Best multi available
July 18, 2017
These are part of my EDC bag. I use them often and take them every where I go. Great for fishing and tasks where I don't want to pull out my tool box from the garage. They are built well and are durable. They are not as expensive as a leatherman and they are built just as well. They are very similar to the USGI army MP600 multi tool.
This is how you do it one handed:
June 26, 2017
In order to open the plier, the handles have to spread open a little bit. So you want to hold the tool by the "outside" handle. Pinch the "outside" handle between your thumb on one side and four fingers on the other side. The "inside" handle is in toward your palm, but not really touching your palm. Now move your hand and lower arm quickly downward, straightening the elbow as you do.The "inside" handle can move a bit toward your palm, allowing the handles to separate ever so slightly, and allowing the plier to extend with a satisfying click. Easy peazy.

Depends what you are looking for in a multi-tool if this is the right one for you. Me personally, I am often in an awkward position when I need mine. Whether it be holding something in place so I can get a few bolts tightened or ensuring my balance is maintained by resting one hand on a steady surface. What I love about this tool is that I can grab it with one hand, open it in no time flat and use it all without having to take my focus of what I am doing. That is the key for me to this tool. It doesn't demand any focus if you are going for the pliers. Most other tools you have to unfold and it seems the higher the quality the stiffer and more difficult that is to do. For that reason I prefer the Gerber. No using my thigh to finish unwrapping my pliers from their coffin. I just flick my wrist and get to work.
I love the Gerber multi tools

Bought this to replace one that was stolen. I love the Gerber multi tools. They are well made, sturdy, convenient, and just plain awesome. I refuse to be without one. I spent 23 years in the Marine Corps and have always had Gerber knives and tools on every deployment including Desert Storm and Operation Iraqi Freedom. I wouldn't go to war without one. They are just so handy to have for so many uses. I would recommend to anyone, anytime.
The tool is great, the design is fantastic

I've been a leatherman man for over 30 years and was skepticle about getting a gerber, so when it first arrived and after handling it for a few minutes, my hands were all black. After a few days I've noticed there is less and less black getting on my hands from the handling, so I'm guessing it's just residue that will go away in time. The tool is great, the design is fantastic, ease of use gets better with time as it breaks in. I'm going to enjoy owning this tool.
Perfect
January 3, 2015
Very well engineered and functional. For the longest time I had been dealing with cheap knock offs of the leatherman. The swiss army knife just doesn't cut it either. this thing does work and ill carry it with me all the time.Pros:-slide out pliers. they were weird at first but then i remembered my old multitool how the pliers would get stuck in one side. this eliminates that hassle.-build quality. built with materials that feel sturdy and likely will last.-scissors actually work. i cant stand when other multitools fail to cut anything as soft as paper. usually i just go and dig out the scissors, not anymore-locking mechanism. every function locks into place so other functions dont come out on you. there have been countless times i had been cutting something with the saw and it folded back in and cut my hand. this eliminates that.cons:-stiff at first. not much of a con. it just needs to be used and itll go away. but when youre trying all the functions, it takes a while to pull them out.-case is minimalist and stiff. again not much of a con. the tool only fits in the case head first. the case needs breaking in.i bought this because i have a gerber knife and its awesome.

I carry the light for work as a police officer. This light is small and clips inside my side pocket of uniform pants. I have had the light for about a week and I have had no issues with the light accidentally turning on in my pocket. The light is very bright. I like that it takes just 1 AA battery because I always have them in stock for the kids toys.
Compact and powerful flashlight!

Love this small flashlight! We live in a very wooded area and I have 2 small dogs. There are coyotes around us, so at night I always bring a flashlights get out. This one is great at finding my dogs in the yard, who also have reflective collars on that are picked up immediately when they start traipsing around the yard.

