Nice, works great, and the price can't be beat.

Works good. Was able to make PDFs out of several documents easily. Did have a few documents shift a little while copying but not enough to cause any issues with the final product. The software that comes with it works just fine for making PDFs but does little besides that, which is all I really needed. You have a choice while copying multiple sheets to make them separate PDFs or just one big one with several pages. The scans a clear and produces easy to read PDFs, great for going paperless. I have tried a few photos, and while they are not as good as the original photos they are fine for images that you are only planning to make 5x7 inch prints out of.
Works great, inexpensive, easy to use, great quality.

This little scanner works great, and is very simple to use. It's fast and the batteries (name brand batteries are included!) last a long time. I added a leftover microSD card we had lying around, formatted it, and now there's enough space for a lifetime's worth of scans. It's worked well with all kinds of documents, even small photos and business cards. And you don't need any added software -- just plug it in after scanning and your computer thinks it's a thumb drive. Even works great with most recent Android phones using an OTG cable! There are only two minor nits I could pick -- not enough to knock off a star. 1) I wish there was a way to set the default scan mode to grayscale PDF instead of color JPG. It's two button presses when I turn it on, but it's mildly annoying. 2) The computer software is pretty limited. There's very little reason to install the software, other than it does allow you to scan several pages in a row and turn them into one multipage PDF.
Quickly scan, merge and compress pdfs (smallpdf.com) - see how in this review
October 29, 2015
Extremely convenient and easy to use. I have a printer/scanner that you have to lift cover, wait till it scans (forever it seems), lift cover, put next page down etc. Can take a while if doing multiple pages. This little puppy scans relatively quickly. Once documents are scanned, just plug in the cord to your computer, open the files and you can drag, drop to a folder on your computer. If you scan as pdf's you can use the free online tools on smallpdf.com - you can quickly and easily merge pdf files (drag and drop) and then you can compress the file - no software required! I bought this for our business so that if we need to make an electronic copy of a customer contract, we can just scan the contract on the jobsite. I have found I like to use it in the office for multiple pages (now that I discovered smallpdf.com) so I may have to get one for myself! We've only been using it for a couple of weeks, so not sure of durability, etc in the long run - will update review later if there are any issues. Oh, when I first bought the scanner I read the instructions, etc, but it was about a month before I got around to buying the microSD card, by then I totally forgot it would only take up to 32GB microSD, and I got the 64GB microSD by mistake - the scanner won't work - says card is full or something. Just heads up so you don't make same mistake as I did.
This is a great device.

I scanned over 2,500 pictures.
About 1,000 in 90 minutes.
The "default" rate was 9 mis-scans on the 1st 1,000 photos.
Super fast, accurate and color true.
I scanned directly to a SanDisk 32GB MicroSDHC and then transferred to my computer later.
I only experienced problems with a handful of photos which were processed on a "gold standard" paper which would not feed thorugh the device.
I scanned everything from small photos from the 1960's to 8 1/2 by 11 sheets all in JPEG with High Def.
The batteries lasted for about 1,000 photos and the MicroSDHC never came close to being full.
A definate buy expecially since the local shops are getting $1.00/scan and the big drug stores due 35 for $4.00 with lousy quality.
Great scanner
January 29, 2014
I purchased this to help in scanning all of my Mom's photos so we could have them saved in case any thing happened. I was concerned when I got it because it was battery operated but this scanner is awesome!I scanned over 600 pictures in just a little over an hour and they are good quality scans. I would highly recommend this to anyone considering purchasing an inexpensive, easy to use scanner.

Great for scanning long receipts
June 6, 2016
Great for scanning long receipts. I was able to use it with File Center PRO by making some minor setting changes in the program.Scans very nice quality scans. However it likes to pull paper towards the left so you have to guide the paper as it scans. One thing I wish it would do is scan faster. Even scanning a receipt at 100dpi is scans slow. It also has a Kengston lock slot which is nice for business center owners who want to secure it.

