It does NOT lock open, so it is held open by your weight. Sturdy enough for my husband to use at Scout camp. June 11, 2016 Here is another item that we purchased for my husband to attend Scout Camp. He is a new Scoutmaster and this will be his first year attending camp. As a leader he doesn’t have to sleep on the ground but can take a cot with him. Now, my husband is not a small man and wanted to be sure he had a sturdy cot that would handle his size. There are several things that he really likes about the Coleman Pack Away Cot. One is that it is 80” long and sits 17” high so he doesn’t have to sit down so low to get on the cot and will hold up to 300lbs. Another feature he really likes are the crossed, metal legs that easily fold out and back up again and then the folded cot fits into a zippered case. He likes that the hinge at the center of the side rails is covered by a canvas flap. The last feature that he really likes is that the side table can fasten on either side of the cot. At just over 20lbs this is not a backpacking cot but will work well for camping in a spot where he can park close to the campsite. Very comfy and worth getting! October 12, 2015 I bought this cot because of the reviews and price. I have to say, my husband was not a fan because it does not lock but we used it all weekend on a camp out and we had absolutely zero problems with it.I move A LOT in my sleep and it was great. I did put a small cushion underneath just in case and used my sleeping bag. I was very comfortable all night. It is very long and wide enough for me and my husband. I am heavy set so I was a bit reluctant to buy a cot. The cot is built well and can withstand a lot of movement. I would recommend this to anyone. Very worth it!Make sure you have a big enough tent. I have an 8 man tent and I had room for both cots and enough space for someone else to sleep on the floor. I don't think you could fit 3 of these in an 8 man tent. Keep that in mind when purchasing. My Kind of Cot August 26, 2015 These cots are exactly what we were looking for. The unfold and fold up easily and they were the perfect length and width. It made a big difference in our camping experience. My husband cut a foam padding to fit and with our sleeping bags on top, it was comfortable and secure feeling. While we did not use the side table, it's nice to have them available if we decide to use them in the future. So much better than air mattresses because we now have the room underneath the cot to store all our camping stuff. All in all it was one of the best buys we've found. Worth it. Every tent comes with its own metal nails but they are so crapy. They go in and half way down they bend, but this ones don't. They were amazing and I wish I would have bought more. They do sale them separately for less than a $1 each at home depot so I'm definitely going to buy like 20 more before our next camping trip. They go down very easily but you definitely need the back of the hammer to get them back out. The extra piece is probably to dig them back out but we couldn't find ours. They are strong!!!!The little broom with tiny dust pan came in handy inside the tent because overtime the names came in they dragged some dirt inside with them. Great addition August 23, 2017 I got this kit to supplement my Coleman Sundome tent and I'm glad I did. The stakes that come with this are superior and held up great. The stake puller is a nice tool and it makes it way easier to pull up the stakes. The dust pan and broom make cleaning up easy. I think it's a great kit to have handy. The extra stakes were nice too vs July 5, 2017 This kit is worth it alone just for the little brush/dustpan and the hook to pull out stakes! Sure you can use other tools but why not have a separate kit and throw it with you tent so you don't have to think about finding tools out of your tool box everytime you go camping? The extra stakes were nice too vs. the thin/shorter stakes that come with most tents. I dunno why Coleman doesn't include those as standard. We set our tent on a somewhat sandy area and those other stakes kept coming out. These stakes held in nicely. All in all, very good, useful purchase. Perfect for my Coleman beach tent! April 12, 2017 I absolutely loved having this handy kit with my Coleman tent. The stakes in it are amazing and worked so much better than the ones provided with my tent. The mallet makes putting them into the sand a breeze!! I think we used the broom everyday to wipe of he tent throughout the day and also before packing it up. And again, the other thing to remove the stakes made his assembly and disabbemly a dream. I highly recommend it. These are great for car camping July 25, 2016 I bought three of these for a recent trip to my mother's house as she did not have enough beds to sleep everyone comfortably. These are great for car camping, or accomodating a guest for a night or two. I used mine along with a backpacking inflatable mattress and was comfortable enough. Nice Folding Cot for Camping July 2, 2015 Very nice cot. My teenage daughter (about 115 lbs) slept on this at camp for 4 nights in a row and said it's comfortable.She was a little nervous about it folding up with her if she put too much weight on one end, but it never happened. The way the cot's legs are designed (your weight holds them down, they don't click/lock into place) it was a possibility. I