I like it well grate costumer support OK update time I have had mine for some time now and I wood not trade it for any other brand Iv seen so fare that's near this price range parts are easy and cheep to get free shipping from X-Tronics USA in Lincoln NE cents my first purchase I have ordered a seconded iron assembly witch I have a big chisel tip on for heavy soldering and use it for a back up for my main iron in case I have to change out a heating element in it and a seconded magnifier lamp I have replaced the bases on both lamps to spring loaded clamps which are far more stable and can be used anywhere I chose from clamping on my benches edge or on the device I'm repairing some times I clamp 1 next to my drill press for drilling precise holes circuit boards

June 29, 2016
I use this setup several times a week. The tips are good quality and if you clean them with every use they will last a very long time. Comes with a spare heater element but I haven't needed to swap out the element yet. The iron heats up quickly to a max of 896 degrees F. The only complaint I have is I wish the power switch was on the front or the top rather than the side, it makes it a bit difficult to switch on and off as I have a cramped bench. I use mine for RC and Arduino projects, so I'm working with large power wires and small signal wires and it works great on everything. I use the light a lot, it's very useful with the magnifier. This is an excellent value.

For accessories, I have purchased MG Chemicals liquid flux, needle-tip flux bottle, MG Chem desoldering braid, a generic solder pump, a wire tip-cleaner, and a Panavise.
Excellent Product and "WOW" Service
January 22, 2013
I purchased my 4010-XTS the beginning of October 2012. I have only recently used the soldering station and I was very impressed. It heats quickly and holds at the temperature I set it to. I've never had a soldering station before, but I've owned a couple of soldering irons. There is no comparison. This is so much better. Plus it come with 10 different tips including the one on the iron. How good a deal is that? Needless to say, I'm very pleased.

Here's the best part of my story.
Even though I only just recently used my soldering station I have used the magnifying lamp several times. I don't know that much about electronics, so to help myself learn I purchased a Radio Shack Electronics Learning Lab. The magnifying lamp has been really useful for identifying resistors and reading the tiny print on capacitors, etc.

Accidentally I left the lamp on over night and somehow that caused the fluorescent bulb or the electronic ballast to get weak causing the light to barely glow. Hoping it was just the bulb I took the lamp apart to see what the wattage was. It wasn't marked so I called X-Tronics to find out. I spoke to someone named Jim who was as nice and friendly as one could wish. I told him how happy I was with the soldering station and that my lamp had quit working and that I was simply calling to find out about the light bulb. He apologized for the problem and said they would send an entire new lamp out to me free of charge. He took my mailing information and that was that. He never asked how old it was or anything.

That's what I meant in my title about "WOW" service! How could I not immediately get this review done. I definitely recommend this company.
Great for the price!
February 25, 2012
I just bought my second one of the these. For the price you can't beat it. I'm a tech with 30 years experience and do a lot of soldering work and rework. At my job we use Hakko FX951 soldering stations which are pretty much a professional standard but they are pricey ($225) and I wanted something for home that was comparable in usefulness without the high cost.

If you do much soldering then you know that regular pencil irons take forever to heat up, do not hold their heat well - especially when doing heavier work like soldering 12 gauge wire to lugs, etc, - and one temperature does not fit all jobs. You need lower temperatures for fine work/rework on board components and higher temperatures for heavier wires and components.

The X-Tronic 4000 is an excellent tool for the cost and is quite comparable to the Hakko FX951 in most regards. It heats up even to the highest temperature settings very quickly (about 30 seconds or so) and in use it holds it's heat constant to within a few degrees of it's setting.

The only features which it lacks, compared to the Hakko, and which is also why it costs so much less, are,

1: The X-Tronic does not have hot-swappable tips. The Hakko has insulated tip holders so that you can instantly swap tips by hand without having to wait for them to cool down first or use any tools. On my job I need to keep switching between a variety of tips so this feature is a must, but at home I typically am only using the iron for the single whatever task at hand, like repairing headphone wires that the dog chewed into, or assembling a kit. So I put whatever tip I need to use on the iron first, and then if I do need to swap tips without waiting for cool down then I can live with the inconvenience of using pliers to handle the hot tip.

2: The X-Tronic has no "sleep mode." The Hakko, and other expensive stations, have a switch or sensor that detects when the iron is placed back into it's holder or isn't in use, and puts the tip into an idle/low temperature state from which it can heat up very swiftly when you pick it up for use again. This is not only a safety feature which reduces the risk of burns but also saves on electricity and extends the life of the tip. But again, at home, I'm not using the iron all day long, and I put it back into the holder when not in my hand, so it's not a big deal.

3: A: The temperature display on the X-Tronic is in Celsius rather than Fahrenheit degrees, so if you aren't accustomed to this just note that a typical low temperature of 700 degrees F is about 371 C and a high of 840 F is about 449 C, and mark the corresponding spots on the dial with a Sharpie or something. B: The X-Tronic's rotary dial for setting the temperature is a bit coarse, meaning that getting it EXACTLY to 385.2 may be problematic, but really, the difference between, say, 384 and 386 degrees is of no practical consequence to any normal application of this tool.

