldn't get rain fly delivered in time so got a hotel for night 1. Night 1 ended up with no rain and night 2 that was supposed to be great was raining from 5pm till 7am. We had to leave at 9pm since in less than 2 hours you could see the rain drops coming in (like having a slow drip to torment you all night hitting your face- it was sporadically all over). Then by 7pm we had pools of water at entrances and sides. Hubby thought he'd go towel it up but was way too much for even 4 towels to handle. I'm really hoping the rain fly will take care of future issues!
Fairly nice product, but....

This tent seems pretty well made and is easy to set up and take down. Has plenty of headroom and is very well ventilated. Just a couple of caveats: (1) The vertical zipper leaves a "flap" at the bottom rather than intersecting at the two horizontal zippers, so there's really no seal. The rainfly, sold separately, does not stick out far enough to permit the rain to run off past the bottom of the tent. so the rain drips onto the lower part of the tent, and if the little zipper flap is left to the inside of the horizontal lower zippers, rain runs right into the tent. Even if the flap is left on the outside of the other zippers, there is no reliable impediment for the entry of insects. (2) This is the worst part of the tent, and it might seem minor to some people but it's a huge issue for me, which is that the bag is too small to get the tent back into. I could tell when I first took the tent out that there seemed to not be one square millimeter of vacant space in the bag, and you can tell it when you try to get it back in. As far as I'm concerned, the aggravation factor alone is reason enough not to buy this tent if there were no alternatives, but thankfully my local sporting goods store had a big canvas duffel that the tent could be stored in, so that's my solution. Hey Coleman: add about .25 worth of extra fabric to your tent bags and make your customers' lives a lot less frustrating.

Poor quality and design
August 14, 2017
For the price I paid (about $100 as a daily deal), it's serviceable, but the tent is poorly made and poorly designed. The seam between the bottom of the tent and the upper nylon ripped at one corner after putting it up only 4-5 times. It also leaks on one side and through the rain fly. I would not buy this tent again.I also dislike that it uses pole sleeves instead of hooks like many other tents on the market. Sleeves are annoying because the joints on the poles catch and get stuck.Next time I buy a tent -- which will probably be soon given this tent's issues -- I'll spend more to get better quality. On the plus side, this tent does offer a lot of space inside. It's large enough for us to fit two air mattresses and a pack-n-play for our toddler.
The poles are way too flimsy... not worth it
January 24, 2017
I wanted to love this tent. The quality of the actual tent was great! It kept us dry and held up in the wind. However, after (a great) night sleep we went to pack it up and although we were taking much care in the "tear down" one of our poles sections shattered and gave my husband an awful sliver... we haven't used it since because we are too worried about something similar happening
Don't buy this tent if you've had the Red Canyon Coleman Tent before!
July 4, 2016
We normally buy the Red Canyon version of this Coleman tent but decided to try this one. We got it as a gift this past year but didn't open it until last weekend on our annual camping trip. It was not as good as the Red Canyon!! It was harder to put up, the tips of the poles came off and the leader fabric that goes across the top ripped. All in the first time using it!I see that the time has passed for when we can return this tent but there was no need to put it together until we used it last weekend for the first time. We would like to find out if we can exchange this tent for the Red Canyon.
The first year was great!
July 2, 2016
Purchased this tent in June 2014 and was very happy with it the first year. In 2015, I noticed the area on either side of the rain fly (the white area in the picture) would sag and collect water when it rained. So, as long as it was raining, I had to continually raise that area with my hand from the inside to drain the water off the tent. Otherwise, it would wick and continually drip inside the tent. Luckily, I had a bucket and a large pot to collect the water while we slept. When I returned from camping, I set the tent up in the yard to see if I did something wrong or different that made it collect water. I propped up a hose to simulate rain and sure enough it sagged and collected water on both ends. I adjusted the guy wires and nothing I could do would tighten it up. All I could determine is the rain fly fabric just gave out and lost its strength. Used it two more times that year and bought another brand and different style tent for 2016. It was a nice tent, pleasant color scheme, the hinged door was great, and it was easy for one person to set up. No other problems with leaking other than noted.
True Coleman Quality (i.e. cheap)
July 12, 2015
Well, first off it's a Coleman so how good could it really be? The black Friday sale at $130 enticed me though. I've used it once and one of the pole strings already broke. I'm working with their warranty people but we'll see how that goes. If price is your biggest concern than a Coleman could be an option. If you value quality at all I'd recommend other brands because the hassle of getting super cheap parts replaced is a real pain. The tent is large and held up (kept rain out) over a 4 day camping trip to Yellowstone. We got rained on probably 6 times for quite a while but it wasn't a downpour or very windy. We never had any moisture issues inside the tent. It is fairly easy to setup. I can't speak to the tent's longevity but given the lack of quality in most Coleman products these days I doubt I'll be using this tent for many years (unlike my parents Camel tent that we used starting in the early 1980's and still works great).
