Great when coarse ground is needed
September 2, 2016
I've only used this a couple of times, but so far, I love it! I use a toddy cold brew coffee maker (which I also love) and you have to use coarse-ground coffee. At first, I was just buying whole beans at various stores that had grinders you could use, but that's not available at every store and it was annoying. I wanted a grinder that had settings for the grind. Other grinders don't have that and you have to figure out how many seconds to run it, and I'm way too lazy to do that. It's easy to take apart when needed. I don't really know why you have to choose how many cups you'll be grinding because the compartment is really small, but it's probably something I just didn't see in the manual. Best features for me: The cord is hidden. It's not a retractable cord - you actually pull down the bottom, wind the cord around, then push it back up so the cord is hidden. Other great feature is that there is a brush to brush out the compartments and it doesn't just come with the grinder - the grinder actually has a little compartment for the brush. I hate having a bunch of little pieces of appliances around so I love that is all-in-one. Really liking this grinder!
A great low-cost solution for grinding a lot of coffee
February 16, 2016
If you're making 1-2 servings of coffee, you should be using a burr grinder.

However, if you need to make a lot of coffee at once this is a great product! I first purchased this when I started making cold brew coffee. I needed a low-cost grinder that could grind larger amounts of beans as quickly as possible. This grinder was a great solution to my problem.

Form
This thing is pretty small and unobtrusive. If you need to keep it out in your kitchen, it matches well with glass and stainless steel items due to the color scheme. Aside from that, storing this thing is no problem. You can hide the cord inside a pop-out chamber in the base.

Function
Beans grind extremely fast. The grind consistency is not perfect, but close enough. Really good for a blade grinder.

Overall, I highly recommend it. Even though I use a burr grinder for single servings of coffee, I still use this when making a lot of coffee in a French Press or Cold Brew coffee.
Overly Engineered Coffee Grinder. I love it!
December 31, 2015
My wife and I received a bodum french press for Christmas. We started reading the instructions and noticed that the coffee needed to be a "course" grind. We already had a grinder however about the only mode it has is fine. So in order to make the most of our new gift I needed to find a coffee grinder that would let me dial in the type of grind I needed without breaking the bank. After reading many reviews on Amazon I decided to pull the trigger on this one. One of the things that I noticed and have been impressed with is how well engineered this thing is. The features on this little unit is amazing. These guys though of everything! Oh and the coffee grind turned out to be exactly what we needed. This is my FIRST Hamilton Beach product and so far I am very impressed. Thanks guys for making such a great and affordable product!
Crazy Quiet, No Mess Coffee Grinder !
October 12, 2015
Holy cow, this coffee grinder is truly AWESOME! I spent hours on Amazon looking at all the different coffee grinders. I read the reviews and a majority of people were saying you had to buy a $300 plus grinder to truly have good tasting coffee. So I was about to click the button on one of the high end grinders when I found this one. Heck for $22 why not try it? It arrived in 2 days and I am incredibly pleased! It is a blade grinder not a burr grinder. And yes I did see all the videos showing the coffee ground chunks you get from blade grinders and the incredibly loud noise that they make. So I opened up my fresh 2.5 pound bag of Starbucks Coffee from Costco to give the grinder a try. The lid twists off and then you twist out the blade/bowl container. Because I wanted to pre-grind some extra beans I just dipped the blade/bowl container into the bag of coffee and filled it up to the 12 mark. Since I make my coffee in a Aeropress I set the dial all the way to the right to the last setting for Expresso grind. Turns out the bottom button, which goes up and down vertically, is more of a timer button then a cups of coffee button. The higher the number the longer it grinds for, so I whipped that up to 12. Now this is the best part, you just push the start button and it turns on and shuts off when it is done. As it completes its cycle the ground coffee starts to build up on the sides so I hold the grinder with one hand on the counter and slightly slap the side so the grounds fall back into the blade, until it stops. Unplug the grinder, now turn it upside down over your sink and lightly slap it until all the grounds are in the lid. While upside down over the sink twist the lid off and you have your grounds. I had zero mess and NO chunky coffee grounds. As one reviewer said about coffee grinders if you are not a morning person 'do not buy' because it sounds like a 747 landing in your kitchen every morning. So I truly expected the worst. I was pleasantly surprised that there was very little noise. In fact, compared to many kitchen appliances it was silent, in my opinion. I got my sister on the phone and did a grinding for her. She actually said, when are you going to start grinding and I said it was already done hahaha. Now I am sure she was joking but to me and her it is very quiet. You have to wait 1 minute between grindings to cool down the motor so throughout the day I did 4 or 5 grindings. I am drinking those now. Yum, the coffee tastes so good compared to the Costco grinder at the store, I think I am drinking to much. This grinder truly opens up the full taste of the beans. Maybe a $300 ceramic conical burr grinder would taste even better but I am no coffee expert. So I am very happy with this grinder. Good Luck !
Good capacity and Accurate Grind Settings
January 5, 2015
At the time of writing this review I have had and used this grinder for one month. We use it only for coffee beans. We use it daily. Usually only at the 8 cup capacity (we love dark coffee) but have "maxed" out the capacity several times when making a large pot. Previously we had used a smaller Hamilton Beach grinder that we had gotten from Target. We hadn't used it very long when the blade detached from the motor and no longer ground the coffee beans. Because of that I wasn't sure about getting the same brand but because it wasn't the same model and it wasn't excessively expensive for the little appliance that it is we decided to get Hamilton Beach again.
As you can see in the photo there is quite the difference between our old broken hamilton beach and the new one.
So far I have no complaints. It does "travel" around the counter a little bit because of the impressive motor packed in this lil' guy but I think its cute. (Which we knew based on other reviews before we bought.) I like that I don't have to guess how long to keep it running. Because it has both grind texture (french press vs espresso) and how many beans are in there you can fiddle with both to get what you want.

