K-cup experience at a great price and from a trusted maker
September 4, 2016
I originally bought this so that I can have a ready and convenient source of coffee when I m going out of the door for school or work (now mainly for work). I didn't want to 1) worry about making an entire pot then having to clean the pot and filter while only enjoying at the most two cups of coffee; 2) something that would have coffee ready for me in under five minutes without much muss or fuss; 3) I wanted a k-cup experience without paying the big-name k-cup prices.

So this particular machine caught my attention (actually, my wife pointed it out to me when I was on the hunt), and after reading the reviews and noting the feature set it had at the price I purchased it at I purchased it. I have enjoyed this machine and have enjoyed numerous cups of coffee, tea, and more coffee. My daughter enjoys the hot chocolate and chai lattes she makes, and my wife enjoys her cappuccinos.

The capacity is enough for the low to moderate usage that the machine sees (although there has been a bit of an uptick lately courtesy of my daughter), but if you need a larger tank for more cups between water fill-ups, then you may want to look elsewhere). I have only had two episodes where the k-cup didn't drain completely, and I think that was more so because of a seating problem with one of the brands of cups that we use. This machine uses after-market reusable cups, as well. The ones I use for my self-ground coffee work very well (just have to let them drain completely since I tend to pack them).

There does seem to always be slight variance with how much water actually gets used, but not enough for me to say "fix this now!". I will warn that this can be noticeable as far as sound is concerned, but not so loud that you will be waking up the entire house.

The removable drain is great for those times when you need to make up to 20 oz and need to use a larger tumbler or travel mug.

I get what people mean about the "plastic" feel of the machine, which can easily give the impression of feeling "cheap" but I have not had any problems with opening, closing, or operating it. Indeed, I think this plastic construction works well for someone like me who would prefer to have something lightweight and easy to move around.

In closing, this is a great sub-$100 k-cup brewer, and by a well as well as longtime trusted manufacturer.
Mr. Coffee Single Serve Coffee Brewer
January 22, 2016
Before I purchased this brewer, I read the reviews on it and was really impressed. I was afraid that the coffee was going to come out tasting like plastic like our old one did that made coffee by the pot so I was pleasantly surprised to find it doesn't. I also ordered a pack of the 6 Generic Solo Coffee Pod Filters that fit it so I could use regular ground coffee in it as the pods can get very expensive. I get 5 cups of coffee per pod as I like mine not strong or real dark. I have also found that there is only a little of oil from the coffee but don't know if the is because of the kind of coffee or because of the size cups it makes.

You can make 2 different sizes. I always make the 10 oz size in the travel mugs and never have a splash problem. Sometimes I forget and use a regular size coffee cup and still have no splash. But, if you use the smaller mugs you normally use for tea, you will have some splashing as your cup isn't big enough or tall enough. Keeping these thoughts in mind, you don't have to clean up the drain/base unit.

Some have felt that being plastic it was flimsy but it's not at all. No it's not heavy duty like the Keurig units that are double and triple the cost however, it is made by Keurig.

I'm really glad I decided on this one.
BETTER THAN KEURIG.
November 19, 2015
The price is definitely better than the Keurig. I had a mini which suddenly stopped working, would not even power on, even though I did not even use it everyday. I just got this Mr Coffee in the pretty red & love it. It also works with other brands of k-cups, does not have to be Keurig. I prefer this one because you can remove the reservoir to fill & clean it. It has a 24 ounce capacity in case you want more than one cup. I wouldn't store extra water in it though because they say the average bacteria colony doubles every 20 minutes & who knows what is in our water. The drip tray removes for larger mugs. The small k-cup holder inside removes for cleaning. Manual advised to run an initial cleaning brew before the first use by running water through without a k-cup. So, I guess you can use this to just heat water for tea bags, which is supposed to be healthier than microwaving water. It tells how to descale with vinegar every 3-6 months so performance is not affected by build up of minerals inside the machine. They recommend bottled or or filtered water. I prefer Absopure filtered water or Zero water pitcher water for drinking & think they would be better for the machine. They do not recommend distilled or reverse osmosis water. I know distilled water can pick up smells or flavors easily, so I wonder if it can pick up a plastic taste. I used tap water & noticed no plastic or bad taste. Overall, very happy with purchase. Will update if I have problems with it.
Really nice, not quite Keurig
November 6, 2012
I bought this for my wife for her birthday so that she could enjoy quick, easy coffee in the morning and on weekends. It is every bit as good as a Keurig as far as brewing quality and works with the Keurig My K-Cup accessory. The only criticism I have is the official Keruig brewers that I have used heat the water as soon as you power them on and then reheat the next batch of water as soon as the current cup has finished brewing so that there is very little if any lag between one cup and the next one. This brewer heats the water when you start brewing so there is a few minute wait between pushing the button to brew a cup and actually getting the cup. This is pretty small, but we do miss the immediacy in brewing of the Keurig-branded machines.

I would also like to comment on others' notes that the reservoir for the water is smaller than similarly-sized k-cup brewers so it is very important that you remember to keep it full. I just fill my mug with water and pour that water in before starting the brewing, doesn't bother me at all.

TL;DR This is an excellent product that we are very happy with, the Keurig brewers are nicer but cost considerably more.
update
May 5, 2012
I have only had this brewer for one week. But I wanted to write how pleased I am with the brewer so far.

Obviously it is much less expensive than the Keurig brand itself, but seems to do the same job and have the same specifications as the Keurig Mini Brewer. I am planning to purchase the reusable k-cup

Pros:
Cost

Size - fits perfectly on my small apartment counter

Ease of use - Quickly brews a cup of coffee.-- (Someone mentioned putting this on before going into the shower in the morning; I would never do that because the coffee would be cold.

Clean up-- no stained carafe to deal with, no basket that needs scrubbing within the grooves to get it clean

Variety of flavors available

Cons -
temperature - I add half and half or milk to my coffee and it cools off rather quickly

Brew strength - I like my coffee weaker than most but I have solved that by brewing two cups using the same k-cup and combining them.

