Well Made. Lasts A Long Time.
February 9, 2017
Honeywell 17000-S QuietCare True HEPA Air Purifier, 200 sq. ft., by Honeywell.Years ago, I had bought an earlier model of this medium sized air purifier at Home Depot. After many years, when the internal motor finally wore out and stopped turning the fan, I found out that Home Depot no longer sold this item, just a much bigger, heavier, and more expensive Honeywell model, -so I had to look elsewhere. Luckily, the problem was solved by a search on Amazon. The newer medium sized model is a little different in the outward appearance, but it has been doing the job quite well since June of 2016. I use it to filter pollen, dust, mold, and smoke from the air, and to provide some white noise to help mask distracting outdoor and indoor noises. The package description says that the inner folded HEPA filter can be vacuumed and should last 3 to 5 years, but my experience with Central A/C HEPA filters, and talking with A/C professionals, convinced me that that was not a good idea. A vacuum cleaner can remove the easy to see surface dust, but cannot remove the smaller particles of pollen, smoke, etc. that will eventually clog the HEPA filter and put a strain on the motor, causing it to wear out. The HEPA filter should be replaced when it becomes dark. The package description says to replace the carbon pre-filter every three months. I usually just vacuum the heavy dust coating on the outer black wrap-around pre-filter, and rinse it out under a faucet, before pressing it with paper towels to dry, and then reinstalling it. Since this simple, and relatively open black filter doesn't really remove any fumes and smells, I don't think that I am hurting it too much when some of the lightly applied carbon washes off. This is not a very dense carbon filter to begin with, so I don't know why they even bother with the carbon coating. This is an air filter, not a water filter. The carbon coating is probably just a marketing gimmick. Five Amazon stars for this Honeywell 17000-S HEPA Air Purifier.Ships from and sold by Amazon.com.Made by: Kaz USA Inc., 250 Turnpike Road, Southborough, MA 01772; © 2014 All Rights Reserved; Model 17000-S, 120V A.C., 60Hz., 0.75A T.P.; P/N: N. 0296-A; UL LISTED 3F49; phone: 1.800.477.0457; web: kaz.com; Honeywell info: HoneywellCleanAir.com; pre-filter purchases: replacementfilters.com; single item UPC Code: 0 90271 17000 7; EPA Est. The bane of wood stoves everywhere...
December 7, 2016
Burning eyes, stuffy nose, headaches... oh, the joys of owning a wood stove, right? This is the second year I've used the wood stove and boy howdy, I surely was not looking forward to the ever present smell of smoke all through my house. Not knowing whether an air purifier would be an effective solution, I decided to start out with a small unit for my bedroom. I've only been running it a few nights now, but HOLY COW THE DIFFERENCE THIS THING MAKES IS INCREDIBLE.This is how my experience has worked out so far: Get package, open package, set up purifier. It took longer for me to get it unwrapped and out of the box than it did for me to get it powered up. Plug in, stand there for a few minutes as the smell of smoke vanished from my bedroom. (Incidentally, it also seems to be cleaning the air of my scented wax tart aromas, but I can cope with that!)Things I have noticed so far: Sore throat gone, eyes no longer burning, I feel like my sinuses are... more open? It's beyond not being stuffy, but I feel like I am breathing better than I was even before the stove got started up again. So there it is. I wasn't sure if an air purifier would make much of a difference, but it makes all the difference in the world!
Quality purifier, recommended by allergy doctor
February 27, 2016
First purchased one of these almost 10 years ago as it was recommended by our allergy doctor. It has run almost 24/7 for 10 years and still works just as well as day one. Have replaced all filters once but otherwise you just vacuum them clean. Also makes a great white noise machine. We are so impressed with it that we just purchased another one for our baby's room. Highly recommend.
Perfect in every way for my household
December 21, 2015
I researched many, many air purifiers. Most of the reviews pointed in the direction of Hepa type and not ionizers. In my opinion the air purifiers with that feature and the feature of clearing germs made no sense as most people turned these off.My research showed the one with the extra option of germ elimination wouldn't work in a home setting like those used at Hospitals where used keeping that kind of contamination at bay. This is working purifying my bedrooms. The noise factor is miminum but not silent as it is working after all. It's easy to move, easy to get to the filter. After thorough dusting surfaces and room the cough factor and breathing is improved.I plan on purchasing another.
Very pleased with our Honeywell Air Purifier With Pure HEPA filter
June 23, 2015
We are so glad we bought Honeywell's Air Purifier. We had been looking for a purifier for sometime when we come across this one on Amazon. It has 3 different levels, low medium and high which gives you the choice of how you want to run it. Low is very quiet and medium just a notch above that. High, to us, has a louder noise to it, but no more than a fan would make. When you buy a purifier Always read the comments. I'm so glad I did because I learned a lot from one fellow in particular. If I hadn't learned that you should make sure that your HEPA filter says 'pure' or 'true' we would've ended up with a cheaper one that wouldn't work as well as this one does. This one also has a charcoal filter that wraps around the hepa filter that is supposed to help with odors, which our family isn't concerned too much with that. We bought this purifier because we have a 12 year old pomeranian that has a cough from collapsed trachea and its very important for him to have cleaner air in the home as dust and bacteria make his cough worse. We can tell a MAJOR difference with our little guy as he hardly coughs at all now. (of course we vacuum frequently also) And both me and my wife have such a time with sinus problems and we can tell a MAJOR difference in that department too. My wife always had streaks of blood when she would blow her nose and that is completely gone now. So we see a great difference since we got the purifier. When the charcoal filter and/or the hepa filter need cleaning a little light will come on to let you know. And then you just vacuum it clean. In the comments I learned also the hepa filter can last up to 5 years before you need a new one. The charcoal filter doesn't last that long-I think a year for that one. But you don't need that one unless you are concerned with odors. But I do think it also helps to keep the hepa filter a little cleaner tho. We are very, very happy with our Honeywell Purifier and would recommend this to all.
Best Thing I Have Done
March 3, 2015
All I can say is WOW!! This thing works! We have had it for 6 weeks, and just changed the wrap filter. It is a black blanket-style filter that goes around the car-looking filter (see the photos). All that stuff was going into our lungs from our master bedroom. I have asthma. I clean. We took out all the carpet in the house and put in tile. We don't even have throw rungs or area rugs. I dust and mop weekly. We noticed the room was easier to breath in the first day. We liked the white noise it makes to sleep with. When we still didn't know just how well it would work, but we felt better, we decided to order on a month until the entire house was as nice to be in as our bedroom. Now we know. All I can say is, "holy crap!"I also ordered more of the blanket filters. After reading the reviews I ordered a non-name brand. It really does look and feel like the one that come in the machine. I will order those again as needed.I knew I really liked these air cleaners, but I had no idea until today how much. I will be buying more of them.

