Yay, this is totally a GOOD product!
September 15, 2017
Yeah, this thing works great. If you can figure out how to work a rubiks cube or a transformer toy, you can figure this out quickly.I tried it on 3 vehicles, a 99 ford taurus wagon, an 05 kia sedona van, and my 95 chev blazer. It works on all three. The only thing missing from this is a front tire stabilizer strap, and a strap to hold the seat down tube solid to the mid brace.Plenty of pedal clearance on my 3 rigs, no chance of scratches.SOLID strap mountings. Soft non-scratch feet. It ALL fits in the bag, with some room to spare. It says it is lightweight aluminum, but it is hefty and solid, it is NOT a flimsy set-up.The straps are long enough to fit just about anything. The people who designed this thing were REALLY REALLY good at designing a well made product that does exactly what it needs to do, no more, no less.
Very Impressive Bike Rack
June 29, 2017
I needed my bike to get around my work campus today. Usually, I just put my Specialized mountain bike in the back of my truck, however, my commute is 60 miles round trip and my Camry gets much better gas mileage. It took me about 5 minutes to figure out how I wanted to mount it. Once it was on the car, I mounted the bike and off to work I went. No issues at high speeds, bumps, or cross-winds. The bike rides in a very stable manner. I'm impressed; especially at this price point. I would recommend this bike rack to anyone who is going to haul just one bike and desires to put the rack away when they leave their car. It exceeded my expectations.
Still using it!!
March 16, 2017
Coming back to write a review after I have had this a few years. I have used this on two different cars (a SL1 saturn and a Mazda 3) and it is so dang versatile. Quite sturdy, easy to install and remove, and folds up pretty nice. Once I got the hang of it, I can put this on the car and get the bike on in less than 5 min, really. Have used it with two different bikes, too, and it's great.
It's very well built and is easy to remove or place back on the trunk
January 30, 2016
Out of the box, this item looks a bit intimidating to set up. There are a lot of straps and the arms expand and collapse. It is very intuitive once you realize how the straps work. It was as simple as expanding it out, hooking the top two straps to the top of my slightly opened trunk, and the bottom strap on the bottom of the inside of my trunk---then tightening the straps. It's very well built and is easy to remove or place back on the trunk. I have no concerns about my trunk/paint becoming scratched or worn as the material used for the support does its job well. The bike fits securely and holds very well. The only issue is that the bottom support rests directly on my license plate, which I'm concerned about getting pulled over for. After some research it seems that it is pretty much a non-issue (although I'd still like to talk to an officer to clarify the law on this). This obviously has no impact on the products quality.I would recommend having bungee cords readily available to secure the front wheel in place and keep it from hitting the bumper. They say to use excess strap from the unit, but it takes more time and is less secure. As someone who uses this daily, the bungee cords are a pretty clutch.
Nice Rack!

I have a Dodge Journey and this rack fit it well. Attaching it to the vehicle was as smooth as I would have hopped, but after a 2 hour trip with my bike (21" frame, 700x38 Tire, road bike) it did shift a bit and the rests on the bottom shifted down the tailgate. It was not something that caused a huge problem, but where we back up at home, there is a curb. The bike just barely cleared the curb, whew! There is always a trick to learning how these work best with different vehicles, so do not let this discourage you. The rack worked very well. Protected my bike and the bike did not slide in the rack itself at all. I just learned I need to have the bike riding higher than lower when possible.I kept the rack and will use it. It does a great job in my opinion. It comes with a bag to put the rack in once done and it does not take up that much room considering. I would purchase some longer velcro cloth, or smaller bungies with it. I got the smaller bungie cords, and they worked great, but they did rub a small spot on the frame after the trip.
Well made and very compact.
April 19, 2015
I suspected that this rack might not fit my car when I ordered it but I was desperate so tried anyway. Of course, the rack did not fit but I kept it because it is such a decent, very compact but sturdy and easy to use bike rack. Most likely, I wont always own my current car but I will probably always own and need to transport a bike. As I said, the rack is well made and well designed. It would fit just about any kind of hatch back vehicle(except mine lol) and even most vehicle's with trunks. The rack also folds up and is stored in a nylon sack and takes up very little room in the back of your car while not in use. If you own a car that this rack will fit, I cannot recommend this rack more! Instead of a bike rack that you have to take off and store in your house or garage somewhere, this one pops off, folds up and tucks away in the corner of your trunk.

Excellent, sturdy rack
August 23, 2017
After doing a bunch of research, I purchased this for my 2013 Ford Escape. The manufacturer's website actually does not list this as for that make/model/year, but I found several review sites showing the rack on a 2013 Escape. It was actually pretty simple to attach to the rear hatch and it feel really solid. I drove it around like a madman in my neighborhood, taking hard sharp turns and slamming on the brakes and such. It didn't seem to budge with my bike on it. I've taken it on much longer (and less crazy) drives, as well. This is the first and only bike rack I've ever owned, so I don't have anything to directly compare it to but it seems fantastic so far.
Great find.
July 18, 2017
I can't say enough good about this rack. The ease of use, the sturdiness, the fair price, the intelligent clasps, the warranty, and made right in neighboring Wisconsin!! -- Are all reasons to love this rack. The various videos the company has are a great selling tool that helped me decide, and the are very accurate and truthful. Seems like a wonderful company behind a great product.
