Fancy Schmancy Digital Termostat
September 7, 2017
We were able to get $125 in credits so that helped cover a decent chunk of the price for the Nest. We live in an area where the temps don't vary much so I don't know how much money we will save long tern, winter will likely be the true test. So until then I don't know that we are getting the full benefit of a connected thermostat other than the credit from the electric and gas companies. The history shows no usage over the past 10 days so I'd say that's pretty energy efficient!I do really like the design and the notifications when there are energy rushes where we can choose whether or not to participate in reduced energy use for credits to our bill. The thermostat is also nice to look at, which is something I never thought I would say about thermostat. I don't use the app much but again it's pretty cool it can tell you the humidity reading in your house. So yeah, thumbs up on the smart thermostat. If it does anything cool I will have to come back and update this review.
A ffun programmable thermostat by nest.com
July 9, 2017
This is a very fun thermostat for the energy conscious homeowner. This thermostat is very easy to install. I did not read the instruction manual but rather went to the nest.com website as it was most helpful. Be careful about where the wires go on the new unit based on the compatibility Diagram generated by nest.com. My emergency wire was incorrectly placed on their diagram. If you have any doubt call their help number for assistance. I found the technician very useful. The thermostat can be programmed from the unit on the wall, the Nest app, or your desktop computer. The nest app is best used, in my opinion, for making minor changes to your settings. If you really want to make serious changes, such as calender settings, it is best to use your desktop. I highly recommend this thermostat. Also, be sure to check with your utility company for any possible rebates.
Very easy to install
July 28, 2016
Very easy to install. I had a 2nd generation Nest at my old house and bought this one for the new home. I ended up using the included wall plate because there was a large hole in the wall from the old thermostat. Eventually I'd like to patch it up because the Nest looks cleaner by itself. My 2nd generation had a little more resistance to turn the dial - this one turns smoother which I like.I wired in single stage heat, single cooling, and a common wire to avoid any battery charging issues. I'll add a whole home humidifier to the * input this winter which I had at my previous house. Nest controls the humidity flawlessly. One thing I would like to see is some type of frost control algorithm - at my old house, when the temp was -20 F in the winter, I'd start to see frost on the windows. Would be nice if the Nest could use the outside temperature to dynamically control the humidity. Or just allow programming the humidistat based on outdoor temp.I turned off the learning schedule feature - my schedule was too erratic for this to be useful, so I just program a 5+2 schedule. Big benefits I see with the Nest is Auto Away and the ability to remotely control the temperature/humidity. Being able to see the usage history is nice as well.Great product.
Very Nice!

I admit, my old thermostat was about as low-tech as it gets - just a yellowing plastic box with a single metal bar that required manual sliding left or right to trigger heating or A/C - so it's hard not to like anything that replaced it, but I really do love the Nest thermostat! It does save me money in the long run because previously, I had to slide the old thermostat's little bar to a certain position, and then if I wasn't near the thermostat when I was sufficiently cool or warm, I would just let the heating or A/C continue to run needlessly because I didn't want to go all the way upstairs and slide the little metal bar again. Now, I just make a couple of taps in the app and voila, instant adjustment! There are also a host of other neat features that I don't personally use (auto-learning, home/away geofencing, schedules) but that I can imagine would be tremendously useful for others. Installation did hit a small snag when the A/C would only stay on for a few minutes and then turn off; the technician was baffled. But he made a quick call to Nest Support and the representative was super friendly and helpful, and was able to walk us through some troubleshooting that ultimate determined that I needed to have a common wire (C wire) installed, which took only another 20 minutes to install, and I was back in business and have had no problems since then. I'm very pleased!
Must-have for any gadget lover
March 20, 2016
I moved into an apartment a month ago and one of the first things I wanted to do was replace the thermostat - which was the typical old-timey circular one which has never been accurate anywhere I've lived. I don't pay for gas at my place, but the A/C is electric and I knew that cooling was going to cost me in the summer - I have about 20 feet of floor-to-ceiling windows facing the sun half of the day. After doing some reading and comparing to other smart themostats, I found this one to have the best app, features, and price for me.I won't know how much it'll actually save me since I haven't spent a summer here yet but I can imagine the Away feature alone makes it worth it. Yeah, I can just go and physically turn the cooling off or something whenever I leave the house, but being able to have it on a schedule or automatically turn off when it senses me out of the house is worth the cost of having it be done automatically. So with next to no electrical knowledge and a screwdriver, I managed to get it set up in less than an hour. It's so easy that I'm inclined to say that unless you have a physical disability preventing you from doing it yourself, it's a waste of money to pay someone to do it.There's already been a few updates since I first installed in (including a recent update to make better use of the "Away" feature), and I can't say I've had any issues or bugs yet. It deals well with the sunlight hitting it and doesn't over-heat the place from thinking it's warmer than it is. Best of all, ComEd had no problem giving me a nice rebate to cut down the cost of the device to nearly half - it was a no-brainer, basically.
So glad I took the plunge and bought it!