Also recommend the "Coffee Grinder Cleaning Brush
February 16, 2017
I have turned into a coffee snob over the past decade or so, and had NO IDEA that a burr grinder would make such a humungo diff in the flavor of my Morning Addiction. OMG. How did I ever live without this??! Also recommend the "Coffee Grinder Cleaning Brush, Heavy Wood Handle & Natural Bristles Wood Dusting Espresso brush Accessories for Bean Grain Coffee Tool Barista Home Kitchen" to help get every bit of the grounds out of the plastic chamber. Cross-reference the brush review, it's awesome too and it helps with the static tendencies of the coffee. You can only do so much by tapping the chamber and it WILL piss you off to have so much coffee stuck in there, so go ahead and order the brush now.......you'll understand when you grind the coffee. You're welcome.
Burr grind at a good price
November 12, 2016
This is my second one in 8 years. I like it because it will grind more than one cup at the time. I use it to grind course for cold brewed coffee and you need more coffee as a rule. These things can be costly. I needed another and the price was still right.
Works Great!
June 11, 2016
They say if it isn't broke, don't fix it. Well, in this case, it was broke, but it lasted eight years! So, we had to replace it and why not go with the same unit when we had such great success using it to grind our daily coffee?! This is a very nice burr mill that we have gained much use from over the years and now we replace it with a brand new unit that is exactly like the other one and hoping we get another 8-10 years out of it.

Why do we like it?
* It has a nice look with the majority being shiny stainless steel housing.
* The hopper on the top holds a half pound of beans.
* You have a choice of 6 settings for every type of grind you choose.
* It does great on coarse grind for our French Press coffee, very uniform.
* You hit the button and it stops when it is done grinding.
* Once you figure out what grind you like, how much you want and what setting you prefer it is a simple process and then you just have to decide what kind of bean you want in there. It does the rest.
* It is fairly easy to clean up, doesn't take up too much space and best of all it works great and does it all quite fast.

If either of us had anything negative to say about it, we'd have to say it is loud, but then if you aren't hand grinding, what isn't loud when it comes to grinding coffee via electricity?

We're happy with the product or we wouldn't have purchased a second one of the same exact type eight years after the first one. Plus, it must be others feel the same because eight years later the company is still making the same model! Hope if you get one you like it!
Best value in a burr grinder
March 2, 2016
I strongly recommend the Cuisinart DBM-8 Supreme Grind Automatic Burr Mill. It is cheap ($50) for a burr grinder (burr is the only way to go for a consistent grind, blade grinders are cheaper but waste coffee), very easy to keep clean, and has a good sized storage hopper for beans. Intuitive controls (select # of cups, hit START), and automatic shutoff means no measurements are required. Simply grind and empty the contents into your coffeemaker. The grind selector is integrated into the hopper, so going from coarse to fine is as simple as turning the hopper to the desired size.Plus, it is a good looking addition to any kitchen.

Durable machine, but new higher price is unjustified.
December 5, 2016
I bought this grinder in February 2015 for ~$20. And I thought that that was a good price for the machine. I use either a drip machine or a pour-over with this machine, I have no experience with either a French press or a percolator, so I can't comment there. No spices either, just coffee.
It has been just shy of 2 years (it's November 2016 as I write this) and I see that the price has jumped to $50. I disagree with that decision. It's a good machine, but not *that* great.

It is a blade grinder with 5 grind sizes available, although I can visibly see that the grounds are not uniform in size--it does not bother me too much given that I paid $20 for a blade grinder. That's about what I'd expect. The coffee is still freshly ground and that by itself improves the taste! There is a little brush that clips onto the back of the device used for brushing out stray grounds around the blades. I find this very convenient. This machine was excellent space saver since it is compact and everything fits 'inside' of it.

Overall pros:
-In 2015 the price of $20 was well worth it.
-Electrical cord has a hidden storage compartment in the black base--very convenient!!
-Little brush included to sweep up grinds around blades.
-Quick grind time. No more than 30 seconds even for larger amounts
-Going on 2 years, still no major complaints or problems.
-Entire device comes apart for easy cleaning.
-SMALL. I had a tiny kitchen, this little guy saved a ton of space!

Overall cons:
-Ground results are visibly different, not as consistent as a burr grinder, but not bad enough to really bug me.
-Noisy. Maybe this is normal for a blade grinder, but it seems excessive.
-No way to get say, 6 servings or something else in the middle (although you can manually stop the blades by pushing the on button before a full cycle is complete).
-Current cost of $50 is too much for this in my opinion. If you're going to spend that much, get something with consistent grind size or other features!
Best small capacity grinder for $20-30 range.

This is a very decent little coffee grinder. Has several settings for the type of grind you want, depending on which coffee maker you're using.
It has a cord storage spot on the bottom that pops out that you wind the cord around, which is very useful.

One caveat is that this only grinds a small amount of coffee at a time. If you're looking to grind a lot of coffee in one go to use over the week, I would recommend looking at some of the larger capacity grinders. However, if you only need this for 1-2 people and you only plan on grinding the coffee fresh every day, this is perfect.

