Awesome and so simple !
April 24, 2017
Don't want the preservatives and additives of store bought dehydrated fruits? Easy answer. We always seemed to have a bit of extra fruit between store trips. Thought we would give this a try. Much better that store bought fruit chips. Fresh. Machine puts out about the same noise as a medium sized air purifier. Basically white noise. You don't really notice it once it's been on. Doesn't have any controls whatsoever. Plug it in, set a timer alert on your phone and that's it :) Delicious !
This has been great so far

This has been great so far. It's a little bit larger and has more room than I expected, but it has been perfect for drying out some peppers I've been growing to eventually grind into powder!
Really a great product at a great price
May 12, 2016
Really a great product at a great price. I was buying jerky a couple of times a week because I am on a high protein diet. It was $7 for a small bag. I had a similar device years ago and just never replaced it after it died. This is an upgrade for sure. It stores in a very clever way to minimize the space it takes. I took it out of the box, put in some strips I had been marinading for a couple of days, and this morning had bags of great homemade jerky. It just paid for itself. My wife is on a special diet as well (she always is) and is going to make some fruit. I am looking forward to trying that as well.
Awesome Dehydrator for the Price!!! A++
December 12, 2015
I reviewed serveral food dehydrator's before I made my purchase and I am happy to say I made the right choice!! I chose this dehydrator over others due to its ability to store compactly and its aesthetics in regards to appearance (oh, and the cord winds up underneath). I will probably use this dehydrator less than ten times a year; primarily used to make jerky, with occasional fruit assortments. After researching this specific dehydrator with and without thermostat, I chose to save a few extra dollars (due to my usage stated above) and purchase the one without. From my findings, there was maybe 10-15 degrees difference between each model at its highest temp and for my use was not a concern (I urge you to make your own findings.). I made jerky in thin cut slices (by knife, so as thin as I could make them) and started the process a 9:30pm. By 6am the next morning, almost all the jerky was finished. I let a few pieces go a little longer due to their thickness, but was very impressed in the outcome. The noise from the fan is minimal, at least to me. Once you place the lid over the top, it probably cuts the noise in half. Our sleeping quarters are upstairs, and since I run the dehydrator at night, there is no issue.

Based on the description I have given above on how I use my dehydrator, I highly recommend to all that will have similar usage. It's a great little machine for the price. I purchased two extra trays just so I could receive free shipping, knowing I'd end up needing a couple more in order to cut the drying time down.

Hope you enjoy your new food dehydrator as much as I do! Good luck with your purchase!

Thanks,
No Complaints! Wonderful fresh fruits and meats...

Read previous reviews, and figured for $35, couldn't go wrong. This little machine makes *amazing* dried fruits and vegetables. I ordered the slick sheets and extra trays. The noise is not an issue...it's not hair dryer loud, but it's not ceiling fan quiet. It takes far less time to dry things than the manual shows.-Banana chips - about 4 hours.-Tomatoes - about 3 hours.-Pears/Apples - about 1 hour. We've used canned apricots, cherries and even pineapple. Everything came out great. We've used applesauce and canned fruits to make puree for roll-ups. We've used it to dry vegetables for easy instant soup stock. This product exceeded my expectations, and with all the accessories we purchased, was less expensive than some of the fancier dehydrators.Features:Base unit is easily cleaned, trays stack nested and clear sturdy lid fits on top.The trays are top rack safe and can be used immediately without to much cleaning for the same food. The cord stores in the unit. The noise is tolerable...place it away from your traffic area, we mostly run it at night, which is more than enough time to dehydrate anything. Some options I picked up:Roll Up Makers:National Presto Dehydro Electric Food Dehydrator Fruit Roll SheetsExtra Trays: Presto 06306 Dehydro Electric Food Dehydrator Dehydrating TraysAlso a great jerky gun and sausage grinder:Jerky Cannon/Sausage Stuffer: LEM Products Jerky CannonMeat Grinder: Norpro Meat Grinder, Mincer, and Pasta Maker