January 15, 2016
I really struggled on which smart thermostat I would get - the ecobee, the Honeywell, or the Nest. Ultimately, the Nest won out due to aesthetics but the concerns I had from the negative reviewers here kind of haunted me.I was able to install this myself in MAYBE 5 minutes. My 5 wires were C, G, Y, W, and R so I wasn't sure exactly where to connect them to the Nest. I did a quick google search and came to Nest's support where you click on what wires you do have and it tells you exactly how to connect them to the Nest. That was a neat feature.I did have one issue with connectivity but it was trying to connect via wifi to my Apple Airport (from 2007), The nest said it was connected to my network, and it was, but it couldn't get past firewalls or something. Anyway, I just disconnected my Apple Airport and had the Nest connect straight to my wifi router and it worked like a charm. I've had similar issues with other things trying to connect to the Airport so I knew that it wasn't the Nest itself.Last thing - I was hoping that I could install the Nest just bare against the wall, but I couldn't. There were still holes outside the Nest. If I had to complain about anything it would be that the trim plate included isn't quite as nice as what I think they should include. For this price, I feel like even a rounded piece of sheet metal that would compliment the sleekness of the Nest should be included. I bought a metal back plate from Amazon for $25 but it's bigger than what I needed and kind of takes away from the aesthetics. The Nest has been up a week in my house and has functioned exactly as expected. Two days after me setting the thermostat to my wake up temperature and going to bed temperature and it did it automatically. So cool!OH! And I almost forgot to mention...they include a cute, higher quality screwdriver to disconnect everything from your old system and connect it to your new system. This was an absolute unexpected delight to find and I wanted to mention it

I love this controller so much
September 4, 2017
I love this controller so much, thanks to honeywell! Seriously, unless you are looking for the futuristic look, why spend $300 to buy a nest? My home has two AC system, and I have replaced both thermostat with this guy! Here is why I like it:1) Super friendly to people who travel. App is easy to use and interface is very intuitive. You never have to worry that your home gets too hard/cold, or your utility bill exploded in extreme weather2) For landlords, you can control home temperature without having your tenant fudging with the temperatures while you are away3) You can set temperature schedule to make home environment more comfortable.Note: You do need to muddle through the installation process. We ended up tweaking a bit on my AC's circuit board a bit.... But overall it's well worth the investment!
Honeywell WI-Fi installed (this one) in 30 minutes. Get one and figure out the C wire and you are all set!
June 26, 2017
This is my 2nd purchase of this wi-fi thermostat and I'm very pleased with the results so far. The first one was purchased about 2 years ago and was the typical $99 but the one installed today only set me back $79 BUT I was surprised that for the first time in probably 15 years of using Amazon, I was charged sales tax. That ride was bound to come to a stop sooner or later. Oh well, still can't beat the great prices and free shipping on most items and I'll continue to use Amazon as much as possible.Anyway, the reason you're reading this is to gain some clue as to what/how to get that dreaded "C" wire that is required to operate this device in wi-fi mode. I realize all systems/set ups are different but in my case, I did have at least 1 or 2 spare wires on the existing thermostat wire and was ultimately able to connect that extra wire to a 24V continuous connection within the air handler or heating unit, if you prefer. I'll admit, the one I installed a couple years ago was a real test of my wits and my will. Conservatively, if I count the time researching the internet and climbing in and out a dozen times to where the gas furnace resides, it took me about 4-5 hours...I know, ouch, but I've found the convenience of adjusting the thermostat from anywhere in the world to be well worth it, hence the 2nd purchase for our downstairs unit that was installed today. Redemption was had when I met the mailman today and had my new unit mounted, wired and working in about 30-35 minutes, start to finish! What was my secret? The set up was very closely matched to the work I did a couple years ago and with just a little luck on my side, I connected the extra C wire to the correct wire nut right off the bat. This unit is an old school hydronic system (uses hot water to provide the heat for the house) matched to a conventional AC condensing outdoor unit so I wasn't so sure but again, all systems go in about 30 minutes. In a nutshell, you have to connect that C wire, assuming you have a spare wire already in your thermo wire, to 24v continuous electrical supply in order to power and run this thermostat. I'm sure electricians and AC guys may find this amusing and could do something like this blindfolded but for a commoner (there's that C reference again), this was a major score to get this one running quickly. Love it!
Simple to install and simple to use WiFi Thermostat. Works with Alexa!!!
February 24, 2017
For $84 and free 2 day shipping, this is the best WiFi thermostat for the price. I looked at all the expensive options, but I eventually chose this based on simplicity and the fact that you can do pretty much everything from the thermostat itself. I had a honeywell thermostat that looked exactly the same, except this one has one extra button. That one only gave me the ability for weekend and weekday schedule. With this thermostat, I can have a different program for each day. Just that alone is a major upgrade. The WiFi capabilities are much more than what I could ask for. Only gripe I have about the WiFi is that it is not dual band and only works with 2.4ghz networks. The app is simple to use and offers a few more benefits than using the thermostat on the wall. With the app, you can group days you want to have the same schedule and set them all at once. You can also set a hold for a specified amount of time. If you change the temperature it will say hold until your next set point. Then you can change that time to whatever you want. Then at the end of the hold it will automatically return to the schedule. It also works with Alexa once you have enabled the Honeywell Skill. Here are things that I don't like, but are not enough to take a star away.-There is no battery backup and it requires a C Wire. But since it's on WiFi, it will automatically set itself if you disconnect or if there is a power outage.-There are no reminders to tell you that you need to change your filter.-If you manually change the temperature, it will show "hold until XX:XX" on the screen instead of the actual time. They could have programmed it to also show the current time at the top corner or something. All in all, it is a GREAT thermostat. The WiFi capabilities are nice, and if you forget about the WiFi or the WiFi stops working, it's still a GREAT thermostat. If you don't need all the fancy features of the nest or ecobee, then this is the thermostat for you. I just want to be able to change my temperature if my schedule randomly changes, and this allows me to do that. I am more than satisfied.