Awesome rack for my Equinox
June 27, 2017
I love my Saris 2 bike rack, I thought it would be hard to me to install on my Equinox considering I have issues with the use of my arms at times, but after I put it on the first time I realized that it was easy to install and I can now install it myself in about 5 minutes or less. I have traveled 700 miles this past week (highway driving) and my bike rode securely without any problems at all!
Fits my Nissan Versa Sedan perfectly! Very Happy with Purchase!
July 1, 2015
Very Happy with the purchase of my Saris Bones 805 (2-bike) car rack! I bought this rack after lots of shopping around and doing my research, I found this to be the most helpful, attractive and had many good reviews from multiple sources. I drive a 2010 Nissan Versa Sedan, after a bit of adjusting the arms of the rack, it took no longer than 10 minutes to figure out, I was able to mount my bike in no time. I have a 1996 Diamondback Mountain bike, it weighs roughly 34lbs (pretty heavy, I know), I am able to put both my bike and my friends bike on my rack for a total of 68lbs (MAX: 70lbs), yeah it's kind of pushing it but once the bikes are on, their ON!! This Saris Bones 805 bike rack holds on the car like cement, good luck trying to move it an inch after its mounted, this is the real deal! With 2 bikes on the rack, neither of them touch my car and I'm confident to drive on the highway with them on the back (if mounted properly, make sure to read the instructions!) Now once the bikes are mounted, there is nothing to keep the wheels from spinning, so it is up to you (if you want) to take a few bungie cords and tie down your wheels, I personally think it's easier to drive when the wheels of the bike are not spinning. Overall I'm very happy with my purchase, I paid $150 for this rack and have no complaints at all, I've used the rack at least 6 times since I got it a month ago! It has a very smart design, easy to adjust and how can I forget but a Lifetime warranty as well, you won't be thinking twice once you buy this! Thank you!
600+ miles in the weather with no issues!
March 14, 2013
The first time we really put this bike rack to the test was during our move. We moved about 600 miles in one day and needed a place for our bikes, so I ordered this about a month before it was time to pack up. I can't say enough good things about iThe only thing I would caution about buying this rack would be if you have a cruiser or other vintage frame bike, or large handlebars. Be prepared to grab a tool and spin your front wheel sideways if you do not want to hassle with getting it on easily or scratching your windows. I have a Ford Freestyle hatchback small SUV with back glass and the rubber feet held well and did not scratch. Don't forget those side straps are labeled (top, side, bottom) so that will save you some trouble.PROS:secures firmly, with no damage to window (or my window business decal)holds 2 bikes with rear basketsvery little wiggle even with wind, no extra cords/bungees neededCONS:cruiser style bikes are hard to get onto this rackDefinitely would buy again...great bargain!
Great Carrier -- Elegant Engineering
July 6, 2009
I looked at the Bones carrier largely because it was in every bike showroom I visited, and I figured that must mean something. While choosing a bike I tried out many, and thus visited a lot of bike stores. This carrier was ubiquitous, and it fit my car. I don't have a trailer hitch. And, I can't imagine standing the bike up on the top of the car -- I'm sure to drive under something low and wreck the bike.I've not had a bicycle or this carrier long, so I can't speak for long term use, but so far this is a truly excellent piece of engineering design. I'm not talking about aesthetic appearance, which other reviewers often praise, I'm talking about function. It's solidly made. The adjustment method is elegant. On my sedan it attaches tightly to my car and holds the bike securely. No parts are made of steel so there's nothing to rust. It's an impressive piece of design work. You need to go to their website, and enter your car in the "Get the Perfect Fit" box to see if it fits yours. With the arms folded down it fits close to the trunk, extending barely beyond the bumper - see my picture. And, though it says somewhere not to open the trunk with it attached, I do it with little difficulty. The feet tend to keep the trunk from closing without fussing with them just a little.Someone mentioned being difficult to tighten the hold-down straps. I find holding the buckle release open while tugging on the strap works well and is easy to get them tight. The niggles:After you set it up and use it once it's simple and you won't forget, but the instructions that come with it are inadequate and it's something of a puzzle at first. The chap who says he had it installed and a bike mounted in 5 minutes out of the box is a miracle worker. You can find a setup video for the three bike version on the Saris website. Go to the Bones 3 page and click on the "Installation Video" link in the list on the right. The two versions are close enough to the same this helped me a lot, but the gal doing it slurs words occasionally. Oddly, on the Bones 2 page Saris doesn't link to this useful video, so you have to stumble on it or learn about it here. Some bikes and some cars require special accessories you buy from Saris. They don't make this clear in the ads. For example, women's bikes may need a special bar (at this writing Amazon carries this bar). The bar is explained in the video mentioned above, but who looks for the video before buying the carrier, and other accessories are not in the video. For example, the bike peddle presses against my trunk. In this case they sell a special pad for the peddle to rest on, or you can use something like a piece of rubber to put between peddle and car, or rig something yourself. Right now I'm using a piece of that rubber-like friction shelf paper held on the peddle with a rubber band.If they happen to fall in an awkward place on the bike, the plastic straps that hold the bike to the carrier can be fussy to get undone. One of mine's like this, but after a little practice it's okay. This seems like a lot of negatives but they are all pretty minor and the carrier works great.Edited to add:I've found one problem with this carrier. Occasionally I use it to carry both my bike and various friends bikes. My bike peddles and those of my friends, until recently, have rubber on the outside so this problem didn't come up. Recently, however, I've taken a friend with an old fashioned steel bike with metal on the outside of the peddles. The first time my bike was located on the inside (nearest the car). His peddles were resting against my bike and scarred it pretty seriously. It's only cosmetic but I'd managed to keep it in mint condition 'til then. So, the next time we went I put his bike on the inside and mine on the outside where his' greater weight was near the car and it was easier make sure his peddles didn't rest on my bike. This time it made a jagged cut through the paint on my car.So, the message is, if you use this device take great care with the placement of the peddles on both bikes or make sure the outside is rubber and not metal. Sometimes that's difficult to do, so maybe put a leather sock around the peddles.Edit 2:I used this rack for three years. I quit using it in 2012 because health issues no longer let me ride. In those three years I probably used it 50 or so times and never quit liking it.

