Five Star Reviews: | 61% monster trimmer September 26, 2017 This is a serious trimmer. I installed the grass Gator 4680 Brush Cutter Extra Heavy Duty Replacement Trimmer Head, yes it does fit, and it makes this thing an unstoppable weed and brush cutter. I am including a couple of pictures of a 4 wheeler trail I made, not cleaned up, MADE, with this combo, through Chokecherry bushes, wild roses and other under brush, including trimming the pine trees and still had power left in the battery. Photos are un-retouched and no embellishments. trimmer runs about 30 to 40 minutes with this cutting head installed I haven't used it with the line spool so I have no idea how long it will run as it comes stock. My husband really didn't like to drag the cord around on the electric toro September 15, 2017 My husband really didn't like to drag the cord around on the electric toro. Don't doubt me for a moment, the Toro was an excellent machine if you didn't mind dragging the cord around but the dewalt cordless weed wacker made it ENJOYABLE for that cumbersome task. We loaned it to our neighbor & she was smitten with it...she said she had to get one of those ...so we bought her one. Wouldn't you know it she was happy as a clam 😎 Back Saver! September 7, 2017 What a great time saver and back saver. The battery lasts as long as I do (about 20 minutes). If I run into some long tough-to-cut stuff, I slide the button to high power and it cuts like my gas trimmer. I used to wear myself out trying to keep my gas trimmer started and running but now I just squeeze the trigger throttle and it's ready to cut! Big battery with same socket configuration as my battery-powered drill. Great Tool July 2, 2017 I bought the bare tool because I already had several 20V batteries from other DeWalt tools. The 1.5 ah battery ran down after about 40 minutes of cutting tall grass on the "high" setting. The instructions recommend using the "low" setting to make the battery last but the tool doesn't cut as well in tall grass and tends twist the grass around the spool and jam up. I saw the 20/60V Flexvolt 6.0 ah batteries on sale so I bought a pair. This is the answer! With the tool on the "high" setting I can cut heavy grass and weeds like star thistle until I'm worn out without running the battery down. Don't be afraid to let out more string when the cutting action falls off. Cutting takes place at the tip of the string and the longer the string is the faster it is moving so it cuts better. I've used gas powered weed whackers for years but they are very loud and there is the whole mixing gas and and filling the tank business. This tool is easier and much quieter. Good buy happy with the 20W June 9, 2017 I started with a wired electric weed wacker and switched to gas for the portability, it died a year later but I had sold the electric one at a yard sale. I bought a new more expensive gas one that lasted 4 years, then died. I then bought a $30 corded one on amazon and it was fine except the string feed required too much work to open and manually advance. The cord was no terrible but not pleasant either. Finally we saw the 40V Dewalt at the store - it was too expensive, too heavy and too long - even without the battery the weight was a problem. I use the 20V already for drills and the leaf blower, so this was a no brainer. On first use I tried running the battery down - after 15 minutes of edging I was still at 3 bars, so I decided to mow the lawn with just the string trimmer for another 10 minutes, our grass is just 20 by 80 - was able to do sweep of the entire yard and buy myself a week before "really" mowing with our fiskar manual mower and leave it at 2/3 battery. I don't trust the indicator - so let's call it 1/2 battery since I probably couldn't do 25 minutes twice on this guy. I used low the entire time.I do plan on following the manf. instruction to remove the battery when not in use and when working on the string - the trigger is easier to accidentally push because there is no plastic shield around it. I wish the shield was a little bigger at the base, but I wear goggles so not a huge issue. Assembly was a breeze. If you don't already have the leaf blower look around to see if you get a one battery - two device set. Glad I purchased it for my yard work May 26, 2017 This trimmer works well to get at the large and small yard work jobs. Glad I purchased it for my yard work. Great to go Green with something durable. | 69% There are no reviews yet | 0% There are no reviews yet | 0% There are no reviews yet | 0% There are no reviews yet |
Four Star Reviews: | 13% Heavy motor difficult to hold November 12, 2017 I just received and have not used yet but first impression is that the head is very heavy. The motor is at the tip of the shaft. I assumed it would be at the handle and a torque shaft would deliver power to the head. Bought because I have back problems and thought it would be easier than a straight shaft Stihl. I also have a lot of 20v dewalt tools and batteries which makes sense because I don't need to buy battery but should have done more research on it. Wish the motor was at the handle but will probably still use since I have a very small area to trim. Give 4 stars because all dewalt tools are great and this will probably work fine but wish was lighter at the head of trimmer. Better than expected! September 18, 2017 I bought this with reservation. I have always used Stihl equipment, but now that I am older, I wanted to try something lighter. I used the trimmer yesterday for the first time. It is much lighter, cleaner, and I don't have to mix the gas. As expected, the Stihl still has more power, but I was very satisfied with the output of the Dewalt trimmer. I think I am on to something. Maybe a Dewalt blower is in my future. Lightweight and adequate to most uses. March 18, 2017 Although this unit does not have the power of some lighter weed eaters, it fulfills my needs to a large degree. I have several