I checked out the more expensive Keurig brewers and this was hands down the best for the money. I would have liked some of the additional features (like being able to have larger cup sizes for iced beverages) but I can transfer the coffee to a large glass.

I would strongly recommend picking up one of the variety packs of K-cups offered by Amazon so that you can decide which flavors you really like the best; you can't really tell from the name of the flavor.

UPDATE: July 24, 2012 - Now that the newness has worn off I still love this coffee maker and wouldn't consider going back to the old brew method. I find if I use the coupons for some of my local stores I can get the k-cups at the best deals and because I don't waste as much coffee I think it is actually more economical.

So much better than I expected!
May 12, 2017
I bought it to be our "camping coffee maker"...not having a glass carafe I figured it would be easy to pack into a tub with the rest of our camping stuff. It was cheap and plastic and I didn't expect much from it other than that it would be good enough for camping (we usually stay at camp sites where power is available). But I've been pleasantly surprised! It actually makes great coffee! It's easy to clean and stays nice and warm inside the machine.
I just love it! It is really nice that it has ...
June 18, 2016
This coffee maker has so many features, I just love it! What's really nice is that it has a special setting for making 1 to 4 cups that most other 12 cup coffee makers don't even think about including but helps make this a more versatile machine. While I work from home in the software industry, I'm certainly not a caffeine junky and only drink 2 to 4 cups a day. You just can't make less than 4 cups in a normal 12 cup coffee maker and expect the coffee to be drinkable. Additionally, my husband loves the bold setting. Oh, and another cool feature is that it's programmable, so you can wake up to the smell of fresh brewed coffee in the morning. The gentle keep warm feature is just one of the other amazing features of this unit, insuring the first cup is as perfect as last!
Love it!
June 14, 2016
I am really enjoying this coffee pot. I had a single coffee maker in the Hamilton Beach, and the K one, but both quit working. I am not sure how long this will last, but for now I love how I can dispense as much coffee as I like and it has no carafe to break. I programmed it to stay hot 3 hours in case I forget to turn it off. Also later in the day if there is still coffee left, I can use the dispenser button and fill an iced filled cup with the leftover coffee for iced coffee. I never waste coffee now. So easy to use and it looks nice as well. Also BPA free.
Coffeemaker Awesomeness
June 7, 2016
Now this is a coffee maker. This was purchased for use in our home, for occasional use for us personally, as well as when we are hosting guests. So far the coffeemaker has worker perfectly and I have no complaints about it. I love it's how it looks and how easy it is to use. By far the coolest part of this coffeemaker is the push-button dispenser. It is so cool to be able to brew your joe, push a button to fill up your cup, and have the coffeemaker keep the rest of the brew warm for a set period of time. Sit down drink, drink you coffee, and read a book - half an hour later, walk over, push the button - boom, hot coffee. It's kinda like having a soda machine for coffee, and the price is really reasonable. Some other things that may help you in your consideration of this product - First, it is pretty big. I have the 12 cup version, and it stands about 15" tall. This will slide under most cupboards, but what we have run into is that the lid won't open all the way, you you have to pull the coffeemaker out completely from under the cabinets to fill it up. Finally, if you plan on serving a lot of people, this might not be the best coffeemaker for you application as you can't take the coffee around as you serve the people - all the cups have to be brought to the coffeemaker. This is something you would have to decide whether you want or not. For us, the under the counter thing was eliminated completely by the cool coffee bar that I made from an old pallet. (See photo) At any rate, I really like this coffeemaker and would highly recommend this coffeemaker for personal and home use.
I absolutely love this coffeemaker
March 30, 2016
I absolutely love this coffeemaker!! For the price it does everything I wanted and more! I was looking for a basic coffeemaker – one with not too many digital features but also one that I could set to auto-make in the mornings. This one is perfect for all my needs. I really like that there is not a coffeepot. The coffee is a perfect temp and since I am a picky coffee drinker, the fact that it doesn’t turn bitter and sour after an hour on the hot plate is an extremely wonderful feature for me! I haven’t noticed any changes in the taste of the coffee – I’ve only used the setting for 2 hour auto shut-off. It gives you the option of 1, 2, 3 or 4 hours for auto shutoff. I don’t really have anything bad to say about this coffee maker – a slight drip if you pour the water in too fast. But that is so minor it doesn’t bother me at all! I’ve had this coffeemaker for about 2 weeks now and would absolutely recommend it – especially for less than $30.
The Hamilton Beach 12-Cup Coffee Maker! What a great Deal!!!
March 14, 2016
WOW what a deal! When I received notice of The Hamilton Beach 12-Cup Coffee Maker on sale, I read the reviews and decided to purchase it. I finally used it today and was very very impressed. I used Santo Domingo ground coffee and it was exactly as I wanted. I followed all the instructions and l cleaned the machine before using it. I then proceeded to fill the carrying tank with water for 12 cups, poured it into the machine placed the empty tank on top, inserted the filter and placed seven heaping tablespoons into the filter. Closed the container, pressed the strong brew and on button. Minutes later a very full body and hot mug of coffee. What I love the most was the fact that there is no carafe! The coffee is brewed inside and stored by a warming place for up to four hours. It kept it hot! Being able to take a mug or a cup and just pour what you want is such a great idea and it works well. At the end, when we were finished all 12 cups, cleanup was simple and we set the machine on to a timer for tomorrow morning. Very pleased with this machine and you will as well.

