Side by Side Comparison of: Coaster Home Furnishings vs Songmics-Storage Ottoman

Bought this in 2011...almost six years later it still looks good and has always sat in front of our couch with dog and cat using it often to lay on. If I ever need another one I hope this will still be available...

After searching the internet for an ottoman to go in our family room we finally found this one. A few of the bad reviews had me worried but our Coaster home theater chairs (bought Feb 2006) are still in great shape and I assumed buying this from Amazon direct was a no risk purchase (seemed like some of those with issues bought from Amazon but fulfilled via a 3rd party). It is large enough for two people to share, the color is accurately represented and I would recommend this storage ottoman!

This was a darker color than I had expected but with the legs being the rich cherry color, which is the color of all our furniture it really looks great in our home. I love that when you open it, it holds it self up and shuts very easily, which with a one year old it's nice to know she won't get hurt when she puts her fingers in there when we go to close it. It turned out to be deep inside. Plenty of room for blankets and a few toys. The shipping was fast and it was cool that it was free shipping. Definitely would recommend this to anyone as well as I will be buying from this buyer again!

My husband and I decided it was time for a new coffee table, as our two year old liked climbing on top of our old glass top (purchased before a kid) coffee table. We decided to purchase this as it seems climb proof and I liked the idea of storage. I initially only purchased one, but then decided to purchase another so we could have something similar in size to our old table. Two are perfect. I purchased a tray to go on top for foods and drink, but the top is very nice and much easier to clean than our old coffee table. All in all this is a great deal. It isn't heirloom quality, but we just need something to last us until the kid is old enough to realize she can't climb on top of glass. I also love the soft corners to prevent running toddlers from crashing and getting injured. The product arrived fairly quickly and they were packaged well.

We have this ottoman in our family room and are ordering a second one. It is the perfect height to put your feet on when sitting on the couch or for our toddler to pull himself up on. Also, I don't need to worry about him bumping his head or chin on it since the padding on top is nice and thick. The storage section is not very deep, but it is the perfect size for dvds, video games, baby toys, etc. We have spilled just about everything on it, and it cleans up nicely with just a damp washcloth. That being said, if you are going to want to set cups or plates on the top of this, make sure that you get a tray for on top.
It arrived quickly and with minimal assembly. What more could you ask for?

I can't stop buying these ottoman/storage units. They are ABSOLUTELY worth every penny (and the fact that they don't cost TOO many pennies makes them even better!) They're beautiful, sturdy, comfortable to sit on, and have tons of storage. I love them in my living room where the kids like to do art projects and play games so I have a smaller one for their art supplies and a bigger one for their board games. I put decorative pillows on them so they look like furniture/décor. I have one in my daughter's room for all of her stuffed animals and I'm sure I'll be buying MORE for other rooms in the house. I love all the different colors so they match whatever room I put them in. I've looked at a lot of these and most are over priced and cost a LOT of money. I had only seen good reviews on these Songmics Storage Ottomans and after I bought one, I was hooked. It takes about 5 minutes to put together (that includes the time it takes to find scissors to open the box and cut the tape). :) Buy them, you won't regret it!

I ordered this ottoman to bring along to our camper. Camper couches aren't the most comfortable thing to sit on (one step up from a futon) and they aren't as high as a normal couch. We wanted to make it a little more comfortable to sit on because we spend quite a bit of time there during the summer months. This ottoman has worked out great. It is the perfect height for the cough and is just the right size so it doesn't take up too much room to walk around it. It's also wonderful to store extra blankets (games or anything else we can't find storage for in a small camper!). I love that it also doubles as extra seating. I'm not afraid to sit on it at all. My husband has sat on it without any issues. We use it for extra company as well as seating for the end of our table since there are five of us. Another wonderful thing about this ottoman is that is folds up when I don't want it in the way or when we close up the camper in the winter months. I don't have to worry about another bulky piece taking up room. I'm thinking of ordering another a few more for both of my teen's rooms so they don't have any excuses for keeping stuff up off the floor!

