Very Handy
March 16, 2017
I bought this for a good friend who lives off grid, and already has other B&D MAX tools (and therefore has the batteries and charger) He was very impressed with the performance of this tool. He won't be trashing his gasoline chain saw, but this is for small jobs where it doesn't pay to gas up the big saw.
Great little saw!
May 26, 2015
For what it is - a relatively inexpensive electric chainsaw - this thing is awesome! We had some late spring winter storm damage and several larger branches on our trees broke or cracked. I ordered this chainsaw because all the tree companies were several weeks out in removing the broken branches. The saw was easy to put together and the battery charged relatively quickly as well. Once it was all set up, I went out to test it on all the broken branches. The battery lasted the entire time (about 2hrs of on and off sawing) and looked like it had plenty of juice left. It's not a super-powerful saw, but it certainly did the trick for me and saved me a lot of money having someone else take care of it. This saw made quick work of 3 or 4 inch diameter oak branches so I am very happy!
Whacking the "Bush" in Alaska!
March 29, 2015
Black & Decker is a name in tools that I know and trust for making quality products. I was happy to see that they make this battery powered chainsaw. We have a gas chainsaw but like many others have noted, starting it takes more energy than using it. I really needed something easier and faster to use. We're mainly cutting Aspen and some pine for firewood.

As soon as this came in the mail, I pulled out the battery and the charger and got it to cooking. It took about 5 hours as the booklet said to reach a full charge. During that time, I read through the instruction booklet and put the saw together. That didn't take more than a few minutes and requires absolutely no tools. I was impressed with the sturdiness of the saw. The saw is made of metal and plastic and is very light and well-balanced.

I'm not a big, strong lumberjack, I'm a great-grandmother, so I'm not all that keen on chainsaws but doing a job without the right tool is just wrong. This is the right tool for me. I was able to cut a nice pile of logs up in the 20 minutes of operating time for the battery charge. I have a picture of my pile below.

I like the weight and how easy it is to use the saw. I don't like the manual lube of the chain. It's annoying to have to push the little plunger after every cut or so to keep the chain lubed. I like that I feel safe while using the saw. It seems easy to keep it in control as it's not running anywhere near as fast as our gas chainsaw. I also like how easy it is to adjust the tension on the chain if I see it getting a little loose. I don't have to stop what I'm doing and pay attention to taking care of that.

Bottom Line: The price was right and I'm happy with my purchase. If I could do it over knowing what I know now, I would probably opt for the 40V version with the automatic chain lube and a little more power but this will work for me for now.

Day Two: I wanted to add a few thoughts after spending a second day with this little chainsaw "wannabe". Today we tacked a 50+ foot Aspen with approximately a 7 inch diameter. We won't be trying that again. The B&D cuts too slow for a job like this and in the end, the tree fell all wrong even with the right cuts. We again only had 20 minutes of cutting power and that was enough to down the tree and cut it into small enough sections to get on the sled to haul out of the woods. I used my gas powered chainsaw to finish the job of cutting it into firewood.

This is a great little tool for having around the yard for cutting up limbs and fallen trees. It's sturdy, easy to use and well-designed (except for the manual lube on the chain). It's a step up from a hedge cutter and a step down from a gas chainsaw power-wise. Consider your needs and how you will be using this before you buy it.
Amazing performance coupled with light weight!
December 15, 2014
Last week, I hired a tree surgeon to cut down an elm tree (30 foot tall, 16 inch trunk at base) close to the house in the front yard, leaving the material as it fell in order to save a couple of hundred bucks on the job by doing the haul off myself. Since my gas powered Stihl had been stolen earlier this year, and thus being chain saw poor at the moment, I decided to order the Black & Decker LCS1020 20V Max Lithium Ion Chainsaw, 10-Inch for this job. I had previously purchased a B&D 20V drill, and had been impressed with its performance using a 1.2 Amp Hour battery, and since I thought it would be nice to have a smaller chain saw on han for odd jobs, pruning, and such, I figured I couldn't go wrong with the purchase of the LCS1020.

