This machine is awesome. I make tortillas all the time now
August 10, 2017
This machine is awesome. I make tortillas all the time now. We use it to make quesadillas a lot and parbake with this and melt cheese in a pan. It is easy to use and I am glad I chose one that cooks as well as flatten the dough.
Awesome!! Where has this been all my life!
January 29, 2016
This machine is incredible! I have no idea why there are any complaints. It could be how or what they are using it for. Let me explain what I bought it for. I love homemade tortillas but cannot roll them into a circle to save my life. You cannot use a regular press like the one for corn tortillas, it simply will not work. The dough just will not expand and the dough just shrinks right back up. So, I bought this to try out. OMG!!! It is so awesome. I plug it in, wait about 3-4 minutes, roll a ball of tortilla dough in my hand, place it in the machine and press down firmly for 2 second, pick it up and press it again for 2 seconds and BAM, perfect ROUND tortilla. This thing will make them small or to the entire diameter, all depends on how many times and how hard you push. I just make the shape by pressing down twice then take it out and put the tortilla on my cast iron griddle to complete the cooking. DO NOT HESITATE, BUY THIS THING!!!! The reason it WORKS is because it uses the moisture in the tortilla and it "steam presses" the tortilla into the perfect round shape. It only takes 4 seconds. You CAN leave the tortilla on the cooker and it will cook it to a golden brown. I just like the cast iron because I am old school. If you leave it in the cooker to finish cooking, it will make your tortillas crispy the longer it is in there. Almost like a quesadilla. If I could give this 10 stars I would. Trust me, if you roll tortillas now and hate it, this will change your life. Home made tortillas are NO LONGER a pain to make. I even make a bunch of dough and refrigerate whatever I don't use that day. I can put cold dough in the press and have the exact same results.
Awesome!

After using a couple of times, we have perfected our flour tortillas! This was one of our best countertop appliance purchase.s. We can make a dozen fresh tortillas in just 30 minutes! Fresh tortillas at a fraction of the cost of a package of tortillas from any grocery store!
This is the BEST tortilla press
May 25, 2015
This is the BEST tortilla press. It heats quickly, is durable and heavy duty, and stays hot through pressing all your tortilla dough. I do not bake the tortillas on it because I like to use a cast iron griddle. Besides buying this for myself, I also purchased this as a gift for someone, who also thinks this is the best product. If you're looking for a tortilla press, I say this is the one. I love this product.
We use it for Chapatis/Roti and Arepas.
July 9, 2014
Use it for making whole wheat chapatis from fresh-ground flour. We use a bread machine to knead the dough for 10 minutes and then let it condition for 30 minutes. Roll into 2" balls, squash them in the press. Flip the chapati end to end after maybe 30 seconds to cook both sides evenly. Then pull it out and finish with a gas flame if you like it to puff up big and steam-cook from the inside. Puffing up seems mostly to be a matter of water ratio. We use 2 cups of wheat berries to 1 cup of water, add 2 TBSP olive oil and a heaping teaspoon of Crazy Salt. You get a soft dough. Fair warning: this type of chapati/roti can be addictive. If you're doing arepas, don't squash them a lot. The dual cooking surfaces pull moisture out of doughs quickly, and make them thinner. The lower surface heats up to around 375 F, the upper surface is always 50-60 degrees cooler. (Measured with Fluke Instruments infrared temperature gun.) I ignore the warnings to heat up the unit only in the open position, because A) it heats up more evenly when closed, and B) the non-stick coating is unaffected because C) the internal thermostat regulates the temperature whether the unit is open or closed. That said, you should ALWAYS follow the Owners Manual and NEVER EVER heat up the unit closed unless you are A) confident in your own common sense and also have a temperature gun to confirm my reasoning and make a decision for yourself.I think the biggest safety/convenience feature they could add would be a buzzer that sounded every 10 minutes or so, because it is NOT HARD to leave this unit plugged in accidentally (Kinda' like waffle irons, infrared space heaters etc...) Is it really dangerous to leave it plugged in? No. Is it an expensive waste of electricity? Definitely!By the way, the non-stick surface is good. If dribs or drabs of gooey stuff sticks, just let it cook a bit longer, and it will dry up and slide off. Then again, we've been careful not to use excessive oil or other things that are known to be aggressively sticky.
Great Machine
April 17, 2014
Great machine!!! I use it 3-4 times a week and perfect tortillas every time. I also make pizza crusts, pancakes and crepes. You have to get the recipe and technique right for tortillas but once you do it is easy. Love having a freezer full of bean burritos for a quick lunch.