This grinder goes on sale for $18-20 quite often, so wait for a sale.
All you need are coffee beans!
September 21, 2016
Its a niffy, little coffee grinder! Has a pre-programmed 'on' button, big enough not to miss it! It gives you time, to get your cup ready!
I like the removable grinder cup. That leaves your fingers out of harms way!
There is a little scale toward the bottom, where I can pre-set the amount of cups to grind.
Also one on top for the consistency of the grind: perk, french, automatic etc.
8 tbsps of beans makes the grinder cup full !
I like that coffee grinder !
Easy Custom Grind
May 4, 2016
This is the 2nd of these grinders I've purchased. The 1st one lasted 4 1/2 years and was still working great, until I broke it. So, a word of caution before I go on to the actual review. Don't open the grinder lid until it finishes the grinding cycle. I had reset it to a very fine grind, for espresso, that doesn't work well for drip coffee, and forgot to reset it before grinding my coffee. I opened the lid to stop the grind, instead of using the on/off button, and doing so broke the locking piece, making it unusable. It only works when the lid is locked into place, so, if it doesn't lock, it won't work.

What I like best about this grinder is the simple and effective customization of the grind. It has a turn dial to adjust the grind from coarse to fine. It, also, has a sliding button to further customize the grind for the amount of beans you are grinding. These two adjustments make it very easy to customize the grind for any use. Once you've customized your settings, just add your beans to the chamber, lock the lid in place, and press the on/off button, which is in the center of the adjustment dial. It will stop automatically when your ground coffee is ready.

Other nice features of this grinder are the slide out cord storage and the removable grinding chamber. You can store the cord by pulling down the base, wrapping the cord, then re-closing the base. The removable grinding chamber makes for easy cleaning, without danger of getting water into the motor.
A year later, it's still working great
November 22, 2015
Owned this grinder for about a year. Very happy. It can grind to different sizes/courseness. We grind it to espresso grind for our Aeropress. When it arrived, it felt very light, plasticky, and cheaply made - I didn't think it would survive a month, but here we are a year later and its still in great condition after using it about every 2 weeks. One drawback is that it is small - it takes 7 rounds to grind 1 bag of beans, but each round takes about a minute, so it's manageable. I like that it comes with a little brush to scrape out all the grounds, and cord storage on the bottom. Also the inside cup with the blade is removable, which makes it really easy to wash and keep clean.

Excellent replacement for our 30 year old Braun burr grinder, which still works, but developed a hole in the plastic housing. Spinning grounds eroded through grinding chamber walls. Gave this new unit four stars instead of five due to initial difficulty in determining the correct timer setting on the slider control. We use 35 grams for our 2 1/2 cups of coffee each morning. It took close to one week of setting and weighing to find the setting. Fortunately, the result has stayed consistent allowing us to simply hit the start bar every morning to get our 35 grams. But, if we ever have guests, the amount will most likely be off. The only improvement needed is an accurate timer control based on where it’s set. This is an excellent grinder which we highly recommend. Once you get the timer setting you want, it will definitely provide accurate, repeatable amounts. The grind settings work flawlessly and absolutely no cleaning required for internal components. Keep the hopper full enough to avoid running out and hit the start switch for perfect coffee every time.
Excellent grinder, would buy again.
September 26, 2017
This is a fantastic grinder. The only two gripes I have aren't much, but they are gripes nonetheless:The vessel in which the grinds deposit collects so much static that it's mostly impossible to clean without the tiny coffee grounds flying every which way. There is a constant coating of very fine grinds all over the vessel and wall behind it, even if it's set to the coarsest grind. Without a tiny vacuum, it's hard to clean. The grinder won't run indefinitely. If you fill the hopper all the way up and set it to the largest amount, which is 18 cups, it will still stop halfway through with the vessel only halfway full of grinds. It means doing multiple batches if you're brewing a large amount (like for a cold brewer, etc). That said, it's great and I'm glad I own it.
LOUD, BUT HAS CHANGED TASTE OF COFFEE
July 22, 2017
I have not used this long, so I cannot comment on longevity, but I have read reviews from many people who have used this model for years. I am not a coffee snob, but just want at least one GOOD cup of coffee a day. Right now, I use a Keurig, or a Ninja coffee bar or a French press (just got started). For my needs, this works fine. I settled on this model after checking on a number of grinders in this price range and higher. Since I rarely make espresso, this grinder does everything I need and I can honestly say there is a difference in taste. The two cons I have are the cheapy brush that came with the unit (please buy a decent brush to keep your unit clean) and this thing is LOUD. The first time I used it, I thought there was an airplane taking off in my kitchen. Not really, but be prepared for the noise, which thankfully, only lasts a few seconds. A number of reviewers have also complained about the static, which you should expect as well. However, I have experienced the same issue no matter what grinder I've used in the past. I hope to use this for some time and I am happy with this purchase.
Overall it's pretty much "ok" and on par with other burr grinders ...
June 19, 2017
Overall it's pretty much "ok" and on par with other burr grinders in this price point.Good: Had a good consistent grind to it and relatively quiet compared to others we've had. Has a wide stance so doesn't vibrate all over the counter. Nice wide opening to the cup on the top to hold the beans. Nice styling too.Bad: The cup for the grounds is actually a bit too big. The opening is almost as big as most coffee filters and hard to not spill coffee grounds all over the sides. With the inevitable static that makes pouring grounds already difficult, the large opening makes that particularly messy. Also we've found that the cup doesn't go back into the grinder real easy. Is rather particular about how it goes back in and can be a nuisance.Overall, though, it's a decent grinder for the money and pretty good value. If you want the perfect burr grinder, you're going to have to have to pay 3 or 4 times this amount.
Easy, consistant, convenient grind (updated)
December 22, 2016
(Update at end of review)Having used a hand burr grinder for years, being able to simply press a button and get a good, consistent grind every morning is awesome. I haven't yet had an issue with the grounds being static charged and getting everywhere. The primary issue I have had preventing me from rating it higher is that I have, on multiple occasions already (11 days of use) had the beans get jammed in the drop tube from the upper hopper to the blades. Because the grinder simply runs for a set time, if the beans stop falling into the blade it just keeps running, and stops at the appointed time. Agitating the grinder usually solves the problem, but there is no way to know how much coffee has already been ground, and how much more needs to be ground, without then measuring ground coffee. When everything works normally, I simply press the start button and have the perfect amount of coffee for my morning pour-over. When it doesn't, I probably could have used my hand grinder and been done in less time.I have only used one type of bean, I will try a different brand/roast next time to see if that helps resolve the issue. However, a simple gravity feed, narrow tube, and the tendency of beans to bounce a bit when being ground make this seem inevitable. A friend owns the same grinder and has not had this issue.Update: refilled with beans roasted the day before I bought them, and have had no issue, so I bumped up the review by one star.
Good grinder at an affordable price.
December 7, 2016
This is the first burr grinder I have owned. I primarily bought this for more coarse and even grinding of coffee for use with my french press. It seems to do a fine job of grinding, and appears to be consistent with coarseness. I only have a couple complaints.1) (This may be common to all burr grinders) Even when grinding coarse, there is one spot in the output chamber that collects a very fine dust of coffee. Since it is all in one spot, it is easy to remove from the container, keeping the rest of the coarse grind separate. But it does produce a decent amount of fine dust even on the coarsest setting.2) I cannot imagine they could have made this unit louder, even if that had been a specific goal of the engineering team. This thing is LOUD. I typically do my grinds the day before, since grinding in the morning would wake the whole house. This isn't that big of a deal for me, but it might be for some, so I just wanted to note that. This is why I give it only 4 stars. I'm serious. It's loud. I mean, I typically start it up and leave the kitchen until it is done. I'm considering putting ear plugs in before I turn it on. I worry about permanent damage to the kids if they are getting a drink when I hit the "grind" button. My 4-year-old is terrified of it.Otherwise, seems to get the job done.

