A diamond in the rough

More than ever it is harder to tell what separates a plasma from a Lcd television. I get everything I need out of this television. Yet it is $500 less than its counterpart. If you ever have the choice of getting an Lcd. Get this model. I have never been happier.
LOVE IT!

50" Television Is Great For Gaming
June 5, 2015
I bought this for gaming first and foremost with a small amount of movies and television as a secondary interest. As a gaming television it is a really great television. I play on an Xbox One so a television that runs at 60Hz is perfect so that the frame rate matches up with the refresh rate as best as you can make it. The television has a game mode that allows you to set a lower response time, it's only a toggle in the options menu but the lower the lag the better. There are four HDMI ports and an optical audio port which makes for easy setup with a console and a surround sound system. This is a review for the 50" model only so keep that in mind for the next part. The television has 16 active LED zones which really help with blacks and contrast which is really important if you're gaming in a well lit part of the house. The picture on this television is excellent and can be adjusted to meet any need, from movies to gaming to sports which all require some pretty different settings. Now I don't like to say things like, "it's a really good television for the price", because although the price is lower than other comparable televisions it is a good television regardless of the price. That said, it really is a great gaming television for those, like myself, who take cost into account due to budget restrictions. I've seen other reviews talking about the television making a loud noise but I have no idea what they are talking about. I found the setup to be easy. The hardest things to set up are the apps and the picture; which are software instead of hardware. The television sound is okay for a television like this but a sound bar or some other sound system is recommended for good sound quality. The television comes with a decent array of built in apps which has replaced my Roku and are easy to access and navigate. There is a button in the middle of the remote that will pop up all of your apps on the bottom of the screen. This can be done at any time plus there are three buttons on the remote for access to Netflix, Amazon, and MGo. The apps are the same as the apps on my Roku and Fire TV Stick so once logged in it was easily accessed and navigated. There are quite a few apps to choose from and they can be added or removed from the list at the bottom of the screen from an app menu. The only negative thing I've found so far is the lack of an S-Video port. Overall I find this television to be an excellent gaming television and a great bargain.
Amazing value and superb picture quality
March 22, 2015
Vastly improved picture and customization with most recent firmware update (June 15, 2015). When I originally reviewed this TV, I'd said it exceeded my expectations. Now that gamma has its own setting and the picture profiles have been revised, that's doubly true.Out of the box, the standard picture setting is bright and washed out -- probably meant for brightly-lit showrooms -- but selecting either of the “Calibrated” presets significantly normalizes the picture. I highly recommend picking one of them and adjusting the backlight or gamma setting as necessary for your room’s lighting condition (probably 2.2 or 2.4). This one step alone will satisfy the majority of owners. If you want to tinker further, all of the usual standard settings are present. You can also adjust the intensity of individual colors and/or do a full 11-pt white balance. With the June 15, 2015 update, I had to blitz out my old config since the new update changed the white balance for the better. I don't see any point in pasting my current tweaks anymore because they're the sort of things that depend on room conditions and panel variation. Our TV viewing is solely over-the-air. With our previous set, we had to use a signal amplifier to pull in the local NBC station. The ABC station was choppy at times. With the E500i-B1, NBC generally comes in solidly and the ABC station is perfect.Audio quality is OK. I can see why people would feel the speakers are too quiet. Sound clarity and separation is stellar, but there is no semblance of bass and the volume level probably won’t suffice for large rooms. We have the set in a 14x16 area in a 14x22 room and it’s fine. If you want a more cinematic experience, I’d suggest looking into a highly-rated yet affordable sound bar that offers a subwoofer.Input lag for gaming is very low. I read the various reviews for this series and was hoping to get somewhere in line with the Samsung in the basement. I think this Vizio has even less input lag! I don’t play PC games or modern games in the living room. Instead, I tend to play old-school retro games that weren’t designed with any sort of lag in mind. If there is any delay from button press to when Mario hops or the flipper smacks the ball in Dragon’s Fury, I can’t tell. The included Internet Apps suite is sufficient for my needs. I wish it included SlingTV and MLB.TV, but Amazon, Netflix, Hulu, Vudu, and Youtube are my go-to's and they're all there. The menu response is sluggish. I don't notice any playback issues, however, so Vizio gets a pass from me on this. If you're serious about Internet Apps, you should probably attach a Roku or Chromecast instead, just to get the widest selection.I bought the TV from Amazon. The product box was shipped inside a larger box that was full of cushioning material. I am pleased to report there were no defects evident (not even a single dead pixel).Considering the low price, great features, and excellent picture quality, I am very happy with the E500i-B1.
Hell of a $500 deal
February 20, 2015
UPDATED$10 an inch cannot be beat!So far so good. This is a replacement for our 7 year old 42" Vizio which is still running strong. I just wanted a better picture.Ordered on the 18th, up and running on the 20th - Thanks Amazon!Pros:Lighter than the old setNot much larger physicallyEasy set up with quick connection to our internet, the Roku, the DVD player and the likeGreat picture clarity. Man, you can see the make up on the newscasters facesGood audio, but where are the external speaker connections?Great internal Tuner. We really liked how our older Vizio picked up 50+ broadcast channels. This one may be even better. Too bad that at least 1/2 of the channels here in Santa Clara are Shopping/Ethnic stuff. The Viett Girls are pretty, but I do not speak the language.Total transfer time from the old TV to the new one, 30 minutes. pretty simpleNice small packaging too, but I'm holding on to that for the moment.Cons:Remote is clunky and has to be aimed directly at the right spot to get it to workUser guide is minimal. You can do all sorts of cool stuff with the video levels, but there is no explanation of what to do and why.Summary:For $500 this is a hell of a deal. Clear picture, easy set up and I have had great previous experience with Vizio service, so it is a 4 Star for the moment. I'll follow up in 90 days.