Very disappointed!
May 10, 2015
We put this tent up for a trial run before the camping trip - several quality issues. More than one place the stitching was bad, the threads were coming undone and we had to re-sew them. Where the tie downs attach to the tent they use a plastic ring, several of them broke on the first usage. Really disappointed in this Coleman tent.

Poor construction quality, leaks in the rain and unusable after six camping trips
September 25, 2017
I bought this tent in September 2012. I was able to use it a sum total of 6 times before it became unusable. The first time we went camping one of the corner straps tore off, so it was difficult to secure that corner. It also rained quite a bit that weekend. While the water fly covers the tent well, we had water leakage coming in from the bottom of the doors from both the front and back. The third time I used the tent one of the center retracting poles broke at the joint on the edge of the roofline - the L-shaped plastic on the corner with a pin holding it to the pole. The metal pin that held the pole on worked its way out. I was able to get the pin back in and tie some paracord around the corner to secure that pole, which of course I had to do again the remaining times I used the tent. The last time I used the tent two more of the retracting poles broke in the same manner rending the tent useless. While the tent itself was pretty easy to set up, I was extremely disappointed in the quality of construction. The poles should not have broken in that manner after so few uses. I'm much happier with the NTK tent I bought for 1/2 the price.
They don't make them like they used to
September 7, 2017
This tent fell short of my high expectations. I previously owned a Coleman Instant Tent and it was the best tent I have ever owned, it was so easy and quick to set up, the fabric was durable, and it was easy to get back into the bag. When I finally gave in and replaced it (after so many years it did start to leak) I bought this Coleman Instant 8 Person Tent in blue and I knew instantly upon removing it from the bag the quality had changed for the worse. The fabric and screening is much thinner and I do not believe it will hold up for years like my other tent. It has room divider than cannot be removed and when rolled up it;s still in the way. I like the fact you can exit from either end of this tent - that's a huge plus - but it just feels cheap, not durable. When I went to set it up for the first time, two poles were badly jammed, they would not extend. One I was able to get to release and the other was hopeless. It must be defective or have been bent somewhere between the factory and arriving at my house. Will be returning this tent.

July 18, 2017
I loved this tent until a storm came an one of the top joints piped. This is not covered in the warranty. The person I dealt with at Voleman could tell me if the piece I ordered would be the right piece. Then I was told this is not covered by the 1 year coverage. Cost to mail this 2.99 piece was 5.99. As a Longtime customer if their products I am very disappointed that the charged me for a piece that should have been under warranty. I will think twice when time to buy more equipment. Very unhappy - at least train your customer service folks which parts are which.
Good tent, needs better-quality connectors.
December 11, 2016
One of the connector pole bases was broken out of the box, but still set up. I had previously read reviews that said to get strong stakes, so I came prepared and just staked it down and had no problems, so I haven't sent it back. If it gets worse next time I use it, I'm going to have to return it or get it fixed, but it's winter. Definitely get strong stakes of you get this tent.***Update***i used this tent for the second time this weekend. FAIL. Another base broke off and two of the rooftop poles would not extend. We finally tied the thing up to a tree and a trailer to keep it up. 60-second set-up? More like 60-min. By now, the only positives I have for this thing is it's size.
Tear down process not easy
October 9, 2016
Set up at home once and had a bit of difficulty getting back into carrying bag. Took on one camping trip and enjoyed the item but not very pleased with set up and tear down.My previous 10x10 Coleman had an electric port specifically designed for cord. The Instant 8 does not.The 10x10 came with rain fly. The Instant 8 does not. Also, the separate rain fly is optional but a bit pricey.Ventilation was OK. The double door zipper system down to the floor is concerning if there is rain. I didn't experience rain and did not want to.I am always very happy with my Amazon purchasing experience. My products arrive on time and in great condition. The reason I rate this tent with 2 stars is because of the tear down process. I've watched numerous videos and read reviews because most tents don't completely go back in as packed. As I mentioned, my trial set up and tear down at home was tricky to get back into case. Never completely got it all the way back into case. After tear down during one use, I was not able to get it into case at all. Thanks Amazon for a great shopping experience and option to return. This item will not be good for my use. I think it may be best set up and taken down by two or more people in order to properly pack away.
