Windows Vista system is now running Windows 10
May 5, 2016
I'm writing this review to tell a short story. I bought a windows Vista system from Costco around 7 years back. (With a very good configuration HP a6857c I think). But recently had issues with lot of applications became non-compatible. So I thought of upgrading the system to windows 7 and then to 8.1 after that to 10 if my system is compatible. This version is eligible for free upgrades. I could quickly do clean install of windows 7 and all my old files are saved in folder (windows. Old). I’ve activated the software using my touch phone. After an hour, I’ve tried to update to windows 10 directly, skipping 8.1. However some of the steps like “Looking for updates” have taken many hours… (I let it run entire night). Took almost a day. (In between some steps, I had good night sleep and a work day!!). But finally it installed everything right. So in around 24Hrs, old windows Vista system is now running Windows10 with no issues, in fact much better .
Perfect. I received my new Windows 7
September 12, 2015
Perfect. I received my new Windows 7. With the help of Microsoft, everything was backed up. Loaded windows 7. 320 updates took awhile, then loading back up from a flash drive. P-755 Satellite Laptop by Toshiba, works awesome. Vey pleased a Windows 7 Disk was in stock . To answer some question's I've read. " Yes, this is an Upgrade., Yes, it does wipe clean your hard drive if installed. "I was recommended to pick up a couple 16gb flash drives. " Back things up. Document's, Music, Pictures, Important Programs,. " If not sure, bring over a friend that knows how to do this. If still not sure, you can use Microsoft Support, " Like I did "This was too important. Malware , and 2 viruses damaged my operating system. " Windows 7 " Microsoft Support took over by remote, and by phone. Laptop runs awesome. Thanks a lot Amazon , for stocking this product.....
Great OS, free upgrade to windows 10 for 1st year.
March 9, 2015
It's windows 7, nuff said. You'll be comfortable in this OS is you're coming from xp or vista, and I suggest it as an upgrade to both, and instead of windows 8. As an added bonus, you'll get a few upgrade to windows 10 on release.
Original software and packaging.
February 28, 2015
I bought this after a week of calling HP to get my Windows 7 product key released because HP was blocking it, not Microsoft as they so wanted me to believe. Hp wanted me to buy their super special technical support package for "valued" customers such as myself that came to a whopping total of $265.39 for a year of "support". I declined (hung up on HP technical support) and bought this product instead. I did a complete wipe of my system and got the HP crap off my system that ate away at my memory and loaded this in. I had no issues with the setup wizard or entering in my product key. Just an FYI, the product key that is included on the package is super tiny. I had to break out my husband's magnifying glass just to be able to see it. I will be keeping this safe and in the future will not be buying HP systems due to the fact they will block product keys and extort more money out of consumers that don't know any better.
Works for Boot Camp on a mac.
January 13, 2015
This is a full version of Windows 7 Home Premium and worked perfectly for running Boot Camp on my Mac. If you are looking to add the windows environment on your Mac using Boot Camp, I can tell you this version of Windows worked well for me. You will need to add a separate wireless antenna (like a usb stick) because the Windows drivers only recognize a few of the hardware items in the Mac. Didn't recognize the internal wireless adapter, nor the internal speakers. It does recognize the CAT5 slot for a wired connection and all of the usb slots. It did not recognize the thunderbolt slot.
Works great for building a pc or in bootcamp
February 28, 2014
I used this to install on bootcamp for my mac book pro 15 retina. It came in a little paper and installed quickly. No problems.

