Great when coarse ground is needed
September 2, 2016
I've only used this a couple of times, but so far, I love it! I use a toddy cold brew coffee maker (which I also love) and you have to use coarse-ground coffee. At first, I was just buying whole beans at various stores that had grinders you could use, but that's not available at every store and it was annoying. I wanted a grinder that had settings for the grind. Other grinders don't have that and you have to figure out how many seconds to run it, and I'm way too lazy to do that. It's easy to take apart when needed. I don't really know why you have to choose how many cups you'll be grinding because the compartment is really small, but it's probably something I just didn't see in the manual. Best features for me: The cord is hidden. It's not a retractable cord - you actually pull down the bottom, wind the cord around, then push it back up so the cord is hidden. Other great feature is that there is a brush to brush out the compartments and it doesn't just come with the grinder - the grinder actually has a little compartment for the brush. I hate having a bunch of little pieces of appliances around so I love that is all-in-one. Really liking this grinder!
A great low-cost solution for grinding a lot of coffee
February 16, 2016
If you're making 1-2 servings of coffee, you should be using a burr grinder.

However, if you need to make a lot of coffee at once this is a great product! I first purchased this when I started making cold brew coffee. I needed a low-cost grinder that could grind larger amounts of beans as quickly as possible. This grinder was a great solution to my problem.

Form
This thing is pretty small and unobtrusive. If you need to keep it out in your kitchen, it matches well with glass and stainless steel items due to the color scheme. Aside from that, storing this thing is no problem. You can hide the cord inside a pop-out chamber in the base.

Function
Beans grind extremely fast. The grind consistency is not perfect, but close enough. Really good for a blade grinder.

Overall, I highly recommend it. Even though I use a burr grinder for single servings of coffee, I still use this when making a lot of coffee in a French Press or Cold Brew coffee.
Overly Engineered Coffee Grinder. I love it!
December 31, 2015
My wife and I received a bodum french press for Christmas. We started reading the instructions and noticed that the coffee needed to be a "course" grind. We already had a grinder however about the only mode it has is fine. So in order to make the most of our new gift I needed to find a coffee grinder that would let me dial in the type of grind I needed without breaking the bank. After reading many reviews on Amazon I decided to pull the trigger on this one. One of the things that I noticed and have been impressed with is how well engineered this thing is. The features on this little unit is amazing. These guys though of everything! Oh and the coffee grind turned out to be exactly what we needed. This is my FIRST Hamilton Beach product and so far I am very impressed. Thanks guys for making such a great and affordable product!
Crazy Quiet, No Mess Coffee Grinder !
October 12, 2015
Holy cow, this coffee grinder is truly AWESOME! I spent hours on Amazon looking at all the different coffee grinders. I read the reviews and a majority of people were saying you had to buy a $300 plus grinder to truly have good tasting coffee. So I was about to click the button on one of the high end grinders when I found this one. Heck for $22 why not try it? It arrived in 2 days and I am incredibly pleased! It is a blade grinder not a burr grinder. And yes I did see all the videos showing the coffee ground chunks you get from blade grinders and the incredibly loud noise that they make. So I opened up my fresh 2.5 pound bag of Starbucks Coffee from Costco to give the grinder a try. The lid twists off and then you twist out the blade/bowl container. Because I wanted to pre-grind some extra beans I just dipped the blade/bowl container into the bag of coffee and filled it up to the 12 mark. Since I make my coffee in a Aeropress I set the dial all the way to the right to the last setting for Expresso grind. Turns out the bottom button, which goes up and down vertically, is more of a timer button then a cups of coffee button. The higher the number the longer it grinds for, so I whipped that up to 12. Now this is the best part, you just push the start button and it turns on and shuts off when it is done. As it completes its cycle the ground coffee starts to build up on the sides so I hold the grinder with one hand on the counter and slightly slap the side so the grounds fall back into the blade, until it stops. Unplug the grinder, now turn it upside down over your sink and lightly slap it until all the grounds are in the lid. While upside down over the sink twist the lid off and you have your grounds. I had zero mess and NO chunky coffee grounds. As one reviewer said about coffee grinders if you are not a morning person 'do not buy' because it sounds like a 747 landing in your kitchen every morning. So I truly expected the worst. I was pleasantly surprised that there was very little noise. In fact, compared to many kitchen appliances it was silent, in my opinion. I got my sister on the phone and did a grinding for her. She actually said, when are you going to start grinding and I said it was already done hahaha. Now I am sure she was joking but to me and her it is very quiet. You have to wait 1 minute between grindings to cool down the motor so throughout the day I did 4 or 5 grindings. I am drinking those now. Yum, the coffee tastes so good compared to the Costco grinder at the store, I think I am drinking to much. This grinder truly opens up the full taste of the beans. Maybe a $300 ceramic conical burr grinder would taste even better but I am no coffee expert. So I am very happy with this grinder. Good Luck !
Good capacity and Accurate Grind Settings
January 5, 2015
At the time of writing this review I have had and used this grinder for one month. We use it only for coffee beans. We use it daily. Usually only at the 8 cup capacity (we love dark coffee) but have "maxed" out the capacity several times when making a large pot. Previously we had used a smaller Hamilton Beach grinder that we had gotten from Target. We hadn't used it very long when the blade detached from the motor and no longer ground the coffee beans. Because of that I wasn't sure about getting the same brand but because it wasn't the same model and it wasn't excessively expensive for the little appliance that it is we decided to get Hamilton Beach again.
As you can see in the photo there is quite the difference between our old broken hamilton beach and the new one.
So far I have no complaints. It does "travel" around the counter a little bit because of the impressive motor packed in this lil' guy but I think its cute. (Which we knew based on other reviews before we bought.) I like that I don't have to guess how long to keep it running. Because it has both grind texture (french press vs espresso) and how many beans are in there you can fiddle with both to get what you want.

