Five Star Reviews: | 78% Good design, good quality January 22, 2017 Got this for my outdoor pizza oven. I chose this specific item for its relatively small profile: 16 x 12 x 4 inches, which means that the legs are just over an inch above the floor. This gives enough elevation for the wood to be able to suck a good amount of air from underneath and heat up really good. The trapezoid shape is also ideal for a round dome oven, giving extra room for the goods. Heavy construction. Hope to last a lifetime. I would highly recommend. However, the price has gone up quite a bit since my purchase, so that should be a factor when deciding on this one. Hope this lasts as long as my previous grate October 25, 2016 This is my second grate. The first one lasted 3 years and even with the hole in it we probably could have used it one more year. Was very pleased with it. We use our fireplace in winter as our main source of heat and live up north. Before this one we had to buy a new one every year.I just received the new one and am pleased with the quality but was shocked to see a tag on it saying, Made in China. I had thought it was made in the USA. I didn't see a tag like this on my previous one. I hope this isn't a new change and that it will last as long. :-( works grate!!! January 25, 2016 this seems to be a very sturdy grate. we purchased a steel one in the past and what a joke! don't waste your money. the only regret I have is I could have bought the next size up but that is my fault. it isn't that big of a deal so we decided to keep it. it is extremely heavy so be advised if you are weak in hands or arms you may have a problem removing it from the fireplace in order to clean it. great item and we hope we do not have to replace it form several years the wood burns so much better on this grate than on my old firewood grate ... November 21, 2015 I was pleasantly surprised by this grate. I am using it in a fireplace where I burn oak and maple. Although it is probably more suited to soft coal because the air gaps are narrow (which means wood ashes tend to gather on top rather than fall through), the wood burns so much better on this grate than on my old firewood grate which has much larger gaps. The grate seems very well built and I expect to be using it for many years. Unusual Application! January 17, 2015 I had a custom grate made for my fireplace because none of them including this one have a front high enough to keep multiple logs from falling out.Grates break down on the bottom first because of the extreme heat from the coals. The front of my custom grate was like new, but the bottom was almost gone.Solution - Put a cast iron grated inside of my custom grate. It's worked great, especially when I can't get one anywhere with a high front on it.I believe I heard somewhere that cast iron grates stand up to head better than the cold rolled steel my custom grate is made from. Very fine product and not easy to find. January 12, 2014 The money I spent on similar steel grates with a steel mesh on the bottom at Home Depot proved not to be a good investment. Steel grates soften and deform after being heated repeatedly (~1 year of use). The steel mesh on the bottom plugs up quickly with ashes and wood chips, impeding the flow of air to the fuel, and it's very hard to clear. This cast-iron grate will last for years, and in use I've found that it promotes even, sustained, and complete combustion. It is also easy to clear out the ventilation slots just by tapping the grate with a poker. | 63% Nice Quality Fire Grate July 29, 2017 We only used this one season, but it did the job and does not show any evidence of burning out. I like it much better than the wide-runged grate we had previously. Smokin' hot! April 23, 2017 Prefect fit for my fireplace. Well built and sturdy. Holds plenty of wood for a roaring fire! Very thick and works better than the cheaper ones we had before March 28, 2017 Very thick and works better than the cheaper ones we had before. Fire can get hot and not melt the welds because it is all one piece. Would recommend to anyone needing a fireplace rack that this would fit in. I melted my previous fireplace grate... January 29, 2017 I use my fireplace a lot, and my previous grate had to suffer through a lot. The poor thing eventually melted, and I had to throw it out once it fell apart. The Panacea Cast Iron Fire Grate was my replacement, and my research payed off. I heat my home with the fireplace I have in my apartment, and because of this I burn black locust most of the time. Black locust burns long and hot, and so I needed a thick and durable grate that would be able to withstand high heat from heavier wood than something like pine. This grate has held up beautifully so far, in spite of the long, hot fires it's been enduring. It hasn't warped like my old grate, and when I toss another log onto the fire it endures the impact like a champ. If you need a durable grate that's going to last years you should consider this one, you won't be disappointed. good value August 15, 2016 I just got mine and I have not had any crack or warp issues like some of the reviews have stated. I am using it in my outdoor fireplace. I seems to be heavy duty and well made. If I have any problems I will update. |
Four Star Reviews: | 12% but fits better than the one I returned February 12, 2017 A little big, but fits better than the one I returned. Liberty Foundry HY-C G17 Cast Iron Grate August 28, 2015 I am very satisfied with the purchase. The cast iron grate is substantially more robust than current welded and formed unit we have n the cabin fire pit. The old unit welds have broken plus it looses it shape in high heat. I am satisfied after viewing the construction that this will not happen with the new cast iron unit. The price was very reasonable. Does what I needed it to. April 29, 2015 Fits right inside the little Jotul wood stove we have at home perfectly. Raises the logs off the base of the stove allowing ample air flow - and thus good flames to build. Ashes fall away beneath the grate - which also helps keep the fire strong. Great quality, durable item. | 12% Fits well, seems Sturdy March 28, 2017 Ordered for my outdoor fireplace. This fits my space perfectly. It appears to be well made. Packaging was pretty good, although the feet had broken through the box bottom, even though there was paper