I love that it is easy to install and compact
May 14, 2017
I love that it is easy to install and compact. However, I don't have good upper body strength so I am unable to lift my bike to attach to the bike holder. I wish that it was positioned lower on my 2017 Acura RDX.
The Allen Sports compact folding rack fits inside a backpack! But please make sure to wrap the pedals. It will scratch your car.

Allen Sports Ultra Compact Folding 1-Bike Trunk Mount RackCheapskates, Rejoice! This bicycle rack is a lifesaver for cheapskates who refuse to pay for parking. Yes, I am a cheapskate. I admit it freely. I purchased my Allen Sports rack in 2014 and I depend on it every day for running errands around Honolulu. In case you didn’t know, the cost of parking is obscenely exorbitant in Honolulu, Hawaii. I rejoice in knowing that I spent only $32 on this rack and now my parking is free while everyone else is forced to feed their parking meters at $1.50 an hour. Five years ago, I worked in downtown Honolulu and I paid $300 a month to park in a garage near work. I literally could have saved thousands of dollars.Perfect for College StudentsI bought an Allen Sports rack for a friend who goes to college at the University of Hawaii, which is a commuter college in Honolulu. She, too, is a cheapskate who refuses to pay for parking. At the university, parking is more than $400 per year. Instead of paying that amount, she simply parks a few miles away in a residential area, unhooks her Schwinn and glides into campus. She is happy that she’s getting daily cardio exercise while saving money on annual parking fees. Where did she learn this money saving technique? Of course, she learned from the master of cheapness. Me.But Does it Work?Yes, the Allen Sports compact folding rack delivers on its many promises. It folds down easily and fits inside a backpack. In my experience, it fits a variety of cars. I’ve mounted the rack on a 2017 Nissan Maxima, 2013 Toyota Camry and a 2010 Honda Pilot. The padded legs are gentle on my car and do not leave scratches or marks. (That is very important to me.) There is one problem though. Although the rack does indeed “keep the bicycle secure” it does not keep it 100 percent separate from the vehicle. Every time I mount my Schwinn, there’s always one pedal that tends to rub up against my car and scratch the heck out of my paint job. Of course, now I prevent that from happening by wrapping that pedal in a t-shirt and securing it with a heavy duty rubber band. However, it’s a little disappointing that I’m forced to do that. I have to admit that I should have taken that precaution from day one. But when you’re late for work and you’re rushing to install this rack, stuff like that happens. I’m not going to blame Allen Sports. Like I said earlier, I am saving tons of money while everyone else is wasting theirs on parking garages. I guess I can spend some of that money repairing those ugly scratches. (I know that sounds ludicrous.) Take my advice and wrap that bicycle pedal well. Take the time to do it, and you’ll have zero problems. Would I purchase this rack again? Yes, in a heartbeat.
Nice Rack
April 7, 2016
Overall a nice little rack. Works perfect for me. It's not anything special or fancy but it works as advertised. I've seen a few reviews talking about scratches but I've always put some sort of cloth where the straps touch my car and the pads themselves are soft enough to not scratch. BUT, this is only if there isn't any dirt between them and the car. This is mentioned in the directions but should be common sense. The reason I went with 4 stars instead of 5 is because the spots where your bike sits aren't quite wide enough to accommodate my frame. A minor gripe and a personal one but, something for you to consider if you have a carbon frame that has a wider top tube than normal. I'd definitely recommend it.
Highly recommended for lighter use applications!
