amateur or a newbie this is a really great camera for the street photographer
August 1, 2017
I usually don't comment about things I purchase, but I had to speak up about this one!Whether you're a pro, amateur or a newbie this is a really great camera for the street photographer. It is light weight, easy to use one handed, quick auto focus, with a silent shutter as well. With the ability to switch to different lenses the possibilities are almost endless, a "smart photo" can't do that!!!I used the 12-50mm zoom kit lens and had no issues what so ever, I used it in either 12mm or 50mm nothing in between and it was perfect for my needs. I did not use the macro feature so I can't comment on that. With the 5 axis "in body stabilization" I was able to get great shots, even from a moving vehicle! The battery life is exceptional, by turning the power "on and off" one battery lasted all day for me. I know, I know, by turning the camera off "I might miss the photo of a life time", but let me tell you the camera turns on instantly therefore I can get those photos I'm going for.If you are in the market for a new camera, looking to replace a camera or want t get away from using a smart phone as a camera, this is one camera to seriously consider. You cannot go wrong with this one!!!
Love it!
April 29, 2017
I LOVE this camera! I'm just starting to play around with photography, and so far this seems like a great camera for beginners, extremely user friendly. To start, I was very pleasantly surprised to see what wonderful condition it is in. I was a bit nervous about buying a refurbishing camera, but it looks brand new. The battery was fully charged when it arrived so I was able to start using it as soon as I opened the box. The colors are beautiful, and the quality of the photos is wonderful overall. The settings were designed to make playing around with aperture very easy to figure out, something I'm really looking forward to. I love that the camera is able to detect where your eye is, as it switches to the view finder automatically when you put your eye up to it. The accompanying app was very easy to install and use, and I absolutely love the vintage look. Finally, I'm very impressed with the seller, as they reached out to me immediately after placing my order and made it clear that, should I have any questions, they would be more than happy to help. Overall, very pleased!
Updating review, from 4 to 5 stars. An amazing little camera
February 2, 2017
After lots and lots of research and reading reviews I decided to get this little guy as a bring everywhere camera. To keep it in the car with me at all times as opposed to lugging around my D7100 and bigger lenses. First of all it is much much smaller than any dslr. Pics don't really describe how small these really are until you get them in your hand. I really wanted something compact that I could have with me all the time, but much nicer than say a cell phone. I immediately ordered the Panasonic 42.5 and also the Oly 25 1.8 since I tend to love the classic 50mm and 85mm equivalent. Both are very nice little prime lenses. I can't emphasize this enough, but the size of these Micro 4/3 cameras is amazing. They're tiny. Anyway after using this for a month or so and taking it on a few trips I've come away with a few thoughts.Size: The size is awesome and it's very nice to be able to just throw it in the car on the front seat and have it all the time. I had a blast using it with my gorillapod to shoot little waterfalls back home, and being able to just plop it down and quickly get a shot is great. I bought a little messenger bag (Tenba dna-8 which is awesome) and it's just a real nice lightweight setup to carry.2: In body 5 axis stabilization (IBIS) is awesome. You can get clean hand held shots pretty consistently down to about 1/4 second.3: picture quality: The pictures are very nice. They get noisy pretty quickly at higher ISOs and it's quite noticeable compared to my d7100. If you shoot JPEG the noise reduction is pretty good but results in very soft but useable images at higher ISOs. I shoot RAW and do nr in post. It's a smaller sensor, so the dynamic range is a little less than a bigger DSLR but it's still plenty good enough.4: Battery life: The battery life isn't too terrible if you leave the screen review off and have it timeout quickly. Otherwise coming from a dslr setup, the battery life is quite terrible in comparison. I managed to burn through a battery in a few hours at night when I first got it (that was before turning off screen review after every shot and having it not timeout at all). So having a backup battery is what I would consider a must. Update 3/5/17: the battery life is just fine for a days worth of shooting. I took it out for some star trails using live composite the other night and let it run for an hour. Came back home and still showed full battery. So definitely not an issue, but still much less life than a DSLR.5: Ergonomics: Being small these MFT cameras leave a lot to be desired when it comes to ergonomics and layout of the buttons. I really miss having the top screen of my D7100 for quickly checking and setting ISO/Aperture, metering etc. Obviously being so small, you naturally don't have room for all of the extra buttons/dials that a bigger bodied camera affords. Olympus has what they refer to as a super control panel, and it allows you to change most things most used via that onscreen. It's fairly easy to use once