A good air purfier/white noise machine.
July 24, 2017
This is the second one I have bought so there is the best review for this air purifier from me. On high it is noisy and I like that when I sleep, a definite white noise I personally find soothing. On low it is reasonably quiet for the work it is doing. The lights are a bright blue in a dark bedroom so I just used some black electrical tape to cover them up. I like to change the pre-filters often so I found a website that sells generic versions that are just as good and lots less expensive than the name brand. Since I love the noise on high at night and used black tape to cover the lights, there are no drawbacks for me using this. It works well, the air smells cleaner, I have used my first one almost constantly for almost a year, I think. All good.
The white noise is very calming and the unit does an amazing job at removing dust from the air
February 1, 2017
I keep this unit sitting in my living room area in a corner on top of a piece of rustic furniture. The white noise is very calming and the unit does an amazing job at removing dust from the air. I ordered several charcoal filter back-ups and switch them out every few weeks to keep the Hepa Filter from getting dirty. Winter time this runs 24 hours a day non-stop. I would highly recommend this purchase.
Going strong after 3 years!
June 14, 2016
We have had this running day and night for 3 years and it is in great condition. There are no strange rattling noises or clogs like you see in some other air purifiers. It provides a nice ambient noise and it not too loud (on the lowest setting). We have noticed a significant decrease in our allergies and in the dust in our home.Replacing the prefilters every 3 months is a breeze - you just unscrew the bottom, unwrap the old one and wrap the new one onto the HEPA filter. (We do it outside to reduce dust in our home).Great product!
Best air filter I have found.
May 22, 2016
My wife and I have allergies and needed something with more air cleaning capacity than one of those little units you can stick on your desk. ThisMachine is powerful and moves a great deal of air. If I crank it up to full power it is really quite loud. It does make a big difference in the amount of dust that we see accumulating on surfaces like table. More important it really does help with the allergies. We bought a second filter of this type about a month ago,
Love this model of Honeywell Air Purifier
October 4, 2015
This was a replacement for an older model of Honeywell and I like this one a lot! Really does the job good of cleaning the air of pollutants and bird dander (I have a Cockatoo that are known for their very fine dander). It is very easy to clean and I'm able to use the vacuum cleaner to vacuum the filters. I'm very satisfied with this unit.
Don't Hesitate, Outstanding Results
February 22, 2015
Very satisfied with this air purifier for my living room and dining room areas. Living in a vintage home I lease I have no control over how dirty the heating duct system is. I change the HVAC system filter once a month but the air just did not seem clean and the visible dust accumulation o tables etc. was heavy. My nose was always stuffy also. This is a fairly large unit, however it is very efficient, I physically feel better with more energy and my stuffy nose issue is gone. I run this when I am home. Dust accumulation is reduced. I have a tower "hepa type" unit in my bedroom that I will be replacing with the smaller version of this unit. I now see there is a big difference between "hepa type" and a pure, true Hepa air purifier as this one is.. Also, last year we had a fire nearby and the visibility outside was less than a city block so you can imagine what the inside air quality was like. In that we seem to no longer have winters or rain in California unfortunately I think this air purifier will be pressed into service again to clean smoke from the interior of my house. I could not be more pleased with this unit

Effective
January 6, 2017
Not sure about the quietness of it but the effectiveness is without question. The air in Kabul is terrible and I use this in my room. It's keeps the air clean. I don't wake up sneezing and coughing in the middle of the night and with a prefilter change it helps with the smell as well. Only reason it didn't get 5 stars is because it's not that quiet
Assembly took a little effort
December 4, 2016
Initially, we thought ours was defective. It produced a terrible noise and vibrated a bit. It was the way the filter was installed. First, the directions warn you not to tighten the cover too much. Well, ours needed to be tightened more. Second, the filter needed to be wrapped around more carefully. It's just a rectangular piece (that BTW sheds a lot) that you wrap around a cylinder and secure with two loose Velcro tabs. Third, the cylinder with the filter needs to be placed just so into the side of the filter. After these fixes, the machine was fine. I'd expect installation to be able to tolerate more variance, but it works. As a side note, I agree with the reviewer who not odd the machine got louder after a few days. However, it's still an ok volume.
Works very well....