It works, just not the best.
January 4, 2016
Worked great for 3 cups, on the fourth one it stopped working, it would take in water and saw it was heating it up, then it would never dispense the coffee. It looks like if your not paying over a hundred dollars for your coffee maker your not going to get anything that works.

update:
I managed to get it work again, it looks like the k-cup dented instead of puncturing the bottom, the system must have a over flow feature to prevent the fluid for flowing back to the internal reservoir. After rotating the k-cup and reinserting I heard the cup get punctured and then the system function correctly. I can't really blame the coffee maker, for this the k-cup are off brand so the materials are cheep.
Mr. Coffee Single Serve
September 23, 2015
I have owned this Mr. Coffee single serve coffee brewer since the fall of 2013. Before buying this specific coffee brewer I had in mind that I wanted something that would provide me with a quick cup of coffee before I was off to class in the morning. My decision was between this black coffee maker and a Keurig maker. I am pleased to say that I have had no problems with going with the Mr. Coffee route. Here are a few words on what I think of the brewer.
Advantages: The advantages to this product is that it is slightly cheaper than a name brand Keurig. It is very aesthetically pleasing. It matches all of my black appliances and that makes me happy. You don't have to worry about it not looking right with your kitchen if you have a black color scheme. Another thing that is an advantage for this Mr. Coffee single serve coffee brewer is that a regular coffee cups fit nicely underneath the spout. Whether the cup is short and fat or tall and skinny.
Disadvantages: There are a few disadvantages when considering purchasing this product. The disadvantages include that the largest amount of coffee that you can make at one time, is 16 ounces. If you are familiar with to go coffee mugs, then you are aware that the average size is 20 ounces. This being said you either are cut short on coffee for the morning as you take your coffee to go, or are forced to use a serving and a half to get the amount of coffee that you want.
Conclusion: In conclusion, I have had a lot of luck with this style and brand of single serve coffee maker. It is great for someone who doesn’t drink lots and lots of coffee in the morning, since you have to make one serving at a time. If you are someone that is happy with making a 16oz serving in the morning and good for the day, this is would be a great fit for you. For a more avid coffee drinker, then there might be a better choice of coffee maker for you and your kitchen.
Easy as pie
August 10, 2015
I received this coffee maker for Christmas 3-4 Christmas' ago from my sister. About a year after, we received notification that there was a recall so I followed the instructions to send it back, and got my replacement. Easy as pie. That was 2 years ago almost. So basically I have had this same machine for almost 4 years and not any problems. I haven't had any leaking issues, and the only thing was the recall (and thankfully that was the case because my unit definitely was beginning to have the issues stated). So when this little gem of a coffee maker decided on Friday that it had had enough, I went looking for a replacement. (I tried cleaning the heck out of it, but nothing was fixing it) None was to be had at any store I went to, so I ordered it online here at Amazon and it will arrive tomorrow! I am hoping that my new coffee maker will last me just as long!
Okay but...
May 20, 2014
I bought this for my wife for Christmas since she's been bugging for one for a while. As soon as it came out of the box, every member of the family wanted something from it. It seems to be equally good at making coffee, tea and hot chocolate. I was not that interested in the whole K-cup brewer thing until I started trying the different coffees available. Now I'm a total convert!

That said, I have two issues:

1. The water reservoir is a bit small but I knew that going in so I can't fault the manufacturer. I suggest that if you are going to use this a lot for more than two cups a day, get one with a larger water capacity or keep it close to your sink.

2. The only real complaint I have with it is that it randomly dispenses 6 ounces even with the selector switch set for 10 ounces. Sometimes it happens after someone has switched from 6 ounce to 10 ounce but most times, it is totally random. It might not seem like a big deal to some people but when you are expecting a good mug of coffee and you get half a mug (especially if you are like me and NEED coffee first thing), it's a big deal.

We live in rural Vermont and get our water from a well. So far, we haven't had any issues with hard water effecting this machine. I know some machines don't react well to hard water so that's a plus with this one (so far). This is a good, basic, simple machine that would probably work well for most people.
A fine coffee brewer indeed
March 2, 2014
Luv this Mr. Coffee brewer. Yes, it is official licensed by Keurig so all the K-cups fit nicely in place. Keep in mind this brewer is very basic. No fancy options included. It will not wake you up in the morning with an alarm tone or give you the latest weather forecast. You have 2 cup sizes to choose from. The 6oz or the 10oz size. The reservoir will hold a little over 2 full cups of water. This is more than enough for folks who have one or two cups of coffee per day. My wife and I very rarely have more than two cups per day so this machine works out perfectly. If you have a large family of multiple cup per day coffee drinkers, this machine is most certainly not for you. You can also use the official Keurig reusable coffee filter in this machine. I own one and it works just fine. No issues at all. I feel that the power cord is way too short but that is the only gripe I have for this coffee machine.
When you un-box your brewer, run the machine 2 times without a K-Cup at the 10oz setting just to get any impurities out from the unit before you actually brew your first cup of delicious coffee.
Clean-up is very easy and hassle free. After I brew my coffee and I'm sure nobody else is going to brew a cup, I run the unit without a K-Cup just to clear out any grinds and such. Remove the reservoir, rinse out & let it air dry. After you remove the reservoir, press and hold the power button to drain any remaining water that will linger in the internal tank. This helps to insure that your next cup of coffee is as fresh as possible. Also be sure to pop out the K-cup holder from the unit. It's the black plastic piece where you insert your K-cup. Fairly easy to remove. Rinse this out under running water after you're done with the coffee maker. Believe me, your brewed cup of coffee will always taste fresh if you do these simple clean-up tips. It will only take you a few extra minutes. So have a cup of coffee and enjoy.

