Works great, use it almost every day!
July 31, 2017
Cooks rice perfectly every time. If you leave it on for a long time after it's done, the rice gets a little brown and crispy at the bottom, but it's still nice to eat in my opinion and easily avoided. I've used this with both long grain white rice and calrose rice and it works great with both. The red is a pretty color and matches my other Oster appliances.I've never used the vegetable steamer feature because I usually make a lot of vegetables with dinner, more than the capacity of the attachment, but cooking vegetables isn't what I bought the product for so I'm not factoring it into my review.
Okay so I loved it, but it is really small
April 7, 2017
Okay so I loved it, but it is really small. For two people there are leftovers. I typically eat about a half to 3/4 of a cup. Hubby eats 2 cups. There are about 2 cups left after that. It's super cute and red! Everything is dumped into the dishwasher. Again, I loved it.
Perfect rice!
March 3, 2017
Bought this to replace my broken one (I dropped it). This rice cooker has a larger capacity and really does a great job on brown rice (we don't eat white rice) and the cooking time is right on point, if not a bit less than the required 45 minutes. Great price too. Only downfall, as with I think all rice cookers, is the mess from the little hole in the lid - but I just put a paper towel down in front of it.
Worth it !

Many months later and It still working just fine for me. I love being able to steam vegetables as well ! Maybe its a bit small for a family size but great for a few servings of vegetables. Worth it's price !
Wonderful and super useful!

Have to say this is absolutely awesome. I bought it at discount price around 18 dollars. And it can be used to cook noodles, make rice, make soup, and even hot pot!

I LOVE IT! I was unsure after reading some of the comments about the lack of off switch or whatever, but I bought it anyway and I absolutely adore it!This little rice cooker is small enough for my tiny space in my kitchen, but big enough to do enough rice to feed our family of 6 using proper portions! The ability to cook veg on top is just awesome and so far i've tried carrots on their own and a stir fry, while cooking rice. The stir fry veggies came out amazing and tasted better than when actually stir fried and I cooked veggie bites (like chicken nuggets but full of brocoli etc) i the steamer, while rice was cooking, too!I've only had this thing for 2 days and already it is the most used "gadget" in my kitchen! The on and off switch is no big deal. It heats then turns to warm. When you are done, put your rice in a container, unplug, clean up, great! This little guy cleans up very easy with soap and water! The instructions tell you to stir rice a while into cooking and a paddle is provided for doing so, so you don't need to worry about using metal utensils or anything like that!It says not to cook minute rice, and it says that brown rice takes longer. I actually tried brown minute rice our of curiousity and it cooked actually just the way I like it!For $18 this is a gem and you won't be disappointed!

This bowl is amazing!
March 20, 2017
Buying this bowl is one of the best decisions I've ever made. Rice is pretty much my go-to staple, so this purchase has made life a lot easier. I used to use strainers to wash my rice, which was just awkward and annoying. This bowl makes it easy to swish around the rice and let the water drain from either the bottom or the side spout.Seriously, it's less than $6. If you cook rice ever, just buy this bowl. It's awesome.
Inomata Japanese Rice washing bowl with side...

Great for cleaning rice, as washing rice is highly recommended since arsenic ooften is found in rice, absorbed through the growing fields! But washing it and not over boiling it gets rid of much of the poison. Washing the rice gets rid of the poisons too...and using a steamer, instead of letting the rice absorb the poisoned water, is the best way to cook it. So the first step, washing the rice very well, is great in getting rid of any poisons which are found in rice products as they are produced these days
Indispensable if you cook rice regularly
April 4, 2015
I cook rice as a basis for most meals (Japanese rice or basmati rice, mostly), and washing it is a bit of a pain. I usually put the rice in the ricecooker container, pour water, than squish it by hand, pour the water hand and restart a few times. This doesn't work very well, is pretty slow, but at least you avoid the mess with a fine mesh strainer (were the rice plugs the holes). I usually settle for somewhat clear water, and it takes about 5 minutes.I got fed up and looked up "rice washer" thinking surely cooking rice is universal enough that SOMEBODY would have solved it.This is magical. The holes at the bottom perfectly regulate the water: the flow is slow enough that you can just put the rice underneath the tap, squish it for about 20 seconds, and wash it more perfectly than you ever could before. The side holes are a bit large for basmati rice, but are still useful, especially when you don't want to wait for the rice to drain. Finally I recommend a silicone spatula, to make it easy to transfer rice from this bowl to rice cooker.
Surprisingly efficient
July 9, 2014
Surprisingly efficient; I guess I never washed my rice well before getting this bowl. They knew what they were doing when they designed this wash bowl. It removed more of that cloudy starch in less time with fewer grain loss. The cooked rice seemed less sticky too.
Excellent!

This item is of quality made from Japan. It was sold from JapanSuperMall through Amazon. Some people complain that it is not made from Japan, just make sure that you use JapanSuperMall vendor and you will get the authentic original made from Japan. The bowl is about 22.9 cm from the top and about 25.4 cm from the handle to the spout. There is a decent size hole on the handle to let it through a hook, if needed. The brand label that came with the product is all in Japanese script. This is dishwasher safe but the plastic is not ruggedly thick and looks delicate but solid so I opted to hand wash it every time to lengthen its durability and quality. Besides, it is super light weight. The bottom drain is small enough to not let Quinoa out. I have used Thai Jasmine Rice and Indian Basmati Rice and not a grain goes through the bottom. The side slit near the spout is wide enough to let some Quinoa grain get through. This drain bowl is also great for mushrooms and other fruits and vegetables. For less than 5 bucks this is an excellent deal with free 2 days shipping through Amazon Prime. I highly recommend this item to anybody. +1
Nice for rice
August 17, 2010
I'm very picky about my rice. So, I always wash my rice before cooking it and I always cook my rice in a rice cooker. The result is perfect rice every time. However, until now I've never found the right container to wash my rice in. Colanders are not suiatable because the holes in most colanders are too large so that the rice will escape with the water. With a common bowl the problem is, how do you drain off the wash water without also allowing rice to escape? I've used strainers and other approaches but, none work as well and a easily as this rice washing bowl. When I cook rice I usually cook 1-4 cups of rice at a time. This bowl handles that well but, can proabaly accomidate two to three times that much rice.In fact, when the bowl first arrived I thought it was too large. My mind changed immediately when I started using it. I like to use my hands when I wash rice and I have large hands; it turns out that the bowl is the perfect size so that I can get water, rice and my hands all into the mix and get the job done. While you can't really see it in the picture, the bowl has draining holes at the bottom. It also has draining holes incorporated in the little drain spout. This gives this bowl a lot of flexibility.I generally don't like single purpose tools in my kitchen, they just take up too much room and expense. Since I got the bowl I've been using it to wash, and strain all sort of things in addition to rice. It was a nice find for me and the price is also quite reasonable.