stored her suitcases under the cot after setting it up, that way if it started to fold it wouldn't be able to go very far. No problems and the bonus was getting the suitcases out of the way! :) The only time the cot tried to fold up was when I was putting the sheet on, because I had got up on my knees to reach the other end of the cot and my weight was very unevenly distributed on the cot.Overall very pleased with this purchase. Putting up and taking down was a breeze (I did it every morning and night to make more room in our cabin). Just a note- the side table is an on or off kind of deal, it does not fold down out of the way. You have to remove it, which isn't a big deal since it literally sits in place, but it's worth mentioning. Well made and comfy June 9, 2015 As my son started Cub Scouts, we needed to get some camp gear. (our pack camps a LOT). Before I invested a bunch of money in the gear, I borrowed some from friends to make sure the wife was on board. She loved it, so time to gear up.I borrowed two different cots. One like this and one with stretchers across the head and foot. I liked the firmness of the tightly stretched cot with the bars, but they were pricey. I found these and bought two so there would be no discussion over whos was better.After several camping trips, I found these are far easier to setup. The stretched ones take some real effort to get the bars in. These just unfold and ready to go. They are quite comfortable, and the little side table is great as it has a cup holder. We've even used them for guest beds with no complaints.I guess eventually I'll need to get two more for the kids. They are sleeping on the ground, but eventually they are going to wise up. :) | 19% Nice little set August 18, 2017 Good for the price. I really wanted the handheld stake puller and mini dustpan. While the handle on the puller is a bit flimsy but I am relieved not to have to worry about another puller coming off a mallet, and the dustpan is very small, not the best quality, but it gets the job done. The mallet is a basic mallet, hard to go wrong there, and the stakes are good and solid. I love there is a carry bag for them as well. Great but a few lil issues. April 3, 2017 I like the rubber mallet but not sure what to think of the tent spikes. For my tent a 4 person seemed a little excessive. The broom seemed do an ok job. To finish clean up I got the vacuum. So that is why it is a 4 do to the broom. I think however the spikes will do better for a bigger tent. Worth the money March 14, 2017 Mallet and stakes seem very sturdy and robust. I'm not sure if the brush and pan will be much use as they are pretty small. I'm also not sure how folks reported they bent the stake puller as I tried to mess it up and couldn't. Basically, the whole kit is a little cheaper than just buying four stakes and a mallet so it is a pretty good bargain. Good kit, but the stakes will come out of ... March 10, 2017 Good kit, but the stakes will come out of the ground easily since they are a simple shaft. However, the mallet and camp dust pan are fantastic and at a cheaper price than if you purchased them separately. Buy for the stakes not the mallet August 4, 2016 I bought this to upgrade my tent stakes, as well as for the stake puller. I just used this kit for the first time on a recent camping trip. I was impressed by the stakes and stake puller. Both were invaluable. The stakes are easy to hammer into the ground with the flat nail like head. The mallet failed horribly. I had hammered 3 out of 4 stakes successfully. As I was hammering the last one in, the mallet head came completely off the handle! I saw that it had only been glued onto the handle. I was disappointed. Thankfully I had already staked my tent because I didn't bring a backup hammer or mallet.The hand broom worked great for cleaning my tent floor. And the stake puller worked perfectly when it was time to leave. Handy Kit to Have April 23, 2015 It is a handy little kit to have if you tent camp. We used everything in the kit on our last trip and everything worked as intended. If you use the bigger 10 inch tent spikes, the puller that comes with this kit is really handy. I leave the spikes in the bag as spares after losing a couple on a buried tree stump. The spikes got stuck about halfway and when I pulled them they were stuck so bad they bent. If set up properly, I'm not worried about it collapsing. It just isn't that comfortable to sleep on. I'm going to try it with a pad next time. For the money, this should come with the pad. It's Okay Short Term May 20, 2016 Great for the price, and the side table is great, but I wouldn't want to sleep on it for more than 2 or 3 days. I've slept in far more comfortable cots. This was a gift after I moved into my new house and was waiting on getting a mattress. I didn't however get restful sleep sleeping on it and was sure ready to sleep on an air mattress after the second day. Nice, but not really sturdy January 7, 2016 These are nice; easy to put up and are a good size. My only problem is there is no way to lock them in place, so they can collapse if you are not careful or don't have them all the way open. I got them for my kids, and the first time they used them one collapsed when my kid got on it. She didn't get hurt, but learned that if you are getting into the cot, you need to do so carefully. Okay for the