Five Star Reviews: | 71% Digging for gold. August 26, 2017 Appears to be a quality item. I have a Fiskars manual spring-loaded lawn trimmer I have been happy with for the tight spots. I also have a Fiskars trimming board, and a Fiskars Scissors. To date, I have been quite pleased with their products. I intend to add this to my metal detecting tool backpack. Perfect for scooping potting mixes August 25, 2017 Where has this little scoop been all my life?! Sometimes a hand trowel just isn't the right tool when you're transplanting, but this is the right one. It's better than using a small pot or cup, and better than using a trowel to scoop potting mixes or other materials. If you do a lot of container gardening, you'll love this. Great for hiking and camping! June 27, 2017 This a great backpacking trowel. It's very light and extremely strong. I see a few reviewers say their broke with light use and I can't wrap my mind around that. I had a big stack of heavy cardboard boxes and before I broke them down I decided to test this shovel on them, so I started stabbing them. I jabbed at least fifty holes through several layers of heavy boxes, including some I had to hammer through. In addition to that I've dug up roots and dug holes in rocky soil with no issues. I'm not sure what it would take to break one of these, although perhaps in very cold weather the plastic might get more brittle. Buy More! June 2, 2017 Really good scoop. Wish I bought more than 2. For soil, peat moss, fertilizer, pea gravel, etc...I ilusually use an old plastic dish for these things. This scoop is very nice in your hand, scoops and empties nicely. Very hearty grade of plastic. If you are a gardener YOU NEED THESE April 9, 2017 I needed new trowels as the old ones cannot be found (don't ask). This shape was appealing as our soil is clay and gets really hard to break through. Needn't have worried with these trowels. They break the soil so easily and also make removing weeks a snap. Plus you have the Fiskars brand means you know they will last. Thoroughly happy with this purchase and would recommend to anyone. No complaints at all! March 29, 2016 Just like all of my other Fiskars items, these cultivators are the same quality I have come to expect from this company. I love that they are composite material. This means that they won't rust or rot and will last for years to come. I don't know how many times I have gone to use my metal cultivators only for the tines to bend in our hard NC soil and then break off at the wooden handle. Unlike that junk, these are super lightweight but at the same time, extremely strong and durable. I own a Fiskars Axe and I was skeptical at first (since I knew them only as a scissor company) but that thing is a beast. This is why I decided to go ahead and buy their smaller items too. They are all awesome products (even the scissors LOL) | 47% You might think by looking at the picture that you ... April 29, 2017 You might think by looking at the picture that you simply insert the probes into the ground to get a reading but that's not how it works. You have dig up dirt, put it in a cup, do some other stuff, then insert the instrument into the cup of dirt. So why am I giving it 5 stars? My neighbor uses a lawn service and his lawn is much healthier than mine. I simply stuck the problems into the ground in my yard then compared the reading against my neighbor's yard it was clear that the instrument, even when not used as instructed, detected the healthier lawn. Easy to use, simple to read and provides quick results June 26, 2015 Very simple to use and provides quick results. I purchased this to test soil on different parts of my small farm, so I could amend the soil as necessary for planting. I was so surprised how easy this was to use. I carried around some disposable plastic cups, added soil and a little water just to dampen and consolidate the soil, stuck the prongs in, and had readings within seconds. Then I simple rinsed the prongs off and went on to test the next samples. I even sometimes simply just stuck the prongs directly into the soil, which still gave me decent readings, but I do think it is better to dampen the soil in a cup or container, so you have the most accurate sampling. But, this is a great tool for gardeners or farmers. It is so easy to use and there are no batteries to worry about. Try this if you think your meter isn't working correctly May 7, 2015 After first two test measured 7.0, and having read reviews stating the meter always reads 7.0 regardless of actual pH, I decided to conduct a test. Taking soil from one of the previously measured locations, I then added 1 tablespoon vinegar to the soil, moistened the soil with water as instructed, mixed, and tested. Meter measured 6.5. Conducted a fourth test, added 2 tablespoons vinegar to the soil, moistened, mixed, and the meter measured 5.8. So my meter works. If others are skeptical or worried their meter is broke or not working correctly, you might want to try what I did before you return yours for refund or replacement. Awesome purchase if you read the instructions. September 6, 2014 ALERT: Read the instructions before trying to stick the probes into the ground.1. Clear instructions stating to put some dirt into a container, add distilled water and read the PH that way instead of trying to stick the very thin probes into the hard ground. They will break.2. Clean the probes every time you use them.3. Wait a full minute before taking a reading, the meter will peg into a direction, then back to center, then it will begin to move in the direction of the PH reading. It Works August 7, 2014 Right out of the package it works great!I was interested to find out why my zoysia grass was growing well in my backyard and not so well in my front yard.I stuck the probes in the ground after cleaning per instructions, the soil was moist and lo and behold a PH of 4.4-5 in the areas where the grass was growing poorly and a PH of 6,-6.5, -7 in the healthy areas. The deeper I probed the higher the acidity (as low as 4) as I started to slowly remove the probe, the PH would begin to increase to 5.5. then 6, so I could begin to see the topsoil was deeper in the backyard and shallow in most of the front yard.I will treat with lime this fall. I had suspected this was the problem. My house is only three years old so the sod was just laid three years ago. Easy to use and accurate. April 15, 2014 I have a battery powered soil analyzer, but it seems to go through batteries like nothing. I bought this one because of the low price and because it doesn't use batteries. Right out of the package it is ready to go and I went all around the yard, almost playing with my new toy! It read the same as my high-end analyzer but with no batteries ti worry about! I recommend this to everyone looking for an inexpensive and easy way to test the Ph of any soil! |
