IF THERE IS ONLY A SMALL AMOUNT OF DRILLING THAT IS DESIRED THIS IS A HANDY TOOL TO HAVE.. IT IS GOOD ESPECIALLY FOR WOOD I DONT KNOW IF YOU WOULD WANT TO DRILL INTO METAL WITH IT UNLESS IT IS SOFT AND THIN LIKE ALUMINUM OR LEAD WHICH IS THIN . EASIER THAN HAVING TO DRAG OUT A BATTERY POWERED OR 110VOLT ELECTRIC DRILL WITH AN EXTENSION CORD METAL GEARS NOT PLASTIC!

Nice quality hand tool.I bought a "used" one. It came like new, in the original box!Bought it because I needed to do some work near the waterline of our pool.Didn't want to be using the corded or even the (expensive) cordless drill where they might contact the water.

Awesome 4 Jaw Brace
October 19, 2013
Looking at other reviews - it's hard to tell if this is a solid piece of equipment or not.I decided to purchase this - plus the auger bit at the same time and they work awesome.A few things to note: (1) The brace is NOT built to hold standard drill bits, spades or auger bits. (2) This brace is not designed to work with hex shanks (may work - but jaws won't tighten correctly) (3) most big box stores will not carry the correct bits for these type of hand tools. (4) This tool is built to function as a hand tool. The jaw and handle are not designed to be centered to each other. (5) This is not a hand drill (like the ones with a crank). This tool uses auger bits.Taking these points into consideration - if you are looking for a bit/brace - this is a great choice. If you think it will work for any other purpose - please research the tool before you purchase.

Fuller 4-jaw, 12 point rachet brace
October 23, 2012
This tool is well designed and solidly built. Prior to ordering, I was a little concerned about the plastic parts. However, when I actually saw the tool, it was obvious that the type of plastic used was far more durable than wood. I had to replace my former long-used brace because the wood handle split when stored for a period of time in a hot, rental storage building. I foresee this brace lasting for a long, long time.

Small footprint, handy tool
September 27, 2017
Very handy to keep in my craft box. I do not need to use this where I have access to a plug and it is so small it fits well in my craft case. Being bedridden everything needs to be near me so I can reach it. I got a computer lap table with storage and put my craft items inside. This fits very well and we easy for me to use with my limited mobility. Recommend for crafters.
Small, well made and works which is most important. Highly recommend to model builders.
September 16, 2016
This thing is incredible. It has not one but two different mandrels with it as well as several drill bits. It is well made and works great. I built Giant Scale RC aircraft and this little jewel is great for "pilot holes" when needed as well as hard to reach places where I cannot get electric screwdriver anywhere close. Great for small diameter holes for servo screws for example. Highly recommend and was quick delivery. Very happy with this small hand drill.
Great Yankee Drill
June 26, 2015
This Yankee Drill is hard to find, so I was glad it was available through Amazon. It is great to use for small household tasks. I used it to drill holes in wooden Christmas ornaments that I painted. The three extra bits were a good idea as this drill is not designed for heavy work; if you use it for that, the bits bend. I have also ordered a set of extra bits that are an add-on, so I will get them later. Good buy for crafters and hobbiests.

This is a really nifty little tool. I needed a hand drill to make holes in a wooden art box for hinges that have small screws. One type of hand drill you turn the bit yourself. This is a lot easier and good for small screws for wood & jewelry projects. I would recommend this item to others.
Just what I needed
July 23, 2014
I love this drill! It was just what I needed to make small holes for findings into resin jewelry. The drill is easy to use and I like that it came with multiple drill bits. I have been using it for 2 months now with no problems. I would recommend this to any resin jeweler.