Niice addition to a custom build
September 13, 2017
I know people don't use these things much anymore since flash drives have all but replaced them but with a new custom build computer I figure whats another $20 for a nice DVD ROM that I still find useful on occasion i.e. hardware drivers still come on those little CD's, all of my MB drivers came on CD and I've still got movies on CD etc.... Glad to have it and it works well.
Works Well!
July 5, 2017
Still using it to this day! I've used it to play music, install games, and even burned countless CD's on it and it still works well! Only complaint is that it has an audible whirring noise when it first starts up. Kind of annoying but other than that it's cool!
I love the Power to go 8
April 29, 2017
I love the Power to go 8, software that comes with this DVD optical drive. Power to go 8 software has a feature that lets you mount a ISO or disc image onto your computer in windows 10 and the mount is recognized as if I had the actual DVD or CD in this Asus optical drive thus allowing to run the app or program or game that would normally require a physical disc to be inserted into the Asus optical drive. This Asus optical drive is very dependable and well built.
Perfect, no complaints
February 9, 2016
Even though DVDs are becoming more and more obsolite, I thought it would be nice to include one in my PC build.Pros:-not much to say, works perfectly no complaintsCons:-can get REALLY loud sometimes, but isn't a big dealThis product is pretty straight foreward. Uses one SATA data connector and one SATA power connector. It worked with no problems for me. Just lock it into place, put in the cables, and you're good to go.
Replaced an old PATA drive wonderfully!
August 13, 2015
Purchased this Asus DRW-24B1ST drive to replace the old standard DELL PATA DVD-RW in a XPS 400 system currently running Windows 10 (Home-32bit/4GigRAM). Installation notes: I had to buy a Molex to SATA power adapter and looked around for a spare SATA data cable that I had laying around. After the new product was installed and system powered on I went into BIOS and activated the SATA port and deactivated the PATA drive. I tested this drive by copying files to a DVD+R disk. Windows 10 recognized and provided drivers for this new drive and was able to use it right away. I did not install any of the 'Green' technology software from a CD that comes with it however. The drive I received already had the latest firmware installed.
Used to install Windows 7 on new PC build
January 23, 2015
Great drive. The only reason I bought it for was just to install an OS on my new PC build. It's a bit noisy but I wasn't sitting watching paint dry while the OS did its thing so I didn't take notice after leaving. I'll probably use it to install some other programs and what not and its great for the price. Just make sure you buy from a reliable vendors. Check their reviews!!! Can't stress that.

It fit and worked perfectly, and has held up well. Fit perfectly and has performed flawlessly.
July 13, 2017
My enterprising son decided to build his own gaming computer. He went online, found all the parts he needed and we proceeded to order them. This product has held up to daily game playing and was easy to install for a 12 year old.
Reliable!
July 5, 2017
This HDD is great! I've used it to hold games, my OS, and other information over the years. No mechanical failures to note and it still passes the S.M.A.R.T. test despite countless reading and writing on the platter. Great product even though it's the "old model"
I bought one of these Seagate 1TB drives years ago ...
June 14, 2017
I bought one of these Seagate 1TB drives years ago for my XP computer. Over the years, as I've upgraded to Windows 7, Windows 10 and Ubuntu (Linux), I have installed the operating systems on a new Seagate 1TB drive each time. Since some of the older software will not work on the new operating systems, I have a 51/4" hot swap drive bay for the 31/2" hard drives. This provides me the option of running the different operating systems on the same PC. I could have upgraded to a newer version of the Seagate drive, but this model has been extremely reliable. It suites my purposes, and as the old adage goes ..., "If it ain't broke don't fix it".
Solid Drive
March 30, 2016
Easy to install right out of the box. Plug and Play, was recognized right away. haven't had any problems in the time I've had this drive in operation. Very pleased so far.Seagate was the going drive even in the early 1980's. Long before Western Digital came along. I prefer Seagate over WD because of their long years of experience with Hard Drives and reliability. I have had too many WD drive fail on me. Fast Writes & Reads (176mb/184mb)- 2X1TB Raid 0 Performance (340mb/380mb)- Affordable- Reliable BrandOther Thoughts: Very impressed with the performance of this drives. It's amazing how much hard drives have improved over the years.I ran this on Raid 0 on a Mac Pro with a SATA II Interface and was surprised at the read and write performance. Now obviously an SSD is still going to be faster in many respects, but I honesty, I'm super happy I chose this over an SSD simply because of the storage space.I've owned an SSD, just so everyone knows. So I'm aware of the amazing speeds, but for those who are price conscious and need more storage this is a great alternative.Seagate 1TB Desktop HDD SATA 6Gb/s 64MB Cache 3.5-Inch Internal Bare Drive (ST1000DM003)
Great value for the price
March 10, 2016
It's a 1TB hard drive. Not much more to say. It's fast and reliable so far - grabbed 2 of these for my video rendering server and they're holding up quite well.Quiet and thin, since they're only 1TB.Great value for the price.
Not much to say. It works well.
October 5, 2013
Seagate has been my goto hard drive choice for 20+ years. I've never had a failure, though it could happen tomorrow so I do back up regularly. But my backup is to external hard drives which are themselves Seagate. It is not that I haven't used other brands; especially Maxtor, Western Digital, Hitachi. The only other brand with which I've never had a failure is the Hitachi.I should add that Seagate bought Maxtor some years ago, but my failure drives were prior to that. I did have a failed WD drive just a couple months ago. That computer had four drives and all had operated flawlessly for four years. This Seagate is the replacement for that one (Though I put them all in a new, much faster computer.)

