Side by Side Comparison of: Akro-Mils vs Rubbermaid

I bought more and more of these bins after a starter set. The quality and sturdiness and stacking function are spot on! I also like how easy it is to remove objects because of the smooth curve at the front of the bin, nice touch!

They're Akro-Bins, the original one and only. Built well, bright colors, what more could you want?! Workshop organization and nostalgia combined in to one product. 10/10 would recommend.

These are perfect little containers for my smaller stuff. This is my second purchase of these small red containers. I also buy the other sizes, plus use the Akro-Mils organizer storage boxes. You can't go wrong with this company.

These are great, I stack 3 in my cabinet in kitchen.....but these are very small. I was expecting a little bigger, but I didn't pay attention to the dimentions. But great product and seller was great!

I don't normally write reviews but given the questions noted and concerns expressed by some reviewers I thought this might be helpful. The plastic quality is excellent - it is not "hard" or sharp; it is "soft" but rigid. They don't clank if they bump each other because of that "soft" quality. They fit in every bathroom and kitchen drawer I have, even the shallow middle drawer in the bathroom. I keep ordering more ... I just ordered two more sets. I use them to organize OTC drugs and pharmaceuticals, all of which are rarely used in our home, things like bandaids so we can find them when we need them "once in a blue moon;" makeup items, small toiletries, etc. I can categorize everything - dental floss and picks in one, lip balm and glosses, blah blah blah - you get the idea. Writing this I just realized I haven't bought them for my sewing "stuff" yet. That will be next - all those little sewing gadgets. I like the way I can line these up in drawers sideways so I can reach into the 'front" of the bins easily (or top down, but having the lower front is convenient). These are substantial and sturdy. I am pretty sure I will be buying even more -- I must have thirty-something of these things by now in drawers all over the house.

Strong, stable, stackable, 'nestable' - these boxes have it all... except labels. Would be nice if Akro included a few labels for the front... they do, but they want you to pay for them, so I'll just cut out some card stock. These also can mount to the Akro wall-system which is nice, and may be the way I build my next garage work bench. Currently they're sitting on the bench stacked 3 high. I liked them so much I placed a second order!

Very durable and perfect for organizing items. Fits perfectly on their modular shelf system.

I bought 25 of these totes total, for moving to a new home. It was absolutely a brilliant purchase, because these totes are the most sturdy, well-made totes I have ever used. I now have fantastic storage units for my new home, and I love that I can see through them easily to know what is inside. I think they will last forever too, because it's very rigid plastic, not like the flimsy ones you sometimes find at dollar stores or kmart. I used to buy Sterilite, but I really think these are way better.

Each bin and lid arrived undamaged and in perfect condition. No cracks or missing handles. Very happy with them and used all five immediately. I will purchase more.The plastic is a bit weak in the sense of not retaining strength under heavy loaded containers stacked atop each other. Leave the heavier one at the very bottom. The rest were used with clothing, sheets and summer clothing that won't be used for a few months. Winter gear comes out summer clothes go in. I put 2-3 nice smelling dryer sheets in there and will change every month decreasing the stale plastic smell that would normally be absorbed by the clothes. These are large enough to hold 10 pairs of jeans and a few sweaters in just one container. Loads more tee shirts and shorts and an absurd amount of baby clothes. They fit under my nieces twin sized bed that the containers were sitting on. Three of them are there two in the closet.I'll get some smaller ones for hats and miscellaneous items.

Perfect size and cover for what I needed. This size is not too big and not to small. Tops stay secure. Nice and heavy. Stacks wonderfully!

I really like the size of these tubs. They stack very nicely and hold enough to be useful. The see through is a great attraction for me, also.

When were ordered these totes, we were not sure how big or how sturdy they would be. When they arrived, we were very impressed with them. They don't sell these totes at our Walmart and the ones they do sell at our Walmart are a lot cheaper made. We did have a small problem with one of them, having a slight damaged to them but still very useable. When I called Amazon about this, they credited my card back for what would one of them would have cost. We are very happy with these totes and will buy more soon.

Were as described and work well under bathroom sink cabinet where space is limited between plumbing and cleaning supplies. Using them for bandaids, hair ties/barretts, makeup and the many other small items that make clutter in a bathroom. My only complaint is they don't stay together very well, but they are not supposed to be sliding drawers that stay connected together. Not bad for the price, considering how pricey some of the other small storage bins were.

Same as the one that came with my Hornady press. Hope they last longer than the original. Handy to stack on the bench.

They stack but you can barely fit anything in there when they're stacked.