Good for a klutz
September 22, 2017
I bought this coffee maker after my wife somehow managed to explode the carafe of our previous one and we discovered that a replacement carafe would cost just about as much as a new coffee machine from the same manufacturer. i decided that just getting a carafe-less coffee maker for a little more money up front would save us in the long run, and this machine does not disappoint. I don't even drink coffee, but she seems to like it just fine and the best part is she hasn't found a way to break it yet.The only problem is that when we first opened the lid there was a little rubber piece that fell out. We haven't managed to figure out where it came from but the machine has been working just fine without it, so hopefully it's no big deal.
Nice Product However...
January 9, 2017
It is a nice coffee maker. The instructions at first are a little hard to understand, but after reading it clearly I get what you have to do. In case anyone has any problems with setting it up, you need to fill both the water tank and the water tank underneath that with water, I do not know why, but you do. And if you put 2 cups in the lower water tank and then the higher one it'll give you two cups, a little math involved but anyway its a nice product and I'd recommend. However the coffee does come out a bit watery with the setting at BOLD I assume. I am yet to try with the BOLD setting but other than that great product.
Two design challenges keep it from five stars
October 25, 2016
Works and tmakes good coffee. You have to get used to filling a "bucket" with water, instead of a carafe, but it keeps the coffee warmer and is easy to serve. Two design challenges: 1. you serve the coffee by pressing the rim of your cup against a bar that requires a medium amount of pressure and sometimes the whole machine slides or tips backwards from the pressure. 2. The bar is up under the holding tank enough that the lighting angle in our kitchen does not get light into the serving area, so you can't really see how full the cup is while you are serving. A small light source up under the tank would be a great improvement.
Been using daily for about a month now
July 20, 2016
Hard to break any new ground with a review of a product that's been reviewed this many times but I'll give you my experience after about a month of using it. We had inherited a Bunn that after years of service finally developed a leak so we were looking for something that would have the coffee brewed when my wife gets up for her commute at 4:30 AM. The positives on this HB maker so far are these: Price point is great and didn't want to spend $200+ on another Bunn. The no carafe idea is great, so no mineral buildup or coffee stains. Programming is easy and has worked as scheduled so far. Maybe it was because the Bunn was getting old but this keeps the coffee much warmer, which we like a lot. Maybe because of that hotter brew, but it seems like we're using less coffee to get a strong cup. The only negatives are these: It's kind of messy. When you lift the lid (after it's cooled) it has a tendency to drip condensation. Same with lifting out the basket or the filling jug. I just wipe the lid down with a paper towel before I lift it all the way. Drips a little here and there from the spigot but nothing bad. As others have said it's kind of noisy when brewing but you get used to that. Lastly, I would say this is just speculation, but the build quality doesn't seem great and I have a feeling it won't last too long. But again, for the price, if it works for a few years it will be a pretty good buy. Overall 4 stars and very close to being really good and innovative. Just needs a few tweaks. I would definitely recommend though, especially for the money.
We really love it - fresh coffee every cup.
May 19, 2016
So far, so good! After being disappointed twice with my previous Mr. Coffee brand, I was very excited to try this. I love that it is not on a burner. I started drinking pour over coffee and french pressed coffee and I am very spoiled now to the fresh taste. Unfortunately, in the morning there are two of us who need our coffee and we need it on the go - no time for doing pour over coffee etc. This is a great compromise - the ease of use and convenience of a standard coffee maker - but fresh coffee one cup at a time without the environment killing K cups etc. This coffee maker looks sleek, it is very easy to use. You open the top and pull out the basket and the coffee container. You fill the container with your water (I recommend filtered water) and the container has the easy pour spout so you can fill the coffee maker without getting water everywhere. After you fill it, you pop the container back in, put the basket on top and fill that with your filter/coffee and push a button. Super easy and you can set it to keep the coffee hot and fresh for up to 4 hours. The bar you press to pour the coffee takes a few tries to get the hang of it. It's easy with a coffee mug, but travel mugs - it works better if you angle the cup out instead of trying to put it straight in. This coffee maker has a nice drip tray also for any oopsies you make along the way.So far, we are very pleased with it. If it can manage to last longer than a few months to a year I will upgrade it to a five star. The coffee out of this is phenomenal even a few hours after brewing.
Best budget maker I've ever used!
July 24, 2014
In terms of quality and performance it's about what I'd expect from a low-end coffee maker. I've had it for a few months now. It's easy to use, easy to clean and makes a decent cup of coffee. I really like the idea of dispensing coffee right into my cup.The only very minor complaint I have is the coffee needs to sit for 5 minutes or so after brewing is complete to allow it to get nice and hot. Aside from that, no complaints. On the pro side, even if the coffee is left heating for 2 or 3 hours this machine doesn't "scorch" or burn the coffee. It tastes just as fresh after sitting for several hours as it does when first brewed. That alone makes this coffee maker worthwhile and it's the only machine I've ever had that doesn't burn the coffee.Definitely recommended if you can't afford hundreds of dollars for a high-end machine.

It's a waste of money
July 1, 2016
I've had this product for about a year and it has broken in two different spots. It's a waste of money. It doesn't even work now because on of the plastic adapters broke and the k-cup holder won't close. Do yourself a favor and buy something decent.

Update: I contacted the manufacturer about the problem and they replaced it. It was really simple, I just told them the issue and they asked for a confirmation of my shipping address and they sent a new one out. Great customer service and very easily handled!
just ok
March 12, 2016
Love everything about it except the tiny reservoir. It only holds enough water for 2 cups of coffee. It's just not as handy as one that would allow me to make 5 or 6 before refilling.
small and inexpensive with an attractive design - but they're not kidding about "single" serve.
January 16, 2016
small and inexpensive with an attractive albeit not very robust design - but they're not kidding about "single" serve.

unlike many other k-cup brewers, this one heats only enough water for one brew - and then shuts down automatically. it only takes a few minutes for this unit to brew one cup - but each brew starts from the beginning. there is no reservoir of heated water available for immediate use by the next person waiting to make a cup.

the water reservoir is also very small. it holds only enough water for a few cups of coffee.

a reasonable option if you're a solitary coffee drinker. spend a little more and get a larger brewer if you intend to use it for several coffee drinkers at the same time.
Great value for your first single cup Keurig machine
December 1, 2014
Great value for your first single cup Keurig machine.

