Good and solid
July 7, 2017
I only wish the smaller one was sold with the same discount as the larger one. Haven't used it yet but far better than what we have used in the past and we heat our house in Ohio with our wood fireplace.
Still looking brand new after 1 winter
April 19, 2017
27" inch version purchased and used for 1 winter. Still looking brand new (a little dirty) after 20 fires. Showing zero signs of wear and doing exactly as it should. measures 23 inches in the back and 27 in the front.
Great product, very thick metal
March 22, 2017
Great quality product. The metal is thicker that the walmart junk (that bends). This should last a long while.
Perfect for a gas pipe that is high
January 17, 2017
The shipping was on time. What I was worried about is that we have an unusual pipe protruding from our wall. It is the gas pipe that lights the wood (first image of pipe). The problem is that we needed a grate that was tall enough so that it could stand over the pipe. Otherwise, the weight of the grate on the pipe would damage it, as our other one has already done (that's why it is bent, second image). But this grate is exactly what we were looking for. It is perfect height!! (Third image). It is also very sturdy. And it looks classic and matches our fireplace (last image). I can't wait to use it on a cold winter night like tonight. Thanks so much!
Awesome product. Buy it, but figure out your size carefully.
February 19, 2015
Bought this to replace a low quality hearth that melted and sagged in the middle. I am attaching a photo. This is the best hearth I have seen and I am happy with the product. I recommend to anyone looking to buy a hearth. No possible way to overheat or melt due to quality of the product. However, the decision process for which size to get is very frustrating. the description and reviews offer no complete size details. Therefore, look at the photo I am posting.the 33" measurement is the length from leg to leg. both the front legs and the rear legs are the same length. They are wider than the tines.the depth of the tines (front to back of the fireplace) is 15". They are mounted offset at a V.the front of the tines are 29" end to end, and the rear tines are 23" end to end.The measurement from the floor to the bottom of the leg bar is 3.5", and the measurement from the floor to the top of a tine is 7.5"
Well Made
January 7, 2014
Love my new grate! Unlike previous cheap grates I have owned (home depot, lowes) this one is solid steel rather than cast. That gives it a higher strength overall and better resistance to high temperature. Couple this with Amazons low price and you cant beat this buy!

Has Held Up Well!
January 1, 2017
Bought this grate almost a year ago, and it has held up very well! We see so indication of any deterioration or weakness, and it appears to be solid and sturdy. Lots of reviews of similar products mentioned failures, but this grate is the real deal and does exactly what we need it to do -- hold the logs up and hold them steady. This is a fine product!
Nice fireplace grate
October 9, 2016
Nice thick iron, seems well made. I like how it elevates the fire which provides good air flow, and less ash. Seems to burn through all the wood better than wider open grates. Fits as described and looks good in my fireplace.
Long term evaluation.
October 21, 2015
Long term product evaluation. This grate has held up since Oct 2011 and has no signs of weakening as I write this on Oct 2015. We live in NJ and have 4-5 fires per week during the season. This product was made in USA and well worth the price compared to the cheap grates available in the big box hardware stores that last less than a season !
Fire in the hold(er)!
February 2, 2015
Works like a charm. Holds a lot more wood that my earlier "wire" model. The flat bottom holds the embers much better than wire models with the large gaps between the "arms". Time will tell how it will weather the flames, but I'm starting with a lot more metal, so I'm optimistic.Of course, make sure you measure your firebox accurately before you order. Allow for the narrowing of the firebox towards the rear.*By wire I mean the type with "U"-shaped arms and bed made from welded 1/2" rods. The
This is a great grate.

This is a great grate....many fires no decay of grid like others I have owned....I'm gonna buy another for back up......I burn 4 cords a year so won't hurt to have an extra.....highly ratedUpdate a couple of months later and a cold winter - this is a nice grate BUT back has eroded and now has a hole min the middle where the grate use to be I like it - good size and height but like another reviewer who sent pic mine has given way in the back and center. Don't know if I'll buy the backup as stated earlier - price is decent but I'd like it to last more than one season
Fantastic
December 28, 2012
I use this grate for roaring fires all day every day and it is perfect. It keeps the logs well in place. The height is great so it makes cleaning an easy task without having to remove it to clean underneath. Fires burn longer and stay hotter because of the consolidation of wood.