I am amazed. The setup was simple
December 14, 2016
I have had my WiFi thermostat online now for about two weeks. I am amazed. The setup was simple. The app for my phone is very easy to access and use. I live in South Dakota where it gets very cold in the winter - it is 2 below actual as I write this - and very hot in the summer 112 last July. We travel a bit and it is such a relief to put the system on permanent hold while we are away and as we return home kick the system back on and have a comfortable house to come home to. I am traveling 230 miles to home in the morning, when I am about an hour out I will release the hold and by the time I get home, the house will be right at 70 degrees. It is currently holding at 48 degrees.Of course I have not had the system long and if it fails or begins acting goofy, I will update this review. As of now, I would give it 6 stars if I could.DakotaHoneywell RTH6580WF Wi-Fi 7-Day Programmable Thermostat
Great Funtionality for great price
November 8, 2016
I absolutely love this brand and this model of Wi-Fi thermostat. I have purchased 5 of this exact model off of Amazon and absolutely cannot be more pleased with the product, the price and how it functions. Number one the price for a Wi-Fi thermostat is normally much higher. I purchased these for around $85 and yes that should be a concern when most Wi-Fi thermostats are twice that. I think the biggest difference is that this model does not have a fancy screen with all kinds of colors and digital eye pleasing features. However not knowing in advance I thought this would be a problem. It is not because with Wi-Fi thermostats you will never stand in front of that thermostat again. Once you install it you will use your iPhone or other wireless device almost 100% of the time to program and adjust the temperature. I have several businesses with these Wi-Fi thermostats and one in my home. It is one simple app on my iPhone that I open and can quickly monitor, adjust and if needed make program changes to the thermostats. The functionality is wonderful, the ability to program and making temperature changes is so easy. I will definitely buy this again when needed and I highly recommend the Honeywell because number one the price is some competitive and number to the functionality is amazing. I did purchase a different brand and the install and functionality was much more complicated and just not worth the fun of having a different brand. So when needed I went back to the Honeywell.
Great cheaper alternative to nest
September 19, 2016
This may not do as much as a nest, but it does what matters. It is a programmable thermostat that you can control remotely. As everyone says this requires a c wire. Mine did not have the wire and the existing wire was old and wearing out. Great thing is that the wire for my furnace is a simple run and replacing it was quick and easy. I do have some hobbyist experience with low voltage wiring so I was able to hook the new furnace wire up easily. Of course all situations will probably be different. I understand there is a workaround if you do not have a c wire, there is a drawback but it was not a major one. I do not remember the drawback. After it was installed all I needed was a smart phone or tablet to connect the thermostat to my WiFi. There was an update where the thermostat had to reboot but that is to be expected and welcomed with things like these. During the reboot the furnace unit shut off but only for a minute.TL;DR great WiFi thermostat, just check that you have a c wire on your existing thermostat or feel comfortable with wiring for a fix or workaround.

Easy to install by sending a picture of current wiring ...
April 13, 2017
Easy to install by sending a picture of current wiring to the company and getting a picture of how to wire. Love that I can control with my phone while in another room or away from the house. The learning part of it can be a little annoying because it makes assumptions sometimes off of one day's history. For example, I woke up the other night freezing because it turned my thermostat down 3 degrees because it made it a schedule to do that every night even though I only had done it one night before. However, I would recommend and expect it to learn more as I use it more often. I have only had it for about 3 months.
Nest Software Malfunctioned
January 31, 2017
I was initially impressed with my nest. The more time I spent exploring it, I found nice capabilities. Then problems started after two months. My home is in the colder climate of northern Michigan. While in Florida I checked my nest status. The nest was not calling for heat and temperature was dropping fast. I called the nest techs which were polite and helpful. They said my nest was wired for a heat pump which I do not have. Just impossible. The nest was actually calling my ac to cool down the house. Luckily I got a heating contractor to resolve it that was very familiar with nest. The nest was properly wired, but when wiring was check via the wi if it said it was erroneously wired for a heat pump. The nest was removed and reset. Now functions properly. The tech said they have never seen this malfunction before, but it's noted in their website. I asked for a replacement which they promptly sent. I'm now requesting reimbursement for my very expensive contractor services. This will be a good test if they stand behind their products. We will see.A month later Nest did reimburse me for the furnace tech visit. They have integrity. Nice to see today.
