Woo! Coffee.
October 7, 2016
So glad I finally pulled the trigger on buying this grinder. I researched quality entry-level conical burr grinders for about 3 months and finally came to the conclusion that this would be my best bet. I'm very happy with everything that this grinder has. While I would prefer it to not be plastic, it fits the price and my mobile life for the time being. I grind at 13 for my Hario V60.
Great Grinder, Great Parts and Upgrades - The ultimate!
June 11, 2015
Baratza is the ultimate coffee grinder. No, really, this really is the ultimate line of grinders for general use and possibly for espresso too. Let me explain.I am switching from a ceramic burr grinder by Capresso. The Capresso (About $60) has the advantage of having a timer so you start and forget, and it's a little quieter and the grinder setting easier to read. On the other hand, you will get more consistent grind quality with the Baratza and a little less static induced chaff scattering. Please note I use this exclusively for pour over, but if I ever do need a grinder more suited to espresso I will only buy a Baratza. So, why do I say this is the ultimate grinder? One thing I find really frustrating today is really expensive appliances being no more reliable than their cheap counterparts but costing an arm and a leg to fix and being poorly supported by the manufacturer which turns out to be merely a brand facade with only marketters on the payroll. You buy a $400 coffee grinder and a week after the warranty expires some micro switch dies or the motor burns out. You find out the replacement parts, if available, will cost you $300. For these reasons I don't seek ultimate luxury but great coffee and ultimate non-frustrativeness. Honestly in terms of reliability, features scare me. I'd rather not have a CPU in my appliances thank you, they tend to break, and then you are left with an expensive non-recyclable door stopper. After purchasing the Baratza I discovered they have an OUTSTANDING replacement part ordering system. From the internal frame to the switch, everything that could break is available as a replacement for VERY reasonable prices. The motor for instance I is right now around $40. I also saw they offer an upgrade for older models that had some gear issues for a reasonable price. Outstanding! Much better than a company that doesn't even acknowledge there is a problem or makes you buy a completely new model. Baratza even have a set of videos and documentation to help you with even complicated repairs. For this model you can find a link on the manufacturer's website to a timer upgrade, for instance. I just can't say enough of how unique and wonderful I found this.
Good Coffee Grinder, Very Pleased
June 3, 2015
There are reviews out there that state this doesn't grind fine. Maybe I'm not a qualified coffee connoisseur, but this certainly does the trick for me! I nice range of grind levels. I like my coffee very fine and this produces a fine, almost powdery grind without turning the beans to dust. It's slow and loud, but for about $100, it's what I expected. The top hopper is great. The finished bin is a little messy, but I'm not sure what could be done better there. The finished bin is a bit too small to fit an entire hopper-load. An entire hopper-load makes a lot of coffee grinds.
Best part about this is the grind settings and recommendations
August 27, 2014
I went from a manual hand grinder to this machine. It was well worth the price on Amazon. The grinder is a bit taller than I expected; The hopper lid does not stay on securely; it more just rests on it - I never keep beans in the hopper; I pour in what I use for the day.Features a convient press-to-grind button along with an On/Off switch.Best part about this is the grind settings and recommendations! I usually grind for a V60 (medium-low / fine) or French Press (higher / coarse), you can easily switch the settings. I don't make espresso (yet), but have grinded some on that setting and it's wonderfully fine.*EDIT 1/5/14* - Grinder is still running great - my above comment about the hopper lid not staying on securely, this is not an issue, it was not designed to, and it does not fall off when in operation, just an FYI if you were looking for something that locked air tight.Time for Espresso! I recently got a stainless steel krups 15 bar semi-auto espresso machine; it works great! The grinder does grind fine enough, but I wish it could grind even finer. The card that it comes with recommends below a 6 setting for espresso; if you don't use the pulse button repeatedly, the beans dont fall through and don't get ground by the burrs. I haven't called Baratza about a solution as I been grinding espresso on level 8; and it comes out well - so I'm happy. The espresso has a decent amount of crema and I can taste the different notes (i use more than just espresso roasted beans for espresso). I may in the future call and see if I can slow down the burr's to go even lower; but for now; it works and I'm happy.
New and Improved Encore Coffee Grinder
June 14, 2012
After exhaustive research on grinders under 200 bucks I pulled the trigger on this one. I did not want a noisy high rpm grinder and was pleasantly surprised at how low the rpm level is and the corresponding lack of noise this grinder makes.A very nice size (small footprint on counter)and can grind just as well for a twelve cup coffee maker or pulse grind into your portafilter with excellent results. Also, not much coffee gets left behind in the shoot and what does collect is easy to whisk away with the provided brush.I also own and have used daily a Kitchen AidKitchenAid Pro Line Series Burr Coffee Mill, Onyx Black for the last several years that works well enough for drip grind and is a work horse to be sure, however even with new replaced burrs just doesn't cut it for espresso. My Daughter just got a Bodum BistroBodum Bistro Electric Burr Coffee Grinder, Blacklast Christmas that actually produces a very high quality grind not unlike the Encore, but just not the same volume and probably not as durable. This is a well built grinder with a high quality grind and lots of grind options at a very reasonable price.
Finally, a does-it-all grinder for under $300!

