A solid workhorse for development
June 6, 2015
I purchased this laptop for work based on the reviews from software developers and I agree with the bulk of reviews from dev's, the Lenovo Y50 is an excellent platform for development work. The 4k screen takes some getting used, some legacy software won't play nice with it (Visio 2007 product key dialog box is absurdly small and un-sizable, haven't figured out a work-around for that yet) but most of my software installed and run without issue. Bootup time is mere seconds! with 16gigs of memory I can work with Visual Studio, SQL BI Stack, Photoshop, an instance each of all major browsers and a half dozen smaller programs all up and running with no issues or performance concerns. As mentioned previously, the case is a fingerprint magnet, and the glossy screen is susceptible to glare. I turned off all of the Windows 8 touch-screen and "charms", I couldn't think of a good reason to smear fingerprints on my screen when I have the use of a solid Logitech Anywhere MX mouse. Battery life seems to hover around 4 hours, the monitoring software for power consumption is pretty good. I love the back-lit keyboard, can't say enough good things about that minor detail as I often work in low-light conditions. I've only had my Lenovo for about a month now but at this point I have no major complaints and nothing but good things to say about it.
All I expected, better really.
February 24, 2015
While I purchased this because of the overall good review history of the unit, I was a little concerned by some of the negatives. This product is absolutely phenomenal and completely met my expectations. The performance is great and the design is elegant and sophisticated and not toonish like so many "gaming" systems. Well done on packing so much into such a nice package Lenovo.

Let's address some of those negative reviews out there. To try to compare to systems that cost many hundreds more and say the screen doesn't scale as well, or that the track pad isn't as good is really picking nits. For those that thought there was a lot of bloatware, all I can say is HUH? I support the IT for dozens of companies and purchase and install hundreds of PCs a year. This laptop has far less junk software than corporate systems like HP EliteBooks and Dell Latitudes. That's saying an awful lot for what is basically a mid-tier consumer system.

If I were to have any complaint, it's actually with Lenovo themselves. I'm always disappointed when I look to Amazon or other providers and find them able to sell products for less than I'm able to get them from wholesale. Way to step all over your channel Lenovo.
Sleek, great audio/visual, best bang for your buck.
February 18, 2015
I was looking for a laptop for school, light gaming, and music. The speakers on this thing are fantastic for a laptop. I had 1,000 dollars to spend and this was the best bang for the buck. I love this machine. The touchscreen works great, audio is great, 4k display is good when you can use it. The backlight keyboard and sleek design make it all the more appealing. People tell me all the time "That must have cost a fortune". It's beautiful and just what I needed.
I can't believe the great deal we got
February 1, 2015
I can't believe the great deal we got. I had a Lenovo precursor to this laptop, which I also loved. A third-party Amazon seller popped onto my radar with a fantastic price on the same day my wife's old HP died for good. I had to recommend the Lenovo to her. Now we're doubled up on Lenovo laptops, which we use for business, design work, photo collection, personal use, and some gaming. Love the speed, resolution, and capacity.
Dont get it as a sole gaming laptop.
January 28, 2015
Even though the Y50 series is being called as the Gaming Series, the UHD versions are more of development/productive/entertainment laptops then a gaming laptops. These UHD displays are locked at 48FPS and there is no way you will get more out of them (this is a hardware restriction) hence gamers who need that 60FPS will be disappointed. But it sure packs a punch with top class specs and can run almost anything you throw at it. If few software look tiny because of the 4K display, its the problem with the software and not with the laptop.Overall this is an awesome laptop if with versatile functions.

Most of the reports i see here relates to some yelloish tint which i dont face. I agreed with the touch pad though. It could have been better but its not that bad.

I am more of a console person and hence the only game i played was Injustice gods among us which ran without any problem. Also Lightroom has no problem running on this laptop.

Pro:
1. 4K Display, 16GB Ram, CPU, GTX 860M
2. Lenovo did a good job of not blotting with crappy software. Nice and clean.
3.Design
4. AC wifi
4. I got this from a seller called Dealfish and it was without any tax! this saves almost 50 to 60 bucks.

Con:
1. 48FPS Max
2. Touch pad (not really a con, just could be better)
3. Weight

A very good laptop with known issues
December 14, 2015
Writing this review after more than 9 months of use. I will focus on the problems that this laptop, most definitely, does have.