Four Star Reviews: | 14% Very sturdy since its formed as one piece September 20, 2017 Very sturdy since its formed as one piece. The tips are not very pointed so this is better for medium to larger projects. Anything small this might be too big. Handle Covered with Large, Difficult-to-Remove Sticker - Sturdy Design, Affordable August 13, 2017 This, like the trowel version, gets the job done for a good price. It's made of a sturdy material that holds up well to regular gardening tasks. However, please note that the handle comes covered in a large, branded sticker that is difficult to remove. Lightweight, works well, doesn't rust July 10, 2017 I like this tool. It would be nice if the blade was sharper, but in normal soil it works great. Bit shorter than expected June 12, 2017 The trowel portion was a bit shorter than expected, but otherwise Fiskars usual very good quality Well made May 2, 2017 A little to light weight for me but well made product. Im sure this will last for a long time to come Sturdy Scoop September 5, 2015 This is a nice sturdy scoop that has many potential uses inside and outside the house. Overall durability is better than most of the other products I have used for this purpose. The regular plastic ones usually break easily, and the metal ones most often corrode quickly when in contact with soil and rocks. The composite strikes a nice balance between the two, and this thing feels virtually indestructible. The size and shape of the scoop make it useful for measuring out fertilizers and other garden products. | 19% Nice tester June 21, 2017 Works very well for me and seems to be accurate. I just water the soil before testing. seems to work quite well, & without batteries, ... October 26, 2016 seems to work quite well, & without batteries, that's a real plus. Tested it on H2O, accurate ph 7.0, and on my lawn, which was twice previously tested to 4-5 ph, read about 5. So works well, i think, but gotta mix the soil with water to allow to work. Read directions, & don't break prongs by forcibly sticking them into hard earth. PH Meter January 14, 2016 This ph meter seems to work well for what I use it for, although it is cheaply made. Just be careful and you should be ok. It seems like there aren't really many options when it comes to this type of meter,, but this one is alright. Nice. Careful W/ Prongs Tho December 10, 2015 Works good, prongs are always tough to keep nice so be careful when testing. I will say to everyone here that is growing outdoors to till and amend your starting soil with dolomite lime which will automatically make the soil PH come back to neutral. The cup testing method works to some degree but most of the time its best to till, soften ,and test directly in the ground. The use of distilled water is questionable considering it usually has a lower than neutral PH, using a neutral 7.0 batch of water will have less influence on soil PH after being saturated.Indoors:You need to take the PH from the soil your roots are sitting in, take a top soil reading and if possible a root level reading as well.Taking soil out of a grow container to do a test will not give you a correct root soil PH and disturb your root progression, best to soften the soil in the pot first w/ neutral filtered water and test directly in container .Great product for the price :) 4 Stars Luster Leaf pH dual probe June 7, 2015 This is a quick and easy way to check the pH level of the soil in your garden or lawn areas. One minute is all it takes to get the results. |
Three Star Reviews: | 6% Ok. for softer ground. June 15, 2017 I suppose on fairly soft ground this will be ok. But on harder ground, like we have in the Mojave Desert, this doesn't hold a candle to a good steel trowel for example, in my case, when digging out weeds. Broke the first day.. I'm unsure if I ... May 14, 2017 Broke the first day.. I'm unsure if I was digging the worlds biggest root or if it's kinda flimsy .. went to Home Depot and bought a new one with a steel blade. I suppose it would work well if you simply used it for moving potting soil. Three Stars January 30, 2017 It snapped on me and I guess I was digging in a rocky place so partly my fault. good for the price, but doesn't last long May 22, 2016 I got the transplanter. It lasted 2 months, using it frequently, and leaving it outside most of the time. I really like that it didn't bend like the metal ones do. It probably would have lasted longer if I took better care of it. It did eventually break in half. Over all for the price, and how well it worked I am buying another one, hopefully this one will last longer. This will never rust. April 6, 2015 not very big as a scoop but slightly better than a trowel.Have reverted to using a clay pot to move potting soil into big pots. But I like the design and it handles well. If it had been bigger it would have been a real seller | 7% Easy to use but it's about a pionts off if ... September 15, 2016 Easy to use but it's about a pionts off if it's says 6.5 it's around a 5.5 ph if it says 7.5 it's at a 6.5 ph so it kinda works as a quicky for the price to get an idea but I still use my expensive ph tester for a more accurate reading Still wondering. April 24, 2016 I don't really know what to think about this PH probe, the operation seems quite simple but the results were (in my mind) questionable. |