*** Final Update***I have now been using this grinder for close to 2 years. I have also purchased a Vario-W in order to grind by weight as I thought that would help with my consistency while making espresso; however, I will be honest, I now use the Vario for Drip and Press and use the Encore exclusively for espresso. I'm sure the Vario would work just as well (probably better) but I have found the right setting, tamp pressure, etc that makes the coffee I like using the Encore, so why mess with a good thing? I mention that for the benifit of those thinking this might not be a good espresso grinder. While I am aware that there are other pro-sumer models available, this one has been great. It does not have a large range of usable settings for espresso, but with varying tamp pressure, you should be able to get what you are looking for. A quick story about Baratza's customer support: a few months ago I noticed that my grind was suddenly too course and my shots were flowing way to fast. Since the grinder was well outside of its one-year warrany, I took it apart and found that the insides had been severely damaged. I had just moved form Washington State to Alabama and I am sure the damage was due to the poor packing and handling my goods received from our movers. (A story for another day). Anyway, as I mentioned somewhere below in one of my earlier reviews, Baratza sells pieces to replace your grinder should you need them. I needed a new ring assembly that holds the actual grinder teeth in place (consisting of several pieces) and even a new internal housing to remount the motor as some of the mounts had been broken (probably from the movers throwing my things). I was surprised to see everyting I needed was actually available to the consumer on their website - no annoying calls to convince someone to sell me those pieces. While I was at it, I decided I would also replace some other pieces that I figured wouldn't hurt - all in all I was looking at around $30 to rebuild my grinder like new. I was pretty excited about the prices. I emailed Baratza and told them my story and asked if they had any guides or schematics to help me in the rebuild. Within a day, I recieved a reply from Baratza and they told me I shouldn't have such an extensive failure with my unit in such a short time of owning it and they told me they had canceled my order and were shipping me a NEW grinder - and to please return the broken one in the box along with a prepaid shipping label they provided!!! I wrote back and explained that my grinder was no longer under warranty and the damages were due to mishandling: not a manufacturing defect - I thought someone had misunderstood me. They wrote back and said they were sorry my grinder was broken by the movers and they were happy to replace it! I couldn't believe it - they sent me another grinder with no payment from me and simply trusted me to return the broken one. When I got the new grinder I noticed the grind settings were different from the earlier one - I had read they tuend it up for better espresso performance and they did - before I was unable to "choke" my Quickmill Silvano - now if I use a setting below 6, it chokes up. I find settings 6-8 work the best for espresso, 18-24 for drip/pour-over and 30-35 for French Press. Of course, that is all highly subjective and your mileage may vary, but if you are new to the Encore, perhaps that will give you a "ballpark" to work with. Anyway, since that day about 5 months ago, I've continued using my Encore and am very pleased with it. I highly recommend it for its performance, simplicity (sometimes simple is better) and the customer support the Baratza team provided.*** 1 Year Update***I have been using this grinder multiple times per day for a year now and so far I have NO problems to report. It still grinds just as well as it did on day one, the burrs are still sharp and I still love this grinder. I have no doubt I made the right purchase and I am glad I didn't opt for the "fancy" lcd models with the automated grind features; to me all those extra bells & whistles = more that could break. If I were to upgrade, it would be for a unit in another "class"; perhaps the Vario, but that is several $100 more and I don't see any reason to do so at this time. I will add that there is a 1 star review on this site that complains about larger beans not feeding through the hopper. Initially, I thought it sounded silly; however, not long ago, I roasted a batch of beans much darker than usual (VERY VERY dark roast), resulting in the beans being about 1 1/2 times their usual size. While grinding, I noticed that about 4 beans got lodged between the hopper and burrs. I tapped the side of the unit a few times and the final beans fed through the hopper. I had this happen two or three times. So, I suppose if you habitually use a bean that is much larger than your typical coffee bean, you might have an issue. Just search through the 1 star reviews for more details (at the time of this update, there was only one 1 star review).Summary: fantastic grinder for an excellent price makes this a best buy in my book and I highly recommend it to anyone who is a serious coffee drinker.***Update***I've been using this grinder daily for almost 4 months, grinding enough for about 12 cups each day (maybe more on weekends). I usually use it early morning, afternoon and evening. I grind mainly for drip and espresso, occasionally for French press or pour-over. I still have no complaints with this grinder: I believe I made the right choice between this and fancier LCD options. I've ground for a 12 cup pot on numerous occasions when company comes over, and it never overheats or bogs or slows down- I don't think it notices if you're grinding for 1 cup or 12! Everything is solid and the burrs are still sharp as ever. Once a month I disassemble it to give it a good cleaning. It doesn't seem to retain much grinds in the chamber. My only gripe is the static build up after grinding can make a mess when you pull out the grind chamber: there are enough grinds clinging to the exit chute to scatter on the counter if you're not careful (to be fair, this is a common problem plaguing all burr grinders). But really I don't even notice that anymore, after a couple weeks you develop your own routine on how to deal with it and it ceases being an issue. I tend to grind, prep the coffee pot/filter to give the static time to discharge, then I give it a solid knock or two on the side and front before taking out the chute (thankfully this is a VERY solid grinder). It might sound tedious, but I actually had to sit here and think about it because it's simply second nature now and I don't even notice doing it. The only time I notice the problem is when someone else uses the grinder who isn't aware of the "technique".Another great feature is that baratza sells every piece imaginable should you ever have a problem in the future: right down to a new motor or exterior knobs! All the pieces seemed priced appropriately. So while this may not be important to some, I like knowing that should the need arise, my equipment is completely serviceable. So I guess when the day comes that I need new burrs, I won't be shopping for another grinder, but paying a small sum for a new set of burrs. I didn't find that option on many of the other units I shopped around for. Ultimately, I still completely recommend this grinder and would not hesitate to recommend it to anyone who wants quality, affordability and versatility all rolled into a single package!***Original Review***I've been looking for a grinder that I could use with my current espresso machine (pressurized portafilter), drip coffee pot, and french press and would also allow me to grow into a more expensive espresso machine (i.e. the Rancilio Silvia or Quickmill Silvano). I was looking at the Rocky grinder, the Baratza Vario and Virtuoso Preciso, the Breville Smart Grinder, et al. Then I came along the Encore which I believe is new for 2012. I read several "professional" reviews and even saw some video reviews where the Encore was able to "choke" the Silvia at around grind setting "6". If you aren't aware, the Maestro and Maestro Plus (which the Encore replaces) weren't able to grind fine enough to choke the Silvia straight from the factory. Although this grinder isn't "stepless" (you have a larger variance from one "click" to the next when adjusting the grind setting, you still get 40 settings which are plenty for any home grinder. With a little tamping technique, this grinder will work fine for any espresso machine - not my opinion - the "pros" opinion. I am currently using it with my pressurized espresso machine, my drip pot and the occasional pour over and french press. It works great for them all! While it doesn't perform as well (or so I've read) as the Preciso or other high-end grinders, the fact that you can even begin to compare them speaks volumes for Baratza. I believe that currently there is NO other grinder on the market that can stand next to this one in terms of quality & versatility within the price range. Maybe the Breville Smart Grinder, but it still costs 50% more, I don't like the LCD display and I've heard (no practical experience) from several sources that Breville customer service is not quite up to par. If any of you out there care, the Baratza Maestro and Maestro Plus were already popular grinders and Baratza completely over-hauled it and produced the Encore - it offers WAY more at the same price. I'm sorry if this sounds like I'm selling the Baratza name, but this is the first of their products I've owned - I'm just impressed they did this with the Encore. So often a company produces a 2nd iteration of a product with lesser features or cheaper quality parts. Check it out for yourself, the innards are improved for better durability along with the burrs for a more consistent and fine grind! WOW...who does that?!Oh, and the first time I used it my wife was in the other room (separated by an open doorway) and she was shocked to find I had used it without her hearing it! Maybe when I close the door and begin my 5am grinding I won't wake the kids! The only con (which I've heard is not an uncommon problem with this type of grinder) is that when I remove the grind container and IF I accidentally knock the grinder, leftover grinds can fall from the chute onto the counter. I have a Dustbuster within arms reach of the grinder so it's no big deal, but if I didn't, it might aggravate me.I'm so glad I bought this and not one of the other many many brands I researched for months. I completely recommend it.