Cheap quality but it gets the job done
December 10, 2016
This little guy will grind your beans as desired, but the cheap quality shows.

After around 9 months of roughly once-weekly use it abruptly stopped working. I took it apart and found that the safety mechanism (metal switch that ensures the lid is secured) had stopped properly working. It was easy enough to bypass the safety switch to get it working again, but I will definitely look into upgrading a nicer option in the future.

If you're looking for a cheap, yet effective, grinder that you will use occasionaly, I would recommend this.
Good for drip coffee, not burr or espresso
February 13, 2016
Whether or not this is a good coffee grinder all depends on your needs. I bought this grinder when I was just starting drinking coffee and started buying whole beans for my drip coffee maker. For this purpose, this grinder is great. It grinds quickly, and is able to grind to a fairly uniform fineness. All the components attach and detach easily and are simple to clean. Also, the cord wraps nicely in the base of the grinder for storage.

Unfortunately, shortly after purchasing the grinder, I switched to a french press since I wanted a bolder and richer flavor. And, for those who don't know, french press' require the coffee to be coarsely ground. This grinder is not able to do this consistently. Even when set on the coarsest setting you still end up with a fair amount of fine particles which the french press screen doesn't filter out. These end up at the bottom of your coffee. If you are looking at a french press, I recommend getting a cheap adjustable burr grinder as this will provide a much more consistent course grind with a relatively small amount of work (about 3-5 minutes of relaxing grinding :) ).

The adjustment knob on the front only adjusts the time that the blade spins for. If you want very fine, the blade will spin for longer and vice versa.

Finally, if you are interested in making espresso I wouldn't recommend this grinder as it isn't able to go the fineness you likely desire. However, it is a great grinder for drip coffee.
It's okay, but not great
January 25, 2016
Pros:
-doesn't take a lot of space
-easy to clean
-wire tucks away easily

Cons:
-inconsistent grinding
-settings are useless

I've had this for 3 weeks now, use it everyday...and it's okay. I specifically got it because I have different coffee makers and I was attracted to it's multi-grind settings. However, at the larger grind settings, I find that it's very inconsistent. You get some beans that have been grounded to a powder, and then in the same batch you get completely untouched beans.

As a work-around, if you don't use the timed or size settings and just eyeball it and use your own judgment and start and stop manually, then you get better consistency, which kind of defeats the whole selling point of this machine.
Good for some, not for others
October 4, 2015
I used this grinder for a couple of months and thought I could provide some insight on the pros and cons for those considering making a purchase. I needed a grinder for my French Press and was hoping to find one which would provide consistent grind size for what I needed.

The grinder itself is small and doesn't take up a lot of space. The black portion of the bottom pulls out and you'll find the cord wrapped inside. (I liked this feature to ensure the grinder's overall footprint in my cupboard remains minimal.)

The plastic top twists off and the beans (which I measure to the gram) are deposited inside. The capacity is roughly 40g of coffee beans which is more than enough for most people making a single serving or a couple of cups. If you're needing to make a full pot, you may need to fill it more than once.

There are adjustments on the device which are supposed to change the grind depending on what is sought. I found by pulsing the power button on and off, I would get the best results. This was the first electric grinder I have purchased so I can't compare the noise level to anything else. I will say that I didn't find the noise level excessive, but I'd be reluctant to use it in the morning if the rest of the family is asleep.

As far as the grind consistency, I never really felt like it was spot on. Some of the grinds would get to the desired size, while others would be too large or too fine. By adjusting the number of beans in the grinder at a time, it would help. By filling the beans to the max capacity, it would tend to over-grind some too fine for what I was intending.

Cleaning is very easy and one of the most desirable parts of the grinder. Simply remove the clear cap and twist out the blade portion, give them a quick rinse, dry them, and pop them back in. Literally less than a minute and it's clean and ready to be used again.