Have an older lcd vizio 32, and had bad luck with seems like every other brand of TV except that one...so we went for this one, I think 50 is about right size, big enough and still easy to move around if needed. After about 3 weeks now, very pleased with it, great picture. Like the 120hz, the overall design is nice and thin, plenty of hdmi jacks, I did put the base on it, which at first glance didn't seem like the best design ever, but once on, does fine. Was able to program remote code to GE universal I use, all good except to change the zoom need TV remote, which is decent but not Exceptional in design, but the overall the TV is... Added: the apps on the this are good too... I have att, just plugged in off router and have no problems with any apps, seem to load decent, no issues... Ain't it strange you get a TV and spend all your time on pandora radio?

October 28, 2014
My wife and I were kind enough to hold on to my brother's Samsung 50" TV while he and his family were moving. We ended up having it for about 5 months. Once he got settled into his new place we gave it back to him and bought this Vizio Smart TV. I was worried that the picture quality would be vastly different, but that was not the case. This TV has great picture quality! As for the Smart TV features, we already had an Apple TV, so I haven't navigated the Smart TV options extensively but the user interface is very intuitive. Connecting to the Wi-Fi was simple as well as the rest of the setup. My wife and I purchased a used one via Amazon Warehouse deals. We couldn't be happier with our purchase. It came in the original box which was obviously not new. However, upon opening the box I was pleasantly surprised to see the TV wrapped just like as if it was brand new. There was not a scratch anywhere to be found on the TV or any of the accessories.
great value
May 12, 2014
this tv is a steal for $600 the picture rivals my Panasonic plasma for a lot less money of course you will need a soundbar or surround system to get decent audio I agree with other reviewers the calibrated picture mode is best standard mode is the energy efficient mode so far no quality control issues that others have mentioned and when switching to a different input eg hdmi 1 to hdmi 2 for 1st time you must set the picture mode again unless you are using standard mode then tv will remember update if you will be viewing tv in a large room with people spread out the picture really suffers from a wide angle update 5/30 amazon app is now working and there is a full review on cnet with advanced picture settings cnet gives this set 4 stars and said best tv for $