Simple yet elegant design, works perfectly. Highly recommend!

If you like drinking tea in the afternoons, or if you ever need a reason to heat water quickly, this may be the electric kettle for you!I didn't read the instructions right away, but I was able to figure this out using trial and error. Proctor Silex is a very well-known company, and their products have been around for years. This handy electric kettle has very easy-to-read notations on it, the most important of which being the "minimum fill line."The lid has to be completely closed (snapped shut) for it to work, and the power switch is the thumb lever that looks like an opener. Once started, the thumb lever lights up and you can hear the heating elements start their magic. It takes just a few minutes for the water to heat up, so please keep that in mind! It's not like putting a pan of water on the stove - this thing is FAST.Once I hear it boiling or starting to boil, I turn it off, unplug it, and use it for tea. It's narrow design allows it to be stored in all kinds of small places.I love this simple little unit and would highly recommend it to anyone looking to drink some tea or make hot water in an instant.
Perfect for the office
September 5, 2016
I purchased this water boiler for my office so I can make coffee and tea without trekking to the communal Keurig. I keep a caraf of water at my desk and just heat up the desired amount as I need it. This is small enough to keep on my bookshelf when it's not in use so it stores away right next to my coffee maker. The cord for this kettle is very, very short, which is fine if you have an outlet right next to your table, counter, desk, etc. All of my outlets are closer to ground level so I just set the kettle on the floor to boil, let it cool off, and then unplug it and store it. The little lever at the top of the handle turns red when it's on and then the light goes off and the lever pops up to let you know it's done. It's not overly noisy, just your standard kettle sounds. I've had mine for over 9 months and it's still going strong with no calcification or other issues. Great purchase!
Perfect for formula bottles
July 17, 2016
We use this for our sons formula. We boil the whole pitcher and then we can heat up each individual bottle of water in the microwave for the perfect temperature. This has traveled with us everywhere we go with the baby and so we never have to worry - hotel or a stay at grandmas, we got our clean water for his formula. The switch automatically turns off when the water is boiled so we can set it up and go to bed and have no fear. We have been using it for over a month so far with zero issues.
Great kettle!
March 22, 2016
This electric kettle rocks. We have had the exact same one in my office break area for years, and I finally decided I would like it for home to replace my stovetop kettle. It's amazing that I could buy the identical one as the ones we have at work ---and I mean IDENTICAL. If it ain't broken, don't fix it, I suppose! There isn't much to say other than it gets the job done -- and very quickly -- even filled to the max. It's nice that it has an auto shut off once it reaches full boil...one thing that was always annoying with the stovetop kettle was the high pitched noise that would keep going till you came over to shut it off. The plug is removable from the base, which is also helpful for storage and moving around with it. I use this nearly every day.
Considering getting more!
September 28, 2015
UPDATE: I've officially had this product for a year now and I can still say that it's going strong. I only use it with water and I've never noticed any rust or paint chipping, etc that some reviews have stated before. I loved my electric kettle so much that I convinced my sister to get one as well since she is generally very busy and on the go as well. Since I've had this kettle for a year and have had zero problems, I would highly suggest getting one. Especially since it is at such a great price and looks exactly as pictured. Plus, when I'm not using it I detach the cord and place it inside the pot for easy storage. This also makes me confident I won't lose my cord in between transitions such as when I moved into a new place. It runs perfectly and us extremely easy to use! I use it about every other day and have been for almost two months without any problems. Thinking about getting it as a gift for some friends who are also in apartments/dorms with limited space or access
Proctor -Silex 1 Liter Electric Kettle, GREAT for GIFT and home
August 30, 2014
This Proctor -Silex 1 Liter Electric Kettle is a great HOT WATER POT, it is NOT for heating food or drinks in...JUST WATER. It runs on 1000 watts of electricity and takes just minutes to boil water,up to a quart ( OK a LITER) for instant TEA,COFFEE,COCO,SOUPS,and even instant oatmeal, instant grits and ramen noodles. It is great and faster than my microwave for hot water when I need it. If you have 'hard water' and the heat element ,in the bottom of the pot, ggets crusty...just put enough white vinegar in the pot to cover the heat element and let it sit a few minutes...the pot will come clean and will be ready to go again (well OK ,rinse it out,or cook a pot of water to clear the taste) And I read where it does not pour well as the top is not sealed....well don't DUMP BOILING WATER out, pour it out and the pot works fine...and put down those pointy scissors. My parents broke their pot(so I gave them another) and they had had it for a year and a half...but they admitted that they cooked almost everything in it ,using it eight to ten times a day,for hot drinks to hot food as it was so much easier than their stove and microwave. I have a new replacement for them in the closet already. This is one gift I got for them that they USE,and at such a good price.