HINGE:
*All of the complaints about the laptop hinge/"screen" breaking are true. It does present a factory problem, no matter how much you "baby" this laptop, _it.will.break_. Don't be fooled thinking that yours won't have it, because it will. Sorry, but that's the way is, and always has been with this version of this laptop...

*Having that said, it is not extremely complicated to fix, as just loosening the left hinge will solve the problem. That's it, really.

SCREEN:
*The yellow representation is indeed not good, it's much darker. Some calibration configurations exists, which does correct to some extent, but definitely does not "solve" the problem. Therefore this laptop with the default panel is not recommended for designers/photographers/etc, or any kind of use which NEEDS accurate color reproduction. This might hamper your online shopping ("I thought the purse was orange, not bright yellow!!!")

*This panel is not 60hz. You wouldn't notice the difference unless you run a program that needs many fps. So I recommend it for those who are not FPS/pro gamers or don't explicitly need higher than 48 hz/fps.

BATTERY:
*Just for further clarification or confirmation, whichever meets your criteria: In all these months, very rarely this laptop has lasted me more than 3 hours on battery. The upside is that its capacity has not degraded over these 11 months

Overall I rate it 4 stars because:
* Its specs are really good, even almost a year later
* It's well made, but not "macbook pro" made, and has good cooling. This is not one of those laptops that have excellent specs but very poor chassis
* Its price. Just $999 (thanks, FishDealer!!!)

But:
Definitely has all the aforementioned problems

Do think twice before buying this laptop. If you accept its deficiencies, and are willing to open the laptop to loosen the left hinge, you will get one of the best values on the market. Otherwise, consider buying another one. My suggestion is the ASUS ROG GL552VW-DH71, which is very similar,
The display is GORGEOUS but true yellows are rendered horribly. Bright yellow looks mustardy
December 10, 2015
The display is GORGEOUS but true yellows are rendered horribly. Bright yellow looks mustardy. Some programs freak out over such a high resolution display and are almost unusable due to everything being so small. If you use Photoshop, be prepared to not have a good time unless you have a high enough version that allows you to 2x the display. It's still too small to do detail work without zooming way in. I'm one of the enemies and a good part of my income is creating banner ads. Working with photos isn't a problem because you can zoom in and not lose quality. Working with a 150x150 ad is a pain because I have to zoom WAY in then zoom out to check my work. It's not a great situation when you have to work with small graphics. I bought this to have something beefier for work but end up using my old Satellite 99% of the time due to the Photoshop issue. The Y50 became my entertainment machine and it's much better suited for that. I didn't really want an entertainment machine but now I have one and do enjoy watching videos on it. My son loves to play Minecraft on it as well.

The track pad is GARBAGE and is almost unusable even for web browsing and basic tasks that don't require a lot of precision. It's jumpy, very sensitive, and erratic. Be prepared to always have a mouse with you if you buy a Y50. It's every bit as bad as others have said. When I bought mine I figured I would get used to it and all would be well. I've had it 8 months and it still infuriates me when I have to use the track pad despite messing with settings dozens of times.

It's not light but is built like a tank. Obviously the red backlit keyboard is super cool. It's a very good looking laptop.
Touch screen is sensitive to the tiniest specs.
October 14, 2015
I first tried upgrading to Windows 10 Enterprise, but it left a Windows.old folder I couldn't delete which was using too mush disk space.
So I wiped the HD and installed Windows 10 Enterprise from scratch, seemed to be working like a charm.
2nd day I had a round circle always on the screen with a mouse cursor in it and touch pad was giving me jumpy behavior and a second mouse cursor ... it acted like I had a finger touching the screen in that spot all the time.
I had to disable the touch screen driver to get it to go away and then it ran smoothly.
Upgraded all drivers, and it came back the same when re-enabled.
3rd day it was working fine again without any issues ... which I thought was very strange.
I finally discovered an almost un-seeable speck on the touch screen, can only see when screen off and at angle to get reflected light, in the exact spot I was getting the issue. I'd been eating an apple during the setup the day before and assume it was a spec of juice that sprayed on it.
I cleaned it with a safe cleanser and assume that was the cause of the phantom finger press.
So be VERY careful to keep the screen clean.
I have had it for like a week from now
January 27, 2015
I have had it for like a week from now.

Cons:
reflection of the screen, The mirror like screen have too much reflection and I can always see myself.
yellow a bit off, I haven't check it with any software, from my experience it is more like mustard yellow.
scaling issues, that is common for any windows user with high resolution, Win 8.1 OS came with the laptop and I found scaling is pretty bad, then I upgrade to Win 10 preview. Everything seems fine now.