Have used the KG5 for 2 years and it still works fine except for one significant problem: the 10 oz setting no longer works and produces only a 6 oz cup. This problem started gradually after under a year of 2 cups/day use, then got progressively worse. I tried cleaning by running vinegar thru the machine as recommended by Mr. Coffee which helped for only a limited time and was difficult to do because repeated rinsing was needed before the cleaned machine would work at all. I now use only the 6oz setting and often run it twice using the same K-cup to generate a 12 oz cup that is somewhat weak, but acceptable for me.

Note that others have complained about problems using reusable K-cup holders, but I had no problems using two different brands on occasion, Ecobrew and Solofill (my only problem is that I accidentally threw away my first reusable because I was so used to discarding the used single serve pod each morning). For the past year I have switched to using alternative disposable pods from San Francisco Bay Coffee that are compatible with any machine that uses K-cups, are cheaper, taste just as good and are available from Amazon.

I would still recommend this model for those who want to try out a Keurig type coffee maker without making a large investment. I got my money's worth out of this unit and will be looking to upgrade with a better model soon; maybe another Mr. Coffee model, such as the KG6-001.
One time purchase only.
July 11, 2014
I am not completely happy with the new Keurig-style Mr. Coffee. 1) there are only 2 size cups that are rather extreme: tiny expresso size and XL and even THAT is determined by the machine not the customer. I may indicate I want a small cup, but the machine may decide to give me an XL. So I am always guessing. 2) It fills from the back so we are not able to view the water level w/o removing the cover. 3)Sometimes the coffee is hot and it takes longer than a Keurig to heat.

In defense of the machine I will say one feature I like is that it automatically shuts itself off after the cup has brewed. The Keurig does - eventually, But I like that it shuts off right away in this forgetful household,. But I would not purchase it again.

Had trouble getting coffee after the first few months
September 23, 2017
We liked this when we purchased it and for about 6 months after. Since that time it has trouble dispensing coffee below half a pot. The filter does not seem to be replaceable and gets clogged. We soak, te scrub with a toothbrush but it only lasts a few days then start acting up again. We often need to pour the last couple of cups out of the coffee reservoir instead of dispensing as intended.
I love the idea of the potless coffee maker
February 14, 2017
I love the idea of the potless coffee maker. This one looks sleek, is inexpensive and has a few nice features. It brews a decent pot of coffee. You can only keep one pot warm for up to 4 hours. It's not too cumbersome to fill/wash/set up, however there are cheap plastic parts that fall off every time I move it (which is every time I need to refill or wash the basin) Specifically the plate under the spout, and these little rubber feet on the bottom that are meant to stabilize it, but pop off EVERY time I move it a little. I have to pick up entire coffee maker to push it back by the wall when not in use.
Three Stars for redesigned inconvenience
September 14, 2016
They've changed this machine basket substantially. The coffee resevoir was redesigned with more corners, edges, raised fins, and nubs on the botom that just make cleaning a chore, where it was once smooth walled. The spout is clumsy when adding add water for brewing is clumsy, and messier. The heating element is smaller and on an and obstructive 'bridge' across the brewing resevoir. The spring push buton to open the pour valve is too stiff. The really overcomplicated the inside surface of the walls.I like the idea of no carafe, the dispenser concept, and the brewing, but it is awkward to fill, clean, and effort to avoid spilling water on the element.
Not as good as I had hoped, coffee is either too weak or too strong
July 3, 2016
I purchased this coffeemaker after my Hamilton Beach Stay or Go coffeemaker died after cleaning it with vinegar. It lasted at least 10 years so it was probably time anyway. I typically only brew coffee for myself, 2 cups every morning and never had any issues with my old coffeemaker just using 2 scoops of coffee to brew 2 cups. On this coffeemaker; however, I have been using 3 scoops of coffee for 2 cups and regardless if it is on the "Bold" or "1-4 cup" option, the coffee is too weak. I am using it with the Hamilton Beach 80675 permanent gold tone filter and have not tried it with paper filters. I then tried to brew 8 cups when I had company visiting and used the recommended 1 scoop per cup, but added a 9th scoop just in case, put it on "Bold" anticipating it would be weak and it was SOOO strong we had to add about half water or milk to make it drinkable. I then dialed down to 5 scoops for 8 cups which seems to be fine. I'm not sure if I am going to keep this coffeemaker or not yet, but I have not been that impressed with it. I have not had any issues with leaking or not having enough room for the cup when dispensing. I do like the dispensing feature; however, it is definitely more to rinse/clean daily.
Ok, but huge and high maintenance.
February 22, 2016
It's ok. Take note of the height before purchasing. It just barely fits underneath our upper cabinets in our kitchen. But you have to pull it out anyway to take out the basket and the whole top of the thing to get the water in. This thing is huge. It's huge because water goes in the bottom part of it and then the coffee is made in the top part of it, essentially doubling the amount of liquid it has to hold compared to a machine that uses a coffee pot. After brewing, there is always a mess of coffee grounds stuck to the top piece above the filter that has to be cleaned. I used to have a small cheap Mr. Coffee 4-cup coffee maker and loved it and wanted something bigger, but this thing takes a lot more effort to maintain.
I was hoping to love it as much as my last one
January 5, 2016
So far this brew station is just ok. I was hoping to love it as much as my last one, but I just don't. I got this to replace an older brew station, without the timers and such. The old one still "worked" after 10 years, but I wanted to be able to set the timer and such.First, the way you pour the water into the reservoir is a bit of a PITA. It took me several tries before I was able to do it without getting water everywhere. Following the instructions, and measuring and pouring with the carafe, is awkward and hard to pour into the right spot. I pretty much gave up and just use a measuring cup with a spout. Then, the coffee came out sour. I rewashed everything and still sour. I washed it several times before looking for help. It turns out, the water drips too fast. So, it's like washing your coffee grounds in hot water. It wasn't letting the grounds soak. To fix that, I ended up using two filters at a time, and eventually, three. So, I go through a lot more filters with this coffee maker. But, now my coffee doesn't taste like sour, brown water. What I do like about it is that, first thing in the morning, I don't have to worry about pouring my coffee before I've had coffee. There are no spills. The timer works great and was easy to set. I set it before I go to bed and wake up every morning to fresh coffee. I use 16oz Bubba mugs, and they are a little tall, but easy enough to fill with no trouble.