you get used to it, but in many ways it reminds me of my Nikon D5100 which you had to change many settings onscreen as well, with hardly any shortcuts for often used functions compared to a DSLR.Conclusion: If I have the choice, I'll reach for my d7100 everytime if size isn't a factor for the day. It's just much easier to use quickly and I prefer the picture quality over the omd. Update 3/5/17: after even more use my last statement is becoming less and less true. The simple fact that I have this with me all the time and am becoming more used to using it, it's just a pure joy to use. The focus is dead accurate, and ibis at night is just awesome. Took it out with my son last night to the fair, and got some pretty nice shots at the fair at ISO 200 and 1/4 second or less. Completely awesome for hand held light trails of the rides and such. When I wanted shots with him, just turned the ISO up to keep the shutter speed up and it nailed darn near every shot. It's amazing. I love it. At the current price of 499 it's just an absolute steal. Think I payed 650 a couple months back. The entire point of getting this was to compliment my bigger setup, being able to always have it with me and not miss those opportunities that arrive and you wish you had a camera with you. Would I recommend one of these as a first camera? Absolutely! Whether this is your first and only camera, or your second and smaller "little camera" it's truly fantastic. The value this thing brings is just amazing. I currently have the pany 42.5 1.7, the oly 25 1.8 and the oly 9-18 and it's really a perfect setup for me. Covers 99% of anything I'll ever feel like shooting, and with a few nd's thrown in the mix for long exposures it's a perfect everyday setup. Highly recommended. Happy shooting :)
Great performance. Great complementary camera to a DSLR.
July 13, 2016
I bought this camera in Jun 2016 a day before my trip to India & Japan. Because of my trip logistics, I didn't want to take my DSLR (Canon 70D) + lenses with me. I wanted a camera that is lightweight (mirror-less) with APS or micro-four third sensor, has good high speed performance, can shoot raw, comes with advanced features like exposure bracketing, etc, and along with lenses, fits in my laptop bag. The other camera I considered was Sony A6000 APS, but I missed the deal price on that; so I got this Olympus camera instead just for the trip. My package: E-M10 Mark II + 14-42mm + 40-150mm Lens, bought from Amazon. In my mind I am comparing it Vs. my Canon 70-D DSLR though it may be an apples Vs. oranges comparison, for some of you.Pros (for me):1. Significantly Lighter, significantly smaller, Kit lenses in the bundle are much smaller, 37mm and 58mm filter size. After working with DSLR lenses, these lenses look like toy lenses and can fit a Jeans pocket easily.2. Quick learning curve on the user interface. I often use exposure bracketing, High Shutter speed etc. to eventually stack the pictures in Photoshop. Coming from Canon DSLR UI with no time to learn this camera, it was super-easy to work with these 'advanced' features on this camera straightaway on the trip.4. Very good speed and performance with high shutter speed. After 7-8 pictures, the camera will slow down for half a second, before it resumes another burst of 7-8 pictures. That was tad slower than 70D, but didn't make a huge difference.5. I used this camera with 67mm B&W 10-stop Filter on 40-150mm lens + 58-67mm step up ring. Very convenient to use, and it worked very well. The good thing compared to my Canon 70-D set up is that this camera can focus through the 10 stop filter, so I don't need to remove the filter, focus and then reattach the filter which isn't the most convenient thing to do with 70-D.6. It comes with horizontal and vertical level gauge and that is very useful to use to get pictures composed correctly. I used this feature with many complex shots like Tokyo Tower in Japan and it was very useful feature.7. The light metering on the camera is informative and easy to use while taking pictures with one eye looking through the view finder, much better than Canon 70D.8. The dial buttons are super fun and easy to use to play with aperture, shutter speed settings on the fly.9. Many AF points and super-easy to get it focus on a particular thing in a frame, better than my DSLR.Cons:1. The camera base ISO is 200, though it does come with LOW ISO setting, which I didn't use. I wish it had come with 50 or 100 as base ISO. I was using the camera in very bright conditions all the time and a lower ISO option would have been good.2. Low light: Honestly I didn't get to use the camera much in low light, because of the environment I was in, but the noise at ISO settings higher than 1600 was too high for my taste. Looking at how much headroom I had, with the "shutter speed, ISO and aperture triangle", I didn't get a great vibe about the performance in low light conditions. A f/2.8 or f/1.8 lens would help in those situations.3. Small camera, small batteries, so batteries would not last more than 300-340 shots. Kind of expected. But with smaller batteries, I had 3 batteries on the trip with me and that helped. On my typical trip day, I can get through 1 day with 1 battery on Canon 70D, but with this camera, I would need 1.5-2 battery charges. All in all a great camera. I won't sell my DSLR to keep this, but this would be a complementary camera for places / occasions where I don't want to carry my DSLR bag.
