Five Star Reviews: | 71% Worth buying. October 23, 2017 My order arrived a day early. The packaging was very good and the actual box and tools is attractive and well done. Each tool fits into a molded compartment and the steel is covered by a pliable clear plastic cap. Upon testing each tool they are well polished and extremely sharp. The price was good and I may purchase another set. I love the power grip tools September 18, 2017 I love the power grip tools, this is my 3rd set. I carve very hard wood. And they work great but very nice tools for the price August 28, 2017 Not the highest quality, but very nice tools for the price, perfect for luthierie which is why I bought them. ... finished my first linocut with these and they are fantastic. Sharp June 17, 2017 I finished my first linocut with these and they are fantastic. Sharp, sturdy and great to handle. There are a good variety of tool sizes and shapes in this set. I did buy another set of tool for micro cuts to give me more variety, but these are a true favorite. I am going to Japan next year and hopefully hit a few wood tool shops. These are good quality for the price. these feel overall better than ramelson sets November 27, 2016 these feel overall better than ramelson sets. better leverage handle than the palm style handles. better quality overall and better sharpness straight out of the box. not to mention these are cheaper. | 65% Awesome book September 16, 2017 Came before expected. Amazing book, well written, awesome for beginner. Five Stars December 28, 2016 Outstanding product quality for the money. Exactly what we wanted. So far exceeded our expectations. Gift for son-in-law December 27, 2016 This was recommended by someone that whittles and I am happy with it. It was a gift for my son-in-law. He loves it. Great quality My favorite of mt woodworking/whittling magazines. I use this one more than all of the others combined. December 4, 2016 One of my absolute go-to books on a regular basis. From small detail cuts to projects, this book is great for beginners and up. | 63% Works Great! July 15, 2017 Works great, except for the fact the polishing compound arrived melted to the SlipStrop leaving it a very weird shape. It seems to do a fine job on my wood and linoleum cutters. Awesome! January 28, 2017 Product was exactly as advertised. Price was reasonable. Order process was simple. Shipping was so fast. A refreshing, stress-free experience. I would recommend Amazon to anyone as reliable and trustworthy, to buy from. Also, I really am impressed with the Flexcut knives, gauges and sharpening tools. Sharpening Strop for Small Tools: March 14, 2016 Flexcut SLIPSTROPThis product does what it's designed for, the compound they put with it works great.Easy to use light stokes work best. Produces that wicked sharp edge we need for wood working.Sincerely,Joseph Keeps my teenager happy after years of use. September 15, 2015 I totally didn't understand this thing, but my son's a woodcarver and he knew what he wanted. So we got it for him as a gift - he only uses Flexcut. Years later and he's STILL using this. Works great according to him. I'm just glad he's happy. Knives Best Friend May 8, 2013 My husband bought this to sharpen his Carvin Jack pocket tool and he thinks it is the best. It puts a razor sharp edge on the edges so he is very pleased. simple, functional May 11, 2012 Although they must make quite a tidy profit on this, it is worth it in the end. Great design. It is essentially nothing but a small piece of wood (cut to match standard woodcarving tool surfaces) and two little pieces of leather packaged with a small amount of solid rubbing compound. It serves the purpose it needs to serve as well as anything could and for its simple design, I give it five stars. | 0% There are no reviews yet |
Four Star Reviews: | 15% Inexpensive but good October 27, 2017 If you are looking for a good inexpensive set of tools for printmaking, these are great. Well rounded hands. Easily controllable. Have not found a down side. Love that they come in a case Nice set. April 5, 2017 These are super sharp and well put together. I'm not sure how long they are supposed to stay sharp. Found little divots in the blade not sure if it was my fault or not. I'm new at this so it could've been my hacking away. but they seem to work great. They are well made and I consider them ... March 22, 2017 These are my first carving tools so I don't have anything to compare them to, but they seem to work great. They are well made and I consider them a good deal for the price I paid. For someone who is just getting into printmaking, they are ideal. Great for the Money! November 29, 2016 Several very useful tools in this set! Good edges on most. Used a couple on basswood and found them to work well. Great for the money! | 25% Great beginning