Fantastic Steel Conical Burr Grinder
September 7, 2017
This grinder....

It's fantastic. I use it at least everyday, sometimes 2-3 times a day. All in all I probably grind an average of 45 grams of coffee a day in it, usually light roast (harder beans) and it works like a champ. It's OUTRAGEOUSLY easy to clean. The quality of the copper (and aluminum presumably) is fantastic. The grind settings are consistent, the burrs are sharp, the speed is great. It's honestly not even that loud (it might wake up a baby in the next room, but not on the other side of the house... ask me how I know :/ ). Also, the grind settings are not fixed, it is basically infinitely variable and I can confirm it is great for as fine as for an aero press (just short of espresso) up to a french press (very coarse). I don't have an espresso machine so I can't speak to that.

I know a lot of folks get worked up about the main gears being hard plastic (and I mean like... ABS hard) but after months of use (and cleaning it between every few pounds of coffee) this thing is clean, smooth, and running like a champ. Also, it has a 2 year warranty, so people who complained about it breaking after 13 months... use the warranty--that's what it is there for.

I would strongly recommend this grinder. You need to figure out what you do, but this is awesome.
Quality grinder, has lasted over 5 years now
March 27, 2017
Wanting to replace the tedious hand burr grinder that I use pretty regularly at my girlfriend's house, I searched Amazon for an electric one. I came across some cheaper alternatives to the Bodum grinder...but not sure if I want to save $30-40 for a grinder that might fail in a year or two. I have had this Bodum model for over 5 years now (purchased in December 2011), and it is still going strong. For that reason I will purchase it again. I do not use it regularly - in fact, over the past couple of years it has really only been used once or twice a week since I have been doing large batches of cold brewed coffee - but when I do use it, the motor is running for the full 20 seconds so that I can get a good full cup of coarse ground coffee. I have probably cleaned the unit just two or three times over the years...so I don't really baby it either.

After considering some alternatives, the thing I like most about this unit is that it has a large coffee hopper (12 oz. versus the typical 8 oz.), easily allows you to set a wide range of grind consistency and has a separate dial for the grind time (0-20 seconds) so you can just push a button and let it grind out a consistent and predictable amount of coffee each time, and it has the nice glass container that holds the grounds versus the typical plastic ones. I also liked that I paid $80 for this in 2011 and now it is only $72...not sure if that is timing or if the price has decreased a bit over the years.

I will be going back to what has worked for me in the past - the Bodum Bistro grinder.
Kicked the pot after five years!
December 24, 2016
This is a post-mortem review. I bought this in January 2012 and it just died December 2016...let's call it five years. Not bad for a product used almost daily. So I don't have much to complain about. Couple of things....the glass receptacle for collecting the grounds broke almost immediately. And the rubbery finish is hard to keep clean. In fact, it was after cleaning it recently that it kicked the coffee pot. How could wiping it down kill it? Could be coincidence, or maybe it was just on the edge and turning it off to wipe it thoroughly was enough to make something finally fail. But honestly, five years for a kitchentop appliance? I may try to repair it...because that's the kind of guy I am.

Now I have to replace it. Do I get the same thing or try something else? What do you think? The Cuisinart CBM-18N Programmable Conical Burr Mill looks appealing.
Very Nice
June 9, 2016
First, this thing is made in China. However, it seems to be very well made and appears to be durable. The grind adjustment is the hopper itself and is variable from super coarse to powder, I use a stovetop espresso maker so I like a pretty fine grind. The grounds container is borosilicate glass and does not exhibit the static (grounds sticking to the container) like plastic ones do. The grounds stick mildly but with gentle tapping on the container, you will win the battle of grounds expulsion (as long as the open end is facing down). Now, the really cool part. As can be seen in the main image, the power switch is in the lower left side, just aft of the grounds catcher. On the top of the unit, just in front of the hopper is the timer and the on/off switch. The timer can be set from one second to twenty second or anywhere in between. Set the timer, there are markings for 5, 10 and 20 seconds, turn on the power and push the on/off switch. If for any reason, you need to terminate the grinding before the machine has completed the timed grind, just push the on/off switch again. At first, I didn't think I was going to like this feature, but it is actually what makes this grinder even cooler than it looks. My only complaint about the timer is that it has no resistance (of course, resistance is futile) and it is quite easy to change the timed grind when moving the machine if you put a finger or a thumb on the timer as the machine is being moved. Just have to check it every time you use it especially if there is more than one person in the household. Some reviewers talk about noise, I suppose if you don't want to wake someone sleeping nearby, wait until you can see the whites of their eyes and then, Punch it! It is packaged well so it should arrive unscathed from its travels. If you purchase one of these, Enjoy!
Quality affordable burr grinder
November 23, 2010
Hi. I've never done a video review before, so forgive me if I ramble or go off-topic. Feel free to skip through to any parts you think are relevant. I run the grinder for the first time about halfway through the video. The first half of the video is spent explaining why I bought a new grinder, and what I hope to get out of it (less mess, less noise, consistency in the grind.) Without giving away the surprise ending (there is no surprise), I can simply say that this is the best burr grinder I have ever owned. It is also only the second burr grinder I have ever owned, so I'm no expert :) Although, I was a barista for a couple years, and I can tell a quality grinder when I see it.Cheers, peace, etc.*EDIT* Having used the grinder every day since I received it (and sometimes twice daily), I feel I can now comment on its practical features. Although the grinder seems to create more static/dust when set to a more coarse grind (still negligible static compared to my old burr grinder), the lid on the glass grounds container does a good job of keeping the dust inside the container- not all over my counter. I love the consistency of the grind. No matter the setting, all the grounds seem to be of equal size, which means less sediment in my French press! The machine is also noticeably more quiet than any other grinder I have encountered- burr or otherwise. The twenty second timer fills up about half the grounds container, which is perfect for a 7-8 cup setting on my drip machine. All in all, I would still give it five stars. So I got that going for me, which is nice. Bodum Bistro Electric Burr Coffee Grinder, BlackEDIT #2, July 28, 2013. Glad the review still holds relevance. If it's any help, I use the grinder every morning, and it always works perfectly. I recently started brewing my coffee with an aeropress, and wow, what a smooth cup o' joe. I've had this grinder and used it daily for nearly three years, and never once have I had a problem. To the critics out there: I have used it many times for consecutive 20 second grinds without blowing the motor. I think the cautionary "wait five minutes between grinds" is to ensure we're not using this as a commercial grinder. But for everyday home use, it's awesome.EDIT #3 March 11, 2015. Still use my grinder daily for a French press or pour-over. It's still going strong and performs like it did when it was new. I love it and have never had problems with not being able to grind enough due to the 20-second timer. Zero complaints! Buy with confidence.EDIT #4 December 2016. Over six years and still going strong with daily use. Love this thing!