A few other notes and observations:
The X-Tronic comes with a good variety of tips from fine conical points to wider rounded and flat chisel tips suitable to many applications. The sponge provided for wiping tips clean isn't a perfect fit for it's place in the holder, at least with the one that came with mine. But serious solderers use the Hakko or similar wire type sponges which you can get for around $10 instead anyway, and the X-Tronic's sponge holder is a handy place to keep the little ziplock bag containing all the tips. The construction of the X-Tronic is sturdy. I've dropped the iron and knocked the whole thing - base and holder - onto the tile floor a couple of times with no harm to it. The iron's cord is flexible and heat resistant enough. The customer service and warranty when you get this through Amazon's seller is excellent according to all the reviews. (I haven't had any problems with mine so I'm trusting other people's reviews on this.)

So in conclusion, the X-Tronic 4000 is a great choice for anyone who wants a serious, rugged, and professional quality soldering station for general use without spending three times or more on a top of the line name brand model intended for heavy duty industrial use loaded with every possible feature.
Review X-Tronic 4010 digital soldering station
July 20, 2011
I bought this soldering station to replace a standard soldering iron. I have never owned a soldering station before .

The unit was shipped quickly and arrived well packaged. It comes with a wide array tips and even in extra heating element. The unit appears very well made. The cord going from the base unit to the soldering unit is long enough and very flexible so it's comfortable and use. There is a knob on the front to set the temperature and a digital display that shows the tip temperature in degrees centigrade. When the station is turned on, the numbers on the display rapidly increase until the set temperature is reached, so if the numbers aren't rising, the tip is hot. This makes the centigrade display useful even for those used to farenheit. It also comes with a holder and a sponge for tip cleaning.

In use the soldering station is great. It heats very quickly, I wondered exactly how quickly so today I timed it. From the time I turned on the switch to the tip melting solder was 37 seconds. Thus far I've only used the pointed tip to solder fine wires to a circuit board. It went well, the station works well and is comfortable to use. I'm glad I bought this and I don't see myself returning to the old soldering irons.
The Mercantile Station support is excellent. The first unit I received worked but the display only showed the "C", no numbers. It was replaced immediately, no questions, no hassles, just immediate replacement, with an apology. It turns out they've sold 4 thousand of these with only 4 defective units. My experience with The Mercantile Station couldn't have been more positive.

Nice little soldering kit
December 15, 2016
This has been a fantastic kit for all soldering purposes -- the only thing I can really gripe about is that the lamp isn't really of much use on its own, but I don't think it was intended to be used as such anyway, with the giant magnifying glass built in. Having a regulated temperature setting (with display) is really nice and I still have not yet needed the replacement element, but I'm also not a particularly heavy user.
It's held up wonderfully and does what I've asked
April 23, 2015
I've been using this solder station for over a year now. I do mostly tube amplifier repair and building with it. It's held up wonderfully and does what I've asked.

Two cons though - first, the grip area has a tendency to get hot. Like really hot. Especially if using the iron for a while or in an odd position. Second - the magnifying light is a big piece of crap. it worked for about five seconds and has never worked again. I wonder if the company puts it in as your "first repair project". I dinged the package a star for these two things, but I would happily buy this again. I've got many, many hours on this station with no problems and less money invested than a good weller.
Great little soldering iron set for the price
December 6, 2014
Great little soldering iron set for the price. overall, you could get better, but in this price range I think it is a deal. It heats up quick, and solders flawlessly. seems well enough built, no major gripes. the only thing that was weird with mine is the knob to adjust temperature was not completely straight so it rubbed the box on one side when turned, easily fixed though by pulling it off just slightly to add space! Beyond that, no gripes with the actual iron, now, the magnifying light is a piece of garbage. (probably a good thing, means more money went into the soldering iron) I was using it a few days ago and the thing started smoking at the base. needless to say, I wont use it anymore as a lit magnifier.
Good package and price
March 3, 2013
Quick shipment. Tried to replace the tip and broke the heating element putting the tip on. Turns out the inside of the tip, had a lip I guess where it joins
and this prevented it from sliding on. Replacing the element was quite simple. I ordered a pack of elements from their site and it arrived promptly. Would have
been nice to receive a notice of the shipment.

Messed around with the iron for a few seconds to make sure it works. Pity I could not use it for a preamp kit I was building - did not want to mess with this
whilst i had a project underway.

Magnified light is a nice add-on and has helped me identify bad solder joints - only wish it had better magnification, but still good for price.

Array of tips are sure to please....BUT watch out for those tips that have not been assembled properly.
Excellent customer service
October 17, 2012
I got mine broken out of the padded carton box.
It seems that it was sent broken.
Lamp looked like a used one right out of box.

Update: October 31, 2012
Saying all this, I had experienced outstanding customer service that contacted me in a day sending me new items even without forcing me to send back defective items.
New items arrived perfectly and work fine.
Will update.

Medium duty hobby tool.

Not bad, worked solidly for about 4 years. Had to replace the heater. Eventually the handle nut cracked rendering it unusable. Iron stand is nice and stable. Adequate for moderate use. Lamp is garbage out of the box. Price seems fair.