projects by a number of different contributors so ... February 21, 2017 Great beginning projects by a number of different contributors so that you can see a few different styles of carving. I wish there was some more information on how to make some of the cuts for some of the more complex projects, but it just may take some practice. For the price, this is excellent. I really like this book January 31, 2017 I really like this book, but I gotta say, the "5 minute owl" is taking me a lot longer than 5 minutes to whittle... ;-P | 23% Flexcut August 29, 2017 Fairly decent, but I am not having much success in mastering the unusual material. It seems rather odd. I had a issue with mine where the red paint ... March 1, 2017 I had a issue with mine where the red paint on the wood part rubbed off on my compound instead of the compound rubbing on the wood but once all paint was gone it wooked is fine for my fishing knives and kitchen knives September 22, 2016 Recently purchased a set of flexcut knives and gouges, and the only thing I had to sharpen them was a diamond stone. Which, is fine for my fishing knives and kitchen knives, but not for these knives and gouges.Well, I have an old 1/2in chisel I ground into a round gouge YEARS ago (12+), and decided to put it through the SlipStrop. I re-ground the grove and the outside portion, then took it to the diamond stone to get a sharp edge. After 3-5 minutes, the very rough diamond stone grinding became a highly polished finish.Ive only given a 4 star because the polish broke very easily without a lot of pressure. For super sharp edges August 21, 2016 For putting a very very fine, keen edge on your carving tools this is a very good set. I like that there are various shapes of strops to fit the most common shapes of hand wood carving tools. This will not take the place of sharpening stones. This is for that last little bit of sharpness that your blades can get. As wood workers know, a sharp blade is easier to control, requires less effort, and reduces or eliminates tear out. Easy to use and maintain knives April 3, 2016 It will not get out any burs in the metal, but it will hone the edge. The various shapes fit the palm tools and the flat works great for the knives. Very easy to use and maintain the knives. Does the job February 22, 2014 This slip strop doesn't fit any tool exactly, but works for everything. I can't imagine how many curves and fees it would need to fit all the different tools available. So, if you polish one side of the v-tools at a time and gently move the gouge leading edge from side to side while pulling it the length of the curve that fits best, your tools will become sharper from the polishing. This is basically a block of wood. If you have a tool with special polishing needs, you can make a custom honing block out of scrap wood from around the shop. This one does well for what I need so far. | 0% There are no reviews yet |
Three Star Reviews: | 5% They are ok March 5, 2017 They work, but definitely can't get a good rhythm going. Good blades ain't cheap, but it's a good starting set for widdle carving Good steel but slightly undersize handles December 7, 2016 Good quality tools with a well-thought-out sharpening system. The handles are a bit small for my large hands but they take and hold an edge well. Nice storage box. These tools are extremely nice upon arrival June 22, 2016 These tools are extremely nice upon arrival. They are so sharp they can easily handle any task and the grip is awesome and the blades are covered with rubber coating so that you can protect sharp blade from accidental damage.I used these tools to carve my "chaos eater" sword replica and it was a 1.13 m length pine wood sword with some awesome engravings but some chisels broke of tiny tips of their sharp bevel and when such thing happens you can no longer comfortably peel of the wood chips as before. Rounded bevels became dull the first, maybe because I used them a lot. Then i switched to straight ones and finalized the carving and if the blades remained as sharp as they were before I would give it a 5 star without second thoughts. So if you buy these chisels do make sure that you have some proper sharpening equipment and honing material, because I tried to sharpen them at 400 grid wet stone and although i reached some level of sharpness they were not as sharp as initially. I guess I must try sharpening stones which have 4000 and 8000 grid and diamond stones are the best what I've heard so far.Anyway, if you can handle sharpening, these babies are quite cool. And also I included a photo of the sword that I've carved with these tools. good for small projects but chipped quickly March 10, 2016 They were okay .. good for small projects but chipped quickly.. I would say good for small detail projects Three Stars February 17, 2015 