and bubble wrap in the box. Did not harm th product. Not sure how long this will last, but so far so good No issues January 27, 2017 Can't understand why some of the others are having issues with cracked grates, been using this 4-5 times a week since November with zero issues, we run our fireplace hot and keep the house around 70 degs. Cracked, but works! November 9, 2013 Just like many other reviewers, the grate snapped with the first hot fire. But it really only snapped in one place so the grate is still fully functional and has worked like a charm ever since. We've used this one full summer season in our outdoor fireplace, and I expect it will last many more - seems like a silly design flaw, but in our case not a deal-breaker since no one can tell it's got a crack and it still functions fine. We've had no problems since the first use, and don't expect any more cracks to occur. Will update if it does. Decent product January 28, 2013 The Panacea 15424 grate appears to be as expected: a lighter-grade cast iron import that is reasonably priced. In the three weeks that we have used it, it has fared well, and is a good fit for our hearth. The front of the grate is cantilevered well ahead of the front legs which means that care should be exercised in loading it so as to avoid the potential for tipping forward. There is ample air space under the unit which can be an advantage or demerit depending on the design of a fireplace and the intended use (heat-generating or ornamental fire). My experience has shown that grates with a rear-sloping design and lower clearance produce a hotter, longer-lasting burn whereas grates like this one fire up well but require more firewood to maintain a consistent hot burn. For the money, this is a good grate for our needs. I have limited the rating to 4 stars because its longevity has not been determined yet. |
Three Star Reviews: | 8% The grate seems sturdy. It requires small May 22, 2016 The grate seems sturdy. It requires small, short logs or chunks of wood. Longer, regular length logs end up breaking with partially burned ends falling outside of the grate. Three Stars May 17, 2016 It wasn't tall enough to let air flow underneath. I should've paid more attention to the dimensions. | 7% Quite large April 7, 2017 Measured a bit bigger them described almost doesn't fit. I will be looking for another since it hangs over. Worked pretty well for a couple of weeks but then started ... November 29, 2016 Worked pretty well for a couple of weeks but then started to warp. By 6 weeks part of the bottom was falling out. Disappointing. Good design though. A fine product, good thing it's not displayed, though March 13, 2014 It's a grate, it's iron, it keeps wood off the bricks. What more do you want? It's sand cast and not finished, so it's not pretty, and not fun to handle, but it gets tucked away in your fireplace, and if you are handing it often, you're doing it wrong. Could be a little heavier, but it is solid iron. I'm keeping mine. GRATE JUST SO-SO February 17, 2014 This grate looks good and works well but doesn't last. We use our fireplace mainly for atmosphere just on weekends during the 3-month winter season here in PA. We have used our grate about 75 times since purchasing it in October 2012. The middle bottom of the grate is now sagging and two of the short cross pieces are broken completely. I'm no authority on fireplace equipment, but it seems to me that a fireplace grate should last more than two seasons with such limited use. I won't buy another one of these. |
Two Star Reviews: | 0% There are no reviews yet | 5% Poor construction December 18, 2016 Seems to be well made as far s design but they made the legs different lengths so it rocks and tilts. I bought this to replace the old and tired one ... October 23, 2016 I bought this to replace the old and tired one I had for 5 years. The first time I used this one it cracked in half. I would look at other options. Bottom warped downward February 20, 2016 Within two fires the bottom of the grate had bent downward. Yes, I had a bed of red-hot coals. Grate downfall January 21, 2014 The packaging was not the greatest. The grate came in a box a lot larger than it needed to. Nothing to secure it inside the box. And the box was damaged I'm sure from the grate being thrown around during delivery. The grate itself was smaller than expected. We have a fire almost every night and the grate already has weakened. One wouldn't expect that in the first month of its use. Overall. A little disappointed. |
One Star Reviews: | 2% | 13% Just disappointed January 24, 2017 I thought that I would try and replace my eight year old plus fireplace grate. That was just a month ago. I was thrilled with the quick shipping and primes good price. Sadly I have to say that I am quite disappointed. I don't typically write reviews either way, however I was surprised at the bowing of the metal so quickly. I can only imagine that it will not be long before wood will be falling through rather than resting on top. I was excited because it seemed to be quite sturdy and is cast-iron. I will not order one again, that's for sure. Junk January 13, 2015 I bought this grate to replace the one I had only because of the size. This one fit my fire place much better. When I received it I noticed immediately that the quality of this one did not come close to the other one. The grates were much thinner. After approximately three days of burning, when I was cleaning the ashes, I noticed two of the grates had broken off. The next couple of days with a fire the entire grate collapsed. I threw it away and went back with my old smaller one. Couldn't Take the Heat December 16, 2013 This grate ended as a disappointment for us. I'll preface the remarks by stating that we have a larger hearth than most and keep a hot fire approximately 4 to 5 hrs. a winter's night. That said, we began keeping a fire towards the end of October and have been burning the majority of nights for the past month and a half. During that time, we've noticed that a couple of the perpendicular bars have dropped off and that the center of the grate has "fatigued" down to about 1/4 inch off the ground. We usually get a full season out of our grates and that was our expectation with this one. The fact that we need to replace it in less than two months speaks to our disappointment. |