Love this dehydrator
December 18, 2016
This dehydrator has been fantastic. I work on an organic farm and, as with any business that sells food, there is a lot of waste. Between canning and dehydrating I've been able to save some of that waste for winter use. I've dehydrated apples, onions, carrots, peppers, eggplant, tomatoes, bananas, jerky, fresh herbs and a huge variety of other veggies. It's never taken more than 12 hours, even with a full load and over filled a little. It's easy to keep clean and doesn't seem to make any impact on our power bill. Overall, I'm very pleased with this purchase.
Get this machine!!! You want 9 trays or more!
May 30, 2016
LOVING this machine since we got it! SO much better than the smaller machines I've had in the past. The circulation is excellent, cleanup couldn't be easier (I put the black trays in the dishwasher). I can actually buy produce from Costco now without wasting anything! Pears, pineapple, mango, and apples have turned out the best. If you want to try something really delicious as a "candy"--I had a box of mandarin orange cups from Costco (you know, the kind with the peel top that you throw in a lunch box) and I opened a few and drained the fluid and placed them on the dehydrator just to see what those would turn out to be like--SO delicious! SO sweet! I bought some fresh mandarins and they were such a hassle to peel or slice for one tiny wedge of fruit--they didn't turn out nearly as good as those from the cups! Definitely more pricey, but we really weren't eating them fast enough, so I decided to get some use out of them. Yum! I've been using the greens from everything we buy that I would normally throw away (beet tops, leek tops etc) and dehydrating them and grinding them to a powder making my own "super food" mix and putting them in everything I cook (stews, soup, quiche, eggs etc) as well as my husband's daily "shake". Nothing is going to waste in this household! I need all 9 trays to make it worth my while! If I'm going to have to do as much chopping and prepping as it takes, I want to do it all in one sitting if I can. The smaller machines are much more of a chore because you can't fit much in them. This is amazing! What an upgrade! Worth every penny! :)

"Cadillac" of food dehydrators!
March 8, 2015
Excalibur, the "Cadillac" of food dehydrators! I love it. Dries efficiently and thoroughly with the rear fan and variable temperature dial. So much better than my old one-temperature blow-from-the-bottom-thru-the-plastic-trays version.
Great capacity
December 15, 2013
I got the Excalibur 9 Tray dehydrator to replace my old worn out round dehydrator. The old one just couldn't handle the volume of jerky family and friends demanded LOL So far I am very pleased! I mixed up a 5lb batch of ground deer mixed with NESCO Jerky Works Original seasoning mix. I could have easily put in 7-8lbs of ground deer in the Excalibur. I really like the removable trays and mesh. It should make for easy clean up.

August 3, 2017
Made "sundried" tomatoes. It worked! I look forward to many years of vegetable dehydrating in the future. I do wish it was just a touch smaller around, but I do like that the inside trays stack nicely to make it compact for storage. There is no temperature gauge, so you can only dehydrate at whatever the preset temp is (I want to say the manual said 165). Overall I am pleased with my purchase.
Does what it's supposed to do
May 8, 2017
I mainly got this dehydrator to make healthy snacks/treats for my dog. Nowadays, pet bakeries and pet stores sell natural/healthy treats, but they're not cheap. I figured I could do the same thing at home for a fraction of the cost. So far I've used this once (it does take about 7-9 hours at a time). I made sweet potato and apple chips. My Corgi really loved the sweet potato (apples, not so much as I prepped it with lemon juice beforehand so it ended up a bit tart. But that's okay, I made it for experimenting purposes anyway. I ate those myself). I would recommend this, especially for pet owners!
Nice dehydrator.
May 4, 2017
I really like this dehydrator. We have only used it once so far for jerky but it turned out great. Used our other dehydrator too and this one outperformed by a long shot. Only issue is that my roommate mistakenly pushed the indicator light on the front thinking it was a power button and it fell right in the unit. Contacted the company and they were willing to fix if I sent the unit back but I opted not to as it isn't that big of a deal. You can tell when the unit is on. I like the overall look of it as well. As compact as it can be and has a nice sleek look to it. If you are looking for something to use on occasion this is the dehydrator for you. I can see how it would be just as good for constant use but I can't say that as I do not use it a lot.
Great little dehydrator... but get the timer.
December 10, 2016
I really love this dehydrator. We've dried berries and veggies from garden. The hubby has made some amazing venison jerky! I DO wish that I'd spent a little more time researching and got the one here on Amazon that is $20 more and has a timer... this one just plugs in and goes... unplug to stop. It does work and does a great job...but I'd recommend this same brand with the timer.
sturdy, and it performs well
November 16, 2016
We have only used our Presto Dehydro a short time, but find this simple, affordable dehydrator to be well designed, sturdy, and it performs well.