September 25, 2015
I purchased this bike rack last summer (2014), after acquiring a larger bike that accommodated my height correctly. I own a small Toyota, and was travelling about 200 miles round trip most weekends. I needed a cheap rack that would easily attach/detach to my car while securely holding my bike during the drive. I use the rack only when I am physically transporting the bike. I do not leave it on without the bike on it.• I would recommend this rack to anybody who needs to transport their bike on a semi-regular basis, with a lighter use.• I would not recommend this to anybody desiring a permanent solution to their bicycle transportation needs.Key components to consider when purchasing: Materials it is Made of This bike rack is made primary of hollow metal members for the framing. The areas that would contact your bike and car are a soft rubber baced by plastic connections to the metal frame. The rubber will protect your bike very well from scratches and other damage. The plastic first appeared cheap, yet it has surprised me over time in quality. The tubing provides a study enough frame to support any common bicycle while the rubber padding creates a solid connection from your car to your bike. Functionality This rack folds out with remarkable ease and can be folded back down to about the size of a shoe box. The rack attaches easily to most vehicles, and you can confirm this at the product’s webpage (http://allensportsusa.com/fit-list/). The rack has easily adjusted straps that clip directly onto your car and tighten easily. Simply loosen the four straps and lift it off your car for removal. A downside to this rack is the compatibility issues towards cruiser-type bikes. The two arms that support the bicycle have difficulties mounting bicycles without a top beam in the frame.Overall: For the money, this bike rack was well worth it. For a permanent solution, I would recommend a sturdier rack to ensure you will still have your bike when you get to where you are going.
Midwest to West!
August 20, 2015
First of all, I don't really write reviews, but this thing was worth writing one. This thing helped tremendously in saving me money with shipping my bike for my move from Chicago to Portland. Let me just say that I honestly didn't trust it when I bought it. Look at it, it doesn't look safe whatsoever, but for it's price totally worth it. I drove from Chicago to Portland, going mostly 70-90 mph, with this thing latched on to the back of my sedan and it worked pretty well. When it gets tightened the straps are really long, so you can use it to wrap around your bike wheels and make sure they don't wiggle or spin uncontrollably. I definitely recommend googling some dope knots to tie so the straps are extremely tight. One downside is that the bike is only attached by the straps on top, so my bike was getting lifted up from the draft of the wind. By solving this I just used a cord and wrapped it around the frame of the bike and red base of the rack. So, after 1000+ miles I made it and the bike was still on the back of my car. Yay!
I like it but be warned...
May 12, 2014
I have a Honda civic and moved across the country with my bike attached to this rack. The good thing is it didn't fall off when I was going 80 miles an hour. The bad news is that after 23 hours of driving with wind resistance and bumps and regular travel, my bike had scratched the paint on about 3 areas of my trunk and back bumper all the way down to bare steel!! The problem lies in the wind allowing the bike to shift in an angular fashion from where it is attached to the rack, so at high speeds or sudden accelerations/decelerations, the shifters and handlebars make contact with the vehicle, as the front end of the bike does not stay fixed forward without turning unless you used maybe a cable lock to hold it in place, which I discovered a little too late.

First bike rack

So far so good. Only had it for a week but it's doing its job. Although the top atm seems to move a little bit if not secured fully (slightly loose), which causes some minor abrasions to the trunk area.
Good for Ford Fusion 2016
October 9, 2016
Very good productPROS-3 strapping points - 2 on top tube, 1 on seat tube-Durable structure with Aluminum core.-Not heavy-Easy to mount and fasten on the trunk-Nice design, when ounted and also when folded. It does not take much space.-Independet support arms allows you to adjust to the frame shape.-Arms can be adjustable to bike height, so you don't get it too close to the ground and not too high up.-The empty rack with arms opened or folded allow you to open the trunk without any obstruction and no risk to touch the back glass.-No scratches or marks, the rubber feet work well-I've used so far 2 times, driven for 60 miles with my bike on it, and it holds perfectly, no vibration or loose bike.CONS-Metal clamps of the straps might hit the car body, when vibrating, so be careful and protect that area. (I used the extra strap to wrap the metal clamp and rubber bands to hold it in place.-Excess of straps needs to be secured somehow, otherwise it will be flying loose-Plastic screw to tigthen the supports does not look so strong.-Plastic straps to hold the bikes, does not have a toch finishing, so it may rub the bike frame painting. (I've seen other brnads with a rubber strap instead.-The straps to hold the rack in place are not so convenient, 6 holding points to fix every time.-There 's nothing to hold the steering tube and front wheel from rotating. You might not like that loose during transport hitting your bumper (I used hook&look straps - 1 to hold front wheel and another to hold pedal and rear wheel)One good thing on the ford fusion trunk is the dedicated holes to anchor the hooks on the bottom (At least I imaginne that' the purpose of them)Easy to mount on the trunk with the straps and clamps.
Bought this because I have a spoiler
December 5, 2014
I bought this particular rack because I have a rear spoiler on my Corolla S and it is difficult to find a trunk rack to accommodate it. The rack is easy to use although I did have a tough time getting it to not touch my spoiler as the rack settled with the weight of the bikes and the straps stretched a bit as I was driving the first time which was a 300 mile trip. I had to pull over several times and cinch it up and it did end up leaving small grooves where the straps were rubbing against the spoiler. I have since made a buffer to set between the rack and my spoiler for future use. I think the more I use it the more I will learn the proper weight distribution of our bikes and placement of the rack which will probably help keep it off the spoiler (it's a fine line, but I'll eventually find the sweet spot). Overall I am happy with the rack and it looks like I have many years of happy biking ahead.
You must be able to lift bikes up on the trunk to use this rack.