Excellent for general shooting, portraits, astrophotography, and macro photography
May 23, 2016
I'm an aspiring amateur photographer, and I did a lot of research to find the right camera to meet my needs. Please view the attached sample images (don't judge too harshly, I'm not a photographer). After doing my research, I decided this camera would be the best for my needs and I'm very happy with my choice. Here's what I like best about it for each of my photography needs:* Shooting pictures of my kids: The 14-42mm EZ Lens is very versatile, and the combination of this lens and body (with the addition of the automatic lens cap) make it great for carrying around at family activities. The images are nice and sharp with decent enough bokeh for a zoom lens. Auto-focus is fast, and while burst mode on some other Micro 4/3 cameras is faster, I find that the Low burst mode (which will auto-focus) is plenty fast for my needs.* Nature macro shots - This camera includes focus bracketing which is a must have for the types of macro shots I'm after (primarily of mushrooms). In camera focus stacking would be nice, but being able to focus bracket the image and stack later on my PC is fine (and actually offers a little more control over the process)* Astrophotography - I have been pleasantly surprised at just how good this camera is for astrophotography. The live-time and live-composite modes make shots that would be difficult on other cameras very straight-forward.* Photos of my reef aquarium (under LED lighting that tends to be hard to photograph) - LED lights tend to show very blue on cameras, so having good control over white balance makes it that much easier. This camera performs very well* Landscape - Great, in particular the built in landscape scene mode gives some very nice images* Wildlife - Great BUT to do wildlife any justice I really need a lens with a little more reach. There are some excellent Micro 4/3 wildlife lenses available* Anything else - The live-composite mode is very fun. If you have ever wanted to experiment with light painting, this camera makes it dead simple. Just get yourself some glow sticks or sparklers and try it out!Pros:* Good quality lenses available for Micro 4/3 platform at reasonable prices* Great image quality* 5 axis image stabilization* Live time and live composite modes are amazing* Great autofocus* Fast enough burst mode for my needs* iAuto mode is handy for giving the camera to others to take a picture* Nice electronic view finder and articulating touch screen* Feature-rich* Function buttons and "My Sets" allow you to configure the camera for many different shooting scenariosCons:* Slow power on time (1.3 seconds, vs. competitors that are less than .5 seconds)* Sometimes turning camera off quickly after turning it on results in the lens remaining extended* No input for external microphone* Steep learning curve if you want to take advantage of advanced functionality
Taking pictures is fun again

Smaller than I thought! I've had it for just a few days, but I'm really liking it so far. It just makes you want to go and take pictures. It's fun to use and you quickly get comfortable with the huge number of options available. I got the 25mm f1.8 and it's perfect.

Love the camera -- would give it 5 stars were it less complex. I have no doubt that Olympus means well, but there is simply no way to use this camera "intuitively". Pity. They haven't learnt the truth of the "less is more" maxim that turns, say, a Leica into a masterpiece. Other than that, it works flawlessly, has a brilliant EVF, a great range of reasonably priced lenses, and is nicely made and finished for its price. Wi-fi works significantly more reliably than in prior model. Olympus' current price for the 40 -- 150mm, f4.0--f5.6 kit lens -- $100 -- is a roaring bargain. Grab it!