Great little rice cooker
May 9, 2017
I love everything about this cooker but 1 thing: Don't trust the keep warm feature. Keep an eye on it or unplug it as soon as it's done cooking otherwise you will eventually develop a nice crispy shell to your rice. That's the only downside to this cooker.
Slighty short of 6 perfectly cooked cups
January 8, 2017
I purchased the Oster 6 cup Rice Cooker to replace a larger, older model whose lid hinge had broken. This rice cooker does an excellent job cooking rice. No burnt bottom layer, just perfectly cooked, fluffy rice. That being said, it is not 6 true cups. It's 6 "Oster provided measuring cups" The actual measurement is about 3/4 of a cup to an Oster cup. Not a huge deal, as most of the time I do not cook 6 full cups, but slightly deceptive in my opinion.
Mostly Positive, considering the price
November 8, 2016
Update 6/17/17: I've now been using the rice cooker for 7 months, and it continues to work fine. I just do 2 cups of brown rice all the time. In addition to rice, I've found it convenient for cooking beans (pinto and black beans). I fill the bottom with about an inch of dry beans, let them soak in water for several hours with the cooker unplugged, and then add spices and let it cook through the regular cycle and then stay on the warm cycle another hours or two. There are 2 negatives: if you put in too much water, prepare for a big mess, and the bottom eventually gets stained with the strongly colored beans.Original review:I've now been using this little rice cooker for over a month, using it about 3 times a week, cooking 1, 2, or 3 cups of brown, white, or brown/white mix (using the "rice cooker cup that comes with it, which is 3/4cup). It's much smaller than rice cookers I've used in the past, and barely can handle the 3 cups. I've been quite happy with it -- the rice is great and it cleans up well. For the price and value, I have no complaints. I've found that adding a little more water and getting the rice right when it's done (that is, don't let it sit there warming too much) gives the best result. Now for the negatives I've found, things which you would expect from such an inexpensive item: 1) when making 3 cups (and sometimes 2) the liquid can climb out the vent hole leading to a messy lid and sometimes spills on the counter, 2) you have to plug and unplug the unit each time you use it or it seems to warm endlessly, and 3) if you let the cooker keep warming for too long after the rice is done, it will often leave brown overcooked rice mat sticking to the bottom. Since I rarely make 3 cups, (1) is not much of a problem, but I do find that (2) is annoying. Regarding (1), I've found that placing a little corn cob skewer in the vent helps limit the mess, perhaps by allowing liquid to drip back into the cooker -- see the photo.
Works well
September 8, 2016
We purchased this specifically to cook rice. We followed the instructions for water/rice ratio and it worked pretty well. It did not stick or burn. We unplug the cooker after the rice is done.
It only becomes a health hazard at pretty high cooking temperatures
June 22, 2016
Exactly as shown. Only problem is, the instructions booklet says that the pan has a nonstick coating, which isn't mentioned anywhere online. Nonstick coating is, ya know, carcinogenic. It only becomes a health hazard at pretty high cooking temperatures, so this particular device should be okay, but it's still something to try to avoid. Wish I'd known about it.
Set it and forget it!
May 8, 2016
I really like it. I've had it for about 2.5 years, and I use it constantly. If you are a rice aficionado, you probably want to look for something better than this, but if you just want a hassle-free way to cook your rice, this is so easy.I LOVE love love making chicken and rice, but I hated the hassle of watching the rice, making sure it didn't boil over, etc... I have a super teeny tiny kitchen, so it had never occurred to me to look for another appliance - especially one that really only does one thing. But I was annoyed and desperate, and this looked pretty small - plus it also apparently steams vegetables - so I grabbed it prime-shipped for under $19.I usually cook basmati in it, and the only issue I have ever had it is if you don't unplug it right after it's done, it will keep sort of cooking the bottom of the rice, even after the "cook" portion of the process is over. That's a bit annoying, but no big deal, and the material the cooker is made of cleans so easy, I've never had to scrub off cooked-on rice. In fact, I usually just scoop it up with the rest of the rice and eat it - it's just a bit golden, but still fine. :-)I was THRILLED when I realized how easy it was to make "Spanish Rice" with this cooker. I just throw the rice in, add the seasoning, add the water, stir it up, put the lid on, and turn it on. I'll never make rice on the stove again!I once tried cooking Rice-a-Roni, and thought the end-result was too watery. I kept hitting the lever to keep cooking it, but all that really did was burn the bottom after awhile. It's fine, because I don't like Rice-a-Roni anyway! :-DSo, like I said, if you're really big into professionally prepared rice, you'll probably want something fancier. But if you're just tired of wasting time watching rice boil, or sick of cleaning up the boiled-over mess, and you want to just set it and forget it? This is brilliant. I love it.

August 28, 2017
I finally got to use this and it does the job. It's considerably larger than I need, so that makes it a little awkward to use, however, it allows the rice to be rinsed without losing any. Transferring the rice from the washing bowl into the rice cooker is a minor challenge. It's difficult to get every wet grain of rice out of the bowl. Rinsing the rice did make a noticeable difference in the end product, my cooked rice was not starchy or sticky.

February 12, 2017
This works as intended. However I find this was much bigger than I needed! I do not use the side drainer so much, it seems the rice gets stuck in it! I just use the bottom drainer as illustrated. I cannot compare this with anything, as I never "washed" rice before. Now when I make rice, always will wash.
Uncooked rice is the perfect size to clog up the bottom ports
March 4, 2016
I had higher hopes for the utility of this strainer. The holes in the bottom are not as numerous as I expected and staining rice doesn't work very well. The water pools and the rice doesn't get properly cleansed. Uncooked rice is the perfect size to clog up the bottom ports. This strainer works well for cooked pasta. The slits at the pour spout are okay but it's not any better than a standard kitchen utensil. If you don't have a strainer currently, not a bad choice. Definitely wouldn't recommend this to replace another one.
Inomata Japanese Rice Washing Bowl with Side and Bottom Drainers, White
February 22, 2015
This colander drainer pourer is the right size for general use in the kitchen. It will handle a large pan of boiled spaghetti or a small amount of rice equally well and after draining, it can place the product just cooked in a serving dish without so much as a spilled string or grain. If you are looking for a good kitchen colander, give this one a try. For the price it is a bargain. Although they sent a clear plastic product, it is very acceptable. I like it.
Perfect for beginners and teenagers
November 30, 2014
This is an awesome rice bowl. Being Asian, we eat rice at every meal and making rice is a chore everyone hates since the rice we eat is a mixture of short and long grain rice. As such, if the water to rice ratio is not correct, the rice is not cook completely or becomes gruel since it is hard to drain the water completely without spilling rice when using a regular bowl. We could always tell how experience the person who made the rice was, depending on how cooked it was. This bowl solves the problem of having too much or too little water. As such, I felt fine letting my teenage sister or niece make rice, since I knew it would turned out edible. The reason I gave it 4 instead of 5 stars is because I wish the bowl was just a bit bigger. We usually make about 6 -8 cups of rice and I can rinse 6 cups of rice in the bowl if I'm careful without rice going over the edge. Other than that, it's the perfect bowl.

