Just Right
May 13, 2017
Had to buy a new Leatherman recently, and the model I carried for many years is no longer available. The Wungman is a good balance of size, features and price. Compared with my previous tool: I like the spring-loaded pliers, and I like the bigger scissors; but I miss the saw blade. And I don't have much use for a 1-inch ruler. But the tool is rock solid, very well-made, nicely machined and finished, no rough edges, no wobble. Very happy with it. Would buy again, gladly recommend to others.
Good so far
March 27, 2017
I bought this to replace one that I got for Christmas and somehow lost in less than a month (which has since been found). I haven't gotten a chance to really put it to the test on anything yet besides a few screws. I'm not sure if it is because of a different manufacturing location or what, but this one is a lot less smooth than my other. The pliers do not spring back open after closing, which is a minor annoyance. The scissors are also a bit difficult to open, requiring a pretty decent amount of force in order to lock at the "out" position. I might be able to lube it for a bit smoother action but I CBA at the moment. That being said, everything is pretty much as advertised. It feels sturdy and should last a long time. I'm storing it in my car long term. I really like the nylon sheath, which seems a bit like a one-size-fits-all but works just fine. At the time of my purchase, the sheath didn't add anything to the cost, so no reason not to pick it up if it's still that way.
This is pretty much the bestest knife ever
September 9, 2016
This is pretty much the bestest knife ever. One-handed access to a combo straight/serrated knife with the right hand and scissors with the left, no more tools than really necessary for generic use, a sensible grouping of tools (ie, screwdriving on one side, misc on the other), a belt-clip (though I'll still be storing mine in a holster), and SPRING-LOADED pliers. That last feature alone would make this a winner. And for those who are concerned (Gerber-users): The pliers *are* comfortable to use; the handles' edges are smooth and sufficiently wide for a strong grip. The only improvements I can think of:* Make the knife easier to slide out.* Put rulings on the handle, not the file.* Help the scissors to better snap into place.
Wingman and Charge face to face
January 30, 2015
I bought the Wingman because several times almost lost my beloved Charge. So I decide to get this for my EDC and the Charge just in certain cases. I must say I’m beyond satisfied, I was expecting much less quality compared to the Charge but the certain is the next. The Charge Is by far the best multitool for me with the best quality, so in the scale where Charge is the best the Wingman is pretty good. When I first saw it I tough it was much more small, well you can check in the pictures.Pros:For me the best price vs features of all models.I love the scissors which are better than the Charge. The package opener has become my third most used tool behind the pliers and the scissors. The Spring-loaded pliers are awesome. The combo knife is nice and sharp. No safety torx to open or maintenance your multitool.Cons:The ruler is useless. The screwdrivers are good but I’d really liked to see the lock bit. Other thoughts. It is not the first time that someone says this but Leatherman should do one or both of the next things.1. Offer spare parts of their models so the enthusiast can modify or customize their tools.2. Create a model in which you could choose your tools, probably from their website. And to be able to buy different parts and we decided when or how use them, for exampleI never use the saw in the Charge or the ruler in the wingman but I really use the bit lock and the package opener, and during weekends I used a lot the knife and the bottle opener.