This is multifunctional as an ottoman and a reading box. :-)

It is 15" tall 15" back to front 29.5" long. Padded lightly with 6 buttons on top which is removable for an amazing amount of storage. It is light weight but holds a lot of weight as long as you do not plunk down or jump on it. Folds flat about. 2" thick for putting it away if needed and pops back up in under 3 minutes again.
I am getting the 15" square as well to move about this one is going to stay put. Beware if similar obes that are not as nice be sure to get this brand...Songmics.... Does have a fairly strong wood with a little glue smell but mostly wood and was gone in 24 hours unless you opened it up then smelled it a bit but not bad...if you are sensitive to smells(i am) just let it air in another room or in a porch. It is worth every penny. Great for tight spaces because the amount of space it occupies is helped by equal amount of storage inside. The satin non shiny vinyl like surface may not hold up to little ones not sure it might....I love the semi sweet chocolate color.
I can think of so many ideas different people would come up for uses.

Exactly like the pictures! Great product! I can sit on it not worry about it falling and when it comes in the mail it comes in a flat box which is confusing but once you open it, it just unfolds and bam there is your ottoman. It also is all wood inside for the frame and comes with a floor insert to keep it from falling or folding back in place. Details are perfect

I bought this thinking it would be a good alternative to a traditional coffee table, as it would work as a "footstool" or even extra seating. It's smaller than many, and upon putting it in the house, found it was a bit too small, so I purchased another one, and have them placed side by side. They look good - not super high quality, but they aren't bad. They open for storage and I have some throws stored in there for when it gets chilly. Very happy with them.

It is on the smaller side so make sure you look at dimensions. I needed it to be larger due to my couches. I can't complain about the look or quality. Very nice for a smaller room.

3/16/2015 Update
The top came loose from the screws holding the latches. Not very deep screws. I worked on it but could not repair. Yes my 3 year old was opening it too much but not abusing it. It should have withstood more than this. Oh well nothing is made of sturdiness anymore.

This piece is definitely a game changer for comfort and organization. The price is wonderful although one of the legs had trouble screwing on. Note that this ottoman is probably a bit shorter than most couches. Measure your couch/chair and compare with the specs. If you're fine without a flush level between your couch and the ottoman, do get this!

Really nice item for the money, but it is not as high as advertized. Barely 14 inches. I read other reviews that said it looked lower than expected but they didn't actually give measurements that differed from the ones stated on the description. In any event, it came undamaged and is really attractive. I'm not going to return because it wouldn't be worth the hassle and it is so attractive and otherwise well-built that I am going to see if I can make it work. I'm going to see if I can buy taller legs, or, being a highschool teacher, see if maybe our woodshop class can help me out.

Bottom line, very attractive, but not suitable to go with large-scale furniture.

This is perfect! Love the chocolate color. It has lot's of storage space so you will need to probably get organizers to palace stored items. But you can put a lot in here. My only negative is when you sit too long it molds to your rear.

Does the job but you get what you pay for. No real complaint, but just looks and feels cheap, which it is. Good enough to put your feet up or use for a coffee table.

It ok, but I thought it deserved 4, rather than just 3 stars. Keep in mind that you do get what you pay for. I know they sent measurements, but I wish it could have been a little taller for what I wanted. It arrived well and works just as explained, so I would say it's exactly as they represent, The color is cream, and the faux leather is good enough. Just be sure you totally think about the size. It will work for storage as they say. It's in our bonus room and holds throw blankets and it can hold a good amount of "stuff", so, yeah.... it's good!

EDIT: I had already reviewed this product but then I started getting emails asking me to go onto amazon and review it. I took off a star. They should have checked to see if I reviewed it before emailing me to go review it. It's annoying. Not sure if I want to buy a second one now.
This is great. It's exactly what you'd expect for the $ you pay and maybe more. I am a big guy 300+ lbs. I got this to put in the back of my Jeep Patriot instead of a ugly $20 car-caddy. I also wanted something that if I was broke down or on a trip/tailgating/camping, I could pull it out and have a nice seat for anyone needing it. It looks great, feels solid and seems to hold my weight with room to spare. I put all my car stuff in it like my fluids, cleaners, rags, etc and although I had to make sure to add some things to fill it up (loose items tend to shift around in it), I'm totally happy with it because it looks really nice in the back of my black Jeep. It adds style. I might get another for the foot of my bed in my bedroom.

