Rake your lawn green!

These wear out fast, but do a great job. I usually get just over ½ acre out of a pair. Easy to install and change out, and they really get rid of all the thatch from the previous year.

This is the best invention ever to go on the end of the blade to thatch your lawn in the spring instead of scalping it with a lawnmower blade. It clips all of the runners that have grown during the previous summer so the new ones can grow freely.
Zoysia needs these!
May 30, 2014
I have a zoysia grass lawn. The only way to properly prepare it is to strip the old thatch from the yard. Only then will it grow without showing the dead thatch every time you mow it afterward. Besides it grows much healthier as well. Burn through a set or two of these each year but it's worth it.

Way better than dethatching by hand
April 30, 2015
Way better than dethatching by hand!On my Craftsman mower with a height setting of 1-8 I had to set it around 3-4 and mow over the area then go back over again at 2-3.Starting the mower, luckily an electric start, I had to either lift the deck up by pushing down on the handle bar or raise the deck then lower it to get it to start since there was just enough resistance to give the engine problems.

Bought this to dethatch my lawn. Fit my 19 inch Murray mower with no problem. Just be mindful when mowing that you don't stay in one spot for too long because it will leave a circle in that spot. So when you go to turn the mower off make sure to keep moving and not just stop in one spot and turn it off.

July 13, 2015
Instructions were clear enough, though it would be nice if they specified which side of the blade goes down. It took a moment of three dimensional thinking to see how the spring fit correctly, and then ensure that it was pointed the right way.
It took all of 3 minutes to mount it up, and get to work. I have my grass very tall, and it's summer, so I didn't get to carried away with using it, I left it high, not touching the ground at all. It did pull thatch out of the brown spots, though, so we'll see how it does this fall when I trim the grass down and get ready for winter.
I have 2 mowers, the old one now has this blade on it, so I won't have to switch out at all.
Good product for good price
May 30, 2012
We purchased this as our lawn had not been dethatched in many years. It was a bit of a pain to put on, but other than than it worked like a charm. Yes we had a couple of bald spots, that would be because we did not realise how the ground rose under the grass. However it picked up a TON of grass. We did have to play with how high to put the blade, Once we fiugred it out it was fine. It is alot of work, and does not work with the bag. Even with a self propelled mower there was alot of moving of grass. We then put on our regular lawn mower blade and drover over the dethatched grass. I raked up the big piles but other than that our lawn mower picked up all of the dethatched grass. We had to empty the bag about every other turn but still much easier than all that raking.
Grass is recovering well and it is amazing how much dethatching this did.
Read several dethatching directions and play with what level to leave your mower. Do not stop between unless you kill the engine. WOrked like a charm. Not sure what the negative reviews are. Guess they did not read the directions.
Our tines did not break. We can tell they were used but no issues at all, except we will not wait 10 years again!

I will start with the results It does remove thatch, but not in areas of my lawn where the thatch was thick. In another area where there was so much crab grass that I wanted to get as close to bare dirt as I could this blade was helpful. I set my mower to the lowest possible setting and it removed a lot of my grass.I think that this is the type of product that is useful once a year to keep thatch down, but is not the product you use the first time you need to dethatch. Here is how I used it1. I mowed as I always do before I installed the blade.2. I then moved the lawn one setting lower again before I installed the blade.3. Finally I installed this blade at the same level as step 2.4. I made sure to mow the area with the blade more then once in a different direction.I used the bag attachment for all steps. It is vital you follow these steps. This blade will not move your lawn very well by itself. I tried using this blade for all the steps and it not only did not work, but left more grass clippings on my lawn then I would have had with the standard bladeOther noteI have a husqvarna push mower and this blade was very easy to install. I did not even need all of the adapters as it fit the same way the regular blade did.
Arnold Power Rake Mower Blade
May 17, 2013
The blade did exactly as advertised, I removed several bags of thatch and debris from the yard. I did have to grind the center hole on the blade slightly to fit my Craftsman mower. Other than that, very easy to use...just be patient. Start with the mower about one to two positions higher than normal, then work your way down. Helps to have a dry lawn and go slow to keep the blade spinning fast.

It worked.
September 21, 2015
It worked. My yard really needed some work. My yard looks a bit messy now because it really brought to the surface alot of dead grass. My suggestion is to cut your grass short and bag the clippings before you use this dethatching blade. You will be doing a good bit of raking of old dead thatch. It will leave bare spots on your lawn when done. Be prepared to loosen the dirt and plant grass seed.
Not an exact fit, but was very easy to correct that.