I had a little difficulty getting it to work initiallly, but I called Visioneer's techs and they were amazing! They walked me through things very quickly and in no time, I was scanning all of my receipts and putting them in individual files. I love it!
Very nice for the price.

February 14, 2017
Purchased this for my mother to scan old pictures so she would have digital copies. I ran about 80 of my pictures through, and some had issues feeding through the scanner. I had to pull a few through. I think it has to do with the picture guide and trying to make it just right, otherwise the picture will not be straight and then get caught. Overall the images were nice though and it doesn't require being connected to a computer, so my Mom can sit and watch TV while she scans a ton of pictures from the couch instead of sitting in front of a computer.
Good purchase!
December 16, 2016
So far, so good. With about 100 pics scanned so far, a couple had some weird lines/distortions, but only around the edge of the picture. Since I'll be keeping all the original photos, I'm not really bothered by the minor distortion since it doesn't seem to affect the best part of the photo. The device is light weight, extremely quiet, and fast. If it came with a power cord, I'd have given it five stars. I don't know how many times I'll have to replace the batteries to scan all the photos I have.
Okay for the price
August 5, 2016
I like this scanner, it is fast and crisp. Here are the 3 cons on this.1) It needs a MicroSD card that is not larger than 32 MB to function2) Battery life. it seems to suck up energy. They could have provided power adapter facility eliminate this3) USB connection. I am not sure if I am doing this correctly, but when I have this unit connected USB, it will not scan. it is a pain to remove / plug the cable every time you need to transfer the files.Besides these, this is a great little unit.
Fast and easy to use, oversimplified software and no driver support in other programs
December 29, 2015
I bought this for scanning receipts for work, and it does the job very quickly and easily. The software is oversimplified, though, and the driver doesn't seem to be a typical scanner device driver that I can use in a different/better application. I have stacks of receipts to scan, and I can't save each one to its own file automatically -- the software treats them like separate pages in a single document, and I have to manually save each page as a unique file. It's not difficult, but it adds a lot of extra steps to an otherwise painless process.I bought it due to the lower price than other devices with a decent rating, but for my purposes, I would be willing to spend a few bucks more and get something with a standard driver and/or better software.
A Simple, Effective, PnP Device
December 19, 2014
Performs as claimed right out of the box. Quietly and quickly - 3-4 seconds at most - scans an 8.5x11 printed sheet to a searchable pdf file. JPEG and DPI options for fotoz. Setup was simple and fast. Small, lightweight, and sturdy so will travel well. Web download of software needed for scanning directly to puter via provided USB cable [device has that weirdly shaped small connector port {the one that has little 'ears' on the connector}] went smoothly tho not quite as per the directions. Could have used the provided cd if I had a reader. Ditto for the Evernote cd. Comes with a cleaning pad, white calibration sheet, USB cable, 4 AA batteries, and a drawstring carrying sack that is barely large enough for the scanner. Will accept - tho not provided with - a micro sd card up to 32gb. This model does not have wireless which would be nice if not so pricey. With the micro sd card and batteries can be used w/o a puter. Have yet to try that.
Great portable scanner; scan directly to PDF with no computer
April 5, 2014
Perfect for a scanner that you can use without firing up the laptop. Although a cell phone these days can serve some of the functionality, a "real" scanner that scans without fuss is preferable to that for my needs. Compared to the Brother DS-920W, the only disadvantage I see is this does not scan duplex. But it is smaller than the brother, the front panel controls are simpler and more informative, and it uses AA batteries rather than a proprietary lithium. Meaning you will be using this thing long after your other device can't hold a charge and you can't find a battery for it. At first I would have preferred SD to micro SD storage, but then thinking how many mobile devices and tablets have a micro slot it makes more sense the way these folks did it. Quality of build is exceptional; it feels much more robust than the rather "creaky" brother unit. Now the only negative I have found. When powered off, the settings return to the default (jpg, low res, color). So if you want a mono, pdf, high resolution you have 3 buttons to press. Not a show stopper by any means, but the only thing on the interface I think the designers missed. And as to the Brother...I had purchased a Brother DS-920DW previous to this. Unfortunately, that unit died the day after I gave it the first test. It acted like a bad battery, and was going to order that rather than go through the hassle of a return. Go figure, Brother does not sell the batteries. At least not anywhere easily found... they show them, but do not offer them in the web store. So while I dealt with that return, I decided to try the Instascan. It is the better product.