Great grind, good grinder made great by a paperclip
March 18, 2017
We bought the Baratza Encore a few months ago and after a solid 3-4 months of use I feel comfortable in writing a review. The grinder is really good, but a step below great. What would make it great? My curved, bent up, jumbo paperclip unclogging tool made by Baratza packaged with the grinder. I would say that about 33% of the time I use freshly roasted coffee beans (usually fairly oily) they clog the discharge shoot and my top-shelf paperclip rescues the grinder from my frustration. After oh, 4 or 5 clogs I looked it up on YouTube and funny enough there is a service video from Baratza on how to unclog your grinder's discharge shoot. How does the manufacturer recommend doing this regular bit of sanity saving maintenance? Bend up a paperclip yourself and wiggle that puppy into the discharge shoot.-.-If it's that common, include a tool folks.Otherwise it does a great job of grinding up the beans in a consistent size.
for the money is great. It came with a torn gasket
January 6, 2017
This grider, for the money is great. It came with a torn gasket, fortunately Amazon's customer service is the some of the best around and refunded us the amount that it would cost to order a new one. The great thing about Baratza is that you can order all parts from them, in fact if you wanted to build one yourself as a project, you probably could. So not a big deal. The grind is great and even, the range is sufficient for most home brewing however a burr grinder is most useful for French press and other brew methods that grind size is important or the filter system isn't as fine. My only complaints are the same as most folks, the catcher doesn't catch it all and the area surrounding the unit ends up messy. Also, run it between grinds to help clear the burrs of coffee dust, as it seems to build up in there after a couple of uses. I like that the hopper is smoke colored to prevent light damage to your beans, but of course it isn't air tight, so don't store them in their long term. All in all a great grinder for the amateur home barista without having to take out a loan or build an expansion to fit it.
Great grind for a great price
October 2, 2016
This is a great burr grinder that does the job as described. There are two problems with it: you have to wait around while it grinds because there ins't a timer setting to let it go for 30 seconds, which is something that my old burr grinder did well. Something that it has in common with my old grinder is also that it makes a complete mess and is hard to clean. I don't know if that is just standard in these grinders, or if you can get one that doesn't make a mess. Despite these minor flaws, I'd still recommend this as it is probably the best quality grind you'll get for the price
Great for a novice who wants an entry level grinder!
October 8, 2015
When I first saw the box this came in, I thought it might be a knockoff because the box was rather cheap looking. I still don't know, because I've never owned another burr grinder. When I make coffee with it though, the experience varies every time. The different settings seem to work, but I do get a somewhat inconsistent grind unless I set it more toward the espresso settings (about 17 or less). I do get a rather bitter brew with my Chemex (with Chemex filters) unless I use the higher settings, but since I'm a coffee novice, it's very possible the problem is with my technique and not with the grinder. This thing does make a mess when taking the coffee out, because some grinds will stick above the bin only to fall out when you remove the bin. I'm not disappointed with this purchase by any means, but this grinder is only one piece of the puzzle towards making great coffee! If you're on a budget and enjoy the adventure of becoming a home barista, this may be a great entry level grinder for you.
What I don't like: 1
September 23, 2014
OK, some of this is my own fault for not reading the specs close enough. What I don't like:1. No grind timer, I have to hold my finger down on the button until the beans are finished. Should have seen this in my initial research, but I missed it.2. Messy. Frankly, I have come to the conclusion that if I am going to grind my own beans, I will have to put up with the mess. But on this sometimes grounds continue to fall after I have removed the container, no matter how hard I shake or tap the machine. What I do like:1. Grind quality. I use a french press and the amount of sediment is significantly less than my cuisinart grinder. I am getting a very consistent grind from this machine.2. Construction. Well built, and very solid.3. Noise. Much less than my last two grinders and slower grind speed as well which translates to a better grind.I
A good entry level electronic burr grinder
April 17, 2014
After six months with the Encore it is time to do a review.Pros:-Good entry level grinder with relatively few fines-Grinds more than fine enough for my Aeropress and has enough course adjustment for the French Press with decent grind size consistency.-Very quick motor can take down 40g(the amount I use most often for my chemex/fenchpress) of coffee in less than 20 seconds-Easy to use and dial in, nice big rotating on/off switch on the side-Beats a hand grinder any dayCons:-It's messy. All fresh coffee beans have a certain amount of chaff within the bean. The encore does a great job of separating thischaff from the ground beans. However afterwards it usually shoots the chaff all over the counter once you take out the grinds hopper. The bean hopper and burrs are also not directly over the grinds hopper so both chaff and grinds will get stuck in the shoot which if you are not careful about cleaning can lead to old grinds in your coffee. Expect to clean up after every use.-It's LOUD! I brought the grinder over to my parents house while I was staying there for a time and they complained that the grinder woke them up every morning. They have a very large house. I thought they were just being bitchy until I brought the grinder back to my apartment. My neighbor started coming over for coffee in the morning after the grinder would wake him up in his apartment above mine. Do not expect a quiet grind.-If you grind a lot of coffee (100+grams) keep an eye on the grinds hopper as it has a tendency to work its way out of the grinder-Still an entry level grinder, do not expect to be able to dial in proper espresso shots with the EncoreSummary: It's a good grinder for all of your drip/pour over/press coffee needs but its messy and noisy

Best inexpensive burr grinder...now with a metal copper body!

I bought this as a replacement for a previous Bodum Burr Grinder that I got in 2011. I used that grinder upwards 4 -5 times a day, it still worked but the burrs are getting dull and the front plastic piece that holds the grinds catcher snapped off.

Obviously with such good results I went with another Bodum grinder, this time I opted for the Copper (aluminum body copper colored) over the Rubberized Black one that I have previously. The rubberized body is quit impossible to keep clean everything stuck to it and I had to end up covering with a huge zip-loc bag to keep it from looking like a lint brush :/
I'm not sure if it's becuase it's newer, the metal body, or some kinda of revision...this new copper model is a lot quieter and seems they have sped it up a bit over the first model I had. I always worry if the grinder is too fast it could scorch the beans but so far, so good. I do also notice more static over my old model, so after grinding I don't pull the catcher out immediately. Being glass I wasn't expecting so much static, my old one didn't do this.