Perfect for what I was looking for. Great price for the set, and they fit under my raised platform bed perfectly (Zinus 14 Inch SmartBase Mattress Foundation / Platform Bed Frame / Box Spring Replacement / Quiet Noise-Free / Maximum Under-bed Storage, Queen). They arrived undamaged; however, one of the blue handles was popped out of the top and neither I nor my husband could muscle it back into place. I don't have the lids on the containers anyway so it wasn't a big deal to us, so I didn't bother returning.

They are fine for what they are. For my purposes however, the fact that the latches bulge out an additional 2 inches on each side (from other "half-height" bins you may be familiar with) meant they would not fit properly on my stainless steel restaurant shelves.Measure carefully if this might be an issue for you.

The product is good. One of the plastic pieces is broken. I will need a replacement. Thank you.

This was great! I was able to store my daughters clothes in it along side my pre pregnancy clothes. One thing I don't like is the top that latches on is kinda weak so I suggest not overfilling it, other then that it's pretty good.

Rubbermaid is a trusted brand in our home, but it can be a little pricey. Buying in bulk does save you some money. We are in the process of an early spring cleaning and I have so many things I just wanted to toss, and I ended up donating... but we still had A LOT of things that needed just put away. With lack of closet space, being able to use these boxes to stack is priceless. The have a snap lock feature which is great if you have little ones running around who love getting into things.

Would have given a 5-star rating but they are smaller than claimed. The containers are not 16.7" L x 11.0" W x 10.8" H, but more like13.25" L x 9 3/8" W x 10.6" H. They are well constructed and lock securely. The lids are 16.7" L x 11.0" W.

Even with the dimensions given these were a lot smaller than I expected. I purchased them for makeup storage and they're not really good for that unless you don't have much makeup. Right now they're just holding hair clips. They're sturdy and fit together nicely, just not really what I was looking for.

I give this product a mixed review. The item itself I would give 5 Stars, it will work perfect for me on the loading bench. 1 Star goes to the product description. I think labeling the product dimensions as stacked (row of 3 with 3 on top of it, which is how it is packaged) is quite misleading. Underneath the product description are customer questions and the top one is the actual size of the individual bins. In my opinion, the product description should be of the actual bins themselves.

Used it to storage baby books in the basement. No very durable with heavy items. I don't feel comfortable lifting it up by the handles as they are very flimsy. Will have to have to life from the bottom. Will use the remaining bins for clothing. Definitely don't use for anything with any real weight.

These are OK for light storage, but the lids do not fit very securely on the top of the bin. If you fill the bin and anything in it makes the opening bow open a bit, the lid does not secure all the way around the top and it ends up being held together just by the little bit of lip on each handle that snaps over the bin and the sides of the bin then bow open under the lid. Simply using for storage, not a problem, we were using them while moving and it made them a bit unstable to move around. If you need an airtight, snug seal, these are not the ones for you. But if you just need somewhere to organize things they'll work fine.

I bought the 40-gallon tote to use as a covered curbside recycling bin. As of the date of this review, it seems to be the largest size available at any reasonable price. The idea is to store our recycling outside, and keep it dry and inaccessible to animals until pickup night. I prefer a flat container like this because it is more stable. We live on a busy highway and the tall "garbage can" style bins are more likely to blow over into the road, especially when haphazardly replaced by careless sanitation workers.It arrived as advertised, but overall it feels...flimsy. The lid (at least for this size) is attached via a hinge, but the hinge only allows it to open about 90 degrees. Beyond that, the hinging forces begin to torque on the structure of the bin itself. I'm tempted to just remove the hinge altogether, lest a sanitation worker try to force it more than 90 degrees and end up cracking the side of the bin.I do like the domed lid, which will prevent rainwater from collecting on the surface. It remains to be seen if this is worth the $39.It is worth noting that I only found the 40-gallon version by directly searching "Rubbermaid Roughneck 40 gallon". It still takes you to this page, which is supposedly only listing the 14-gallon version. But, if the product title on the page says "40 gallon", you will get the 40-gallon version even if the product details say otherwise. I don't understand why they haven't bothered to just list "40 gallon" as one of the size options.Update: I just found this 54-gallon option: 54 Gal. Sturdy Polyethylene Plastic Hi-top Storage Tote. It appears to have a completely separate lid (which is what I want), but I won't be sure until it arrives. Unfortunately, it's a low-popularity item, so it won't arrive for a few weeks.

Not quite as heavy duty as I would have thought. One of the 5 boxes was damaged upon arrival - and that was with packaging around it. I really wanted clear so I could quickly grab what I need from my camper storage. I can tell I'm going to need to be careful with them so I don't crack out a corner. I like the lids - easy one hand removal.