With the exception of the heating coil at the bottom - it is all plastic The attached cord Since the kettle still works perfectly fine, I hesitate to replace it
September 11, 2017
Have had this Kettle since February 16, 2014. Works just as well as it did the first time it was used three years and seven months ago. Bought this primarily to boil water for tea and not using the "on the stove, old conventional pot (that can be boiled dry)." Prefer this heating method. I always use filtered cold water from my refrigerator. Never put anything in the pot except water.Pros: Inexpensive Durable Lightweight Doesn't take up much room on the counter 3-4 minutes of boil time Auto Shut off Cons: With the exception of the heating coil at the bottom - it is all plastic The attached cordSince the kettle still works perfectly fine, I hesitate to replace it. Unfortunately the issue of boiling water in plastic, or having any hot foodstuff in contact with plastic - now bothers me. I have replaced all of our food storage containers with glass ones. Now to search for a BPA free, if not all glass kettle. If the plastic issue doesn't bother you, this is the best kettle for the price.
Good but plug has bad connection where it plugs into the pot. I have 2 and they both do the same thing. But I am using it anyw
July 31, 2017
I do like it and we have 2 of them. It does only have one small issue. The plug goes into the coffee pot and it has a loose connection, you have to play with it, sometimes wedge something underneath to make it stay on. The old one does the same exact thing. I would probably recommend something similar but this one is a bit of a problem. We still use it anyways, it boils the water great. Its just the connection where it plugs into the pot that does not be able to have a tight connection. it is loose and the pot continuously shuts off all the time. So I have to keep watching it until the water gets hot.
Small and short cord, but a good product overall
August 19, 2016
It's a little small which isn't the fault of the manufacturer since it's clearly labeled on here, but if you're someone who uses a lot of hot water for tea or making ramen or anything like that, I'd get a bigger one. There is a white residue on the inside like other reviewers said, but I'm thinking that's just from the water since there wasn't any in there when I first got it and I wiped the whole thing out before I used it.The short cord really isn't that much of a hassle if you're using this for your dorm, seeing as everything's pretty close together in that living situation anyway, but if you've got a larger room or you're buying this for your home I'd also consider using this with some kind of extension cord.
Decent cheap kettle
August 27, 2015
EDIT: I bought a different electric kettle but held on to this one. My new one works a lot faster than this one ever did, but it was slightly more expensive. After a few months this one started working again, so I bumped up the review to four stars, but it is working a lot slower than I remember it.I would give this kettle 3.5 stars if it was possible. It finally broke on me after 2.5 years. For the price, that's what I would normally expect from a kettle priced like this, but I specifically bought it BECAUSE everyone said how durable it was. I finished boiling a cup, and turned it off and two minutes later my mom said it randomly turned on, clicked off, and then wouldn't turn back on. Not entirely sure what happened, but I suppose I should have unplugged it. Not 100% satisfied. When it worked, it worked really well and fast. I'd use it every day, sometimes multiple times a day. The size is good (I never have to boil more than a few cups at a time) and the cord is long(ish) enough that i can get it to open space on my counter. I really would suggest you buy this, maybe I just received a defective one.
Heats Very Fast
April 1, 2015
I bought this to replace an electric kettle I never really liked but used anyway. When it unceremoniously added itself to my device graveyard I chose this kettle as its replacement. So far it is a vast improvement. It has a more vertical design which fits better in my kitchen. The price was certainly right. I assume you pay more for the ones sitting on a base which is plugged in. I chose this model specially because I didn't want a base. This one I plug and unplug as needed which fits my use better. The cord detaches so it's easy to remove when the water boils. And is this one ever faster to boil than my last one! I use it with my French press which I often forget to clean between use. The water is usually boiling before I finish cleaning and filling with fresh coffee. And this one has an auto shut off which is a must. My last didn't have it. Combined with its slow-to-boil I often returned to find it dangerously empty. This one, it saves me from myself. The only thing preventing the fourth star is, I wonder how long this one will last? I have hard water so that might speed it's demise. Time will tell but for now this suits my needs well.
Decent, few frills electric kettle
March 19, 2014
We use our electric kettle 1-2 times a day to heat water to warm up the kids' lunch thermoses and to make tea. I've had this kettle for a couple of weeks. It's replacing a cheap plastic model from West Bend that died on us after 15 years of use. This is a very good buy for the cost. I gave it four stars because there are a couple of things that aren't perfect, but could have been better.Pros:The removable cord is great. My old kettle lacked this, which meant the plug sometime got wet when filling it.Small size. I only need 4 cups of hot water at a time (that's the size of my tea pot). This has slightly more capacity than that, but by being smaller than most other electric kettles it isn't overkill, and doesn't take up a lot counter space.Light weight. Those metal ones are pretty, but really heavy! This one is so light I don't worry about accidentally losing my grip and spilling hot water.Speed. This kettle does heat water quickly.Top opens fully. This makes it easy to fill and dump after use (I never leave water standing in the kettle.)Water level is easy to see. This is a nice feature when filling, since you can better judge how much you need. My old kettle didn't do this, and I often ended up with less water than I wanted.Handle stays cool, and no steam hits my hand when I pour. This is a definite improvement over my old kettle.Cons:Noisy. It does make quite a bit of noise when it's on, right from the first moment. It's not really a problem for me, since it's usually in another room when it's on, but I wouldn't want it really close by when it's heating water.Quiet when it finishes. Once it is boiling, it's noticeably quieter, until it actually finishes. I can usually hear the noise of the switch moving when it automatically shuts off, but not always. You do have to stay no more than a room away if you want to catch your water just as it hits boiling. It doesn't cycle on and off. My old kettle did this, which meant that I still had hot water if my tea-making got interrupted by kids or something else. With this one you'll have to actually turn it on again if you get distracted for a few minutes.Slight smell of warm plastic from the machine. I haven't noticed any change in smell or taste to the water, though. The cord is fairly short. If you have a hard time getting to an outlet, you may want something with a longer cord. The top was a bit stiff at first. The first time my husband used it, he didn't even realize you could pull the top all the way to verticle. Yes, you can, but it does stiffen a bit when you get the top to 45 degrees. I now have the hang of using the right amount of force to open it easily, but I could imagine someone either pulling so hard they break it, or being afraid to put enough pressure on the lid to open it all the way.Overall, I'm very pleased with this purchase. We'll see if it lasts 15 years, but in the meantime I'd recommend it to anyone who wants a small, simple kettle that doesn't cost too much.