Great looking TV
January 19, 2015
Great looking TV. I have had a couple of minor issues. TV locks up when viewing photos from a usb drive. I have had a couple instances where it appeared the TV turned itself off. I will update this post later on if issue continues or doesn't. Could be from a HDMI connected device, but I need to verify that.
I like it!
January 12, 2015
Overall, I like this TV. My daughter has been asking for a TV for years, so I finally gave in. Pros: Several display formats (Normal, 16:9, Zoom, etc.). Pre-programmed and adjustable picture editing. Several apps; not just the seven shown on the box. Cons: Adjustable picture editing can become complex. Despite good picture, still not as sharp as IN-STORE mode. No internet search (Internet Explorer, Mozilla, etc.). Considering the picture quality, apps and price, this is the biggest bang for the buck! Some have complained that the audio isn't that great. The speakers are behind the TV. I have the TV approximately 8 inches from the wall. The sound bounces off of the wall and sounds great. The people who complain about the audio, may have the TV mounted to the wall?
I am very happy with the TV
December 5, 2014
Initial TV received was defective. A 1.5 inch section on the left side of the screen was dark. Vizio was extremely cooperative and sent me a replacement TV which was delivered unpacked and installed by a two-man delivery crew. Only problem was that it took 2 weeks to receive it.Aside from all that, I am very happy with the TV. As stated by others, the remote could be better. The sound is adequate. It should be noted that if you want to to use the analog audio output on an external device as well as the TV, you must set the analog volume to "fixed" not "variable". Otherwise the only way to hear the audio externally is to set the internal speakers to "off" in the menu.During my research prior to purchase, I discovered that it is important to understand what "Internet Capability" means in any of the "Smart" TVs including the Vizio. The Internet capability is limited to the apps that come with the TV. Except for YouTube and the social media sites, all the services are fee based. Most of the TVs do not have a browser which you would need to have full internet access. One of the few that did, (I believe it was a Samsung), had a limited browser. The browser IS NOT capable of using plugins such as Flash which are required to play streaming video. In short, what you are getting with a "Smart" TV is the ability to access social media, as well as access to fee based sites such as Hulu Plus, Netflix, Amazon Prime etc. If you want to play movies from any of the free sites, you'll have to plug your laptop directly into the TV.One additional point, I found the wireless connectivity of the Vizio to be near worthless. A hard wire eithernet connection works fine.

December 4, 2014
It was super easy to set-up and looks great! It has a fantastic picture. I have had no problems with it, though I have not used Netflix or much of the Wifi, except Pandora, which works great. I adjusted the sound based on a website review that had specific settings and it sounds great. So far, so good...
So far so good!
December 1, 2014
I always factor in everything when purchasing high priced electronics, i.e. phones, TVs, laptops. I carefully reviewed the comments on this model on multiple websites. So far this TV has been great. Sound, color, and function are just what I was looking for, especially based on the price of this vs over-priced but also highly-appraised Samsung. If I had the money, I'd had gone with a Samsung, but for the price, this 50" is a great buy.The only real meh/negative comment I have regards the "smart" function. I have to get too far into it, but personally I could have done without the functions on my TV. The remote and apps functions perfectly together, no lag or other bull.A lot of reviews commented on the failures within the first few uses of this model. I have had no problems thus far. Shipping in my case was very well done, and that probably has a lot to do with failures.Definitely recommend this TV if you're looking for a great TV for a decent price.
I'm very happy with this purchase.
November 23, 2014
I've had this TV for about 1 month and I am very pleased with it. The picture is outstanding IMO and I'm coming off a plasma TV that died after 3 years. Plasma has the best picture but it burns a lot of energy. The screen is maximized with a really small frame; there are many brightness, tint, and mode controls to find your best view. The TV only weighs 28 lbs. There are no controls on the TV except an on/off switch. At first I thought that was cheap but I must have used the on-TV controls on my old plasma about 5 times in 3 years so it keeps the cost down for something that is not really necessary. Also, my negatives about it is the stand is static and does not turn, however, you can get an awesome turntable for $10 at Amazon to fix that. The other negative is, although it is a smart TV its wi-fi range is pretty short like more than 30 ft from your router and it won't pic up Netflix, etc., that's the cheap part about it. My router is upstairs and further away, however I have a Roku and get my streaming through it so again not an issue to me.