A very nice small diameter bit set.
September 15, 2017
When I bought a Black and Decker cordless drill a few years ago, a set of drill bits matching the #15557 was included. As I usually drill smaller diameter holes, these bits were often my first choice, even though I have several other drill bit sets. Through the years this 10 bit set has served me quite well, and I really have nothing bad to say about them. The diameter size ranges from 1/16” to 1/4”. A couple of the smallest sized bits broke, but that is not that unusual with normal use.The rubber holder is convenient and provides easy access, but storing the bits in a hard case would be recommended to help prevent one of the smaller bits from accidentally being broken. The price can fluctuate widely, with $3.88 as an “Add On” item being the lowest I have seen. Even if you do pay a little more, you will probably not be disappointed by the quality and performance of these smaller diameter bits.
Simple yet does the job.

Very pleased with this purchase
January 5, 2016
Very pleased with this purchase. Purchased this to go with my Black and Decker cordless drill (not really sure which model). These power through dry wall, wood, and cement very well. We have not tried on anything else yet. The black part holds each piece in a practical fashion, making it accessible but also keeping them safe. So far we have not lost one yet. The only con is my own fault. I wish I would have purchased some larger drill bits for installing large anchors in the wall. For now, the largest size one has done the trick. Again, that was my own fault. Awesome product.

An Off-The-Grid Essential: Good, Cheap Hand Drill--Even With the Plastic Handles
February 24, 2013
The rating would have been five (5) stars if I was sent the same wooden-handled drills that were advertised. All of the drills we received had plastic handles, with the biggest handle also serving as a bit storage compartment. But it's something about using a wood handled drill to provide that real "vintage" feel and nostalgia. With that said, these cheaper drills work well and will come in handy during a prolonged failure of the electrical grid. The smallest of bits can be held from the three (3) jaws inside the keyless chuck.During a critical incident resulting in the loss of electrical power, if you have battery powered drills you would still need to eventually recharge the drill batteries. If you cannot recharge the batteries, then you cannot use that battery powered drill to do such things as emergency repairs, storm paneling and SIP--Shelter In Place. You will need these types of drills, probably a heavier duty manual "drill" such as Amazon's Robert Larson 10 Inch Swing Bit Brace with 3 Jaw Chuck, and augers.Stay Safe!....Chappy

December 3, 2014
This drill works great for making small holes in tight spaces that a normal power tool might not be able to get at. This is a precision instrument and not meant for heavy duty drilling. Soft materials and small diameter holes are recommended unless you want to be working on it for a while.

If the base of the small bits could have a thicker part for better grip it would be perfect
August 20, 2016
We recently moved into a new home as first-time home owners so we've been doing a lot of DIY such as hanging wall shelving. I bought these after a few projects where drilling took forever and way too much effort. The drill bits really helped and made our remaining projects much easier and much quicker. My main complaint is the size of the base. I use these with a Black and Decker cordless drill but when using the smaller bits, sometimes the drill loses its grip on the base of the bit and it has gotten stuck in the wall a couple times. If the base of the small bits could have a thicker part for better grip it would be perfect.
Nice extension for the B&D Power Screwdriver
January 3, 2015
This is a companion product to the Black & Decker PD600 Pivot Plus 6-Volt Nicad Cordless Screwdriver with Articulating Head. The drill bits allow you to do more with the product and make it an all-around household tool. Like the screwdriver, it is for the homeowner not a professional builder. It makes many household chores easier

cheaply put together
May 20, 2014
be prepared to have to do some work to this item...The Item i recieved had 1 of the gear pinned to the shaft crooked...The shaft is also slightly smaller than the inner dia. of the gear. This allows the gear to slip, making it impossible to drill with.redrill/realign the pin hole and installed a slightly larger pin, and added a shim to tighten the gear on the shaft, now just waiting to see if the cast metal has a decent life.
Delivery service was great, but the product is marginal.
February 10, 2014
Sure, that's a problem when I buy something based on a picture. Buying and delivery was super-easy and the product got here fine. The drill, though is not centered. Any drill bit inserted wobbles in use. It's not straight. I'll still use it, but will go "meh".
Plastic knob on handle broken on arrival
April 28, 2013
As the title says...and as other posters have said....first, the thing is metal and plastic. That doesn't really bother me as much as other people. The knob that I hold to drill is chipped though. It still works but it's more uncomfortable to handle. I got this for only a few bucks, so I'm happy with it and it's too minor of a problem to send back.