A coffee drinker's best friend!
August 28, 2017
I love love love having my morning coffee every day, and I never buy ground coffee, only whole beans. I grind my own beans so regularly that the motor in my old grinder stopped working completely. So off I went to search for a replacement on Amazon. There were plenty of models that were cheaper than this KitchenAid model, but I opted for this due to the 1 year warranty and a brand name that I trust. It helps that it matches my other KitchenAid appliances, too.All I can say is WOW – what an upgrade! Not only is the lid washable, the interior stainless steel cylinder is removable, so it's easy to wash without worrying about damaging the motor with water. The consistency of the grind is nothing short of beautiful, too. My beans were ground to perfection, making for the most wonderful pot of french pressed coffee I've made to date. Thanks, KitchenAid!
The "NEW standard" basic coffee grinder!
July 1, 2017
Love it, so far. Coming from a Krups that got lost in a move. This is a big step up. The bottom basket can be removed for easy cleaning; a great feature! Compared to the Krups, it also oscillates and lifts the contents more, creating a more even grind, and allows me to get a nice course grind for the French Press. Also, noticeably more quiet than a couple other basic blade grinders I've used. Highly recommend! As always, I will update if anything changes.
Exceeds my expectations!!
April 19, 2017
Exactly what I was looking for in a grinder. It looks good, is fast and very easy to clean! The instructions give you an estimate of how long to grind which does indeed help. You can also see the grinds well so you know if you are done or not. The removable grinding cup is a HUGE plus as I had an old similar grinder that did not have this. Some have said that grounds get stuck under the blade...but a sharp tap on the cup and they fall out easily. I used to loath grinding my beans because of the mess...not anymore!!
I love the color which matches other appliances I have
February 5, 2017
First coffee grinder I've ever used. It works very well. 10 seconds for enough coffee for 4 cups ground perfectly. I love the color which matches other appliances I have. It's small and looks nice when not in use. Easy to clean. Follow the instructions to learn how it goes together, wash it well, let it dry and have some freshly ground coffee. I never needed one until I brought back some truly awesome coffee from the islands but had no way to grind it. Now I'm enjoying that delicious coffee the way it was meant to be enjoyed.I've had this little grinder for a few months now and I love it! It works great, is small enough to be kept on the counter for when I need it, and it really looks nice with my other red items. I am hooked on buying beans and keeping them stored until time to make coffee. Amazing how much better coffee tastes when freshly ground.
I like good coffee
May 30, 2016
I grew up in San Francisco and lived in Seattle for a long time. In other words, I like good coffee! I know that there are coffee purists who will pooh pooh anything but a burr grinder, but frankly I can't tell the difference between a burr grinder and this one. I had a Cuisinart DCG-12BC that died after a year. Bought another one. Died. Enough of the Cuisinart brand. So I replaced it with this. And I'm super happy with it. It looks nice, but more importantly it does an excellent job of grinding coffee and doesn't spill everywhere when you dump out the grounds, which the Krups F203 does every single time. I've had mine a year, and it seems to be going strong. I'm buying another one for our other house.
COFFEE/NUT FLOUR/MEAL CONVERSION/SPICE opinions
December 22, 2013
1. COFFEE GRINDER: I am not a coffee snob. So if you are, this review is not for you. The grinder did just find converting whole beans to moka-pot grade. I didn't overfill and the grind seemed even. I have never used a burr mill for coffee, so I cannot compare.2. NUT GRINDER: I put my hazelnuts 1st in the food processor, then in this coffee grinder. Do NOT use the spice grinders for this. Excellent! I was able to substitute this for any almond flour plus oil. Keep in mind nuts are oily, so flour mills generally won't work for nut flours. This two step process did. I would assume other reviews complaining that nuts are too much for this grinder probably used whole nuts, which I would not try on this.3. FLOUR GRINDER: I put cassava meal into this and ground it into cassava flour fine enough to make tortillas with. I would suspect other meals (millet, quinoa, etc) would work the same.4. SPICE GRINDER: I haven't tried it, but I love that I have separate cups for spices, as it's REALLY hard to get the spice taste out of my other coffee grinder. Since we can take off the cup completely, it's easier to clean fairly thoroughly.

Durable machine, but new higher price is unjustified.
December 5, 2016
I bought this grinder in February 2015 for ~$20. And I thought that that was a good price for the machine. I use either a drip machine or a pour-over with this machine, I have no experience with either a French press or a percolator, so I can't comment there. No spices either, just coffee.
It has been just shy of 2 years (it's November 2016 as I write this) and I see that the price has jumped to $50. I disagree with that decision. It's a good machine, but not *that* great.

It is a blade grinder with 5 grind sizes available, although I can visibly see that the grounds are not uniform in size--it does not bother me too much given that I paid $20 for a blade grinder. That's about what I'd expect. The coffee is still freshly ground and that by itself improves the taste! There is a little brush that clips onto the back of the device used for brushing out stray grounds around the blades. I find this very convenient. This machine was excellent space saver since it is compact and everything fits 'inside' of it.