All the basic tools you might need right in your pocket
October 30, 2013
Leatherman is (I think) the original multi-tool. While they may be imitated, they are not duplicated. I have carried a Leatherman "micro" tool for many years and it has always served me reliably for small tasks. Recently, I needed some full sized tools for tasks too big for my little micro tool. So, I got my first full-sized Leatherman. Within only a couple weeks of receiving the Wingman I have used nearly every tool on it. The full sized need nose pliers are fantastic and as effective and easy to use as my comparably sized single purpose tools. The Wingman is extremely well engineered. Please do read the included owners manual thoroughly to understand how all the tools are deployed, locked and unlocked as there are some less than obvious features built into this tightly packed unit. For example, the scissors do have an opening assist spring to keep the blades apart but it does not engage until the scissors are fully extended. The partially serrated knife blade has a lock that does have a little "unlock" logo stamped into it.The overall weight and thickness of the Wingman are a bit much for my pocket for constant carry. The clip keeps it firmly in place when I do carry it. I expect to leave this in my car most of the time as that is when I expect to need it.It would be nice if a case was included, but I probably wouldn't use it anyway so I suppose I should thank Leatherman for not bundling unnecessary accessories and increasing the price.Update 2017:Having carried and used this Leatherman for everything from delicate photo equipment adjustments to ripping out rusty nails to slicing sausage I can say without exception that this is the best multi-tool I have ever used. I have used several other brands of multitool ranging from cheap knock-offs to expensive name-brands. Not one can compare to the ease of use and satisfying design of the Wingman. This is the best.
How to choose an economical multitool
May 9, 2013
There have been excellent reviews of both the Leatherman Wingman and Rebar, as well as all the others, but because there are so many models, it can be hard to choose which one to buy. I hope to help in the choice of economical "Full-size" multitools, as Leatherman calls a number of models. The "full size" line of tools are all about 100mm long when folded, and include the Charge TTi, the New Wave, the Rebar, and the Wingman. The first two are much more expensive than the latter two, and I will only discuss the Rebar and Wingman.Leatherman multitools can be further subdivided between blade-in and blade-out designs. In the former, you must open the tool to have access to the knife blade(s); in the latter they are available just as they would be in a pocket knifeThe Rebar is a blade-in design; the Wingman is blade-out. If your most common use of the tool will be for cutting with the knife blade(s), then the Wingman would be more convenient. The Rebar has a much superior shear-type wire-cutter with replaceable blades. The Wingman has a butt-type or pinch-type wire-cutter. Both work, but the Rebar works noticeably better, especially for hard wire. The Rebar has two large blades, a plain blade and a serrated blade; the Wingman has only a single combination blade, but it is instantly available because of the blade-out design. The Rebar has a full-size double-sided file with a serrated edge that can serve as a hack saw. Wingman has what can only be described as a toy, a single-sided, half length file. I could consider it worthless. The Rebar has a full-size wood saw; the Wingman has none. The Wingman, however, has an excellent scissor, the best of the whole line, while the Rebar has no scissor. The Wingman's pliers are spring loaded; not so the Rebar. All the blades, even the small screw-drivers, of the Rebar lock; only the knife and scissor of the Wingman lock. A negative, however, of the Rebar is that the lock-release levers protrude enough to catch if you carry it in your pocket. The Rebar comes with a nylon sheath, while the Wingman has no sheath but does have a good retentive pocket clip. Also the Wingman has a somewhat more rounded shape at the end so it carries better than any of the other full-size multitools in the pocket. Both Rebar and Wingman have a good Phillips screw driver, but the Rebar's is superior.Unlike the Rebar, the Wingman has no awl.At around 22 dollars the Wingman is the best value; the Rebar with sheath is around 37.Which to buy? If you want a multitool small enough to carry in your pocket, one that you will keep in your desk or kitchen junk drawer, if you will mostly use the knife, and find a scissor handy, I'd recommend the Wingman. If, however, you want a more fully competent multitool, that can compare well with the much more expensive Wave and Charge, a tool that includes excellent file, awl, and superior wire cutter, choose the Rebar. What if price is no object? I'd still probably recommend the Rebar. It is noticeably lighter (191 vs 241 g) than the New Wave, and it is 3 mm less in breadth and thickness, which seems little until you hold the two together. The Wave and Charge are simply too big for even occasional pocket use.All of the multitools mentioned in this review are of high quality and will last a long time. Some reviews have said that Leathermans are not made like they used to be, and a review here compares unfavorably the Rebar with the Supertool. (They are similar in design but the Supertool is considerably bigger.) In any case, I have an "old Supertool", made when they still forged "USA" into the pliers, and for the life of me I can see no difference in quality. Certainly the wire cutter of the Rebar is superior. (Incidentally, they are still made in the USA, but a stupid California law keeps them from stamping it on the tool.)So, just buy one, or several, they are all good. I have one in each car, pack, kitchen tool drawer, backpack, etc. I guess you can have too many Lethermen, but I have not gotten there yet!