Awesome tool, Homemade Tortillas !!!

Very sturdy and very easy to use. I would suggest to cut out 2 square pieces of wax paper when pressing tortillas to avoid sticking.

I can make homemade tortillas!!!
March 11, 2016
As a first time tortilla maker, I was so surprised and pleased to learn how to make homemade tortillas. This press is great, i do place my masa doughs in a plastic to press. It does require a little practice but now I use it even to strecht my GF pizza doughs.
No more store bought.
July 16, 2015
Very satisfied. I had been being cheap and doing tortillas by hand and rolling pin. You should put the dough slightly off center so it doesn't come out the side, or use a smaller dough ball. I would order again. Also, let the weight of the cast iron flatten the dough, not much strength needed to get the job done. Cast iron will shear if too much weight applied to the handle, although it's seems better built than it was in the picture of it broken. Remember it's not like steel. Enjoy!
Very happy with it
December 18, 2014
Very well made and heavy duty. I researched quite a few presses and this one is well worth the price and is built to last. Very happy with it!
Heavy-Duty, well-made needs only One Pressing to Work
December 18, 2014
This makes perfect tortillas. If you place the ball of Masa a little above the center between either waxed paper or plastic wrap, they come out perfectly round and thin. The lever presses down and flattens the dough. This is heavy duty, and doesn't need to be pressed more than once. I highly recommend.

September 30, 2017
Do NOT use this to cook your flour tortillas. But as a previous reviewer stated, press and release a couple of times for just a couple of seconds to get them flat, THEN cook in a pan or with it open. Otherwise, it gets gross and crispy. If you want a crispy tortilla, then cook it completely in this. Otherwise, use this to flatten and initiate the cooking process so it doesn't shrink.

I love it it works great the only problem I wish the tempeture can be control, other than that works great.
Great Flour tortilla maker
May 7, 2014
It does better than one i bought in Mexico because it makes a bigger tortilla. You must let this machine heat up well and then it turns (automatically) off when too hot. I love it!! I am purchasing another for my mom, she will def use it more than me..... I recommend this machine very well. My mom who is a true Mexican woman with all the old traditions loved it.
Just what I needed
February 4, 2014
It works as I had hoped, and sure beats rolling out flatbread dough by hand. I make gluten free sourdough tortillas (flatbreads) with it so that my family can have more nutritious and less expensive "bread" than the gluten free fluff from the store. It does take practice to get the right technique and you do need a wetter dough than you might think to get nice tortillas.
It's okay
January 28, 2014
This is a nice tortilla press. It flattens out the tortillas well. I haven't found a recipe I like which is my problem! The tortilla maker is fine. It doesn't cook them the same as if you were using a flat iron on a stove. It gives them a more overall brown top. So they are a bit crispier. The dough does not stick to the iron so it's easy to move the dough around to cook it evenly. It was kind of a high priced gadget. I'm not sure I'd buy it again, but it's nice to have for homemade tortillas.
Great Machine
December 21, 2013
This is a well built machine, heats realtively quick, but didn't know making fresh tortillas was so tricky. After placing raw dough onto unit there are so many air bubbles in the gough that need to be released every few seconds (or the tortilla explodes into bits) so it takes a whole lot longer to cook a single tortilla (no fault of the machine, just the cooking process) that I had expected. However the unit works really well to heat store bought tortillas, making quesidillas and believe it or not, I use it to make the best scrambled egg (1-egg) in about 20-seconds. It's a machine, but tortillas from scratch are just aren't as quick as I had hoped.