Overall pros:
-In 2015 the price of $20 was well worth it.
-Electrical cord has a hidden storage compartment in the black base--very convenient!!
-Little brush included to sweep up grinds around blades.
-Quick grind time. No more than 30 seconds even for larger amounts
-Going on 2 years, still no major complaints or problems.
-Entire device comes apart for easy cleaning.
-SMALL. I had a tiny kitchen, this little guy saved a ton of space!

Overall cons:
-Ground results are visibly different, not as consistent as a burr grinder, but not bad enough to really bug me.
-Noisy. Maybe this is normal for a blade grinder, but it seems excessive.
-No way to get say, 6 servings or something else in the middle (although you can manually stop the blades by pushing the on button before a full cycle is complete).
-Current cost of $50 is too much for this in my opinion. If you're going to spend that much, get something with consistent grind size or other features!
Best small capacity grinder for $20-30 range.
October 5, 2016
This is a very decent little coffee grinder. Has several settings for the type of grind you want, depending on which coffee maker you're using.
It has a cord storage spot on the bottom that pops out that you wind the cord around, which is very useful.

One caveat is that this only grinds a small amount of coffee at a time. If you're looking to grind a lot of coffee in one go to use over the week, I would recommend looking at some of the larger capacity grinders. However, if you only need this for 1-2 people and you only plan on grinding the coffee fresh every day, this is perfect.

This grinder goes on sale for $18-20 quite often, so wait for a sale.
All you need are coffee beans!
September 21, 2016
Its a niffy, little coffee grinder! Has a pre-programmed 'on' button, big enough not to miss it! It gives you time, to get your cup ready!
I like the removable grinder cup. That leaves your fingers out of harms way!
There is a little scale toward the bottom, where I can pre-set the amount of cups to grind.
Also one on top for the consistency of the grind: perk, french, automatic etc.
8 tbsps of beans makes the grinder cup full !
I like that coffee grinder !
Easy Custom Grind
May 4, 2016
This is the 2nd of these grinders I've purchased. The 1st one lasted 4 1/2 years and was still working great, until I broke it. So, a word of caution before I go on to the actual review. Don't open the grinder lid until it finishes the grinding cycle. I had reset it to a very fine grind, for espresso, that doesn't work well for drip coffee, and forgot to reset it before grinding my coffee. I opened the lid to stop the grind, instead of using the on/off button, and doing so broke the locking piece, making it unusable. It only works when the lid is locked into place, so, if it doesn't lock, it won't work.

What I like best about this grinder is the simple and effective customization of the grind. It has a turn dial to adjust the grind from coarse to fine. It, also, has a sliding button to further customize the grind for the amount of beans you are grinding. These two adjustments make it very easy to customize the grind for any use. Once you've customized your settings, just add your beans to the chamber, lock the lid in place, and press the on/off button, which is in the center of the adjustment dial. It will stop automatically when your ground coffee is ready.

Other nice features of this grinder are the slide out cord storage and the removable grinding chamber. You can store the cord by pulling down the base, wrapping the cord, then re-closing the base. The removable grinding chamber makes for easy cleaning, without danger of getting water into the motor.
A year later, it's still working great
November 22, 2015
Owned this grinder for about a year. Very happy. It can grind to different sizes/courseness. We grind it to espresso grind for our Aeropress. When it arrived, it felt very light, plasticky, and cheaply made - I didn't think it would survive a month, but here we are a year later and its still in great condition after using it about every 2 weeks. One drawback is that it is small - it takes 7 rounds to grind 1 bag of beans, but each round takes about a minute, so it's manageable. I like that it comes with a little brush to scrape out all the grounds, and cord storage on the bottom. Also the inside cup with the blade is removable, which makes it really easy to wash and keep clean.

Grinds very fine very fast.
June 20, 2017
We bought this blade grinder because our old one, also a KitchenAid, died the good death after about 8 years. I figured anything that lasted that long with no issues would be worth replacing with the same brand. I like the design of this, how little room it takes up, but the grind is just a little finer than I am used to and there is a small amount of "sludge" at the bottom of our french press coffee that wasn't there before. Maybe we're still trying to get the timing right on the grind, but the old one didn't grind as fine as fast. Still happy with it, it's a great grinder for the price.
Nice grinder
June 3, 2017
We grind or coffee beans daily and so far this little grinder works pretty well. Just wish it was a little bit more powerful but it still gets the job done quickly. Has been in daily use now for 5 months and is working like day one. Would have given five stars for a little more power like the one we had before this one.
Simple coffee grinder that has become a staple in my kitchen.
May 24, 2017
If you are just getting into grinding your own coffee or don't care for anything fancy this is the coffee grinder for you. It's very basic and simple to use and it does a great job at grinding coffee and other dried spices. The grind isn't always super even, there will be some larger chunks of coffee bean but life isn't perfect and it does a great job for only being about $25. I use it every morning to grind my coffee and it always comes out great for my french press. That being said, if coffee is your "thing" and a super even grind is your life goal then do not buy this grinder. There are more expensive options out there that will probably suit you better and make you happier. But again, if you are just looking for a simple coffee grinder then this is the one for you.
Very happy... wait a second... {sip} {sip} ahhh
December 16, 2016
I waited a couple months to write this as there was so much conflicting information in the reviews that I wanted to have an experienced opinion.None of the complaints were correct... it works perfectly, I gave it 4 stars as its a basic model and doesn't have advanced setting like grin level etc, but if you just want to grind your own beans for fresh coffee its great. Simple and easy.I actually just made myself a fresh cup of coffee before sitting down... hold on... {sip} ahhhh,,, that's the stuff. One review complained about coffee getting stuck under the blade, and while coffee can get stuck if you over grind by grinding too long or put in too many beans (I usually grind about half a cup of beans at a time), I quickly found that I only had to grind for 10 seconds to get the grind I needed. I suspect the complainer was over-grinding or filling the grinder passed the recommended max bean level. And even when it sticks a little to the bottom (I over grinded the second time I used it and it stuck a little), I have a separate container I use to store a few days worth of ground beans and I turn the removable grind cup upside down and tap it into my container. Its not that hard, and you can easily spin the blade with a knife to loosen any stuck coffee if you overdid it. Hardly an issue, and I would expect all grinders have to be handled in the same manner.