I am glad to say that I didn't go wrong with this purchase..........I wish I would have bought this a long time ago!!! It took me about 5 1/2 hours to do the job outlined above, making what I would estimate to be around 100 cuts tota , and a total cutting time of about 30-40 minutes on q single full charge of the saw's 2.0 Amp Hour battery (supplied with the saw). I almost finished the job in totalnwith just the one battery charge, but alas, it abandoned me at the end. But then, I simply hooked up the other battery I had on hand (1.2 Amp Hour), and used it for another 5 minutes of cutting time to finish off the job, with the smaller battery still have a lot of charge left to it. Now, the largest size cuts that I was made were small, the biggest being 4-5 inches in diameter, I could tell that the LCS1020 would have been up to the task, but likely without as much battery life time.

The light weight of the LCS1020 at 7.2 pounds definitely made the job easier; my other saw at twice the weight would have wore me out! Other things I liked about the LCS1020 were 1) the tool-less chain tensioning mechanism was very easy and held very tight, and 2) the optional notes to use plain vegetable cooking oil for the bar lube that was stated in the instructions. They recommend the option of using vegetable oil as the lubricant especially for use with pruning off limbs from live trees. I went with the vegetable oil largely because I couldn't find my regular chain lube in the garage, and it worked quite well. It does make sense that it would likely be a little more environmentally friendly, I suspect. The manual priming for the lubricant worked well, but I must confess that I wish that it had automatic oiling.

Eventually I will wind up replacing my larger Stihl that was stolen, but I am definitely going to hold off on that until I had a definite need for it. I think the LCS1020 will satisfy all the planned needs I have for a chain saw in the coming future. My days of cutting down trees for firewood and blazing 4 wheeler trails through the woods have long since passed to my youth!

Updated on 3/22/15: Still quite pleased with the LCS1020. Last weekend I had the chance to use the LCS1020 for the second time, taking care of tree branches that fell from a recent ice storm. Prior to starting the job, decided to do a quick sharpening touch up on the saw, and realized I did not have the correct specified size file for sharpening, which is 4.5 mm. I did have a 5 mm file, used it, and it seemed to do the trick nicely and I got the job done with no problems, but I will get the correct size file soon. I have used Oregon's file guide previously, and it works well to maintain correct angles. For the LCS1020, the correct 4.5 mm size file is found in their produt number 31692 at http://smile.amazon.com/Oregon-4-5mm-Chain-Filing-31692/dp/B0002VFEYE/ref=sr_1_1?s=lawn-garden&ie=UTF8&qid=1427062221&sr=1-1&keywords=oregon+31692
All in for cordless
November 28, 2014
Let me start by saying I already have a 10" B&D cut-off saw and an old model electric 7 1/2" circle saw, so I was familiar with the brand.

I've only had this model for a few days but am very satisfied initially after cutting up a fallen tree branch that was just too heavy and bulky to relocate on my farm.

In the above project I had available the two amp/hour Li-ion battery and half expected it to run out of juice since some of the wood was 8" thick. No problem. I finished the job with juice left in the battery. Put it on the charger and was surprised it was showing all green (not flashing as when charging) when I checked later.

I've since ordered the 4 a/hr battery but haven't used it yet. I've gone cordless and ordered some other B&D 20v Max Lithium Ion tools (Matrix Drill and 3 3/8 circle saw, blower, tiller, 5 1/2 in. circle saw, in line extended length pruning saw... and expect these to serve my needs for quite some time.

Thought about waiting for the 40v versions to come out before buying but did a mental assessment of my expected usage and decided on the 20v versions as being adequate.

So far it made the work, be aware has the manual oiling so you need to press the cap to oil the chain. It cuts ok, and if you already have batteries perfect, otherwise can you leave you with the work unfinished,
Perfect for light to medium duty home use
July 26, 2016
I have now used this saw more than a handful of times, and all I can say is WOW!

I have used this chainsaw to trim low branches as well as cut up larger branches that I cut down with the Black and Decker 20V Pole Saw. It also came in handy after a storm blew through a few weeks ago and knocked a large branch into the roadway, blocking one lane of a two lane street. Most of the branches I have cut up using this chainsaw are in the 2-3 inch range, and a 5" branch barely fazed this chainsaw.

The only complaint I have is with the manual pump for the bar and chain oil. It is a rubber bulb with a hole in the top that you have the push in to pump oil to the bar and chain. If you are using the chainsaw in a position more than 20 degrees off of horizontal you have a good chance of a dribble or two of oil coming out, leading to getting oil on your hands whenever you have to pump the oil.

