Five Star Reviews: | 65% There are no reviews yet | 56% Mr. Bar-B-Q 06106X Cast-Iron Wok July 25, 2017 Perfect weight, sits solidly on my electric burners. Cleaning the factory goo off was not too bad but it was more than I expected. I seasoned it one time and it cooled a while. I am seasoning it a second time. From experience with previous cast iron products, my first cooking session will leave some stuck on caramelized meat juices in the bottom but that is easy to clean. I love this wok already and recommend it for the quality and the price. Thanks Amazon and Mr. Bar B Q. This is a wok I can work with. A Great Deal on a Good Wok! March 30, 2016 We've used this more than a few times after only a couple of weeks. It works like a charm. I "knew" the cast iron would be better than the steel ones; it heats up and holds that heat, which is great if your stove is not one of those big commercial brands they show on the cooking channels. If you're looking for a great wok at a great price, this may well fit the bill. You could spend a lot more and get some big-name-brand-French-Cuisine one. Why? Sure, if you've got money to blow, I suppose there's a few things that could be better: It is "cast" iron - which to me means that it's cast in a mold. Anytime something comes out of a mold, there is "flashing" - where the seam of the two halves come together and a little bit of the product oozes into that space. The handles, therefore, are not perfectly smooth - but have just a little bit of edge to it. I suppose they could have filed it off - or I could - but it's really no big thing. Probably if I bought the Le Creuset brand, they would have been perfectly milled down. I'd rather save several hundred dollars. Love it. I received it just yesterday and spent ... January 22, 2016 Love it. I received it just yesterday and spent a good deal of time scrubbing the protective coating away and then seasoned it as per the directions. It needed just a bit more, so I repeated the process, and it came out wonderfully. I have several cast iron pieces and think that this may soon be my favorite. Time will tell. I plan to use it often, and I would give this as a gift. Best WOK ever! The only WOK I'll every use from now on! December 2, 2015 Updated review after using it for 1.5 years: After reading other people’s low reviews, I feel like I need to write a detail review to justify how great this wok is. I purchased this wok at FULL price. I am really into cast iron pans. I did a lot of research before I decided to purchase this wok. I was undecided on either this wok or name brand wok like “Lodge” wok. I decided to give this one a try since it’s not expensive. I am so glad I did. This is my only go to wok if I need to stir fried anything. I’ll tell you my experience with this wok from start to now. I have own this wok for about 1.5 years now. Initial prep for the wok: 1. When you first receive this wok, you have to scrub it down like crazy to take off the initial black coating all around the wok, inside and outside. I think I scrubbed down to almost seeing the silver color bottom. It took me about 1 hour just to scrub it clean. 2. Use paper towel and lightly coat the wok with Crisco All Vegetable Shortening. Then baked in the oven at 500 degree for about 2 hours. During this time, if you didn’t scrub the wok clean, the wok will emit very nasty smell and will stink your whole house. The fume is very toxic. I knew this because I didn’t scrub it clean the first time. It took me several hours to air out the smell. So make sure you scrub it clean and take out all the black coating. 3. After 2 hours, then you repeat the step 2 process for about 3 time. 4. By the 3rd time, you should have a very dark coating wok. This coating is what makes the wok NON STICK. Now, you have a perfect wok!!! Cleaning: 1. NEVER EVER use any dish detergent. If you use dish detergent on this wok, it will take off the coating that you previously work on. Then it will not be non stick anymore. 2. After you cook, you can use water directly on this hot wok. Then stuff will come off right away. Always clean right after cook when the wok is still HOT. It’s harder to clean when it’s cool down. 3. NEVER EVER Soak this wok with water. Cast iron cannot be soaked with water. It will rust! 4. After you clean, you will need to dry it with the burner. I usually let it burn for about 2 mins. Then turn off the heat and coat it with oil again. Then it’s ready for your next use. During the 2 min, I usually prep the table sitting. So after I am done, I go back to kitchen and turn off the burner. Cooking with the wok: 1. Always PRE-HEAT the wok. Preheat at high heat for about 2~3 mins. Put in the oil after it’s preheated. I always use high smoking point oil, like coconut oil or grape seed oil. 2. After heated wok, NOTHING will stick! 3. Try not to cook this wok with acidity food, such as tomato. The acidity will ruin the non-sticky coating on the wok. 4. I still do cook acidity food with this wok. However, that’s after I have use this wok for 6 months already. I already have THICK coating on this wok. I hope this review will help all the people out there that loves to cook with cast iron! It is a great cooking investment if you are looking for healthy cooking! No more Teflon! Old review at 12/2/2015 Best purchase ever! I have been using the wok for about 6 months now. It works better than my "Buyer" NO food ever stick to this wok if you warm up right. I usually leave the med. heat on for 3 min before I put oil in. Then no sticking what so ever! I love this WOK. I told my family member to get it too... I think I had influenced at least 4 people to purchase this wok after I showed them how easy it is to use it. Outstanding November 25, 2015 We always cook with cast iron. I seasoned the wok as directed and set it up with a light coating of Crisco. After about a week I cooked some hamburger meat for spaghetti. I then wiped it out and sauteed some onions and peppers. Afterwards, I just wiped it out, sprayed it with a light coating of PAM. I had been looking for a cast iron wok for a while, and they ranged from 50.00 to well over a 100.00. When I saw this for 19.95, I thought this would be thin and flimsy. This is 9 pounds and cooks like a dream. Season it per the instructions and you can't go wrong. This product will last a lifetime. |