First mirrorless camera
May 15, 2016
This was our first mirrorless camera. I bought this for my fiancé because she wanted to get into blogging and also we had her graduation and our wedding coming up so we wanted sometime nice and small to document all the memories. This camera was everything we wanted and was an upgrade from our Nikon D5100.The quality of the pics were excellent for having a smaller sensor. We bought a Fuji x-t10 to try out side by side with this and ended up returning the fuji. Yes the fuji had overall sharper pictures and was easier to use especially for my fiancé. But as long as you're willing to learn how to use the Olympus omd em10 mark ii, it's not bad at all. The main reason we stuck with olympus was price. The price of fuji lenses were 2-3 timed the price of micro four third lenses (we bought an olympus 45mm and Panasonic 14mm). And for someone like my fiancé who just wants pictures better than what the latest smartphones can offer, this fit the criteria without breaking the bank.

I'm an amateur photographer and this was my first camera. I bought it as it was the best bang for its buck. The camera is amazing and takes great photos. It's also a pretty good camera to learn on as I'm currently doing that.
Incredible diversity
January 22, 2016
this is a great camera if you want to own the most complicated, diverse settings of ANY camera I have ever owned. The options and menu settings verge on the ridiculous....If you have a photographic memory, no pun intended, you will love its diversity. If not put the thing on Auto and shoot away.
Excellent camera, premium feel but complex menu and functions.
November 23, 2015
I purchased this camera last week and been using it ever since. I love it. the size, the weight is just perfect. I take it every. I use to have a Canon 60D, the camera is a great, but it's way too large and heavy for me to carry around. this is so portable, it's just perfect.Picture quality is exceptionally sharp. It takes great pictures. the image stabilization is great. I have a lot of problem taking pictures with my other DSLR due to the weight, but with this, I can shoot all day. The 5 axis stabilization is great. Took some videos and it came out very very well with minimal or no shaking at all. This camera has almost all the bells and whistles the bigger brothers EM5 II or the EM1 has for a fraction of the price. As for the built quality of the camera. it's certainly has a premium feel. Very solid. however the batter door feels very flimsy. I don't understand why they build the whole camera so solid and used a flimsy plastic battery door. it feels like it's going to break every time I open it to charge the battery or pull my SD card. The grip is not as good as on other camera. The Sony A6000 has a better grip. The strap eye lid / Strap Holder if you will seems to get in the way of the hand holding the camera as well as trying to push the shutter button. The functionality of this camera is my biggest issue. not that it's bad, it's because there is just too many functions in this camera. The menu is very complicated, not easy to navigate. For someone like me who is no professional. I have a very hard time understanding many of these functions. I'm still reading the instruction booklet after a week of using it. However, despite the complexity of the menu and functions, this camera can be fully customize every single button and dials. I certainly would give it a 5 star if the menu is not so complexI just absolutely love this camera. Oh, on an other note. if you are looking for a carrying case for these mirrorless cameras, go buy a Sony bag. I looked around and found the Sony camera bag is perfect for a camera, a zoom lens, a battery charger and a portable external flash.1/2/2016After a month of using the camera, I can tell you I obsolutly love it. I also purchased a prime lens, the 17mm f1.8. it's very fast, great for low light, but even just the kit lens works great. the image stabilization is truly awesome. that where most of my problem with the older camera. my hands tents to shake slightly and the picture comes out blurry. with this camera, I get sharp pictures. I even took a picture of running water, at 1 sec shutter, handheld and it comes out great.Pros:Great compact size cameragreat image stabilizationsharp imageCons:Original Battery is very poor, had to purchase some after market battery and works 3-4 times as long. The battery door and the port cover still feels flimsyThe EVF sensor is a little too sensitive. The function menu is not friendly1/26/2015So I have this camera for some times now and really been using it all over the place. I just love the size and portability compare to my previous Canon 60D. I have learn a lot with this camera. It take great pictures. I love it so much, I end up purchasing a M.Zuiko 17mm f1.8 Prime lens for it. I purchased