The Bad: Even though this has a metal body, the bottom and most import part is still cheapy plastic..I'm not sure what they where thinking with this design. Obviously if someone is paying more for a metal body they want durability.
I just worry about it breaking in the future like my previous Bodum, I still used it for last year and a half 2 years just had to keep taping the bottom back together.
Great coffee grinder

Excellent grind very very uniform on whichever level u select, hopper fits alot of beans an the lid provides a nice seal to act as a storage unit for the beans also if u wana leave some inside so u dont have to keep pouring beans in everytime just leave them in the hopper if u prefer (i do not) and just set ur timer once uve figured out how many cups ea time provides ( aprox 13sec for 3 cups) and ur allset. The glass receiver is a nice touch and much prefered over plastic that comes with allmost every other grinder, it dosnt totaly eliminate static but its very minimal just a lil bit of powder along the sides of the glass which is easily tapped down but deff no powder flying around or flying out of the jar making a mess so u dont have to worry about that like with some other grinders u have powder flying out of the receiver theres so much static not with this one the jar is desighned pretty good i must say and has a rubber top that helps just handle the jar with care and dont drop because it will break its not super thick glass. Nice length cord and underneath the machine has a system to keep it wrapped nicely so ur able to just let out the exact amount of cord you need. Now my biggest complaint is the base of the grinder could of been designed better it is not very sturdy or solid and tends to wiggle if you move the unit with your hands which isnt a huge deal because it just sits on the counter and its not like it moves while its grinding or anything just when ur physically handling it which makes it feel kind of umm cheap maby is the word or just not very solid especially if the cord isnt placed in the slot thats carved out for it to run threw and the machind ends up sitting on the cord then its very wobbly so with that said the base could of been designed better maby with wider pegs for it to stand on. All in all im very happy for the price with this unit an would highly recommend i give it 4.5 stars!
Good small grinder.
March 31, 2017
This puppy grinds well, per your setting, and grinds cleanly with no mess. There is I feel a defect that keeps it from being perfect. The maximum time setting is 20 seconds. This is only enough for 3 scoops of coffee beans, enough for one big mug of 12-16 ounces or 2 smaller cups of 6 - 8 ounces each. Grinding a lot of coffee beans would take a long time given the warning to let it cool. The guide embedded in the cover for quantities would only hold true for a very weak brew. It is not realistic. Also, the resevoir for holding the beans is small.
This is less a problem for me as I rarely grind for more than 2 cups anyway. If you bear these limitations in mind this is a good grinder.
Excellent grinder for French press coffee
January 24, 2017
I recommend this conical burr grinder if you like French press coffee. The coarse settings are excellent, and you will get very little sediment with the French press. Here is a hint: darker roasts tend to fragment more than lighter ones. To compensate for this, I use the coarsest setting (with the French press symbol) for French roast beans, and the fourth most coarse setting for lightly roasted beans, Medium and full city roasts will do best with settings in between. Also, follow the brewing instructions on Bodum's website: 7 grams of coffee to every 4 oz. water. Steep for 4 minutes before pressing. Stirring is unnecessary. I recommend an electric kettle that brings the water to 200 degrees F. The right grind is critical for brewing outstanding French press coffee, and this machine delivers it. There are several conical grinders on the market that do not grind coarse enough for French press (and a few are quite expensive).

I've had less success in grinding for certain drip methods with this machine, and would not recommend this mill at all for espresso brewing (it does work well for moka pot/stovetop espresso, though).

One other thing I really appreciate about the Bistro is the relative lack of static and flying grounds.

Worth the money if you like French press coffee.
Good value for the money, IMO

Happy so far with performance given the price of the grinder. I know I spent less than $70 for the unit, so I don't expect it to live up to the standards of a $200-$300 grinder. Grind is more uniform that I had anticipated. Given the plastic gears, I can't expect it to last more than a year of daily use. At it's price point, I'm completely okay with getting ~365 uses from it before it wears out. Others may not have the same perspective on a grinder and longevity. The container glass isn't completely static-free, but holds static of grounds far less than other containers I've used. Overall, very happy with my purchase (after three weeks' use with this grinder).