Worked For What I Needed...
September 1, 2016
I bought this to run in Parallels on my Mac Book Pro, because I needed to have a windows OS available for school work, and a personal work project. This provided the functionality that I needed, but Windows running on a Mac is not the same as a native Windows machine. It is very difficult to use keyboard shortcuts, because they don't translate to the Mac keyboard. After about a year and a half of using the Mac with Windows I decided to switch back over to a windows machine. One of the reasons for this, aside from what I already mentioned, is the fact that my papers for school needed to be formatted as a Word document, which required that I either write the paper in Word or export it to Word. I chose the former, but this then required me to go into windows, open up the document and verfy that the formatting was okay for submission. All of that said, now that I have a PC machine with a touch screen, I prefer Windows 10.
Like Windows XP except more stable, friendly and a nice GUI
December 1, 2015
It's windows 7. Take from that what you will. I am mostly a linux guy but this is my favorite version of windows by far. It is stable and has a comfortable UI. Doesn't force you to update like Windows 10 does. Doesn't try to make use its mobile-apps-for-desktop the way windows 8 did. Isn't a piece of crap like Vista or Windows ME where it is incompatible with drivers. Actually a lot of drivers work well on install, something Windows XP didn't do for me. That's what I would compare it to the most: Windows 7 is like a better version of Windows XP.
Nice, but please help to upgrade or reserve Windows 10 version
July 29, 2015
Love it, but I bought the windows 7 on the basis that I'll easily find the free upgrade to Windows 10, or at least reserve it, but I just couldn'tfind the way to do so :(although, my system is up to date, and no additional updating was required, yet still see that icon on the right bottom corner of the desktop.
Make sure you have the correct version, 32 or 64 bit!

Works, no install issues, just want to remind people to get the correct version, 32 or 64 bit
Win 7 - Learning Required
July 12, 2014
This product was delivered on time and worked as expected. I did not want to upgrade; but, was required to do so or purchase a new workstation with another operating system (other than Win XP) already installed. It was easy to install Win 7; however, other set ups, i.e. Internet access and document management brought a couple of challenges. Overall, this product was OK. Now, I need to determine how to use it.
Installed on MacBook Air 2013 model OSX Mavericks
May 14, 2014
I tried installing it as a Bootcamp partition but that was a nightmare. LOTS written on forums about the problems but basically Win 7 doesn't have the drivers for USB 3.0 so it won't read the necessary files that download from Microsoft and you have to install on a USB flash drive. There are hacks that have worked for some people, including splitting the install between Bootcamp's process and a VMware Fusion trial but nothing worked for me. I've been a desktop computer techie since 1977 so I have a clue. Now the good news - a stress test of sorts. I installed this product into VMware Fusion 6 and it installed easily and works fine, for a Windows O/S. I allocated 2 cores of the Mac's i5 2 core processor and 7 GB of the Mac's 8 GB to Windows. My wife, a business intelligence analyst, was able to load a huge data file into Windows and work with Tableau and Excel for data analytics. There was plenty of RAM and processing power. She went to her Mac desktops and opened Wizard for Mac, a data analytics program, mail, and a few browser windows. All of those worked well while the Windows virtual machine was still active. We're amazed at the Mac's and Fusion's performance! I see no need for Bootcamp unless you are doing some heavy 3D computer graphics or video rendering. You should be on the MacBook Pro for that anyway, or better yet that amazing new Mac Pro!

March 28, 2017
This is an oem product which means it does not come in a box and there is no support for it such as firmware updates from a Asus's website. Still you can't beat the price with all the features the drive has. Spins up a disk and reads it in a jiffy A+
Gets the job done at a very fair price. So far, so good.
March 15, 2017
Does what it is supposed to do at a very reasonable price. Time will tell how durable the product is. I burn a few disks every week. Trial run was good - - no problems. Unit is noisy, but most are.
Cables Not Included, Great Price
June 21, 2016
Purchased this for the sole purpose of playing some old games (Halo, Age of Empires, War, etc), so I can't speak to its burn speeds or anything like that although the other reviewers of this product have put together fairly comprehensive statistics. Works fine, was easy to install, reads discs, does what it's supposed to do.If you are a first time builder be aware that this product doesn't come with instructions, manuals, or really even packaging. It doesn't come with cables either. I sort of overlooked the cable thing on accident, although no where in the description does it say it comes with cables so that was my fault. Thankfully we have plenty of SATA cables lying around from builds so it was a non-issue. It's a great price and if you think you can get away without someone holding your hand every step of the way through installation, it's worth the savings.