Panasonic 20mm f1.7 lens first, but the AF wasn't that great in low light, so I sold that and traded for the 17mm. Love it. I love the camera, I take it everywhere because. However as much as I love this camera. the longer you have it, the more small issues you find. Not major. I still love the camera. For One, the battery is worst then expected. I end up purchasing 2 more higher capacity battery for it. they do hold more capacity than the OEM battery for a fraction of the price.I found that at ISO 1600, noise really started to show. I have use it in many occasion in the evening outing and used different ISO setting. and at 1600 and higher, you can really see the grain showing. I have contacted Olympus and they ask me to send them some samples and they sent me a link by on how to setup your camera by Robin Wong. Instructions to setup EM5 Mark II, it's really the same as the EM10 II. What's interesting was before I have my camera's noise filter set to high and noise reduction set to on and I still get a bit of grains, but according to Robin (the Olympus Professional) he suggest to turn off the noise filter and noise reduction to auto. Well see that Olympus said after they view my pictures. I taken some pictures at my grandmother's birthday dinner and and to print a few 8x10 photos for her and I was not very impress with the noise level. I am attaching a image of the product image taken at good low light, not bad low light and if you zoom in a little, you can see the grains.Link to Robin Wong's review and setup. Check it out, some setting are helpful.http://robinwong.blogspot.com/2015/07/the-robin-wongs-om-d-camera-cheat-sheet.htmlAfter using it for a couple of months, trying to learn the ins and out of the camera, I have master a good part of the camera, but even with all these learning. I still think the menu is very complicated like many people does. there's just too many level and too many features. you use it, but next time you want to go back to it, you'll forget where it is again. But what's interesting is if it's not the complex menus, I might not have learn so much about photography. I been youtubeing and web searching all the little features little by little like the Robin Wong's link. it does teach you a lot.Oh, by the way, there is one thing I absolutely love about the camera and can't live without it is the super control panel. it's almost everything you need is there.

FN1 Button Sticks
September 17, 2016
I am a huge fan of the m43 system for its compact size and excellent image quality. After having my Olympus EP3 for almost 5 years I decided that I was due for a camera upgrade. I had difficulty deciding between this model, the mark II and the original OMD EM-10, and decided to go with the upgraded version. After opening it up and testing it out with the Olympis 12-40 f/2.8 pro lens attached, while I really love the camera overall, on my copy the FN1 button seems to stick and is very difficult to press. I was never able to press it using my thumb, and was only occasionally successful using my index finger. Considering that the button is on the thumb grip, I would like to actually be able to make use of it. For this reason, I've decided to return the camera. I heavily use the function buttons on my ep3 since I like to back button focus and be able to easily change ISO (since Olympus' menu system is rather clunky and outdated), and I can't justify spending $700 on a camera that I can't use one of the buttons consistently. I'm by sure if this is an issue with just the model I received or is a problem in general. I am going to purchase the older E-M10 since it looks like the FN1 might be easier to push.A few positive notes: the auto focus is insanely fast when compared to my Ep3, which had been my biggest gripe with the camera. Touch focus is pretty accurate and quick as well.I liked being able to look at the camera live view using the Olympus app. Setup was quick and easy though the app occasionally had trouble connecting with the camera.
Good E-M10 but not good enough for me

Bad battery life
June 25, 2017
Be warned - this thing chews through batteries fast. I was used to a Canon SLR where I could go long period between battery charges. Left on a shelf, the SLR was usually ready to go when needed. This Olympus kills its battery very fast when in use and even when just stored. I like that its more compact than an SLR, but it adds a lot of inconvenience that I always need to remember to charge the batteries before I expect to use it.
Do not buy refurbished
October 1, 2016
The camera stopped working on the second day of a trip I've been planning for 12 years. The backlight turned on, but displayed nothing, even when the camera was physically turned off. This was a refurbished unit and Beach Camera did ABSOLUTELY nothing to rectify the issue. Merely offered a return, after I sent the camera in.