I loved the grinder itself if you are looking for a no frills, simple coffee grinder. There are plenty more for very specific measuring and types of course-ness, but this is just a push it and done grinder. Works great. Had a bit of trouble getting the cup out of the main machine to be able to clean it, but after a few uses got a bit easier.
Great Grinder but shipped with a defect in the cord
January 8, 2016
I was excited to receive this grinder, a KitchenAid! Considering that this product came from and was Shipped from Amazon, I would have thought there would have been some Quality Control before shipping. I guess, the package is NOT opened prior to shipping for inspection. I did not notice at first that the cord has a double insulation but in one spot the insulation has a cut in it. The 2nd insulation layer is solid, and therefore I will continue using the grinder as it is, but was disappointed that it was shipped with a defect. As for the grinder itself, it does exactly what it is described to do on the KitchenAid website and is quiet and efficient.http://www.amazon.com/KitchenAid-BCG111ES-Blade-Coffee-Grinder/dp/B00AB6QT44/ref=sr_1_fkmr0_1?s=kitchen&ie=UTF8&qid=1452269808&sr=1-1-fkmr0&keywords=KitchenAid+BCG111ES+Blade+C

Cheap quality but it gets the job done
December 10, 2016
This little guy will grind your beans as desired, but the cheap quality shows.

After around 9 months of roughly once-weekly use it abruptly stopped working. I took it apart and found that the safety mechanism (metal switch that ensures the lid is secured) had stopped properly working. It was easy enough to bypass the safety switch to get it working again, but I will definitely look into upgrading a nicer option in the future.

If you're looking for a cheap, yet effective, grinder that you will use occasionaly, I would recommend this.
Good for drip coffee, not burr or espresso
February 13, 2016
Whether or not this is a good coffee grinder all depends on your needs. I bought this grinder when I was just starting drinking coffee and started buying whole beans for my drip coffee maker. For this purpose, this grinder is great. It grinds quickly, and is able to grind to a fairly uniform fineness. All the components attach and detach easily and are simple to clean. Also, the cord wraps nicely in the base of the grinder for storage.

Unfortunately, shortly after purchasing the grinder, I switched to a french press since I wanted a bolder and richer flavor. And, for those who don't know, french press' require the coffee to be coarsely ground. This grinder is not able to do this consistently. Even when set on the coarsest setting you still end up with a fair amount of fine particles which the french press screen doesn't filter out. These end up at the bottom of your coffee. If you are looking at a french press, I recommend getting a cheap adjustable burr grinder as this will provide a much more consistent course grind with a relatively small amount of work (about 3-5 minutes of relaxing grinding :) ).

The adjustment knob on the front only adjusts the time that the blade spins for. If you want very fine, the blade will spin for longer and vice versa.

Finally, if you are interested in making espresso I wouldn't recommend this grinder as it isn't able to go the fineness you likely desire. However, it is a great grinder for drip coffee.
It's okay, but not great
January 25, 2016
Pros:
-doesn't take a lot of space
-easy to clean
-wire tucks away easily

Cons:
-inconsistent grinding
-settings are useless

I've had this for 3 weeks now, use it everyday...and it's okay. I specifically got it because I have different coffee makers and I was attracted to it's multi-grind settings. However, at the larger grind settings, I find that it's very inconsistent. You get some beans that have been grounded to a powder, and then in the same batch you get completely untouched beans.

As a work-around, if you don't use the timed or size settings and just eyeball it and use your own judgment and start and stop manually, then you get better consistency, which kind of defeats the whole selling point of this machine.
Good for some, not for others
October 4, 2015
I used this grinder for a couple of months and thought I could provide some insight on the pros and cons for those considering making a purchase. I needed a grinder for my French Press and was hoping to find one which would provide consistent grind size for what I needed.

The grinder itself is small and doesn't take up a lot of space. The black portion of the bottom pulls out and you'll find the cord wrapped inside. (I liked this feature to ensure the grinder's overall footprint in my cupboard remains minimal.)

The plastic top twists off and the beans (which I measure to the gram) are deposited inside. The capacity is roughly 40g of coffee beans which is more than enough for most people making a single serving or a couple of cups. If you're needing to make a full pot, you may need to fill it more than once.