December 1, 2014
Replaced a dying Lite-On with this.Works great. Used it a myriad of times and no problems whatsoever.I was a bit disappointed when I noticed it was made in China as I was expecting a different Asian manufacturing country, but it seems like everything is made there now... especially if you're hunting for cheap prices. I hope the made in China moniker proves me wrong this time as it seems to me that the vast majority of Chinese products are destined for the garbage can/door stop because they break so quickly.I've used many ASUS products in the past and have always enjoyed exemplary service from them. Mostly motherboards, but the odd "other" product here and there. ASUS brand motherboards are hard to beat, so I decided that this drive must be in the same boat. So far... so good.
This does fit the newer Apple Mac Pro Desktop.
October 17, 2013
Some people who have MacPro desktop machines actually need and use the two optical drive bays they come with. The older machines from G5 PPC through the earlier Intel machines all used the same superdrive, but with the later Intel machines went with a Serial ATA optical drive, but do not sell them for the second bay. They will charge a lot of money and fit one for you, but that leaves you without your Mac for some time, or there is an alternative: As an experiment I purchased this inexpensive optical drive and played with it for half an hour - the front panel of the drawer needs removing - from below, it comes off easily, then fit it to the carrier, in the lower bay with the screws provided by Mac on the carrier, plug in the double SATA cable, long one to the top bay, short one to the lower bay, then slot them in, replace the side panel, and boot up. Both Mountain Lion, and the preferable Snow Leopard recognise the drive, and without the front drawer panel, it will correctly open the case door to allow the drawer out.I recorded a complex movie from the upper drive onto the lower and it worked flawlessly, good copy with nothing unexpected. I deleted it, and wrote over with some source code, which ran perfectly, then deleted it again, and cleared the disc. All that I did worked as I expected it to, meaning that I do not need to buy a more expensive optical drive to fit, now I know it does. I had expected to do that it the inexpensive one fit and worked, but it is good enough for the purpose I have for the lower bay.I will be telling all of my Mac friends that they too can have a lower bay drive for $22. (Apple quoted me a price of $150 - $200 to fit one for me. It takes less than half an hour even with removing the drawer front panel. )Fitting this drive, or any other will NOT void the Apple warranty or the Apple Care Service Plan.

Lots of room!
June 9, 2017
Works exceptionally well! If I had realized that the SATA 3 was backwards compatible with SATA 2 controllers I would have done that instead. That aside, 1 terabyte drive for the money I spent? Good deal here. if you need a upgrade in storage on your computers and this is compatible.. I would strongly suggest it
Came with SMART indicator 195 already near failing.
November 28, 2016
After receiving the drive, I installed it in a refurbished computer, and installed Fedora 25 in UEFI mode with no problems. Then I checked the drive health with SMART. The surface scan found no errors, and most SMART indicators showed "new" levels. However, attribute 195 shows 4% 1 Raw_Read_Error_Rate 0x000f 072 069 006 Pre-fail Always - 17959705 9 Power_On_Hours 0x0032 100 100 000 Old_age Always - 22195 Hardware_ECC_Recovered 0x001a 004 004 000 Old_age Always - 17959705I'm not sure if this a bug, or a defective drive, but one would think that SMART would be checked automatically on the way out the factory door.
Decent drive for the price
March 18, 2016
I don't see how everyone is saying this drive has crashed on them in such catastrophic ways. Since I've owned this drive, it's done nothing but work as described. Of course being a standard magnetic HDD, it's not lightning fast by any means, but that's what Solid State Drives are for. Now, I haven't used this drive for RAID or any other super intensive process, but It is used as my default data drive. I'm constantly writing, reading, and removing data from it. For the price, i'd say it's worth it and it can hold it's own against other manufacturers. You're not going to find an out of this work HDD for less, and this will more than get you by, unless as previously mentioned, your doing very intensive things with it.
Pretty good HDD.
March 15, 2016
I bought this at the end of last year after having my Western Digital Blue 500GB HDD since 2012, and was in need of a new drive, out of the box the Seagate 1TB was only half the thickness of the WD 500GB and was a bit lighter, not surprising considering the advances seagate has made over the years, drive went in fine. The drive works well and has been a great upgrade for my PC, though one thing that bothers me is it's "head parking" feature that will park the read/write head when nothing is being written to the disk, at times it gives the impression that the HDD is dying it's quite a useless feature in my opinion seeing as it actually will shorten the life of the drive just to save pennies from your power bill. All in all though it's a great drive.
Reliable, large, quiet
March 24, 2015
As hard drives grow larger and larger, the one fear I always have is reliability. It was one thing to lose a few hundred gigabytes of information, but something entirely different when you lose a terabyte of photos, movies, games, and other information important to your spouse (hint, hint). I am happy to report that Seagate makes a quality product that has not had any issues since first purchased and installed in our system. Of course, this does not alleviate my need to backup my data on an external system (bigger hint), but I am not concerned that my day-to-day operations will be lost because of faulty technology.A few years back, the hard drive industry was in a race for speed (reported in rotations per minute - RPMs) and size (reported in bytes - MB, GB, TB, etc). While this led to some amazing advertising claims, we really never saw the type of increases that have come recently. Since the first SSD (solid-state drive) was introduced, manufacturers have finally divided their focus - to our benefit. Higher capacities (which do not require amazing speed to read/write) are becoming cheaper and cheaper to acquire in HDDs - while faster loads of the operating system (O/S) and software are being offered by SSDs. Unless your computer is space limited, it is advisable to have both - some things are not better when mixed together.Overall, if you're looking for an affordable high capacity hard drive, then Seagate fits the bill. It is outfitted with a 6Gb/s connector (which, if supported by your motherboard, is adequate for data transfer) and 64MB of on-drive cache - allowing the drive to better handle data transfers, as it spins and finds the data to feed to the system. I have a large collection of movies, games, and photos and still have plenty of room on this drive. I keep my O/S and other software on my SSD - so if/when I decide to finally upgrade from 1TB to the next, bigger drive - I can simply copy the data from this one to the new one - without any other issues. But always remember - as noted before - make off-machine backups of your important data.
Good Drive for the Money
December 28, 2014
A mirrored 1T drive in my NAS was failing and I needed a replacement. This worked perfectly, no installation issues and went RAID the first attempt. Would recommend as a replacement in a mirrored system. Does not come cluttered with somebody's idea of an idiot proof media storage device. Has been running 4 months with no errors and excellent system health. Would recommend at 5 stars but it was a replacement for a 3 year old Seagate drive that failed!