Quite the nice storage ottoman, sturdy enough to get the job done, didnt feel as if it would collapse underneath me upon sitting on it. the only reason for 4 stars is that it had a very strong smell for a few days when I first opened it. I aired it out in my closet before use. I use it to store throw blankets and pillows.

When this first arrived I was worried that it wouldn't last very long because it seemed a bit thin and flimsy, but so far it seems to be holding up well for what I use it for which is just to rest my legs on. It looks and feels nice in person, and the storage is a nice added bonus.

The only reason I could not give this 5 stars is because the six buttons on the top cover can be a bit annoying. They're kind of starting to stick out and are becoming a bit bothersome. Hopefully it will not mess up anything too much when I inevitably cut them off.

It looks great and provides storage... it just didn't quite match the shade of my couch. It's also made from a thin fake leather material... so if you have animals make sure they don't jump on it or dig their paws into it. It's in my living room for now, but I can see it ending up in a less-used room in the future.

This was my first online furniture purchase and I probably wouldn't do it again.

Packaged arrived 1 day late, and the hinges on the interior are dangerous for a infant learning to walk. We replaced our coffee table for this to double as a toy box, and pad his fall. However, it looks like we should consider the hinges could catch his fingers when he opens it. The product looks great for the price and is as described. Good value!!!

Update, its been a year and this product looks like it is 10 years old. I would be surprised if I get another year out of it. I realize it was cheap but it has pretty much fallen apart with normal use. The hinges didn't last long, and we discarded them about 6 months ago. I am lower this from 4 to 3 starts. Still a decent value, but not a great product at a great price!

not bad

This ottoman arrived in good condition and is mostly what I expected.However one reason I liked it was that the legs matched our other family room furniture. I just unpacked it and was disgusted to see that the "wooden legs" are not wood at all, but hollow plastic with a black matte finish. They will very likely be fine but it definitely is a cheaper look and is NOT what is described as "ottoman with wood legs".

I love the look of the ottoman. However the screws were not long enough to keep the hinges in place. In fact a hinge broke when I tried to put the screws in. So I took all the hardware off and just will just slide the lid off if I want to store anything in it.

Not the best ottoman/storage bench; however, you get what you pay for. Cheaply made (one button fell off after two days) and extremely hard material. Arrived in a flat box. Very easy to assemble, but there's no give to the fabric. If you're walking in the dark and accidentally bump into it, it will definitely hurt. Great storage for kids; that's about it!

It's sturdy! Definitely what I was hoping for. The Faux leather is a little baggy on the sides, but it looks pretty ok in the corner where I have it!

It is okay, but not terribly sturdy. I would call it a glorified cubby with a nice top. However, little ones are tempted to set on it and it is not meant for that at all. Already the top is starting to come a part. Next time, I'll just invest in a really nice toy chest.

Great when initally bought, but apprarently does not hold the 660 lbs as advertised. The cover broke after 4 months. It was only used as a foot rest and normal sitting when we had guests over. I was very disappointed by this. the weight this could hold was my main concern when buying it, and only purchased the product because I was confident that it would be able to hold the weight of one person without any issue. However, the company promptly refunded me for the trouble I experienced with the qulaity of this product.

functional. fairly sturdy but uneven movements on it may collapse the walls (sit on it but never jump on it). looks ok but the side uphostery had wrinkles (cheaply made). strong smell inside but instructions state that it needs to air out in a couple days. serves purpose of storage unit that I can prop my legs on.