Two Star Reviews: | 3% The blade is too thick to be sharp & so does not easily penetrate the soil like a metal one July 16, 2017 This is mostly my fault, as I didn't read the description completely before purchasing. I looked at the picture & the price & I needed one so I bought it. It is all plastic. The blade is too thick to be sharp & so does not easily penetrate the soil like a metal one. My mistake - but take my word & just don't buy this product. ... the small amount of gardening I've done but u fortunately after less than a year it broke June 25, 2017 Worked well for the small amount of gardening I've done but u fortunately after less than a year it broke. The tip of the shovel actually broke off. Like I said I rarely do any gardening with it so it didn't have heavy use. Two Stars February 28, 2017 Nice for only light work as the tip snapped after a few uses like many other reviews have stated. This is exactly what it is - a transplanter. ... February 26, 2017 This is exactly what it is - a transplanter. If you plan to use it for taking the soft soil from the bag and put it into a planter, there is a chance the product will remain in one piece. I tried to dig a hole in the garden, and a piece chipped off the first time I used it. It broke while digging January 23, 2017 On the third use, when scraping alongside a wall, the tip snapped off. It seemed to be of decent quality, but it couldn't hold up in Arizona. | 4% Below expectations August 26, 2015 This summer 90% of my garden tomatoes got bottom rot. Researched the prob online and learned there was a calcium deficiency--get garden lime. I did. Also ordered the PH meter to analyze future soils. I tested it in a new plant, then other plants. The meter stayed the same no matter what soil I put it in. Compost or not, lime or not, meter stayed the same. Will continue to test, but wondering if this thing really works. No luck yet. December 23, 2014 I wanted an easier solution for checking pH in pots than testing runoff or using the Rapid Test (powder in capsules). I followed the instructions that were supplied, and got results similar to other customers. It always settles on 7.0 no matter the type of medium. I also don't think someone should be required to use sandpaper or something other than what is instructed to be able to use this product. I'll keep trying to get it to work, but I believe I'll be sticking with the capsules. I will update if I have better luck. |
One Star Reviews: | 6% Fiskar products are usually good - but not this one June 6, 2017 Much smaller than it looks in the picture, plus the end broke off within 15 minutes of use. I usually love Fiskars products, but this is poor quality and definitely not suitable for "large scoops of soil" that they advertized. An empty soup can is more effective than this poorly made product. I hate to leave bad reviews, but this was not worth purchasing at any price. but the quality was obviously really poor. May 15, 2017 An inch of the tip broke off literally the first time I put it in the dirt. I was really looking forward to this based on the positive reviews, but the quality was obviously really poor. Do not buy September 17, 2016 This is a piece of crap. First off it's a plastic shovel. I have used it maybe 5 times and today I attempted to plant a mum and the tip broke off. Do not Buy. Not for anything but light duty use. June 27, 2016 The blade broke in half the first time I used it to extract a dandelion. It should only be used in already lose dirt. Broke on the first day! June 3, 2016 Don't let the description fool you - this is made of cheap plastic and it snapped in half the first time I used it. | 23% I followed the instructions to a T - distilled water ... May 23, 2016 I followed the instructions to a T - distilled water, cleaning of probe, waited a minute. All results showed my soil as acidic (6 to &) but the capsule based product showed it to be quite basic.(8 to 9) I know that our area is mineral rich and PH is a real problem and so I can only assume that this product isnt doing the job. Found an Oregon State study that evaluated this product and found it not suitable for horticultural use..google it! Read the reviews - some good, some bad February 25, 2016 Read the reviews - some good, some bad. Bought it anyway. My mistake. Followed the directions in detail, but after one use it now reads off-scale even when not in use. Now used to read the pH in the dump. Didn't work for me. I cleaned the probes and ... September 2, 2015 Didn't work for me. I cleaned the probes and tried testing six or seven places in the garden, including some peat moss mix. I tried tilting the device to make sure the needle wasn't stuck, but it moved enough to tell me it wasn't frozen in one position. Everything I tested had the same reading -- slightly alkaline. Even the peat moss and other areas that I know run toward acid. Total garbage, I followed the directions August 28, 2015 Total garbage, I followed the directions, no movement on the dial, poured vinegar in the soil mix, still no movement, If an acidic solution does not register, there is a problem.I should have read the other reviews first. must be a scam! July 30, 2015 I would rate it I big zero as I did everything to tHe letter and the needle never movedSo so disappointed! They're asking for $7.50 to send it back! Don't want to invest another Penney . This is a scam I believe and will NEVER order anything from this vender ... Environmental concept! My foot! I am pretty upset as you can tell!Save your money. Mixing powders would probably work to find out your soil ph....that's my next step no December 13, 2014 It just doesn't work even when I used vinegar to test it it remains at 7.2, Upon opening it up I realized the wiring is for a charge indicator not a ph meter, cheep Chinese garbage do not by litmus paper is a cheep alternative |