For the price, I think it's pretty good. Not fabulous, but - price, right?
Had to modify a bit for my electric mower, but no biggie, and it worked well after that.

CAUTION: You can strip your lawn to DIRT if you don't pay attention to height settings, uneven places in the yard, tree roots, etc... The "springs" that do the thatching are mostly to keep it from breaking and flying apart if you hit something like a rock - they do not flex a great deal, and it will flat shave the grass down to nothing - trust me. Ehhhh....
May 14, 2017
It didn't fit my Craftsman at all. I was able to use it on my Toro, but it was only close enough of a design that I could nervously use it. The Toro would not adjust down far enough to make a sizable contact to the layers of thatch, but it contacted the tops enough to "clean up" the yard. After two passes there was still a large amount of thatch left - enough to keep new seeding from getting to the soil. I still give it a 3 because just common sense said that it cannot work as assumed within the description, and it did stay in the ballpark to what I thought it could possibly do. If you wish to simply clean up a lawn without serious de-thatching, then I feel this blade has at least a much lighter "bite" than the steel tong blades. No questions required on this item. You have to take your chances of if it will work on your mower, then look closely at the design and realize just what it can and cannot achieve.
Not really for dethatching IMO
June 23, 2016
As a mowing/mulching blade it is pretty good, as a dethatcher it is not very good. It really just tears up the grass, however, after discovering this i used it to intentionally scalp an area where i wanted to plant new grass seed and it was really great for that purpose.

Somewhat works. You have to change the plastic ties very frequently and lower the blade to the point of scalping. And it seems to miss the low points of the yard.

READ THIS IF YOU HAVE A CRAFTSMAN MOWER w/STAR SHAPED MOUNT!!
October 29, 2015
I had the same problem as others with my 3-year old Craftsman mower! It won't fit on the Craftsman star-pattern mount, so you're forced to use the included adapters and washers to get it on. But apparently using those washers doesn't mount the blade on there perfectly leveled or balanced and it causes the blade to wobble around and the bolt will eventually snap and the blade & washers will come flying out from under the mower! The first time the bolt broke it sounded like I had run over a rock, so I lifted up the front wheels like I usually do to let rocks out and the blade went SAILING across the yard! I found the washers directly below the mower, the blade was about 10 feet away, and the bolt head was nowhere to be found. Luckily I was able to extract the broken portion of the bolt with a pair of pliers. I thought maybe the bolt broke because it was just due to be replaced, so I went to the parts store and got another bolt (grade 8 steel) and tried again. This time after about 3 passes the whole mower started wobbling and I could tell the blade was probably loose, so I immediately stopped it and looked underneath and sure enough the bolt head was literally hanging on by a thread! I pulled the head off with some pliers, removed the blade and the rest of the bolt, and went back to the drawing board.I figured I'd try it one more time, but first I wanted to see if the blade was properly balanced. I bought a sharpening/balancing kit from HD and it turns out the blade was slightly off balance to one side. I checked my original blade and it was even more out of balance, but I think since I'm able to mount the original blade to the star pattern mount it isn't as critical to have it perfectly balanced. I used a grinder to remove some material from the heavy side of the blade until I got it perfectly balanced and then I reinstalled it using the following method: THICK WASHER-BLADE (with 3/8" adapter)-THICK WASHER-LOCKING WASHER-THIN WASHER (used from previous blade)-BOLT. With this assembly, and with the blade perfectly balanced, I was able to finish the rest of my yard without any more incidents. It actually did a really good job at dethatching and scalping my summer bermuda grass in preperation for the winter overseeding with perrenial rye.So the bottom line is that if you have Craftsman mower, or any mower, with a star-pattern mount which doesn't fit the hole in the center of the blade, you MUST make sure to balance the blade before using it! You'd think they would come perfectly balanced from the factory, but apparently not. Also, you MUST use one of the included thick washers on each side of the blade to hold it steady and keep it from wobbling around. Also, make sure you tighten it just about is tight as you can. I used a breaker bar and probably overdid it, but I just wanted to make sure the blade was held tight and wouldn't be allowed to wobble and break the bolt again.

Should work great, if it fits your mower
March 28, 2017
This may work ok if it will mount to your mower. I have a Honda Masters series and the 2 mounting holes are not big enough for the bolts. I'm not sure if the Masters is different than the consumer, Harmony series.