August 25, 2017
Super happy with this! I've never used one of these before so I have nothing to compare it to though. It's smaller than I expected but I'm sure there were measurements posted that I didn't read. It works great though. I'm very happy with it. Hubby is thrilled to have homemade tortillas!
but this thing still cranks out great tortillas regardless
July 4, 2017
Ok. So the handle was broken in half when it arrived, but this thing still cranks out great tortillas regardless. I was going to send it back, but really needed some tortillas for dinner and decided it still is FAR better than rolling out by hand. the weight of it is the magic.
Nicely made, and easy to use
February 19, 2017
This press works great, and is well-made. I don't know why I waited so long to start making my own tortillas - it's easy and fun. It is a good idea to line the press with a plastic bag (or parchment paper, etc) to make it easy to peel off the tortillas.
MUCH faster and more uniform than a rolling pin.
January 25, 2017
I've used this about five times since purchase and I'm very happy with it. I have read other reviews that the pin breaks used too much pressure is applied. I haven't had that issue and will note that the item came with an extra pin. I've also taken other users' suggestions and added a thin piece of cardboard (think cereal box thickness) to make the tortillas a little bit thinner. I also recommend using a zip-lock bag on top and bottom to keep a clean press.Only four stars because even when the dough ball is placed a little off-center, the tortillas tend to be a little thicker on one side than the other.Nevertheless: RECOMMENDED

April 5, 2016
I bought this after getting tired of rolling out a bunch of tortillas by hand. Like most presses that I've seen/worked with the tortillas will be thicker on the side closest to the hinge. I fix this by pressing the dough then flipping it and pressing again. I usually keep the dough inside of a split gallon sized ziplock so this make the whole thing easier to do and eliminates any sticking. Works great on flour or corn tortillas. My only gripe now is the size. I think I will have to build something to get the size that I want.
Pretty cool heavy
March 7, 2016
Pretty cool heavy, heavy duty tortilla maker. Cranks out fine tortillas. Only qualms are the aluminum or pot metal pin that holds the handle on--doesn't look long for this world and I ordered it on Friday and on Monday it is 5 dollars cheaper. Grrrr.

Not for Roti

It worked really well, but the tortillas were a lot smaller than we were expecting. Too small for us so we returned.
iffy at best
April 9, 2017
Unfortunately I took too long to try it out. I can't return it. I wasn't strong enough to flatten the press so I asked my son. He quickly pushed hard enough to break the handle. I'm sure if you are just the right strength, it will be fine. It shocked me that the cast iron handle broke where there should have been no weak areas. I won't be getting one again. Believe it or not, I can do them by hand. I thought it would be easier. Who knew.
Missing parts!

I received my package today. It would be perfect other than it didn't come with the handle!! Kind of hard to use with no handle in the package. I looked everywhere. In the box, the plastic container. NO handle. So it won't work like it should!!

This tortilla press is heavy cast iron. The reason it gets 3 stars is because the tortilla, when pressed, is still rather thick.

May 30, 2016

I found the quality of the product really good but depends what are you planning to make
November 21, 2014
I bought it to make roti's(indian breads) . I found the quality of the product really good but depends what are you planning to make. If its for tortilla's, you may not find the best product than this. But I wanted to make rotii's and I was disaapointed with the heat levels being too low to be able to make chapati's. It turned out to be a very good press but making chapati's is not good. It takes a sec to flatten the ball easily and it takes forever to make roti and then you cannot make them and keep as they will be hard and dry as they were cooked over low heat for a long time.

Useless.
October 22, 2017
Worthless if you ask me. First off, the handle is just asking to be broken with too much pressure, although it can take a lot. One. Two, the tamales don't expand as big as the press so you still end up taking them off and rolling them with a wooden roller. I just don't see the point of this thing. I wish I would have spent more on a wooden press.
It is sturdy but it doesn't flatten enough

It is sturdy but it doesn't flatten enough. I don't use this anymore for tortillas. I just use a roller.
Disappointment
September 1, 2015
This press never worked very well. It wouldn't press the dough flat enough, so it really made more of a pancake. I tried putting a dish cloth and some wax paper in it to get the desired thickness, and that helped. Yesterday, while pressing tortillas, the handle broke. This was a disappointing purchase for me.
Very disappointed.

They are maybe more like 'Gordita' makers
April 30, 2015
Bought a bunch of these as xmas gifts. Haven't heard from my polite relatives, but I can tell you ours doesn't work. The two halves of this thing don't meet evenly, and they don't meet in such a way to make a flat tortilla. They are maybe more like 'Gordita' makers, or maybe like those Thai Pork Buns? But not flat. Not really flat at all.Yeah I read some reviews that tell you about how to make them work better and about how easy it is. I only wish the company who made this thing read those reviews and improved its product all by itself. I know I would.