This was a very inexpensive buy at Amazon. I am not a flashlight guru, but I wanted a good reliable LED device that would give great light and be compact, and this one is that. I like it.
Best Little Light EVER!!
February 26, 2017
Bought this light in December 2016, and I would absolutely recommend it & purchase again. The design is great. The milling makes this comfortable to carry on a daily basis. The light is very bright!! The economy is awesome (I went over 3 months of infrequent use before replacing the battery). The cycling of the light modes is easy to achieve; the button will make a modest *click* when activated/deactivated, and can be done silently.I carry this light inside the waistband and it's comfortable. The price on Amazon was around $15.00USD when I purchased it. The Company's website has them for $30.00USD!!If you're looking for a small, portable, effective, and fashionable light choose this one.
Best flashlight I ever bought
September 16, 2016
I have bought and used a LOT of flashlights in my life. This is the best one I ever owned. But I bought it from Ebay. They had a better deal. This adventure began by seeing a repeated commercial on TV about a super bright flashlight that you can even run over with your car and it still works. So I was attracted but fortunately I did my research on Goodle and discovered the TV flashlight had a lot of negative reviews.I can say a great deal about this the J5 Tactical. It's not the brightest. 300 lumens compared with phsically larger flashlights with 600 lumens. This is not an issue. This flashlight is VERY bright and you can focus it. When you focus to the max you don't see a round circle anymore, instead you see a square element projected brightly on the surface of the wall. I didn't like this. Still don't.You have to buy a battery and charger for the battery separately. Be advised. It uses a 3.7 volt battery. Looks like an AA battery, but in reality the battery is slightly bigger that AA. You can't use a AA with this flashlight. Also I found a better price with both battery and battery charger on Ebay. The flashlight has three modes. Bright, a little less bright, and strobe. Other flashlights have more modes, like SOS, with you don't need and give you more things you have to cycle through to get what you want. Here simplicity is good. The flashlight is SMALL, and therefore VERY easy to keep with you at all times. You see that little clip there on the image where the flashlight fastens to your pocket it wherever. It's VERY strong, and VERY stiff and tight. A little too stiff and tight. You can't just clip it in your shirt pocket because of that. But stick it in your pants pocket or whatever because it's small light solid as a rock and very lightweight. All in all, the best and favorite flashlight I've ever owned.
Compact, powerful, and easy to use. What's not to love?
July 21, 2015
I admit, when I first ran across this light on Amazon I was a bit skeptical. Some of the reviews aren't so great, and the price is awfully low for the level of quality they are advertising. Regardless, for the price, I decided to pull the trigger and give it a try. Boy am I glad that I did. This little light is is wonderful! It easily fits in the palm of my hand and only weights about a pound, so it's very easy to use one handed. Also, the light is very bright, especially considering that it only runs on 1AA battery. How long the battery actually lasts is still up in the air, but I don't see that as a deal breaker seeing as I can easily slap a rechargeable AA in there and not have to worry about buying new batteries all the time regardless of how quickly it drains. I know that it lasts at least a few hours with moderate use because I've been playing with it since I got it. I have attached three photos to this review to show the power of the light. The first two are of it shining against a wall in my kitchen from about 4 feet away in FULL DAYLIGHT. They were not taken in a darkened room, but at about 2 in the afternoon next to a window...and it's still that bright! The third photo was taken in my furnace closet to show the power in a darkened area. Again, the light was about 4 feet away and about a foot or two above the camera facing down at the furnace. All in all, I would defiantly recommend this light. Especially for the price.

