Excellent, But With One Glaring Flaw
April 17, 2017
I was a bit skeptical about buying a carbon steel wok over a stainless steel one, but I think I made the right choice. The handle is welded to the wok and is very stable. It's light for its size and both heats up and cools down quickly, which is desirable for stir frying.

It has to be seasoned, of course, and Wok Shop included their suggested method with the packaging. Clean-up is easily dealt with by using the abrasive side of an unsoaped Scotch Brite pad. Soap will break up the carbonized oils and proteins that make up the seasoned patina of the wok and you'll have to season it all over again. After cleaning, put it over low heat to dry, then rub in a light coat of oil to help protect against rust. It's a meditative ritual.

The flaw: there's no good way to store this wok. You don't want it in a cupboard or cabinet with other pans, since them rubbing up against the wok's interior will scratch away that nonstick patina you've been carefully maintaining. There's no hole bored in the handle for hanging on a hook, either. I've taken to storing mine in my oven when it's not in use.
fantasticness!!! Sturdy, solid construction

I decided I needed a wok to capture that essential Asian flavor that comes from wok cooking. I am very happy with this purchase. The wok sits well on the butane burner I got for it and heats up super fast. Will be working with this from now on as I perfect my Asian flavor profiles. This holds enough ingredients to serve dinner for 3 easily. Took a bit of learning to make sure I kept the food moving or stuff burns super fast!!! Which... Is the point of the wok. So far I've deep fried, stir fried, made fried rice and general tso's, I'm lovin it!

Recommend wok utensils that are metal and a bamboo cleaner brush.

This is really well built. I think some people said it wasn't hand made but it does look like the finish of it is hand made, stuff like the rivets don't look like they were machined in. The lip around the edge is a little rough and this is further evidence that someone at least put their hands on it and it wasn't complete machine made. I had first bought a Joyce Chen wok and that was garbage; at high heat, the rivets came loose and the handle fell off (and that was just when I used it for the first time to season. The rivets on this are very solid.

It does come with some sort of protective coating on it that needs to be removed first. Be prepared to spend a solid hour getting that coat off. Don't just put it over the heat and burn it off, your house will stink for days. Follow the directions and fill it up with water and boil the water for about 20 minutes. The film coating will bubble to the top and you can just scoop it off (use a metal chuan or other spatula, don't use wood or the film will stick and ruin the wood utensil). After you've boiled the water dump it out and be prepared to scrub the remaining film with the steel scour pad they provide. I had to use more than one so you may want to pick some of those up. After I got all the coating off on the inside I went to dry it and realized the coating is on the bottom too, so I scrubbed that off too with the pad while occasionally running steaming hot water over it.

With the film all gone I put the wok over high heat and burned the entire thing, it took about another 15 minutes. There was still minimal amounts of that coating on the wok and it burned off mostly and made a really bad stink. After that I scrubbed it again to make sure no more film was on it. Then I seasoned it by reheating, adding a little bit of oil (2 tablespoons) and frying some garlic, ginger, and onion. I fried it until they were blacked and the pan blacked up as well. The more you use it the darker it will get and the better it will become. Solid product.
The perfect Wok!

This is an original, hand hammered, carbon steel Wok. The handle is also steel which makes it perfect oven & stovetop cookware.
Very easy to season, deep fry, stir fry, saute, boil, steam, bake & broil! It's also the perfect tool for steaming an entire meal
using a quality 3 tier woven bamboo steamer.

After proper seasoning, this Wok remains non-stick while still allowing cooked foods to be moved up the sides to stay warm
while the bottom of the Wok is used to quick saute other ingredients. The perfect one-pot meal is easily made using this Wok.
If you can only afford one cooking utensil, this is the one to get!
Love it!

I researched a ton of different woks and this fit the bill. After reading the reviews, I was hoping for the best, but figured for the money, it wouldn't be so bad if it wasn't good as it wasn't terribly expensive.

As others had stated, the hammered marks are clearly machine stamped as they are very uniform. Once again, I personally don't care about that. The quality of the wok is very good. It is uniform and the handle is welded on so there is no chance of wobble.