Clogs Up Far Too Often For My Taste
April 2, 2017
The Baratza seems to be a much better grinder than my old Cusinart. Seems, because while it has a much more consistent grind it creates much less static and therefore fewer coffee grounds shooting all over the counter, it cannot handle dark roast coffee very well. Just before writing this I was cleaning my Baratza for the third time since I purchased it a month or so ago. I don't think I had to clean my Cusinart that many times in the 15 or more years I used it.I follow all the directions, have watched the videos, and do not overload the hopper which can cause grounds to rise to a level that blocks the drop chute from the burrs. Even the need for cleaning might not be so bad if the Baratza was easy to clean. Unfortunately, dark roast coffee clogs the base of the lower burr and the chute through which the grounds are supposed to fall into the cup underneath has a sharp angle in it that is very difficult to clean out.Would I buy another Baratza Encore... NO, unless some significant design changes were made. Would I recommend it to a friend... PROBABLY NOT, unless they only preferred medium to light roast coffee and used an Encore a few times before purchasing it.
Not sure how to write this without either sounding overly ...
November 26, 2016
Not sure how to write this without either sounding overly negative or overly positive. The Baratza Encore grinder does grind the coffee beans adequately but only at the expense of a deafening noise that almost requires you to take it out into the garage. Then even after grinding the beans the ground coffee goes into a plastic hopper that through static electricity sticks to the sides and ends up getting all over. It has an industrial strength cord that depending on your coffee maker electric cord can make it appear as if you have a shop facility in your kitchen. For $129 I wouldn't buy it again. It does the job but not well enough to over come its other shortcomings.
Not happy
November 19, 2015
Have owned this item about 8 months. It worked well in the beginning and ground our coffee with no issues. I use it about once every 2 or 3 weeks to grind one hopper-ful of regular and one decaf. Recently, after putting the beans in the hopper, the mechanism would not grind. I have had to pour out the beans, take it apart and reassemble, then turn the grind size to a much lower number to engage the grinding assembly. This unit is difficult to clean as the ground coffee packs into the small space around the burr grinders, it seems the heat generated causes them to compact and become hard. I'm looking for another grinder that perhaps will not give us these issues.
Fantastic grinder that is slow and loud.
January 26, 2015
I was torn between this grinder and another conical Burr grinder for $99 that advertised "low noise". I liked the shape of this one better so went for it despite the $30 extra price assuming all high-end grinder had low noise. Overall I enjoy the quality of this grinder, it def grinds a great cup. However I can only give it three stars because:1) It is so incredibly loud. It sounds like a construction site while its grinding. I bought the grinder for an office environment and no calls can be made while its on.2) Which brings it to the second detractor: This grinder is incredibly slow. It takes 10's of seconds to grind 2-3 cups worth of beans.I am coming from using a $20 Krups blade grinder, that while loud, can grind your beans in seconds flat. I realize that these blades get hot and do bad things to your beans but am not completely satisfied with this "step up". I was assuming more for a quality grinder. I will wait an additional 30-40 seconds for a better grind but I expected at least better sound proofing.
Works fine for espresso but may require inspection and calibration
December 16, 2014
This grinder actually works well for Espresso. At least it grinds perfectly fine for my Breville Cafe Roma. I had been using a crappy grinder that I bought at Target for years and suffered with poor quality espresso (often containing coffee grounds in it) due to poor consistency in texture produced by that grinder, which used a blade to grind coffee. To be fair, it took me some time to calibrate this thing, but once I got it figured out, I was able to make some really great espresso.I had trouble with being unable to grind anything under the 10 setting and per the manual Epsresso requires 2-8. I did some research online and followed the helpful youtube video here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JyQ_AywdBRQAfter performing the steps outlined in the video, I determined that my grinder was set to the fine setting and probably didn't even make sense to use the lower levels. I have no clue why it was set this way in the factory but am able to make great espresso with it set on 12. I got to this setting after some trial and error. If you do buy this grinder, be ready to double check the calibration in terms of speed and how fine the grind is. Also, please read the manual and watch the YouTube videos. It's a fine (albeit somewhat budget) piece of equipment and requires some extra legwork to get working.I probably would have given it 4 stars, but there was a crack in one of the pieces received in shipping and it did require a little bit extra work, so it's difficult to give it a great review. Nonetheless, if you don't want to spend a small fortune, want to grind your own Espresso, and don't mind some tinkering, then this is not a bad grinder.
It gets the basic job done
September 16, 2014
You know, I shouldn't complain because this grinder meets my basic needs--a good grind of good coffee. But there are annoyances. First, the grinder is louder than I'd like--at least for an office environment. Second, it takes 45 seconds to do grind enough for a medium strength pot of coffee. I have a Bodum Bistro at home that can do it in half as much time. Finally, the coffee chaff is very difficult to contain, even in above average humidity. Having already spent the money on this grinder, and because it gets the basic job done, I keep it and try to be thankful for it.

Good for a few months....
May 22, 2017
I like the look, size, and glass catch. Unfortunately I cannot say the same about its longevity. Bought this December 2016, and have used it relatively lightly since purchase.... 20 second cycles one or two times a day with regular thorough cleaning. Last week it started making this horrible sound. I emptied the beans and took the hopper off only to find coffee beans jammed between the burrs. Got them out, cleaned the unit, put the hopper back on with some beans, ran it for 5 seconds and it happened again. Cleared it, set it to a more coarse grind, happened again. It was great for the few months that it worked, unfortunately it didn't work long enough and now I'm in the market for another grinder.
It's still going strong and we like it relatively well aside from a few issues noted ...
April 23, 2017
We purchased this coffee grinder 3 1/2 years ago. It's still going strong and we like it relatively well aside from a few issues noted below. I did a lot of research on grinders and review-reading before choosing this one, but it was our first higher-end burr grinder so in all fairness I can't compare it to others. Part of why I chose this one is because our french press is also Bodum.

Static is a significant issue in the cup after grinding, which makes removal of the cup and removal of the ground coffee a bit messy. We bought a small cosmetic (blush) brush that we use only for the purpose of brushing our grounds out of the cup. Just a drop of water on the brush makes coffee ground removal fairly clean and easy.

The only performance issue after daily use is that while using it on largest grind/french press setting (for us that is always), the bean vessel begins to vibrate and rotate clockwise which stops the grinding (it's also how you remove the vessel). That is, the motor/timer is still running, but the beans are no longer grinding and you lose track of how much you have/need. So, we have to place our hand on top of it now to hold it steady to keep it from turning past french press on the furthest end of the grind range.

My only other complaint would stand for any other grinders that I am aware of, at that is regarding the clear bean vessel; I wonder why they don't make the vessel at least a smoke brown or grey color so the beans are not subjected to quite as much light.

I have recommended this grinder before because I suppose it has done alright with daily use. If I were to buy another, I would research more and might be inclined to purchase something else.
the quality of the grind is good. PROs
January 20, 2017
After doing some research on burr grinders I went with middle of the road. I know that having fresh ground coffee makes a huge difference is the taste of your coffee. I wouldn't buy this one again for a few of the simple cons stated below. Yet, the quality of the grind is good.
PROs: Grinds great. Took a little time to figure out the right grind but does a good job.
CONs: Timer stopped working correctly after a couple months. Glass jar is NOT static free. Messy around the grinder because of static. A bit loud.

***UPDATE 4/8/2017***
I use this everyday. It is slowly going downhill. It is not grinding as long as the timer says. I have to keep pressing the grind button 4-5 times to get 7 tablespoons of grounds. I have cleaned it twice and each time it has seemed to get worse.

I have sent 2 emails to Bodum and have not heard back yet.
The new one is not as sturdy and you have to wait 5 minutes between grinds
September 23, 2016
We bought this one to replace an older model which we used for probably l5 years. The new one is not as sturdy and you have to wait 5 minutes between grinds. The cup causes the grinds to adhere to the rubber top and the sides and is messy when you remove them from the grinder portion the grounds go all over the place.
Seemingly easy to use and clean, but durability is an issue

Bodum Bistro Electric Burr Coffee Grinder, BlackJust arrived and I've used it to make several cups of coffee. First impressions: Ridiculously easy to use and clean, grinds perfectly, looks nice, no static electricity issue, no mess. Even better I got it as an Amazon Warehouse Deal for $20 less than if I bought it "new" from Amazon.Update: I originally gave this 5 stars, but am now downgrading my rating. After a month, the glass container fractured at the bottom. I did not drop it. Just happened from normal use. I read some other complaints about this happening and so it seemed the glass was either too thin at the base or too brittle. Unfortunately, the warranty does not cover glass breakage. Bodum, however, does sell replacements which, with tax and shipping, runs over $16. This did not seem right to me where I did nothing and the glass broke on it's own. I contacted Bodum, but they ignored my claim that there was a product defect and dismissed my request for a free replacement as not covered by the warranty. So much for valuing happy customers! I decided against buying a new container as there was no reason to believe another would not also fail.Luckily, however, one of the Amazon purchasers who had this problem had another better solution - a Tablecraft (H159) 10 oz Stainless Steel Dredge - sold here on Amazon for $5. Just remove the cover of the Dredge and substitute the cover from the Bodum container. Everything fits perfectly and there is no static electricity. The stainless steel must discharge the static electricity. It's such an easy durable fix that I wonder why all grinders aren't made like this to begin with.