Good TV but poor wireless connection
July 1, 2015
For the price it is a good tv. The wireless is faulty. It would not work. I bought and extender for my wifi and that did not help. Eventually I bought I long Ethernet cord and ran it under my carpet and connected the TV that way. The TV works perfectly with the Ethernet connection. If I had it to do over I would purchase it again due to the $$ value.
Need a long reach
May 30, 2015
It is to bad they have put the control eye at the very bottom. You have to reach up in the air if you are setting in a chair below the level of the TV to control it. It helps to put a piece of foil to reflect the signal. Other wise it is good TV with the built in apps. I must say I did like my older model better.
It's ok.

We bought this television for my mom who had a 50" LG Plasma for many years, but the picture went out on it recently. Unfortunately all of the newer LG's that I saw did not have a stand in the middle, so they would not fit on her current television stand (which she did not want to replace), so I had heard good things about Vizio and all of the reviews talked about how good the picture was, etc. The television has a very good price, but the picture is very sub-standard in my opinion. I tried changing color, resolution, etc and it just never got much better. Also, with stand television and trying to stretch the picture, you have to change it on every channel it seems. If you select the wide view it doesn't stay that way for all channels, which is how every television I have ever seen before works. It will be an ok television for my 80 year old mom, but all in all this product just doesn't match up with the other name brands such as LG, Samsung, Toshiba, etc.
Good image, sharp
April 21, 2015
Good image, sharp, crisp and deep blacks....but when moving to sides of tv 30 degrees off center, the colors will change. Basically it gets a blueish cast from angled viewing. My unit also has a dead pixel already. If it wasn't such a good price, I would be disappointed. The flaws are the trade off for the price. My 7 year old LG looks better, but I did pay more than 3 times the price for that one.
Nice TV. for about 2 years
April 1, 2015
Nice TV. Good picture. Sound isn't great. So, I bought a sound bar and everything is fine. You can adjust the audio/video synch in one direction, but not the direction I often need it. Lots of HDMI, coax and composite ports. Easy to set up. Comes with a nice stand and wall bracket. Automatic connection to Amazon Prime, Netflix and iHeart Radio. Can connect to lots of other apps. On screen manual.Update: bought January 2, 2015: now getting frequent back-light problems--after only about 2 years. Powers on, but no image on screen.

Vizio with vertical band issue
May 2, 2017
This Smart TV had a good picture quality. The wifi was a bit weak and hard to connect. Unfortunately, after 3 years the picture developed a vertical line through it which has widened making the TV useless. The unit was not moved or misused, always kept on a stand. I would not recommend buying a Vizio after reading some other reviews in which others have had similar problems with vertical lines. I had purchased the extended warranty through Square Trade and it did not cover these vertical lines as they are calling that "damage" although I was just sitting in my chair viewing the TV when the problems began. All in all, the product appeared to be good, but was short-lived.

DO NOT PURCHASE YOUR TV ON AMAZON. The tv itself was great. came in great packaging and the picture was crystal clear. There were times it would not connect to my hulu or pandora but I assumed it was an internet connection issue. I came home one christmas day to find that my tv that I had for only ONE YEAR had no picture but only sound. When the warranty company came to pick it up after about 2 weeks they told me the tv was not fixable. HOW? A brand new tv breaks after only one year and theres no way of fixing it. What could have possibly gone wrong?! ON TOP OF EVERYTHING the warranty was crap. Theyve had my money and tv for almost 2 months now and they arent even sending me back a full refund. I will never buy a tv on amazon again. you're better off going to best buy or another electronic store where if you are having issues you can speak to someone first hand.
Disappointed with Customer Service
August 14, 2015
We have had this tv for 6 months. It is the only tv that we own. It suddenly lost audio and visual....yet still powers on. After trouble shooting multiple times on my own with using manual and online suggestions...I called company. They determined that it was a problem and would do a service call. I never received a call from tech support. So, I called back. They said they had ordered a part and it was on back-order. Waited. Called back. Still never talked to tech support. Customer Service continued to say that part is on back order. That was over two weeks ago. Called again. Customer Service decides it is time to replace the tv since there is no ETA on the "part"....that they THINK they will have to replace. Now it will take 6-10 days for me to hear from next person to SET UP APPOINTMENT to have a "restocked tv" swapped for my old one. We are now looking at probably two more weeks. I am now paying for at least a month of cable....for a tv that is dead. I am disappointed that this is Vizio's version of "Customer Service".
BUYER BEWARE! Stopped working after a year!
July 21, 2015
BUYER BEWARE! I bought this TV a little over a year ago and it was working great until recently, when occasionally it just doesn't turn on at all! I have to unplug it for at least an hour before I can get it to turn on again. Nothing happens on the screen and the power light turns on and just fades away. This is really annoying and now I am going to have to reach out to VIZIO for support which I'm sure will be a pain since it is conveniently JUST after a year after purchase and I'm sure whatever warranty it may have had is expired. Just wanted to share my experience for people interested in this product. I will update once I have contacted VIZIO.