It is too stiff to operate the levers to shift between forward and reverse, not to mention it is not at all intuitive which direction it is set to go.More annoying is that it doesn't seem to hold bits as well as I would like.
Am I weak, or is this drill hard to tighten?
February 5, 2011
I am a very amateur carpenter -read my review with this in mind. I was pleased that this drill takes both straight shaft bits and sloping/wedge shaped shafts. BUT I have terrible trouble tightening the drill to hold the bit securely. The bit keeps slipping! Perhaps a strong man can tighten it sufficiently but I, 130 lb. female, cannot. I pine for my old hand drill, which eventually fell apart after long hours of service drilling gate post hinge bolt holes. A chuck would give more tightening power, but chucks seem to be out of fashion in both electric & hand drills.
Brace with a bite
May 23, 2007
I only gave my product review 3 because my particular brace gear / pawl ratchet slips & has a defect.Otherwise4 stars if compared to similiar designs from other companies.5 stars for being the most economical brace combined with good materials.I believe if I had a non-defective brace like this it would be a fully functional economical brace that would last awhile under normal use.Plastic handles is of good quality & will not respond to moisture like wood handles that sometimes crack if not cared for.I dont who to contact for a replacement. I purchased mine here. This brace is plated great & the 4 jaws chuck appears to be hardened & is made of quality metal & tightens well.Inside the chuck there is a square recess made to fit vintage traditional non hex auger bits. The brace didn't work well with hex shank bits.It will grip round bits & older auger bits securely. As always use sharp augers & drill bits for the best performance & ease of use.

December 17, 2016
Just an OK product. I was looking to replace a similar tool my father had in his workshop. This is a poor knockoff of that time-honored hand tool.It does not shut, but always has to be in the extended position. It is small and wobbly when you are using it for its intended purpose -- to drive screws.I guess the disappointment is my fault as I really wanted to like it, but I just can't.If I was in the market again, I'd skip this one for sure.

Doesn't Work
November 25, 2014
We were very excited to buy our oldest daughter (6), who attends a Waldorf school, her own hand drill. I am sad to say that it really doesn't work well. The drill bit hole on the drill does not close together. Two of the three sides close faster than the other, creating an uneven closure, thus making the drill bit wobbly. Unfortunately my husband and I have to help her to use it, which is beyond the whole point of her having a manual drill that she can use herself. I would not recommend this product and/or purchase anything like it again.
Sloppy chuck makes drilling straight difficult.
November 17, 2014
Drill works, but has a poorly machined chuck. As other reviewers have noted: the handles are indeed plastic. And while they feel cheap, they do work. The biggest failing of this drill is the chuck. The surface of the 3 fingers that hold the bit are so poorly machined you will find it difficult to mount a bit straight. The cast drive mechanism is ok. If you plan on replacing the chuck and handles yourself this could be a good drill. There is a better German made hand drill at 4x the cost of this, which would probably be better.
Its Plastic, not wood
March 4, 2013
The metal construction with double pinion action is very solid and runs smooth. This almost seems overengineered for a light duty hand drill. However, as another reviewer has remarked the product has been altered and all wood parts are now out of plastic. Not high quality stuffk, but rather Dollar store grade. If something will brake its going to be one of the handles. Disappointing, and misleading product information.Invest a few $ more and get the Schroeder Hand Drill which is still the way it should be.

The drill was advertised as a wood and metal drill. The drill I received was metal and plastic with poor alignment. I am dissatisfied with this purchase. This drill did not meet my expectations.
out of alignment
February 26, 2013
The manual hand drill works but it's out of center so you have to allow the handle to move from side to side to drill a hole without breaking the bit. This limited one my uses for it where I need to have kids drill holes through an aluminum jig. For showing the evolution of tools, this works fine.

Could be better,
January 6, 2017
The jaws are attached to spring steel leafs and only grasp the drill bit at the top. There is a square indent on the bottom of the chuck but if your bit has a round or hexagonal shaft it will not seat tightly and will slip under pressure.