As far as the blade and spring/dethachers, it appears it would work great as long as it's set at the right height. Based on some reviews, some are trying to cut into the soil. I have both Tiff 419 and St Augustine and I can see it working fine in either, adjusted correctly. Don't expect it to hand pick everything you don't want on the ground, but it gets a lot more dead material than you can with a plain blade.

3 stars because the quality is there and after using another blade to do what this one was supposed to, I can definitely see where this one could be more efficient, again,at the right height, and not expecting one pass perfection. Knocking 2 stars off because it is not as described as far as application. I might could have made it work if I took a chance and damaged the 2 bolts, but I change blades configurations often and don't want bunged up bolts.
Not for star shaped Husqvarna
April 13, 2016
Didn't work with a star shaped Husqvarna, thought I could make it work and gronk down, don't do that, I then thought I screwed up my whole lawn mower since it was stuck on there. It worked for about half the yard, did its job for that half, but then didn't move with the motor, the issue was the middle hole, the Husqvarna has a star shaped middle. Happy that it only cost me a little to try it, had that scare about ruining the lawn mower though.

Product is Ok, works as suppose. I managed to fit it to 18" 6.5 amp black&decker electric mower (using file to shave some material in the hole and installing it over and across of the main blade). Started to use it, and it worked file for about half of the lawn. Then I noticed that the rotation is slowing, and in a minute smoke came out of motor. So, be aware that using this blade on electric mower can blow the motor, resulting in over $100 in repair (I actually will by new mower instead).

Works Okay on Cub Cadet SRC 621
April 20, 2014
I got this product because I rent a house and didn't want to spend the money on a power dethatcher. The yard isn't technically my responsibility but my landlord only mows about 4 times a year here in central Illinois which basically leaves hay on the ground that never really digests. I had purchased a Cub Cadet walk-behind mower to mulch and bag leaves (not his responsibility at all) so I thought I would give this a shot as a compromise. I got mixed results.

Installation and use: Very easy to install on my Cub Cadet SRC 621 walk-behind mower. Did not have to use any of the adapter washers. For this to work best, you have to walk very, very, VERY slowly. Its more like slowly inching your way across the yard. However long it takes to mow your yard, with this blade it should take 4x to 8x longer to dethatch well. Because it only has two tines, if you go too fast, it will miss spots. Mower was very slightly harder to push.

I'll start by saying that my yard isn't very flat so I didn't expect tremendous results to begin with. There is a problem with this design and it is that the tines aren't angled down far enough. I had to set the mower so low that it took my green grass almost down to the bare dirt. It didn't rip it out, it just cut it so low that I'm afraid it might die now. If the tines were angled down more that wouldn't have happened. Maybe another company makes some differently design tines that are angled lower (further from the blade)?

After I used this, I put my regular blade back on to collect all the trimmings which revealed that I had about 2/3rds thatch and 1/3 green grass. I also used this to try to remove some ground moss in a couple of spots on my yard and again, it worked okay for that as well. Maybe removing between 1/2 and 2/3 of the ground moss.

Conclusion: While this did remove a good deal of thatch (probably 60-70% from my uneven lawn), it was so detrimental to the actual green grass that I probably won't use it again. Although if I just mow/mulch the lawn regularly, I hope to never have to use this again. If I do decide to dethatch this rented yard any more, I will most likely buy the power rake with the plastic tines because it looks like they stick down further from the blade (has anyone used both that can confirm or deny that?). The plastic tines might also be able to dig into the lower spots of my uneven yard and pull out more thatch while not harming the greenery as much. If I do buy and use that blade, I will update this review when posting my review for that one. Also, I will now only dethatch at a time when the grass isn't "in bloom" yet to further reduce the risk of killing viable grass.
AHHH - The joys of Power Raking my lawn!
June 3, 2010
In the past, I have hand raked my lawn, with regular lawn rakes and with a specially designed "de-thatching rake," with a lot of hard work for the desired results. And then what to do with all of that thatch stuff? Then I hired someone to do it for me, with mixed results for the money. Then I had my lawn service power rake my lawn (good job, for a lot of $$$$$). Finally I decided to try one of these Power Rake blades for my lawn mower. After reading one of the previous reviews, I combined this blade with the mulching blade on my mower, mounted at 90 degrees apart. The result was a fairly well thatched lawn with the thatch and clippings chopped up so fine that it was hardly noticeable, all with little more effort than just mowing the lawn. All in all, I would recommend the use of this product for a less than professional but still acceptable result for the money and effort.