Easy access budget EDC multitool that can work
August 31, 2017
I purchased this tool last Sept. and have been carrying it as my daily EDC since then. Before I get into the pros and cons I need you to understand we are talking about Leatherman's introductory line of multitools, so automatically the toolset won't be as nice as on the Wave, Surge or their other top line tools. In my day to day experience I find the Wingman to be helpful, especially because I can carry it in my pocket for quick access rather than having a bulky sheath/pouch on my belt. The knife blade is adequate; its quite sharp and I don't mind the combo edge, however I always carry a pocket knife with me. The file and can opener blades are decent and usable (the file on my Rebar is much nicer), the package opener blade is absolutely brilliant! nice usable tool. The Screw driver blades are on the large size but useful. I strongly recommend caring the Leatherman Micra as a counterpoint to the Wingman if possible. You will find that it nicely completes your toolset at a budget price. Honestly if my Rebar had a pocket clip I would carry that instead. If you are new to multitools and just want a budget friendly EDC tool to try out the Wingman maybe your tool. For more experienced folks who can afford a better option you should go with the Rebar.
You get what you pay for.
August 4, 2017
The wingman is a decent mutlitool for the price. Don't expect the best quality when you're paying for a budget mutlitool.Everything works well on mine, the only problem I have with mine is that the handles have a lot of play in them when they're in the closed position. Even when trying to pull the knife out one handed, the handle have movement.Other than that fault, the tool is pretty good. At 7.5oz and a relatively solid pocketclip, the wingman sits in your pocket a lot better than the Wave.
Small, light
February 26, 2017
Great option for everyday carry. Belt clip is great, many useful everyday tools for small tasks. Will not replace their larger multi tools, or task specific tools but this has most of what you might need each day. Being able to access the knife and scissors with the unit closed makes it a very convenient and stable tool. Easy to open the knife blade one handed right from your pocket. As far as the tools themselves, interesting choices. I would rather have a saw than the wire stripper, and make the 'file' full length of the grip. The flat screwdriver is a bit thick for a small multi tool, prohibiting use on thin screws but will reduce damage to the tool. If you keep in mind the limitations, this is a good EDC tool. It is noticeably thinner lighter than the Wave, though the plier heads appear exactly the same. Think of this as a beefed up and more practical swiss army knife rather than a military grade multi tool. They make other tools for that.
Great for price, but you get what you pay for. Perfect basic leatherman.
October 29, 2016
Great leatherman for the price, however the quality is not what I am looking for. knife and scissors are liner locked. The inside tools are pressure locked instead of the Tbar lock on the wave. This lock is similar to the typical Tbar lock but I believe it is actually pretty good, I really liked it. The body has way too much side play as others have mentioned. It really kills the feel of quality when you try to open the blade and the whole thing starts twisting. If you're not looking for anything serious, get it. However I need a heavier duty leatherman for work so I will be getting the Surge instead, at three times the price.
Good tool, compare before buying
June 1, 2016
Lighter than my leatherman Wave, but less versatile. The wave was so heavy I found it an annoyance to carry in my pocket because it always reminded you it was there. This has pliers that spring open, the Wave didn't. The wave has 3 blades and a large file you can access with one hand, this has one. But do you really need a wood saw and huge file? I thought "why not" then cursed the added weight as they were never used. The wave has lock outs on every tool, this doesn't. This comes with an attached belt clip, the wave comes with a pouch due to its weight. You need to compare multi tools and find the one that is right for you. I am enjoying my Wingman so far. Also, the best part of owning a leatherman is their no BS warranty. If it breaks, they replace it. Period. American made quality.