Basically sturdy, poor workmanship
December 17, 2008
Received this item yesterday. It feels basically solid, but I was very disappointed to see how misaligned the "jaws" are. When adjusting, they don't come together evenly, and the closest they come together is about 3/16". So you won't be able to use it with small bits, even though the packaging states that it can be used with bits of "all sizes."I'll probably keep it, but will likely need to pay a bit more for one of higher quality.

December 25, 2015
So I just started getting into building random things out of wood and the like. I didn't realize that these dril bits are meant for a specific type of drill because they have rounded inserts, which do not work with your basic drill. Also, they are not as sturdy as I had hoped, because the 4 smaller ones all broke when I tried to drill through plywood. Just spend 10 more dollars and get the titanium drill bits from Dewalt. You'll end up saving money in the long run because you'll end up buy those anyways when these break.

Hawk brand hand drill - look elsewhere
January 21, 2015
I also received the Hawk brand hand drill in January 2015.1. Handle is rubber/plastic that you have to twist into the main crank. It could have been better if the metal thread was 2mm longer to get a tighter twist or else one will have to super glue it. The rubber/plastic handle is on the low quality side.2. Package has a warning that it contains chemicals that cause birth defects. This warning is common even in toys.3. The crank jams every 20-30 spins.
Junk.
December 23, 2014
Mine came with plastic handles, which is not a dealbreaker. It has bigger problems. It won't hold a bit straight without a great deal of fiddling, and I think that luck has more to do with it than design when it holds correctly. The crank is prone to bending. The little gears had some broken teeth, the large gear is too far away from the small gears, causing constant sticking and slipping. I can't even use this as an egg beater, much less a drill. I disassembled it to see if I could find the problem. The chuck is a simple design, but it is machined very roughly, with lots of burrs sticking out from both the dimensions and the threads. It had a great deal of grit inside, which I cleaned out and re-oiled, but I was still unable to get this drill to perform adequately.
plastic not fantastic.

bait and switch. The product that was delivered was dollar store plastic. The drive gear is warped and only engages the spindle every other crank. I had to add a spacer and some tape to get this to quit wobbling. I wish that the other bad reviews were up when I ordered.
not worth the money

stuck twice on every turn--- will never work. tried to clean it but to no avail. new is not always the best. well you live and learn.
ITS NOT WOOD!!

This is a PLASTIC and metal tool!! False advertising! I wish I had read the previous reviews before I purchased.
Don't buy this product!!!
December 26, 2009
The worst manufacturers and sales staff of this product out there. Company will not work with you on exchanging their junk products. You end up paying shipping three times. Original purchase was 4 drills, hubby got 3 of them working by working extensively and swapping parts around until only one didn't have enough good parts. Company made us send back at our expense (ok) and repurchase and pay ship and handling again. Avoid this company like the plague.

This is junk. It broke the first time I tried it. One of the four pieces of the chuck that holds the bit in place broke off and fell out. This is crap, save your money.

Spend more, get a better tool
September 4, 2014
Purchased this tool for a backcountry wilderness project in Montana. It broke the 1st day of use (about 10 holes drilled). What broke? One of the four chuck teeth just broke off the entire tool making it useless. We had to hike 7 miles out of the woods to get a replacement. The Amazon return policy would not let me return this item. I'm hoping the manufacturer will stand behind their product and offer a refund, please. This tool is better for at-home light duty projects for "fun". The bits suggested to purchase with the brace did not fit well and wobbled in the socket, requiring a close eye to keep tightening the chuck. Pay a little more and get a more a reliable and rugged tool that lasts.
Junk

This is cheaply made junk. Broke 10 minutes into the first use. Remember this is a woodworking tool. NOT subjected to high stress or high speed. I DO NOT recommend anyone wasting their valuable dollars on this item.
cuck slips

I have only had this a few months. The chuck(jaws) used to slip a little, now it is impossible to use.