It does put off some heat into the room, but we have it in an enclosed porch, so that is not a big problem.

We are still learning about dehydrating, and looking for more things to try in our new machine.

So far we've dried apples and some frozen peas and carrots. The dried peas and carrots, make an excellent, healthy snack to throw in a baggy and pop into my purse!

We bought some optional screens for fruit and small items, which made this possible.

Very good value.

Only 4 stars because of the heat emitted, and there is no 4 1/2 star option.

I would highly recommend this dehydrator!

I would have reviewed much sooner, but could not do so from my Android phone. Instructions on Amazon posts directed me to tap on selections not offered in the phone app format.

I am only able to do so now because Amazon sent me an email with a link to the review function with my purchase already loaded.

I really like this dehydrator
April 12, 2016
I really like this dehydrator, although dehydrating fruits and vegetables is a lot more expensive than I thought it would be. So, I haven't been able to use it too much. Dee and I both agree that we are very excited to try the yogurt making mode because he makes homemade yogurt from time to time.9 Trays is definitely enough. I haven't filled up more than four so far. We decided to go with this size because we didn't want to buy a smaller one now and then upgrade later. It doesn't have the timer, but that is okay. You can purchase a cheap wall timer for it, if you don't plan on being home when it needs to be turned off.I am really looking forward to trying out new and healthy foods with my Excalibur!
Mixed thoughts
November 27, 2014
So far so good. Dries well. Bulkier than I expected. The noise doesn't bother me. Will keep, but I am not sure it is all that superior to the American Harvester I replaced, which was cheaper. I am hoping it lasts longer. The trays on the Harvester cracked on me...maybe I should not have sent them through the dishwasher...and the heating element gave up the ghost.
Nice so far
February 12, 2014
Naturally, the first thing we made with this was jerky. Their manual says 4-6 hours, but it took over 8 hours to get our jerky dry enough. Happy to have, though. Didn't realize how huge it was until it came in. Could have gone for one of the smaller ones. You could easily put 15lbs of jerky in this thing at a time.
Awesome dehydrator!
January 12, 2011
I have never owned a dehydrator previous to this one, however, I really like it!The dehydrator does a great job, it can fit a lot of food too! So far, I have made beef jerky, dried fruit and veggies. Beef jerky is amazing!!It's not terribly loud or quiet - sounds like a large fan running which is what is happening - the fan is circulating the air to speed up the dehydration process.Only downside, is cleaning the trays :( a bit of a pain in the butt.Overall, very cool product and does an awesome job!

Bought this as a replacement for another unit that arrived broken. For my taste it is way too large, and it takes forever to dry chicken strips, my main purpose for buying it.

Funky lid
January 18, 2017
2 improvements needed, 1, the lid slides off which is annoying if you dry a lot like I do, 2 no on/off only plug in and it goes. Good enough for a cheap dryer but the lid thing needs to be improved
Loud
June 8, 2016
It works well, but it's very loud. As in, you don't want to be in the same room with it. After dehydrating sweet potato slices for our dogs, and listening to the constant fan and motor noise for about 8 hours, the slices were done and so were we. I am using my old Deni (which seems to have fallen off the face of the earth as far as being available again) for now until it dies, and then will use this one in the basement where we can't hear it. It works really well, but it's just annoyingly loud.
Good construction... two BIG flaws.
July 24, 2014
The construction and quality of the parts on this dehydrator are excellent. I think it is probably sturdy enough to last for several years and hundreds of uses. However, it does have two very big flaws... no timer and no ability to set the dehydrating temperature. After researching several websites on proper dehydrating techniques, I have discovered that temperature is very important. If set too high, the dehydrator could ruin some of your foods. This dehydrator has only one temperature. And since it does not have a timer to turn the apparatus off, you will have to monitor the dehydrator yourself.