First thing I did was wash it with soap twice, and then dry very good. I then rubbed it completely down with peanut oil and put it on my gas grill at 425 for about 20 minutes. I put foil down and the wok on that to protect it from a direct flame. I used the grill, as others suggested due to the excessive smoking from burning off the oil from the manufacturing process. I pulled it out at the 20 minute park and it had a great golden brown look.

At that point, after it cooled, I got it hot and put a nice amount of chives (about 2 inches long) and fresh sliced, unpeeled ginger into peanut oil. It took about 5 minutes until the chives were crispy. I completely rubbed the full wok this way, which pulls out the metallic taste and is one of many ways to season.

We have now cooked 3 dishes on this wok. I absolutely love it!!! Even when you see something stick some, when you put sauce in, it quickly deglazes it and ends up back to smooth. It will get better the more we cook on it.

We have only washed with water, and then dry good. I then heat it back up to dry any moisture from the pores of the metal. If there is anything in the wok that the water could not get out, I heat up coarse salt and rub real good with heat and it cleans it right up.

Nice Quality

It's light weight, excellent coating for cleaning, cooks evenly and priced right :-) I wouldn't change anything about this wok.
Great for Thai and Curry Dishes
April 7, 2017
My new favorite way to cook. Since buying this I found making curry and Thai dishes is so much easier and fun. It is really big so I can cook a lot!! Great price for such an amazing product.

I love this wok. It is large and easy to clean. The handles feel sturdy and the pan itself is nice and lightweight. It has a flat bottom for easy use.

I feel bad for only rating this wok "I like it"
July 28, 2016
I feel bad for only rating this wok "I like it", because its only fault is that I have small hands and the 1 5/8" diameter handle with the addition of a hotpad gets unwieldy. Other than that personal ergonomic quibble, the wok is well made and fun to use.
A nice big wok
January 20, 2016
I like it - large (would probably require two hands to lift it if you were making a lot of stir fry), but very well made. Could use a hole in the handle for hanging, but I think I can do that myself. I would buy again.
Very good wok. I think handle needs to be smaller ...
November 20, 2015
Very good wok. I think handle needs to be smaller 1/2 inch less circumference would be better. Came banged up on one side but hammered it back. Small problem. It is pretty deep about 3 inches approx. from picture looks shallow.
Very nice wok
December 30, 2013
This is my first foray into true wok cooking, and the quality of the wok is very nice. I have several large Asian supermarkets here in town, and the quality of the woks sold there are nowhere near as nice as this one (which might beg the question: Do you really need a nice wok to cook well if the Asian population buys really cheap stuff. ;) One thing I did not follow was the seasoning instructions as they seem excessively tedious. I have a high-output jet burner and used a technique I saw on YouTube. The guy placed the wok straight on the burner at super-high heat until the metal almost glowed red. He rotated it so that all parts of the wok got the same heat treatment. There's NOTHING left on the metal after that I guarantee you. Hit it with some hot soapy water and a steel scrubby sponge, dry it off, then liberally coat the wok in oil, drain, wipe off and DONE. It took only a few minutes and it works just like in the video.
Not hand-hammered construction, but still a good wok
January 3, 2013
I bought this wok and was initially dismayed to find that it is made of machined, smooth metal with some hammer marks (which, btw, look way too regularly spaced and indented to be hand-made). I guess I was looking for a pricing miracle, but genuine hand-hammered woks look to cost more around $100 and up. However, it is still a great-looking and -functioning wok. Seasoning brings out the beauty of the textured surface. Really like the welded handle, but make sure to scrub well inside it before seasoning, as the machine oil gets trapped in there. No real complaints here, except for the disingenuous product description.

Very large for home use.

It really too big for my purposes but it is a nice one.
The wok showed up but my date never did
September 8, 2016
Ordered this on Monday and received it onnwednesdwy in time to make some General Tso's chicken for a guy who stood me up. The wok seem to heat evenly and the long handled remained cool the entire time I spent frying 3 lbs of chicken thighs in small batches. No reason not to recommend.
Good but coated
April 25, 2016
It may be carbon steel, but despite not being obvious in the description, it is coated. Not a traditional carbon steel wok. However, it does work very well at the price, everything I've made has been great, I'm just not sure how long it will last before the coating comes off.

