Perfect garden tool.
August 20, 2017
This is a great garden tool. Sturdy and well designed.I find it is perfect to get rid of dallisgrass; carefully spray the crown of a dallisgrass mat with Roundup, wait a week or so for the roots to die out then use the Prohoe to easily scoop the dallisgrass mat out in one easy sweep. The construction of the hoe is sturdy and will stand up to a lot of heavy use.To me the weight is perfect, heavy enough to assist with a smooth hoeing motion but not cumbersome. (Let the weight of the tool do the work, a lightweight garden tool requires extra body effort and is actually more tiresome than a moderately weighted tool). This is a serious tool, the blade is sharp but certainly not dangerously so for an adult.I am totally satisfied.
This is a terrific tool. Far

This is a terrific tool. Far, far better than all those pieces of crap imported from foreign countries. A tool heavy enough to do work. A handle long enough to not cause your back to ache.

Actually purchased for hubby who drove all over trying to find a hoe like this without success. He is an avid gardener and landscaper. He loves the hoe.
Great gardening essential
June 30, 2016
Great gardening tool. I grew up hoping tobacco fields and know the value of a good tool. With weed seedlings you could get by with a lighter blade but those have a short window to chop. This hoe has enough heft to easily chop down tough weeds in a garden such as pigweed, ironweed, cockleburr and grasses that have tough stems. Also the width of the blade saves time and helps pulling soil around plants. I also like the fact it it made from recycled disc blades with a solid weld to the shaft. Handle is lacquered and kind of slick. A touch of sanding and addition of linseed oil would help. This is a hard working tool that is not the lightest yet very useful

Solid, heavy duty. Took out a 4x20' patch of weeds in 30 minutes. Best money I've spent this year on my garden!
From a professional gardener and landscaper: Get this hoe.
February 24, 2016
This... THIS... is what you need for weeding. Understand, it's not the only tool that you will need, because it's impossible to get the best results with only one. But this HAS to be part of your arsenal. Here's how I know. In our family landscaping and gardening business, we get a LOT of requests for weeding. If you try to do it all by hand, you will lose your mind, and it won't take long. So here's how to weed like a pro. :) Let's say you're working in a bed with some low shrubbery, ground cover, and not much else. Weeds everywhere.1.) If it hasn't rained in the last couple of days, you must water the ground the night before. Really not kidding about this.2.) If there are leaves and debris, blow them out, preferably with a backpack blower-- then you'll be able to see what you have left. Bring a large bucket around with you with a garbage bag in it. Throw weeds in that.3.) Take out larger, clearly defined weeds with long taproots (like dandelions) with a standing weeder. Fiskars is good. With practice, you can remove an awful lot of weeds this way before doing anything else. But there's no way you'll get them all!4.) This is where the hoe comes in. Methodically hoe the rest of the weeds out with long, slow strokes (not chopping up and down.) The edge really needs to be at least reasonably sharp. Get it sharpened regularly or do it yourself (although to tell the truth, this never seems to work quite as well.) If this is too difficult, you probably didn't water the ground the night before! ;)5.) There are ALWAYS some weeds left, so use a farmer's knife/hori hori tool to get those out.6.) If it's been raining for days on end, things will be a mess, but sometimes it's going to be six months until it stops raining and that's just how you have to do it. You will really feel the benefits of this method in that case.6.) Some free advice...while weeding, DO NOT bend at the waist, and NEVER EVER straighten up at the waist from a bent-over position. Set your feet first and make sure your lower back is arched. Then straighten your legs. The best way to get the last few weeds out, quite honestly, is not on your hands and knees, and not sitting down. It's a squatting position. Yep. You read that right! And yes, you can do it!! I had ten knee operations before I was 20 years old, and that's how I do it.Over time, you will kill your back, shoulders, arms, and hands weeding any other way. Believe me, you will. I have had MANY years of physical therapy, and I'm passing the knowledge on to you. :) So get this hoe!

Just the right weight, cuts into the soil well for hoeing out thick-rooted clumping grasses
A tool that works in a big way
September 8, 2016
I used to have one of these made seventy years ago and it broke. This is its replacement. I was worried it might not be made as well as the old world version. No fear, it is. It is a perfect angle to do some serious sod busting, ditch digging, or soil scraping. Better than the silly hoes sold in big box store. If you have never used a hoe like this and you buy this one, you will be writing a similar review.
Great grub hoe, use it properly and you will love it.
May 25, 2016
If used properly this is a great tool. From other reviews, I got the impression that people thought is to be used like a mattock. It is not. It is more of a finesse tool for clearing weeds, sod, and making the occasional ditch in workable ground. I just used it to clear matted weeds from a neglected garden and it worked great. It is not a tool to force like a mattock, instead I use a light grip with a quick swing angled to get under the sod or weeds and peal it up. No need to sharpen as some have suggested. The quality off the blade and handle are as good as any in this price range.

I have many niche tools and know how to use them. A grub hoe has a niche and works great for what it is made for. If you are breaking hard packed, rocky, or ground with a lot of roots use a mattock. If you need to clear last years matted weeds in a small to medium size garden, this is your best choice. I already have a gardener friend that will probably by one soon
Get this hoe, and never get another.