I really like this air filter. I have a germ guardian, but I like this much better. When I turned this on I immediately smelled fresh air It has a large filter and draws in air from the front and back of the unit, so its moving a pretty good amount of air. As far as noise level,to me it is pretty loud but on medium and low it is bearable, but I don't think I could recommend this if your sensitive to noise. It is a little bulky looking compared to the more sleek looking tower styles (which I have) but this works better, maybe because it pulls in more air and the filter is bigger. So, I recommend this if you don't mind a little noise. Also I chose this because this does NOT have an ionizer or UV which some say is bad for your health.
Even thought it is light enough to move easily, which she was doing
June 6, 2015
I purchased one to see if it would help my wife with her breathing problems. She said that it seemed to work for her and I noticed that she was not coughing as much as she was before I purchased the unit. Even thought it is light enough to move easily, which she was doing, I purchased another so she would not have to move it from her home office to the bedroom. Since the first of January of 2015 I have purchased 3 units and they are all being used. It is a bit noisy for me, but my wife said it doesn't bother her. I'm not a big handy man type, but I found it easy to put together and had it running in less than 10 minutes. If I was handy, it would have only taken 5. :) I feel that it was money well spent. I hope this is helpful. Paul sends
It's actually pretty quiet on the lowest setting and doesn't bother me ...
July 16, 2014
I've been using it for some time in Singapore (240V) with a step down transformer. I've heard horrors of such setups, but nothing has happened so far. My room faces a 3 lane main road, so it does get a lot of pollution from the street. I haven't felt the effects of using this air purifier. But maybe that's only because there's simply too much dust around in the first place. What I can say is that I've had other mini purifiers and the filter gets horridly grey after about a week. We'll see when I have to clean this filter out just how much dust it has removed from my lungs. It's actually pretty quiet on the lowest setting and doesn't bother me at all. When I'm really tired, I can even sleep with it on the highest setting, but I'm also a very deep sleeper. I'm giving it 4 stars because it's a little bigger than what I expected.Update: For whatever reason, the purifier has stopped working. I've been using it with a step down transformer, which I use with a fan and vacuum as well and both are still going fine. I literally came home one day, tried to turn it on, and the motor just completely did not respond. Strange. I wrote to Honeywell who said that they do not cover products used with a transformer since it was not designed to be used that way. I mean, fine, but I still believe that the transformer has done its job and it was the air purifier that blew. It could have been handled better. That said, I must say the purifier does an extremely good job. After maybe a month, the prefilter was stacked with pet fur (I have a Jack Russel) that I had to change it. My room also felt a lot less dusty and any odours (e.g. farts) seemed to dissipate much faster.
Can't sleep well without it
December 19, 2013
This air purifier works very well, and overall I am pleased with it.Noise - 8/10Its not very loud. You can hear it in the background, and as long as its not on the highest setting, it settles in as background noise. I think that it actually helps put our infant to sleep, and helps keep her from startling when small amounts of other noise are in the room. We don't have to play the TV very loud to hear it over the filter, which is helpful again if the baby is sleeping. Its not perfectly quiet, but it does push a lot of air though itself, so it's reasonable that it would make some noise doing so.Functionality - 10/10It cleans out smells and allergens really well. I have a stinky dog who sleeps under the bed. When I don't run the purifier, his hair keeps me up at night due to a congested nose and his smell is noticeable. When I run the filter, I can sleep and the smell is extremely diminished. It has a charcoal first stage filter and a hepa secondary filter, so I think thats how it can get both the smells and the allergens.Value & Maintenance / Operating Costs - 8/10This filter came in at $110 when I bought it. That's not a tiny amount of money. I think that if you need a functional small room filter, its worth the value.I run a pool filter a lot, so my power bill is off the charts already. When I dont run the pool filter and still run the air purifier, my power bill is a little under average. Its looking at it in an aggregate way, and I've never tested the actual draw, but I think its not too bad.The charcoal filter should be replaced often, especially if you have a hairy dog (more than the once per 3-4 months that I crack mine open). Every time I open the machine to change the charcoal pre-filter I am totally grossed out by the thick layer of dead skin cells, fuzz, and dog hair in the thing. That's good though, because its doing its job. They are available at walmart, and although the job of cleaning them is messy - you get a herd of dust bunnies and charcoal all over yourself and the area you are working in - they are fairly inexpensive. The hepa filter is not cheap. I don't replace mine very often though.Other - 7/10The newer model has this blue LED that professes, "Hey, I'm on!!!" It is way too bright. If you have it in a living room, and it runs at night, great, instant night light. If you have it in your bedroom, and you're touchy about light, then its a problem. We taped a blackout patch over the light so its not bothersome. If its on, we can hear it, so the light is sort of superfluous.Overall - 8.5 / 10I bought a second one recently because I like the way they work, and both myself and my wife are sensitive to allergens. I am familiar with a few different types of filters, and this one just really seems to do the trick for me.

Solid Filter - Will probably buy 2
August 11, 2017
I subtracted 1 star for two issues that need to be addressed by the company.1) removal of the ridiculous blue LED light - it will kill your sleep patterns until you disassemble the machine and remove it from the circuit board2) the lack of sanitation by way of a UV-C bulb that would not produce ozone. This product only mechanically filters - which is nice. But it would be nicer if it included a couple technologies from the last 10+ years. This device would be a home run if it had a UV-C bulb operating above 240nm (preferably 253.7nm) to purify (kill germs) the air in addition to cleaning it (removing particles), all without creating ozone. Sadly Honeywell was a bit cheap here. A ridiculous benefit would be an ozone generator on a 4 to 10-minute timer per 24 hour period to keep the ppm down.Definitely looking at mid 40dB to 60dB which is a little louder than smaller room models. Wouldn't trade this one for the world though. I also have owned the Honeywell 17000s since 2008 which is probably 5-10dB quieter, but maybe only does 1/3 to 1/2 as much air. The Honeywell 17000s I can tolerate on loud in the next room over or medium in the room I occupy. This 50250 I have to run on low or medium. High is just too loud unless vacuuming/etc.This 50250 filters way way way way more air than the 17000s though. It's not even close. I used the 17000s in college for a dorm room and it was great. But for a 1300sq. ft apartment with 2 bedrooms the 17000s cannot do the living room very well. This 50250 combined with the 17000s in the living room bring me back to feeling how the 17000s felt in a bedroom. I'll eventually get 2x 50250's in the living room and put the 17000s in the bedroom to hold me over until I replace the HVAC and add the parts that any decent home should've had during the building process.I still think the blue lights on the machine are BS and I will probably disassemble at some point and remove them from the circuit board. Things need to stop coming with lights and beepers.Additionally, I kind of wish CFM was readily listed. CADR & sq. ft are both the wrong units to measure volume and air changes (which you want 2 to 9 per hour) depending on what you're doing or how bad your asthma is. I guess companies use these measurments to seem more "relatable" to consumers, but it really just feels like a cover up.The best answers on every air filter would be:CFM, dB, filter % by micron size, filter cost, replacement interval, yearly watt usage---> all listed by in a chart by speed setting (low, med, high).Companies just don't want you to know if they're really the best or not. Such a shame it's left up to red boxes, bold text, and random marketing/lobbying.*note* I did have to disassemble the 17000s after 2-3 years of running it because the motor was making bearing noise. I greased it with Pennzoil and it ran fine for 5 years then I did it again with some Amsoil nlgi #2 and haven't' had any issues since.
Very pleased. Will be buying a 2nd one.