There are adjustments on the device which are supposed to change the grind depending on what is sought. I found by pulsing the power button on and off, I would get the best results. This was the first electric grinder I have purchased so I can't compare the noise level to anything else. I will say that I didn't find the noise level excessive, but I'd be reluctant to use it in the morning if the rest of the family is asleep.

As far as the grind consistency, I never really felt like it was spot on. Some of the grinds would get to the desired size, while others would be too large or too fine. By adjusting the number of beans in the grinder at a time, it would help. By filling the beans to the max capacity, it would tend to over-grind some too fine for what I was intending.

Cleaning is very easy and one of the most desirable parts of the grinder. Simply remove the clear cap and twist out the blade portion, give them a quick rinse, dry them, and pop them back in. Literally less than a minute and it's clean and ready to be used again.

So would I buy this again? For what I use it for (French Press) I would not. The grind level was too inconsistent to attain what I was shooting for. If you are looking for a more fine grind to be placed in a drip coffee system, I would say this would work ideally because it tends to do finer grinds better. I have since switched to a hand-powered burr grinder for my French Press and have finally achieved the consistent coarse grind I've been looking for. Depending on what your needs are, this grinder may or may not meet your needs.
OK for the price, not a lifetime appliance, should hold up better than it is.
January 10, 2015
I've had this for just about a year. I use it about every 4 or 5 days, grinding about 3 caps of bean each time., so it's run maybe 200 times. It was fine for the first 7-8 months. As some have mentioned, the grounds were not completely uniform at first, but I discovered that if I gave it a bit of a shake once or twice during grinding, it helped immensely. I think some of the beans got stuck at either the top (out of the blade) or at the bottom(ground the heck out of them) if I didn't shake or tip it. No problem at any settings, made some fine for espresso, some coarse for a press, but mostly on drip. However, while grinding one batch of beans which seemed to be oilier than normal, the motor had problems grinding, seemed to be straining to keep turning at speed. Maybe the oily beans were more resistance than dry beans, and the motor was barely strong enough? Since then, it make some odd noises and sounds like it doesn't spin uniformly (like grinding a clutch noise maybe) and the grounds are noticeably less uniform. For a shade over $20, I didn't expect a lifetime appliance, but I did expect it to hold up better than this after 200 uses or so. I see that there is supposedly a newer version out, although it says "currently unavailable" on the Amazon site. It looks like an identical machine with a new shape & color for the base. Could be a cosmetic change, or maybe they did something to beef up the motor? I hope so....

Ok if you're only using it for coffee, I guess
October 14, 2017
If your intent is to grind your daily Joe this one will work just fine. It packs a punch, strong enough to grind dried cinnamon sticks to dust in almost no time. It has even tackled hard-as-a-rock dried ginseng root with determination. But I am using it to grind herbs, and there are drawbacks.1. The lid does not fit tightly against the canister. When doing long grinds for harder herbs a lot of dust accumulates between the lid and the canister, and even escapes. When small amounts of herbs are weighed before grinding this translates to an unacceptable loss, throwing off formulas.2. There are gaps in the construction which allow herb dust to lodge itself into cracks and crevices, making it difficult to get out. I usually have to hit it with a paint brush to sweep it out.3. I recently threw some sugar into the grinder to powder it. The white sugar "liberated" a large accumulation of darker herbs that had been lodged under the grinding blade. Not knowing what I had in there, I had to throw away 1/4 cup of sugar and start again.I suppose if I were only using it for coffee these drawbacks would be fine--coffee doesn't need a long grind time, and if you're not using it for anything else then perhaps it's ok to have debris left in the mechanism, assuming it would rotate through and be relatively fresh. But this is not a good choice for an herbalist or for a cook who wants to grind their kitchen herbs.
Meh

Will this grind spices and coffee? Yeah...But that is as far as it goes in terms of being a "good" product. I bought this to replace my much cheaper Mr. Coffee brand grinder, which had nothing wrong with it. I thought this one would be better. The kitchen aid grinder is much louder, does not grind the beans all the way, and you need a spoon to get the grounds out. Even if I grind a minimal amount, I still have the same issues. I was very disappointed. It looks nice and kind of does the job.

This thing is highly overrated. In order to get all the whole beans ground up (even coarsely) you need to run it until the bottom half of the coffee is packed into the bottom of the cup and difficult to remove. Thankfully the cup is removable, or this shortcoming would convince me to return it. I have owned several inexpensive KRUPS grinders that outperform this thing at a third of the price.

Not impressed with this product. I like the removable grinding cup and the grinding capability of the unit. The downside is the MESS created after grinding. You'd think it would all stay in the cup...NOPE! Once you remove the clear plastic lid, particles escape to the perimeter of the grinding cup and its lid, thus falling into the base unit which is really hard to clean. Basically, it's poor product design. I figure a seal or O-ring could help prevent the escape of particles. I'm very meticulous about keeping my grinder clean as it promotes longevity. Not so sure about this unit's chances for long term life. I expected better quality from a Kitchen Aid product. Unfortunately, there weren't many alternatives available on Amazon.
A sufficient value option.
June 19, 2017
This does not come with settings for grind options...you press the cap down to get it to blend. Fortunately, it has a manual on how many seconds to hold the cap down for to get the grinds to a particularly fineness. I also have to swirl my finger around the blade to get the grounds out from underneath it. It grinds sufficiently, and has a removable cup so you don't need to flip it over and scoop grounds from the lid. I definitely preferred the settings option on my last grinder at the same price-point, but could not find it on Amazon anymore.
Serviceable
August 31, 2016
This grinder is rather heavy and bulky compared to other countertop grinders I've used. I do like the detachable grinding cup, so you don't have to tip the whole grinder over and smack the bottom to get the coffee out. On the other hand, the ground coffee packs really tightly under the blades and you need to use your fingertip or a knife or spoon to dig it out every single time. The power cord is also inconveniently short. I hope the weight, bulk, and steel construction translates to durability, but I've only been using it a few months, so I can't speak to that.