I have played Evil within for 8 hours with HD and low setting and it went pretty well.
About refresh rate, that does not bother me at all. 48 fps is enough for me.
Besides that, everything is close to my expectation. I love the smooth feeling of fonts and icons after changing from a sub-HD laptop for years.
Best bang for the bucks.

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!Update after 18 months of usage.

The hinge problem occur like about 2 weeks ago. Same as many others, the left plastic cover is on the way of hinge rotation.

Actually, my hinge is all right. It is just once the plastic cover become loose, it is obstructing the motion of opening.

I have removed the cover and the problem is gone.

I will try to sandpaper the cover a bit and put it back on.

I suggest you remove the cover as soon as possible, since the obstruction is very likely to damage your hinge or screen.
Makes a good engineering / coding laptop - not such a great gaming laptop
January 21, 2015
The Y50 makes a good engineering / coding laptop due to the high resolution screen and powerful CPU/SSD/CUDA GPU and 16GB of RAM. The keyboard is excellent, and the touchscreen makes for a nice alternative to the (rather poor) trackpad in a pinch, if you don't have a mouse handy. Although it's advertised as a gaming laptop, some caveats make it less than optimal for this purpose. For one, the screen will only update at a maximum rate of 48 Hz, which means that your maximum framerate is limited to 48 FPS. This is true whether you are running at 4K resolution or 1080p. Also, the scaling tends to have problems for games, I have found that games will run in a tiny window in the middle of the screen (e.g. scaling will be disabled) unless you first set your desktop to 1080p before starting the game. While the video card is powerful, 4K gaming is basically out of the question except for 3 or 4 year old games. The screen also has some color issues, namely the yellow tends to come out as a brown/mustard color. This can be remedied to an extent by using color calibration (I'm using it with a Spyder3), but the overall gamut range is not very good. The feel of the laptop is good and it is relatively thin for the size, but the quality of the screen hinges are a bit suspect (people have reported hinges breaking after light usage), and the screen does not open and close very smoothly.

With that being said, the specs are excellent for the price. As of writing, any other laptop with an i7, SSD, and gaming quality card is at least $1200, and typically will not have an IPS touchscreen. If you have to multitask several engineering applications and work with a lot of text (or non-color sensitive applications) then this is a great machine. It is easily as functional as a "mobile workstation", but at a fraction of the cost. For gaming or color-sensitive applications such as graphic design, read the above caveats carefully and see if they are acceptable to you.

Got it on and pretty happy with it. Seems to cut down on glare and is keeping fingerprints off the screen. Had very few bubbles after install and they were easy to get out. I almost don't even know it is there. Wish it was just a tad larger so if you don't align it correctly at least it would go to the black border around the screen. I have it off a centimeter or two in one corner and that is the only spot I can notice I have a screen protector on.

Not all programs and apps are made with 4k in mind, so there has been some scaling issues from time to time.

October 18, 2015
This laptop functions nicely and I'll defer to the other reviews on its performance as they seem spot on. What I will discuss is the poor hinge design. The hinge mechanism is set too stiffly and the result is that it puts a great deal of load on the plastic components that attach the hinge to the top LCD cover and the upper cover on the bottom clamshell. Repeated opening and closing causes the parts to fatigue and break until the threaded inserts fall out. Replacement covers to fix this would cost anywhere from $250 to $350. I ended up repairing mine with epoxy. Hopefully it holds up until its time to replace this.

If you have one of these or are planning to get one, you can fix the hinge mechanism so that this problem is less likely to occur. The lower bezel under the screen can be removed relatively easily and is just a strip that goes across the bottom of the screen. It is thin, so be gentle. Once open, you'll be able to access the nuts that place the compressive load on the hinge mechanism. Adjusting this nut will increase or decrease the friction in the hinge. Using a 7mm wrench, just loosen both until the screen will open and close somewhat easily while being able to stay in the position you leave it. This will result in a lower load on the areas where I saw the fatigue damage. Can't say if this will fix the problem completely, but should at the very least, allow more open and close cycles before fatigue damage becomes apparent.

A nice benefit is that I can now open the laptop without having to hold the bottom down.