Not Durable!
April 19, 2016
This Mr. Coffee Single Serve Coffee Brewer was great for the firs couple of times, but then became temperamental and would only work when it wanted to. We had to upgrade after a short period of time.
I previously had and LOVED the Mr Coffee Single Brewer that preceded this model
April 15, 2016
I just got this about a week ago. I previously had and LOVED the Mr Coffee Single Brewer that preceded this model. I had it for 2 years and had no problems. This machine seems very temperamental. I can only brew 1 KCup worth of coffee each morning. If I attempt the 2nd cup the machine only makes noise like it's working & the "brewing" button lights up but nothing comes out. I am probably going to return it. I'm pretty disappointed.

Just don't do it! I got my first one of these a few years ago on Lightening deal. It broke after one month. It would only make half cups of coffee. I cleaned it called customer service and they decided it needed to be replaced. A few month later and the same thing happened and it was sputtering out half cups of coffee. Again, I called and customer service said its been an issue and they will replace. Guess what happens next. Ya, the 3rd machine stopped working after about 4 more months. I couldn't even muster up the desire to call and get a 4th machine. I got an actual real Keurig and its been going strong for a year now.
Just totally disappointing experience.
Looks Good, Poor Performance - Stay Away!

Review for: Mr. Coffee Single Serve Coffee Brewer BVMC-KG5-001

OVERALL
- Nice design
- Poor execution
- Non-existent Customer Service.

THE GOOD
1. The machine does make decent coffee from K-cups, but in my past experience all coffee makers that use K-cups make decent coffee (assuming you find a brand/flavor of coffee you like).
2. The temperature was plenty hot for me, but I don't like scalding hot coffee.
3. I liked the size and overall appearance. I have always thought there's no need to make a ginormous coffee machine that just takes up space, a la Keurig.

THE BAD
1. The removable water reservoir sits on top of the unit. The water reservoir on my machine leaked the first time I used it and then every time I put more water in it than needed for one cup of coffee. (Even with that small amount of water, the reservoir still leaked until the water level was drawn down.) So much water leaked that a drip line of white mineral deposits quickly established itself on the side of the machine, from the reservoir all the way down to the counter. I was able to determine the connection between the reservoir and the body of the coffee maker was at fault, but I could find no way to fix the connection.
2. OK, so maybe I got a lemon. Mr. Coffee wants you to contact their Customer Service via the online form on their website. I used that website form, describing the problem and providing all the information they could possibly want - and ...never heard back from them. That tells me that either the leak issue is prevalent and they don't want to deal with it - or their Customer Service Dept. is non-functional - or maybe both are true. Either way, they don't respect or value their customers.

THEN WHAT?
I was out some cash for this Mr. Coffee machine, so I couldn't bring myself to just throw it away or Freecycle the problem to someone else. So I ended up using it for quite some time, never pouring more water in the reservoir than needed for one cup of coffee - and placing a small sponge next the base to catch the inevitable leak. I've owned several Mr. Coffee machines over the years and was always happy with them. Since they don't stand by their products - Never again. As Gomer Pyle once said: Fool me once, shame on you ...

And now? After my experience with the Mr. Coffee machine and their lack of Customer Service I decided to go with Keurig. That took a lot of consideration as I've always felt the Keurig machines are too big and overpriced. After watching sales and eBay for several months I finally found a very good price on a genuine Keurig machine. I disabled the DRM restrictions and am thoroughly enjoying that machine (a K550). I just wish the machine was smaller.

Compared to the Mr. Coffee machine, I can get a noticeably stronger cup of coffee with the Keurig machine. If you're a serious coffee drinker like me, you may also be happier with a Keurig machine. And if you're a gambler, the 'Mr. Coffee Single Serve Coffee Brewer BVMC-KG5-001' just might be in your future.
Unreliable. Can only brew 1 cup a day.
March 24, 2015
I've had this coffee maker about 2 years. For about the first year, it worked ok. However, in the past year, I can only make 1 cup of coffee every 6-8 hours since, after it brews the first cup, the second is either only partially full, or it does not brew at all. The orange "Brew - Off" light just flashes at me no matter what I do. I've de-scaled it, unplugged it, un-clogged the needles, but nothing seems to work. Yesterday, I could only run it once before it completely stopped working. I had to wait 24 hours before I could get it to brew again.