kids July 2, 2015 It makes a lot of creaking noises the first few times you use it; I think it needs some breaking-in. It has a funny smell to it that's gradually dissipating. It's very heavy and surprisingly difficult to set up with only one person because of the odd way it folds up. And be careful not to wiggle too much in the head-to-toe direction while you're lying on it because it might collapse and you'll end up on the floor. And it's not very comfortable unless you put some kind of pad on it. Perfect For Home - Not So Much For Camping March 11, 2015 I would give this a TEN for a temporary cot AT HOME - it's incredibly comfortable even with no pad. It's a comfortable length, width and even height. The little table is helpful just because this sits as high as a typical bed (less chance to tip it over reaching for something). Unfortunately, as a camp cot it probably rates a TWO - as this thing is very large and very heavy (21 pounds) - what you cannot imagine is how awkward this is to get into a tent if it's not fully closed. We actually hurt our backs getting it in and out of tents - it's almost too large for even our largest 4-person tent. The legs do not really lock - so while we felt it was totally stable on a house floor we were less sure of it on uneven camp footing. | 10% Hammer smells and mesh bag is an issue September 27, 2017 I'll probably keep it but the hammer smells awful. The rubber part emits a strong unpleasant odor. I'm a bit concerned about packing it and having it transfer the smell to other items. I pack it in a ziplock baggie on trips. I'm hoping it finishes off gassing at some point. Also a mesh bag isn't a great choice for carrying stakes because they'll stick through. However when they ship it, the stakes have little ends on them that keep them from sticking out. But if you plan to use the stakes that's a fussy detail to keep up with. Maybe they can be used as nose plugs for the hammer. Stinky mallet April 7, 2017 I haven't used the items included in the kit yet but wanted to point out that the mallet stinks, literally. It smells so bad I had to put it outside. I'm hoping it off-gases so I can stand having it in my vehicle. Right now, it's intolerable. Better gear at the sporting goods store August 19, 2016 This kit is convenient up to a point. The mallet and dustpan/brush are durable and useful.The carry bag is handy and allows for quick storage in a small space/area.The tent pegs are good as far as holding lines and being driven into the ground. But the plastic heads don't hold up to multiple uses (learned this after multiple camping trips this summer).On the first trip, the stake rod puller worked decently. On the last trip, it bent and warped to the point of being unusable.I honestly think that you can get better for the money at Walmart or a sporting goods store (or just spend more, which is what I should have done)I kept the mallet and the dustpan/brush, which is why I still give it a 3 star rating as those items are still useful to me. Mallet works but everything else.... July 19, 2016 This set has everything you need, which is nice. That being said the quality is suspect. On there second use, the plastic piece on the end of the stakes broke while trying to use the stake remover to pull it out. The stake remover is also really flimsy. My least favorite part of this is the bag though. It's mesh but the pointed spikes stick through the holes and cause it to rip and snag. The one thing that's performed so far has been the rubber mallet. It's worked like a charm and came in very handy. Everything else has been mediocre at best. They also have plastic caps on top of them that you use when pulling the stakes back out of the ground--they bend and we even had one break. The bag is a bit small so you have to take everything out to rearrange it and put it back in when you get it out. However, I gave the product three stars because of the mallet and it is better than the alternative (regular tent stakes and a hammer.... Incredible stake puller but crappy mallet - buy this just for the stake puller and stakes. July 12, 2016 I wanted to rate this 3.5 stars but 3 it is and here's why. The tent stakes are virtually impossible to accidentally bend unlike the chintzy stakes that come with a lot of tents and unlike the plastic heavy duty stakes, these don't break if you hit the stake on the head. The broom and dustpan are okay as well as the bag, nothing special.I was incredibly peeved when the rubber mallet head flew off just minutes after using it for the first time. I even tried to gorilla glue it back on but the rubber doesn't stick well to gg so that didn't work. Basically the mallet is trash and I can't return it now. HOWEVER, the real GEM of this pack is the tent stake puller. I have no idea why I've gone so long without one of these. Two Star Reviews: | 3% Too noisy July 23, 2017 This cot is a nice size, wide enough to be comfortable and a nice height from the floor but the problem is every time the sleeper moves it creates really loud sounds as the fabric adjusts against the railing. It's difficult for anyone in close proximity to sleep. Almost good June 23, 2017 I dont like that the legs do not snap into place if u move the legs fold n u can slide down the end. so so January 11, 2017 Difficult to setup, sags at the ends and ends outside legs slip. I guess you get what you