Researched a lot before purchase. Decision came after talking with cousin who's son suffers from Cystic Fibrosis. Very serious Lung/stomach disorder. They live in A.Z. I knew she did her homework as well and her son, now 16, is thriving! I recently moved and have been sick with sinusitis and sore throat, stuffy nose from the get go. I believe it comes from carpet but I'm a renter so it won't be getting changed. Even the Cat is sneezing. I notice people claim immediate relief. I get that as the fresh air that comes out, as for now, I live in N.Y., is nice and cool. I believe that soothed the very irritated sinuses. Thus, fast relief. I've had it for a few weeks now and the difference is great. I run it 24/7. I live in a 1BR condo with large LR, DR, Kitchen, BR and entrance way. I keep it in Living room during the day and BR at night. I am waking up, finally, not extremely sick. I noticed when I put it in BR and fell asleep on the couch in LR I woke to a stuffy nose after about 2 hours. As soon as I got in the BR it began to clear. I would give it 5 stars except the noise does drive me a little crazy. I'm sound sleeper so doesn't bother me at night. However, in LR when watching TV it's annoying. But~ I guess it has to be that way to push the air so it is what it is! The price was right and soon I plan on buying the smaller one to keep in BR permanently instead of moving from room to room. However, it's not hard to pick up and move. Has handle to make it easy and I'm not so strong. Also read comments about the fan going off a bit and making noise. Some video showed how to fix it. I heard the sound, but it went away and all seems good for now. Should the issue occur it looks easy enough to fix. Best wishes in your breathing and hope my review has helped!
Allergy Sufferers, help is here!!
October 10, 2016
Love this filter! There is a sense of more cleaner and crisper air. I am a severe allergy sufferer so I am willing to try anything/everything to make my home environment better. Ever since I brought this I don't wake up as stuffed up. I also like the fact that it has 360 degrees vents. The only thing that stopped me from giving it a 5 star is that it is super noisy when on its highest setting, definetely can't sleep with it, on its lowest setting its good, it kind of sound like a quiet ac unit.
Excellent product
June 29, 2016
Three months of non-stop operation and it is working really well. The purifier has noticeably helped my asthma, and the scent of 3 dogs has diminished as well. The top speed is loud and so I rarely use it at that setting which is a bit of a drawback when trying to clean the air. The middle setting is left on at night and when we are out, as it is also a bit loud. The lowest setting is quiet, and does not interfere with conversation, TV or radio listening. The directions indicated it might stain carpet if left, so I have had it sitting on a low table. I haven't seen any residue from its use.
Bigger than expected but it works good
February 11, 2016
I got this with Amazon warehouse deals for only $89! It said it was "used" because it was repackaged and there was less than 5% damage to the top of the unit. I got it and there was NO damage at all and it was NOT previously used. I saw a black scuff which was probably the 5% issues that's why it was marked down, but that rubbed right off with my finger. The high setting is pretty loud but the medium and low settings aren't so bad. I slept with the low setting on last night and didn't even notice the white fan noise. I have been sick with a stuffy nose but my husband said he woke up this morning and was breathing clearly. I have dogs and cats as well. They don't bother me so much but come this spring I hope this helps with pollen and what not. I always get miserable for at least a month. We will see. I live off a dirt road as well so everything is always dusty in my house which. I hope this helps with that! I would recommend this hepa unit. I gave it 4 stars only because I am not noticing anything yet because I am sick. Physically it feels like the air is cleaner. I plan to get another one once I move.
The 52500 is still running great, but I moved it into the upstairs area ...
August 27, 2015
I ordered this unit as a replacement to the Honeywell 52500. The 52500 is still running great, but I moved it into the upstairs area of my home and got the new one (50250) to take it's place downstairs. The 50250 is basically the exact same unit as the older 52500 with minor cosmetic differences. The controls are a bit different as the new one has a blue led light and two filter change reminder indicators and reset buttons. The only other big difference is the older model came with casters (wheels) on the bottom. The new unit does not come with the casters. This is why I knocked off 1 star. The unit is large and bulky and is much easier to move around on wheels. The new unit needs to be picked up and moved. I have a bad back, so this to me is significant. The unit is not very heavy at all, it's just bulky and kind of hard for me to move around without the wheels. Also, the new unit is made in Mexico whereas the older unit was made in the USA. The new unit seems to be a bit quieter during low speed operation and about the same volume at full blast. So far, after running it for one day, it seems like it's doing just as good of a job cleaning the air as the old model. This is a great unit new and old and will dramatically improve your indoor air quality.

Not quiet anymore

We were happy with this product until yesterday when all of a sudden it was no longer quiet. Now we have to pay shipping and handling to send it to TN so it can be repaired!?
I'm not really convinced this product makes a difference. ...
February 14, 2016
I'm not really convinced this product makes a difference. I ran it on high in my living room for 2 days and didn't really notive a difference. I'm going to use this product more often and will update this review if my opinion changes.
Good air filter despite some problems.
January 23, 2015
I bought this despite the reviews of it being noisy. I figured that was going to be a problem with any filter. When I pugged it in though, it was awful. It sounded like a playing card was stuck in the fan blades. I was go ing to send it back but decided that I would see if in fact there might be something in the blade chamber. Turned out, the manufacturing process ran the power cable through the wrong hole and it was rubbing against the fan blade. I fixed it and closed everything back up. I works just fine. It was an easy fix for me but most people might send it back because of this defect. If not for the bad wiring, I would give this four or five stars. It works great, and purifies the air joust great.
Nowhere close to a real HEPA in functionality
September 2, 2014
I find this HEPA fairly quiet, but I have to say as a longtime HEPA user who has had Honeywells with replaceable HEPA filters before, that this does not get the smells out of your environment the way classic HEPAs do. I use it in my daughter's room, and she has a new wool carpet that smells pretty woolly (for lack of a better term). This filter doesn't really get rid of any of the odor, unless I leave it on all the time, on high, with the door closed (this is in a medium-sized bedroom). With the other kind of HEPA (I had the tower models before), if there was a bad odor in a room I would just pop it on high and the odors seemed to be 'sucked' out of the room. With this one, it functions more for white noise and does decrease dust a little, but I wouldn't have much faith that it is taking chemicals or fumes out of the air, if it can't handle the smell of wool!
relatively quiet cleaning, but a short lifespan