Ok for the price, missing some simple features
May 29, 2017
Ok for the price, makes pretty good rice, but no notification when it's done, just switches to warming mode and sits there while I space out on the couch ;-) Also, no power switch so it must be unplugged when not in use, my outlet is behind something else, so this is not convenient...
Wobbly - would benefit from 4 legs
March 14, 2017
Wobbly - be very careful when turning on to not tip it over. Cooks rice ok, but not very sturdy. will do for now but expect to replace this one with a more sturdy model whenever I find one.
Works as expected
October 21, 2016
Got my replacement and works as advertised. Have only cooked brown rice and did some tweaks based on searching. Cooked 2 cups brown rice but filled up to 3 cup mark to get an adequate cook. Love that I don't have to monitor while cooking, but it does spit out a lot of steam while cooking with that much water even after rinsing the rice several times. My entire counter was covered in starchy water. Satisfied enough for a 3-star rating.Original review: I received a seemingly good product, but the first use revealed a switch that wouldn't go into Cook mode. I've asked for a replacement. Will update my review when I get it.
Good for 2 adults - Rice and Big pieces of veggies
August 4, 2015
I got this cooker recently to avoid using my pressure cooker which blows the water everywhere over the stove creating a mess. We eat rice almost everyday.I started with 1 CUP rice which is the cup that comes with the cooker. The only thing I am unhappy about is the water/sticky residue boiling over and forming a skin like coat around the rim. I washed the rice 3 times before putting it in.But I am impressed with the speed at which it finishes cooking. Best for a 2 adult household. I have tried 2 cups of rice as well. I am afraid to attempt 3 cup RICE though the full capacity because I think it will overflow. The holes on the steamer are quite big so only bigger pieces of veggies can be steamed.
A 3.5 star rice cooker that performs solidly but has some drawbacks
July 28, 2015
If I could, I'd give this thing 3.5 stars. This is a great little rice cooker. It's a workhorse, and that's fantastic. The downside is that unless you have the steamer tray in it, it boils over something fierce, and you're left with sticky gross rice starch all over the counter. I rinse my rice twice, I don't overfill the water, I use their measuring cup, but I still have boil over without the tray, and sometimes even with the tray if there's nothing in it. I've started leaving the rice cooker on the counter in a pyrex baking dish to catch the water, but it's still kind of gross to clean up. I really like the thing despite this, however, and it really does cook well, and it's much easier to clean than the sort with an attached/hinged lid. I'm going to keep looking for tricks to prevent the spill over, but even still, we're going to use this little beast until it dies.
You have to unplug this to turn it off
June 23, 2014
Yes the warming feature is nice, however it stays on and on and on which eventually becomes dangerous. So you have to unplug the device entirely when you're done with it. We use rice at least 2-5 times a week. So i wish i'd gotten one with an automatic turn off instead. But it cooks perfectly every time. Easy cleanup and small profile for our counter.

July 12, 2017
This product was bought as an add on to my Rice cooker. The plastic used seems to be too thin.I have one already which I have been using for many years and this one is not as sturdy. The holes at thebottom does not really make the rice wash any better. With the bottom sealed, you can really immerse the rice inthe water and get all the debris out. Then the slotted spout will drain the water. Not very happy with this item, but it does a satisfactory job.
Sort of helpful
April 22, 2017
I usually just throw the rice in there and let me spray tap run for a while to wash the rice out instead of using my hands to scrub the rice. The reason is because the rice gets stuck at the bottom in the holes and really hurts because they all stick up. Don't know if that makes sense - all add a photo next time I use to explain better.
Good product but rice grains do become trapped in the spout.
April 6, 2017
It does the job. The small holes in the bottom drain slowly and even after allowing the rice to sit for a minute there will be some water left. I wish the feet were taller to hold it a little higher off the sink. The larger slots in the spout are the perfect size to trap rice grains and that's an annoying flaw.Update. Downgraded to 3 stars. My enthusiasm wore off over time after poking rice grains out of the holes. Now I use a mesh strainer which works perfectly and is much faster.
Great price BUT ...
October 12, 2016
This is a huge rice washer. Expect it to be very oversized. I do like it's ability to drain water from the wash without losing the rice BUT the side for pouring the washed rice into a cooking pot has slightly larger drain slits and the rice gets stuck in there and isn't easy to get out. So I feel that sort of defeats the convenience that the rice washer. I will continue to use it, but I'll have to figure out a different way to transfer the finished product.
Not sure it's needed much
May 4, 2014
I have always washed my rice in the rice cooker bowl. Thought that this might help get the last bit of excess starch out, convinced that I do leave some starch at the bottom when I normally just tilt the pot over to drain the water. Here's the problem. The holes drain water so quickly that I can't get the rice swirling in water for a proper wash. This ends up using more water than my usual method, with no noticeable improvement. Now if you cook your rice on the stove, and want to wash your rice and get out all the water before adding a measured amount, then I think that this is useful. Otherwise just wash in the rice cooker bowl and fill water to the correct line.
No Side Vents.
December 12, 2013
The description is deceptive in more ways than one. Others have pointed out its origin not in Japan but in China. There are no "side vents," too, apart from a row at the very top of the bowl. The strainer I've used for years is actually faster for washing rice. This might work for berry-washing, if one needs another colander.