Awesome hardware, terrible screen
February 19, 2015
Great specs, fast. Screen is mediocre at best - while high resolution and bright, the "mustard yellow" issue is very real. Contrary to what most people are saying, it's not that the screen is *tinted* yellow. Rather anything that is supposed to be yellow (255,255,0) looks almost "radioactive green". It looks nothing like yellow. Due to this, most yellows, like the orange amazon buttons, look like mustard, but anything that is supposed to be full yellow - like highlighted searches in your browser, are nothing like yellow. Now if you don't need color accuracy, this can suffice. But you shouldn't be making that compromise on such an expensive machine.

January 17, 2015
Everything works perfectly except the the touch screen, in my case. Called Lenovo and they said it might be a driver problem. I was hoping it was, because that would be an easy fix. After following lenovo's instructions on fixing it, the issue presented itself again the next day. Thinking of returning it or exchanging it soon. Other than that, for the price, this laptop is top notch. Great screen resolution, fast ssd, good graphics, awesome keyboard, and awesome chassi design. Oh and I got it in 2 days. Current price to buy one used (980) isn't worth it for even a new one
April 16, 2017
Pros:
Decent gaming laptop for the time it was bought. Still usable for most needs now.
Touch screen. Though it gets dirty quickly, it has been nice using it like a tablet when reading. Doesn't work well as a mouse replacement for games though.
Decent range on the 5Ghz wifi.
Backlit keyboard, still running strong and has 2 levels of light and can be turned off, the letters are white and semi-transparent so they are clearly visible day and night whether the backlight is on or off.
No annoying light on the back of the screen.

Nuetral:
The 4k was a gimmick and few programs supported it well, so have been using it at the 1080 resolution.
It does have the dim yellow, but that is easily ignorable.
Keyboard layout is usable, but need to go into the Bios to switch the functions keys to behave normally.
As advertised, no disk drive. Far less requirements for disks these days. Put Windows 10 on using a flash drive.
Battery life seems decent, but even with it set to "Max performance even when unplugged" with settings put back to 100% CPU max, performance still grinds to horrendous when unplugged if doing anything outside of a browser.
Got a mouse for it since touch pad was annoying, but eventually got used to it.
No problems with the sound that I can tell, but I don't pay much attention to sound to being with. Usually sits at 20% volume when listening to music.

Cons:
The hinge broke and shattered part of my screen just before a single year of a use. It had been opened and closed daily since it was used on the move (Other laptops have been used same way no problem until they were replaced due to performance or frying their HDD), so this one lasting less than a year is garbage). The day it broke it was cold, if that helps anyone. Since it was within the warranty period, I sent it in to Lenovo, they fixed it no charge (besides shipping to get it to them), but they did wipe my hard drive for no reason. Since then it is only carefully closed when necessary and it has now been over a year since I sent it in and it hasn't broken again yet.
It's fans are very noisy. Start off fine, but within a few months, even with cleaning they get loud. Assuming some of their problem is from the hinges.
Though it has a SSD, I frequently put it to sleep to not lose browser state, and this has issues correctly waking up when the room temperature is cold. This sits in a "on with fans running" state with the screen off, give it a couple minutes, put it to sleep using Shift+F1, then bring it back and it is at the lock screen as if there were no problems.
48hz refresh rate, screws up a number of games since they rely on calculations of 60fps and their VSync on by default horrendously screws up gameplay. Thankfully most have had the ingame option to turn it off, or an .ini file that could be changed.
48hz screen makes 60fps content -- the new standard -- unwatchable
January 24, 2017
Great sound. Good value for the components (at the time of purchase). It's still trucking as a secondary workhorse business computer when I need to have an i7 processor around...

...but oh my god the 48hz screen is soooooo horrible. 4k is cool except when you can't watch 60fps content without insane stuttering. I do not recommend this model or ANY 48hz screen ever. Lesson learned for me.
Great laptop but cheaply made! Hinges broke off!
May 20, 2016
Bought this computer about 18 months ago and everything was working fine until the hinges broke off a couple months ago. Every time I open and close my computer, the hinges break off and make an awful noise. Now, I don't dare close my computer.

I really do like this computer and it's great for games; but I can't close it without the hinges coming off which is unacceptable.
Don't be fooled by the specs
October 26, 2015
When I first started using this laptop, I was excited to witness what a 4K laptop was capable of. I downloaded 4K pictures for my desktop background and tried looking at a bunch of 4K videos. Although it was great to look at high quality photographs, unfortunately it was not great when I would try to watch videos on Youtube or Facebook. The video would stutter and not run smoothly. It would pause on a part of the video while the audio continues to play, and eventually it would catch up to the audio again. This would only happen when I would try to watch high quality videos; lower quality videos did not have such problem.