Nice but could be better
June 26, 2017
Gerber products last. I've never had one that broke or had issues. This one is great but the release on the pliers is a little tough. Sometimes when I pull the pliers out I have to use two hands because it won't open all the way.
Nice. Could be better.
November 15, 2016
I have a Swiss army knife that has everything I need on it, but the players on the knife or a little dainty and there are no locking blades. I bought this to supplement my Swiss Army knife. It is a pretty nice multi-tool, but I wish it had more useful tools like my Swiss Army knife. Many of the tools on this multi-tool seem redundant and unnecessary.Pros: Sturdy, has locking knives and tools, its compact, has a really nice saw, and has really nice needle nose pliers that are retractable and can be deployed with the flick of the hand.Cons: some of the tools seem redundant and unnecessary. You have to deployed the pliers in order to open the knife, which is an extra step that I don't always want to take when I'm ready to cut something.
Great, but you may need to do some work
October 27, 2015
This is a great piece, but mine came with what I would consider a major flaw. The main joint was lubricated with metal shavings and almost no grease at all. When I operated it at first, you could hear and feel grinding metal. I ended up using gear oil to clean it out over a period of a few days, and then used a syringe with anti seize to re-lubricate it. After that, it was a whole new animal and felt like butter. With that said, this is an outstanding tool that I have no doubt will last me forever. It's built like a tank and worth every penny, which is why it gets 4 stars even with the QC issue. I never contacted Gerber for it, because I was able to resolve it myself, so I have no idea what the experience would be like there should you need it.Highly recommended, you're not going to find a USA multi tool that holds a candle to this at this price.
For jobs that a cheaper multi-tool couldn't hack
September 21, 2015
This is a really solid piece of equipment and all the tools on it function the way they should . I've owned a few gerbers in the past and this one has a slight edge over any I've had. There are a couple things I don't love about it which keeps it shy of a five star rating; the one hand operation some adverts boast about isn't exactly as easy as I was led to believe and for the price you can get another Gerber tool with about the same performance for a good bit cheaper. Honestly unless you're planning to use yours frequently on a daily basis you don't need this model, especially if all you want is a handy tool for those tricky situations that seem to pop up every so often. Although if you're like me, you just think it looks really cool and it's worth it to you. One more tip, out of the packaging you'll want to handle this with paper towels or a cleaning rag since there is still oil and other junk on it from the manufacturing. I didn't mind this too much since it means it keeps the joints nice and safe but it is annoying seeing residue on your hands for the first couple days you use it.
Awesome multi-tool, Good price, Could use a few mod's though...
May 31, 2015
I ordered this about 3 months ago and it is still like new. I read that some users couldn't get the wrist flicking action down. I've had absolutely no problems. There are set screws that you can back out to adjust the tension of the sliding mechanism, also you can lube it for more "slideability". I use to have a suspension model a few years back, but lost it. I also had the bit driver adapter for it, and it works great for the diesel. There are however two suggestions that I'd make to Gerber.1. Replace the lanyard for a non serrated blade and just serrate the other blade completely ( they could easily just drill a lanyard hole at the end where the pliers are.2. Make it so that the tip of the pliers don't stick out when closed (it sticks out about a half inch). That way it doesn't have a chance to ruin whichever pocket you have it stored in.
Good, but a few minor cons
March 20, 2015
Received this today, was looking for a replacement for my aging Gerber multi-tool, and decided to give this Diesel a try after seeing the almost universal praise it has received. I won't go into the tools it has, it has the standard multitool loadout: flathead screwdriver, knife with serrated blade, pliers, wirecutters, scissors, etc. So far I like the Diesel, though compared to my previous multitool, it has a few minor issues:*Pliers aren't spring-loaded. I would have preferred they be spring-loaded, as it makes them easier to use and allows better access to the other tools in the handles.*Tools can't be used unless pliers are extended, as they are on the insides of the handles. My previous multitool had the tools sitting on the outside of the handles, so they could used even when the entire thing is folded up. Not so with the Diesel. Its a minor issue, and I'm sure I'll get used to it in time, its just a little inconvenient.*The black oxide coating comes off a little bit onto my fingers. Wiping it off with a paper towel is definitely recommended.*At least on my specific Diesel, the smaller tools (bottle opener, flat-head screw-driver) are very difficult to unfold.Apart from these issues, this is a solid multi-tool, and I'd recommend it if the above issues are of no concern to you. As I said, they're minor and do not impede its function.