Purchased two of these just shy of two years ago. One is still going strong collecting dust, but the other died about a week ago. Sad it didn't have a longer lifespan considering the price. I consistently cleaned the filter and device when the light would warn me. It now only slightly blows on high but not at all on other settings.
LEMONS DO HAPPEN !!!
January 24, 2011
I bought a Honeywell 17000 on July 30, 2009. I purchased it because I own another one and we love that one. This one came from a place called Warehouse Deals, Inc. and it was the last one they had available, as I recall. Anyway, it came in a taped up and damaged box, but the item inside seemed new, so we unpacked it and fired it up. It worked fine for a couple of months, then it started acting up by not working on the HIGH setting, at times. Then it completely died on January 20, 2011, so it lasted in total about six months.I want another one, because we really like this particular model due to our experience with the older one (18 years old) we bought and still use.It has a 5 year limited warranty, so I'll be out the shipping charge to their repair center, and I'll have to send in $10 so they can ship it back. If all goes well, I'll update this review.CONCLUSION: Don't judge the 17000 by this lemon I happened to get. I have one that works like the day we bought it over 18 years ago. I'm just hoping that Honeywell gets it back to me in tip-top shape so I can give a positive update later on.

Blow hard
February 10, 2017
This unit has great air flow which is important for proper air filtration. It seems to clean the air well. Unfortunately it is to noisy for a bedroom at over 55dB on low speed. The frequency is also a bit high which adds to the apparent noise level. This unit would be good in an office or other work area. Also the thing has a bright light on the knob that can't be blocked. Additionally it is blue which is worse for sleeping.
Loud and with a bright light you can't turn off
May 27, 2016
Be aware that this air purifier is loud, substantially louder than other air purifiers we've used, including others by Honeywell (even at lowest setting). At night, it's actually a good white noise machine if you don't mind a loud fan noise while sleeping, but this wouldn't be good in a setting where you need it quiet. Also, there is a surprisingly bright blue light that is impossible to turn off, so if you're planning to have this in your bedroom, be prepared to be annoyed by the light. We ended up covering the blue light with post-it notes and tape, which of course looks really janky.
Requires a lot of Maintenance. Expensive to use. Seems to work.
January 4, 2015
Requires a lot of Maintenance. To use this properly one needs to replace the other carbon filter every 3 months and vacuum the inner hepa filter. Only when you buy this does it come with an exact fitting outer filter. The replacement filters all needs to be cut to fit.. this is very messy and time consuming. The inner Hepa filter is not designed for replacement. If you read through the question section it seems that the Honeywell 50250 which is a different model than the Honeywell 50250-s have replacements.I don't want to spend $50 replacing the Hepa filter with one that fits the Honeywell 50250 and not the Honeywell 50250-s.I dont think that the exact manufacturer Hepa filter is sold for this unit. Once the filter is depleted which has been estimated at roughly 3 years, it wont do much good. The unit uses a lot of A/C and is expensive to run... I have heard it on full power eats 180 watts. This unit seems to work best at full power to rid the air of dust particles that one can see flying though a beam of light. It does seem to collect in the outer filter a lot of dust at the end of the 3 month cycle, so I assume it works as far as cleaning up the air or improving it to some extent. The air does smell and feels fresher especially when placing a new outer filter and vacuuming out the inner Hepa. Or when new. Some have complained about the noise. I haven't experience a problem personally with the noise. It is important the unit is completely standing on a flat surface. Any tilt and the unit will make a lot of noise.
I can't tell if it works after 6 months of use
October 6, 2014
I've waited a few months before reviewing this Air Purifier because even now, I'm not really sure if it does anything. I bought this in May (it's October now) because we moved into a new house and both our dogs started going crazy scratching and they were miserable. I was unsure if it was outside or inside conditions causing this distressing issue (poor things were scratching and biting themselves raw). Our new house has a lot of carpet that we will not be able to replace completely for a year or 2 due to the big expense to install hard wood floors, and outside we have a lot of trees, both pine and oak so it could be something to do with pollen. Either way, I was desperate to relieve their discomfort. I bought this and put it in our bedroom, hoping that if it is pollen or carpet issues, that they could find comfort when sleeping or hanging out in that room.I've had this running constantly since May and I have to say that I do not see any difference between our bedroom and the rest of the house. The purifier is LOUD! Not just fan loud, but even on low it's drown out the TV loud! I don't actually mind that at night because I like white noise and it keep the "girls" from barking every time a pine cone hits the roof of the house or a car drives by.But I will say this, I have not had to dust the bedroom any less than the rest of the house. Dust still appears on the lamp shades and the furniture, and the area around the device gets annoyingly dusty. I have this near a window with blinds and drapes and both the blind in that specific window and the drape need constant dusting. I don't know why. Also, I did not notice any difference in the way the dogs felt after using this. My partner has allergies and uses an inhaler, and he has not noticed any particular cleaner air in the bedroom either. So really, I just do not know if this is working. We can not see or feel any difference in air quality in our home, so I really can't recommend this item as a definite help to anyone. As far as the dogs, it appears that is was a seasonal allergy and by the end of June they had worked out of it. I don't know what next spring will bring, but I'm hoping that their systems have had time to get used to the new plants in the area and hope that we will not have the same issue again!
Good filter, WAY too noisy for the sf it is meant for
January 5, 2014
I've used this filter since November 29th, in the main room of my 1BR apartment. In a 400 sf (square foot) apartment, this unit is far too loud for comfort. I'm sure it works fine, and it definitely does it's job well, but it is constantly vibrating and makes a very loud humming noise, even on low. One of the other problems I have with it is that it only has three speed settings, it should have more so that people can use it more continuously. Due to the inferior technology of the motor and blades, I'm going to return it and get a Winix. I would only recommend this to someone who owned a house and was NOT planning on using it in or near a bedroom where someone sleeps, TV room, or any other sound-sensitive place; and the second condition of the requirement would be if the person also couldn't (or didn't want to) buy a more expensive unit, as this one is very cheap for it's rated air flow. If anyone is interested in finding a more quiet unit, I've been using a Holmes 756-U for a few years now, and it's been fantastic. Very quiet, 4-speeds, great air flow and filtration, and Holmes customer service is great. The first Holmes filter I had was the 726 unit, and when I kinda broke it while trying to open it up (impossible to do, I think..), I just sent Holmes an email and they right away offered me the 756-U as a free replacement. This was after 3 or so years of using the 726, which is a great warranty and customer service on their part. The only downside to the Holmes units are the cost of filters, which are overpriced.
Very loud
April 29, 2012
Let me start off by saying I won't repeat the tech specs as other reviewers have. This review is strictly from a user's point of view. I have 7 dogs. I have hayfever and asthma. I have central air in the house. That being said, I wanted something to put in our TV room/kitchen area as that's where we "all" are most of the time. I will update this later to let you know if this helped with dog dander, smells etc. Too soon to really tell. It's very loud on high speed. Medium is better, Low is ok -- you can still hear it. You need to place it 3 feet from a wall or furniture. Make sure you have enough room. Not the most attractive thing to have out, but if it reduces the nasty air, so be it.Set up was easy. It has a handle to carry it. Wish it came in another color, as it's very WHITE and sticks out like a sore thumb. Will update in a few weeks to attest to it purification capabilities.

