Cuisinart TOB-135 Deluxe Convection Toaster
June 19, 2016
I've had a Cuisinart toaster oven for many years and it has worked very well for me. I felt it was time for a new one and since my old model is no longer available, I gave this one a try. I've not been disappointed. As with anything new, I have had to try a few settings to get back to the way the old one worked, but it didn't take long to be up to speed. I've only tried baked potatoes so far as baking is concerned and they actually came out better than the old one I had. Toast and English muffins are great.
Highly recommend this fabulous toaster oven - it's perfect!

I carefully researched 'toaster ovens' because I've had a series of cheaper ones, mostly Black & Decker that simply weren't high quality over time, and I found myself replacing them every 18 months or so. I chose this product because of the name, the great reviews, and the look of the oven. I've had it two weeks now, have used it 2-4 times a day and absolutely love it! I've used the toast, bagel, broil, bake functions and have roasted potatoes and veggies with the baking function and find them all very easy to use, accurate and quiet. The oven cleans easily, heats quickly, toasts evenly (without drying out bread or bagels) and just does what it's supposed to do. I love that the drip pan simply pulls out from the front, and that its coating makes it very easy to clean. The unit is completely silent, except for the bell tone when the time is up. It's easy to program and operate and is everything I'd hoped for. I enthusiastically recommend it! Appearance wise, it's a very attractive addition to my kitchen counter, I love the digital programming and backlight.
Cuisinart ROCKS
May 24, 2014
Toaster ovens in my experience are good for a year or two than elements need to be replaced, knobs fall off, etc. So when I found the toaster oven I purchased at Overstock lasted seven plus years as a reconditioned item, I knew when I needed a replacement I'd be buying another from Cuisinart. My older oven still works, but it definitely is showing age as the light-dark dial for toast is toast (just spins) and the door no longer closes successfully. So I started comparing Cuisinart models and also sites to purchase from (narrowing it down to Overstock and Amazon). This Cuisinart TOB-135 came out the winner as it was a trifle larger than some others and also offered the preprogramming functions, including a cooking timer. Amazon also offered the best deal - at least $15 less than Overstock and with my Prime free shipping, purchasing from here was a no brainer!
My only concern was my housemates admitted lack of electronic capability, but the way this Cuisinart is designed even an admitted technophobe was baking, toasting, and broiling with the simplest instructions from me - and the Cuisinart too. That's right this little toaster ovens controls blink to tell you what to do next. It could not be easier to learn to use. Toast comes out shaded the way I want, the baking function and auto timer shut off - fabulous. It's roomy enough for a smallish (4lb) chicken or even a small boneless leg of lamb - which is great when you don't want to use a large oven or heat up the whole house. I haven't yet tried the convection function, but plan to when I do some baking. One thing...definitely read the instructions as there are some handy tips there, including where and when to place the oven rack for the most successful cooking.
This is a really solid toaster and so well constructed. Love the removable crumb tray - along with the baking tray and broiler rack - all easy to clean surfaces as well.
I'm hoping this one will last 7+years as well - It seems from previous reviewers comments it should. Kudos to Cuisinart for another indispensable kitchen item and to Amazon for fabulous service and prices!
Love it so far
March 12, 2014
I chose this toaster oven after exhaustive research. Why so much time spent? Because I didn't research at all the last one I bought about three years ago. That one was a pricey Cuisinart; so I thought to myself as I grabbed it off the shelf at Bed, Bath & Beyond that it must be a decent product. What a mistake. It was the most illogical, irritating thing imaginable. There was no "On-Off" button, and no "On" indicator light of any kind, so you never actually knew if it was on or off. The only way to turn it on, apparently, was by setting the timer, which ran for all of three minutes. So, to cook an item for fifteen minutes, the timer had to be set five times! The only way to turn the thing off was by pulling the plug out from the wall.

After that experience, I never thought I'd end up with another Cuisinart, but did; and so far, so good. This one is light years ahead of the one I just dumped, being well thought out and simple to use. It toasts, bakes, and broils very quickly. Another reviewer said it takes four minutes for toast. I'm not getting that at all. I think he might be looking at the "4" on the screen, which is for the shade of medium, and confusing that with minutes, I don't know.

Another thing I like is that it has insulation on the sides and does not get too hot. In fact, the sides do not seem to get hot at all. This was a big consideration for me, as some of these things are like fire hazards. The glass door does get hot, so you can't touch that; but the handle is far enough away from the glass for this to be a problem.

Several others complained about the size; and you can see my comments after one of these reviews. I think it is a standard size toaster oven. You can fit at least six very large baked potatoes. If you are using this as a replacement for a regular oven, then you might want to look at a different size.

It also does not have any of the loud, piercing beeps or hideously bright lights that reviewers of some other ovens complained about. The crumb tray pulls out easily from the front.

So, so far, so good.

If you are crammed on space then this is the oven for you
August 28, 2016
Hello, experienced reviewer here. I've been buying online and off amazon for years and I always research products before buying them.