good but with poor light color quality
September 16, 2017
I can't say that the brightness of this flashlight impresses me. It's bright enough for my purposes. I like that two button presses makes it dimmer when you don't need full brightness. Three button presses gives a strobe mode which is useless to me. (The strobe seems to be an attention getting strobe, not an attacker defense strobe... I find neither valuable and the mode is just an annoyance. Luckily, when the flashlight is off for a time, it reverts to its normal full brightness mode when you turn it on again.)The zoom is easy to use, not too loose or too tight. I wish it zoomed out to a wider beam sometimes. Build quality is decent. The color of the light is not that good. I have a Black Diamond head lamp that is over three years old and the light quality from that is much better than this flashlight.
Good general purpose light for the money
August 18, 2017
This is an OK light for general utility use, but applying the term 'tactical' is a stretch; this is no replacement for your Sure Fire. Most notably, there is no momentary on feature - I consider that a must for any true tactical light. That said, it is plenty bright and throws a useful beam an impressive distance, When using the focus ring to narrow the field of view, I was able to illuminate tree tops at well over 100 yards. It's a little irritating that the pocket clip can't be reversed so it can be attached to the bill of a cap for hands free use. It's also a little larger than I would prefer; I think I got spoiled by a Nebo I had that was about half this size (but then again, it was also half the lumens). Good to have laying around in the garage or glove box.
Great, but...
June 23, 2017
This is a great little light! I wanted a small flashlight that was easily visible when it was dark and this orange color is perfect. The body of the flashlight feels solid and has a nice finish. There are 3 light settings if you cycle through them by turning the on/off switch on the end of the light, Low, High, and Strobe. The adjustable beam gives some good light coverage.BUT I can't give this light 5 stars because of the clip. This clip doesn't have any spring or memory. It is made from a very stiff metal, it is very ridged. Once clipped on a belt or waistband, there is little to no resistance from the clip. The flashlight will shift, slide, or fall. If the clip was made of a different material, with more spring action, this light would be fantastic.Light is great, clip for easy access is not so great.
High-quality flashlight
June 22, 2017
High-quality flashlight with 3 options for the light. Love the fact that it only requires 1 AA battery! My only concern is minor—because the button to turn on and off is the same used to cycle through the light options, each time I turn it on it advances to the next light option rather than staying where I left it last. Small issue but that's why I didn't give it 5 stars. Great flashlight overall—I would buy again.
Great to add to your camping gear
May 9, 2017
I bought this to add to my camping/hiking gear in case our headlamps ran out. They're a great addition and they work very well! It's a small flashlight, so it's easy to put in any bag, hook to your belt, or you could even fit it in a pocket. It's a very powerful flashlight and has worked very well on the many camping trips we've went on and used them. They hold up really well and its very durable. I liked this flashlight so much I order some more just to have around the house and garage. I owe about 4 or 5 of them, haha. So I recommend to really anyone, you can't go wrong with having a backup, powerful flashlight.

March 17, 2017
Very Bright light and uses one AA battery. , I ordered 3 of them. They outperform my older mag lights that hold 4 D cell, ever the small LED mag from a few years does not hold a candle to this. Maybe Mag improved their LED technology but have not given them a chance since buying this.Only con with this is the way it switches from Brighter, to bright to strobe. When you are on brightest and turn off, then next time you turn on, it will be on bright and so on, which means I have to toggle the switch more, which could put wear and tear on the on/off button.

Awesome unit with a few flaws
June 19, 2017
Durable, Stable, and awesome! This has a great feel and weight to it.Cons:Yes it's black, but what they don't tell you is that the black residue comes off and your hands look like you have been doing oil changes.Secondly, the unit is not a butterly open unit. The Unit cannot open up past a certain point and does not have spring loaded pliers. A little tricky.