Over heats and burns the coffee
October 24, 2017
I bought this on a recommendation from my daughter; she has one of these coffee brewers. I specifically asked if it burns the coffee because the coffee maker holds the coffee and gives you a easy pour dispensing on the front of the unit. I guess my daughter does not recognize the difference.I will say nice things first. 1. It brews a good cup of coffee. 2. Dispensing the coffee is easy and convenient. 3. Reasonable priceNot so nice. Brewing the coffee is a pain and the heating element burns the coffee. 1. You have to take out two baskets to pour in the water. The one where you place the coffee filter and coffee grounds, the other is where the coffee maker brews the coffee to. The bottom of the coffee maker is where you pour in the water and then re-insert the baskets. 2. Once brewed, the heat mechanism starts burning the coffee within 1/2 hour. I am real picky about the flavor of my coffee. Within a 1/2 hour the coffee is much hotter than originally brewed and begins to taste burnt. After an hour, I am ready to throw it away. After an 1 1/2 hours, it doesn't taste like the coffee that I brewed anymore. So here is my solution. I am taking the coffee grounds basket out using an OVE GLOVE so I don't get burned. And again using the OVE GLOVE, I take the brewed coffee basket out and pour the coffee into a glass thermal carafe. 3. Even for the price, this is a lot of trouble to go through. The heating element should be maintaining the temperature of the brewed coffee, not making it hotter to the point of scalding your mouth and it does not taste like the originally brewed coffee anymore.I guess this is a positive review for OVE GLOVE.
Not great
October 2, 2017
This product does look nice. However, be aware it does not come with a coffee pot. Our travel mugs are too tall so we have to fill it at a slant and I'm always over pouring. There is constantly coffee staining our countertop - either from overpouring or a leak. Hard to tell. The catch basin is small. It does not reheat coffee. My husband does not like the taste - I do - we brew 8 oz and do 6 scoops of coffee on bold. I think that does a good ratio (too watery before). Will be looking for a new brewer. Anyone want mine?
Not a good way to go
March 20, 2017
Bought it in 2014. Working well until recently when the dispenser mechanism failed. The small linkage behind the push bar that pushes on the dispenser valve split vertically, stopping all dispensing of the coffee forever. Now I have to pull out the filter and housing and pour the coffee from the holding tank: not the way it was designed. Too bad a $0.05 part ended it and there's no way to get into the machine to replace the part. I can fix just about anything, but not this.Went back to a normal coffee maker with a carafe.
Great concept, poor execution.
February 13, 2017
Burned coffee, leaks, awkward to clean; those are the main features of the coffee maker. I was really liking the concept of this machine, no pot makes it looks much cleaner, and the idea of just pressing a mug against the base to release coffee seemed like a great idea. The main problem I have to complain about is the fact the coffee can not sit for more than 10 minutes in the tank without burning. I may have a defective maker, but you can smell the coffee frying if it sits for mere minutes. When the top is opened to either empty the used grounds or clean the main tank, the condensation built up from brewing pours out the back of the machine, onto the counter. I have yet to find a way around it. Lastly, keeping this thing clean is near impossible. There are two main tanks, one for the water (pre-brew) and one where the coffee ends up after brewing. The coffee tank is removable, but awkwardly shaped, meaning it's very tippy if there is coffee in it. It also constantly drips, so I have to bring the whole unit over the sink after every pot is brewed. There are jagged edges on the inside of the tank with oddly shaped ridges, making it a hassle to get in there to actually clean.I would not recommend this unit, again the idea is great, but I think it needs a few more iterations before it is in a working state.
I don't understand the good reviews
July 26, 2016
So, I was excited after reading a lot of great reviews, so I ordered it thinking I'd like the convenience of no pot, etc...So, first, the positives. The coffee made is good. It does a great job MAKING the coffee. And I like that you can have it keep it hot for up to 4 hours. That's way longer than usual, and when I'm working and get caught up in being busy, its nice to come back 3+ hours later and its still there, ready. The negatives.- Even removing the drip tray at the front, its hard to fit a lot of the travel sized mugs under the dispenser. Have to be awkwardly tipped to fill.- Pouring water from the reservoir into the machine to fill it is SUPER annoying. There is a wide heat element in the middle that if you happen to get water on, it will shoot out the front of the machine where the dispenser is. Usually onto your shirt. You effectively have a 1.5" wide space to pour all the water in. Just bad design- Cleaning this is not fun. I don't know why, but when you lift the top lid up to get the grounds container out, two things happen: Water spills out from the connection where water goes into the lid, and coffee grounds are smeared all over the top and have to be wiped up, every time.- When you lift the used coffee grounds out, it also drips everywhere. I expect some water, but even 12 hours after its been off, there is just water in the container itself (not grounds) that have not drained.- The dispenser regularly drips after you've filled your cup.So, basically, I'm going to keep it for a while longer to at least get my money's worth, but after a couple months of use, I'm really not a fan. I'll be replacing soon.
Lost cost components mean high margins for the manufacturer of a lackluster product with outstanding marketing behind it
September 10, 2015
I really wanted to like this product and thought, at the Amazon price, it was a steal when compared to the Mr. Coffee OptimaBrew. My biggest complaint is that the coffee sits in a plastic tub with a hotplate in contact with a metal plate embedded into the plastic. While the description says the plastic is BPA-free, it's hard to believe that that much heat doesn't cause chemicals to leach into the coffee--especially if you leave it on for hours at a time. Also, the outcome, as far as temperature goes was really no different than a carafe. The less coffee in the tub, the more heat was applied to it. This had the result of making the first cup not so hot and the last cup scalding.I also agree with the condensation complaints regarding the lid. I don't see how that water will ever leave the receptacle in it's terrarium-like environment. The lid was really flimsy in the upright position, and when you removed the basket and tub to clean or air dry, the lid wasn't supported at all. A little pressure or a fallen cup and it's all over. The unit is also ginormous--about twice the size of a Keurig and the coffee was not nearly as hot as what comes out of a Keurig. The tub is purportedly insulated, but as another reviewer pointed out, there's maybe 1/16 of an inch of airspace. All in all, it's a good concept, but I just don't want my hot coffee sitting in plastic (beyond the few seconds that it exits the spigot). If you get past this, you'll probably give it high marks.

BUYER BEWARE - waste of money
December 12, 2016
I bought this item a little over a month ago and it suddenly started only making a 6 oz of cup of coffee instead of 10. Took it apart and cleaned it, including the nozzle, and it made one 10 oz cup and then went back to only making the 6 oz. When I took the K-cup out and just brewed water, it made a 10 oz cup of water with coffee grounds in it. I've gone through this process several times. Now I am stuck with a defective coffee maker. I have always used Mr. Coffee makers, even before K-Cups were invented, but will never buy another item made by that company.
Two units, each lasting under one week. But excellent customer service!
March 3, 2016
My first purchase worked very well for less than week. While it worked, I was very satisfied. A few days later, every attempt to brew would end with a full overflow tank. It would not attempt to heat or brew. Amazon did quickly replace the item. However, less than a week later... same issue. This time, it will heat and brew on the 6oz setting. The 10oz setting will not heat or brew.