These are OK for the price (around $10 per) but they don't seem as rugged as one would expect from the name. The bottoms seem a bit flimsy so I wouldn't trust too much weight in them. Secondly, the covers come of very easily without pulling the locking tabs out. The amount of plastic that tucks under the tote in order to "lock" on is minimal and with very little pressure applied in the right spots will pop the lid off. With that being said, the price is still right but they seem more like an economical line and should be advertised as so. Rough shouldn't be in the name considering the flimsy plastic and semi-secure lid. With that being said, I still plan on buying more as I've already filled the 5-pk I bought.

Okay for inside storage. Lid is a little loose if you want store stuff in a garage. The ends latch down but there isn't a lot tension in the middle of the lid.

Very flimsy and lightweight, unlike some other Rubberrmaid containers I've bought in the past. Catches are iffy. Will come open just by picking the container up. These might be okay for very light sweaters, but anything heavier is likely to be problematic. Actually, I can't recommend these for any use whatsoever unless you will never have to pick the container up. Very poor value for what these cost.

These seem sturdy enough, at least as much as any other. But, I'm disappointed in the lids. I bought some Ziplock brand tubs locally that are far better quality and the lids on those seal and snap on tightly. These lids will pop off if there is the slightest pressure against them. The "lock" is just for looks, evidently. I'd rather pay a little more for something that actually has a working lid.

The plastic is of good quality. The lids are of poor quality. When u put the lid on, the middle portion of the bin opens up. At first I thought I was over stuffing the bins. But the same thing happened when I had the bin half full. And the latches do not latch at all.

The covers for these "roughneck" bins are HORRIBLE. It's as if the clasps are for show only as there is no way they are designed to actually clip on and stay on. Theoretically you are supposed to put the cover on with the clasps open or out to the sides, and then once the lid is securely atop the bin, push the clasps in to secure the top and keep it on. That is not what actually happens because the plastic clasp is very junky and does not lock into place. We bought three or four of them and none of the covers locked in place or stayed on - and we did not overdo it or put too much stuff in. Even empty they're just cheaply made. So if you just want a bin to store and/or carry things to and fro and do not care about a cover or lid that will stay on to protect or at least whatever is inside, then buy these. If you want to have a sturdy bin with a lid that stays put and is easy to carry, do not buy this.

I should have listened to other reviewers! Hate when that happens. The size was perfect, I was using them to fill a roof bag on my car that had very specific dimensions. The tops barely stayed on, if at all. These bins were not overstuffed, but when even halfway the top didn't stay on. A bit disappointed bit I kept them anyways because of the size.

I should have listened to the other customers who left negative feedback and just bought totes at Wal-Mart. These totes are big, yes, but they don't seal. You have to tape them to get them to stay shut. Very cheap, and now I have had to duct tape them. Very disappointed.

These plastic storages look big/huge online, but they really look like toys kids would play with. They are so small I cannot use them for what I intended to use them for. Will return to seller.

Will be returning. I do not understand measurements and rely on pictures to help me. These pics are false advertising. I thought I was getting the full size bins not the ones you put pencils and pens in.

The lids have a locking mechanism, however, 3 out of the 5 lids didn't lock properly and popped off whenever I tried moving or lifting containers.

Does not live up to previously purchased Rubbermaid bin high quality. The tops seem like they will crack very easily. Also the bins are bowing. So when you want to close them, the tops won't go on unless you squeeze the sides of the bins to match up the opening of the bin with the lid. They don't stay closed/seal unless you put something on top of the bin the hold the top down. Not sure if this is due to shipping method/warehouse storage but I intend to use these for storage so not very good if they don't close properly to keep out dust....

Don't buy these they are terrible. I don't know if I have ever given a 1 out of 5 stars from anything from Amazon because I always read reviews carefully. I am moving and needed bins and didn't read many reviews. I got these and also ziploc 60 quart 4 pack (which are fantastic and fit more stuff). The problem with these Rubbermaid ones is the side closing locks are totally ineffective and come undone as soon as we try to pick them up. Its not a fluke, we though well maybe it's just the first one but every other one we have tried to use the lock has fallen off before we even put it on or slips and unlocks as soon as we pick it up. We filled one only halfway up with light itmes and it still came completely undone. Total pain in the butt to return so I would really caution people against them.

This is not the size they say it is!! I specifically needed it to be the size they said and the label even says its 23.9 x 15.9 x 8.7 inches. It is only18 1/2 X 8 1/4 X 12. Why the heck does the label even say the dimensions incorrectly! I am not a happy camper at all right now!

Poor Quality! One handle on each container is broken! Very disappointed in this product.

These are not the roughnecks I remember when I was younger. They are very brittle and only one out of five made it through a move. I am sure they would be good for people who need to store linens, but do not plan on placing anything more dense than a blanket inside of these. Rubbermaid should called these exactly what they are: Brittle Necks