My mother lives in this tiny apartment (which she loves) but for zoning reasons she is not allowed to have an oven (I'm not joking), so she needed a good substitute. After searching around on the market I found that this was the best option and after buying it I couldn't be happier. She can make pies, chicken, hamburgers, pizzas, and whatever else she wants in this thing. Its simple enough for her to use even with some of the more advanced features and she absolutely loves it. There is only one small minor drawback which is that if you pull out the metal grill inside (for example when checking something), about halfway out it will unhook and tip over. This can make a mess, but is easily avoidable one you know about it. Also 1800 watts is about the limit of a standard 15 amp breaker, so don't try to use this and something else on the same breaker at the same time.

Final advise: If you are crammed on space then this is the oven for you.
Excellent

Wonderful counter top oven. Baked everything from classic apple pie to classic pound cake to glazed salmon. After preheating, the circular pizza baking sheet is excellent for baking from scratch pie crusts in Pyrex pie dishes as it helps brown the crust's bottom.
Turning into my Kitchen Centerpiece
October 10, 2014
This is one of my most used appliances.

PROS
- it toasts bread and bagels perfectly
- it reheats my meals better than a microwave
- it has a "keep warm" mode so you can use it to keep breakfasts warm for larger families (I use this a lot)
- it bakes like a regular oven
- it has convection
- it has a cutout in the back for pizzas
- it has replaced my oven for smaller chores

CONS
- the top gets a bit warm, so consider getting the matching bamboo board that goes on top with silicone pads

I can't say enough great things about this. I loved it so much, I got a second one for my parents and they now can't live without theirs!
Love the product. Some issues with dimensions of pans you may wish to know about...
May 27, 2014
This is my review of Breville BOV800XL Smart Oven 1800-Watt Convection Toaster Oven with Element IQ. I review this product with reference to other items available for purchase on Amazon.com. I want to tell potential buyers about my discovery to save time and frustration for somebody else.
First of all, I have two of these ovens installed on a rolling shelf on my back porch. Both ovens have functioned very well and I use at least one almost daily. Rarely I use two ovens at once; I had an electrician wire dedicated outlets on my porch so no blown fuses occur if I use more than one oven at the same time. I live in the Rio Grande Valley of Texas and we run air conditioning 360 days of the year most years so I try to cook outside. I highly recommend the ovens. Most of my use is of the broiler function which I dearly love, then baking. I rarely toast, but I have done so and toasting is quite nice too.
Please be aware that Amazon.com does not give correct dimensions on three items I purchased to specifically use in the Breville Convection Toaster Oven. I hope my efforts to inform you of my problems will save time and energy for somebody else. More than that, I hope Amazon.com will consider giving actual dimensions of their products. All three items listed as having a maximum of 12 inch dimension had instead 13.25 inch maximum total dimensions and as a result when I put them into the oven I could not close the door. All pans are too large front to back. Part of the problem is that the actual dimensions are rectangular and square dimensions, not circular dimensions. I cannot use these items said to be 12 x 12 inches. The 4.5 x 12 inch product can be used on its long axis in this oven, but that is not the axis I was hoping to use (I foresee potential burn danger in putting in two loaf pans on that axis.).
I double checked the interior of the BOV800XL and I see that the 13 inch pizza said to be able to fit inside the oven has a middle "cut out" portion built into the back of the oven. I thought a 12 x 12 pan would fit and allow me to close the door of the oven. I doubt that is the case. The square pan shipped with the oven is 11.5 x 11.5 inches. I cannot say for sure, but I doubt a 12 x 12 inch pan would fit and allow closing of the oven door. I urge you to keep this in mind.
I hope these comments are helpful.

Incidentally, the three items I ordered were:

Ateco 3-Inch Professional Square Baking Pan

Fat Daddio's Anodized Aluminum Square Cake Pans (12 x 12 x 2 inch)

Wilton Recipe Right Loaf Pan (Long 2-piece).
Great little oven!

There are just two of us and I was tired of heating up my whole kitchen just to brown a few tater tots. I wanted more than just a toaster oven (I have a decent toaster) and needed something that would cook fast-with convection. After reading reviews, I decided to spend the money and go with this oven. So far, I am very happy with it. I can cook a batch of tater tots in less time than it takes my big oven to preheat! Baked potatoes are fairly fast and taste much better than microwaved ones. Baked fish comes out nicely as well. I have not baked any cookies or cakes since both my husband and I are diabetic and we can't eat those things. It is nice to be able to sit a platter on top of the oven to keep something warm while the veggies finish cooking and you get the table set. The outside of the oven does get hot, so you do need to keep space around it. Still, my kitchen stays much cooler than when I use my conventional oven.I did order the Polder KTH-711-47 Trivet, Stainless Steel Polder KTH-711-47 Trivet, Stainless Steel to put the oven on to protect my wood counter. It was big enough and sturdy enough to hold the oven and seems to work well. Also ordered the pizza crisper Breville BOV800PC13 13-Inch Pizza Crisper for use with the BOV800XL Smart Oven which works well. Reheating pizza is fast and crust does not get soggy like it does in the microwave. May consider getting the pizza stone, but we really don't make that many pizzas from scratch any more. Already have two large baking stones collecting dust on top of my frig!Did not order the bamboo cutting board as I have plenty of nice cutting boards and could not see a reason to add another $40 to my order. You can't store anything on top of the oven and the cutting board did not seem to serve any real purpose.I did heat the oven without anything in it (as directed) before using it. There was a slight odor (as indicated) but it simply smelled like the furnace when it first comes on after being off all summer, or like an electric heater being used after standing for a few months. As indicated in the directions, there has been no odor whatsoever since. So far, I have had no need to clean the inside of the oven. I use the roasting pan which came with the oven and simply line it with a little no-stick aluminum foil. Have yet to need to wash the roaster. It is also very quiet and the controls are exceptionally easy to use. The auto shutoff is great so I don't have to worry about leaving the thing running. Also, it is easy to change the time/temp during cooking if you need to.All in all an excellent value for the money.