Only bought it for the memory usage increase.
June 25, 2017
It's ok! Same functionality as the 32 bit version, except MagicJack works poorly with it. It gave me the chance to increase my usable memory due to the limitations of the 32 bit 2Gb maximum memory usage that the 32 bit Windows 7 has. 3.2 GB is better for gaming online. That is really the only reason I bought it and it does do that!! Soooo it's OK, only. Nothing to write home about.
and it was easy to install
May 3, 2016
It's okay. I bought this for a custom build I did, and it was easy to install. I did this because I got tired of buying gaming computers that didn't come with a installation disk, or you got charged extra for one. The funny part is that without the serial number of the windows version you're using you have to jump through all kinds of hoops to get it reinstalled. With this option I can install it whenever I want on any HD I want without dealing with microsoft directly.
I hate Windows 8
January 1, 2015
I was already familiar with Windows 7. This copy was an extra to be installed on the Lenovo 500S computer that I purchased at Amazon. the Lenovo 500S came with Windows 8.1 installed on it. I hate Windows 8.1. It is the most difficult operating system I have ever run into. However, when trying to install Windows 7.0 on the Lenovo 500S, I found out that you have to install it where the 8.1 is installed and all your files would be lost. Therefore I recovered what had been written over and re-installed Windows 8.1, My wife uses that computer and it is adequate for what she does on the computer.
Be Prepared
August 21, 2014
Used for a 3 yr old HP desktop. HP would NOT provide a copy of the Win 7 OS which came with it, so when we ran into issues with the system and a reload was required,,,, I had to purchase this.Pros:- its the Win 7 OS and it works.Cons:- Contains no drivers for installation. So it wouldn't even recognize the onboard network controller. I had to determine the system board and download specific drivers for the network call and install via USB. Once this was done and rebooted the system would see my network. This was a huge waste of time.- OLD version of the OS. Took several hours to download and install the massive number of updates required. The first batch was over 200 and after each required reboot, a new list of 50 or 60 patches was required. I've installed a new OS on dozens of machines,,, this one was the most labor intensive.- Disc partitioning was a nightmare. My C: drive had 3 partitions. This install provided the option to remove the partitions and reformat, but when I would, it would fail saying the drive wasn't in the correct file format. This is incorrect since the HD was formatted by Win 7 previously. In the end I solved this by by-passing a step in the menu options. This was not documented nor intuitive,,,, I'd tried everything else and just started making selections.- Finally - this is a one use option. You can't re-install on the same PC without paying MS for assistance. Which sucks.End result - its working, but it was a pain. I don't know if any other versions of Win 7 on here would be as problematic or not.
Win 7 Home Premium OS OEM
April 23, 2014
If your old OS is Win Vista Ultimate like mine, be prepared to back up all files in your pc before switching to Win 7 Home Premium. They're not compatible. Then, be prepared to re-install all your pc MB and depending on the speed of your CPU, DSL connection can take another 5 hrs to upgrade your new OS software. This is my experience. Transition is not smooth. I'm having second thought upgrading my other perfectly running pc with Win XP Pro. So much little hassles that become big hassles if you can't find old CD drivers to re-install. You have to download MS Essentials if you want email too cause the Home Premium doesn't have it. There's also hassle installing the download because Microsoft want your personal information. I don't know if Win 7 Pro, a more expensive OS is less hassle to install. Just my personal experience with Win 7 Home OEM.