So would I buy this again? For what I use it for (French Press) I would not. The grind level was too inconsistent to attain what I was shooting for. If you are looking for a more fine grind to be placed in a drip coffee system, I would say this would work ideally because it tends to do finer grinds better. I have since switched to a hand-powered burr grinder for my French Press and have finally achieved the consistent coarse grind I've been looking for. Depending on what your needs are, this grinder may or may not meet your needs.
OK for the price, not a lifetime appliance, should hold up better than it is.
January 10, 2015
I've had this for just about a year. I use it about every 4 or 5 days, grinding about 3 caps of bean each time., so it's run maybe 200 times. It was fine for the first 7-8 months. As some have mentioned, the grounds were not completely uniform at first, but I discovered that if I gave it a bit of a shake once or twice during grinding, it helped immensely. I think some of the beans got stuck at either the top (out of the blade) or at the bottom(ground the heck out of them) if I didn't shake or tip it. No problem at any settings, made some fine for espresso, some coarse for a press, but mostly on drip. However, while grinding one batch of beans which seemed to be oilier than normal, the motor had problems grinding, seemed to be straining to keep turning at speed. Maybe the oily beans were more resistance than dry beans, and the motor was barely strong enough? Since then, it make some odd noises and sounds like it doesn't spin uniformly (like grinding a clutch noise maybe) and the grounds are noticeably less uniform. For a shade over $20, I didn't expect a lifetime appliance, but I did expect it to hold up better than this after 200 uses or so. I see that there is supposedly a newer version out, although it says "currently unavailable" on the Amazon site. It looks like an identical machine with a new shape & color for the base. Could be a cosmetic change, or maybe they did something to beef up the motor? I hope so....

I'm a cold brewer and this is my review
September 3, 2017
A moderate grinder for my needs. It's more convenient than a cheap blade grinder. I "typicaly" brew cold coffee about every 3-4 days. I brew using a a common 2 quart brew system. Bottom line: I grind a lot of coarse coffee with this thing. It doesn't grind as coarse as I'd it to for cold brew, but it's close enough for a descent brew. It churns out a lot of very fine grounds that tends to stick you the edges of the catch bin, some of it in big clumps. I take the lid off and brush it out gently to help get a more even grind. Still not perfect, but faster than a blade grinder, and easily matchs my skill at achieving a semi-even grind. Cleanup can take forever if you're picky. The brush it comes with is small and stiff and helps, but it's not enough for the job at all.I also use a small artist paintbrush, and a can of electronics duster outside (does wonders!) The top unscrews and can go in the dishwasher with the catch bin, but the bin has developed a haze with repeated washes. The stainless is a bit of a pain to keep clean, but I don't have stainless appliances so I don't really know the proper cleaning techniques. The cord is long enough for my countertop and wraps nicely underneath. All in all, I'd buy it if I was on a budget and needed a grinder. I don't recommend it as an upgrade if you already own a grinder.
Grinding for drip machines as well as French Press works fine, as both the medium and coarse settings seem ...

Overall decent quality grinder for the price. I purchased one after a family member let me borrow theirs for a few days. Grinding for drip machines as well as French Press works fine, as both the medium and coarse settings seem consistant. Would give it a four stars, except for the fact that the grinder grinds a small portion of my coffee beans very VERY fine every time no matter the grind setting. There are some downsides to this grinder depending on the intended coffee method. For drip or French Press, works great. If grinding for Espresso or Turkish style coffee, I would not recommend. The grinder is on the loud side, so if you don't want to wake up your house mates in the morning you may want to skip this grinder. As for me, I have preground espresso roast that I buy from the store and all of the people I live with are out of the house by the time I grind my coffee. From what research I have done on BURR style grinders, there really is no other option in the price range of the Cuisinart DBM-8 that will solve the problems mentioned above. For the espresso purist or some one concerned about noise of the machine I would recommend spending more for a higher quality grinder. For the casual coffee user like my self this has suited most of my coffee needs.
good product
January 10, 2017
I bought this to replace an identical coffee grinder that eventually died after several years of use. We grind coffee at least once per day. I like the large hopper for beans so that I don't refill it so often. The one issue I have with this new grinder is that the amount of coffee it grinds doesn't seem consistent from day to day. it's also tricky to adjust the setting for how much coffee it grinds - it goes from not enough to waaay too much in about a millimeter of movement of the selector bar.
Save up for something better!
August 27, 2016
Given it's relatively low cost (by comparison), I really hoped I'd like this unit but I think I will end up trying to sell it. First, it has 18 grind settings but the difference from one setting to the next is basically imperceptible so there's a lot of trial and error. It could easily be pared down to 1/2 that many settings, maybe even a 1/3. That's more a comment than a complaint however. The biggest con of this unit is the plastic hopper (wish I had taken other reviewers comments more seriously) and the static cling. It is a royal PITA. Good coffee beans are not cheap and the waste and the mess from this hopper is unacceptable. You can't pour the ground coffee from the hopper directly into a filter basket as it makes a mess. I have to put it into a another (glass) container and even that makes a mess. Sorry Cuisinart, Reduce the number of settings, use a glass receptacle, and you'll have a really good product rather than an OK one.
no longer a must have for coffee lovers
June 4, 2016
I don't know what people are talking about with the plastic piece that is breaking off in the bean holder. This has been reported on competitors as well. I have this one and an expensive professional level one of a different brand where that breakage has been reported. Honestly, on either one you would have to be very rough with this to break it off. And there should be no reason one would be digging that roughly into the bottom of the holder to break that piece off. And no way could this be breaking on it's own.So here is the rest of my 2 cents. What is weak on this is the electronic switch. It is flimsy. But. I am one guy making one cup a day. I have it set at the lowest setting. 4 seconds for my No 2 filter that is just perfect for one cup of coffee. Need a second cup? Grind another 4 seconds. Give the machine a few good raps on the sides to get the spare grounds to fall out of the grinder into the lower catch. The recommended brush is handy for detailed cleaning. As long as you aren't harshly moving the switch, this should last you for years. Well worth the price on prime. Macy's is nearly double this price and not worth it. So if you are a coffee lover, know what you are doing and prefer that perfect cup of pour over this is for you.Compared to the other model at 8x the price, 3x taller and bulkier this is better. One mainly because there is an alpha label indicating fine to course. Where as the more expensive larger one. Though higher quality in manufacturing, only has a numerical value and you have to guess at the grind level and it will take a lot of beans to find that right consistency.I do own both, and like both. But for the cost/value. This is more worth it than the other brand/style mentioned above. Why minus one star? On both, you cannot remove the bean holder to do a more detailed cleaning of the grinder or to switch your beans for a different blend/roast. you must tip the whole machine over to clean it out. This is especially annoying on the bigger model listed above (remember, under a different brand) that weighs 20lbs. So given that fact, this weighing maybe 1 lbs w/o beans. it is much easier to tip to remove beans. But both should have a way to remove the holder. That is it. Pour over coffee lovers. This is a must. You get an even grind compared to conventional grinders leaving you with fines and large chunks. You get a more consistent grind with a burr grinder.Revised review. 3/11/2017This is only okay. I have not had any breakage issues. But the issue I do have is inconsistent grinds. I get way too many 'fines' that a burr grinder is supposed to reduce. It holds a good 10+ oz of beans in the hopper. but I no longer get a good cup of coffee because the grind is not very good. I tried adjusting it and tweeking it. but I get tiny fine grinds mixed in the medium course grinds resulting in a weak cup. The more expensive burr grinder that is heavier and 3 times the size gives me a perfect grind and great cup of coffee. 3 stars for size, and ease of use and apparent decent build quality. But if you TRULY like a perfect cup of coffee do not buy this.
still going from Jan 12, 2012....today is 12/1/2015
December 1, 2015
Where to start. We love our coffee...I mean love it, I use filtered water (poland spring), to brew my coffee, we order coffee from different coffee roasters nationwide to try a variety...we have our favorites..Burr grinder is the way to go, from coarse grinds for our French Press, to fine powder for our espresso machines. Why not 5 stars? Why only 3?It does it's job.But it's not built to last. I have had to taken this apart 3 times fix the switch under the device (I have bypassed this). We "tap" the coffee grinds down and the plastic on the underside of the tray has started to chip away. It's noisy. I feel like some insulation inside would make it much quieter for all.