It's great when it works.
August 30, 2017
I'm not sure if I received a bad unit but frequently it will not work. The clear lid also acts as a safety mechanism and when placed on the unit you have to twist the lid so it will lock in place. There is only one way to do this and I'm not doing it wrong. However frequently the unit will not grind and I have to fiddle with the unit lid to get it to grind. Frustrating to say the least especially when you need that cup of coffee.
Best Grinder... Until it Broke just after warranty ended
October 30, 2016
This grinder was amazing for just over a year. I loved how it ground the beans (with adjustable grinding levels) and that you could press a button to start it and walk away. You don't need to hold a button down the whole time you grind. The problem is that the plastic holding the blade in broke after we owned it for a little over a year. I tried to get a replacement, but the warranty had expired. We had a juicer, made by the same company, that broke in the exact same way. I will never purchase an item from this company that has a spinning mechanism. They seem to have the exact same poor quality. If you want to buy a new grinder every year or so, this is the grinder for you. When it works, it works very well.
Loved it at first, then it quit on me!
October 5, 2016
I really liked this item when I first got it, but it only lasted a little over a year and then it went caput without warning. It took longer than the Krups I bought to replace it as well. I am disappointed in this product since I was recommending it to everyone, then replacing it all too soon. I have never had a coffee grinder just quit like that! (I have several homes I put grinders in, so I have a lot of experience with them.)
2 months and broken!
February 9, 2016
I purchased this item 2 months ago and already a piece of the plastic on the lid has chipped off making the grinder useless. Without the lid closing properly the grinder will not turn on. I'm really disappointed in this product. Worked great when things weren't falling apart!
Nor can it produce coarser or finer grain in even size
November 29, 2015
I have bought it and used it for a couple months. Originally, I was surprised that the ground level of grinder can be adjusted at its price. However, after using that for a while. The so called "different level of grinding" is nothing but grinding longer or shorter. It can't even grind coffee beans thoroughly and evenly. Nor can it produce coarser or finer grain in even size. After grinding for a long time, there is still coarse grain in the grinder. Considering it price, the grinder is fair for those who only need a grinder to grind their coffee beans and do not care the grinding quality. However, if you are considering to buy this grinder for its adjustable settings on grinding size, you could think twice. The machine might not work as what you expected.
On my second one after 3 grinds
October 1, 2013
I originally ordered this grinder on Sept. 11 and received it on Sept. 14. At that time I did not have any whole beans to grind so I purchased a bag. I used this grinder 3 times before it just quit working!!!! I read in a previous review about taking it apart and cleaning the connections but that is ridiculous when it was basically brand new.Amazon was very good about replacing it. I received it today Oct 1.I came back online to see if that have a small appliance warranty for it but, in fact, they do not. Now I'm really skeptical.I gave it 2 stars because I like that you can set the different grinds and it does so automatically after you press the button. I live alone so I normally only make a half of a pot at a time but I grind the coffee for 2 days instead of doing it daily. Size wise for the amount of coffee I grind it works well. The star rating system says I don't like it based on the number of stars. Actually I do like the concept but I'm just not sure of how reliable it is going to be. Really, 3 times and it quits!! Unacceptable.I may grind the entire bag of coffee I have now just to make sure it keeps working. Kind of defeats the purpose but it would be a good test. For those reading this that are skeptical, I made sure both the bottom and top were locked in position. It did not overheat the motor because the 3 grinds were on different days.I really hope this one holds up. I like the features on it.Good luck, hope you get it good one.I'll update as to whether or not I have problems with my replacement.