Most useful collection of tools.
July 10, 2015
I keep surrendering my multi tool at airport security because I forget to take them out of my carry-on. (In some countries 6cm blade length or less is allowed while in the U.S. It typically doesn't matter howminuscule the steel is.I originally looked for a newer tool in this series but ended up trying the wingman this time. There is no case included but a clip is attached to the tool. You can remove it if necessary, but I find it useful with the clip.As for the tools, both blade and scissors are locked when extracted. The lock isn't obvious how to release, just look for the lock symbol where to push for release. The other tools are not lockable. There is enough information on the number of tools, but for me the (very sharp) blade is the "workhorse" of the Wingman followed by plies and the scissors. Sure, the screwdrivers come in handy every now and then on a trip, but at home they stay put (unlike the blade). My only "complaint" is the rather plain sheet metal "housing" which albeit cleverly designed doesn't make for an elegant design.

"Ok" Little Multi Tool
August 10, 2017
Mine came very tight and desperately needed adjustments. The wire cutters are poor. The scissors have a bar spring that only works if the scissors are fully locked open. The knife blade is very thin and cheap. But the package opener is a nice feature. The whole tool fits nice in the hand and the spring action pliers are a good size for small jobs.
The leatherman multi tools are great I use mine for fishing pulling hooks cutting line ...
July 23, 2017
This is my second wingman. I gave the first to my brother. The leatherman multi tools are great I use mine for fishing pulling hooks cutting line etc. but this came loose. Meaning the tools on the left side of the pic came very loose and move without being pulled out. The screw isn't tight enough. Which isn't a big deal and wasn't the case with the first one I bought. I took off 2 stars because of this because u need special bits to tighten them.
Missing tool.
December 8, 2016
I received the Wingman yesterday. It seems like a nice multitool, but I have not used it yet. I am disappointed that it did not come as advertised though. It is advertised as having a package opener and a can opener. Mine had two package openers and no can opener. I expected better.
It's a Leatherman but not what I expected.
December 2, 2016
This is my 4th Leatherman in 17 years. My previous Leatherman was a Pulse which I misplaced a couple of weeks ago. Tried to find another although I knew it was discontinued but no luck. I ordered the Wingman as a replacement and received it today and I was a little disappointed. A little heavy for my pocket on a daily basis, the scissors are not spring return (I use it a lot) and the quality when compared to my older Pulse was found wanting.I'll look through again and see if there is another model I'd prefer. Can't be without my Leatherman for too long, I'll get withdrawal symptoms.
Good product, has a lot of grease all over it :(
April 13, 2016
The item came with a lot of grease all over the different hinges, mainly on the player head. This problem does not interfere with the actual usability of the product (which is amazing by the way) but I STILL get grease all over my hands when I work with this tool. The Wave does not have spring latched pliers which I find to be REALLY cool but I think it's just personal preference. This leatherman is very expensive but you really get the quality that you're paying for. If you're looking for a cheaper alternative: Gerber makes really nice multi-tools and the leatherman wingman and sidekick are both GREAT little multi-tools for a way cheaper price but less tools (I have both as backups).