December 7, 2016
I have the 70 inch model. The first one had to be replaced right away because of a black line through it. The one we have has had sound issues since the beginning. We have gone through every reset imaginable. I have the extended warranty. Their solution was to replace the main board. We are now getting it replaced a second time because we did not call back soon enough (we tried to adjust to the distorted sounds) and so they say that must be it. Very dissatisfied with this purchase. We have other Vizios that have performed well.
Power issues
September 17, 2016
Beware. These televisions have problems. I had this set less than a year before it suffered power issues. Specifically once you turn it off the power needed to be completely unplugged and left alone for an hour before it would power up again. Vizio told me I was outside the warranty and offered to "repair" it for $350. What a joke. I checked around on the web and discovered it was a common problem but the company doesn't care. Avoid.
Terrible product from a terrible company. Buyer Beware!
June 17, 2016
50 inch model stopped working in 11 months after using it about 20 times. It was a second TV for our bedroom. My wife, dealing with a new baby, did not mention to me that the TV was not working until a month later. When I called Vizio they said it was out of warranty. After spending a considerable amount of time on the phone, they agreed to do an "out of warranty" repair. They sent out a repairman who changed the internal boards. Two weeks later, the TV stopped working in the same way it originally failed. Vizio said it's not their problem. They offered to sell me another one at the "discounted" price of $375 (Amazon now sells it for $350). Now I have a massive expensive paperweight. I will NEVER buy another Vizio product as long as I live and I recommend that you don't either. Terrible product from a terrible company that won't stand behind it. Buyer beware!
Worked for 13 months.
May 24, 2016
Worked for exactly 13 months. Now it does not respond to input.I have one single input hooked up to an HDMI switcher because the TV ignores all signals from the remote after the first few seconds. If I want to turn the volume up or down I have to unplug the device, plug it back it, power it on, turn the volume up (or down) then hit the 'exit' button, otherwise the on screen menu will stay up covering the video content until I reboot it again.I should've saved up and bought a Samsung or LG or something else. I guess its true what they say, the poor man always buys twice.
As an engineer I was extremely dubious as to the likely hood of this doing any good, and it didn't
March 28, 2015
Had problems with this TV turning itself off randomly from the 2nd day I had it. Contacted Visio who, even though I had registered the TV for warranty, had me look up my purchase date and TV serial number off the TV. They then had me return the TV to the factory settings. As an engineer I was extremely dubious as to the likely hood of this doing any good, and it didn't. A couple of weeks later after the TV had the same problem 3 more times I contacted Visio again. They again put me through the same ringer and then wouldn't tell me what the final outcome would be until I copied receipts and sent it to them. Enough run around! I gave up and returned the TV to Amazon, who were fantastic about the return. Picked it up at my door the next day. I am now gun shy on buying the same TV again. So while I give Vizio a meager 1 star for the TV and abysmal customer service, I would give Amazon 5 stars for the way they treat me as a customer.
Sudden LED failure.
December 28, 2014
I purchased this TV on June 5th. Around December 23rd, it suddenly developed a vertical black line with a circle at the bottom. The vizio Customer Service folks informed me that it must have sustained an impact (it had not), then informed me that I refused to believe the explanation and there would be no replacement under their limited warranty. Prior to this, I was satisfied with the TV, but a black line in the middle makes it useless, and the Vizio Customer Service folks calling me a liar was a less-than-pleasant experience.Upon contacting Amazon, they promptly offered up a replacement TV. That was refreshing.