I returned the one I purchased to Amazon after discovering this flaw and am upgrading to Presto model 06301... it has both a timer and a thermostat ranging from 90F to 160F. The cost of 06301 is $23.00 more but well worth the extra dollars spent.

If money is a factor, your personal time (to monitor the dehydrator) does not matter, and making jerky is your only interest, then this might work for you. However, if you want to dry beer hops cones and other herbs as I do, you need something with a temperature setting around 95F.

So plastic! Everything is plastic! My previous one was so sturdy and all metal. I suppose it does its job though.
Dehydrator quality
April 30, 2016
The product seems okay however the sides are designed so flimsy that they bow out to where the shelves could possibly fall if pushed to one side or the other. If you can deal with that it seems to be a decent unit.
I love my new toy
October 25, 2015
I love my new toy! I am making the most amazing paprika, one teaspoon of ground dehydrated paprika pepper and your food will taste better than your favourite restaurant. Also all my herbs look so green and they are so flavourful. The only negative side was that I didn't look carefully with the currency when I bought it and since I am in Canada my credit card got charged US dollars which made my toy extremely expensive, almost double the price.

October 26, 2014
The reason I bought this was was to make jerky out of deer meat. I decided to buy 5 pounds of ground beef and do a trial run with it. DO NOT USE BEEF in this thing. You will never get all of the grease out of it. I have run the trays AND screens through the dishwasher twice now. They are still slippery with grease. I am now running three at a time through the dish wash, hoping the grease will come off this time and not just wash onto the screens and racks. I have wiped grease out of the inside of the dehydrator several times, using dawn dish liquid. I'm working on it again today, trying to get this grease out. It was about 1/8 of an inch deep in the bottom of it when it was done dehydrating the hamburger. It ran down the front and is even on the bottom of it. I know, what did I expect to happen when dehydrating beef. It was lean beef, but still is real mess. I guess it is not the fault of the dehydrator. I'm mainly warning you about this just to let you know what to expect when doing beef. Think about frying 5 pounds of burger, and then think about all of this grease you'd have in your frying pan. Now, imagine all of this grease inside of this dehydrator, all over the front of the door, under it, and all over the trays and screens. The instructions say just wipe the screens off and not to put them in the dishwasher. If you don't run them through the dishwasher at least 3 times, they will not get degreased. I hope the third time through the dishwasher works this time. I ran the sausage shooter through the dishwasher once and it came out squeekyy clean. It's like these trays and screens and the inside of the dehydrator has a surface that won't let the grease come off. I hope that I don't have this mess when I finally dehydrate some venison. This so frustrating. I gave it three stars because of the level of difficulty in getting this thing clean. It performs it's job just fine. But just try and clean it. You are in for a real job.
Overall, good design.
May 1, 2014
Good overall function and simple design but could be better. The thermostat is flimsy and inaccurate so, I replaced it with a digital P.i.D. for $12 and works great. Save $50 by getting the one without the cheap timer and buy a $5 mechanical wall timer. Plastic, just sucks, so I'm making the whole thing out of redwood with stainless mesh screens. Overall, it's a really good design. Had I known how simple a design I would have made one from scratch.