Built Strong - Long Lasting
April 24, 2017
We have a large Fire Pit and the first item like this looked good, but warped from the heat. (We like large fires) This model is tough as nails! It can take the heat and maintain its integrity. SK
Too tall but great quality.
February 28, 2017
This thing is a brick you know what house. It is much sturdier and cheaper than locally available options. Read other reviews for sizing details. My one complaint is that the legs are too high. I'll probably cut off a couple inches off each leg.***Updarte- I just cut 2 inches off each leg. I used a circular saw with a metal grinding blade. You could use a hacksaw, but it would take some time.
Well built
December 9, 2016
Just had our first fire. Had to order twice as first one got lost in transition from amazon to usps, but it's Christmas time, no fault to the actual product. Our fireplace is 21" across the back and we got the 21" size, didn't realize we could have gone bigger but this works fine. Kind of noticed an off smell the first hour, not sure if it was grate or fire place. Very sturdy, great fire!

October 21, 2016
Great quality order the 33' because it was the only size in stock and all other sizes said 1 to 2 months. Was a little upset that the day after i ordered not only did price drop $10 but all other sizes were in stock. Guess youll have that sometimes. Often than that i love it, arrived on time and box was damaged but what can you expect with something weighing 40 lbs with lots of pointy edges.
Dimensions for purchased 24" steel hearth
October 19, 2016
Arrived ahead of schedule and looks very sturdy. Will report back after a year's use. There should be dimensions with this product so to help others I took pictures before I installed so you can have a better idea of the height, width and depth of the thing.
Solid; Heavy; Good Quality
February 11, 2015
I was looking for a good quality Solid Steel Fireplace Grate. I wanted something that will last for years; and being that I have a fire every Friday or Saturday that we are home that’s asking a lot. Many offered here as well as other places are thin gauge; or worse yet hollow tube grates. This grate is solid steel – the 25 lbs weight proves it. It is heavy, but true to size (at least the 24 inch width). It sits higher than other grates we’ve had, so I may need to cut the legs down a bit. The lifetime warranty is nice; but shipping back a 25 pound package probably makes it cost prohibitive – hopefully I’ll never have to find out.

I am going to have a machine shop cut the legs down about 2 or 2 1/2 inches and it should work just fine.
November 16, 2016
This product is made very well. There are no structural issues with it and it is clearly going to last a long time. My only problem with it, which really isn't the fault of the product, is that the legs are too long for my heater and cause it to take up too much room. They do not offer one of these models with shorter legs that I have been able to find, and that is the justification for my 3 star rating. But I won't let that stop me... I am going to have a machine shop cut the legs down about 2 or 2 1/2 inches and it should work just fine.
Great quality, durable, still would not recommend
October 14, 2016
This hearth is heavy and appears durable. I have built a few fires using it, and have noticed something; you must use very dry wood. The problem with this is that the gaps between the "ribs" is large so decent sized embers fall through meaning that it's very difficult to maintain a decent ember base unless you're building a very large fire. Additionally, the legs are just long enough so that the embers that fall through are just far enough away from your wood that they're not able to continue providing heat to keep the fire going. It's great for making charcoal, not terrific for keeping a nice fire going.I would recommend this if you have a bunch of dry wood to burn through, but if you're working with smaller pieces or it's not absolutely bone dry, you will be better off with one of the hearths that incorporates a diamond pattern metal mesh to hold onto the embers.
Solid product; harder to build up a fire
March 1, 2016
This is a solid hearth. Just be warned that there's a LOT of space between where the logs rest and the bottom of your fireplace, which makes creating a nice bed of coals an hours-long task.
Does not stand up to the heat in the fire place!!!
January 20, 2016
I love it but it fell apart, melted, bent and completely sagged. Returned with replacement coming to see if we just got a defective one. If not that one will go back and a better one will be purchased!
Grate not quite deep enough-ask for dimensions before you buy 27" isnt enough info
January 7, 2016
I should have asked how "deep" is it. Depth is far too shallow for our fireplace. From front legs to back legs is only maybe 8 inches. I needed one same width, but at least a foot between support legs front and back. Overall though this is one of the heftiest for the money and really worth the money if you have a shallow fireplace.