Full-a-beans!!
August 10, 2017
Very disappointing! Sure it is nice to look at but its grinding capability is very poor. I think this is due to the depth of the basket and the weaker motor or a combination thereof. I like to grind my coffee very fine - a near powder consistency. This grinder seems unable to do this even at half capacity. A portion of beans are ground finely then stick to the bottom, while most of the beans above it are ground coarsely. I've had to dump out the coarsely ground beans, then scrape out the powdery grounds off the bottom of the canister then put the coarser grind back in for round two. Most definitely NOT the grinder for morning coffeeholics (me) who are need of a quick fix as soon as they get up! I'll be getting another grinder.
I had a KitchenAid coffee grinder that I loved until I wore out the motor
May 24, 2017
I had a KitchenAid coffee grinder that I loved until I wore out the motor. This model is meant to be the replacement for it. It looks a bit different but is basically the exact same model except for one crucial difference: the shape is narrower and taller--making the capacity is the same--but that narrowness makes way the coffee "flows" over the blades VERY much less efficient. I'm always left with coffee stuck between the blades and the bottom and the coffee on top ends up being much coarser than the coffee stuck in the bottom. If they'd just kept the same bowl everything would be great.BTW, one nice thing about KitchenAid and Krupps, Braun, etc. was the removable bowl/blade assembly. You could wash it--what a concept. That's still true.
This machine doesn't exactly grind all of your beans evenly ...
May 23, 2017
This machine doesn't exactly grind all of your beans evenly. Even when I do as little as 4 cups, I have to stop after a few seconds & scrape the finely ground coffee from under the blade & mix it with the rest of the beans which are still very coarse. I never have gotten all of the beans to grind uniformly. It gets the job done I suppose, hence the second star. I would not purchase again.
Messy & Wasteful
April 10, 2017
This gets one extra star for the fact that yes, it grinds well-being makes very fine grounds.Low rating due to the fact that since it's such a fine dust, a TON comes out from the sides and makes a mess all over the place. Also gets stuck to the sides and the lids and is very difficult to remove-end up losing a lot of what you grind. Makes a huge mess while taking the lid off as well.I would have returned this... But it's not worth $9 to ship it back!
Coffee Grinder - Disappointing
January 26, 2017
Re: KitchenAid BCG111OB Blade Coffee GrinderI returned this item for the following reasons:1. The ground coffee does not have a consistent grind with some larger pieces intermingled with smaller.2. The unit is activated by pushing down on the top cover. In my opinion it takes too much pressure held for the duration of the grinding operation to be comfortable or convenient.3. There is no gasket on either the top cover or the unit where the top cover seats. There is therefore a tendency to have some spillage.4. I am a woman with averaged sized hands. Grasping the unit with one hand to pour out the contents is difficult because the diameter is too large. The surface tends to be slippery even given the brushed finish, and there are no convenient places to grip the unit. Given the balance of the unit with the motor weight at the bottom, pouring with one hand is difficult.5. The top of the unit is milled and smooth, but very thin making it moderately but annoyingly sharp when one cleans the unit after each use.I bought this unit because of its high customer rating and brand identity. I have had very satisfactory products made by KitchenAid. However, in my opinion this unit is not particularly user friendly or effective.
Don't judge this book by its attractive cover
July 16, 2016
Was looking to update my old grinder of 10 years with this stylish looking one. It does look great, but that is where it stops in terms of being a better unit. As noted in other reviews, you have to hold down the top quite forcefully during the entire grinding process and even then, there is coffee dust that is escaping out of the cup and ready to make a mess once you remove the clear top. My old grinder has a twist-locking clear cover that does not need to be held down in order to grind, keeps coffee in the metal grinding cup and even has a slider to select how long you wish to grind. Such a better product...but not pleasant to look at. The new KitchenAid will sit out for looks, but not for use.

Died within 2 months, apparently not uncommon
June 7, 2017
If I had written this review shortly after I got this grinder it would have had 4 or 5 stars, but after 2 months, it completely stopped working. I contacted the seller through Amazon, and they would not cover it after one month. Other reviews on the Hamilton Beach site also complain of the grinder biting the dust after a short time. We took it apart and found that some of the parts connected to the tab that lets the grinder know the top is locked on were made of plastic and were melted!
Stopped working
May 18, 2017
This worked well for ~8 months. Then it just stopped working. Won't turn on. Nothing.Called company. They said it's still under warranty, so they can send me a new one, but I am responsible for paying for shipping (which is almost the same price as buying a new one).Garbage.
Stopped working within 8 months.
June 6, 2016
I bought this in November 2015, so about 7-8 months ago, and it just suddenly stopped working. It was used maybe once a week on average for coffee beans (never anything else), it was cleaned properly, and it was never dropped/mishandled that might break something. It worked one day and the next it just didn't. I tried taking out and putting back the grinding cup and the lid to ensure they were in the correct locked position. I tried multiple electrical outlets. I tried with different quantities of coffee beans, and empty. Still no luck, the blades just don't turn, the motor doesn't engage. So frustrating. It was fine while it was working, and I don't expect something like this to last forever, but at least a couple years seems reasonable.I'm so not looking forward to wasting time dealing with the 1-800 number and dealing with customer service and all the warranty issues.
dangerous safety flaw
November 2, 2015
Loved it till tonight when I discovered a major safety issue. The grinder started and accidentally tipped over on the counter. The lid popped off and to my surprise the blade just kept spinning and shooting coffee beans everywhere. I could not reach the outlet to unplug it and I was afraid to grab it, so I had to wait for its cycle to finish.
Works for a very short time as described.
September 19, 2014
I've had this grinder for 6-12 months now and I really liked it at first. However, I can no longer say I would recommend this to anyone who grinds coffee on a daily basis. The removable cup is now fused (melted?) to the the metal part that turns the blade. It still works but the cup no longer comes out which defeats the whole purpose of why I purchased this model. I use anything from a french press, aeropress, moka pot, to pour over. I now have to use a funnel to make sure more coffee grounds go into the device I am using and not all over the counter.Buyer beware with this one.**Update** 1/1/16Grinder still works but the timer does not. It is now a manual "guess" as to how long I think amount of beans I added need to be grinded for and the plastic part (cup) sitill does not separate no matter what I do. I tried many things to unscrew it but no luck so I still have to use the funnel from the Aeropress I bought unrelated to this item. It really irks me that I have to go through all the trouble. Go for a different coffee grinder as you will only resent this purchase.
New experience for me
April 23, 2014
I've never had a product from any manufacturer quit in 30 days, but that's exactly what happened with this HB coffee grinder..it was ok while it worked..it's not even worth the trouble to return it...beware!Update:I threw this grinder out and bought the Krups from Amazon.I like its power, but it's too early to comment on reliability. One thing though, getting the coffee grinds out of the grinder and into the coffee maker is a hastle(as is cleanup) as the Krups does not have a removable cup for the ground coffee...you can't win!