Four Star Reviews: | 14% There are no reviews yet | 17% Great! August 17, 2016 I've had this wok for a little over 3 months now, and have not experienced any problems other reviewers have listed. I cleaned it, and seasoned it as instructed and this wok has been holding up well. It stays hot, and appears to have a nice uniform pattern of heat distribution. I use it on the stove top as well as in the oven without issue. 4 stars because I would have liked some heat resistant handles. Heavy and Huge - not in a bad way August 6, 2016 Wow. THis pan is large and in charge! I'm anemic and iwas told that I should try to cook in iron pots. I enjoy making a good stirfry every now and again and I was pleasantly surprised to see a large iron wok here on Amazon. I purchased this and arrive the next day. This is the real deal. Most woks are somewhat thin and light, but this was very heavy and sturdy- not in a bad way. It's fits a ton of vegetables and does great job of making stir fry. It also doesn't effective job of lightly frying some items. We keep it seasons with oil and it's very easy to clean up. I'm happy with this purchase. Will come back and adjust after seasoning and first use ... August 4, 2016 Will come back and adjust after seasoning and first use, but I wanted to offer this up for anyone considering this item. Just arrived, and it's heavy enough to go on the grill and solidly cast. Including a picture because I was sure it would show up smaller than expected, but it looks big enough to feed four. Best deal for the price! December 5, 2015 I wasn't expecting much when i bought this wok because I really wanted the Lodge wok but it is just too expensive. I was surprised at the quality of this one and am very pleased i use it almost everyday. What a great product and.very reasonably priced! A Wok with heft August 17, 2015 Very solid wok and you can definitely feel the heft. I took the time to season it to ensure I get a surface that does not adhere to the food, this should improve with frequent use. Two things to watch out for the handles can get hot since they are not covered and when you factor in the size and weight of the wok, pouring food out of it can be interesting. |
Three Star Reviews: | 8% There are no reviews yet | 6% Clean off the black stuff March 27, 2016 When seasoning the pan it started to bubble black stuff that I had to keep wiping off. I got a great price and really really like this item and want to be able to use it, so I will continue to try to clean it so this black stuff isn't contaminating my food, but right now I would not say it is safe to use for food. Mr BBQ Wok December 31, 2015 It does feel heavy duty, but I am not sure to how true this product is. Some of the black coating seems to have flaked away. A wok bigger than I had expected! August 14, 2015 it is big and heavy. It is bigger than I had expected. Nothing wrong with that. takes up a lot of space on the grill. make sure you measure before you buy |
Two Star Reviews: | 5% There are no reviews yet | 7% Very disappointing. Leaves black residue on everything July 24, 2015 This product was a birthday gift for my father and turned out to be very disappointing. I ordered it because it had great reviews and it looked like a decent product. My dad only used it one time and found black residue from the finish of the Wok all in his food and sponge as he was cleaning it. The finish started to chip in the center after only one use and residue was found on everywhere. The product did not meet expectations at all and will only give it one star, but decided to give it 2 because Amazon allowed me to return it after the 30 day window. I recommend something else as this product is no good Cracked due to poor packaging November 19, 2007 I honestly think this would have been a 4-star rating -- if the wok had arrived unscathed. This thing feels solid, and I would have loved to have tried cooking with it. Unfortunately, like many others, mine arrived cracked due to poor packaging; the wok was just stuffed in a large box with some brown paper and corrugated cardboard, which apparently did not prevent a shock to the handle during shipment, and which is approximately where the crack occurred. I have attached a short video clip taken with my Flip Video Ultra Series Camcorder, 60-Minutes (White) to show the extent of the crack (sorry about the sound of the range hood); I passed a single-use coffee pack, the most colorful thing I had handy, to show how bad the crack was. So 4-stars for the wok, 0-stars for the packaging, averages out to 2-stars. I guess buyer beware -- you might get lucky, but then again.... Kudos to Amazon for making the return process relatively painless, but after all these complaints you'd think they'd figure out a better way to package this thing!Follow-up: The same day I received the cracked wok, I decided to order a Lodge Logic 10-1/4-Inch Pre-Seasoned Skillet (I know, a skillet is not going to replace a wok, but I wasn't ready to spend the $60+ for a Lodge wok just yet). Anyways, I was a bit worried when I opened the box and saw that the skillet was not packaged any better than the wok, but fortunately there were no cracks evident. My only conclusion is that the Lodge is better made, since I'm sure it experienced just as much rough handling in transit as the wok. |
One Star Reviews: | 8% There are no reviews yet | 14% Coated with something nasty October 3, 2016 I have used this Wok twice, each time a foul odor permeated my kitchen, a nasty taste got in the food, and a considerable amount of a black paint-like coating flaked off into my food. I thought cast-iron wasn't supposed to have a coating? the protection left as if it was a bad painting of the Wok May 14, 2016 After a couple of months, the protection left as if it was a bad painting of the Wok. I am very disappointed. I've only cooked with it 4 times - and seasoned ... February 15, 2016 I've only cooked with it 4 times - and seasoned it as directed in the instructions. There is an odd black factory type finish on it and fhe black coating is coming off into my food. Avoid this Cast-Iron Wok - I'm not sure what the coating is, and if it is from China - it probably isn't healthy. I am returning it in an attempt to get a refund. Idk what peeled off it but under that it looked like aluminum. But it's heavy September 5, 2015 It peeled after a few uses. Idk what peeled off it but under that it looked like aluminum.