March 17, 2016
This feels like a premature review because I have really not used this tool that much in the field over the past few months. I got the black anodized version of the tool and it took awhile for the black to stop getting on my hands. I've owned other anodized products and that is just an affect of the process, but with a multi tool with so much surface area and tools the material didn't get out properly. Overall all the tools were excellent and the plyers were super convenient. My only real problem with the multitool is the locking mechanisms for the tools , for me it required 2 hands to unlock the tools and that kind of defeats it's purpose as an edc tool. Unless you use plyers alot I guess. This multi tool is made for true work which again defeats the point for me because why have this massive multitool when you can just have a toolbox with proper tools in your truck. If I were to buy it again I would just get the stainless steel
Quite Dissappointed
July 13, 2015
I had a Gerber multi-tool years ago and was highly satisfied with the quality. I broke the plier by putting a lot of pressure on it and twisting in the wrong direction so decided to buy another one. I couldn't find one with the same features so switch to Leatherman which I have had for 5-6 years. I recently ordered an emergency supply kit that came with a really cheap multi tool so decided to replace it with the Gerber Black Diesel. This definitely was not the same quality Gerber that I owned previously. in order to extract the screw driver bits I first had to open the knife blade and then the bits were so still I almost broke a finger nail trying to get one out of the slot. Then there is the same complaint on other reviews, ie; the black coating. Don't know what that is all about. Tried wiping it down with WD-40 but it still turns my fingers black. It is going in my emergency supply kit so will probably be alright for emergency use if I have to use my kit after an earthquake, severe storm or some other catastrophe event but for everyday use like my Leatherman? Not so much. My headline says it all. Quite Disappointed!
Get Gerber's Pro Scout / MP 600 instead
July 9, 2015
I purchased this recently after having some Gerber knives for a few years. They definitely make quality products (though I switched to Benchmade for my everyday knife) and they set a very reasonable price point for a US manufactured product.Unfortunately, these multi-pliers fall short. They seem much more cheaply made than others, with the pliers being attached with sheet metal pieces instead of being drilled and attached directly to the frame of the tool. This seems to cause the unwanted and excessive lateral play. Gerber's sliding mechanism always has some play, but in the Pro Scout/MP 600 this is minimal. Also, most of the tools seem to be stamped out of sheet metal, and in particular the "phillips" screwdriver is particularly weak. I had trouble with a basic drywall screw and would not trust the phillips to hold up. Additionally, none of the tools can accept the bit adapter that Gerber makes, which allows you to use any standard 1/4" drill/screw bit.The only advantage this tool seems to have over the Pro Scout is that the saw is more robust. If you want to cut wood with it fairly often, the saw blade is definitely superior to the replaceable jigsaw blades in the Pro Scout. Otherwise, I am very happy with the Pro Scout.
Great tool, other than the wire cutter
May 7, 2015
I have a couple other similar multipliers - a Leatherman Wave, and another Gerber one similar to this one. I forget the name of the other Gerber one, but it's the same style, but with a few different tools.Anyway - this one seems pretty nice. I've been using it almost every day at work since I got it. I think the only tool on it I haven't used yet is the saw. It feels sharp though, so I don't really have any doubts about it working. There are no crimpers on these pliers, which I find kind of odd. Almost all other multipliers have crimpers - omitting them seems like a strange choice. The #2 Phillips screwdriver is very thin - the same thickness as the other blades. It does seem to work well though as long as you don't need to apply a ton of torque with it. Making it thicker, like on my other Gerber multiplier, would require the removal of two tools to make room for it. Faced with the decision on which two tools you would get rid of to make a better screwdriver, I'd say they made a good compromise. The knife blade had a burr on it and required a couple passes on the stone. That isn't a big deal, really, but that is the first Gerber blade I've seen that required any work right out of the box. Hopefully that is just a fluke. The wire cutter on these is not very good. It cannot cut safety wire without damage, and I expect it would be damaged by something like fencing as well. Copper wire only for these cutters. They also cannot be resharpened if you do damage them - the overlap is so small that if you tried to put a new edge on them, they would not close all the way.
Not what they used to be.
May 7, 2015
I've been carrying Gerber multi-tools for years and use them for industrial maintenance applications multiple times per day. Honestly, I use one more in a month than most will in a lifetime. I've had leatherman's and other brands but none have ever equaled the Gerbers for toughness and ease of use. I bought this one as a replacement for a well worn 400 that was lost at work. Dispite my being a loyal Gerber man, I gave this one 3 stars because honestly this is no where near as well made as the others that I have owned. All of the blades are much thinner than they were on previous models. I was especially disappointed in the philips screwdriver. The others all had forged philips drivers that were roughly 1/4" square drive. In other words, they had actual philips drivers. This one has a "philips" driver that is stamped from sheet stock about the same thickness as the slotted drivers. Overall, it is just not as well made as previous models.