This broke after using it once. An internal part is plastic and wore right off and could not be fixed
Not precise at all - a great disappointment
June 21, 2016
Cons: Not precise at all, and useless for the jewelry work for which I ordered it. That is, the spiral shaft the makes it turn is very loose where it enters the handle, allowing about 4-5mm of free play (wobble) at the collet. So, when you push down on it, to make the bit rotate, it wobbles around. I broke off one of my finer drills (#77) immediately. I re-tested using one of the larger drills that came with it, and it drills a hole without breaking the bit, but the hole is not very precise, owing to the wobbling action. This sloppy fit is inconsistent with the range of four collets provided, which go down to very fine.It is possible that I just got a bad one, i.e., there is a problem with quality control, but from examination of the product it seems to be a bad design. I decided not to return it, given I can't tell whether this is bad design or manufacturing defect, and the cost of return shipping relative to the price of the item.I was able to reduce the free play (slightly) by slitting a plastic drinking straw, and sliding two lengths (nested) inside the barrel of the tool. It still was not able to drill a hole in my silver.
More like a toy.

It could hardly drill through a paper napkin. I'm sorry to say I was very disappointed with this product.
Really disappointed. It worked like a charm
March 19, 2016
I used this tool twice, and it does not work anymore. It now twirls but doesn't spin the drill bit, and gets stuck on the way down. Really disappointed. It worked like a charm, and I drilled a few pieces before it glitched.
Don't waste your money.

I received this drill in November and have used it twice. Today I used it for the third time and it stopped working. The drill no longer twists the bit when you push down on the top, making the drill useless. Very disappointed in this tool. If I could give zero stars I would.

Cheap and break easily
August 20, 2017
These drill bits were an add on item for a hand held drill, which is ridiculous because they're not meant for it. When used with an actual drill, they easily snap without much pressure, and get stuck in the wall. Considering the brand name, I expected better quality. These bits are junk!
False advising to go with the PD 600.
June 8, 2016
I ordered the drill bits thinking they would fit the PD 600 drill and screwdriver combo but little did I know I would also need a bit tip holder . These drill bits were advertised to go with the PD 600. Alas, there was no drill bit holder which means they are of no use to me and the item would be more trouble for me to send back. I'm very disappointed.
Does not "fit most brands".
April 14, 2016
These bits are listed together with the AV600, and vice-versa, but they're not compatible. The AV600 uses hexagonal bits with a wide base; these ones have bases that are only as wide as the bit itself. The drill can be forced to grasp the largest bit (which is hugely unsafe) but the rest of them are far too small for the drill's cuff. Do NOT make the mistake of purchasing these items together.
WILL NOT work with Li4000 another sneaky Recommended Purchase together. Do not Buy! Saving new customers the frustration.
February 25, 2016
Another sneaky attack by Black + Decker, the first was the double ended bits 71-081 and now the 15557 10 pieces drill bit set (rounds) not (hex) and will not fit with Li4000 hand held screw driver. This was also recommended purchase together and it doesn't fit because of sneaky advertising. Again, wasted money and not worth the trouble sending it back. Would be cool if Black and Decker just refund back into amazon account purchased from.
Low quality, breaks easily
November 15, 2015
The smaller drill bits break really easily. Most annoyingly, they break off in your wall, which means that you have to open up the hole to retrieve them, then repair the hole you made to fish the tip of the drill bit out. Turned a 20 minute project into a 2 day ordeal involving patching and repair and waiting for spackle to dry. Spend the extra money on drill bits that won't snap in half on first use.Plus, the larger drill bits are not sharp enough to actually puncture harder surfaces (like hardwood). So you end up running down your motor trying to break through the surface, and generating a ton of mess. Not worth it.
"10 Value Pack" value=cheap
March 24, 2014
not even worth a dollar. One of the bits snapped like a toothpick on my first attempt. The slimmer bits bend during drilling and they will snap. Can't speak for the larger bits as I have not used them but they look sturdier. Overall, I would invest in a quality set than this.