This saw is way more convenient than the 120V electric saws that require you to drag around a drop cord to use them, and 20V is more than adequate for the light to medium tasks I need a chainsaw for. The automatic oiling mechanism on the 40V chainsaw almost swayed me to get that saw over this one, but the main thing that swayed me to this saw was that I already have other B&D 20V batteries that I can use, and with a quick charger only being available for the 20V batteries, I can rotate batteries off of the saw and almost always be up and running.
Excellent tool for minor homeowner yard jobs
March 20, 2016
Excellent tool for common homeowner minor yard jobs. One charge helped me cut few 5-8 inches limbs. Tool is light and easy to assemble and use.
Needs oil bought separately.
Recommend getting an additional battery preferably the larger capacity one as backup.
It would've been 5 stars if the battery was larger, or if it included a spare one.
Nifty 20vMax Chainsaw - UPDATE 2/21/16
February 11, 2015
I was amazed how much power this thing has -- from a battery pack. I like the power, the weight, the balance, the feel, and the functionality of this saw. The only thing I can say I don't love, and it's not a huge problem, is when I cut into a larger piece of wood, the saw really seems to throw the chips and pull the wood into the housing on the front of the saw. I'm used to gas chainsaws that have the "steel fingers" that come out from the front of the saw to grip the log while it is being cut. I think this saw was created for the casual user moreso than the lumberjack, so the designers probably decided if a person wanted a heavier-duty saw, they would buy one, which I have. This saw is really good for trimming up small pieces of firewood, for example: I cut some firewood for my woodstove, and I neglected to trim a small branch off of a piece of wood, and that piece won't fit into the stove unless I cut it off. This saw to the rescue! Just put a battery in it, check the chain tightness (easy with the adjusting wheel) check the bar oil, and away we go. Actually, if I had already done the checks at the beginning of the day, I would just pick it up and use it. I have not used up an entire Lithium 20vMax battery in one sitting with this saw, so I cannot say for sure how long a battery lasts, but I will say I made numerous small cuts and still had plenty of battery. I will report back if I have any problems. I believe B&D now has a 40v chainsaw, and I imagine that is an absolute beast... One thing I haven't done yet is to try to cut framing lumber with this saw. I may attempt to cut some 2x4s or similar with this. I imagine it would be a much rougher cut than using a chop saw or sliding circular saw, but it could be a quick fix to trim down an area where cosmetically the cut is not a big deal. I think I gave about $125 for this saw (with a battery worth $45ish included), so it was no-brainer for me. I use this saw primarily out at my cabin as I mentioned above to trim pieces of wood so they fit better into the woodstove. If you have an occasional use for this saw, or small branches to trim around your property, and especially if you already have some 20vMax devices, I believe this is a good buy.

UPDATE 2/21/16: I am changing my rating from 5 stars down to 4 stars. After just a little bit of use, say 5 minutes, the chain loosens up on my saw, and I have to stop an re-tighten it. I'm hoping this is just the case with my saw. I have not read any other reviews recently to check. Overall, still a great little 20v saw, and a decent price. No other complaints at this time.

Good Saw. Lousy Oiler

November 29, 2016
I'll be honest. If you use it for what it is then it's a 4-5 star. But let's be honest. It's an electric saw. What do I mean? It is a light duty saw that could trim some branches but that's about it. Yes you probably can fell a 12" tree with lots of patience but it's not what it's made for. Prune some 4" or less limbs and your good. I strongly recommend the 4ah battery as the stock one runs out of power in 10 minutes of use. Beyond that gas power. My experience? Have a 120 acre Wood lot own a number of different saws from $800 to $99

I am giving it a 3 stars because it did not cut the small branches (I have some scrubs that need to be trimmed) very well. It kept stuck by the branches and I had to disassemble it to clear the branches, I decided to keep it because of the price (I bought it as a gold box deal).
Performance is really good for the price
November 10, 2015
Performance is really good for the price. The battery lasts about an hour to 1 1/2 hours (not constant; off and on working in the yard).
But the chain sometimes gets stuck or comes flying off the rail/blade no matter how to tight you set the chain. And mine leaks lubricating oil at the bottom. First, I thought it was because I had it hanging on the wall at a slight angle but then I put it on the floor flat...and, it still leaks! So, now I leave the reservoir very low/to empty and put a towel under it. Kind of a pain.

I found oil leak while I was working because of oil plug automatically being loosen. The oil plug can't securely tighten. It is design issues other than customer misuse. I do not recommend this product to others who want to use various angle of chainsaw. The other features are good for me, cutting availability, noise, price, easy to use, weight and size. Only issue is OIL PLUG.