September 1, 2016
I have been using this toaster oven for 6 months now. I really like it. I do nearly all of my cooking in this oven. Fixing meals for two, I don't need to use the big oven and it saves heating my kitchen up during the summer. I like the convection feature as well. There were others similar to this oven but the warranty for the Cuisinart is longer and the reviews were better.
Not sure what to do
July 26, 2016
Love the toaster oven but only had it a couple of weeks and the words on the one button is almost completely rubbed off. I am worried if this happens to the other buttons we will not know what button to press. I read all the reviews before my purchase but did not see anything about this. Not sure if I should return it or not. Otherwise it is fabulous!
Sleek looking toaster oven!
December 26, 2015
I bought this for my parents for Christmas. So far it's been doing a decent job.First off- the reason I chose this one is because my mom had commented that she really enjoyed the toast from my cuisine art toaster. Of course mine is 5 years old and not widely available. This one had decent reviews so I purchased it.The good: it looks sleek, it's not too big so it doesn't look huge on a counter. It makes great toast!!! And of course the oven function works well for smaller items so you don't have to heat up your real oven. I love the blue back light as well.THE NOT SO GOOD: it's almost a little too hi tech. Also if you don't watch your toast even on the lightest setting - it will burn!!!!! So you can't just walk away- which is a little annoying. It also costs a lot!!!!!!If you have money to spend then it may be worth it - otherwise a cheaper option would likely do the job.
Perfect for us!
August 19, 2015
I bought this to quit heating the oven for so long when it was just a 30 minute bake that I needed. It works great and my husband uses it a lot. Don't care for the toasting - seems to make the bread a little dry - but for bake and broil - it wins. Heats up in less than 3 minutes so you are done quickly with minimal heat in the kitchen.

March 18, 2015
Love this and my first time using a convection toaster over. Two complaints though, No on off switch and if you leave it plugged into an outlet it keeps turning on and off as if you wish to program cooking time. Second problem it ois very difficult to tell temp and time as their is a red indictor over this part of the dial.
Nice little oven
October 25, 2013
I bought this to replace my 7 year old model of similar design which I used on a daily basis. It heats pretty evenly at a slightly higher temp than the previous one, I set it 25 degrees lower than suggested temps. The convection works well and is much quieter than the previous model, you can barely hear it. No bulge on the side, either. I subtracted a star due to the door design, it is difficult to pull stuff out without contacting the HOT lowered door because there is no space between the lowered door and the rack, so you can't grab the rack with a potholder easily.

My favorite home appliance ever! Problems with Start button but FANTASTIC customer service
May 19, 2017
First let me say that I absolutely LOVE my Breville smart oven. I use it multiple times per day. I do not have a microwave - I use this instead and my food tastes way better. I use it for making toast, bagels, warming up pancakes (I like to make a bunch at a time and freeze so we can have them for breakfast on the go), and reheating leftovers. I also love using it for baking because it doesn't heat up the kitchen in the summertime, and also because it heats more quickly than my big oven. It also has a warm feature and I use that for keeping food warm and also for warming plates when I want to be fancy. I bought this smart oven in 2013 after using the same one at a friend's place. She had just finished renovating her house and putting in a dream kitchen with a SubZero fridge and a Wolf range, and she told me her Breville smart oven was her favorite appliance. So I bought one and I have been so very happy with it! My mom came to my house and tried it and then she had to have one too. Same with my sister and a close friend.BUT I have to be honest - there is a real problem with the Start buttons on this particular model. I had problems with mine within the first year. I would push the Start button and it would not work or it would behave as though I had pressed it multiple times. I eventually got to the point where I would have to press Start several times before I finally got it to work. But Breville's customer service was AWESOME. When I finally contacted them, I had the toaster oven for a little over a year and of course the warranty was only one year. But they replaced my oven with a brand new one.UPDATE (May 2017): The second toaster oven ended up with the same Start button problems. I contacted Breville customer service again and after a bit of back and forth, they sent me a refurbished smart oven of the same model. It looks brand new and is working fine so far. Hopefully they have remedied the Start button issues on this one.Even with the Start button issues, I am still very pleased with my smart oven, mainly because of the fantastic customer service. I would still heartily recommend the product. Because of my positive experience with the Breville smart oven, I also bought their immersion blender Breville BSB510XL Control Grip Immersion Blender and have been equally pleased with it.
When your oven is smarter then some tv's out there, you know you got something cool.
May 4, 2016
After quite a bit of time looking for a good toaster oven, I came across this multiple times.