I used to have XP, and I thought it was a great program. When I heard that Microsoft, as of midnight 4/8/14, it would only protect my data with a program that had 64 bit, I was forced to buy a program that met their criteria. In many ways Window 7 is much better then XP, with the exception that I found out after installing the program, that could not open any data that I had with XP. I'm a writer, and I don't have access to my work, and book. I'm attempting to use the instructions offered by the tutoring feature, but it is very difficult to follow, too many loops to jump through. Another problem I discover is that with Window 7 came two files that are very dangerous to have in a PC. "Save The Children By We Care, and Real Time Protector." I tried to delete them but I was not able. I called Norton Security to see if they could delete them. They could not delete the two files. As a result I am caught between a rock, and a hard place, no access to my XP Files, and inheritance of two dangerous files. All this, just because I had to change programs to have a safe programs in my PC. Tony J. Moraga, 505 856 8227. I am a long time customer of yours.

Good basic DVD drive
May 1, 2017
Good basic DVD drive. I was worried after receiving it only placed in a plastic wrapper - no box, not even bubble wrap. It works though, and the price is right. I would prefer to receive electronics properly packaged though.
Died a lot faster than my LITE-ON
March 2, 2017
Product died in 3 months. Only writes half of DVDs and then stops saying drive failure. Other drives work fine. Somehow cant get Asus support to initiate a return? Filled out the return on their site... still no reply a month later.
Software is useless.
December 3, 2016
seems nice enough. But the accompanying disc included an application for using the drive for burning discs. Nice. So I installed it. Then it asked for a serial number...? There's no serial number to be found on the disc sleeve...the box it came in went in the trash right away. Nor is there ajnything on the disc itself. So the software is useless.
Its great, no SATA cable though
October 24, 2016
I have to say, it looks great, but be forwarned everyone looking to buy this CD tray, it does not come with a SATA cable with the package, it arrived in just plain bubble wrap, which I am indifferent about.I have to say I would be giving it 4 stars if it weren't for the actual packaging and the no SATA cable coming with it.So as long as you understand that, it fits perfectly fine inside my case and was easy to install!
First picky burner I've ever had. Doesn't like the +R media I picked up. Guess I will try -R
January 20, 2016
Of the dozens of DVD drives I've owned over the years, this is the first picky one I've ever had. Works well with some older DVD media I have left. At first I thought it was a dud, as the stack of +R Verbatim DVD media I picked up at the same time is hit or miss success rate. They were the top selling +R media on Amazon, thought new drive + new disks would equal success.

January 3, 2016
Does anyone els have Windows 10 and still have this item work for then because I got Windows 10 awhile ago and ever since I got it. I can not play movies or CDs bought this item a long time ago when I was getting parts for my computer. But ever since I got Windows 10 it hasn't worked. With that being said can anyone tell me if there is a DVD drive that works with Windows 10.