Not great on newer Honda Mowers
April 18, 2017
I'm giving 2 stars because I am able to use it as a back up. This product stated it was for dethatching, I made to passes over my yard and it barely did anything. Second complaint I had is that the "universally" feature of this blade doesn't work well with Honda mowers, that may have contributed to why I didn't have great results with blade.

Not that great
October 31, 2015
Blade cleaned a lot of dead stuff out of the grass, but it left a LOT of the thatch there. I should have got the kind with metal tines. I started at a high setting and worked my way down.
Didn't work for me.
October 13, 2015
I really really wanted this product to dethatch my lawn like the product description said it would. However, it ended up being a pretty good mulching blade, but ineffective at dethatching. I used it on a Troy Bilt TB 230 push mower. I tried it at various deck height settings. At deck height number four, I could not tell that a detaching blade was on the mower. At deck height three, it cut my grass very low. But very little of the thatch was lifted up out of the grass. At deck height two, the dethatching line on the blade scalped my lawn completely leaving nothing but dirt. I suggest using a traditional dethatching tool or attachment that has thin metal fingers to do the dethatching work. I cannot recommend this product for dethatching.
ugh
May 15, 2014
Makes the lawnmower vibrate & shake, poor quality cut, and short de-thatching forks. the "tines" break at high settings, and instructions suggest to use for scalping. wish I could use for scalping, that is the reason for purchase but have to keep the lawnmower on some of the highest settings to keep the tines from breaking. tines end up being more expensive than the blade after just a couple of uses.

I could not get this to fit my Greenworks electric mower. In fact, the instructions recommend that you don't use it with any electric mower, although it then concedes that you can go ahead and try if you want. I don't know what the downside is to running it on an electric.

June 28, 2017
As many have mentioned, I had to enlarge the slots in this blade to fit my mower. More importantly the times weren't long enough to reach the thatch layer. I washered the blade down and lowered the mower to its lowest setting and still all it would do was chop the tops from the existing grass, never got to the thatch. This is just $12 worth of landfill for me...

"Don't waste your time
April 13, 2017
This was an old review from 2014 but it rang true for me:

"Don't waste your time. All it did was strip all the grass down to the dirt. Started at the highest setting and worked the level down until it just made contact with the grass, the next setting shredded the grass, but didn't touch the thatch. The next setting ripped the grass and the thatch from the ground."

It did a better job of cutting my grass off than bringing the thatch up.

Here's a few reasons as to why it was unsuccessful and did damage:

1. At a high setting it didn't shred my grass, it also didn't touch the thatch
2. My grass wasn't wet, but it wasn't bone dry. I think bone dry might be best.
3. We just purchased the house and the lawn is complete garbage to start with.. thin grass, lots of creeping Charlie, & moss... it's not thick grass. I think if it were thick and healthy we might've had luck.
4. I hand rakes my small front and took up 6 garbage bags of thatch. I know the thatch in the lawn is super thick and compressed... it hasn't been dethatched in probably 20+ years.... because it's compressed and thick this tool didn't work.

If you're feeling out of luck get a manual dethatching rake. Picked mine up at the thrift store for a couple bucks.

After dethatching, aerating, and overseeding I'm going to give it a year to grow. I'll try this tool out next year and see if they're any changes... it did fit my 21" Murray mower just fine.

A lot of reviews are super positive... making it hard to believe my experience was so horrendous!
Dethatch blade

Doesn't work on my mowers, the spring doesn't touch the ground, even at the lowest possible settings.
Didn't dethatch, damaged lawn
May 26, 2012
I was hoping this would work but it didn't. I set the deck high to start and tried it. I lowered it and tried again until it touched the grass. It pulled up more live grass than thatch. It actually didn't pull up very much thatch. It ended up shredding the existing blades, leaving ragged, damaged ends. Luckily I only did a small area but I'm worry that it may have damaged it.

It also says it is recommended for gas mowers. I have an electric mower. It says you can use it as long as you keep a constant speed, which I did.

Never a fun job but it is worth it.

Haven't used it yet but it is made like the old one so i expect it will do the job.

Product didn't fit the thatcher blade that I also purchased.
Wear out quickly

Mine broke or wore out on the first outing. They didn't last for a 1/4 acre of lawn.
Check the blade

I bought these as a "Bought together item" for a rake/mulching blade. They will not fit the blade. If you buy these be aware that the blade must be drilled and you must buy the mounting hardware separately, The product does not include mounting hardware.