Emits unpleasant odor
March 2, 2017
We've had this for less than a year for use in our bedroom. The filter has been cleaned regularly but now the unit emits an unpleasant smell, with or without the filter. Disappointing especially because it's Honeywell.
Definitely not the quietest air purifier on the market, ...
February 6, 2016
Definitely not the quietest air purifier on the market, but I find the noise output to be completely acceptable. I consistently run this while I sleep. After a year of satisfactory use, I sought to replace the main filter, only to find that they're impossible to find. Keep that in mind as I did not believe air filter availability would be an issue.
This thing works great when it is working
March 13, 2015
Got this on January 24th and I vacuumed the filter on March 13th. The light has been on to check filter for a week and a half or so.'Put it all back and plugged it in. Doesnt work! My first one just died after about a year after using it. Thought I would try it again after a couple of years. This thing works great when it is working, but I am not having much luck with these. Bought another one two weeks before and still going but I am wondering for how long. Not real happy.2 stars because it does work really good and is prettyquiet.
Information left out
June 6, 2014
I wouldn't call this unit "whisper-quiet," even on low. It is quite loud. Much louder than the box fan I keep in the same room, also on low. This actually would influence my purchasing decision if I had known the real amount of sound involved with this unit. And if I had known that all similar units are as loud, I would have bought a smaller one.Additionally I am annoyed because when I read the instruction manual it says more than once that you need to put the purifier 3 feet away from any large objects such as appliances or furniture. Essentially you need 9 sq ft to devote to this thing in the middle of a room. I never saw this anywhere on the product's description, and I had even read about this unit on a couple websites before I bought it. Again, I wouldn't have bought this had I known that it needed so much space.Other than these regrets I have with this purchase, it is quite a powerful fan, even when I leave it on low. However if I wanted a powerful fan I would have bought one. And it will never be very efficient because I don't have that much space to devote to this unit's required circulation area.Wish I hadn't bought it but I'm going to make do.
Multiple defective units, quality declining.
April 29, 2013
I have enjoyed years of service from a Honeywell 17000 unit that runs 24/7 in my bedroom. When it is on there is a quiet rush of air, kind of like a white noise generator.I ordered another recently and the motor was defective - it made a squealing, thudding sound while operating. I returned it and got another - this one made a slightly quieter squealing noise, but still sounded awful - when I went upstairs to check on my old one i could still hear it squealing from the other side of the house. While the price is a bit lower than it was years ago it appears that the quality has dropped substantially, order at your own risk.I ended up purchasing the new honeywell mini-tower from a local store in case I needed to return it - it's even quieter than my old 17000, we will see how it holds up.
Doesn't appear to work well and now it has quit working!
December 4, 2010
We bought this unit several months ago for our bedroom, hoping that it would improve the air quality. Several indicators of its effectiveness would be the amount of dust on the filter, reduction in nighttime congestion from allergies and a reduction in the dust that collects on our furniture. After several weeks of running it 24x7 we didn't notice any difference in our nighttime congestion or dust on furniture. The unit has some dust accumulating on the filters but apparently is so localized it doesn't matter. Creates a nice ambient noise for drowning out other noises! We quit using it as our regular filter and set it aside. I wanted to return it to Amazon, but the time limit had expired before I got around to doing it. Then we tried to use it at Thanksgiving as a noise generator for our sleeping grandson. No luck, it has stopped working. There were no sounds, lights or other indications that it was failing. Just stopped turning on. We are sending it back to the manufacturer (KAZ) for repairs, paying for shipping both ways after only several months of ownership.I would not repurchase!