Update: Mr Coffee replaced this unit with a different model.
Do not buy this one, didn't make it a year!
May 15, 2015
Absolutely do not buy this coffee maker. I have had it just under a year now and the pump has gotten so weak that it will not finish a cup of coffee. I have used purified drinking water the whole time and only factory K Cups. I have contacted the company and they told me to de-calcify it which I did, but that's not the issue, the pump is weak. I am currently going through the process of getting a warranty repair or replacement done but that's only because this happened within the 1 year warranty. Had it been 2 more months I would have been throwing out this $70 item and buying another one? That's not acceptable, even by today's low quality standards with disposable items.
Another issue is that the maker is way bigger than it needs to be. There's nothing in it that needs to be so large that it occupies so much counter space.
I am looking at some other makers right now since I know that even if this one gets replaced under warranty the new one will probably have the same issue. I do not know which one is the best one but I do know that this one is NOT the one to buy. Steer clear.
worse however it seems to malfunction very often and instead ...
October 13, 2014
I bought my machine in May, and found that there was some interval in between brewings. I could live with that, worse however it seems to malfunction very often and instead of brewing the full cup, It brews half a cup even though the full cup is selected. I tried descaling as instructed in the user manual, but it still brews the small cup. I am rather disappointed and would probably be looking for a better machine very soon. I'm just sorry I wasted my money!!

Update! After the above review, Mr. Coffee contacted me and sent me another machine. I Received it in November 2014, less than one year later having done all that was suggested in the user manual, and "babying" it along, its malfunctioning in exactly the same way as the previous one. Quite frankly, I don't want another one. I'll just write it off as a piece of crap and move on!
DON'T BUY THIS BRAND!
August 1, 2014
My family bought this item for Christmas. By March it was only brewing a third of the amount of coffee it was supposed to. I later found out that my sister was experiencing the same problem with hers. We threw it ours out since it wasn't working. When I called the company, they wouldn't send a replacement because I didn't have the numbers listed on the plug of the machine. Lesson learned. Keep track of the plug numbers! Better yet, buy a Keurig !

This was the second Mr. Coffee appliance that we have had that was total junk! (The ice tea maker being the other.) This household will never buy anything else by Mr. Coffee. They make junk and they don't stand by their customers!

I like to wait to use a product before I review ...
October 13, 2017
I have purchased Hamilton Beach coffee makers in the past and wanted to replace my current one with this. I like to wait to use a product before I review it and have waited a month. I use the maker each weekend the family drinks about 2 pots a day (saturday and sunday) I have only been able to make 3 pots with this machine. I keep getting the message "pour water" with a beeping. I have emptied the machine and refilled it but still the same. I have tried to contact the seller but no response. I have gone old school and gotten a stove top percolator. When you need coffee you NEED coffee not a device that talks back.
I love the convenience but do not think I will risk ...
April 14, 2017
After only 6 months the coffee started leaking from the coffee carafe back down to the water chamber. It had a 1 year warranty. After speaking with the company they are replacing the carafe part, charging us for the shipping, and not giving us a delivery date. Company rep said "at least 14 days". Not feeling very kindly toward them. Our original brew station lasted years before the valve for dispensing failed. I love the convenience but do not think I will risk buying this product again.
Never Would Have Bought It If I Had Known...
January 11, 2017
We really loved this coffee pot for the first 2 or 3 months that it worked properly, and then like so many other reviewers have commented, it started leaking from the presser bar. Sometimes it leaks a little and sometimes it pours. While it does come with a 12 month warranty, we found out that we need to pay to return the cord and then pay nearly $12 in shipping to receive the replacement pot. Since this happens to enough coffee makers that I consider it a design flaw, will the replacement end up with the same problem? Will we be sending in a cord every 2-3 months? They do offer another option, to send us a refurbished pot without shipping fees, but either way we will be out of a coffee maker for the time it takes to send in the cord and receive the replacement. Not sure how we are going to deal with this but if I had known this from the beginning I would NEVER have bought it.
This is a great coffee machine
October 23, 2016
This is a great coffee machine, no scorched taste anymore from having a traditional carafe on the hot plate. The only awkward part is pouring the water from the provided coffee tank into the reservoir. No complaints otherwise.REVISED 7/18/2017:Well it died after only 8 months of use. Started leaking, then coffee would drain from reservoir to the water tank almost immediately. Back to a cheapo Mr. Coffee for $20 until I find a suitable replacement.
Retracting my previous 4-star review
August 24, 2016
Shortly after I bought this coffeemaker in August, I posted a 4-star review because I was very pleased with it. Not anymore. After just four months, the reservoir that holds the brewed coffee is leaking back into the water reservoir. There is no way to tell where it's leaking from and because it's going back into the water reservoir, the reservoir is never empty and continues to rebrew the coffee leaking into it. FOUR MONTHS is all this lasted!!! I have to pay for postage to ship it back and postage to have a new one shipped. Who's to say it won't happen again? It's now in the garbage and a cheap Mr Coffee is now it's replacement. DO NOT BUY THIS COFFEEMAKER!!! Serious flaws that need to be worked out. If I could give it zero stars, I would.
not really that great the coffee ground holder doesn't fit the wire basket ...
April 8, 2016
It's okay, not really that great. the coffee ground holder doesn't fit the wire basket filter we had to buy. There are over 3000 reviews on here. I have a tough time believing 3k people are raving about this item.... seeing that other coffee makers have ~ 40 reviews and this has THOUSANDS more....makes me think this is fluffed quite a bit. I feel this a 15.00 coffee maker. or 9.99 but its overproced and it DOES burn the coffee. Its not a great coffee maker(coffee tastes terrible after first cup. Also the coffee is super weak. and burns after a while in the machine because the heating element gets too hot I think. there is a terrible plastic taste though. we are replacing this. after a good while of earnest use it still isn't good.