other 20v tools so when I get ready to use this, I usually get 2-3 batteries in chargers for reserve. The batteries give out about the same time as I do...... Nice Trimmer!! October 30, 2016 This is a great Light Trimmer. You can use with a 1 amp batt. but only last around 15 minutes. I have (2) 1 amps so I can work for around 30 min. I do not need more than that with a 1/2 acre. I Will invest in 5 amps soon so i can expand with other larger tools. All and all great trimmer. If you turn to edge, certain angle, the string will get clogged and you will have undo. ... because many people said battery operated ones are no good. This thing worked perfectly August 21, 2016 We were very nervous about getting this weed eater because many people said battery operated ones are no good. This thing worked perfectly. It is light and easy to use and not having to mix and pour gas into it was fantastic. The only downside to this was that it did not take the DeWalt batteries that we already had for other tools. We had to purchase a different sized batteries for it. Other than that, it works fine. We've had it about a month now and have no complaints. My favorite weed whacker ever! July 16, 2016 So far, this is my favorite weed whacker ever. I've had b&d, makita, and many others and this is by far the best. Easy to start, plenty of power, great angle for trimming and edging, long battery use. All good. I would have given it five stars but the battery in the first one I got wouldn't hold a charge after 3 weeks. Amazon sent a new one and no problems at all so far with this battery. | 15% There are no reviews yet | 0% There are no reviews yet | 0% There are no reviews yet | 0% There are no reviews yet |
Three Star Reviews: | 7% bad design overall November 11, 2017 I bought this to replace a Worx trimmer. My property is small 300-1000 linear feet of edging. It was heavy. Where the 2 piece shaft attached there were 3 screws, if you hit it accidentally it would cut you, bad design overall, heavy, too powerful. Eats battery life on high. Like a circular saw for weeds-over kill.No real protection when ripping weeds.I have other De Walt tools on the 20 battery. This one won't be in my garage. gave it to charity. Battery Stamina Hurts Performance August 20, 2017 While I love Dewalt and all their tools, this items comes up short mainly for the amount of fun-time from each battery. It drains quickly when on High, and while Low gives more time, the power suffers. If you have a small flower bed or garden, or unique grass situation, this would be perfect. But for tackling a regular house lawn weekly, you will be frustrated.I do love the easy of use. Just need more stamina from batteries. A good alternative to gas. May 14, 2017 I live out in the country, so I come across some thick branch weeds at times. I had not trimmed my yard in about 2-3 weeks. So when I got this, I decided to give it a good test. I had a variation of thick branches and thin areas, tall grass, etc.I bought this with the standard DeWalt cord, I have plenty of 20v batteries, I recommend using 4.0AH or 5.0AH batteries on this, they last a long time. The machine does get bogged down from time to time, but if you cut a little slower when it does, it will pick itself back up. So far I have had no issues with it, it has not jerked on cutting near fencing, which I have noticed some weed eaters tend to do.Someone mentioned getting shot in the face. This hasn't been an issue at all for me. You occasionally get a piece to the face, but anyone who's used any weed eater knows, sometimes, you get shot in the face. This, isn't like cutting metal with a circular saw.Ultimately, I think the convenience of simply plugging in a battery is better than pouring gas, getting 2-stroke, pumping a bubble and pulling a cord... several times. Great for light to medium duty jobs, but I expected it would be more powerful. August 28, 2016 This trimmer works well is handy to use and looks great. My only issue is that it doesn't have the same power as my old plug in one. It works fine trimming my suburban yard, but I don't think it would work nearly as well on heavier-duty jobs. For the money I expected more power. I can live with the limitations but of bigger disappointment has been the poor reliability August 17, 2016 This thing is okay, mediocre. It has two speed ranges and even on high it struggles to cut tough grass with a thick stem. I can live with the limitations but of bigger disappointment has been the poor reliability. It broke down after about a dozen uses (and no, the problem was not the battery) and in order to get it fixed I had to drive 25 miles each way to drop it at a service center, and I live in the Los Angles area so you'd think there would be some place closer. Got it back after about 5 weeks and it's working again now. They got the Hi and Low ranges switched but I'll live with that. When this thing croaks I'll spring for a Makita 4 cycle gas trimmer. Works great as a trimmer; challenging as an edger July 9, 2016 I have St. Augustine grass. On low, it works fine as a trimmer along the house. I can finish the front yard with a 2.0Ah battery that I use for my 3+ other Dewalt tools. I use two of them to trim the whole house. But when it comes to edging, the St Augustine generally wins. The "smart" throttling of the motor doesn't recognize that I need 100% power to edge it - only when I come across a thick patch does it activate to 100%. This was done on HIGH. The feature is pretty cool, but you'd think HIGH means 100% power, and perhaps low is "smart mode", like the ECO button on the newer cars.Even if that issue was fixed, the second biggest issue was the balance. The overall weight is lighter than most gas and plug-in edgers, but this one is head-heavy and I got tired of it really quickly.I had to return it and went back to my trust power-cord cheap-o edger/trimmer. I'll wait for Dewalt's third attempt and see what they produce with FlexVolt system. | 5% There are no reviews yet | 0% There are no reviews yet | 0% There are no reviews yet | 0% There are no reviews yet |