Good filter with strong odor
August 27, 2017
Here's the problem.... I purchased the unit in March this year (2017) , it sat in the box for a couple of months before I opened the unit and placed it in my bedroom, which had a previous air filter which didn't do much and never seemed to get dirty (filter media). That was a leading brand that was described as an almost hepa filter, pretty unit nice design but didn't really do much. I have some allergies and noticed after running the filter I was sneezing a lot more than when I didn't run the unit. After about a half dozen uses the unit emits an intolerable odor that has some characteristic of solvent and almost a vinegar like cast. I've called kaz several times and they recommended shaking out and vacuuming the pre filter carbon which I did, that helped reduce the sneezing problem but the odor has become even stronger. They told me to open a window and place the unit without the prefilter for a day or so and run max to air out the filter itself. I noticed the plastic horizontal "ribs" around the unit have several areas of a yellowish "drip" on them almost like they were cracked and then glued together.... this was out of the box.... I'm certain the odor doesn't originate int the house or the room, nothing like it occurs except when running this filter... it is a mystery, I'm calling it contamination in the unit when I received it.
Authentic Body Only
April 8, 2015
Honeywell is actually great, mine came and was returned as it had a "replacement filter" in it so it was not NEW as sold. It even had written "replacement filter on the side of filter. The real filter has several layers and is true Hepa. The one that came with this you can hold up to light and see right through the one layer of cheap looking (fako) filter. This was maybe a refurbished model for sure the filter was not real as I have the authentic to compare.I tried ordering replacement filter and got a fake one. Then I ordered this entire "new" Honeywell to get past fake replacements out theret and the alleged "New" in box entire unit arrived and had a fake filter in it so ...go figure!
Works well I am guessing
December 22, 2014
It's very hard to tell if it is outperforming my homemade box fan filter. It definitely pushes more air around and I am hoping it filters out the fine particulates. It had trouble filtering out the smell of smoke from the kitchen/neighbors cigarettes. In combination with the home made filter the air felt really clean.I like it and i feel like it will work better in the long run because the homemade fan filter needs to be replaced every 2 months or so before it is black with junk. Allergies is the same reduction as with the home made filter. The blue LED sucks but is tolerable. It's really hard to write a review about a filter tho. It does what it is supposed to I am guessing. Maybe I should buy a air particulate measuring device...UPDATE:After a few months of using the filter I have decided that a box fan with a filterite filter works better then this device. The prefilter picks up dirt, the Main filter seems clean still. Setting up a new Box Fan Filter and that filter has turned grey because of the dust that this honeywell missed... We still have both running but I would not suggest buying this Honeywell filter and instead look into building a fan filter. Total costs are about the same over the year but the fan filter works better.
Too loud. Amazon Whirlpool Whispure is 104 CFM/dB vs 12 CFM/dB for this unit
June 22, 2014
As a scientist and engineer, I purchased this unit some time ago, and can't use it at night because it is too loud. I have purchased two other units, including the Whirlpool Whispure Air Purifier on Amazon. The link follows: (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00440EKRG/ref=oh_details_o06_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1)For the details, see my review on the Whirlpool unit. The Whirlpool unit on low has a 300 CFM air flow rate and is only 31 dB in my 28 dB background room (you can hear it, but it is very quiet). This Honeywell unit is 52 dB (very loud) on high at 300 CFM. Cutting it to low cuts the flow to 100 CFM, and the noise is still 36 dB, about 5 dB louder than the Whirlpool. Get the Whirlpool unless noise doesn't bother you.
Works well, but bright light and loud.
August 12, 2013
Update: after 4 years of usage the motor went out. I contacted the company and they agreed to send me a new unit, but I first needed to send in the old one. The shipping cost was $90!! I wish the company would have sent me a new one first and I could have used the old box, and that would have saved me some money. More over, they should have covered the shipping. I'm not happy with the warranty coverage.Previous Review: This air purifier is large, and the instructions recommend that the unit to be 3 ft from the walls--which means it takes up a large footprint. It really easy to set-up and run (it took about 5 minutes to unbox it, install the carbon air filter, and turning it on). The air in our bedroom was surprisingly crisp after running it for a few hours. There are a couple things to note.-First, this purifier is loud, even on the quietest setting. In our case, the purifier just replaced the white noise machine my wife use to have. On the loudest setting, it is just a bit quieter than a vacuum cleaner.-Second, it comes with a bright blue light. This light is seriously bright! It lights up the whole room. I've attempted different methods to cover the light, but it is so ridiculously bright. It's so annoying, we have considered returning it for something different.-Lastly, we bought the discounted "opened-box" version. It was totally worth it. The box had been opened, but all the original packaging and manuals were there. If it is an option for you, it is worthwhile.
Great Machine But Some Arrive with Defects
September 28, 2012
Let me start by saying that I ordered 3 of these machines for our home and have been running them for about 2 weeks now. Until now no problem. We run them on high 24-7. Its loud but we like the white noise as it helps the kids sleep and stay sleeping which is always a good thing. :)The problem occurred when I decided to order a 4th machine. It arrived at my office where I turned it on and immediately the room was filled with a fishy plastic type order that was unbearable. After reading a few reviews on Amazon about this problem I decided to return it and requested a replacement. Amazon replaced the machine and the new one arrived today. I set it up in my office turned it on and a slight fishy plastic smell started coming out. I decided to give it a try and left to grab a bite to eat for 20 minutes. When I came back and opened the door I started coughing badly. The room was filled with that smell. 3 other co-workers confirmed the smell as well.I called KAZ the number listed in the packaging materials. They said it was possible that the odor stuck onto some of the machines during manufacturing and they are not sure what it is. He said you can run the machine outdoors for 24-48 hours and it might help clear the smell.I decided to return it a second time and give it one more shot. If a 3rd machine arrives and has the same problem I guess I will have to look for another filter.I only hope that the smell is not toxic as it can affect many people who have compromised immune systems and are trying to breath healthier air. My advise is try and find this machine in store and see if they will match the Amazon price, then before purchasing turn it on and run it inside the store before taking it home.