Road Warrior Scanner

Works great generally. Occasionally it does not automatically start scanning, but this may be a factor of my old computer more than the scanner. The product it makes is a very decent scan and it's certainly portable and inexpensive. I'd recommend it.
Works great for sub $100 scanner
September 22, 2016
I see the nay sayers and some not so good reviews, but I tend to think a bit more and if you think you are going to get $1000 quality from a sub $100 scanner you are just kidding yourself. This works great for intended purpose, just quick scans and convenience of an inexpensive scanner that fits anywhere on desk.
I love the convenience of having this small scanner
July 29, 2016
I love the convenience of having this small scanner. I needed it for an online class I was taking over the summer, and it made uploading my documents so much easier. The only issue I have had with it is that occasionally it doesn't want to feed one side of the paper...we have found that running card stock through it a few times will remedy this. Also, occasionally the software will freeze up or not start up correctly. A simple end task from ctrl+alt+del will fix this. Minor problems for me, made smaller by the convenience and price for such a useful product.
Cheap Scanner Does the Job, Usually..
May 11, 2016
This scanner works pretty well. It is quick to set up and scans documents rapidly, but the scans turn out a little dark sometimes.Pros:-Cheap-Quick to scan/setup-Small FootprintCons:-Scans aren't the best quality-Some turn out too dark or the edges get cut off fairly easily
Great price.
February 20, 2016
Bought this to replace my broke "Neat" scanner. It works great with my MacBook Pro. I didn't give 5 stars cause it took me a while to figure out I had to download a file from the support page at [...]. It comes with files and drivers for Microsoft but not Apple.
Works well for single sheet scanning.
February 17, 2015
I haven't had trouble with the scanner at all. The software is pretty easy. The only software problems that I have had are if you don't wait for the scan to finish and you try to scan another document it will pause and just sit there, or shut the app down. I use this scanner about twice a week and it performs fine for what I wanted it for (bills and important docs from mail). If you want to stack a bunch and scan automatically, you need to get a scanner that has a document feeder on it instead of this one.

Things went a little better once the disk was loaded
February 9, 2017
I take back my original post. As an owner of a different brand that only scans smaller photos this one is giving me a harder time to figure out. Things went a little better once the disk was loaded. The big test will be when I visit my mothers and start in on 60 years of history.
Almost got it right
February 2, 2017
After using this scanner for several weeks I think this product is very close to getting it right. Where it comes up short is the scanned pages are much larger than the scanned paper, most of the time. On many instances however, portions of the pages that have text are only partially in the scanned image. One must carefully check all scanned pages for errors.
Eats Batteries
January 26, 2017
serves its purpose but uses up a lot of batteries, Broke after 8 months
Pretty Good, but software only on CD, some occasional problems.
January 20, 2017
Works pretty well and is decently fast. Every once and a while it will lose the right margin of document, must think it is smaller than it is or something. The Scan Direct software that comes with it is on a CD, but I don't have a cd drive and VuPoint seems to be one of those ghost brands that does not even have a website, so there seems to be nowhere to download it. Also, every time you turn it one it defaults to Low Resolution JPEG, rather than remembering your previous setting.
Great for Documents but Poor for Pictures
November 20, 2016
I really had high hopes for this scanner as I do genealogy and need a way to quickly scan photos. While I found this to be a great scanner for any kind of document it is pretty useless as a photo scanner. Before I get into the issues I want to list some good features.PRO:1. It is a FAST little scanner. Feeding paper is quick and works well.2. Scans of paper (receipts, documents, etc) is great.3. Portability is great. Scan anywhere and transfer later.4. Nice look and feel. Does not feel cheap. Seems very well made.SERIOUS CONS:1. Photo scanning is over-saturated and there is no way to adjust the scanning settings. This is true if you use the computer to scan or scan to a memory card. The fault lies in the scanning software on the PC. You have to use their software because this scanner does not show up as a standard scanner in Windows. The software provided has no way to adjust the scan settings.2. Due to the custom PC software you cannot use a program like Photoshop to scan directly into programs.3. Scanning using the computer will not let you change the scanner settings from the defaults (that I can find). This means you can't scan at a higher that "LO" resolution.4. Scanning matte photos come out much worse than glossy photos.5. When scanning to memory card you can change the settings but they do not "stick" if you power off and back on or plug it into a computer to transfer the pictures. It always reverts to defaults.I really hate that this scanner didn't work out. It has some great potential but is marred by poor PC software and not being able to use a standard scanner interface like TWAIN. If you just want to do documents this scanner would work great for you. If you are looking to scan pictures you will be disappointed.