November 12, 2014
The rack works as it stated; but it was too difficult to put the bikes on and off the trunk. I had no problem selling to to another person. . Some people like to load on their trunk. It is make sturdy. If you take it on and off your trunk often it is sort of irritating. . I do recommend when you take the rack off your trunk to put a sock over each leg to keep the rubber end of the leg clean because that is what goes directly on your car and you don't want to scratch your car with bits of sand and dirt.
so far so good! great for roadbikes... not so much for mountain bikes
June 1, 2011
This is a great universal roadbike. So far it has worked on every vehicle i have used it on!Honda accord... checknissan sentra... checkmazda hatchback... checkmercedes suv... checkthere were a few more as well, but the point is that it works and it works well.My wife and i have road bikes, and they are perfect. My friends are always commenting on how much they like that it can adjust so freely and it has latches for the top as well as for the side so that it does not swing back and forth so much.I would suggest getting some bunjie cables to keep the front tires from moving around.I did have some trouble getting a couple different mountain bikes on. One was a female bike, but it was very awkward.i like that it is very simple to setup and tear down. IT takes me about 5 minutes to set it up and it is always secure. Nothing has broken yet and it is in great condition still. If you are looking for a good bike rack, this is perfect. you will be able to set it up however way you want to whatever car. I have not heard any humming noises coming from it like you get with some of them.At some points, the straps are longer, but it is easy to tie them up and get it out of the way. I have NEVER had to worry about the bike not being secure.the only reason for the 4 star rating is because it does not work with all bikes. Like i said, with my roadbikes, it is very easy, but some mountain bikes could be awkward and may not fit.--------------EDIT2 years later and this thing is still going strong. I have not found any damages to it, but the only thing i am worried about are the nylon straps getting dry rotted. I can notice it being dry, but not even close to losing its functionality
Easy for a bike novice to use
October 11, 2009
I bought this rack about a month ago at the same time I bought the first bike I've owned since I was about 13 years old. I am new to cycling and owning any bike equipment. This rack was recommended by the bike store where I got my bike, but I ended up waiting and ordering it from amazon (which came quickly and in great shape). My husband helped me initially set it up for my car which took probably about 20-30 minutes, but since then it has been quick to use. It takes me just about 5 minutes to get it hooked up to my car now, which I do by myself, and then another minute to put on the bike which is really quick. I do have a hard time with one of the straps that goes around the bike frame because it seems the clip is in an awkward position, but I have picked up on tilting the bike a certain way which makes it a lot easier to unbuckle. Now that I have that down I find that the bike is incredibly easy-on, easy-off, which is key because if it were a hassle, I would be incredibly unmotivated to take my bike out of my neighborhood.Having never used a bike rack before in my life, I was definitely nervous the first time I put my bike on and drove away, even though everything felt incredibly sturdy - but it has been great and doesn't seem to move at all when I'm driving. I feel that my bike is safe there while I'm driving.I also really like that this rack will work for my small Acura and my husband's SUV.

Scratches paint
April 28, 2017
The hooks could easily scratch paint where they attach. Bike pedals and front wheel can move around and make contact with the rear of the vehicle (in my case an suv). Overall, sturdy design, but you may want to coat the hooks with something.
Worth the money, but don't expect wonders
July 22, 2015
The rack is compact and hardly takes up any space in your car when folded up.It is easy to set up, but is a bit of a faf to put on the car. It takes me less time to take the wheels off my bike and load it into the car than setting up the rack and loading the bike on it.If you use a bike with housings on the bottom of the top-tube be warned the rack will squash and pinch them a little and could cause problems on a long journey. The stability of the rack is acceptable but I don't recommend drifting around corners and driving too enthusiastically. For short trips from your house to your nearest riding spot the rack is near perfect. The rack offers great value for money. For longer trips and more burly mountain bikes I would recommend looking elsewhere.
Had to return rack twice but Allen Sports and Amazon are fabulous!
May 2, 2014
So this rack has little metal buttons that I seemed to have a major issue with - either I didn't push hard enough and they wouldn't retract or I pushed too hard and broke them. Obviously a problem only I have because I did not see this in any the reviews I read. I also returned the rack and got another one after I had issues with the first one - so yes, it was definitely me. Otherwise, the rack worked well for carry bikes, we easy to install. I just couldn't collapse once it was open and that is a feature I really wanted. That said - it was super easy to return both racks to Amazon. No issues at all there. I also contacted Allen Sports and I was shocked at how quick, responsive and helpful their customer service was.
It's okay
December 16, 2013
I'm giving this a 3 star because it's a hassle to attach to my car. When driving at 70 MPHs (I'm afraid to go faster) and that it might fall off. I have a cruiser bike. Whenever I go over a bump, it wobbles and the handle brake would scratch on my windshield. It wobbles and I always feel like it will fall off. But it hasn't so far!