Haven't even owned this for a year and its done. Overheats - extremely hot right away you can't even touch the lid without a hot pad! I am so disappointed...Even with the heat issue, its not dehydrating anymore.
Before you buy.....
August 27, 2016
I would probably have given this dehydrator 4 stars except for two peripheral, but for me very significant issues.First, enclosed with the product came a warning legislated by the state of CA: "This product contains a chemical known to the State of California to cause cancer and birth defects or other reproductive harm." Might not have purchased this if I had known that. Might also be some insignificant part internal to the motor. Don't know. Hopefully the food trays and circulating air are safe. I'm not obsessive about this stuff. I grew up drinking out of garden hoses. But why take unnecessary chances?Second: I knew 4 trays would not be enough, but since it is expandable to 8 trays, I assumed that I could buy more if I liked the product. As of today, 8-27-16, the original dehydrator costs $40. An additional two trays is $25!!!! or $50 to achieve the max of 8 trays. Another $6 for the screen (2 count) to dehydrate small items like corn or peas, and $6 more if you want the mesh (also only 2) to make fruit rolls. This thing runs for hours and hours, for some dense foods more than a day, rated at 600 Watts. 4 trays of zucchini chips (touching. If I followed the directions so that they were not touching, I would have had even less) produced ONE pint size mason jar of chips. 8 trays would have given an almost acceptable yield, but I'm not sure I am willing to invest an additional $62 to get the parts I need. I wish I had spent a little more and gotten what I needed. Maybe even an adjustable thermostat. Also, while the trays do nest nicely, this is anything but "compact" to store. Nested, it is 15" in diameter and 7.5" high. Too big to store in my pretty good sized microwave.

December 31, 2014
I had had no experience with drying food before buying this dehydrator. It delivers what it promises - warm air fanned upwards through trays of drying things. But if you are considering buying one for yourself, borrow someone else's to try it out first. Carrots turn into little rocks. bananas into grotesque leathery blobs; peaches into inedible rubbery shapes. One practical problem is that it is huge and takes up more counter space than you might think.
Damaged lid
July 10, 2014
I want to love this dehydrator, however I just received a second cracked lid. Upon unpacking I noticed the lid was cracked. The manufacturer was very pleasant to deal with and quickly shipped another lid. I just opened the package for the replacement and there's a huge crack. So disappointed. Clearly this is a packing/shipping issue. The product seems great, I used it once on strawberries. (Even with a cracked lid they dried) Hopefully I can get another functioning lid.
Not Impressed
March 2, 2014
With no temperature control, items are not consistent from one batch to another. Also, air circulation leads to different layers drying at different levels resulting in non-uniformity. All in all, dried fruits have either the consistency of rubber or wood chips. Having to check every half hour and rotating trays just isn't worth the time and effort -- store bought may be more expensive, but at least you are relatively sure of the product consistency.

February 24, 2014
Not worth the $$...in my opinion. For the price the unit is cheap, is hard to move or handle w/o the drawers slipping out, and ugly...Not that I expect beauty in a dehydrator, but for around 200$, it seems to me the price point should be about 50-60% of what it currently is...

40 + hours and basil still not dry
September 18, 2013
I bought this dehydrator because of the high reviews. I read through every inch of the instruction manual...I read up on dehydrating online. This thing came in the mail and I was so excited. I rinsed and picked off my basil leaves. Dried them. Laid them in a single layer on the racks. I didn't have a whole lot of basil, so I really only needed to use two racks. I spaced on empty rack in between the two larger ones. I checked it in 4 hours...still moist. Checked it in 8, still moist, so at this point I cranked it up to about 105 degrees from 95. Hours went by and still the same thing, so I decided I would get a thermometer and check and see if the heat was accurate. It was. It was reading 107 degrees. So then I got the humidistat from my daughter's bedroom. The humidity in my house is 58. If a humidity of my house at 58 is too high for the basil to dry then obviously it is not going to work any season of the year except the winter when humidity is at 15. I live in Northern KY, so it is not like I live in a tropical area. The amount of electricity used to dry the basil has to be WAY more than buying actual dried basil would cost. My next project was going to be apples and grapes, but not anymore. I can't imagine how long it would take to dry them! This is going back to Amazon. Oh, and before I forget, I emailed Excalibur and they never responded. I would not recommend this dehydrator.