easily solved for the most part
January 16, 2017
I bought the open box, the down side to this was no instructions or screws, easily solved for the most part. I did find the nest website was hard to navigate for help. the set up instructions are simple but because it was open box it recommended calling the 800 number for help resetting it. The tech support was fast and friendly, but if the website was easier I could have done it all myself. All they did was tell me to charge it and do a system reset which wasn't all that hard. The set up is simple as long as you charge it, I could not find any information on needing a charge or how long a charge lasts. The positive is it's easily programmable, and easy to use on your phone. Very simple to turn the heat up and down, and the unit feels very solid. Good buy, much better than an old digital thermostat. You can turn the heat up and down without connecting to the internet,
Happy with installation experience. Hope it saves money
April 15, 2016
Nest third generation purchased from Amazon reseller. The box showed evidence of a label removed. Shrink wrap meticulously razor trimmed around removed label and damaged box area painted white. Not sure what to make of that but the product was not damaged and worked fine.Just what you would expect. Simular to an iPhone, everything just worked. The free app is simple and functional. Scheduling is fast drag and drop. Love the connection to my iPhone location. My old programmable was basically a set temperature and press hold device. Programming was too difficult to constantly change to my irregular schedule. Not sure if it will find me close to home and adjust temp automatically. We will find out. Price $218 + tax-free shipping. $100 ComEd rebate. Four stars because packing was fondled without disclosure. At the end of the day I hope to recoup $118 over the next year's heating cost. I use propane heat and pay about $2000/ year. If it saves 6% there is my justification. I will probably never audit the savings and just assume happened. I will settle for just coming home to a temperature adjusted house. As a traveling empty nesters we like that we have access to our home temperature from remote and that it will alert if something is wrong. My furnace went out twice last winter 2016 with my old controller (igniter then exhaust blower). I was home both times. No alerts, just a cold house. That feature alone is worth the price of admission.
Still a great thermostat, but upgrading between models should be easier...and it needs a remote sensor!
February 18, 2016
I like nest's so much, I upgraded from the first generation to the third generation, mostly to get farsight, since my nest is mounted in a weird place, and being able to activate it from several feet away is useful. It's still a great thermostat, and works in concert with my nest protects. The only things keeping me from giving it five stars is a lack of an additional temperature sensor, and a lack of a graceful upgrade process. Basically, one has to reinput everything after a new install.
Generally fantastic, but a few things could improve
January 7, 2016
The Nest has been a lifesaver for us! I can program it to start heating up the apartment 30 minutes before I wake up so I'm not shivering the moment I step out of bed, turn off when I leave for work, turn back on when I'm on my way home...well, you get the drill now. The best part is that I can control all this on my iPhone app, which is so incredibly convenient even for when I'm just in a different room and feeling lazy :P.However, there are a couple of things I would change:1) Our old thermostat was hooked up to a high voltage system, so we actually had to use a relay between the Nest and the wiring to make the voltage conversion happen. I know that Nest sells European versions that natively work on high voltage systems. It would be very useful if this version of the product were made available for American consumers as well, since I know I'm not the only one who's had to do this to get the Nest to work in their home!2) Show me the current temperature, not the target temperature! Reading other reviews here has proven that I'm not the only one with this gripe.

Basic features, wifi works well, good deal.
April 6, 2017
Installed two in Les than an hour, work well.had to climb up to attic to turn off the power and connect the C wire. Setup takes a few steps, follow the instructions and be patient, you'll be fine. One of the unit had one loose wire socket, so one the wires is not secure but just sits there, may cause problems later on, too lazy too exhangeI've always had Honeywell in the past 20 years, they are basic features but reliable. That's what I like. Not getting those fancy smart device things, it is out of control, we will all be brain dead.
I wish the back light stayed on.
November 6, 2016
I ordered this to control a gas stove we put in our basement. I wanted a WIFI thermostat so I could remotely turn the heat up before we went downstairs for the evening and then automatically turn down at 10 PM when we go to bed. The thing I don't like about it is that you can't have the back light stay on all the time. I have a Honeywell touch panel one in the hall upstairs which controls the HVAC. That one you can have the light stay on.
WIFI Headaches - but works with limits
August 17, 2016
As a control freak and someone who occasionally forgets to change the thermostat before leaving for the day, this was an affordable solution that works for my needs. Haveing a similar Honeywell unit previously installed - the wiring was nearly the same. The biggest headache came from the WFI setup and im a damn computer tech. The bottom line is there must be NO SPACES in you WIFI SSID. I didnt test underscore ( _ ) but my assumption is it will not work either. Also, do not use special characters in your SSID (!@#$ etc) as they really arent supported.Another thing I didnt see mentioned in other reviews that i saw is that there is no data logging - you cant see what the high/low was yesterday or anything logging/data anywhere. You are literally just getting a Wifi controlled thermostat and for MOST people this will be enough. Abrupt weather changes/changing while on vacation/ easier programming schedules -- great for those instances. This will be a temporary unit for us until we replace our heat pump and air handler. Then we will decide on new WFI thermostat since there are rebates available. Most likely will not be another Honeywell unless their higher end stuff provides more control/data (logging temperature, prevent emergency heat, estimated costs, etc). In the end, i got what I wanted - a wifi controlled thermostat to change when I forget too. Now that I have it - i now know I want more
Nothing fancy, but a very solid device with some solid extras
May 12, 2015
Easy enough to connect (take pictures of the wires before removing old one) physically and then electronically to WiFi. Register the device with Honeywell and install the Honeywell app on your smart phone. Using the app (or even via the website interface) makes it much easier to modify the schedule. Plus, you can configure the device to send you an alert if the power goes out. It's hard to get excited about a thermostat, but this one worked where the Nest did not. We've got two of them and for much less than 1 Nest. The WiFi setup can be a bit daunting for those less computer savvy, but if you follow the manual it will work. One item of note, if you connect and then change your Wifi password or network settings - in the manual, it walks you through "forgetting" the WiFi settings so you can connect again. That is easier to do than setting it up, but you will need the manual to decode what the numbers mean.
I have only furnace at home (no A/C). There ...