November 15, 2016
Works well for portable use, but as far as I can tell you can't scan while it's plugged into USB. It's annoying to have to plug and unplug when using it on your desk, but more importantly I'm pretty sure the USB port is going to wear out pretty quickly with so much plugging and unplugging.

Good for the low price
March 10, 2017
Got this for my husband to take in his semi to scan and send documents. As far as size, it's perfect. But it tends to take one end of the paper in first, which means at times it gets all cockeyed and messed up. It also doesn't scan with the greatest resolution. Maybe we are doing something wrong because I've seen video of this product by someone else with colored brochures that looked perfect. I'd say it's okay for as cheap as it is and if you don't need any professional grade scanning done.

May 10, 2016
I like it BUT it's not good to just scan pics perfectly. My laptop doesn't have a CD drive so thanks to the other comments I got the hint that I would need to download software. There are actually two programs you'll need to download. Unlike other scanners you have to have your laptop on to scan a document. It does the job efficiently but don't think I'd recommend this product.

Not easy to install on Windows XP. But works great. A real space-saver to help de-junk my home office from all the oversized PCs and accessories. I wish that there were an economical printer of the same size and ease of operation.

January 25, 2016
When I first got it the firmware kept jamming and it would need to be completely reset before it would scan again. They did do an update to the software and it seems to be working fine now. It no longer gets stuck in the loop. The other software that came with it (Paperport) is well worth it and allows you to make your own PDF's and has OCR technology as well. Very goo product for home or small business. I will say this is not a NEAT system. If you want to go completely paperless with this machine you will need to manually label and place each item you scan in to the appropriate folders or files.
Great scanner, difficult setup, lousy support
January 15, 2016
scanner rocks, visioneer sucksI found the setup very challenging and I have had a lot of experience with various visioneer scanners. There are many set up options ad finding the right combination is a matter of luck as far as I could tell. I finally was able to get lucky after hours of effort with the one touch software and get true one touch performance and the scans are outstanding quality, but instead of going to the directory of paperport that I wanted like they did with my older scanner and software, they all went to a one touch directory, What a crock. Finally, well hidden in an obscure subdirectory I found a check box for scan to current directory, which should have been the default. I guess they are trying tp drum up business for their abysmal pay per use customer support. This lite model is the same scanner as far as I can tell as the regular road warrior that costs twice as much, the difference must be in the software, but I already had what I wanted there.
Fair for a basic portable scanner.
December 29, 2015
It works for what I use it for. I frequently have to re-scan a document multiple times because it has a tendency to stop short and not get last half inch of the document. Also, it jams frequently when scanning receipts.