Think of this as something to look at and not touch! If you add any weight to the top of it, the cardboard lining (and I mean cardboard) will collapse and ruin the structural integrity of the stool. I purchased this item really just to put spare afghans and blankets in during the chilly months in the living room (we live in NC and my husband is from Maine so he often freezes us out of the house all winter). The ottoman should have been lined under the lid at least with particle board if not wood, but honestly I'm pretty sure this was just cardboard under the leather/vinyl material. My young nephew came over one afternoon and made the mistake of sitting on it, which I normally would have discouraged but I didn't see it in time and before I could stop him....it was too late. My ottoman was completely concave and there was nothing I could do to even make it look presentable again. I should have spent the extra money ahead of time and purchased a proper ottoman with storage space because that's what I had to do later, but live an learn.

Upset! One of the legs were cracked when I recieved the package. Also there is a tear on the bottom of the ottoman. The seam is puckered on the side. Fist time I have been disappointed from Amozon shopping!

I was pleased with the size and the appearance of the ottoman. However I was disappointed that there was a small rip in it and when I contacted the company about replacing it I never heard back from them.

Loved the style of this and shape and color. received it very prompt and quick. However. extremely disappointed the lid is placed on crooked. a stitch is loose on top and makes it look cheap, and a leg was loose and twists.

Like look but one top hinge was not installed properly causing the top to be out of alignment.
Very small screws will not hold hardware over time.
Removed all hardware and glued stops in corners of underside of top to align with opening
of base. Now lift off instead of hinge opening. Guess you get what you pay for!

Good but stinks

Cheap IKEA style quality. It's too flimsy to sit on if you're over 180 lbs otherwise it feels like you would break it.

This ottoman is attractive and sturdy. However, the buttons on the top started coming off almost immediately making it look damaged (which it is) and I haven't figured out a way to fix it.

Ottoman received on schedule. Ottoman and top has a horrible chemical smell! I have tried air refreshners, soap & water solutions, deodorizing sprays and it still smells awful. It's not just a rubber smell but a nauseating chemical. It's been set outside in the sun to air out and scent has lessened somewhat. It was purchased to be used as a footstool for mother with edema whose feet need to be elevated. Sadly nothing can be stored in it because of smell. Side construction is loose and not tight, as if not properly glued together. Should have bought the higher priced one.

I Never received my Product, do not order from them they do not deliver products. I've worked with them for several weeks to track my shipment. Shipment states label. Vendor would not support me.

Already showing wear and tear on the corners. Fabric wearing through. Past return date. Not satisfied.

Frame construction is not great , but good enough. Design and dimensions fit my needs. But...the biggest disappointment is how cheap the vinyl is; it's very fragile and tears incredibly easily! In the process of unpacking, my fingernails accidentally tore 2 holes in the vinyl! In use now for about 3 weeks, and several more holes have been torn by feet and shoes! Really? What am I supposed to put on an ottoman? Oh well, what can you expect from a cheap Chinese ottoman for under $100? I'd pay twice as much if it had better quality vinyl.

The ottoman arrived with a tear in the leather vinyl. Since I am covering it with an ottoman slipcover I will not return it. Let the buyer beware! Defective product.

Stitching on the top of the ottoman was coming out. The company that sent it to us would not take it back but gave it to a local charity instead. Too much bother for us.

The price is cheap. The product cheaper! The picture looks much better than the actual box. No way would I embarrass myself by using it as an ottoman. I'm not a big fan of IKEA anyway and that's where this came from. Save the $40 bucks and spray paint a box instead.

The cheep leather cracked on the corner of the top. Only owned it for a month. Never even used it really.

Nice looking, sturdy for the money. Storage space. Updating review. Had this ottoman 9 months. We don't sit on it, only put feet up on it. The side seams are splitting.

Total Junk the corners split immediately. I left them in the package because they were a birthday gift for my husband. He put together and filled them with pillows. We opened the top maybe three times and corner split. Don't waste your money!

The buttons are comprised of two metal pieces which clip together. On my first order, a middle button shipped unclasped, and was bent so out of shape that it was not possible to fix. I returned it, and the same button on my replacement broke within 3 days. There is clearly a production issue on their end... I was not using the ottoman as anything other than a footrest.