November 13, 2014
I have only furnace at home (no A/C). There were three wires to my old thermostat : Rh, W and G. Rh was jumped to Rc, but probably not relevant since I do not have an A/C. I shifted G to C at furnace and used it for C at thermostat. WiFi setup was a breeze and I could remotely control the system now. 4 stars because of an issue with the website. I can't change the schedule online. It says "Schedule Loading It normally takes 10 minutes...." every time I visit. If it ever loads, I will update here. Let me know whether anyone else faces this issue.Update. The issue "schedule loading" persists. Customer support gave me two options 1) wait for a few more days or 2) a complex hacking/resetting method. I am not ready for the second method so I am still waiting. While waiting, I am giving three stars.Update (11/2015). Honeywell fixed the issue at server end. It works as expected on apps and websites. I recently had to change the wifi router password. Resetting wifi parameters is not straightforward - you have to press fan and up button and select item 39. I wish they explained this in the manual.
Great Idea
March 24, 2013
This is a great idea and, once installed, works like a charm. I was disappointed in that it cost me over $500 to have 2 of them installed. The website says its easy to install and I'm no stranger to electrical work, but for my situation (my house is 14 years old), I could not install it myself and it took 3 installers 4 hours to make them both work. That said, they do work great. I have been across the country and was able to adjust the temp settings in the house via my iphone. The programming was easy and quick and I think we are saving money on oil.

First thermostat defective
August 17, 2017
I give this 3 stars because the first one I received was defective. I paid my HVAC company $73 to come out for the install, and it wouldn't work. The wires were pulling the electrical amps required, but no luck. The customer service rep I called, after debating with me and my installer for 20 minutes, finally said they would send a replacement. Another $73 to my installer and the second one worked. I'm going to contact the company and try to get my 1st installation fee refunded, since the product was defective. This was quite frustrating. My installer hasn't had good luck with the Nest thermostat, so time will tell how long this lasts. There are other brands of thermostats with much better warranties. Think twice before you buy. If you have the skill set to change it out yourself, then you are ahead of the game.
Looks nice, but does not work as well as claimed
July 7, 2017
Installation is not bad, setup involves a lot of steps, and it keeps wanting to dial back the temperature settings. I find that I have to keep checking to make sure it hasn't decided to only cool to 77 instead of the 74 I told it to. I suppose it will learn and adjust eventually, but it has been several weeks now and it keeps wanting to change settings while I'm asleep. It also only has one sensor (like most conventional units) so I have to guess what to set it to in order to make sure that my office (south facing, second floor) gets enough air conditioning. If I had this to do again, I might have been better off with something that uses multiple sensors. The software interface on my phone is easy enough to use, but not great.
Seems to be improving.
November 29, 2016
I have had this thermostat installed for two days. The ambient temperature fluctuates in error from one to three degrees higher than the actual inside temperature. It is normally two degrees off with the error fluctuating from one to three degrees. I never had even a cheap thermostat do this. I am feeling sorry that I bought this brand. I thought I was getting the best qualitity but obviously not!
I like the remote control and the easy setup
August 26, 2016
To be honest the novelty of it wears off quickly and it becomes just another thermostat but I like the remote control and the easy setup.I wish I could have purchased 2 but at this price point it's not worth it and the app makes it accessible on your smartphone so it's handy to change the temps as necessaryNot sure if I'm saving any money with it but I'm sure it's better than the 20 year old unit I had before.Good replacement for an older thermostat but not worth it if yours is less than 10 years old and you really want remote.control and are away from home frequently during the day at odd intervals
... the installation instructions for a complete novice which is great as long as this thermostat is replacing a thermostat ...
June 21, 2016
The manufacturer created the installation instructions for a complete novice which is great as long as this thermostat is replacing a thermostat with the exact same wiring (and labeled the same). I spent significant time on line figure out how to wire this to my system because the information provided with the thermostat was really minimal. I am happy now that I have it working; however, I nearly sent it back due to the installation frustration.
Excellent customer service, but still waiting for ROI

I put Nest thermostats in the upstairs and downstairs of my home in NC this past winter. I was very pleased with the level of customer service provided by Nest, as I was able to take a picture of my current wiring and the customer service team created a custom diagram that showed exactly how to install the new thermostat.I love the wireless capabilities and the cell phone app that allows immediate adjustment from any location. The jury is still out on utility savings. One month my home was ranked as one of the most efficient in its class and another month (using the same heating patterns) it was ranked less than the most efficient. I will give three stars until I see a better ROI and may update at that time.

Wake won't work earlier than 2:15 AM. Poor documentation and customer support.
May 16, 2017
This model works well and the app is fairly easy to use. I would have rated this a 4 or even five except for two things:1. The Honeywell documentation is weak, particularly from a troubleshooting perspective, and the phone support is even worse.2. This model has a software bug that does not allow the wake time to be set at 2:00 AM or earlier. The wake set-point will be ignored if set earlier than 2:15 AM. Email support claims this is a "calibration", but this "feature" isn't documented and I have used several other brands of programmable thermostats that don't have this handicap.
- Easy Installation - Easy Configuration/scheduling
July 20, 2016
Pros:- Easy Installation- Easy Configuration/scheduling.Cons:- Loud clicking sound each time the thermostat starts/stops the AC (Very annoying).- Cannot control using local WIFI (LAN). You must control via internet using mytotalconnectcomfort.com website.
Not sure it's worth over $100...