Angle of the cutting bevel seems to 'steep'. But I have not used much yet. | 8% its a good book but may as well use the Internet October 13, 2016 It does have some interesting projects in here but only a few otherwise it's better just to look for the things online. It's nice having a physical copy of something though. The book itself is nice quality Three Stars September 26, 2016 other than the projects on the cover the rest are very mundane and basic. Cool Designs February 2, 2016 I ordered this book because I thought it might be fun to do with my son. It was on backorder so took over a month to get to me. The book is smaller than I thought but well printed on quality paper. It's a book that will last a long time. There are a lot of designs to try and minus a few they seem like fun, easy, starter type projects. Each design has written directions as well as the steps in pictures. I wish they would have put more pictures. Sometimes they skipped two or three steps between pictures and it would have been nice to see how they did some things. Overall, however, I'm pretty happy with it and excited to try carving a wizard on our next campout! Goof choice from current books on whittling, but I long for better from this category October 24, 2015 Had on my wish list, and wife got it from Amazon for my birthday this week. It has some interesting projects, as much as any other of the six newer books I have on the subject. But if you like whittling and want an inspiring book, try to pickup a second hand copy (here) of "Whittling and Woodcarving" by E.J. Tangerman (c) 1936, its full of many, many examples from an era when whittling was much more popular. Unfortunately, it only has instructions for a lesser number of the projects, and some of them are challenging. However, seeing the vast greater quantity of examples in that book, I long for someone to write a book with instructions for a greater range of more challenging whittling projects as seen in that book. Whittling is a step in the right direction, but I'd like to see a turbo-charged version of that book. | 9% Three Stars February 18, 2017 Not what I expected, but seems to be helpful once you learn how to use it. Three Stars February 5, 2017 Not sure yet, whether it was worth buying it...only covered with leather on one part of surface. gettin the edge January 6, 2017 works ok leather pad has some ridges making it not as smooth as it should be I bought this because of the Flexcut Name August 31, 2014 It's not all leather. The dark portion is stained wood that is cut in shapes (angle, V, rounded, etc). The leather part appears kinda cheezy so I'm concerned that I will wreck it. I haven't. I would like to watch someone use it who knows what they are doing. I own Flexcut carving hand tools and they are the best so I bought this for the tools. I'm so-so on it. | 0% There are no reviews yet |
Two Star Reviews: | 5% Nice shape, and holds well in the hand April 7, 2017 Nice shape, and holds well in the hand. The metal is too brittle to hold up to hardwood. Right away the chisels chipped when using them on cherry. I will only be able to use these for softwood. Pretty disappointing, but as always, you get what you pay for. I have found that these aren't made from the best steel. November 9, 2016 Unfortunately, I have found that these aren't made from the best steel. The other tools were fine and very sharp August 18, 2016 One of the tools was loose at the handle. The other tools were fine and very sharp. I would have given it a 4 or 5 if not for the broken one. The handles are nice and comfortable but unfortunately that doesn't make up for ... June 11, 2016 While these carving tools came sharp in the package, I quickly discovered the metal to be too soft. After one night of use, the edges were beginning to chip. Sharpening didn't take long but the edges deteriorated just as fast. The handles are nice and comfortable but unfortunately that doesn't make up for the low quality steel. I did not once use a mallet. I only used the force of my own hands. These would be excellent with some better quality steel. If you plan on using these once and never again I would recommend. If you plan on repeated use, look elsewhere. they are very poor quality. WOuld only recomend if you want to ... July 31, 2015 I sent mine back, they are very poor quality. WOuld only recomend if you want to carve balsa or soft woods. Even pine would be too hard. Cheap metal quality. | 1% Would not recommend. July 20, 2016 Instructions are unclear and intended for advanced carvers. Would not recommend. | 3% Not worth much June 17, 2016 has very limited and small curved surfaces on which to hone curved gouges. overpriced and really rather useless. Not satisfied! January 9, 2016 I read other customer's reviews and thought this would be a great choice to keep my