Acceptable Utility Light
September 22, 2017
It will work alright as a utility light, so it sits in the console of my truck. I wouldn't consider it a "tactical" light. At least in my case I don't know what's going to happen when I hit the switch. I might get the bright beam or I might get the strobe. If I did want to carry it in my pocket I'd have no way of knowing what the focus would be the next time I wanted to use it. The head of the light slides back and forth so easily that just dropping or pushing the light into your pocket would likely change the adjustment. It's about what you'd expect for the price.
and I really like my son’s LE adjustable flashlight
August 13, 2017
I need a flashlight for camping, and I really like my son’s LE adjustable flashlight. The problem is that it is black (as most seem to be), and I wanted a similar flashlight that was brightly colored, and thus easier to find.I found two orange flashlights: The Bonfire X and the J5 Tactical V1. Both were roughly the same price, so I bought one of each. The J5 is OK. With a single AA battery, it’s not very bright. It’s also a little on the small side, and might be a little uncomfortable for long-term use. I found the Bonfire X to be much better suited to my needs.
Good for the price but not great
August 12, 2017
I just got this today and it's a decent flashlight. If you read the last part you'll understand what kind of territorial setting I am in, but I got to use it in some general situations and here's my findings:Pros:It is brightIt's compact and easily put in a pocket and/or bagIt's tactical and could be used if needed for self-defenseCons:It's only bright when you start to zoom in. It's not a very good flood light even within 5 feet of you, even on the highest setting.Switching between high, low, and strobe can be annoying especially if you only need the brightest setting. If I use the high mode, I have to switch it on and off until it's back to where high mode is next.Overall, it's usable but I would not recommend it for walking at night in the desert or around town. It is more useful in closed spaces and when you need light in a specific area, such as, working on a car or in dark confined spaces.Living in a small town with an observatory means not many street lights in neighborhood if any at all. Being in the southwest means rattlesnakes and other nighttime animals. I'm also night blind.
Good quality. Bad flashlight modes
March 17, 2017
This flashlight feels good in quality. Everything is fine except one thing. There are 3 modes that the flashlight featured. First one is brighter, second is dimmer, and the third one is flashy. I think the flashy mode is extra, and I had to switch to that mode in order to get the brighter mode. Makes me sick everytime.
Bought two, one was DOA
September 3, 2016
Purchased two black flashlights for a camping trip this summer, unfortunately one was dead on arrival. Because i had purchased two i was able to swap parts in order to diagnose the problem. Seemed to be a dead led in one of the units. I'm taking off two stars because of the dead unit, the remainder of my review will be for the working unit.I've taken the flashlight on a few camping trips and have been really impressed with it. I also use the light for work, I am a pizza delivery boy and spend a lot of time in front of poorly lit houses. For the money i would say the light is an exceptional value. The light press for functions is a nice feature, i use the low light function frequently. Also the telescoping feature is easy to use and incredibly useful when trying to identify something in the distance, like a poorly illuminated house number. The belt clip works quite well too, the light doesn't feel bulky and I've never had it fall off my belt.Overall I'm somewhat satisfied, i like the flashlight that works. However I would be hesitant to recommend this product to a camper or fellow delivery driver as i received a dead unit
Good light in need of an LED upgrade.

I really wanted to rate this a 5 But that's not possible when a competitor beats you by almost a 100 lumens for a 1/3 of the cost.Pros: This light has a great feel and balance in your hand. The light pattern is adjustable. The clip is well placed. Changing modes is easy, just half press the switch after you turn it on.Cons: The J5 Tatical V1 Pro needs an upgraded LED.I tested a Cree Q5 (package of 5 for $18.99) against this light using the same 14500 battery freshly charged in both. Almost 100 lumens less from the J5. Cree Q5 = 392 lumens. J5 = 303 lumens. For the maximum lumens buy the Cree Q5 Ultra Fire. Smaller form but brighter with same modes.Sold under many different labels. For the look and feel of a tactical light in small form factor and a good light, buy the J5 V1 Pro.

MEH!
May 12, 2017
Utter junk compared to a Leatherman. Pliers are difficult at best to get to the usable position. The tools and blades are not very sharp and they do not hold an edge. Spend the extra loot on a nice Leatherman and you will be hhapp
I got a dud
February 8, 2017
This had to be returned. The finish was not well applied. It left my hands black. I tried to wipe the excess off the tool but it just kept coming off, to the point where the stainless was starting to show. Very nice tool otherwise.
not satisfied
January 14, 2016
the pros:- feels sturdy- looks good- gets most of the jobs donethe bad:- when you unfold the knives the blades are on the inside, which limits your range of motion by a lot ( -1.5 stars)- the unlocking mechanism for the knives and other stuff is not convenient; when you pull it down with your thumb you're blocking the blade with your other fingers because of the way you are grabbing the device ( -1.5 stars)- pulling out the pliers is also inconvenient and you might have to battle it for a few seconds ( -1 star)- it's true that it stains your hands black a bit (not a big deal for me though)TL;DR: if your job/life depends on this, keep searching. if not but don't want to spend > $100, then buy it.
Poor quality, cheap plastic
June 7, 2015
Immediately upon opening the package, it became apparent that Gerber tools are not what they used to be. The plier mechanism wouldn't actuate properly, several other mechanisms appear to be constructed of cheap plastic, and the black finish began rubbing off on my hand.I ordered this directly from Amazon, so no, I did not receive a fake Chinese knockoff. It could just be this particular model, sometimes tools labeled "tactical" are meant to ride a trend of attempting to be "hard" or whatever.