October 19, 2015
Product is okay, but could be better. Their controller app for Android is very, very basic and needs a LOT of work, but it functions for VERY basic stuff, if you don't mind it crashing and having to restart a lot..I do wish, though, I had waited 2 weeks, as the price dropped $10.00.Yes, I would very likely still buy it, as I live in the Desert southwest and need to reduce my power usage to as close to zero between 3:00 pm and 6:00 pm. But any programmable t-stat will do that.If their wifi app interface was better, it would be worth 4+ stars,,
Good luck with the WiFi
April 24, 2015
As other reviewers have noted the set-up of the WiFi is no simple task. I do not knopw what the problem was the first two time I tried but finally had success on the third try. The biggest frustration was getting it into "Wifi set up" mode. The in structions said that if "when" the set-up fails you need to pull the unit off the wall for 10 seconds and it should start over. In my experience this did not work even when it was unplugged for over 5 minutes. There should be way to force the unit into wifi set-up without pulling it off the wall. On the programming front it was very tedious until I noticed the option to set multiple days to the same schedule. Too bad this was not explained from the start so that I could have avoided the frustration of setting up Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday on the same schedule.
Honeywell Tech Support is Laughable
March 6, 2015
This product worked as advertised eventually. Tech support from Honeywell is essentially non-existent. The thermostat apparently is not compatible with my Zyxel router from Centurylink. Called tech support and they could only read me the manual before hanging up on me and not calling back even though they asked for a call back number. When I called back, the new tech had never heard of a firewall. You will need to have someone who is internet tech savvy to make sure the WIFI hookup will work. In some cases, router ports may need to be opened. I had to disconnect and essentially reformat the thermostat about 8 times before it worked. Most was due to the router incompatibility.
Good product. A few quirks.
June 16, 2014
UPDATE: After two years, it started behaving erratically (maybe got fried in the same storm that took out my computer?). In any case, for a replacement I opted for the Sensi UP500. After using the Sensi, I've lowered my rating of this product from 4 to 3 stars. See my review for that product.Basically, it does what it's supposed to. It's relatively painless to install (assuming you have the correct wiring setup and wireless network). And when combined with the app and online access, it's very easy to use.The mobile app is pretty good, but (annoyingly) requires you to login with an 8-digit password every single time you launch. And it's missing some really no-brainer features, like a "change filter" reminder, or the ability to automatically switch from heat to cool, based on a temp range. Or location awareness (my phone knows when I'm home, so why doesn't the app pass on that info to the thermostat, and adjust the temp accordingly?)The website is a little clumsy (it's not at all clear how to get from the landing page to the schedule). And I was really disappointed to see there's no data tracking (How long was my system running over X period? etc, etc). But for a fraction of the cost of competitors, it's hard to complain.USER TIP:I noticed shortly after I set the schedule, that the AC was turning itself on BEFORE the time I had it scheduled to go to a lower temp at bedtime (up to an hour early). I couldn't figure out why, so I contacted support. This is the email I received:[Adaptive Intelligent Recovery, also known as Smart Response, is a feature that allows the thermostat to turn on the system earlier than programmed, so the house is at the programmed temperature by the onset of the comfort period. // The Adaptive Intelligent Recovery feature calculates the recovery ramp based on the number of degrees away from the desired set point and previous equipment performance. The recovery ramp determines the optimum time to turn the heating or cooling system on. If the set point is reached too early or too late, the ramp is adjusted for the next day's recovery, until the set point is achieved at the desired time. // It is necessary to allow the thermostat at least 10 days to "learn" a new program. If the set point is adjusted or the thermostat is switched to off during the recovery period, the thermostat interprets this as a new program input, and the learning period restarts at day one. Please be patient while your thermostat is in this learning phase. // If you would like to disable this feature, press and hold the Fan button and the up arrow key for five seconds. The screen will then change, and you will see two numbers appearing. Press the Next button until the number on the left becomes 13. Use the arrow keys to change the number on the right to 0, then press done.]

5 Star Product - 1 Star Support
September 6, 2017
So here is a 5 star product with 1 star customer support system (hence the 2). Easy to install, amazing tech, GREAT design. When I went to install mine, though the install went perfectly (and really simple), and I looked up to make sure my wiring was compatible (it was, per Nest's site), the batteries immediately drained on both devices (I bought two). Spent an hour with Level 1 support (who was very nice and supportive) with no AC on a 103 deg day, then was referred to Level 2, who was a total *&$#. Got on the phone and said, "Sorry, it just doesn't work with some systems." No effort to determine what else might be wrong, could be tried, etc. I asked why they sent me to Level 2 if there would be no support provided there and his answer was essentially, "I don't know, I just work here." I was stunned - I'd never seen customer service that bad provided anywhere, let alone a company like Nest. Refusing to give up, I called a local HVAC support vendor the next day and was told, "Oh yeah, this is super common with those. You just need to have a common wire pulled or just hooked up." Guy came out and solved the problem instantly (in fact, the common wire was already there and just needed to be connected differently than standard). I had to spend $300 on a visit to check and reinstall the units, which now work perfectly. We all know that if, this is "super-common," somebody in Nest customer support (especially Level 2) should have been completely familiar with the conditions I was describing (as they instantly were at the HVAC vendor) and prepared to advise me to just contact a vendor and solve it with the common wire, but there was no such help provided - just "you're out of luck." How many Nests have been unnecessarily returned to them because of that customer support? So I'm a huge fan of the product -- just be aware that you might encounter less-than-stellar customer support if you have issues. Be prepared to investigate further if the answer doesn't get you where you need to go.