It's pretty good
September 30, 2017
It works but it's SOOOO loud. Whenever I play a game I always hear a little sound coming from it. I know it's not damaged because it's been doing it since the beginning and I've run a few tests but still, it's pretty annoying.
$60 wasted.
July 18, 2016
Circumstances prevented me from using the drive very much before it was broken. The plastic guard around the connection points broke, leaving exposed pins and no real way of ensuring a secure connection when plugging in a SATA cable. This isn't something that I can have fixed, so I had to discard the drive. I wish the plastic had been a little stronger on mine, but at the end of the day, it's my fault for breaking it. $60 wasted.
R-A-I-D!!!!
June 21, 2015
Purchased 3 for recent system upgrade that turned in to a "while your at it, might as well" complete new system build.2 drives used as a mirrored system drive and 1 drive as a backup cold spare. After about 2 weeks I started seeing some random system stability issues that quickly progressed.1 drive failed in a little less then 3 weeks of up time.Sending the dead drive back to Seaget for warranty replacement. No data lose! thanks to the RAID implementation on an MSI z95 PC Mate m/b and Intel rapid storage tech software.Recovery was painless it took about 2 hours to rebuild the 0.9 1TB volume with about 180B used. A lot less time and effort if I'd had to rebuild the system volume from scratch.I hadn't enabled "hot plug" in the m/b bios so I had to power down to swap drives. All important files and data are stored on a Qnap NAS. iSCSI volumes are awesome!
Great hard drive, fast and quiet. But i got a defective one
June 16, 2015
Perfect hard drive! Quiet, fast, and well made. It's also thinner than the average 3.5" HDD, which is pretty neat.Only issue, I am one of the few unlucky buyers to receive a defective drive. It keeps randomly powering down and spinning back up in the middle of doing something. And after a few days of that, my pc has gone completely corrupted and no longer useable. Luckily it was bought from amazon so I get a great return service. I will buy another one exactly the same, I trust I just got a rare bad one, which will happen sometimes. Nothing in the world is 100% perfect!
Died after 40 days
September 21, 2014
This drive was nice while it lasted. However, it died after about 40 days of intermittent use on my desktop PC.Everything was fine and then one day, I heard this horrible clanking noise. It sounded so bad I had a hard time accepting that it was coming from my PC, I thought it was something outside.I then started getting I/O errors and realized my worst fear: my new HD was toast.I put it in the freezer a few times since that is supposed to help with spindle issues (long enough to recover some data anyways) and managed to recover most of my data to another drive.I am currently in the process of RMAing the drive to Seagate (since it is just outside of Amazon's replacement window). However, I'm probably done with Seagate. I still have the box from my last Seagate that failed. If you look at HD reliability studies, you'll find Seagate is generally the worst.
Excessive Drive Case Vibrations
February 6, 2012
Installed the Barracuda ST1000DM003 drive bought from Amazon into a Dell Studio XPS PC a couple of days ago. The drive works fine but there is excessive vibrations from the drive case. These vibrations were tranfered to the PC case via the mounting cage. The vibrations can be felt by touching the PC case. Not only it creates a low frequency rumble but also the vibrations are coupled to the desk and can be felt on my Logitech wireless mouse. Move the PC onto the floor, the low frequency rumble can still be heard but at least the tingling vibrations on the desk and mouse are gone. The original older ST32000641AS in the PC does not have this vibrational problem. No reply from Seagate tech support as yet if I had received a defective unit. There is a point of merit for its power management. If the drive is not accessed for sometime, it appears to go into an idle mood and the PC is quiet even the processor, drive C, and graphics card are in used.Received a reply from Seagate Tech Support, they did not address the vibration and noise problem but instead they claimed they have no power management on their drives. Their technical support competence is disappointing!