The second reason why I am giving this product only 2 stars is because after only 7 months of usage, one of the hinges that connects the screen was starting to break off every time I try to open my laptop. And no, I have never dropped my laptop. I rarely even take it outside my house, let alone off of my table. Now I'm forced to never close the screen of my laptop, hoping that it won't do anymore damage than it already has.

Overall, the laptop screen is great to look at while the processing power doesn't really seem to live up to it's specs. And hopefully if you do decide to buy this laptop, this hinge issue doesn't happen to you.
Flickering Monitor Failure
March 13, 2015
I purchased this to replace an older Sony Vaio laptop. On receipt I really liked the unit, although the UHD display caused some software to display improperly or in an unreadable scale. On the eighth day after setup it was sitting on my desk running a routine backup program when the built-in monitor began flickering! I immediately set up video to record the issue. It continued to flicker and intermittently failed totally to black. On reboot the problem continued. I then connected a 2nd monitor via HDMI port. The 2nd monitor displayed correctly with no flickering, while the primary display in the unit flickered and failed to black! Obviously a defective unit. FBUY asked for a copy of the video which I e-mailed (as much as I could send). They authorized a return based on the issue. The return arrived at their depot on 3/12/15, and I am awaiting credit for the unit to my credit card. I'll repost with details when the credit is received. This seemed like a good unit. I hope it is only a one-time anomaly, and I hope FBUY rapidly credits my account as I am desperately in need of a replacement unit for my expired Sony Vaio.

Low Quality Build
April 25, 2017
After using it for a little less than 2 years, the laptop broke down. The excess of heating coming from the video card burned down the motherboard, making it completely useless.

I mainly used it for photoshop and lightroom, but I originally bought it to be a gaming laptop (since that is how it was advertised, as a gaming laptop).

But after playing a little over for 1 hour (World of Warcraft or Hearthstone), the laptop started overheating and then it was nearly impossible to lay the hand over the keyboard, as it usually was extremely hot. I used a tray with a fan underneath it, but didnt made much of a difference. A couple of hours running a game and it was burning like hell, until eventually broke down.

Definitely not worht $1k. specially since most of the time I usually game on my PS4, and had it this to play once in a while.
Don't buy!
March 4, 2017
This is probably the worst laptop, I have ever bought in my entire life. Every 300$ laptop is more reliable. and runs faster. I bought this laptop based on editor ratings in PC magazines, but their ratings are probably only based on Lenovo's advertising spend, rather than on the real performance, liability of this laptop.
Be Careful: Design Flaw on hinge of screen.
September 22, 2016
I've now had this laptop for almost 2 years and had no problems until today. The hinge where the screen attaches suddenly cracked and broke while simply opening the laptop. Apparently this is a common problem and my laptop is now beyond warranty. I love this laptop otherwise, but this makes me want to avoid Lenovo products from here on out. After searching online the problem is about a $300 fix. Ugh.

Keep in mind that I have never dropped or bumped this laptop and I have always transported it in a padded case. From the multiple forums I've read on Lenovo's website seem to indicate that it is a design flaw on the laptop itself.
This laptop has good specs. However
January 21, 2016
This laptop has good specs. However, it WILL break on you. The laptop is defectively designed such that the left hinge will eventually rip away from the laptop screen and lid. I now cannot close my laptop for fear of further damage. It has also caused damage to the screen and led to light bleed near the hinge.

In this regard, the design of the laptop is absolute garbage. Lenovo has yet to do the right thing and fix the design or repair the damage to my laptop. I will not buy Lenovo products again.

Absolutely do not buy this laptop as it will fall apart.
DISAPPOINTED AGAIN...
October 13, 2015
After 5 months, the cover is separating from the base, a problem noted by other purchasers. While this did not happen to me right out of the box, it has become extremely frustrating because neither the manufacturer nor the seller is taking responsibility and pointing at each other to rectify. I have had nothing but disappointment with recent purchases and I guess I will just add this to the list. I purchased this laptop based on the exceptional features for the price. Unfortunately those features are now meaningless with the computer in pieces. Also, just to complete the review, others reported an unstable pointing device which is absolutely true. Plan on using a mouse with this laptop. Also, the sound as reported is mediocre if you're a gamer but passable if you're using headphones for enjoyment. Buyer beware!