would not recommend this grinder
April 3, 2017
* It lasted just under a year before the motor stopped functioning.* The grind size has always been uneven .* Since day one, it has created a mess whenever I use it... I just can't remove the ground coffee bin without getting grounds all over the counter top. I have tried various techniques like tapping on the bin before I take it out... that helps a little, but it's still a daily annoyance. I didn't have this problem with my last grinder... so it's at least possible to design a grinder without this issue.* They have reasonable prices for service parts on their website and they have instructions available for replacing almost everything, that's worth an extra star to me.* I would not recommend this grinder.
Doesnt hold up under daily home use.
February 3, 2017
Worked very well but the motor died in less than six months. Baratza customer service was friendly and quick and they replaced it within a few days. The replacement lasted a month. I grind enough beans for an 8 cup chemex pot every morning. That doesn't seem like over use. I'd hesitate before buying again.
... my second home grinder and I wanted to really like this. While it grinds reasonably well
December 8, 2016
This is my second home grinder and I wanted to really like this. While it grinds reasonably well, there are a couple things that would cause me not to purchase again. One, there are 30 grind settings and I've had to go all the way down to 3 or 4 to get grind fine enough for a good espresso pull. And this is even though the directions that come with the machine suggest 8, which was way to coarse for a good thick espresso crema. Second, I have to take this apart after every grind and reclean it as so much gets trapped thoughout the grind mechanisms. Lastly, it is a bit of a mess with grind always spilling around the ground coffee bin. So I'm still looking for a good home espresso grinder for less than $300. I'm open to any recommendations.
Messy machine, hard to clean, kinda grinds beans
June 24, 2016
This was my first step into the world of burr grinders, and having done a fair bit of research, I finally upgraded from a cheap $15 blade grinder to a $130 burr. I expected a major move forward. Now, I'm just not sure. I fully understand that the Encore is middle of the pack in home burr grinders, and I shouldn't expect $3,000 grinder results, but in the first few batches I found the grounds to be quite inconsistent on all of the course settings. With tilting the blade grinder I used to use, I could get very close to the same level of inconsistency. But my biggest issue is that this thing is filthy. Grounds get stuck in the shoot like crazy, a ring stays around the burrs, opening the grounds compartment sprinkles them all over the base of the machine. After the first cup of beans I ground and threw away per the quick start instructions, I wanted to get all remnants of those beans out of there so I could start grinding much nicer beans. That was easier said than done. About 10 minutes later, folder paper towels crammed into a collection of crevices to clean out remaining grounds, and a series of tilts and thumps on the machine to rain out probably as much as a teaspoon of "stuck" grounds in various parts of the machine, I cringed to think of what the process will be each time to grind a new type of bean. It's going to inevitably end up being bits and pieces of old coffee, mixed with the new batches. It rains out grounds so excessively, that I actually have the machine sitting on a paper towel so I can more easily clean up the grounds that would be all over the counter otherwise. The one shining light is that in a french press pour, I did think the cup tasted better than previous efforts with blade ground coffee but $115 better? Ehh...no. I'll give it a few more grinds, and do some finer grinding for drop coffee too, but what started as me anxiously awaiting the product and taking a step up in home roasting and brewing, turned out to a pretty large, bitter, cup of buyer's remorse.
Breaks every year...
August 15, 2015
I bought this grinder in November, 2013 (an Amazon purchase) and it breaks annually almost like clockwork. Lucky (or not?) the first time was just prior to the expiration of the warranty when the unit just stopped working. Suspect the switch failed. The company replaced it with a remanufactured grinder and it has been almost a year since and the replacement grinder has failed. It has a loud knocking/hammering sound and vibration coming from the unit. I have contacted Baratza to see if they will replace the grinder since the replacement unit failed within one year. I am waiting to get their decision. In any case, I will not be buying another Baratza product given the reliability record that I've experienced.
does the job but very messy
February 23, 2014
It's very slow compared to the ones you can use for free when you buy your coffee and I was very surprised at the huge mess it makes. It creates static and the coffee grounds dance in the air and cover the counter and floor every time you use it. over priced for the plastic body and simple aluminum burr. I bought it because the $50 less and higher rated model was out of stock. I like that it has both pulse and continuous on switch but the mess is a deal breaker may have to return it.

A great value on an espresso-quality grinder - - maybe not.....
July 3, 2017
I needed a second grinder for decaf beans for my espresso maker. My main grinder is a commercial-grade La Pavoni. I make espresso every day and appreciate the importance of properly ground coffee. However, changing beans from caf to decaf and then the reverse in my La Pavoni is a hassle and wastes coffee in the process. I shopped for a grinder that could do a good job without spending big bucks. I didn't think that would be possible until I tried this grinder. I can produce a beautiful shot of espresso, rich with crema. I'm very happy with this machine.

ONE MONTH LATER
After about 20 espresso grinds, the grinder was almost completely plugged. I was using Starbucks Decaf Espresso. I emailed the maker and they advised me to clean the machine after every use. Really?? I clean my La Pavoni about once a year and that's just because I think I should. It never plugs and works flawlessly even though it's probably 15 years old.