Good camera, terrible Olympus service
August 30, 2017
The camera itself has worked great, for the time that I've used it. The reason I'm giving the Olympus OM-D E-M10 Mark II a 1 star rating is Olympus's repair process. The system they use to manage, track, and contact customers about their ongoing repairs is archaic, at best. Here's why:I sent my camera in over a month ago after the shutter system stopped working (which happens to be a common problem if you Google it), and I received an email containing my name, a link to their repair website, and my repair order number. Once you navigate to their website, you will fill in your name and your order number, and you are brought to a page that contains information regarding your repair order, including your repair status. I checked this periodically for 1.5 weeks, when I finally saw that the repair status had been changed to "Pending Approval". I waited another week, and the status had not changed. I finally called them, when they let me know that they were waiting for me to submit payment details before starting the repair. They hadn't request payment details from me beforehand in the process, and they hadn't notified me that the repair status had changed and required payment in order to continue.(I also bought this off of Amazon 5 months ago, which falls underneath their warranty period, but the seller wasn't a Licensed Olympus Seller, so I recommend double checking who you buy the camera from)After submitting my payment details, they told me they'd send it out as soon as possible. I continued checking the link for another week for the status of my repair, when I finally saw that they had attached a UPS Tracking Number to the page. I saw on the UPS Tracking Page that it was set to arrive in a couple of days, but I didn't receive it on the scheduled day. After waiting a couple of more days, I called Olympus again, requesting an update on my now-lost camera, which they said they'd file a claim for. They told me that the package had arrived successfully, and to check with my neighbors to see if anybody had received it (I live in an apartment building surrounded by other apartment buildings, so this was amusing), and gave me a lost claim number. They told me to call back sometime in the next 7-10 business days, which was their estimate for completing the claim, with the claim number as reference. At this point, I was incredibly frustrated that they had no way to notify me about any updates in any of their processes, so I looked into my delivery details with UPS directly. It turns out they had delivered it to Michigan, instead of Washington where I live, which I quickly notified Olympus about, hoping to see if there was any way to speed up their lost claim process. They still told me to call in 7-10 business days.TLDR; Olympus's repair process does not contain any modern software system that sends notifications to customers. This has resulted in an incredibly lengthy repair process that will make you never want to deal with Olympus again. If you're considering buying a mirrorless camera at this price point, I recommend going with a product from a different company.

Product control is poor. Customer service is even worse. The cameras is ok. It's not going to blow you out of the water. Its compact and light but it falls short on image quality. I feel like there are better options out there such as Fuji and Panasonic. The reason for the 1 star was that there was a function button broken already when purchased new! Don't know how that got through all the inspection but my guess is that their quality control is pretty low. Tried sending it back and it took a few weeks after their messy and out dated website. Check it out and try to navigate through it as its congested and outdated. Seriously Olympus look at Canon or Fuji to model for websites! But upon receiving it the technician just reseted it back to factory settings which I could of done. The issue wasn't even fixed it was just reseted. What a waste of my time and shipping money. Now I have to send it back to have it fixed so I can sell this terrible camera! Calling customer service was poor also and I couldn't understand their terrible english. Seriously will ever buy another Olympus Product. Lets be honest there are better options in terms of cameras and customer service elsewhere so you should look and do the same when considering Olympus.
Pictures looked good. Well the ones we were able to take

Pictures looked good. Well the ones we were able to take. The camera motor or lens stopped working after about 40 pictures. Could hear it trying to work but lens would not deploy or zoom or focus. Tried removing lens and also using manual mode to no avail. Returned the camera without a fuss via amazon.Camera was nice size, looked good.Battery door is very flimsy but rest of camera is nice if it would have kept working.
Partially functional on arrival. Going back
January 17, 2016
First time out of the box, could not go to the central menu to set the date/time. Odd, so took some pictures. Unable to view them via the buttons on the back of the camera. The printed manual made references to pages that were clearly not in the multi-language manual. The full manual was online, but no guidance on what to do when the Menu button doesn't work. Email response is 2-3 business days. Given it is a holiday weekend, that is 2 days away. Stay tuned.
This camera does indeed seem marvelous but But BUT. ...

This camera does indeed seem marvelous but But BUT... Much to my chagrin I discovered that I would have to upgrade both my Photoshop and my Lightroom programs. I have the last version of Photoshop that is not a monthly rental, CS 6 and Lightroom 5. I think it reprehensible and so very greedy of Adobe to now charge a monthly rental fee for their programs... Forever, and I refuse to do so. I returned this camera and purchased the Olympus Pen E-pl7, which has almost the same features, the same 16 mega pixels, and is a year older. The image files from it will work in both of my Adobe programs. I would advise that you Do Not purchase this camera if you do not want to purchase new, rental, software to go with it.