Nice, but not really hand-hammered.
June 16, 2014
Don't get me wrong, this is a nice wok. Decent steel, thicker on the bottom than up around the rim, really solid, welded steel handle. But the metal looks like it was machined, and the marks you see in the photo are far too regularly sized and spaced to have come from a hammer. It'll probably function just like a hand-hammered wok, but it isn't one. I really wish it came with a wok ring and lid, too, but it didn't.

Look elsewhere if what caught your eye was the cool hammer marks on the photo, Also Wok has no hole to hang it under that tape
February 20, 2016
I should have paid more attention to the poor reviews. I'm sure that cleaned up and re-seasoned this wok will give your family plenty of joy. That is what the extra star is for.It will be giving some Salvation Army shopper joy, as the seller correctly pointed out to me that it cost more to ship it than it's worth... true. And that they would refund me the wok and not the shipping... I'll let my fingers do the protesting and give an honest review. I won't ruin everyone's opportunity to buy a cheapo special wok because I'm sure that if I insist on getting refunded through Amazon, they will stop selling this item on Amazon and that could really be a bummer to some good cook to be.All they had to do was take the fake hammer marks (false advertising) off the photo and I wouldn't have bought it. All they need to do is put up an"as it really is" advertisement . Take a look at the wok I actually got. Smooth as ice... minus the scratches someone gave it by wacking it a time or two so they can get away with calling it "hand-hammered".This wok also does *not* have hole to hang it by, unlike my other cheapo special perfectly fine wok. I have read that hammer marks help hold the food up the sides and I was looking for an "upgrade". I chose this Wok, not because it was cheap, but because the photo looks like it had hammer marks. If it cost $100 (The seller said I should know better and what did I expect from such a cheap wok?) or whatever they said it cost for a wok with hammer marks, I would have also paid that. I own plenty of All Clad... also bought on Amazon and vintage cast iron Griswold cookware bought on Ebay. These items are not cheap. I'm willing to pay for quality cookware. Carbon steel is a "cheap" metal so I honestly didn't know I was ripping someone off by paying the price the asked for it. Maybe they should just try selling a real hand hammered one and charge what they need to instead of baiting and switching people into buying a fake and having at attitude about it.Also, FYI...I just assumed that under that bluish tape there would be a hole... No hole to hang it up so prepare for this wok to be inconveniently stuck under a pile of other pots and pans and less likely to be used. Again as a near freebie, some homeless person is going to feel like they struck gold.If anyone knows where to get a quality hand hammered wok, holla at me. I'm willing to pay for quality cookware. I practically live in my kitchen and I want the stuff my great-granchildren can appreciate. I suppose I'll have to wait until I'm next in NYC to go to a real Chinatown and buy a real one in person and ship it myself. Oh well. What can you expect from San Francisco Chinatown?

Used a few times and it cooks well, but even with careful use and no metal utensils, the teflon coating is peeling up.

dangerous unstable wok. out of balance
December 12, 2013
one piece wok was shoved into a box and taped together, took wok out of packaging and placed wok on gas stove cradle. it wobbled excessively and was never in balance. I cant imagine having hot oil or food in it, contacted the seller who questioned my dislike extensively as they have "NEVER' had any one complain. She suggested i made a mistake and should have purchased a flat one, but also told me to buy a wok cradle .
I did use their seasoning instructions which were helpful
Had to pay shipping to and return .

Warped first use
September 8, 2016
Washed it. Dried it. Put it on the stove and the flat bottom warped. I also thought it didn't have non-stick coating, but it does. Says it right on the label.
The coating came off in first use with wooden spoon ...

The coating came off in first use with wooden spoon. Description of the product is very inadequate , it does not mention the coating.. So am not sure if this is safe for cooking with coating peeling off into the food
Honesty is the best policy
July 18, 2015
I just bought this wok and it was my first. I read all the other reviews and made the choice of this one because of the reviews. This wok is very thin (1.0) m.m., flimsy and it is not heavy duty and no professional would ever use this wok. It may be carbon steel but, that must be under the cheap non-stick coating that is on it. The first time I used it I used a metal wok utensil and it scratch it very bad. They should have described this wok honesty. Not heavy duty and WITH a non stick coating. Do not use metal utensils.