Not so Good
August 31, 2017
After using this product for almost a year I have found it to be a complete waste of money. It worked ok last winter on heat but when I changed over to AC this summer it has required constant attention and numerous resets and clearing memory. The worst thing is that it can be over set temp by as much as 5 degrees before it comes on. WiFi control and Alexa control work fine. The smart learning feature is just so-so. I still have a warranty on it but I won't bother trying to see if Nest support can do anything as I am not happy with it at all.
Everything seemed fine with the Nest
August 16, 2017
They're just ok. After 1 year I had to replace one. It caused my furnace to "sutter" when trying to click on. Everything seemed fine with the Nest, but I switched it with another and there were no furnace issues. While it's supposedly covered under warranty, how long do I have to wait for a new one? Probably too long, so I bought another. A $250 expense. If I hadn't bought 2 of them, I would've gone with another Smart Thermostat brand. The "auto learn" setting is annoying as heck. It never finds the proper temperature you really want automatically. Because of the dining room location of one of my thermostat, it'll put on "auto away" and temps with rise (not enough traffic in there to detect people). The wifi connection is the best part. There's really no other benefit to these.
Falls Short For Vacation Rental Properties
April 25, 2017
I'm evaluated this product for a vacation rental I own and it fell short. I wanted to provide guests with an easy to use thermostat that had some temperature limits I could control. Unfortunately when you lock the thermostat in heat/cool mode, then the guest can't control the temperature at all. The thermostat just maintains the range I set. In just heat mode or just cool mode, then the guest can control the temperature within the limit, but I need heat/cool mode since nights are cold and days are hot.For a home (not vacation rental) the thermostat is decent. Nest is good looking and has gorgeous screen, but in the age of touch screens I would find it much easier to use if I could touch the screen rather than use the dial.
TBD, battery issue............
November 28, 2016
I've had this hooked up for roughly 10 weeks. The unit suddenly went offline and showed "low battery". I've had an open ticket with Nest for three days. They are investigating and confirming with engineering. The unit still works like a regular thermostat, once we disconnected it from the internet. Apparently there is an issue with the wifi card, causing the battery to drain and fail.I've been trying to get this resolved for 72 hours. Nest is now going to call me back tomorrow. I would like to give a better review and get this resolved. At this point I am unimpressed with this not being resolved since this is obviously an issue with the Nest unit.
Target v Actual Temperature
July 20, 2016
The Nest thermostat was a miss for me.This thermostat displays the target temperature of the room in big bold text. This is quite obnoxious when the heat is off. I live in a region of the country where AC is not a must, so during the summer months my furnace is off and just my fan is running. During these months, my thermostat serves as a thermometer to tell me when to open a window, turn on a fan, or turn on the portable AC. With the Nest thermostat, it merely reads 'OFF' if the unit is off and the fan is running. No temperature, just 'OFF.'I didn't realize how important it was for me to have the actual temperature of the room displayed on the thermostat. I read all the previous reviews on here complaining about the same, but thought nothing of it. A few of these reviews even have responses from Nest saying that it's what THEY thought was the most important number. Does it really matter what THEY thought if a large portion of your customers think otherwise?Nevertheless, I have returned the thermostat and replaced it with a Ecobee3 HomeKit enabled multi sensor thermostat. It's pretty sweet. In my opinion, it looks better, it works better, doesn't feel as cheap, most importantly it displays the correct temperature even when the heat is off. Also, Nest added a feature where you can change the equivalent of the 'screensaver' to read out the actual temperature, but this still doesn't work for those of us who don't always have the unit on.

Spend a Little More on a Better Thermostat
September 16, 2017
Very difficult to connect with Windows--actually I never did get it connected. The description does not say that you need a "C" wire--only when you open the installation manual does it mention that. The manual also doesn't say what a "C" wire is, or where to get one (you need a separate transformer), which means another wire in the wall. The customer service video was no help, nor was the call-in customer service. I ended up returning it and getting a more expensive, but more user-friendly brand.
C Wire is a must! Caution!
July 9, 2017
Well it looked good, felt good but you know what? I wouldn't recommend it in an older home. Why?THAT DARN C WIRE!!!Yes, they have instructions on how to bypass the C wire and make it work, but you give up manual control of the fan, and you have to make concessions that you don't have to make with some other brands. There's a difference between a thermostat that works well, versus a thermostat that you have to make work. Being that I would have to "make it work" versus simply wiring it in and being done, I chose to return this product and buy another.
Mostly wonderful but unusable, had to return
May 30, 2017
This is a tough item to rate. I loved the ease of installation. It was up and running within minutes. It connected to Alexa without issue. The interface is excellent. The Honeywell app is very usable. However, I had to return it. The temperature differential, otherwise known as the cycle rate, is +/- 0.5 degree. This thermostat was turning my compressor on and off within 5 minutes only to do so again within a minute or 2 when the temp went back up a half a degree. It probably cycled at least 10 or 12 times in an hour. That kind of constant on/off pulls a lot of power unnecessarily and causes additional wear and tear on the hvac system. Honeywell service center days that there is no way to change the differential and it is set that way to maintain as accurate a temp as possible. I returned this unit and purchased an Emerson SensiSmart. That unit allows the owner to set the cycle rate to slow, medium, or fast. I rated this one at 2 stars because in my opinion it is unusable, but I can see how other people might prefer this level of accuracy and, as I said at the beginning, I love everything else about it.