Does not work well. You have to scan it multiple times to get a clear image. Computer (Mac) has issues finding the memory or mount on the desktop.
Not what I had hoped for.
May 31, 2017
I must say that I am very disappointed in this scanner. I have had this type before and they were awesome, producing great scans of my photos. This one, though, seems to drag at points during the scan, so that your pics end up with motion type streaks throughout parts of the pics, making it necessary to crop off half the pics in some, and others just are not salvageable. Not sure how to correct this issue, as I have tried everything I can think of to avoid the dragging.
You Get What You Pay For
February 8, 2017
I purchased this scanner because I have tons of papers, including receipts, that I wanted to scan and shred. Unfortunately, I have a list of complaints, which are:1. Text on scanner for PDF or jpg setting is so tiny I have to use a magnifying glass to see it.2. When I finally figured out which setting was for PDF and which was for scanner, I was still disappointed because, nine times out of ten, the PDF scans showed only a sliver of the document (see attached 8 1/2 x 11 scan), or they were completely blurry and unreadable.3. When I scanned items as jpgs, while 8 1/2 x 11 documents came out fine, receipts were sometimes blurry or the borders missing.4. I thought I could scan them directly to my computer (Macbook Pro), which I cannot. I have to first scan the document, then connect the scanner via the USB cord included, and transfer the scans to my computer from the scanner's memory card which, by the way, the scanner will not operate without, something that was not clear at the time of purchase.5. The instructions were incomplete. I never figured out what the extra flap was for.All in all, I'm very disappointed with this scanner.

July 8, 2016
I love this scanner I scanned over a 1000 pictures in under an hour with it, just check your pictures and make sure it doesn't have a blur affect as it might have been scanned too quickly, that did happen sometimes, but I was scanning a lot of pictures quickly. Very easy to use, make sure you get the mini card for it,7-23-216 update I have to drop the stars on this, way too may pictures are being destroyed by showing like it's distorted, unfortunately after I used this the first time and scanned the 1000 pictures I didn't know this until after I downloaded them and had thrown the pictures out, which really makes me sick to think of how may pictures weer lost, I just scanned a 100 more and same thing happened. I have to send it back.
Don't bother
December 28, 2015
I purchased this after reading a blog about it, clearly the blog was trying to sell this but it did nothing that it was "praised for" it's light weight yes, but the quality is bad. Scanning without being able to see if the scan is straight is a HUGE downfall in this design. I returned it. Was nothing that was promised and not worth using for anything, I went back to the large scanner until I can find a smaller one like this one that actually works.

April 4, 2016
I tried to get it to work when I first got it, but couldn't. I finally got around to getting it to work last week, but it doesn't scan well. Kept missing bits of text and disconnecting. I tried a different USB cord, but, I finally used an app (TinyScanner)on my phone to scan the documents and it did a better job.
Good in theory, bad in practice.
January 25, 2016
Was excited for this product. I travel a lot for work and it was a nice thought to have a scanner I could throw in my bag for the occasional need to transmit a paper document via PDF. The set up was easy and it was packaged nicely. The problem came when I started scanning. I initially wanted to send a four page document. Suffice to say, after 45 minutes and nothing but crumpled paper, I gave up. The problem is, it cannot effectively pull one sheet at a time when stacked. It was just too much of a hassle for me. Thankful for easy returns with Amazon!