It looked cool, and sounded like it would do the trick especially if you don't' want some big oven taking up space if your not gonna use it much.

I like the look of the stainless steel. The LCD screen is pretty cool as well, allowing you to customize everything. The knobs even though they feel plastic, are still sturdy. One of the nice features I like is the plug in has a hole in it to easily grab it with a finger and unplug it easier. One of the few times iv seen that on an appliance and I noticed it right away. Good job Breville for thinking of even the smallest things. Another thing which was quite nice is the magnet on the door, which allows you to pull out the tray slightly when opening the oven. The only downside is its only on the cookie, bagel type middle tray. The others do not have this feature which is a bit of a let down especially if you mainly use it for baking.

Another thing which luckily I haven't found out for myself but from reading other reviews someone mentioned the LCD screen quit working on their model. They claimed they left it plugged in all the time which probably burnt it out or something. For me I only plug it in when im using it but that does have me worried someday it will mess up and thus I wont be able to see it anymore. That can be a huge downside cause once that happens you wont know where its at.

Pros:
1. Mostly Stainless Steel construction
2. LCD screen helps you find what you want to do quicker and easier
3. The size is nice for most items
4. The plug for the outlet has a cool little hole making it easier to remove when done. (nice if other companies would think like that)
5. The magnet on the door which works at helping pull out the tray slightly for easier time grabbing it.
6. It pre-heats relatively quickly.

Cons:
1. The magnet on the door is only for the middle rack which is used rarely. Only for stuff such as cookies, bagels etc. The baking and broiling (though I never plan to use that feature) have no magnets on the door to make it easier to pull it out when done.
2. The constant need to clean it a lot because you want it to stay looking nice cause its a really nice baking oven.

There isn't much I can find fault with this oven. I like it quite a lot and it seems better then most ovens out there. They went above and beyond when designing this one. I look forward to any future designs Breville makes. I haven't had a chance to see what other stuff they make but if its is as nice of quality as this oven I will be quite pleased. I always stive to get quality products and Breville so far has not disappointed.

Will update this later if I come across any problems etc.
I purchased my Breville BOV800 XL Smart Oven from Amazon on May 30
December 20, 2014
I purchased my Breville BOV800 XL Smart Oven from Amazon on May 30, 2013 and was well satisfied until the heating coils failed six months out of warranty. Not expecting any warranty service I contacted Breville Customer Service and explained the heating coil problem and asked for probable causes and cost of replacement parts. To my surprise, especially after reading negative reviews on service they told me to send the oven back and they would send a new replacement. The new oven arrived nine days after our first contact with them. I am a very happy customer and would recommend this product to a friend.
My favorite appliance...until it broke down 18 months later.
June 26, 2014
This smart oven has completely replaced my full-size oven. I use it for everything. It heats up very quickly and cooks evenly. It's extremely easy to use and is just big enough to cook anything I need. Note there are only two of us in my house. If I had more mouths to feed, that would be a different story.

I have been very happy with this smart oven for the past 18 months. Yesterday, it beeped and stopped working. I did nothing but turn it on to preheat as I usually do. After reaching out to Breville customer service, I was told I would have to send it to their repair center, which would cost me $119 or they would give me a 30% discount if I wanted to buy a new one. They would pay for shipping but I would have to box up the oven myself.

I just paid $250 for this oven 18 months ago! Having to pay 48% of the purchase price 18 months later for repair when I didn't do anything to break the oven seems unfair. Even purchasing a new one at a 30% discount seems unbelievable. Am I going to have to buy a new one every 18 months?

Bottom line is I think this oven is great but buyer beware of service issues.
2 years and I like it more than I did when I bought it.
July 21, 2013
It was a difficult decision to go with this oven instead of a Delonghi or just go cheap and get a bigger Oster. I went with this one because reviews said this was lasting and cooked well. I hope this will be with me for many years to come. The good: Heats up quickly Toasts well (my likes) Great at reheatingThe so-so:-Baking leaves a bit to be desired. I had hoped my meatloaf would have cooked in 45 min (about what it takes in my big oven), but alas, no. It was done at 1 hour 15 min. My cheap-o Black and Decker oven can do this.- size could have been just a bit bigger- dials get hung up in a few spotsWhat I don't like:-No clock-No oven light at this price point these should be standardThe one thing I do love, it does not heat my kitchen up.I will see how things go. I cannot say I love this oven, yet. I will see how this works in the coming months. It has the potential to win my heart.Update 31 July 2013:Here is what I am finding out: Rack position is key. Put it in the wrong position and you will not see good results. Forgetting to set the toast slice count to the actual slices gives less than perfect toast. But this is an operator problem not the oven's.I do like the toast, it comes out the exactly the same time after time. I love the toaster hash browns, toaster waffles come out good. Hate how it cooks rolls, not good with cookies either, but I am playing with finding the right settings. Frozen pizza's come out frozen in the middle and burnt on the edge. I hate to say it, I like my el-cheapo Black and Decker better as there is a much lower learning curve. Hopefully, as I become smarter than the oven, I will like it but right now, I cannot recommend it and now only give it 3 stars.June 2015: I have had this oven for 2 years now and have grown to like it more and increased my rating from 3 to 4 stars. This is the only way I will bake a pizza now. The pizza stone accessory is horrible, but the oven itself is fantastic for baking frozen or fresh pizzas (I put the frozen pizza in while oven is pre-heating). It has been easy to keep clean. I have been able to bake muffins, cookies, cakes, au gratin potatoes, chicken, roasts, nachos, and more. If I try something new, it needs to be watched carefully the first time so that it doesn't get over-cooked, but after that, everything is just fine. I am glad I bought it and can say I have actually recommended it to a friend.