It's great when it works.
August 30, 2017
I'm not sure if I received a bad unit but frequently it will not work. The clear lid also acts as a safety mechanism and when placed on the unit you have to twist the lid so it will lock in place. There is only one way to do this and I'm not doing it wrong. However frequently the unit will not grind and I have to fiddle with the unit lid to get it to grind. Frustrating to say the least especially when you need that cup of coffee.
Best Grinder... Until it Broke just after warranty ended
October 30, 2016
This grinder was amazing for just over a year. I loved how it ground the beans (with adjustable grinding levels) and that you could press a button to start it and walk away. You don't need to hold a button down the whole time you grind. The problem is that the plastic holding the blade in broke after we owned it for a little over a year. I tried to get a replacement, but the warranty had expired. We had a juicer, made by the same company, that broke in the exact same way. I will never purchase an item from this company that has a spinning mechanism. They seem to have the exact same poor quality. If you want to buy a new grinder every year or so, this is the grinder for you. When it works, it works very well.
Loved it at first, then it quit on me!
October 5, 2016
I really liked this item when I first got it, but it only lasted a little over a year and then it went caput without warning. It took longer than the Krups I bought to replace it as well. I am disappointed in this product since I was recommending it to everyone, then replacing it all too soon. I have never had a coffee grinder just quit like that! (I have several homes I put grinders in, so I have a lot of experience with them.)
2 months and broken!
February 9, 2016
I purchased this item 2 months ago and already a piece of the plastic on the lid has chipped off making the grinder useless. Without the lid closing properly the grinder will not turn on. I'm really disappointed in this product. Worked great when things weren't falling apart!
Nor can it produce coarser or finer grain in even size
November 29, 2015
I have bought it and used it for a couple months. Originally, I was surprised that the ground level of grinder can be adjusted at its price. However, after using that for a while. The so called "different level of grinding" is nothing but grinding longer or shorter. It can't even grind coffee beans thoroughly and evenly. Nor can it produce coarser or finer grain in even size. After grinding for a long time, there is still coarse grain in the grinder. Considering it price, the grinder is fair for those who only need a grinder to grind their coffee beans and do not care the grinding quality. However, if you are considering to buy this grinder for its adjustable settings on grinding size, you could think twice. The machine might not work as what you expected.
On my second one after 3 grinds
October 1, 2013
I originally ordered this grinder on Sept. 11 and received it on Sept. 14. At that time I did not have any whole beans to grind so I purchased a bag. I used this grinder 3 times before it just quit working!!!! I read in a previous review about taking it apart and cleaning the connections but that is ridiculous when it was basically brand new.Amazon was very good about replacing it. I received it today Oct 1.I came back online to see if that have a small appliance warranty for it but, in fact, they do not. Now I'm really skeptical.I gave it 2 stars because I like that you can set the different grinds and it does so automatically after you press the button. I live alone so I normally only make a half of a pot at a time but I grind the coffee for 2 days instead of doing it daily. Size wise for the amount of coffee I grind it works well. The star rating system says I don't like it based on the number of stars. Actually I do like the concept but I'm just not sure of how reliable it is going to be. Really, 3 times and it quits!! Unacceptable.I may grind the entire bag of coffee I have now just to make sure it keeps working. Kind of defeats the purpose but it would be a good test. For those reading this that are skeptical, I made sure both the bottom and top were locked in position. It did not overheat the motor because the 3 grinds were on different days.I really hope this one holds up. I like the features on it.Good luck, hope you get it good one.I'll update as to whether or not I have problems with my replacement.