Decent Rack for a single guy
July 29, 2013
I have had this rack for 3 months now. I transport a Fuji cyclocross to and from races every weekend. I received this bike and initially thought that it was sturdy and held my bike well. Downfall was later on. I normally tie the wheels so they don't spin, as well as the front wheel gets locked to prevent it from banging into my car. I noticed last week that when I was taking the rack off, there was a large scratch, 2in. long .5 in. wide, on the top of my trunk (I now have foam padding on the feet). This was not from the handlebars or any parts of the bike, they are completely tied down and locked up. I don't know how this occurred but do know that the chip is directly where I place the feet every weekend. I am betting this is not normal for this but it is my experience with it. I now have to get a paint kit to repair this scratch as it went down to the metal. Otherwise, I am happy with the frame, just not with its wear-and-tear on my trunk.
Does the job - just get a bungee cord or two
October 17, 2012
I used this carrier for a 2008 4-door Saturn Astra and a Schwinn Volare commuter bike. The bike is pretty much the exact same width as the car, so it fit great. The carrier folds up into a neat little drawstring bag that can be stowed in the trunk, and is simple to unfold and install (I used the lips of the trunk only; couldn't find a suitable metal lip on the underside of the Astra). It says maximum weight is 35 lbs and I think my bike weighs 38 or so, but it held up fine for a 3-hour drive on the highway (probably hit about 85 or 90 mph maximum). No excessive vibrations or even reduction in gas mileage as far as I could tell.I used the excess slack in the strap to keep the wheels from spinning and the fork from turning (and that worked fine for a 3-hour highway trip), but a bungee cord is probably easier and more effective. You can get away with using one, just loop it around the front and back wheel and make it tight it enough to prevent the fork from turning and the wheels from spinning.UPDATE: After about 10 uses, two of the four locking metal tabs (the spring-loaded pins that keep the arms from swinging when it is in its extended position) have broken. I have tried repairing them but they are stuck in the tube frame of the carrier. I may be able to replace them with a bolt or something, but it will be a fragile fix.

straps broke, Saris replaced straps per lifetime warranty
July 30, 2016
We purchased this bike rack in April 2014 for use with a 2010 Honda Fit base model. We've used it on several short trips (<1 hour), and 2 long trips (7 hours each way). On the last 7 hour leg of our last trip, the left upper strap broke and the second bike on the rack started hitting the ground and the bike tire was damaged. The damage to the bike tire was easy to fix, but I am concerned about the potential safety issues if the bike rack fell off our car while driving at 70 miles per hour on an interstate. Therefore, I do not plan to use this bike rack on long trips in the future. On closer inspection, it looks like the black plastic portion that protects the strap from the aluminum tube broke and moved inside the tube so that the strap came in direct contact with the aluminum. Over time with the bumping from the highway, the aluminum cut through the strap. See attached photos of the interior of the tube and the broken strap.I contacted Saris about this, and they sent me replacement black plastic portion and straps for free per their lifetime warranty.
Does not fit 2013-2015 Honda Civic Si Sedan...even though it is listed as compatible on eTrailer
June 25, 2016
Purchased because I was told it would fit my car, but it didn't...even though sites like eTrailer list it as compatible. If you have a 2013-2015 Honda Civic Si Sedan DO NOT buy this rack instead look towards the even more cost effective Saris Sentinel, that one works and you still get the quality made in the USA Saris name.I would have returned it, but I had to take a hacksaw to the upper support arm to even begin to fit it under my stock spoiler so I could transport my bike in a pinch. There goes $150 down the drain. With that aside, this rack is a amazing rack, it folds up nice, is very sturdy and stable and it holds the bike very nice and snug. The anit-sway loop works very well at not allowing your bike to swing around as you drive. Probably the most commonly used trunk rack at my local trails so that speaks volumes for it.I don't really care for the rubber feet, they scratched the living daylights out of my paint even though both the paint and rack feet were freshly washed prior to installation...I have no doubts this rack will fit your car though if it doesn't have a spoiler or if it only has a simple deck lid spoiler. It is VERY adjustable and can be adapted to fit almost any style of vehicle. It probably will last a long time, you can tell when you pick it up that it is a tank!Note: @Saris, remove my car (2013-2015 Honda Civic Si Sedan) as a listed compatible car to this rack to save others from the frustrations I have encountered. Other 9th Gen Civic models will work, but the Si Sedan will not!
Works but not complete
January 21, 2016
Works on my Lexus IS.My main issue is that it's not complete ... to fully protect the car they should have included anti sway straps for the front tire (as it is now the front tire is permitted to move and hit the car). It's solved simple enough by getting some velcro straps at the hardware store ... I think some should have come with unit. But it works just fine and the rest of the unit is designed very well.
especially like the anti sway feature
July 6, 2015
Well designed, especially like the anti sway feature. I wish it had less straps, but I supposed they are all needed. Clips seem tight in the trunk gaps on my Mercedes E350 convertible. On my Lincoln MKX, there is not a hard edge at the top of the tailgate for the clip to attach. I have to 'rig' the clips onto the hatch lead, then it holds securely.
Trusty rack, if you're sure of no defects
September 16, 2014
This works as expected and seems pretty sturdy. My only complaint is that one of six clips is defective, the internal spring mechanism seems to be broken as the pin doesn't retract or relock by itself. In fact it takes a lot of pressure to relock it. I discovered that the first time I had it on my car and looked in the rear view mirror to find one of the cables hanging in the air. Luckily I didn't have a bike attached at the time. I also didn't want to go through the hassle of repackeging it and sending it for replacement.Obviously a good product, but I would appreciate a little more quality control on the manufacturer's side.