We've only had it a few months. We are in our 70's and it is hard to read the tiny buttons on the front which after only a few months are already wearing off. We have not been thrilled with our Cuisinart purchases as a rule. Probably won't buy more in the future.
Decent - Cuisinart Convection Toaster
December 31, 2016
Ordered this as a gift for my parents because I have the same one, however I purchased mine in store. This online model seems shiner/lighter in color than mine and the buttons writing (temp, etc.) wore off after a few days. Heats quickly, easy use, clear digital settings.

Slightly confusing operation, but a nice toaster oven overall. I love that you can pull out the bottom of the unit and keep it clean.

August 26, 2016
It took a while to figure out how to set the time/temp.; poor instructions. The toaster is a good size on the kitchen counter, but the rack adjustments are not the best. So far, the only things I have made successfully are toasting bread and bagels. Maybe things will improve after I use it longer, but so far it's just been a very expensive toaster. It needs to have more vertical cooking space inside.
needs better instructions very sensitive buttons

It heats up fast I just wish there were better instructions on how to use it still haveing trouble with the timer and other settings.I wanted to set the timer and the buttons are very sensitive turned off the whole oven while trying to set timer and there were no instructions.

Takes *forever* to toast, controls are clunky, convection feels like an afterthought.
August 5, 2016
Having used this now for about a year, I can say that while it does a decent job in "Bake" mode when using the Convection settings, it's really poor performing in other areas. Also it takes about 4m for it to heat up to 360, and my full-size oven takes about 8. It also takes about 8m to toast 2 pieces of (frozen) toast and seems to not heat evenly as the toast often burns toward the back; even in convection mode. The controls are clunky and unresponsive. The "dials" have to be turned several clicks before they register, and then often they over-register and you can't get it on the setting you need. I also think that the Broiler temperature is in accurate and I haven't had any luck broiling things "as normal" in this unit.I would not purchase again and we're considering replacing it already.
That's exactly why I decided to splurge on what was supposed to be one of the best. Never considered the performance any better
April 1, 2016
Convection fan just broke after 3 years. Probably the average life of a Toaster Oven with heavy use, and we did use this one daily for just about anything and everything. That's exactly why I decided to splurge on what was supposed to be one of the best. Never considered the performance any better than average, and now know the reliability isn't either. Over $250 and it doesn't even have an interior light. Look elsewhere if this is your price range.
Convection fan failure
February 13, 2016
We bought the Breville Smart Oven two years ago. Soon after purchase the convection fan began to make a noise. Otherwise the oven worked well. Perhaps the fan noise was part of the breaking-in process, we thought. However, in the fall of 2015 the motor stopped running altogether. The oven could still function, but without the convection feature. Breville was unwilling to replace the entire unit, since it was out of warranty. They offered to repair the oven for a fee of around $120 or to sell us a new one at a 30% discount. We chose that option. I believe that this issue could be fairly common--a design flaw. The support person at Breville was helpful.
Other brands work better.
July 20, 2015
The display has clouded over time and reading the digital information necessary to use the oven has become quite difficult - in under one year of use. When I tried to contact Breville, the phone number online for service (866-Breville) is disconnected and the email submission is a loop that doesn't allow submissions unless you're logged in, but there's nowhere to log in. I paid a lot of money for this toaster oven. As it stands, I'd get a Black and Decker any day and save the money. This one isn't that great in comparison.UPDATE FEB. 2016: The cloudy display is still cloudy - but thankfully has not gotten SO cloudy I can't read it. We use this toaster oven all of the time and the even cooking is still great. Nevertheless, Black and Decker is the next purchase.
There are a few things about this oven that are dangerous
June 3, 2015
I don't understand how Cooks Illustrated could have recommended this item. It's an excellent bagel toaster but not good for much else. It is solid but there are a few design flaws that make it useless and in some cases dangerous. It's supposed to be an oven but it functions only as a toaster.1. The interior is very small. It replaced another that was a little larger on the exterior but regular cookware could fit inside. I have to purchase additional cookware to use this oven.2. The lock that's on the top two levels means that the shelf must be tilted to remove the shelf. If you need to remove a pan from the oven it must be removed before the shelf can be removed. Because the interior is so small a hand can't be placed into the hot oven to grasp the hot cookware.***Tilting the shelf up , as one must do, to remove the cookware spills the hot food into the oven.***3. DANGER: The shelf is not the correct size or the walls are not sufficiently strong. I had one pound of hotdogs on the top shelf and the shelf slipped out of its support and spilled them into the bottom of the oven. They did send an extra shelf because we were not sure that the one provided was the correct size. The shelf needs to be about 1/8 inch wider to better grab the slots for the shelf. The shelf lock that Cooks Illustrated like but which causes the problems can't be removed since they are welded into place.4. We do use it because our other mini-oven broke but I would not purchase another Breville Smart oven again until the engineering improves.
VERY disappointed over how hot it gets
May 20, 2015
It does seem like a well made and well designed unit but I can't believe how hot it gets on the top, sides, back, and front. I have a red burn mark on the side of my arm from brushing against it. Fortunately it does not seem to heat up our countertop or get the cabinet above it very warm. The handle and the controls do not get hot. If this makes sense, it isn't radiating a lot of heat into the room or to objects around it, but the oven itself will be painful to touch. I discovered this when running the 'break-in' cycle for a frozen 12" pizza -- 450F for 20 minutes. Don't know if I will return it, but if I had it to do over again I would not buy it.