Very useful if you are literally in prison.
March 10, 2017
The cord is not long enough, it shuts itself off as soon as the water barely reaches boiling temperature (except when it doesn't-- I used the item 5 or 6 times just to clean it before use; sometimes the auto-off feature worked and sometimes it did not) and it takes much longer to boil water than expected. Unless you are in a dorm room or prison cell where you can not access a microwave or stovetop, this item is useless. I returned it.
Cord Dislodges Too Easily
May 23, 2016
This kettle heats the water just fine--IF the cord stays in place. There are times when I fill the kettle, make sure the cord is in and turn it on and carry on doing other things while waiting for the water to boil, only to find that somehow the cord has come loose and turned the kettle off. The cord seems not to attach securely. Proctor Silex makes another version of this that has an attached cord--I'd recommend that one instead. I thought that was what I was buying to replace my old one, which I'd ruined the element in by putting in fresh, cool water while the kettle was still hot-Please be careful not to do that!
Boils water quickly, however...
March 26, 2016
I have had this electric kettle now for three months and there are pros and cons to this little kettle. The pros first…PROS: What I like about this kettle is that it boils the water quickly and takes up little space on my counter. I can get three generous size cups of tea with this filled to the top or four eight ounce cups. It also has an automatic shut off so I can leave the room and not worry about anything boiling over or burning.CONS: Even though I knew I would have to unplug it to take it from the counter to the table to pour the water into cups, I did not realize that the cord was so short that I would have to unplug it to have to pour the water into cups almost next to the kettle. This is a nuisance to have to unplug it and plug it back in constantly. Additionally, there are black spots forming on the heating coils on the inside of the unit where the water boils.Overall, this is an okay electric kettle. In my opinion it would be good for someone just starting out, however if you use hot water frequently, I would look for an electric kettle with more features and one that you do not have to keep unplugging and plugging in to use.
Not what I expected
February 18, 2016
This pot does not have a separate base, which is what I'm accustomed to for water boilers. The electrical cord connects directly to the pot. I therefore, for safety reasons, unplug the cord every time I fill it with water. With a separate base, only the base has the cord and you can fill the pot up without this concern. The heating coil is exposed in the bottom of the pot. I expect that it will get covered with mineral deposits over time, and will be difficult to clean. The pot does boil water, and relatively quickly, but I will be buying another pot with a separate base, as I believe it is safer and more functional.
Small, inexpensive kettle - works great!
December 23, 2015
Pro: this kettle quickly heats water to boiling.Con: this kettle does not hold much water.Pro: this kettle is inexpensive.Con: you get what you pay for. The cord easily becomes disconnected from the kettle. The lid of the kettle is not properly aligned to the kettle opening, so it does not close completely. The edge of the kettle lid is rough, like non-sanded wood.I bought this kettle to replace my old one whose thermal coil had become "crusty", for lack of a better term. The instructions for this kettle mentioned how to clean the thermal coils. I followed those instructions on my old kettle and voila! my old kettle looked brand new! I use the old kettle at work, where I don't have access to hot water or a microwave. I use this new kettle at home.
This is a perfect electric kettle, UNTIL.
May 30, 2015
Absolutely perfect electric kettle, heats water quickly, can see what it's doing, BUT...when it ages, and it's time for the junkyard, the Proctor Silex K2070YA won't shut off, continues to heat, and is a fire hazard! I should know, I've had 2 of them; both did the same thing. You know the old adage, fool me once, shame on you, fool me twice, shame on me! I'm not giving the company a third chance. You'd think they would have fixed the problem by now, because it is such a good kettle, but go ahead and buy it and keep an eye on it. It lasts for a couple of years, but as soon as it starts to go, toss it, or you're playing Russian roulette with your kitchen, your house maybe! Not worth the chance at that point.

Works, kind of. Pay more for a different model.
August 13, 2017
We've burnt our rice the three times we've tried to use this (but oddly never burn it the old fashioned way on a stovetop). The most recent time we used it we started smelling rubber burning right when we turned the unit on. Pretty cheap craftsmanship, but then again this was an affordable unit. I would probably pay more and get a nicer one next time.
NOT 6 cups
May 10, 2017
It is 6 of the cups that the manufacturer provides which is NOT the same volume measurement as 1 cup, and it is smaller. It is extremely small and the inside markings only go up to 3 cups - no idea what the issue is with that. The box has an asterisk indicating the weight of a cup is 5.3 ounces as though everyone knows how much volume that is (which is less than 1 cup)
I just threw it in the trash
April 15, 2017
I used this twice and it made a complete mess. Even on the smallest quantity. Boils over all over the cooker and cabinet and rice not that hood.
Cooks too hot....and burns bottom every time!
January 14, 2017
We had the older model that eventually gave up. It was great! So, we ordered a new one. This one cooks rice too hot. Rice burns on the bottom of the pan, every time. We are meticulous about measuring for each type of rice that we make....and still it cooks too hot and burns the rice at the bottom of the pan. DO NOT BUY.
After using this product intermittently, it failed to turn ...
July 1, 2016
After using this product intermittently, it failed to turn on after two years of use. A very affordable model but now I have a sense of guilt about throwing it out. Why do companies make appliances that fail only to force you to participate in planned obsolescence? I do NOT plan to replace my current model with an Oster.
Barely works
June 3, 2016
My old rice cooker stopped working, a burned fuse or something. So I decided to buy a new one. Except to say that it is working would be an overstatement - after I turn it on, after 5 minutes it turns off. None of the rice has been cooked. I cannot turn it back on until the unit has cooled off, which takes anywhere between 5 to 20 minutes. Rinse and repeat until it actually ends up cooking fully. What normally takes mere 20 minutes turns into an hour long endeavor.