I'm not at all happy with this product
May 25, 2017
I'm not at all happy with this product. I owned a Braun coffee grinder which did such a great job and lasted for over 10 years, can't find it anymore. First of all this doesn't grind very fine as I would like. Secondly, the design is very bad that a lot of stuff that you are grinding pops up from the top to the side and spills out. Only good thing about this is that it looks cute.
Kitchenaid BCG11OB Blade Coffee Grinder Just Doesn't Make The Grade-- Weakest Motor Ever and Super Messy Our Grade D-!
May 2, 2017
Our review of the KABCG111OB Blade Coffee Grinder in short (my old review was accidentally deleted -so sorry for any duplicate posts)I have used the Krups one Touch Coffee and Spice Grinder for years with much success, but when I saw the Kitchenaid grinder had a slightly larger containment area, and based on the great reviews I thought I would give it a shot--Pros and ConsCons1- Poor grinding capacity or/and Very weak motor (a serious deal-breaker for any type of grinder)!2- Difficult to operate-- The push down top feature seems easy, but it required quire a bit of force/body weight to operate.3- Limited color choices - this one says onyx, but is more like a metallic chrome to pewter. Pros1- Looks great-- Looks good on the counter top and with other appliances!2- Competitively priced. This model costs the same as the Krups One Touch which I have also owned.---------------Okay, so, now I know why it's so important to read the negative reviews for any product you are considering and don't just believe the hype as all of those fantastic reviews as they may be greatly exaggerated! -- as was the case, here--So, while I absolutely loved the sleek look of the unit and also the fact that it did appear allow for more volume,in terms of actual function of use and grinding quality/capability--- not so much (sigh). And unfortunately, the first thing I noticed was how weak the motor was and the poor grinding--I don't know if i had a defective unit or not but it took way too long to work (about 2-3times longer to grind the same amounts that my old Krups could do in significantly less time)...And the push down top mechanism required a significant amount of force-- (although the lady in the commercial was using one hand, but she must be very very strong as I had to use actual body weight) to get it to work-- so it was not very practical and difficult to use.And this was with very gentle testing:The first thing I did was test it with simple items, making powdered sugar-- it took a bit longer, but workedand then I tried grinding graham crackers for crust-- after grinding for what seemed like forever, I sifted to blend andwhat the KA grinder actually did grind was okay, but the machine left large un-ground chunks (about the size of a pea) this is quality of grind- problem that I have never experienced with my Krups, ever even when I cracked the lid--It should be duly noted that I always pre-crush any rice, chickpea or other beans in a high speed blender to break up into coarse powder, and also pre-crumble crackers or cookies with a rolling pin before grinding to make it easier on the smaller units (and also to prevent the harder beans from cracking/damaging the grinder cover as my chickpeas have done in the past) to make a fine powder or gluten-free flour mix -- and did the same here..And cleaning the unit was a nightmare, somehow the powder was in the bottom near the turning mechanism which can't be rinsed like the cup and capacity cup holder, so despite wiping and wiping for 20minutes prepping the unit (for return to Amazon)-- there are still little crumbs that won't come out of the base-- I know all grinders are a bit messy to clean. but this was beyond tedious and ridiculous..- sighAnd while I love KA products in general, but unfortunately, unlike the KA Stand Mixer K45SS, and Artisan-- this item did NOT meet even basic expectations of quality of use (with even lightweight grinding), so I was too afraid to try our any coffee beans, it wasn't worth the risk at that point. needless to say I will be exchanging this unit for a new Krups One touch Coffee/Herb Grinder in black. After trying out the new KA grinder, I found that my old Krups One Touch (which was super old and broken, btw) was stilla much better, stronger, faster, consistent option for such needs. So I will be going back to what works- Krups One Touch.Overall the KA grinder is very pretty to look at, but in terms of actual quality of use and functionality--unfortunately, the new Kitchenaid Blade Coffee Grinder just doesn't make the grade. They really dropped the ball on this one.Our Grade: D-; or just under 1Star!

It won't grind the coffee beans to a powder form. Coffee grinds comes out very gritty. The coffee grind keeps getting stuck on the bottom.
Not a good grinder
August 23, 2016
Can't tell how finely the coffee is ground, grounds clump, hard to see measurement marks, and difficult put top in the right location to do grinding.
Junk
September 16, 2015
Worked really well for 4 months then suddenly would no longer turn on or do anything. We used it once a day to grind coffee for 2 people and left it sitting on the counter. That's all it had to do and it couldn't hold up. Thought we we were getting a good one. Very disappointed.
We had a Cuisinart blade grinder that worked wonderfully - less noisy
June 11, 2015
Don't buy this grinder. It's loud. It takes a long time to grind. The quality is low. Even the button is hard to press. We had a Cuisinart blade grinder that worked wonderfully - less noisy, shorter grind time, wider bowl, easier to grind. But I knocked the lid off and it broke. Replaced it with the KitchenAid because I thought it may be better, and I was way wrong. Wish we had the Cuisinart back.