A real joy to use-I thought
November 12, 2016
A real joy to use. Who ever designed this knew what they were doing. Very easy to use. It takes a little time to get use to it as it is more efficient and accurate than other brands I had. I would have given this a "10" if it had a light inside. Very high quality, easy to clean even after reheating a pizza that's dripping cheese. Toast comes out perfect, along with bagels and garlic bread. I used it to bake French fries and pork chops and they came out just the way I like. Would highly recommend this to a friend. My 5 Star rating just went to a 2 star. I went to use the defrost function and couldn't see which button to push. After getting a small flash light I noticed that the labels on the other buttons that I used where almost worn off. I only had this for a short time (less Than 2 Months) the buttons labels should have out last the Toaster. Lack of attention to detail.
writing came off of a button
September 1, 2016
Overall I love this toaster oven but I'm a bit annoyed that t's brand new and the writing has come off of one of the buttons. I may try calling to try to fix it. You kind of need to see what the buttons are.
Burns Food
August 15, 2016
We had an older Cuisinart convection toaster oven that lasted for 10 years. We loved it and used it all the time. When it was finally time to get a new one, we ordered this one and we are very disappointed. We have had this one for several months now, and it tends to burn food. Now, we are veteran toaster oven users, so we know that you have to adjust cooking temperatures downward for both toaster ovens and for convection ovens -- and even moreso for convection toaster ovens. Still, we haven't gotten the hang of this one. In order to stop food from burning, sometimes we have to set the temperature at a ridiculously low level, like 175 degrees. And at that temperature, sometimes the inside of the food doesn't get cooked.

The outside of the unit gets very hot everywhere, if we had kids we would have returned it.
Lightweight and perhaps potentially unsafe if you're not careful
March 4, 2016
This is a very lightweight and perhaps potentially dangerous piece of equipment. If you cook with any sort off substantial dish on bottom of oven (9x9 pyrex dish, say, with some potatoes in it) and pull dish out half way to check on it, the oven lifts from the back and tips forward. Also: the oven door doesn't seat firmly when it's closed, though oven does heat quickly to desired temperature.Needless to say, I returned the oven. This model is just not up to Cuisinart standards, I believe. These were the first mishaps I've ever had with any of their ovens. Digital bells and whistles are nice, but the potential tipping hazard outweighs them for me! One can be careful and avoid any possible accident, of course, but a forgetful moment could bring on a bit of trouble.
Get the Breville...
February 1, 2016
If I'd received a working unit, I might be able to give a review of the intended purpose of the product, but the one that was shipped was dead right out of the box. The control panel worked, but the heating elements would not come on, no matter what was tried. Overall, I'd say that for the money the oven seemed a little on the "cheap" side. The plastic undercarriage and legs look & feel flimsy. The control buttons and knob, too, feel very insubstantial and prone to issues -- as if they are a bit "loose" and not very "solid." Right off the bat I noticed that in turning the knob and pressing the buttons, the action sometimes didn't seem to "register" with the mode display. Also wasn't really pleased with the fact that there are not, properly, three different rack positions. Instead, you turn the rack over, in it's middle position, to achieve the upper level. Which, admittedly, might seem like a small detail, but there just seem to be a number of such corners cut, on this machine, that makes it less than worthwhile, for the money.I'd debated a long time between this oven versus the similar Breville model, and bought this one to save some money. I've received the Breville in exchange, now, and can say that it's a much better product. About 90 bucks more, from Amazon, but totally worth it. The Breville is just so much more solid, and the control interface so much more intuitive and positive. It just seems like a quality product that will be a pleasure to use, as opposed to something that will always be a slight disappointment.