Now it is a constant clicking (like playing cards in a bicycle tire) like there is a broken wing in there somehow
March 12, 2017
This didn't even last 4 months. Bought at Thanksgiving and it is not not working. About a month and a half in it start clicking when you would turn in on and off. Now it is a constant clicking (like playing cards in a bicycle tire) like there is a broken wing in there somehow. Very disappointed and it's beyond the return time frame. That's one downside to amazon. If you want to try it go to walmart or Home Depot where you have a year to return.
Legacy technology, that is loud, and the company no longer makes full replacement HEPA filters - unit has a life of one year
February 17, 2016
This needs to be prefaced by a huge warning: you can no longer buy full size HEPA filters from the company, you can only find full size after market filters which are very shady (I purchased one and within a month the unit was telling me it needed to be replaced). The companies solution to replace the HEPA filter is to stack two "half" size HEPA filters which do not filter as effectively and can make a whistling sound. If you buy this unit understand that you are doing two things: first you are buying a legacy HEPA filter (these went on market around 2000 - there have been dramatic improvements in terms of balancing the sound of units with the effiency of the unit). Second, and more importantly, you are buying a unit that will basically have to be fully replaced at the end of one year because you can no longer obtain brand or full filters to ensure its working properly.I cannot recommend this unit as you will have to spend another $119 in a year to replace if you want to ensure it is still working at the level you expect. You will end up spending $238 dollars within 12-18 months if you are aggressive with your filter changing. Despite what the manual may say the life expectancy of these HEPA filters in the real world is much shorter then in the laboratory testing. My advice for you is that if you are considering buying a HEPA filter, move on from this unit. It's ancient technology (2000 or so), loud, and you cannot get full size HEPA filters (only two half size HEPA filters which you are supposed to stack) from the company so you have to rely on questionable aftermarket vendors for the filters. Please do yourself a favor and as someone who has breathing problems, here is my advice: it may be sticker shock but you will definitely get what you pay for with these units. If you are willing to spend $119 or this unit, I would recommend saving up a little longer so you can look at units around the $202 price point. The technology and quality is night and day, plus you can get filters for their units. This unit is just wasting your money.
Was shipped properly and in good condition, but the fan motor does not work ...
January 13, 2016
This one gets 1 star for sure. Was shipped properly and in good condition, but the fan motor does not work on low at all. Medium and high are fine but low is as if it is unplugged. The instructions said contact KAZ, the seller at their customer service number. I did and they wanted me to box the unit back up and send it to them and then they would evaluate it and determine what to do and then ship me another one. I bought this unit to use now not in a few weeks from now. These folks have very poor customer service. Thank goodness for Amazon Prime. I have already printed up the return labels and will ship this back today. Now I will order another air purifier from someone other than these folks. Thank u Amazon Prime.
smelly
October 9, 2015
After just days of using this, it began to emit a smell much like a wet dog. We've tried thoroughly cleaning the filter (which looks very clean to the eye) but the smell remains - ick!!!! Returning it.I should note: I didn't go so far as to troubleshoot this because my experience with Kaz, the producer of the machine, has been so awful that I have no interest in doing work on my end to make their product function as expected. Returning and looking for a competitor's machine.
Long time satisfied user finds this air cleaner no longer acceptable
April 3, 2015
I have owned several of these air cleaners; counting the previous model I have owned them going back at least 15 years. I have been running three of them located throughout my house and they have worked great; sometimes after several years of service the motor would die and I would buy a new one. Recently one of my air cleaners died and I ordered a replacement, When I finally got around to running it I found that it gave off a bad smell even after running it for a few weeks. One of the older units I have needed a new HEPA filter; when I looked at the Amazon reviews of the replacement filters I found many complaints that these filters gave off a bad smell, plus the new replacement filter appears to consist of two stacked filters plus a foam gasket since the height of the two stacked filters is a bit less than the original filter. It appears the manufacturer of these air cleaners has ruined the design probably as a result of cost cutting. I'm now searching for an different supplier of air cleaners. What a shame that a great air cleaner has been ruined.

If I could return this item I would. I used it for 2 wks at 4 hours at a time. It still makes the bedroom smell of plastic and is much too loud for sleeping. Not too loud for daytime. I will not use it again due to the plastic smell.

Unfortunately threw out th box so can't return. When it came it had a couple deep scratch marks but box wasn't damaged..... that should have been my first clue. On high, there's something clanging around inside the motor that makes an obnoxious sound. So, I can only keepbit on low or medium.

Another Honeywell unit built in MEXICO FAILS!!!!!!!!
March 11, 2016
Usually this unit would receive a much higher rating as I own several of them but the last two are complete garbage. The reason I own so many is because I have allergies and love dogs: enough said. I have units in every main room of my house and some of the units have been running for 5-6 years non-stop. The last two I purchased in July 2015 and the last one November 2015. The one from July just stopped working and needs to be replaced. This unit that I am writing about however is a lightly used unit that is on for only 4-5 hours a day. Tonight it started to make a loud wobble noise and it would appear the main fan housing / bearing has worked its way free of the fan and is making a racket. The unit otherwise is only four months old and in perfect condition. Honeywell seriously needs to sit down with its Mexican plant managers and get quality control back in order. I own 8 units but will not be buying another one after the experience I have had with the last two units. This one will have to be sent back to the factory for repair or replacement. I'm very frustrated!!!!!! Time to build things in AMERICA again. Thanks for nothing Honeywell!!!! Update: 3-31-16 - Both units have been sent back to Helen Of Troy- KAZ Return department. This is the subsidiary of Honeywell that builds these units and handles warranty work and replacements. Both units mentioned above have been shipped back and I am awaiting the arrival of new ones. More issues to mention; While the people are very polite and easy to deal with at KAZ, this is a typical large warehouse organization and the process is like pulling teeth. After receiving your return authorization number, you have to send a letter along with the air cleaner and repack everything. Bad enough that you need to purchased a box, packing peanuts and tape and then spend a half hour doing the packing job but KAZ does not reimburse the consumer for the shipping or any of the packing materials. The total cost to ship the unit back to KAZ plus the cost of shipping materials cost almost as much as the new unit that they are sending. Essentially you receive a five year warranty that is worthless because you are better off spending another $25.00 to $30.00 and going to the store and buying a new unit versus wasting half a day on the phone with the KAZ warranty department plus packing materials, packing the unit and then shipping the unit. Its sad because these use to be the best units on the market and that is why I have 8 of them. The new units however are garbage!!!!!!!!!!!! Save your money and look for air cleaners from other manufacturers. Very Sad Indeed!!!!! Kaz needs to reimburse consumer return shipping costs otherwise the warranty is worth nothing!!!

I'll figure out how to fix the unit if possible but I can not recommend the purchase of a refurbish Honeywell 50250-S
July 8, 2015
Well, I missed the return window and that's on me for not opening the box using it right away. I'll figure out how to fix the unit if possible but I can not recommend the purchase of a refurbish Honeywell 50250-S. From day one it didn't work right. I could trick it in to running by spinning the fan manually to get it moving. I used it 3 times that way and then it stopped working entirely. Read the return policy!

User Overview
  • Kaz vs Lasko

Wow... With the Kaz height at 1292.5 inches, width at 324 inches and length of 423.2 inches, the Lasko with 920.5"X 283.1"X 999.2"... Hope they're unassembled, but still, way too big for my house. I'm still thinking about getting one for the barn, if i can find the space to put it.