pay for. Does it work, yes but I don't recommend it. Spend a little more for a decent one. The frame failed on the first night. December 27, 2016 I must of got a lemon. I bought this for the holidays to accommodate an unexpected family member down for Christmas. Upon setting it up it had an alarming amount of wobble. On the first night of use the legs on one side collapsed. This resulted in frame being bent. It wont fold up correctly now or fit back into its storage bag. I don't get let down by amazon ever so this is just a fluke I guess. Regardless I wont be buying this item again. Too firm and too loud! September 1, 2016 Purchased two and wish we could return.... Very firm, which some might like, but also very noisy when repositioning yourself at night. My husband and I basically kept each other up all night with every move we each made. Disappointed. No locking legs!! July 10, 2016 We purchased two of these cots to keep us off the floor. I love Coleman...in fact very few of my camping equipment is made from anyone else. Let me start by saying these cots are heavier than I expected. When we unfolded them they kept collapsing. We looked for instructions to lock the legs only to discover they don't lock at all! We did not have them collapse while sleeping on them. However when our children bump them or push them on the sides, they nearly landed on a few toes. I'd like to also say I am a thin woman, but found the width a bit difficult to get used to. Those bars don't feel great on the hip bone. I am terrified all night that it is going to give as it rocks back and forth. They are strong and go in easily but getting them out is really hard. The green ends rotate and are not at all substantial. Pulling then out "using the supplied tool" simply bend the plastic end. Useless Stake puller sucks, mallet is even worse. Save your money. October 24, 2016 Just took this tent kit on it's first camping trip and I'm pretty disappointed with it. The rubber mallet head came off the wooden handle on the third stake that I was putting in the ground and the stake puller was also useless for getting the stakes out of the ground, it just doesn't give you the right leverage without bending up the plastic on the stake. The broom and dust pan performed pretty flawlessly though and the bag did a good job of holding its' items. Collapsed, Dangerous as Designed March 25, 2017 We received 2 of these cots a month ago. We used them the first time tonight for 2 of our grandsons. I told them to only get on and off from the center not the ends. I noticed the cots were unstable in the long axis as I put them up, but pressed on as the reviews were overwhelmingly positive. An hour after they went to bed, we heard a noise and crying. He was not getting off the cot, he simply shifted enough more towards the end and the cot shifted enough to collapse. The cot had collapsed at the head end, the end that is most probable to have the most weight, regardless of the size of the person. The cots need framing added to ensure they are stable end to end as well as friction added to the legs where they contact the surface they are standing on. They should be designed so that they do not shift and or collapse regardless of where the weight is. Damaged product! December 26, 2016 The item itself was damaged inside. Tue box was fine which tells me the product was packaged in damaged condition and shipped. Very disappointed as it was a christmas gift toy dad and he opened it and it was what he wanted but dmaaged... Piece of garbage.......fabric tears easily! August 11, 2016 Piece of garbage. Do not buy. I had it less than 6 months and only used it a hand full of times and it got a tiny tear in it........that tear proceeded to split wide open and dump me onto the ground..........for the price you pay you would think that they could make a better, stronger fabric. Solid cot, comfortable enough, but squeaky and no locking March 21, 2016 It is nice and big, so you never feel like you are falling off or have to crunch up your legs. Very sturdy construction, so it should last a lifetime. What I don't like about it is that the material squeaks very loudly around the bars, so every time you roll over or get in/out it makes noise. Not a huge deal if you are camping or in an otherwise noisy environment, but we got it mainly to help with sleep training our baby in the nursery & the squeaks are not very good for that. Also, the legs don't lock in place so if you try to scoot it over, it collapses all over the place.UPDATE: Changing to 1 star since it ripped down the side and we are under the weight limit. We weren't folding it up, it just ripped while laying on it. The tent stakes are nice and the broom could be useful if it wasn't so small. The stake puller is made of cheap steel, and a complete waste of time and money. I broke the plastic pieces off of five of the stakes trying to pull them, and bent the puller itself. I would have to reshape every time I wanted to try to pull another stake. And the rubber mallet is not of good quality. After staking down my tent into sand the handle has come loose from the head and the rubber has started chipping away, probably from hitting metal with rubber. Go figure. It was near impossible to get about a dozen other stakes out of the ground, luckily the office had a claw hammer to get the rest out. So do yourself a favor.