Yeah- not so Great
September 3, 2013
I'm just not in love with this. It's easy- ish to attach to the car, but the curve of the bike holding arm makes it very difficult to get the bikes on and off. Also have a little trouble securing the bottom feet in the bumper of my CRV even though the manufacture website says it should work for my car.

more damage than worth
August 12, 2017
this does not stay on the car it slips around and dings the paint. i had to reposition 3 times in a 4 hour drive to go on a bike ride. at which time it ripped my back windshield wiper off. do no waste your money on this buy one that doest touch the car. it got 2 starts for price and the fact that it did hold my bike.. but it will cost me more to fix the damage it caused.
I Gave It A Try But....
June 18, 2017
I originally gave it 4 stars and had only used it twice so this is my amended review. I'm not pleased with it. I purchased it because I have a small car and my bike wouldn't fit in my trunk. It's easy to install but I don't think it's strong enough because I kept looking in my rear view mirror watching my bike slant to one side, but since the bike trails were only 1/2 mile from my home, I wasn't too worried. After noticing the scratches on my bumper I decided enough was enough so I purchased a quick release for the front wheel on my bike and take it off; now the bike easily fits in my trunk.
Disappointed
November 13, 2015
The good thing is that it's compact. However, once you unfold it, it's hard to fold it back due to the pins that keep the arms sturdy. Great idea but construction is poor. If you choose to just keep it open, I guess it's okay. But that defeats the purpose of it being compact and easy to store in your garage or car. Had to return.:(
Frustrating
April 26, 2014
I purchased this bike rack for my sedan, however had to return it because the clasp that holds the bike in place was round and didn't compensate for bike frames with a top tube that are not round. While most bike frames have a round top tube, mine is kind of oval shaped. The frame is compact but is awkward to open and can be kind of frustrating with all of the folding mechanisms and the annoying straps that always get tangled and are in the way. The whole thing is a bit of a nuisance, but I suppose if you want something compact, and have a hatchback car, this thing might work for you. It doesn't just fit hatchbacks, but seems better designed for them. I would suggest getting the two bike holder rack if you don't have a hatchback, or if your bike's top tube is not round.
Not for long drives...
September 21, 2013
When I found out I'd be moving from MD to OH, I really wanted to take my bike with me and thought this was the perfect solution, I only have 1 bike and a lot of the racks I saw were for 2+ and seemed very bulky. This holds up to it's "ultra-compact" claim, It came in a box somewhat bigger than a shoebox, but sadly I can't get the pegs to go in to fold it back up so it is sitting in my garage half-folded. After some repositioning so it wouldn't sit on my license plate, I tightened the straps as shown and knotted underneath, and used bungees to immobilize the wheels and handlebars. It started shifting shortly into my drive, and after a few stops to correct it, I gave up and just let it be. When I got to my destination, I saw the bottom leg dented my vehicle and scratched the finish as well. I was very disappointed but at least I have my bike here and not in storage...
Good set of racks but missing vital information
December 6, 2012
I received the product on time and in good condition. It seems to be sturdy and well made with some thought going into the design. However I believe the instructions were unclear on how exactly it needs to be used. For a first time bike rack user like me, it was difficult to comprehend. More importantly though the product information on Amazon did not include the car compatibility information that would have been very useful to know before buying it. The website just says "Fits sedans, hatchbacks, minivans, and SUVs". However I was not able to hook it up to my Chevy Traverse and only then did I find behind the box that it was not compatible with the Traverse and a few other cars. I am disappointed that this vital information was not provided earlier.

I'm finding the bike straps to sometimes be very difficult ...
June 30, 2017
I'm finding the bike straps to sometimes be very difficult to pull through while loading my bike and and often more difficult to pull out while unloading. It's frustrating and time-consuming, and the car hooks will mark up your car a bit. I'm now looking into having a hitch mounted system.
Warning - leaves marks/can scuff your paint
June 28, 2016
Warning - i used this on my 4 door accord (white) and the rubber feet scuffed my paint up significantly, leaving black streaks that couldn't be removed. If you care about your paint job, don't buy this type of rack. If you don't care, then it served its purpose. Bikes seemed secure enough.
Too expensive for how it works.. Will mess up paint.
August 14, 2014
Put on a Civic SI 2006.. Did not fit very well as rear spoiler was in the way.. I do not see where clear coat or paint damage would not occur at contact points. Especially where all the straps go. And metal hooks on paint edges? MEH! no.I ended up returning and buying a trailer hitch and a trailer hitch bike mount from Amazon.. It only added about $30 to the price and is far more secure. I can leave it permanently attached and still use the trunk as well. Though It did require some installation with tools
won't work for many FS bikes.