Springs in the extendable poles break off after 4-5 uses, rendering the tent useless
September 27, 2016
I have now purchased 2 of these tents. They are great for about 4-5 uses, and then the springs in the extendable poles start to break. Of the 6-7 poles attached to this tent, I had 3 break on one and 4 break on the other. When the springs fail, the tent will not stay all the way extended/open to its max distance. If it's not extended all the way "open", then the tent will collapse on itself. I tried to find additional poles for it, but the 3 yr old model I had, I was unable to find replacement parts for it from Coleman or any other distributor.I love the "instant tent" functionality but after spending close to $400 for 2 tents, I will not purchase this model again.I WOULD NOT RECOMMEND THIS TENT.

Good for 3 uses
July 14, 2017
We have had this tent a little over a year, only used 3 times with no issues. This last time using the tent, one corner of the tent the canvas loop that holds the stake ripped completely off. Luckily, we had some heavy duty twine to see it back on so we could stake the tent down. The plastic rings that hold the tie downs for the canopy both broke. The door opening is aboit 8 inches tall and one of us tripped on it and ripped a hole in a nearby seam. Then, when we were taking down the tent, the hard plastic piece that holds the pole for the door formed a hole at the bottom so the pole will no longer work for the door. This time we have also started to see some bending in the poles when they were out of the tent. It USED to be a good tent, however, after this 4th of use it might not be habitable again.
Broken tent poles, poor quality
September 11, 2016
Broken tent poles. When I received this tent we set it up to try it out. The side tent pole was broken right out of the box. One of the sections of the pole had multiple splits in it. Amazon is great, they sent out another tent right away. When we received the second tent, we set it up and the same problem, multiple splits in the side pole. We are sending it back for a refund. I don't recommend this tent, poor quality.
Good on paper, bad in reality.
July 14, 2016
I researched many tents and thought this one would be perfect for my family, but it isn't even close. First off, it is time consuming and cumbersome to set up. Second, it doesn't breathe at all. If it's hot or even just warm, you'll be stuck in a sweltering tent with it only having high windows on each end and one on the door, and no cross breeze at all. Third, the dimensions are horrible. 16' x 7' is really akward, as it is too long, but not wide enough. There are many other tents on the market that are much better.
AVOID
June 16, 2016
Very disappointed with Coleman! It's roomy, however the poles are very flimsy and don't stay together well. It says 15mins to set up...yeah if they gave you better tent poles, maybe. The rain fly is annoying to put up. The door is set pretty high, it makes it very easy to trip getting in and out, not a good tent for little kids. I would love to return this piece of garbage, unfortunately i bought this last winter and didn't use it until summer.
DO NOT BUY
June 2, 2016
A tent has 1 purpose: shield you from the elements while out in nature. This tent can not handle that. One small wind gust and a pole broke causing me to sleep in a half-tent......very first time I used it. A quick call to customer service reveals that they wont replace the broken pole....I have to buy a new one. Isn't that awesome. Youd be better off spending the $150 on the gas it would take to sleep in your car while it was running. Good luck.James....avid camper/offroader
Don't buy this tent, especially if you are looking for a 'D' door.
August 16, 2015
First off let me start by saying that I usually only buy Coleman tents. We still have and use the 6 person Evanston tent which we LOVE, but wanted more of a Kids in one and adults in the other camping experience and my wife who is 7 months pregnant has trouble with the double door of the screened in tent (a lot of bending over) so we bought this one because it had the 'D' door and it was the same color / material as the Evanston. We are experienced campers. We typically go camping with myself, my wife, my 5 year old daughter and my cousins 13 year old daughter. We just got back from our camping trip with this tent and it performed terribly.1) Coleman usually overestimates how many campers can sleep in a tent by 1 or 2 and I think people expect that for the most part, but this one REALLY exaggerates. It will only sleep 4 car campers with air pads. It is very rectangular, and Coleman counts 8 heads by lining everyone up in one row sleeping vertically along the width. This is absurd because the tent is not deep enough for our air mattresses do not fit in this tent vertically, they have to go horizontally. This means you get 4 air mattresses (1 in each corner with a walkway in between) with some space in the middle of the tent for gear.2) The 'D' door is more trouble than it is worth. I have never had a tent with one so I cannot say if they are all overrated, but this one is a GIANT pain.- The door is rigid because of poles that feed into zippered channels alone the edge. The problem is that they are easier to find in the dark than the zippers that open the door so we were constantly unzipping the poles instead of the door. PAIN- The tent is very long and not very deep. Most primitive camp sites if they have a tent pad are setup for more of a square shape tent. This matters because if you cannot find a perfectly level patch of land that is big enough then the door will not operate properly. In our case, every time we unzipped the door it would pop open.