Ticks all the boxes, but serious quality issues
December 9, 2016
Minimally, the thermostat works. Several gripes will keep me from buy any more, however:1. I'm not sure the quality is there - In 3 years I've had 1 DOA, 1 quit working completely, and 1 quit working reliably.2. The Honeywell iOS app doesn't always work reliably.3. It's kind of dumb that a smart thermostat can't set its own time from the Internet.
Great thermostat, horrible service behind it
November 18, 2014
Great thermostat, horrible service behind it. This is about the application service to remotely control the unit. When it works, it works great, but it has a frequent down time, and the folks at Honeywell don't seem to fix things that happen on their servers after hours. Just last night/this morning, it was down for about 12 hours. The application would throw an error that it can't connect to the servers. Tried on multiple devices, networks, all the same. The thermostat is on the network (i can ping it). Then suddenly after 8am this morning, it starts working again normally. I will also get notifications that the thermostat is offline, but I can see it on my network. I wish there was a way to override the remote access and go local network access only. Fortunately, the thermostat just continues as it should connected or not and you can control it locally.
Constantly have to reprogram
August 24, 2014
The thermostat is fine as a wall thermostat, but the Wi-Fi remote connection is very unreliable. If the home Wi-fi drops even for a moment the thermostat needs to be reprogrammed and the remote connection will not work until it is set back up. The occasional convenience is not worth the aggravation of physically reprogramming the thermostat every week. Do yourself a favor and find something more reliable.

Definitely does NOT meet my needs.
June 25, 2017
What a disappointment. I finally realized the thermostat wasn't working for me because it was placed in my bedroom wing in the hall . . . second mistake (first was buying the hype). So, i learned how to program it manually. It still does not turn on at the set time unless I walk down the hall and stare at it so it realizes I am actually home at the time I programmed it to come on. When I retreat to my bedroom where it doesn't see me, it apparently reverts to its "she is not home" mode. I am sure from other reviews that this would perform well in a more active household, but for me it doesn't hold a candle to my two other thermostats which I have set to specific times and which go on and off as I have directed them. And, yes, it was set to manual programming before I did the manual setting.

Have set the temp to 65 for the AC to turn on.
June 20, 2016
My Nest is set to 73 deg, and the AC is not on. I had to buy another thermometer to get the actual temp of the house because there the nest doesn't give you the room temp. Mine says cool to 73, but it lies. Like I said, it is 85 inside and over 100 outside. I can drop the temp to 65 and the AC will turn on, but I really want the temp to be around 78. This thing is not learning a damn thing and it's pissing me off.

I am very disappointed with this product. I wanted a thermostat that could be controlled from my iPad. After downloading the app from Honeywell I am unable to control when my heat goes down at night and up in the morning.I would return this product except It is already installed and I would be out the installation costs.DO NOT BY THIS PRODUCT!

October 14, 2017
when i installed the thermostat it tried to set itself on fire. but the single star (should be no star) is for the dealer, not the thermostat. In late march of 2017 i bought the "good as new used" honeywell wifi, programmable thermostat (RTH6500WF), from EverythingDeals, The package it arrived in looked fine and the unit looked new.. I didn't remove the thermostat from its package because it needed the "C" wire attached and my furnace system didn't have one. I decided to wait running the C wire until this fall because there was little need for the thermostat as it was intended to replace a working older one.this month i got around to running a pair of wires to the thermostat location. (C and Rc). as per the instructions I attached the two furnace wires to R and W and the two new wires from a 24 volt transformer to C and Rc after removing the jumper between R and Rc. triple checked to be sure the four wires were in their proper placement in the wall plate. checked to be sure the voltages were correct. When i plugged in the thermostat to its wall plate the display did not light. in a moment i smelled hot electronics and immediately pulled the thermostat off the wall. part of the plastic housing was very hot and had started to bubble. And there was something rattling around inside that had not been rattling before. not sure what happened, but clearly this was not a good as new thermostat.in talking with honeywell's overseas support about getting it repaired i was very nicely told i had to deal with the seller (EverythingDeals) to get it repaired, replaced or returned. But of course EverythingDeals has a "we don't care what happens after thirty days" policy.the galling thing is i had previously installed a honeywell T5 wifi thermostat and had no trouble doing it, including running a pair of 24 volt C and Rc wires to it. the install was no more difficult for the rth6500wf than it had been for the t5. the wiring was the same. the places for the wires on both units were well labeled and labeled with the same letters.so - bought a second t5 from amazon. used the same wires in the identically labeled sockets (removing the jumper) installed it with no problems (no burning) and it works as advertised.perhaps i am wrong but it seems sensible to think the unit was never tested to see if it actually was good as new. buyer beware.

Dangerous--can cause system to go into uncontrolled overheating
April 29, 2017
They die and when they die, they can cause big problems. I had one randomly change the set up program and instead of cooling, ran the heat pump up to 95 degrees before I returned to the house and found it--the heating contractor figured out what happened (that happened 4/22/17). Another house on 4/27/17 (fifty miles away from the other failure) suddenly went to heat while the thermostat was set to cool. Even turning the thermostat to OFF didn't cure the problem so I had to turn the furnace off. I've owned five of these over the past four years and used them in three separate locations; four have failed.