September 21, 2013
This rack won't hold many full suspension bikes. I have a Yeti 575 and with some creative configuration I was able to fit it on the rack, but wouldn't be able to hold another bike. If you have a hard tail you'll be fine but if you have a full suspension bike and there are suspension components in the front triangle you may have a hard time with this rack. The rack seems to be adaptable to many style trunks and hatch backs so I thought it would fit my car (Nissan Maxima) with no problems however there was no way to fit the rack to my car without the straps and clips pulled taught across the spoiler - wound up with some nasty scratches from the 1 time I used this rack. There are plastic set screws on the adjustable arms. I stripped the threads on the set screw tightening by HAND! No I can't even sell the thing...I gave it 2 stars because if you have a bike with a standard style frame, a car with a regular style trunk, and dainty hands, this rack may work for you.
Decent product, but a bit misleading
September 14, 2013
The bike rack has a weigh limit of something like 35lb per bike, which both my and my boyfriend's bike exceeded, but the information wasn't in the materials presented onlnie. I had to return it and get a 3 bike rack instead from a different company.
Not the Rack for Me
June 8, 2013
Just received the Saris 805. Although my car is listed on their web site, does not appear to fit correctly, perhaps due to short trunk lid. Also, the center stabilizer could not be tightened and therefore locked into place - assume its a defect on this particular product piece. Will be buying the Thule 9006XT which I borrowed and works well. Price on Amazon and local pricing are similar, so will purchase at brick and mortar in case there is an issue. Have to re box the Saris, go to UPS etc.

Broke on 6th use. If you care about your bike, go with a better quality product.
September 30, 2017
The strap ripped and broke while tightening it on the 6th use. Most of the strap is tough, but there is an elastic piece that is the weak link. I'm guessing it was put in there to absorb shock or to allow tightening without breaking your car, I'm really not sure. I just know that it broke. When it wasn't ripped, it worked well. I'm glad it broke when I was tightening it and not while on the road. That would have been a $2,000 mistake. If you care about your bike, I would go with a better quality product.

This will not fit the ubiquitous Lexus RX350. Posting a picture of the fit guide on the back of the box would save people a lot of aggravation.

Please validate the Size Fit Properly
May 15, 2015
I have a Honda CRV 2011. The fit says it fits but it doesn't. The two hooks on the top did not match the car profile so I had to open the trunk in order to get the hook ends in the gap, which ended up having scratches in that area. The bottom one was a mess, it did not work at all. I was moving and received this product a day before so had no option but to use this. For the bottom strap, I used the towing hook and tied the strap around it. This product and company looks hi-tech that they check the fit on numerous cars but it is completely misleading. I won't recommend this product to anyone since it doesn't guarantee it's going to work and you get a bad surprise when you open and try to use.

Doesn't fit two Giant bikes
July 1, 2017
We have a 2006 Honda Accord and two Giant bikes (2015 Roam and Rove). This bike rake does NOT fit both bikes. We purchased an Allen Sports Tension Bar Bicycle Cross-Bar Adaptor to fit on the Rove. No matter which way we fit the adjusted the bikes, both wouldn't fit on the rack at the same time. We tried with the tension bar and without the tension bar.
the return was super easy.
November 30, 2015
Product came broken. However, the return was super easy.
Shoddy. Poor quality control.
July 3, 2014
Shoddy construction. The various arms are secured by plastic screws. One of the arms would not allow the screw to tighten - as if perhaps the screw receiver was set too deeply into the arm for the screw threads to reach. I tried it with other screws, but the length of the screws is consistent. Thus the screw will not work.
Beware of the type of bike you intend to haul
May 19, 2014
This carrier does not work for my bike because mine is a "girl's" bike - no bar going across top of frame. This seller did not specify in the description - I guess everyone is supposed to have a mountain bike. Too late to return it. I just now got it out since it's been too cold to ride. Very dissatisfied.
Poor desing of the Bones 2 Saris Bike Rack
October 28, 2013
I have purchased hundreds of items from Amazon without complaint. However, this is a first time reviewer of a product. I am the recent owner of a hybrid bike and my wife also purchased a woman's bike which could not be loaded on the bike rack due to design of the bike. In order to use the Saris rack, I purchased a bike beam in order to allow the bike to be supported properly on the rack. There is no possible way to load the two bikes on the rack. There is so little space between the two bikes, the pedals of my wife's bike push between the spokes of my bike's wheels. I would risk damaging my bike and the wheels by using this rack. I called customer service at Saris and the representative's reply was not to use the rack if I felt "uncomfortable" but that this should not be a a problem. I was surprised at the poor response and reiterated that it wasn't a matter of feeling uncomfortable but knowing I would destroy my expensive bike if I would listen to his advice and use the rack anyway. The rep then stated that the rack is generic to fit as many bikes as possible but can't promise to fit all scenarios and situations. He then suggested contacting Amazon in order to return the rack. Unfortunately, time has run out on my 30 day warranty for an item never used. I expected a more professional response from Saris with some suggestions on how to resolve my problem. Do not recommend purchasing this item since there is no guarantee it will work for your specific bikes.
Bike carrier
July 22, 2010
Mounting the rack on the vehicle is not an easy process. The rack is not designed for cars with plastic bumpers. The thumb screws that tighten the legs & arms are made of cheap black plastic and can easily be stripped. The Saris Bones 805-2-Bike Trunk Mount Rack is poorly designed.May I suggest you go out and purchase a Thule bike carier, or hitch mount carrier by Thule. You get what you pay for...