- The hole in the tent is much smaller than the door itself, but the sipper in on the extreme edge of the door. This means that to get to the zippeer from the inside you have to stick your hand between the door and the tent (about a 3 inch overlap) and feel around for the door. We actually got stuck inside temporarily because all of the strings got zippered on the outside so only little metal nubs remained inside that you could not really grab with your hands mostly because of the odd contortion you have to do to reach the zipper in the first place. I had to pull a screw driver out of my bag and use it to push the zipper far enough where I could get my hand in and get the string back. Considering that most tents allow you to SEE the zipper with your eyes and reach for it and open it effortlessly, this is a real PITA.3) I am sure it is an oversight (at least I hope so), but our tent has a few crooked seams and in one spot it left about a 1 inch area with no stitching at all. Would return it for that reason alone, but for all the other reasons I will not be exchanging it.4) Airflow is a problem this tent is not designed to keep you warm and it is also not designed to keep you cool. Tents that have the mesh roof covered by a fly are meant for warm weather. But this tent only has three tiny windows. To be clear, this lack of windows does you no good at night when you want to maybe stay a little on the warm side. The lack of windows can only serve as a negative during the day.5) This tent extended about 2 feet over our ground cover and the small area that did touch the ground was worn thin from tiny - flat - smooth pebbles in one weekend. I would expect that if it got wet the next time out water would come in those spots. This tent is being returned and we are picking up a different one.

Expensive Disappointment - Even after a replacement
October 10, 2017
-Not waterproof-Poles assembled incorrectly-Pole bent after first use during break downI had two of these, the first one had poles assembled incorrectly, and so did the second one. I should have known then but I decided to just fix it myself this time.At the campsite the rain was decently heavy, and you could feel the spray in the tent.I set it up to dry in the garage when we got home, at some point on of the side poles bent.I don't think I'm ever getting another Coleman. Their quality seems to have greatly suffered.
Unfortunately the quality didn't hold up
April 28, 2017
In the end, I've been disappointed. We've used the tent twice over the last six months, and the buttons that click in place to hold poles have already broken out in two places making the tent unusable. I love the concept of an instant tent, but this one just didn't last long enough for me to feel it was worth the money.
very disappointing!
September 27, 2016
We have received this item to our hotel while travelling, and had to use it the same night. I was very disappointed and aggravated to find the tent was not in good condition. One of the corners was seamless!!! No stitch whatsoever! So it was open and mosquitoes kept coming in! Also, one of the doors net had a hole. We couldn't even return it, as we have already made reservations to a camping site, and were on our way. We had no choice but to use it. I would expect a better inspection of a product before it is shipped to a client! This is really not OK. Therefor, I do not recommend.
It's been a waste of time and money
June 3, 2016
This tent was supposed to be instant and not difficult to set up. It broke on the top when we opened it, it took 3 people to set up, and the bars didn't 't want to unlock when trying to put back in package. Then I had to pay for packaging to send back because it wouldn't fit in the original package because the bars wouldn't fold and were stuck. Now I have to wait for an approval for a refund. This was all on the first use. It's been a waste of time and money. :'( I've had a bad year and I thought getting out and buying a instant tent would help me see that life could be good again. However I got stuck in the freezing mountains with a tent I couldn't use.
Snapped!
August 22, 2015
Conducted a test run on the coleman test to make sure things were working prior to my camping trip. In 76 degree weather, it did pretty well. I didn't need to use the stakes and it pretty much stood on its own. After reading the directions for disassembly, I was pretty confident in what I was doing. Wrong! One of the arms broke. According to the instructions, you need to fold the arms (diagram is included for visual learners). After examining the damage, it looks like the pole was incorrectly assembled to the tent. Extremely disappointed, especially since I can not return it.I love coleman. I have a coleman sleeping bag, coleman grill, and coleman canopy. But....this was embarrassing.
FAILURE after 3 uses. Plus, useless in rain
May 27, 2014
DISASTER!!! On the third use FAILURE. One of the leg hinges broke for NO GOOD REASON. I never beat it up, threw it around, or forced anything. And there was no good way to rig it. I ended up hanging the broken leg over the frame of someone else's tent just to be able to use the tent for the weekend (since I was 6 hours from home). DISASTER!!!! Also, in the rain, when you unzip the doors, water floods in, even with the rain fly. It is because the walls of the tent lean in from bottom to top. So as water sheds, if your door is open, it sheds inside. Big design flaw. Returning to Coleman.