tools sharp, but upon receiving it I found that the Flexcut Gold compound would not adhere to the strop. The compound was hard, so I scraped some of it off and made a fine powder as recommended, It still would not stick to the strop. It worked well with this method on the leather, but not on the other surfaces. I've never seen a polishing compound this hard. I don't know if the compound was old and hard or if this is the way it was made. Other users seem to have a good experience with it, but mine is unworkable. If anyone has any suggestions that I haven't tried, let me know. Not what I expected May 7, 2015 The stropping compound was so hard it was unusable. It's been over a week since I requested a refund but I haven't heard anything from the supplier. I'm reluctant to ask for a replacement; expecting it to be the same unusable product. Disappointed March 28, 2015 The slipstrop, itself, looks pretty useful. The compound does not stick to the solid shape. It does remove the coating on the slipstrop and cover the compound stick itself.Who knows how long the kit has been waiting for me to buy it and the stick has turned to stone.Flexcut comes highly recommended but this particular item is highly disappointing. | 0% There are no reviews yet |
One Star Reviews: | 4% Broke after 1 use July 26, 2017 Tool tips chipped and because extremely dull after one useWould not rec. One Star April 28, 2017 Came extremely sharp. Too sharp? They dulled after a couple minutes of use on soft wood My Experience With This Set Is To Steer Clear Of Them ! January 27, 2017 I bought this set in Nov. 2016, but didn't start using them until today, Jan. 27. Within less than a couple of minutes, the first two sweeps I used broke right where the blade enters the handle. I was using them to clean up the curves in a 1/16" deep area I had routed for a small box hinge with rounded ends. I was using them with just normal hand pressure to slice a sliver of wood up to a marked line, not pounding on them with a mallet or using them to gouge out a 1/2" chunk of wood.I knew going in that these were not going to be the quality of a Flexcut set, but I certainly didn't expect them to break the first time I tried to use them. Each one broke in nearly a perfectly straight line across the blade. The end of the broken blades looks like pot metal, not how steel usually looks when it's broken. I'll be tossing these in the trash and ordering a high quality set after I post this review. Poor Quality June 13, 2016 Not high Carbon steel. Will not hold an edge very long. Definitely not appropriate for carving hard woods. Ok for bass wood carving, that's all. Not worth it. June 6, 2016 I found them to be of poor quality. I usually don't write reviews, but this purchased prompted these words. | 1% Disappoint How To Book August 19, 2015 I am hoping that the contributing artists were were more revealing and honest with their inputs to this book and the editors just edited away all the useful information. The book in fact does give ideas to beginer whitlers but the how to is really bad. The book tells you what needs to be done but doesn't tell you how to. Very disappointing book. | 2% I wouldn't July 21, 2017 This product didn't meet my expectations. It doesn't even work for all the Flexcut tools! For example, Flexcut has 45, 60, and 90 degree V tools. However, the slip-strop only has ridges for the 45 and 60 degree. I made a better one in an hour using a piece of soft wood and some better polishing compound. The Gold compound that came with it is very hard, making it difficult to apply to the strop. I found better polishing compounds that come in brick form at ACE hardware. Also, the leather that is on this slip-strop is terrible. It's thin, smooth, and brittle. Item is useless. February 28, 2014 Does not sharpen or even smooth my carving tools. I should have returned it. I would recommend it to no one. Useless May 22, 2013 I expected sculptured, layered leather. This is just stained wood roughly shaped. Don't waist your money. The rubbing compound does not even take on the surface. Useless May 4, 2012 Too small, cheap, badly made of soft wood, useless piece of kit, save your money and use leather covered wooden dowels 1/2 round coated with polishing compound. Might just work with small carving knives but no use whatsoever for carving chisels. Don't know why this has had any positive reviews as it is plainly a cheaply produced bit of tat (English translation; Cheap badly produced rubbish goods). Obviously there is a gap in the market for someone to come up with something, anything else would be better! If this "tool" is intended only for Flexcut tools it should be mentioned in the description. It's obviously not fit for use with anything else. Won't be buying any more Flexcut products. | 0% There are no reviews yet |