Form over function
August 28, 2017
As a grinder, it works fine, but the design of the place where the grinds fall is terrible. First, it's made of plastic, which means static sticks the grinds to the sides and top. Second, the large, rectangular design means that it's next to impossible to dump the grinds into a coffee filter without them scattering everywhere. It looks good, but I recommend you get something else with a smaller, glass receptacle instead.
Really, really, really loud.
June 7, 2017
This works fine. It was my first burr grinder, and it's nice that it measures the amount for you and has multiple grind settings. The coffee tastes better than it did with a regular grinder. I decided to spend a little on this Cuisinart instead of what seemed like a lot on the KitchenAid. And I've had this for all of a couple of months. But I'm ordering the good one now. Don't waste your time and money and hearing. First, it's a complete mess, grinds everywhere because of the design and plastic cup. But the worst, worst thing: it's the loudest thing I've ever heard. It's just so loud. I didn't use my decibel meter but if I had, it would definitely be an osha violation. Like, it's so fricking loud. The cat runs and hides. It's louder than my husband's power tools and louder than any rock concert. And it's the first thing you hear in the morning. And so, you know, there it is. That's my review.
Not for espresso.
June 5, 2017
Not for espresso. This grinder cannot produce ground coffee fine enough for espresso machines. Even at the finest setting, the coffee is still too course. It is fine for grinding coffee for drip brewing. Look for a Beville grinder if you'd like something that can produce much finer ground coffee; but it is much more expensive than this one. I rated this 2 stars because while it does work, it doesn't work as specified and I had to immediately buy a new grinder to replace it.
Not good even for low price.
May 10, 2017
Pros: Easy to clean, easy to use.Cons: inconsistent grinds, settings don't change grind enough, can't grind fine enough for espresso, doesn't grind consistently enough for French press, lots of static cling in the grounds chamber.I picked this grinder up when it was on sale for $35. I should've known what I was getting at that price for a burr grinder. First of all this is a disk burr grinder NOT a conical burr grinder, if you really care about your coffee a conical burr grinder will give you a much better grind. But back to this grinder, there are different courseness settings but they don't actually change the grind all that much. This grinder also doesn't grind fine enough for espresso, and the course setting is not consistent enough for French press, you will have lots of fine grinds in your coffee that don't get pressed out. This grinder will work fine for people who use autodrip machines with paper filters, there will be some fine grounds that will make it through reusable filters. The plastic grounds chamber is not the best either, the grounds really like to stick to it's surfaces and you will need to wash it out and dry it after every use. This unit is easy to use, and easy to clean. It includes a cheap cleaning brush. The bean storage is not airtight, but at this price I didn't expect that. I would not recommend this grinder to others.
Spewed coffee grounds all over the kitchen
May 5, 2017
The pro:It will grind coffee (most of the time, see below). The cons:First of all this is a large item, not for small kitchens. Will not grind very fine, not even close. The worst part is that sometimes it will surprise you and expel the ground caffee all over your kitchen. Nothing like having to sweep, vaccuum and spend an hour cleaning one's kitchen BEFORE a cup of coffee. The machine quit two days after warranty wore out.The customer wants cheap, the cheaper the better, the manufacturers oblidge. Don't complain about getting junk when you want cheap cheap cheap.
Decent product. Less than ideal return process.
March 30, 2017
Got this grinder as a Christmas present in 2016. Worked really well for the first four months (thus, the two stars), but today, it stopped working. Grinding slowed, then stopped. Opened the lid and smelled melted plastic. So I called the CuisineArt customer service line. They warranty their products for 18 months--that's good, and they'll ship a new unit out right away, but the unfortunate customer will be liable for a $10.00 shipping and return shipping fee for a replacement. Also, the return box does won't have the return address on it (the rep had to give me that address). AND, if that wasn't enough, I was also given a 15 character "service number" to write on the outside of the box as well as on a piece of paper that was to be inserted inside the box, along with my check for $10.00. I guess I've been spoiled by Amazon's very friendly return process. CuisineArt's return process is very customer unfriendly and I get to pay $10.00 for the privilege? Nope. I'll look for another grinder from another company, and I'll keep this experience in mind when I shop for other CuisineArt products knowing this may be my misfortune again if another product dies under warranty. Thankfully, other options are available.

Died within 2 months, apparently not uncommon
June 7, 2017
If I had written this review shortly after I got this grinder it would have had 4 or 5 stars, but after 2 months, it completely stopped working. I contacted the seller through Amazon, and they would not cover it after one month. Other reviews on the Hamilton Beach site also complain of the grinder biting the dust after a short time. We took it apart and found that some of the parts connected to the tab that lets the grinder know the top is locked on were made of plastic and were melted!
Stopped working
May 18, 2017
This worked well for ~8 months. Then it just stopped working. Won't turn on. Nothing.Called company. They said it's still under warranty, so they can send me a new one, but I am responsible for paying for shipping (which is almost the same price as buying a new one).Garbage.
Stopped working within 8 months.
June 6, 2016
I bought this in November 2015, so about 7-8 months ago, and it just suddenly stopped working. It was used maybe once a week on average for coffee beans (never anything else), it was cleaned properly, and it was never dropped/mishandled that might break something. It worked one day and the next it just didn't. I tried taking out and putting back the grinding cup and the lid to ensure they were in the correct locked position. I tried multiple electrical outlets. I tried with different quantities of coffee beans, and empty. Still no luck, the blades just don't turn, the motor doesn't engage. So frustrating. It was fine while it was working, and I don't expect something like this to last forever, but at least a couple years seems reasonable.I'm so not looking forward to wasting time dealing with the 1-800 number and dealing with customer service and all the warranty issues.
dangerous safety flaw
November 2, 2015
Loved it till tonight when I discovered a major safety issue. The grinder started and accidentally tipped over on the counter. The lid popped off and to my surprise the blade just kept spinning and shooting coffee beans everywhere. I could not reach the outlet to unplug it and I was afraid to grab it, so I had to wait for its cycle to finish.
Works for a very short time as described.