Waste of money
June 1, 2017
I did not like this. I frequently make rice. I used it twice before giving up on it.There are two problems. It is white so it makes it more difficult than necessary to tell when it is done. Also, rice gets caught in the holes. While rice does not escape while washing, you waste time trying to get it out afterwards.
Doesn't get used for rice...My wife uses it to hold things on the counter.
December 24, 2016
My wife is asian, we cook a lot of rice and I thought she would like this. However, I found it difficult to use for washing rice, grains stick in the grooves and it's no better than simply washing the rice in water in the rice cooker bowl a couple times. Also, this uses running water, not a good purchase for me in California in a drought.
Not as useful as I thought it would be.
November 24, 2016
This bowl is much too big for my needs - I only rinse 1-1.5 cups of rice at a time. Also, the water doesn't drain completely out of the bottom, so I'd have to pour it through a strainer anyway, and the rice would fall out because the bowl is so much bigger than my strainer. I used this once and went back to just rinsing rice in a small bowl and pouring it out through a strainer.
Works but NOT as shown.
September 14, 2016
The item I received does not have the slots around the bottom edge as the picture shows. Mine has only pinholes in the bottom which allows water to drain as a light shower, adequate but will take longer to wash a large quantity of rice. By the handle (orange dot) is where some slots are located but who in the world swishes their rice that far up??? Clarify with the seller BEFORE you buy.
Rice gets stuck in holes
March 8, 2016
It does the job but considering its made to put rice in I would expect it to be designed so grains of rice don't get stuck in the holes on the bottom and at the spout. You have to use your hands to push the rice through in order to get it un-stuck.
Brittle Plastic - Breaks Easily
January 23, 2014
I noticed several other people commenting on how easy this item breaks. I purchased this along with a Rice Cooker. The order was fulfilled by Amazon. The shipping box was in perfect condition on the outside, but inside - the Rice Cooker (in its retail box) and this item (in a type of plastic bag) apparently got into an argument during the trip and the bowl was a mess, i.e. broken shards of brittle plastic. When you examine the bowl, you can see how brittle the plastic is so that is a legitimate concern if you are buying this bowl. Throw in a shipping box with a much heavier item and it bounced around enough to break it into pieces. The real joke is: to get my refund I have to return (shipping paid for by Amazon). Expensive return for Amazon to pay for, but only way to get my money.EDITED: January 24, 2014 -- I took the package to the local UPS Store (early evening, January 23rd) to ship back to Amazon in order to get my refund. I got an EMAIL around 9:30 p.m. that my purchase price was being refunded. Not sure how they do refunds, but obviously the package didn't get all the way back to the shipping destination before they processed the refund. Oh well - maybe I will order another one - just this time all by itself so it is not packed with anything else that could possibly break it!

Once a great kettle, not so much now.
February 9, 2017
The quality has really gone down on this little pot. We have two at home that are several years old and work like a charm, so getting another for my office seemed like a no-brainer. The cord is now half the length of the older pots', and the quality of the pot itself has really taken a dive. Even after the two preliminary boils, it still has a strong plastic smell, and it seems really cheaply made--the edge of the lid isn't smooth, and it also doesn't close completely without some effort. If I could find another one of these kettles that's about 5 years old, I'd be overjoyed, but this one's getting returned.
Great until it stopped working.
December 15, 2015
Updating my review from 5 stars to 2 stars. It broke after less than 2 months of casual use. I use it probably 3-4 days a week to make a cup or 2 of coffee with my aeropress. So I turn it on twice a day 3-4 days a week. It worked incredibly well while it did work, but now when I turn on the switch it doesn't do anything but light up the "on" button. It usually makes a sound the moment you flip the switch to on, now it makes no sound and doesn't boil water. Very sad because the price and reviews made it seem like a decent item. You may have better results than I did, but breaking after 2 months of casual use, I do not plan to buy another one from this brand. At least I have something to add to my christmas list now.
OK, but...
July 15, 2015
Loved it at first...Got mine for using 2-3 times a day for tea, and it burned-out in less than a month.bad switch on the top, got new at auction, so no chance of refund, took progressively longer to boil as it aged, and on one occasion, I fell-asleep and it boiled dry, but some safety on it did shut it off prior to an emergency. My Mom's has lasted for years, hence the reason I got mine.Update: Bought new one auto shut-off has worked flawlessly.Update** ALWAYS remove the plug from the wall, these things have minds of their own, came home from work to a smoke-filled house, with my dog trying to dig through the front door.......DANGEROUS!!! (this is the "New " one too..)
Would not buy again.
July 27, 2014
I will start with the CONS first as they are important.1. The most important factor is a safety issue: the kettle will auto shut off and you will think it's off, but 20 minutes or 45 or 3 hours later it will randomly turn itself back on. It does this every time it's used. I thought it must be our socket, so I tried other sockets and when it still did it, I brought it into work and it did it there to. Obviously this is a fluke and may only be my one kettle, but be aware. It does cycle off again, but do not leave it plugged in when you are not close to it.2. The plug is ridiculously short and hard to unplug, so when you go to unplug it, you have to make sure all the water is out of it because you have to pull hard and the water in the pot will go flying out at your face. Because of CON one, unplugging immediately after using, this means the kettle will still be hot. Be careful here.3. If you have any kind of water issues, it will crust up on the element and flake off in the water- so you have to descale this by scrubbing with vinegar often- depending on your level of hard water. We have very hard water and if I don't scrub it out every week, I end up with tons of white flaky bits in my tea and coffee.4. Although it does have the auto shut off, some times it shuts off right before it reaches boiling because it only stays on five minutes at a time and if the pot is full it will shut off before that.PROS:1. No whistling. While it does make a rattling sound as it boils, there is no whistle so the baby/sleeping spouse won't wake up2. Auto shut off.3. Fairly fast. You can boil enough water for 2 cups of coffee in about 3 minutes. More water takes longer and may never boil (before shutting off), BUT this is not necessarily a bad thing if you temp test for your coffee. It's usually about 190 when it shuts off (full pot) which is almost perfect for the french press. It's inexpensive, it's easy to use and it does the job it's supposed to, so it gets 2 stars. It has some safety issues that are not present in other kettles, but some of them are simply due to the fact that you are dealing with with boiling hard water, so I deducted 2 stars for that.I went back and forth debating if this should get 2 stars or 3 and in the end asked myself if I would replace it with the same kettle and the answer should be obvious- Not with these safety issues. I wanted the star count to reflect that. It's not OK.
cheap junk that we used to hate about overseas products years ago
July 17, 2014
Aside from being WOEFULLY underpowered for an electric kettle (1000 watts) and taking WAY too long to bring water to a boil, I have now had TWO of these fail on me so far....there's a problem with the kettle's power prongs fitting securely with the kettle end of the power cord. After some time they stop making proper contact, causing you to have to press the plug into the base of the kettle extra hard, which of course over a few weeks makes for an even LOOSER contact until it just won't stay on. At this point you have to spread the prongs on the base of the kettle to make a solid connection, which inevitably continues to fail until the plug just won't stay in the base on it's own anymore. Proctor-Silex knows full well the problem hence the price. Typical Americans we are, we've become accustomed to the low cost, cheap junk that we used to hate about overseas products years ago, you know, when WE were a manufacturing nation that took pride in our workmanship. So sad. My old Braun (1500 watts) lasted ten abusive years and boiled water as fast as you could put it in! I went thru TWO of these in under 6 months. Not such a bargain for $9. At this rate of failure, $36/year? Even at HALF that, it sucks!
too noisy and small
April 14, 2014
I bought this to avoid trips across the office to get hot water for tea. At first, I sort of liked this product, although it took a while for the plastic/chemical taste to dissipate. However, filling it up w/ filtered water from the refrigerator took a long time. This wasn't a product problem really, but added to my irritation. What bothered me about this product was that it is very loud as it boils water. It was amusing at first to me and my neighbors because it sounded like an airplane taking off, but then it just got irritating. In my office cube, it really is annoyingly loud. The size only seems to give me possibly 3 or 4 cups of tea, and I drink tea non-stop all day. So, I have to fill it up more than once a day. But, more irritating that that, is it doesn't keep the water hot very long, so I will re-heat the same water one or two times before I have to refill it. This wouldn't be a problem, if this thing wasn't so loud. It bothered me so much, I stopped using it. I've been walking across the office getting tea again, but today I decided to buy a thermos. I can fill it up once w/ hot water and it will stay hot without all the noise and hassle. For these reasons, I rate the product a 2, but as far as warming hot water, it does a good job. It is just too loud and doesn't keep the water hot enough for long enough. Additionally, the metal coil at the bottom starts to get discolored w/ something black. I'm not sure what it is, maybe mold or corrosion, but it's very hard to get off even by scrubbing. Not sure if it's a health issue. Not thrilled with the product.