These springs, compiled for bundle purchase, do not fit the Arnold 21" mower blade they were bundled with.

the springs are not made very sturdy...they wear down very fast. I used to purchase these for years and one pair would last all spring. I guess when we send everything to China to be made...this is what we get....poor quality!!

Very disappointed. I will be renting a normal power rake ...
April 7, 2017
The tines are way to short to mow at a healthy height. In order to collect anything I had to cut my grass much shorter than I wanted. With minimal thatch collected. Very disappointed. I will be renting a normal power rake to do the job the right way from here on out.
Did not pull up any thatch in my yard even ...
September 11, 2016
Did not pull up any thatch in my yard even with mower at lowest setting. Back to doing it by hand.
Didn't work at all for me. Scalped my lawn.
August 16, 2016
Installed as instructed and at first I tried my mower raised to the highest setting. Nothing happened to the grass. Next I lowered it one setting and it scalped my lawn and did absolutely nothing to the thatch below. Don't waste your time.
Not effective
July 1, 2016
Only buy this if you regularly cut your lawn 1/2" high. I kept lowering the deck and it never got any thatch. All it did was scalp my lawn. I had to modify it to fit my lawn mower so I just threw it in the recycling bin.
I have a nice line that is now terrible in my lawn
June 13, 2016
If you want to tear up your lawn, then his will work. The lines are too short so the deck has to be very low to dethatch so it cuts the grass about 1" or so long. I have a nice line that is now terrible in my lawn.
NOT Universal; Doesnt work with 3 yr old Husqvarna.
May 6, 2016
My Husqvarna self-propelled 21 inch mower cannot use this dethatcher. My Husqy uses a 5 point star shaped connector hub; this dethatcher can't be adapted to this attachment.

Horrible

You have to put it together yourself and the instructions suck and it's impossible and mine broke just trying to install it. What a waste of money.
Parts missing and bad directions
June 6, 2017
This product gets one star. WhenI opened the package, all parts were there except the two bolts needed to attach the springs to the blade. And the directions aren't directions at all, they are terrible. NOT universal!
DO NOT PURCHASE FROM ISE FOREST GARDEN
May 12, 2017
This is supposed to be a UNIVERSAL blade,, The spindle hole is WAY to small to even fit a Toro 22" walk behind mower. Missing parts, Doesn't FIT, Crap customer service. This is a purchasing NIGHTMARE.
Does not work on my Snapper mower
April 12, 2015
A real piece of junk. They give you a hand full of adapters, not one worked on my Snapper mower. If your mower has a couple of dimples to help hold the blade in place, do not get this. It just spins and wears down the dimples. Would not recommend this to anyone I wanted to keep as a friend.
Doesn't work as stated.
June 20, 2014
Don't waste your time. All it did was strip all the grass down to the dirt. Started at the highest setting and worked the level down until it just made contact with the grass, the next setting shredded the grass, but didn't touch the thatch. The next setting ripped the grass and the thatch from the ground.

Grass Beater

Beat the heck out of the grass and little else.
Beware one-size-fits-all... this attachment damaged my mower!
June 19, 2016
You'd think by the time I reached my 50s, I'd know better than to buy "once size fits most" products, but this seemed like an affordable alternative to the hassle of renting a thatcher. For all I know, it works great - but on my Craftsman electric mower (listed as one of the "compatible" models) the center hole on the thatcher blade didn't seat snugly on the drive shaft on the mower. Thinking it was just the nature of the design, I tightened the lug screw and started it up. Six feet into my thatching there was a huge bang and the thatcher blade shot out in front of the mower! Yikes! It took me awhile to find the mower lug and washers in my lawn, as this device had simply spun them off. In the process, it also stripped the threads on the drive shaft, so I spent an hour semi-rethreading it. Unfortunately, it is permanently damaged, allowing the blade to slip a bit every time I start it up. Ugh! Lesson learned... again! Amazon kindly took this product back, but my mower will never be the same.
Crap
June 3, 2014
First it didn't fit my mower so I had to slot the mounting holes, that done I tried it on the highest setting for my mower since I read about how it can tear up your lawn. Didn't touch the grass until lowered to the lowest setting then it tore the crap out of it. I would have tried to return had I not modified the holes. Not worth it maybe the plastic tips ones are better.