Two Star Reviews: | 7% Battery doesn't last August 21, 2017 Bought 10 months ago and used only during summer, batter doesn't last and won't hold a charge. Poor quality for the price paid in my opinion. Terrible battery life July 16, 2017 If you only have 5 minutes worth of weed whacking to do, this is the tool for you. But if you have more than about a 10 foot yard, don't buy this weed trimmer. Battery only lasts about 3 to 5 minutes. Not very much power. I'm going to have to try and find a bigger battery now. The standard size battery doesn't cut it. Not an easy trimmer to rewind June 14, 2017 The string constantly breaks. When the strings breaks the trimmer has to be rewound every time. Not an easy trimmer to rewind. I really wanted the product to work, but it did not, Too late to get my money back. Was pretty darn happy with it for about six month of ... April 12, 2017 Was pretty darn happy with it for about six month of modest use until, like another reviewer, motor would not go beyond low speed.Shortly thereafter, motor froze completely. (I think a motor magnet cracked or broke and seized it up.)Took it to local DeWalt service location and after they failed replace the motor they are sending it to Dewalt.(Something about difficulty in getting new motor wired to harness that goes up the shaft to control unit.)So far, I'm without a trimmer for 4 weeks now. So, three stars off for bad reliability, repairability, and service experience.ProTip: If yours breaks, ship it directly to DeWalt for warranty service. Worked well for about a year then quit. September 15, 2016 Worked well for about a year. After its most recent use it quit working. I have a approx 8000sqft yard. I used this weedeater about 4x/month during yard cutting season, starting June 1 of 2015. At this point September 15, 2016 it has seen less than 100 uses of approximately 30min each and is no longer working. In the 2 weeks I had a way to charge the batter trimmer itself was good. VERY unhappy with Dewalt customer service August 20, 2016 Charger failed after 2 weeks. 3 Months later and I still fighting with Dewalt to get replacement. I will not buy another charger when this should be covered by warranty! I should have returned to Amazon when I had the chance. In the 2 weeks I had a way to charge the batter trimmer itself was good. VERY unhappy with Dewalt customer service. | 4% There are no reviews yet | 0% There are no reviews yet | 0% There are no reviews yet | 0% There are no reviews yet |
One Star Reviews: | 12% Unless you have a tiny yard with very little weed ... July 17, 2017 Unless you have a tiny yard with very little weed eating to do, do not purchase this product. In low mode, you will go through the battery in about ten minutes. The trimming string goes about as fast as the battery life. Not impressed. I told myself I couldn't go wrong purchasing a Dewalt, but I was wrong. I ordered this on March 8 2016 and I have ... July 2, 2017 I ordered this on March 8 2016 and I have used it maybe 8 times max. Have charged it twice. I round up my fences and rarely use the trimmer but today its stuck in low gear. Have been doing some research and seems this has been a common problem. Reaching out to Dewalt and hoping for some help. This is not normal for a Dewalt product. Not the usual DEWALT reliability at all May 2, 2017 Big dewalt fan but this is through and through a piece of garbage. I've only used it about six times on a 1/4 acre area (driveway / sidewalk / flower beds) and it just seized up to the point that the motor wasn't turning fast enough to cut a blade of grass. To top it off the 2nd time I sent it in for warranty repair they CHARGED me $50+!! The explanation is that it is a 3 year cost control warranty - not actually a 3 year guarantee. It's a disappointment. October 12, 2016 This trimmer died just 10 months into my ownership. It's a disappointment. Defective Product unless you don't mind stones and crap all over you. August 17, 2016 They must have a large marketing department paying people to write all the positive reviews. How can you write a positive review of a trimmer that throws stuff in your face on a continuous basis. It effectively has no guard at all. The diameter of the rotating string disc is a larger diameter than the guard over it!!! I still can't believe it. The long piece of guard is meaningless because everything is air borne before it gets that far from the disc. Dewalt should be ashamed of themselves. Apparently, they care nothing about their residential customers. They must have gotten a boatload of these without testing and now have to unload them. I work in construction. The Dewalt commercial group is very sensitive to the professionals that use their tools. I have an electric trimmer from Sears that has worked fine for years and the battery lasts as long. It is not as powerful as this one out of the box but it doesn't throw stones in my face. This is a defective product. Motor burned out after less than 30 minutes before the battery was even drained. June 28, 2016 I have a bunch of other Dewalt 20V MAX power tools, and love them. So I decided to add a trimmer to it. The third time I used it the motor burned out. It's not like I used it for more than a total of 30 minutes. I tried another battery from by Dewalt blower to see if it was a battery issue, but it is not. Now, each time I try to use it, it will work for about 60 to 90 seconds before it slows way down and won't cut anything. I would very much appreciate a replacement with a model with a higher quality motor. I'd even be willing to pay for an upgrade if one even exists. This was such a disappointment after being so pleased with Dewalt's other power tools. | 7% There are no reviews yet | 0% There are no reviews yet | 0% There are no reviews yet | 0% There are no reviews yet |