I've used this hoe for a few weeks now, and I've put it through the paces. This thing is hands down better than anything my local home depot carries. It's strong, long and awesome. I'm using it to build a trail up a mountain side so it's taking its fair share of a beating and still going strong. I have previously bought a wooden handle hoe and it broke the first day so the fact that this is going strong after weeks of use is an A+ in my book.
A dependable heavy-duty hoe
April 15, 2014
This hoe is a bit heavy, but looks like it will stand up to heavy-duty use. I needed a tool to break up some root-heavy soil where even a rototiller would not have worked. The handle is true and feels solid. The head looks to be drop-forged and is heavy enough to tolerate abuse and be re-sharpened when needed. It does take some man-muscles to work--it's almost like swinging a mallet. I'm not sure how solid the bond between the head is; I haven't had any problems, but I firmed it up with a masonry screw before I started using it.

Heavy, but works well and is sharp. I hope it holds up...already has a ding or two in the blade, but otherwise works well.

With some prep, can handle clay and hard packed dirt
June 21, 2016
Purchased the 2 1/2 lb head with 54" handle

Pros:
Easily leveled an 8' by 6' area with this bad boy. Long enough for me at 6' tall. Delivered as one piece.

Cons:
THE INFERNAL STICKER. Had to sand off an obtrusive sticker that sits where my hands go. Would have been awful to work with that still on there. Also came extra dull. Had to sand the entire handle until smooth, and use an angle grinder to sharpen the blade. Not as heavy as I'd like so it takes a little more effort in hard ground.

Finally have the hoe that I've wanted. cleared about an eighth of an acre of weeds and blackberry vines in a couple of hours. It was pretty sharp when it arrived and I finished the sharpening with a file. Banged some stones a few times when using it with no noticeable damage to the hoe.

The ergonomics on this hoe aren't quite right for me. Otherwise, it does the job fairly well.
Looks as if it might make its 5 year warranty with moderate use
March 20, 2012
This hoe does have a good handle though I am unsure as to how long under heavy use the "tool" portion will remain attached to the handle. It is attached with a thick, fairly heavy rivet and seems solid enough. Used it for a couple of hours of light work with no ill effects. The tool comes with a 5 year warranty so keep that reciept or be prepared to go searching back through your purchase archives at Amazon..you may or may not need it. One thing is certain, the price is right. Really inexpensive and I would almost have to say it is definitely worth the current price of right at $20. I would recommend it for now just for the price and who knows, it may turn out to be a true keeper. And yes, despite the misleading (somewhat) description, it does come with an excellent fiberglas handle.

Handle says medium duty I will need to disagree . I'm 65 years old and the head is lose after 15 minutes in sandy loam with miracle grow and compost added I would say light or even a childs . I'm not much into giving bad ratings but this needs one .. Rodney
Badly made

Was using it today the blade shattered into three pieces!
The hoe looks like a real workhorse if I can ever get the glue off of the handle from the label which was smack in the center
November 20, 2015
The hoe looks like a real workhorse if I can ever get the glue off of the handle from the label which was smack in the center of the handle. Why do companies that boast high quality products insist on doing moronic things like this? I got the paper off by soaking it in hot water, which I thought would soften the tacky glue. The paper came right off but the glue, not so much. I used a scotchbright pad with acetone to no avail. Now I have a 10 inch long dark patch of glue around the handle that is so sticky that I can literally grip the hoe, remove my grasp and it sticks to my hand. Lovely!! I'll try some WD-40 next but I'm seriously considering just returning the thing. Not because the hoe isn't up to the job but because I think it's ridiculous that I should invest a half hour into removing the cheap label and the world class glue.
Will not buy again

... purchased as a replacement tool for one of our favorite gardening items
September 2, 2014
This product was purchased as a replacement tool for one of our favorite gardening items. Being unable to find one locally, I thought of Amazon. It arrived timely, but when my husband went to pick it up to unwrap the head, he got a nasty splinter from the wooden handle. We had to sandpaper it smooth. Not a good quality choice I guess.

Hoeless In Houston
March 25, 2015
Alright I would love to review this actual product but someone at the warehouse is screwing with me. I got this and it was just the handle no head. Just a stick. What am I going to do with this extra long stick? I returned it for a replacement and ALL I GOT WAS ANOTHER STICK. I give up. I'm going hoeless. Doesn't look that cool anyways...
Not durable! Broke within two hours.
May 6, 2014
Was not durable! Broke within two hours. Definitely intended for very light duty use. I would not buy another one. I don’t know what the wood handle was made of. It was very weak. Not tough like a oak handle. My next hoe will have a oak handle.
Not garden ready
April 18, 2014
No edge on hoe. The first one was returned since it would not dig in the ground. The second one I gave up on and took out the grinder and file. Should be advertised as a 'build it yourself hoe'. This does not mean there was a poor edge, it means the edge was completly non-existence. Other than that, it was fine.
The only thing that could be wrong is wrong!
April 16, 2014
Handle is too small for the eye of the blade. Handle slips right through the eye with little resistance. This is supposed to be a tight friction fit with a screw just to retain it. No such luck. Be aware!!!
Bought several and all are the same.
The worst hoe
May 23, 2012
Was not tough! The handle already broke off the hoe. The hoe head was flimsy!
Would not buy another one. This is the second one and both broke.