My first try at a moderate-level multi-tool, and I've returned it. While it seems to be okay in execution, the design is... well, pretty awful. The pliers extend through the nose of the handle, not by opening the handle completely open as most multi-tools. That means that to open up the other tools (which are all inside the handles, not on both sides like most multi-tools), you have to open the handles, extend the pliers to allow you to open the handles the rest of the way, open the tool of your choice, then retract the pliers and close the handles together. Not an easy, fast, or convenient way of getting to the tools.
Just Fancy Pliers
July 11, 2014
The diesel, as its name implies, is basically a fancy set of pliers. The quality and durability is okay. Its deceptively heavy and the case is larger than a Leatherman Super Tool.If you use pliers 85% of the time, its decent since it has other tools in the handle. The other tools, however, are hard to get to and the device will not fully close. The black finish is annoying and rubs off.It lacks the ease of use and functionality of the five Leatherman multi tools I have. While the pliers slide out easily after a break in period, that function is off set by its limitations. It will get relegated to the kitchen knife drawer, or, perhaps the truck glove compartment. Sorry... Thanks for reading.

Disappointment
September 21, 2017
soo im used to my ultrafire i had but lost it.. decided to try this lil guy soley because of the 12,000 plus reviews almost entirely 5stars... i am not sure ive ever seen a product w this many reviews....figured i couldnt go wrong.. well let me tell ya i order A lot of items online majority from amazon, but this lil light is a joke i dont know what the hype is but do yourself a favor if u read this skip to a different flashlight i mean it works just was expecting a lot more from soooooooo many great reviews and i was disappointed w its preformance...
Terrible Product !!!
September 14, 2017
I ordered this because of the reviews, but honestly I don't see why it has so many good reviews. I'm not impressed with it at all, not even sure why it is named tactical this is far of being a tactical light. It has a weird zoom to adjust the beam the bulb is too far in, and the light is not pure white more like bluish. I had cheapest home depot led flashlight that works better than this. I'm returning this and def won't recommend this product.
NOT WORTH 12$ EACH!! DIM FLASHLIGHT
August 17, 2017
Bought these (2 of them) with very high hopes. But unfortunately I really could of gone to dollar general to get a cheap plastic flashlight. I don't know where they get 300 lumens.. More like 80-100 at most with a new AA battery. One of the 2 I got couldn't change modes. Only on and off. Both were dim flashlights compared to other 12$ flashlights on Amazon.NOT WORTH 12$ A POP... Returned and refunded.
Move along. Nothing to see here.
July 30, 2017
This has done nothing but go in my pocket and come out of it and within a couple days black paint already had rubbed off the flashlight. I bought this for a tactical flashlight and lets just say it's being replaced two weeks in because the output isn't that great (my fault for not getting something higher I know). But really, the flashlight I'm not happy with. It just seems cheaply made and in a tactical situation I fear the strobe will not disorientate as well as I'd like. If you want something to carry I recommend looking at something else.
Like walking in the woods
June 8, 2017
I dont want to be too critical.... but you can buy the same for less.... as in a $3 dollar 9 led light at your local hardware store. It works but was too weak for my uses. Like walking in the woods. It did make a decent inspection light for under a dump truck hood but it only has the range of a sword.... a short sword. That is with regular aa battery but im not paying more for bateries than the light costs when my my 25 buck maglight pro... suposedly less than 300 lumens.... mops the floor with it range wise. If you need to find your keys in the dark or figure out where to put the key it works but if you need a actual flashlight spent ten more bucks. Imho
Very disappointing. Not 300 lumens.
June 19, 2016
Very disappointing. I don't know what "max 300 lumens" means, but this flashlight is a lot dimmer than a 200 lumen flashlight, and casts a very small circle of light. If you focus the beam to make it a few feet across, it just casts that typical dim, blue-ish light that small LED flashlights make. It's just as dim and probably the same as the appx. $6 version that's on here as well. I gave it 2 stars because the description and presentation give the impression that it's actually 300 lumens (or bright at all), and that it's somehow a step up from the cheaper but similar-looking lights on Amazon. However, it's a perfectly adequate pocket-sized but fairly dim LED flashlight.