Not reliable
January 9, 2017
We purchased a Breville Smart oven in January 2014 because of on line reviews and the features. We do like the ovens functions and size. This oven worked until October 2016 before completely quitting. Because of the size and features we purchased a second one in October 2016. This one quit working after 2 1/2 months. The broil function quit working. This is not very good service from a high priced toaster oven. I am in the process of contacting Breville to see what they will do under warranty. The product is made in China and evidently their quality is not very good. I would not recommend this oven. It should last considerably longer since it is a higher end product and cost is substantial.
Thirty Month Life Span
January 2, 2017
We've just bought our third Smart Oven here at Amazon. Why rate only two stars, yet continue to buy them? The first Smart Oven we broke by putting in a pot too tall for the interior. It broke the upper heating element. The second died of a panel malfunction after two and a half years, the average life of a Breville appliance, it seems. We bought our third because we use this oven every day, often more than once a day, and we like it a lot. Such a shame that they seem to die so soon. Asking a repairman to replace the main panel is close to the cost of a new Smart Oven so now we have three.
Nice toaster oven but beware the control panel
November 5, 2016
Nice toaster oven but beware the control panel. This unit has a history of control panel failures........ My $250 oven had a failure of the panel after 20 months of service! You would expect more from a small appliance. I contacted Breville but heard nothing back from them!
We really loved this item
July 22, 2016
OK, they force the star thing, but wanted to get the attention of potential owners. We really loved this item. Easy to use and works fantastic. However, nowhere in the manual does it warn against using Oven Cleaner on it. Upon trying to clean the glass buildup, we used 'Easy Off' oven cleaner. It dissolved the finish off the door frame, and any overspray also dissolved the finish wherever it went. While we thought the unit was stainless steel of some sort, it appears it is not.In the trash it goes.Thought purchasers should know, and the manufacture should be clear about not using cleaners other than 'non-abrasive'.
First impressions
March 17, 2015
At first glance this looks to be a well made machine. Nice aluminum. After setting up and doing the 15 minute burn in I used the oven twice for some hamburgers and toasted buns. After the buns had finished I noticed that the LCD looks weird. It had already begun to mess up. It was displaying random stuff with the turn of the dials. After a 15 minutes unplugged the display has returned to normal (I have not tried to recreate the issue). The dials feel cheap and flimsy. Sometimes when making selections the screen will move two choices rather then one at a time. So the dials are not calibrated very well. The oven operates very well. I have seen reviews about the temperature being off. I have not yet noticed this. This oven has been out for some time now. I would have thought the company to fix these issues a little more proactively. So, my first impressions are not that high for a machine that cost this much. Price to quality of the product should be higher. 3 of 5 stars. It works well when you don't have to mess with glitchy LCD screens and over sensitive dials.UPDATE:After some more time with the oven I decided to get a thermometer and make sure I was getting the right temperature to see if the other reviews had some truth. To my surprise there is. I have been frequently using the oven to bake between 400-450 degrees Fahrenheit. The thermometer I just purchased reads roughly 100 or more degree cooler than what the ovens display says it should be at when the preheat is completed. With this being said I am going to have to reduce my 3 star rating down to a 2 star rating.Uploaded two photos.
Expected it to last more than just two years....
October 17, 2014
Okay, so I've had the BOV800XL oven for 25 months. I have used it almost every day (with great care) and during that time it has performed flawlessly. I loved this often. Tonight, in the middle of cooking a pizza, the oven just died. I initially thought it was a fuse, but this was not the case. I called Breville customer service, and was offered a 20% discount on a new model or, secondarily, I can send it out and have it repaired for one hundred and twenty dollars. It is obviously out of the one year warranty, so I didn't expect much from customer service. What I *did* expect was this pricey oven to last way more than two years. And for that reason, I just cannot recommend this. Again, while it worked, it was amazing. I remember when toaster ovens lasted at least a decade. Definitely not this one.

Lettering on selection buttons rubbed off after less than 2 months of use. Toast did not brown evenly. Cuisinart customer service was a nightmare to deal with.
Cheap button design
October 11, 2016
After about 30 uses in 40 days, two of the buttons' printed words have worn off, making them unreadable (time and temp). This doesn't render the oven worthless, just annoying for those who don't want to spend time committing their toaster oven buttons to memory or to walk guests through which buttons are which.I would say that additionally, the buttons have an overall cheap feel to them and easily get food stuck in their cracks. Not well designed.
Don't trust it.
August 25, 2016
Door handle is loosening, have not found a way to tighten. Confusing instructions to set temp and Browning setting. Feels very thin. Would not leave this product running on my counter without close supervision.
Buyer beware!
January 3, 2016
I should've sent this back right when it arrived, and now I've missed the return window and I'm stuck with a fairly expensive toaster oven that doesn't heat evenly and has started making a ticking sound every time I use it. I've had Cuisinart small appliances in my kitchen before that I've loved, but the quality of this toaster oven is not what I expected. From day one, the oven burned most things I tried to cook, and even after lowering the temperature 25-50 degrees I've had little luck. You have to change the level of the oven rack often (different levels for baking and toasting) which isn't a big deal unless you forget to change it prior to preheating and then the rack is very hot. It does make good toast, quite quickly, but now that the oven is making a ticking sound it will probably be put in the trash soon which is unfortunate as the product is less than three months old. I will try to contact Cuisinart customer service to see if they'll stand behind this product. Terrible purchase.
Turns itself back on automatically - digital control issue probably.
December 28, 2015
Initially I loved this toaster oven. Digital controls were easy to use. Does a great job in baking biscuits and fairly even toast and the exterior doesn't get as hot as some other models. But after only a week, it started to turn itself back on automatically. I had used it for breakfast, and while cleaning up, I saw that it was back on. So I turned it off, but then after a couple of minutes it was back on again. This happened about 4 times while I watched. I don't know if it would have also turned itself OFF automatically, but not worth the risk of burning my house down to find out. So this one is going back as defective. Too bad.
Sparking on the inside...eeek!
July 31, 2015
The on switch was sparking on the inside from faulty electrical wiring when turned on anything other than warm. Fire hazard!! The box was opened and damaged when I received it, so likely Amazon sent it knowing it was a dud and previously returned. I'm giving the oven another shot...