November 7, 2015
I have owned these before, and for longevity it does the trick. but it will eventually it sags in the middle, but take years. I am disappointed in this one it does not sit level in the hearth. I needed to shim it up about a 1/4" on one side. Keep your receipt it is guaranteed for life

January 25, 2016
Grate clearance from floor is only 3.5 inches, not four as described. Most people buying need to know this for gas starter clearance. Seems ok other than that.
Good quality but packaged by a six year old?
March 31, 2015
Looks like great quality however the quality of the packaging job is comical. This review reflects this package job more than the quality of the grate. Who is dense enough to think that a cast iron grate with pointed legs won't puncture a thin cardboard box with nothing but some crumbled up news paper as packing? All four legs were protruding out of the box about three inches when I received it. I can see why so many people have received broken merchandise from Vestal. I'm going to have a chat with Vestal as this situation has has happened many times to a lot of people and is completely avoidable.
Lasted 3 winters
January 1, 2014
It stays hot and makes lighting and keeping a fire going very easy. Did not bend in extreme heat yet. Would highly recommend over the cheaper version you find in stores.Update: After 3 winters this grate has a giant hole center back from melted iron so I've downgraded from 5 stars to 3 and am ordering an even heavier grate to replace it.
Black finish turned white after first use
January 9, 2012
I like this grate but I was disappointed that the black finish turned into an ashy white after first use. The grate works well and looks great with a fire in it but it looks pretty shabby when it's not in use. Apart from that, it's well made and a good price.

Purchased when lifetime warranty was advertised
November 30, 2016
I ordered this back in 2015 One thing that did influence my order was the lifetime warranty Which they have been good about replacing until this time Which now I do not have that option. I don't feel that terms should be changed after a purchase. If a need is seen to change the future terms and purchases that is understandable.
I think a more rectangular design would have worked better.

It melted bent. Update 12/26/16.
February 16, 2015
does what its suppose to do, i believe it has a lifetime warranty. i would prefer iron over the steel but it has the warranty so i guess it doesnt matter. shipment was delayed due to winter weatherUpdate 12/26/16 this item melted after normal fireplace use. Bent in the center

Came apart in center front and rear in second season.
July 11, 2016
I had this for two years. The middle of the second year the grate broken apart in the back and by the end of the year the front had broken in the center. My guess is the metal was not strong enough for the heat, and eventually it weakened and came apart. While the grate design was good, the quality of manufacture was not. They need to make stronger grates for higher temps.

Metal failed during its second winter. Grate melted with regular use.
I had high hopes for this...
January 31, 2014
From all of the great reviews on this I wanted to give it a try. We use our fireplace for supplemental (sometimes our only) heat, so I wanted something that would hold the coals longer and last longer than the usual couple of years that a typical welded-bar grate does. We have gone through two of those over the years. Something like this is what we usually have: Minuteman International FG6-27C 27-Inch Standard GrateThis cast iron fireplace grate holds the coals great, but after less than three months, the back side of it started sagging (read: MELTING) and finally the back rail broke in the middle of the melted area. We know how to build a hot fire and I was expecting a grate manufacturer to know how to build a grate that can handle it. I definitely won't be buying one of these again and unfortunately may go back to buying the cheap ones that we have to replace every couple years anyway. On a last note, if you just need a grate to build a pretty fire for ambiance, this would probably work fine, but if you need a hot fire for actually heating your home, I would pass on this one.I'm going to post a photo of the damage, if I can find out where to do it.

Melted/warped out of shape

We've had ours exactly a month and have used it several times. It's already lost its shape and melted. Terrible product. Very disappointing. If I could I would give it zero stars.
Poor Design
May 31, 2016
I bought this product because it was heavy duty and would hold up longer than the 1/2" ones I've used in the past. This one tends to "feed" the logs toward the front and create a danger when burning in a standard size fireplace. Ended up putting the old one back in and throwing this one out into the scrap pile!