Flimsy!
September 7, 2017
Flimsy! I hate it! Back to the drawing board, and I won’t be looking to Gerber for another. I love tools. Having the proper tool for the task is important to me. So the implements that I store in the bug out bag have to be proven reliable. This isn’t it.

What a piece of garbage. The spring on the scissors pops out and does not work. The pliers stick and take multiple tries to open. Oh, and the black finish coats your hands. I even tried wiping it down, but black powder gets on everything.I have owned the suspension model for about ten years and wanted a spare for the car, but this was returned immediately. It seems quality control isn't what it used to be.
Didn't get what I ordered
January 4, 2017
Ordered the Diesel, got the Bushman instead which is half the price and fewer utensils. Appear to be instructions in the box that don't apply to multi-tool, and Gerber box has been relabeled a couple of times. Very disappointed.

March 4, 2016
I am a Gerber fan, but the Gerber diesel i am not.I own the Gerber strong arm 5 stars, the Gerber Bear Grylls axe hatchet. And the smaller version of the Gerber multi tool military style. The diesel can opener is harder to use and leaves jagged edges on the outside of the can. And I stripped out the Phillips head first day of work. It will not work for me at work, camping or my bag !!!!
Not Gerber quality, be careful
February 5, 2016
PARTS MADE IN CHINA - assembled in USA. Sloppy workings. Hard to open and does not close completely. Pliers need a pair of pliers to pull out.I own a 100% made-in-USA Gerber tool that exceeds a 5 star rating. This is not even close to the quality I expect from Gerber.
Sucks butt.....
July 17, 2015
The paint or coating got all over my hand as soon as I took it out of the box. Once I got all the stuff off there were scratches all over it as if had been used and the nose was super loose. Definitely would not recommend buying from here.

Might just be my bad luck....?
October 17, 2017
Can't tighten lid too tight or else I can't turn it off... the spring seems too large for this particular flashlight. Even after putting in new batteries, the light may or may not turn on or will spontaneously stop working The metal clip is heavy duty, looks cool, but it does not function properly and I have yet another flashlight to add to the "crappy flashlights" pile. Disappointed and unsatisfied.
Bad Quality
August 17, 2017
I used it for my camping last weekend for the first time. The quality is really bad. After half a hour , the button at the bottom became insensitive. I cant turn on the light unless I push the button so hard. Later on, the button didn't work completely. When I press the button, the light didn't turn on. Then I just leave it in my pocket, and somehow it turned on suddenly a few minutes later. This happens several time that night. Now, it became insensitive again. I don't think it worth $15, except the cooler appearance, it works worse that my friend's $5 flash flight.
Cute toy light, not a tactic light
August 4, 2017
Cute light, far from tactical. Body of light is light weight aluminum. It's a slide function to adjust beam so the slightest tap moves the head of the light. If you go extreme narow beam it becomes a box casted light instead of a tight circle like it should

May 22, 2017
out of the box the lens looked scratched up. I put two different batteries (new) in it and on its highest level would not come even close to my 205 lumens flash light. I may have received a faulty unit or they just are not 300 lumens (as advertised.)
Nothing But Garbage
May 2, 2017
Absolute garbage! Bought several of these late December 2015 and none have made it into 2017. Horrible battery contact undesirably cycles through the several light modes when turned on. Not even close to 300 lumens, the 60 lumens mode on the Surfire Sidekick is just a tad bit dimmer than the J5 Tactical V1-Pro and the moving parts are unnecessary, the head always needs to be tightened over and over again. The need for rechargable batteries for it to work is also unnecessary, again it's not even close to being 300 lumens. Spare your time and money and get a SureFire Sidekick, it's a true 300 lumens USB rechargable flashlight.
Bummed
March 14, 2017
The first light I received had an issue with the button where it wouldn't depress and stay on. They sent me another light replacement and the second light has the same problem. I like the size and when it is on (when I hold the button down) it is bright. Wish it was more reliable however.