Light failed on first use. Accessories provided are worthless, but actual soldiering iron works well for price.
Its decent.
November 16, 2014
The manufacturing/components/materials feel cheap. The tips and accessories are nice, however, the lamp base connection is a poor design and broke before/during first use. It will have to be fixed/remounted, but the light, magnifying glass and even the goose-neck work fine! I wouldn't expect too much out of this, but it will do the job nevertheless.
Product OK
June 26, 2014
Lamp is too short to help much. Solder gun was good. Alot of extra tips. Liked the gun didn't like the Holster. Was poor fitting and broke the tip. Problem was my solder gun was broke so I had to get a different one to repair.
It is working at least
February 2, 2014
It is working. However, the temperature might not be correct - if I set at 250, the solder could not melt 225 degree stuff. I had to set temperature 30 degrees higher but I am not sure what is exactly the temperature any more.

Not the best.
June 19, 2016
I would have rated it better, but the tips that came with it ruined one of the heating elements that it had. After replacing the heating element it didn't heat up properly. I assumed I put the heating element and tip together improperly but after disassembling it and reassembling it again it started to overhead the plastic and ruined the whole plug of the unit.
Dangerous Solder Station For Components!
March 23, 2016
This station started out working well. It heats up very quickly and functions decently with the exception of one problem. After a few months of usage, it has begun applying voltage to anything that comes in contact with the tip and has begun blowing up sensitive devices such as microchips and led's. Not a recommended buy.
SHORT LIFE - CONSIDER IT A DISPOSABLE ITEM
March 21, 2016
Good when new, but they don't last LONG! I use mine about once a month for a couple of hours at a time. It lasted just long enough to get past the warranty period. I won't be buying another one!!

I loved the instant heating, and it was good while it lasted, but consider it disposable.
Save your money buy a good one.
September 10, 2015
I've had this soldering iron for almost two years. When I first got I loved it but more recently I've wanted to smash it. If your using 60/40 you should be ok but lead free forget it you'll fight it the whole way. I use bernzomatic electrical solder which I will be changing to something different once it's gone. The handle is junk if you put any pressure on it it comes apart at the base of the handle my fix was plumbers tape it works ok now. I just got a 936 hakko and it's world's better.
Yeah, just don't
August 5, 2014
I don't know if maybe just the one I received is defective since I've had numerous problems with it. The handgrip portion gets hot after a while even at 75%. The heating element doesn't seem to be spaced right and doesn't seat right within the tube under the hot tip. Both heating elements stopped heating to the expected max hours after use. I can barely reheat a soldered component hot enough to remove it from a board. the tip just doesn't get hot enough due to before mentioned problem where the hot end doesn't get hot enough. I really should have become aware of it sooner but this is my first bench soldering iron and definitely the last x-tronic.

After purchasing & replacing removable pencil iron, the unit works as advertised. The heating element was bad.
June 10, 2015
I bought this item in December of 2013, I used it recently on a kit and got erratic temperature readings and then a code S-E or 5-E. I should have tried it out when I bought it. The item only had a 1 year warranty. Buy with caution.
** DON"T BUY THIS PRODUCT** Burned out!
May 24, 2015
** DON"T BUY THIS PRODUCT***Bought this in Dec 21013 and haven't had a need to use it yet until now. Went to use it and it burned out before it even got hot enough to do anything. It smells bad (at the base) and gave an error message of E5.It looks like a great kit, but its deceiving. Now its past the warranty to return it. I thought I was buying a decent product since there are plenty of good reviews, but all the 1 star reviews are right on the money and know I have the same issues. SUPER BUMMED OUT. I will never order from this company again.

February 1, 2015
This thing is not worth the money. Out of the box the iron felt like a flimsy piece of plastic and the screw on tip flexed with pressure?! After heating up I don't think the temperature gauge was correct because it was not able to melt solder that should have been easy. The solder wand holder is a piece of cheap junk and flops around with no weight or stability. The magnifying glass is a cheap piece of scratched plastic and basically unusable for magnification. The replacement tips seemed ok but most of them are useless since the tips are too small to properly transfer heat. There is no reason EVER to buy this thing over a comparable Hakko in its price range. Which is exactly what I did and the Hakko is a dream.
Unit was Doa on arrival
May 22, 2014
The unit was dead on arrival, didnt heat up and I was charged 17.90 restocking fee for sending it back . I will never order from these people again. U suck
Would not buy again
March 26, 2014
I've had it for 6 months. Worked great until it didn't. Called customer service, they said to replace the heating element--the one that has to be soldered to replace. So I bought a cheap iron at Walmart tried my best to replace the element on the circuit board (off which I have no experience working on, I work on guitars). Replaced it, still didn't work, it's $15 to send to them, plus shipping to get it there. Between the hassle & cost of shipping it, possible having to buy and replace the heating element again is 6 months, I'm already close to half the cost of a new Weller. And that is where my money is going to go. But, not until the Walmart unit dies. I swear it worked as well for my applications as the Xtronic did, only not as comfortable to hold and it doesn't have changeable tips -- however, when the $10 iron dies, I won't be nearly as upset as throwing $90 down the hole for Xtronic.