WASTE OF MONEY!!!
October 1, 2017
I want to return this, it is terrible it keeps turning itself off before the rice is done, I have to turn it back on 3 times in order to get the rice to finish cooking. I also did not know I would be stuck with it, I bought this 45 days ago, I just tried using it 2 days ago for the second time and what a wasteI will not buy the replacement from amazon, Walmart here I come.
What a disappointment!
August 28, 2017
I finally used the rice cooker. It made a horrible mess by sputtering water all over the counter and down the pot itself, took longer to cook the rice than the normal way and not only that turned the rice into mush. It looked more like overcooked oatmeal.I don't know what I did wrong if any thing. But boy, do I have a mess in the kitchen to clean up.
Junk!
July 4, 2017
This isn't really a steamer. It just boils the rice and even though I put far less water and rice in it that it is purportedly made for, it boils over. You are better off just making your rice in a pot on the stove. At least there you can control the temperature. I have used rice steamers before and this is horrible.

Didn't measure up
August 10, 2015
I was expecting to have fail safe fluffy rice and not have to worry about spill overs or undercooked rice. So I was excited to purchase the rice steamer. When preparing the rice (as instructed), I found after several tries and with different measurements the rice didn't cook evenly and it scorched on the bottom. YIKES!! I can cook lousy rice without the steamer... so I decided to return it and I'm still on the hunt for a reliable unit.

The only thing I can say is that it was shipped very quickly, however the bowl was just thrown in the box amidst other items, it was in a self container box or anything which may explain why it was broken.

Electrical current problem
May 23, 2017
I gave this kettle to my mother in law. She has had it for a few months now. The plug will not stay connected to pot correctly. It must be moved around or "jimmied" to keep cord in and electricity flowing. I try to raise the cord to a height where a group of sticky notes is high enough to connection going. She uses pot once a day. Otherwise I like this little kettle. Unfortunately the 30 day time period has passed. And I cannot even secure masking tape to keep it correctly in a spot for current to go through.
Heating element corroded, Lid broken. DO NOT USE!
February 27, 2017
I have had this kettle for 5 or 6 months now, and use it at work about once a day on average. The heating element is a metal coil that sits in the water, fully exposed. I was suspicious of this at first, but decided to give it a try. It is now extremely corroded, and leaves visibly large metal flecks in the water. The lid also jams. It neither opens nor closes properly.Overall this is a low-quality product, and I do not trust it. I would recommend spending $10 more on a higher quality, reliable kettle.
Not happy
November 27, 2016
I miss my 2 Liter Hamilton Beach kettle. This 1 liter does not have an electrical base where the kettle sits on the base. Instead, the electrical cord attaches directly to the bottom of the kettle, so that when you pick your kettle up to pour the water, the cord detaches. The cord is extremely short, and by the time you pick the kettle up, it pulls the cord out. My larger kettle sat on the electrical base, and was separate, so you could pick it up and move it about as you wish, then simply place it back on its base, ready to boil the next time, without having to play with the cord each time.
Coil's coating flakes off into your water!
September 25, 2015
I thought I would like this. And I did... until the black (rubber? plastic? metal? or?) coating on the metal heating coil began to flake off into the water. I probably drank a bunch of it before the few flakes became like black snow in the water, and I had to discard. One star is for the customer service rep who said it was under warranty and they would send me one with a heating unit that is not open to the water, if I paid the difference in price plus shipping.
Love(d) This Kettle!... but it didn't last
December 13, 2013
I should deduct two stars because this plastic, and oh, how I hate plastic. But I just can't do it. The kettle is a dream. It heats to a bubbly boil superquick, faster than on the stove or in the microwave. As much as I hate plastic, I didn't experience any odor or taste as some others have. The water level is clear to read and the design makes it comfortable to pick up and pour.I was walking the dog one day and momentarily panicked that I might have left the kettle on... but no matter, since it shuts itself off after boiling. What a great feature! There's no ear-piercing whistle as with a regular tea kettle, just hot water whenever I need it.The price is so right, too. I bought it for my office a few weeks ago but haven't taken it to work yet because I can't bear to part with it. I'm getting another one.REVISION, 5 stars to 1 star: After 10 months with no more than twice a week use, the kettle failed to function -- no power, no heat -- big disappointment.
Cheaplyt made and Difficult to Safely Use
February 9, 2013
I paid $10 for this item and it isn't worth it. The cord is too short (22"), if you attempt to pour too fast, boiling water spills out of the top and scalds your hand. It is cheaply made and sometimes it does not shut off at all (supposed to shut off automatically when water boils). Top cover is cheap plastic and hard to open..know it will break within a year. Product was scratched and somewhat dirty (black stains and marks on exterior) and appeared reconditioned...but for $10.00, I'll use it til it breaks. Would not recommend or purchase again.UPDATE: Have had for three months and have to buy another, no longer shuts off and sometimes will not turn on until lever is depressed several times, afraid of shorting/electrical issue.