Poor quality control, on my third replacement oven
February 11, 2016
My experience with this Breville oven has unfortunately not been positive. Given the overwhelming number of positive reviews here, I must be having the worst luck.I'm on my third oven, the first two were replaced by Breville support. The first oven had temp accuracy issues - as verified by two thermometers: an analog oven thermometer as well as a professional thermoworks digital probe thermometer (rated to 700F). The oven was over 15 degrees off the temp I set it at. Further, it could not hit 400F.The second oven was fine with temp control, but its internal fan didn't work. On both bake and roast settings, the fan did not come on. On the first oven, the fan worked just fine.I'm now on my third oven. The fan works fine, but again, as verified by the attached pic, the oven is inaccurate in temp. I've had it running for over 15 minutes and it's over 15 degrees off from the target 400F temp.Breville to this point has been supportive to keep replacing these ovens, but I've just had a very negative experience with a Breville support rep. She claims that the oven is working fine, and that the oven will never sync with the temperatures shown by home thermometers. This is incorrect, as the second synced perfectly, it's just that the fan never worked so I had to send that one back. She transferred me to a supervisor, who again just repeated the party line, and dismissed the accuracy of the thermometers I used.I love the capacity of this oven, and want to love the claimed performance. I'm just not getting the temps that the oven claims.I recommend that you measure your oven temps and hold Breville accountable for their performance. Both the rep and the supervisor dismissed my claims as well as the possibility that quality control could be an issue. I very much appreciate their support policies to replace the ovens, but the bottom line is that each of the three ovens I've gone through have never worked as they should.
Awesome at first. Then, dies and leaves you stranded.
December 22, 2015
I bought two of these. Both died within 6 months and were replaced under warranty. One of the replacements died. Seems really awesome at first, but here's what will happen to you: At the three-to-six month mark, it will quit powering on, with a cryptic error "E1". This means your thermal fuse has died, and you have to send it back to the factory for a replacement. Right about the time the warranty expires or shortly thereafter, the convection fan will quit working. It just buzzes, but it is seized up and doesn't turn. This has happened to each of the units I've owned. Next time, I'll buy the cheap copycats from Waring or Black and Decker... can't believe they couldn't use quality parts in these units, for the price paid.
Does not last
November 24, 2015
The first one I ordered did not work right out of the box. Plug it in and the display would just flash. Return process was smooth and ordered a second one. Worked great for 3 months and then the heating element put off less and less heat until it finally quit. I don't use it every day and just sitting on the counter it takes no abuse. At this price it should last more than a few months.Edit: follow up, just want to give credit to Amazon for their return/refund treatment. I wanted so bad for this oven to work but after two attempts the only reason I'd even consider it is because Amazon has gone over the top in their refund policy. Amazon prime and their treatment of me on refunds is why I continue to order items from them.Pros: it's prettyCons: It doesn't work...
Product broke down after 16 months
September 24, 2015
This oven was bought on May 2014, and it breaks down on September 2015; 4 months after the warranty expired. The bottom heating elements aren't working any more. We are very disappointed at the quality and durability of this product. For something cost $250 we'd expect it to be more durable and a bit long lasting.$250 for less than 16 months of use is just unacceptable. When Breville wants to charge $119 to repair their short lived product, this is ridiculous.
Toxic Smell won't go away
May 31, 2015
Before using the oven with any food in it, my husband and I tried one of the toast settings with out any trays or food in it. The toxic smell that came out was unbearable. We live in a 3,000 sq ft + home and the smell was everywhere. No smoke, just a toxic plastic or oil like smell. We assumed it might be something that would burn off, so we put the oven out doors, under a patio roof and left it on 450 degrees F for 45 minutes. Still smelled, we did that 2 more times for a total of 135 minutes at 450 F, still smells. Called Breville Customer service who was very professional and they were willing to exchange the oven for a new one. I expressed concern that we may encounter the same issue and wanted to know what happens if/then? Customer service told me that we could then send the oven back for a Breville credit / coupon I read other reviews and decided I am returning to Amazon.
Poor quality component/longevity.
August 16, 2014
Unit lasted 11 months. Main selector switch has gone bad. Cannot return. I thought Breville was a premium product. Functioned well when it worked. Too bad. Now pita repair/replace research. Ugh.