I've had this grinder for 6-12 months now and I really liked it at first. However, I can no longer say I would recommend this to anyone who grinds coffee on a daily basis. The removable cup is now fused (melted?) to the the metal part that turns the blade. It still works but the cup no longer comes out which defeats the whole purpose of why I purchased this model. I use anything from a french press, aeropress, moka pot, to pour over. I now have to use a funnel to make sure more coffee grounds go into the device I am using and not all over the counter.Buyer beware with this one.**Update** 1/1/16Grinder still works but the timer does not. It is now a manual "guess" as to how long I think amount of beans I added need to be grinded for and the plastic part (cup) sitill does not separate no matter what I do. I tried many things to unscrew it but no luck so I still have to use the funnel from the Aeropress I bought unrelated to this item. It really irks me that I have to go through all the trouble. Go for a different coffee grinder as you will only resent this purchase.
New experience for me
April 23, 2014
I've never had a product from any manufacturer quit in 30 days, but that's exactly what happened with this HB coffee grinder..it was ok while it worked..it's not even worth the trouble to return it...beware!Update:I threw this grinder out and bought the Krups from Amazon.I like its power, but it's too early to comment on reliability. One thing though, getting the coffee grinds out of the grinder and into the coffee maker is a hastle(as is cleanup) as the Krups does not have a removable cup for the ground coffee...you can't win!

Had decent results with longevity with previous grinders, but had a used grinder sent to me.
October 16, 2017
I've had 2 of these - one for 11+ years and my SO has abused it as he can drink pots of coffee and it's still going strong. I bought another one for another house about 4 years ago and it started making noises and croaked about 2 weeks ago. The latest one was used on weekends only and only 6-8 cup grinds, so I'm on the fence about the quality given the two different experiences.I ordered another this last weekend to replace the dead machine and I've just opened a box with a used mill in it - coffee beans in the top and grounds in the reservoir along with no booklet, fingerprints all over and no packaging besides broken cardboard that I'll have to figure out how to get in the box. Sending it back for a replacement and will hopefully get the twin of my first grinder...and unused!
You’ll get about 9 mos and then it may catch on fire
October 13, 2017
Bought in January 2017. It’s October 10, 2017 and every time we use it, it smokes like it’s ready to catch on fire. Does it come with a warranty. Yes! 18 month warranty which is generous But we have to pay for shipping ($10) and as they state on their web site “To facilitate the speed and accuracy of your return, please enclose a check or money order for $4.00 for shipping and handling. (California residents need only supply proof of purchase and should call 1-800-726-0190 for shipping instructions.)” so I’m out 35 bucks, need to spend another +/-15 to replace it. Don’t think so. We have quite a few cuisinarts in our household and that will end today.
Not for espresso or even French press!!!
October 8, 2017
I had high hopes for this "burr" grinder, but had to return immediately. I found that the course (or even medium for that matter) is wayyyy too course for even a French press. I ended up with tea looking coffee. Tried the "fine" setting for a shot of espresso and was not even close to fine enough. Our $10 spice grinder works way better at grinding than this for both espresso and French press. Don't bother with this one.
Too darn loud and..
September 23, 2017
Have owned an older and more expensive Cuisinart conical Burr grinder for probably 8 years which was great until it wasn't. Thought I would try a less expensive model but it would not shut off automatically - had to pull the plug. The switch is very flimsy and it was very slow to grind the beans.Which brings me to the major problem, the NOISE is deafening. Not just the decibels but the pitch. Sounds like a jet airplane taking off. Saw reviews that this was loud but on some youtube videos, it didn't seem to be as screechingly unbearable to the point where I had to block the ears or leave the room when it was grinding beans. See attached screenshot of decibel test.Because it seemed very slow, maybe the beans were not going through the grinder at the correct rate, which would affect the sound of the motor. Also read many reviews that it breaks after a few months after I decided to return it.
Great until it wasn't.
September 9, 2017
Grinder was bought a month ago and has failed after a single small bag of coffee. Worked yesterday great but today failed to turn on. When i contacted the customer service from Cuisinart i was told that i would need to contact Amazon to fix the issue. Amazon of course is taking care of me but its bad when the customer service for an item is non existent.Overall the grinder worked well at first. No wierd noises or smells from the motor and its super easy to keep clean. I like that i could just twist to adjust the grind setting and it holds plenty of coffee in the upper and lower bins. Just wish the customer service from Cuisinart was better.
disappointed with Cusinart - is it on the decline?
July 4, 2017
Purchased it last December and it just died. No motor activity... checked blades to find them move freely.. no jams. I had old one that worked for years and was disappointed to find new one not lasting long. I have another one in another home that also died. So disappointed. I noticed same complaints from others concerning same issue. I will call Cuisinart tomorrow.Update: I called Cuisinart... the rep was nice and said it is under warranty. They will ship a new one to me. I was told I have to pay $10 to ship the old back! I protested and said I will use other shipper which is cheaper than UPS. The fee is waived but I have to bring it to a shipper to ship it back. Buyer beware!!! You have to pay to ship broken or defective product under warranty back to Cuisinart! I have other Cuisinart appliances.... I think I will not buy another Cuisinart appliances again.