MY ADVICE:
If you want to grind for your espresso maker, spend a few more dollars for a better machine.
This is Our third Bodum Grinder of this type. ...
February 21, 2017
This is Our third Bodum Grinder of this type. However, We noticed it wasn't working immediately after starting to use it last month. No matter what the setting it ground the beans very coarse. It also ground too many beans within the timer setting waisting much coffee. The rating is as much for the fact that We can not return it or replace it than the malfunction of the product.
Bodum sells a flawed product and does not sell replacement parts, pass on this grinder.
February 11, 2017
Alright, so on the surface this is a nice little grinder with the features you've all been told to look for but the plastic internals and lack of replacement parts make this thing a dud. The death of mine ended up being the *plastic* retaining ring for the metal burrs, Bodum *does not* offer a replacment for this part, making my $75 grinder a paperweight. I hate having to throw things like this out and luckily someone on thingiverse has listed a file to print a replacement part, hopefully I can squeeze a few more months out of this thing before the plastic internals give up.
Amazing design and functionality, but horrible choice of materials.
October 3, 2015
Amazing design and functionality, but horrible and bizarre choice of materials. I absolutely love the way this grinder works; it gives you the ability to adjust coarseness as well as the quantity that it grinds. And all the while, it even looks cool on your countertop. BUT!!! After about two years, the black casing and round lid turned soft and sticky; So much so that I can almost dig into it with my fingernail. While that's just sort of weird and slightly annoying, the bigger net result is that coffee grounds and general grime stick to it and it's virtually impossible to clean (which is definitely not a good arrangement for a device that tends constantly be around something as insidious as finely ground espresso!). As I say, it's really just sort of bizarre. I love industrial design and pay attention to details, yet I've never seen this kind of plastic used in any application. If I had known this before my purchase, I would have chosen another brand and model.
Bodum worked great, but Not Durable
January 23, 2012
Purchased this nice unit in November 2011, and am returning it today for a refund. It stopped grinding suddenly and I noticed as burning plastic smell from the unit.

It is unfortunate, as I was touting the benefits of this grinder which produced a very fine espresso grind, which was contrary to some reviews that almost prevented me from purchasing the machine initially. While it worked, it served as seemingly cost efficient way to produce an excellent grind for a higher-end Italian Espresso machine.

All a long I knew that I probably needed a durable grinder that was at least in the $200 range, or more. And this was proven to be the case. So the day this one stopped working, I decided to buy another grinder. I bit the bullet (willingly) purchased a Breville Smart Grinder. I did not order it from Amazon, but purchased it from Sur La Table and paid the sales tax. Seems stupid, but actually the store provides a lifetime warranty; so for about $220 for the grinder I have a lifetime warranty to return the grinder for any reason. I found this to be important as this is the 3rd lower cost burr grinder that stopped working shortly after purchase (including Capresso and Cuisinart brands).

The Bodum Bistro was a great unit while it worked, but was just not durable enough.

Has never really worked as advertised.
November 3, 2017
First of all, I was missing pieces in the initial shipment. I had to reach out directly to the manufacturer to get the additional parts to even operate the thing.Once everything was finally put together, it kept getting worst. The burr never really fit as snug as it should. This resulted in many clogs, as the beans would find their way under the grinder components, and throw off the alignment. As of now, I can't event grind for more than a few seconds without the burr popping off and spinning with no grind action. It has been a real headache, and I wish I would have went with a different option.

UPDATE: After 14 months, this coffee grinder stopped working. It will not turn on. Please save your money.I've had this product for almost a year and while it does a good job grinding coffee beans, every time you take the plastic grounds bin out it sprays coffee grounds all over the kitchen counter. I would not buy again.

JUNK!!!!!!!!! Why does Baratza have so much repair information on their web site? Because this unit is junk!Operated fine for about two weeks. then electrical problems. I watched all of the repair videos and took the unit apart. it will not run without tapping on the motor. I also discovered many others on the internet with the same experience. Why does a unit in this price range have basic electrical problems? Now I must send it back for repair. Not what I expected from what is being sold as one of the better burr grinders in its class. I would give it a zero if I could.

An expensive piece of garbage
June 28, 2017
If you review the questions on this product, you will see that there is a question about the Bodum Bistro Grinder quitting grinding after just a few seconds of use. The company handles this little inconvenience by referring to stones "accidentally" occurring in the grinding process. Well, all the coffee beans I buy must be composed of 50% stones because I have yet to get through a twenty-second (or even a ten-second) cycle without those pesky stones–which I have yet to identify, by the way–stalling the grinder. With tax I spent around $70 on this machine. I notice that today it is on sale for $93 and change. Save yourself money and much frustration; don't get ripped off.

DEAD AFTER ABOUT 10 USES
June 5, 2016
Received in December 2015 and have MAYBE used it 8-10 times and the inner grinding ring became lodged inside after a 15 second grinding session and was difficult to remove, but after eventually being carefully removed, it now will not fit back inside the grooves and the entire unit is useless???? I decided to try to turn it on and try a 5 second spin to perhaps get things aligned or something, but it will not even work? The red power button lights up, however pressing the smaller top grind button does nothing and will not grind now? This is ridiculous for the amount of money it cost and such hassle involved. Just contacted Bodum, we shall see if they even do anything about it, I read the last page in their manual in fine print and it is saying something about a "guarantee certificate" needing to be completed at time of purchase and how it is required for any guarantee service......you know, duh, who doesn't sit down with the fake little diplomas that come with products and fill out and drive to the post office to buy a stamp and mail out the day you open it. That is something every responsible consumer does and shame on you if you don't. I'm sure they don't say this because they assume "normal" people with lives disregard this all together and would carelessly toss out all the erroneous junk mail which ships with products these days. Will report back on their customer service and whether or not they lost me and countless others as customers for life.

UPDATE: Bodum did offer to replace this unit about a day later after it broke, very nice company ;)

Purchased July of 2013, didn't even last for 2 yrs. Main drive gear shattered, see image. All drive gears are plastic when they should be metal,(preferably high quality metal !), especially for an appliance that costs over $100. Operated for 10 seconds per day x 610 days equates to ONLY 1.69 total hours of use. Corporate greed strikes again.
BEWARE! Plastic gears between motor & burr
March 2, 2013
I will say that I loved the grinder while it worked. Consistent grinds, and the glass container was less static-y than some others I've used with plastic containers.

After about 14 months (not even being used every day, maybe 5-6 grinds a week), one of the plastic drive gears broke. See my picture above. It started making a horrible noise, then bits of the gear fell out on to my counter.

Bodum does not sell replacement parts, so in the trash it goes. I tried emailing their US support & they never responded.

The Encore is lauded by coffee experts as THE go-to entry level grinder for those brewing coffee at home. The Encore gives a great grind for drip/manual brew and also grinds fine enough for espresso.

Featuring 40 individual grind settings, from fine to coarse, the Encore can please any palate with its gamut of accurate and repeatable grind settings. The Encore has an accurate medium to coarse grind for the increasingly popular manual brew methods such as pour-over, Aeropress, Siphon and Chemex.

The efficient DC motor keeps your beans cool, even during extended grind times, while a combination of electric and gear speed reducers slow the burr to 450 RPM, ensuring a smooth bean feed and reducing noise, heat and static buildup.

A convenient, front-mounted pulse button makes it easy to grind on demand into your brew basket. Whether you are looking for an espresso grinder or a grinder to help you explore that extensive range of brew methods, the Encore is a great all around home grinder.