The scanner worked fine for less than 10 times in 6 months. Now all pictures I got have a black line on it. I contacted the customer service and I was told they cannot do anything on it!? They said there is nothing they can do to fix the issue!! Looks like they don't have any warranty on their products!!
Cannot scan photos without jamming. Less than stellar scan quality.
February 2, 2017
The scanner is described as a document and photo scanner. It does scan documents - black and white are fine, but color leaves a lot to be desired. But the reason I got this scanner was because it was noted I could scan photos. Some people even state, in reviews, that they have scanned 100s or 1000s of photos with great results. I could get it to scan two pictures before jamming. Pull the jammed photo out, clean using the enclosed cleaning card, and start again. Forget about two or three, I couldn't get a single 4x6 photo to scan. Disappointed with everything except Amazon's return policy. Took less than 24 hours to ship back and process my refund. If B&W documents is what you need this for, have at it. Otherwise, avoid.
Scan Direct (Not Responding)
January 17, 2017
Very poor product and I would not recommend it for several reasons.1) The settings on the scanner can only be changed when the USB is not plugged into the computer.2) The software (Scan Direct) continuously freezes up (not responding) when scanning documents or even letting it sit idle. (I have Windows 10.)3) The software does not have any of the settings that are listed on the scanner itself (JPG/PDF, DPI settings, Color/Mono, Time Set/Format)4) When the software prompts to insert paper into the slot, a lot of the time nothing happens when I scan a document (but sometimes it randomly does). When the software is working (after reinstalling), I am able to adjust the order of the scanned pages and save/import it to my hard drive. But since you cannot change any of the settings when scanning via USB, the scan quality defaults to the lowest DPI setting. All-in-all, this scanners functionality is best utilized as a portable scanner using the microSD card and uploading the card onto your computer later. Unfortunately, the scans save each scan as its own JPG/PDF file and the software is not capable of making adjustments to these scans. In fact, the software is not capable of interacting with the imported scans via the microSD card at all! So yeah, avoid this product.5) When using a 16GB
Such high hopes.
January 1, 2017
This absolutely gutted me. I purchased the scanner so that the mountain of family pictures back three generations in my family could be uploaded onto my computer and saved. It worked once, once. It then malfunctioned and ran like it was scanning pictures when nothing was being put through. I uninstalled the software, took out the batteries, started over from scratch. Nothing. Absolutely worthless. Now to look for another scanner.
Keeps running, never shuts off and never scans
December 13, 2016
Returned it because no matter what I tried or did, it kept running continuously and would actually scan. Bad sensors or something. I'm not the first one here to report this problem. Avoid this product! Big disappointment since I was hoping it would help me to rid myself of paper, however it just caused frustration and time spent to return it with no results at all.
Not so great
November 20, 2016
I travel about 80% of the time and my life is plagued with receipts. I purchased this scanner to try to cut back on the time I spend doing expense reports. It failed miserably. I scanned about 20 receipts the first time I used it. My report:1. 50% failure rate. The scans were of only part of the receipt. One receipt required about 8 attempts before it worked. I believe that the autocrop must determine where to crop based on the first part of the receipt. So, if the front edge of the receipt is not square, it crops more than it should. I'm doing this to save time so anything that adds time is unacceptable. Attached is an example. (I only altered it to blur out business name address info)2. I scan my receipts in chronological order. Because I had to rescan more than half of them, my receipts are out of order and it takes me more time to reorder them.3. I deleted the scanned images from the SD card as I copied them to my computer. The scanner names files in numerical order and starts over when files are deleted. So, because I had to rescan several times, I have different images with the exact same name. More time to rename them.4. It comes with a "white balance calibration card." Sounds important. I followed instructions exactly but I could never get it to calibrate. Seems to work produce decent images anyway. There is no mention of this card in the instructions, just on the calibration card itself.5. The LED readout is tiny. I do a lot of work in hotels that use low wattage lights to save energy. I could not read the LED in my hotel room. I took it into work. Some of the LED is blocked by the case. I ended up using a magnifying glass so, now that I know where everything is, I can tell how it is set by position instead of actually reading it.6. Your settings reset to default each time you shut the unit off. This is ridiculous. You have to reset your preferences each time.7. Minor gripe. It comes with a carrying bag. Since that isn't mentioned anywhere, I bought a case. It would be nice to have known I didn't need to spend the extra money. It actually produces a decent image. I had it set at the lowest dpi and the image was good. I realize that at 40 bucks, I shouldn't expect perfection. I just expected something that would save me some time. Instead, it took me twice as long.Believe it or not, I am not sending it back right away. I'm going to give it a second chance. That's how badly I want something to save me some time and effort I will update my review when I decide what to do with it.