Ok for the money
September 17, 2013
I actually own a Wave and think its a little bulky for EDC. I use it everyday at work multiple times a day, but I mostly only need the pliers, screwdrivers, scissors, and knife. The Wingman has all those tools and spring loaded pliers (I really wish the Wave had this), so I thought here is a great compromise between tools and lighter weight. After using the Wingman about a week, it will be going to auction. Although certainly lighter and less bulky, It is not nearly as well built as the Wave. When I use a tool it feels like the whole thing is "twisting" in my palm, not a solid feeling at all. In my opinion this is not designed for every day working use and I can't recommend it for that.To be fair, I should have guessed as much. It is 1/2 the cost of the Wave. For the twenty dollar price, I guess I could recommend it for light occasional use, or maybe for an emergency bag. It comes down to knowing what you are getting and what your demands are. Just know there is a big quality difference between the Wingman and Wave, not simply a different tool set.If this is your first Leatherman or multitool, you may actually be impressed. If you already own a better quality one, you may have a hard time "downgrading" like I did. Meanwhile I'll stick with less than 1.8 oz extra weight of my Wave. I wish I could work for Leatherman and create the "perfect" EDC multitool because it doesn't seem the current manufacturers are going to. Heres a clue: take the frame style of the Wingman, make it QUALITY, and then be able to mix/match what ever tools you need with it from the website. I can create my own shoes and even vehicle options, why not a Leatherman?

You can do better
August 2, 2017
I like the fact it's made in USA but not comfortable to use
Not really good
June 21, 2017
Flat head is too fat if it make sense, wan't fit in most of the screws, Phillips is useless cause its pretty much flat. Was using tip of the file for flat screws. Lock mechanism is a joke, absolutely impractical. Clip broke of 2 month later.
Leatherman's quality seems questionable to me now, pot metal or stainless ?
March 14, 2017
Started off great, I own both the Surge and Wingman, and working as a technician these leather and come in handy. The surge has everything you need in one package, but it's heavy as hell, yanks down on your belt pretty good. So this wingman seemed like a good fit, it was definitely much lighter, no removable apex bits but it had a Phillips/flat/knife/pliers which usually can get me through a shift. I didn't pay much mind to the fact that only two weeks in the belt clip deformed after light usage and this became a "pockets only" carry so I wouldn't lose them somewhere critical. And tonight as I was undoing some very light 1/4 turn buttons the tip snapped off of one of the tools. I can't use the flat heads on these much, it's usually too thick for basic fasteners so I've had to use the small tip on the measurement tool that ends at a flathead like end..two fails in just a few light months of usage, I consider it a waste of money at this point.
Feels like a cheap Chinese knockoff of what you would expect ...
September 27, 2016
Leatherman has sure dropped there quality on this one. Feels like a cheap Chinese knockoff of what you would expect from Leatherman.
eh
September 22, 2015
The wirecutters don't work because one side of the pliers was bent and the scissors did not come spring assisted. The two features I chose this option for. Extremely disappointed. I don't know if its a defect but I sure don't want to buy another one just to find out that its not.
Here's My Two Cents...
December 8, 2014
This is one of the worst Leathermans I've ever handled. There is a lot of slop in the locks for the tools and blades, and it feels very cheap overall. Yes, I understand that it's a value-oriented multi tool, and I understand that at this price point you can't expect super great quality. If I were you, I would pony up a little extra cash and get a nicer Leatherman like a Wave or a Charge.

Dull looking tool

Probably a knock-off. Dull looking tool. Doesn't look like the original Leatherman. The spring scissors does't work. Very disappointed.
I love Leatherman. Have about 6 of them
August 27, 2017
Scissors are a joke. Surprised someone would sign off on this design. I love Leatherman. Have about 6 of them. Give them as presents too. These are cheesy.
Shorted me the sheath.
April 26, 2016
Leatherman was fine but did not include the nylon sheath as advertised.
The item is not brand new
December 15, 2015
The item arrived with small scratches on the handles. Doesn't seem to be brand new, looks like it was a demo sample in the retail store or a refurbished item. Lots of fingerprints everywhere, some dirt inside the screw heads. However the blades are unworn so it doesn't seem the be a used item. Leatherman Wave arrived same day from a different sale, it was in blister package and is clean and shiny.Bought this wingman as a gift and don't have enough time to process an exchange. Since I've borrowed it for only $27 I'll leave it as a backup tool, however I'm very disappointed.
don't waste your money
December 29, 2014
Returned this item. Cheaply made, screwdriver is way too huge to actually use.