... item it was originally part of so it is useless to
July 11, 2017
this came from another appliance and did not work in any of my computers because it has a chip of some sort for the item it was originally part of so it is useless to me
I've had many problems trying to get it installed on. see above .
February 22, 2016
I've had many problems trying to get it installed on my Mac. Tried partitioning the hard drive using Boot Camp and Mac locked up and I bought new hard drive from Apple. Phone support was of no useNow trying to get installed using Parallels latest addition but still have not got it installed. Will try one more time with Parallels support. Hope I can get someone who speaks English. Now 4/20/16 wants to validate and says my windows 7 is not valid. Can't use and I need to uninstall and return. This is MOST frustrating experience I have had and iI will never deal with Microsoft products again. Can return the windows 7 and get a refund.???
Maybe issue with either older AMD motherboards or the disc including non compatible MS updates
September 26, 2015
This particular copy of the OS would load initially BUT after all was set up, it could not retrieve the online updates as some sort of issue with included on disc update was locking up scanning. Did it five separate times all with same results on a 6yrs old AMD dual core (939) 8M memory motherboard. Finally before returning it I tried an install disc from another build in 2010 that although looks the same did load identically and I just used the new ID numbers I had from Microsoft phone in registration the last five attempts. This time when hooked to Internet it started to download 207 updates which was expected for anew Win7 install. I had to stop the automatic update and switch to manual to find the KB# that was causing issues for me. All is well now but have it set for no auto updates and have to screen what comes across. PS - after all was updated and working, made an system image disc so if I need to restore back to initial install, very easy.
No legal iso file for this version of Windows. Must own a DVD drive.
May 16, 2015
I was very frustrated to learn that Microsoft has removed all iso style files from the web for this version of Windows 7. Windows 7 Pro iso files can be downloaded, but not the Home version. The sole use for this file is so you can install from a USB stick insted of a DVD.I did not have a working DVD and wanted to do the installation just using a file off the internet and the software key. I did not want to steal a copy off of the web that might be infected with malware. I wanted to purchase and upgrade even if it cost me $50. I called Microsoft regarding how to pay for an upgrade to Windows Pro from Windows home and the manager said she could not help me. I had to buy a new DVD drive to install Windows. To make matters worse, my DVD drive appeared to be working, so I was not sure that there was not some other problem with the build like a bad memory stick. The added stress and lack of concern for their customers is very much the on par with Microsofts older reputation. The change over to a cloud based system with no rules that make it impossible to do an install will be a welcome change if it finally happens.
Does not work on machines with over 16GB RAM
April 29, 2015
I bought this to do a clean install on my desktop PC. Unfortunately, the product page did not clarify something that's very important: Win7 Home Premium will only enable a maximum of 16GB of RAM, which renders this software useless for my 32GB system. Furthermore, this software did not install all the correct drivers, which was a headache too. Note: if your PC had a OS when you bought it, most likely there is a license key somewhere on your computer, so you don't have to buy a new license.
Windows 7, Not quite as bad as Windows 8
August 19, 2014
Windows 7 met my expectations. It is a program written by Microsoft and crammed down our throats because it isn't quite as bad as Windows 8. I bought Windows 8 and took that back off my computer because I didn't like it. Windows 7 seams like a dumbed down version of Windows XP with was excellent after Microsoft finally worked out all of the bugs. Bill Gates and crew obviously need more money to buy expensive vacation homes so they forced 30% of the people to anti up by discontinuing support for the best version of Windows yet. Is it any wonder that I hate Microsoft? In fact I wish I had bought Apple computers, but they were just to expensive when I purchased my machines. My website is still down because I can't get the server program reinstalled.

... little noise when spinning up.
July 17, 2017
Makes noise when spinning up. Try too load a program for my printer from disk and had to insert disk two separate times to get the disk to read. On the first attempt the disk spun badly out of balance. I am not very happy with this drive. I am not sure but believe the drive may have taken some abuse in shipping. It was in a box that was twice the size it needed to be with NO packing inside to cushion the drive.
Good drive, bad warranty
April 11, 2017
Was working great for about 4 months. Then it got swollen and stuff was rolling around inside it. Warranty doesn't cover if it is swollen, or they say physical damage. Was 3 stars I mean it did what a DVD drive should do. Docked a star for the warranty
these work, but I received a loud unit
February 17, 2017
I dont remember these drives being really loud, I purchased one 2 years ago and put it in my system and it ran very quietly. recently i had bought another to put into a build but as I tested it the drive was very noisy. I could hear the motor vibrating my case, I'm unaware of an idea on how to fix this because these drives have never done this to me before.
VERY VERY LOUD
September 11, 2016
LOUD. VERY VERY LOUDMaybe I got a dysfunctional unit. It is it 50+ decibels. It reads/writes just fine. But I would never buy this unit again.
not good
February 11, 2015
It hooked up easy but that's all, the computer does not recognize it. And when I tried to download the drivers I got more crap that I did not understand. that looked like gimmicks to buy stuff. Very dissapionted !!
Poor performance. 8X is closer to the actual performance figure.
December 1, 2014
I have a older Samsung SH-B123L that is rated at 16x performance. Right now it is ripping away at 19MB/s.On the other hand, my newer Asus 24X can only do 8-9.5MB/sSomehow that doesn't seem to be twice as fast to me.The Asus also has a tougher time on some disks and has read errors. The Samsung reads those disks with no problem.

I can't recommend this when there are other hard drives out there ...
August 24, 2017
After almost two years, the hard drive is starting to fail. Sometimes, it doesn't show up visible in BIOS, sometimes the PC goes to BSOD and restarts without warning. I can't recommend this when there are other hard drives out there that are less prone to early failure and will last you 4-5 years at the same price point.
I used to love Seagate products
February 8, 2016
I used to love Seagate products, but seems lately they've lost some of their mojo. I will buy brands other than Seagate in the future. Why, you ask? Well I've purchased 4 Seagate 1 TB drives in the past year, and 3 of them have gone bad on me. Don't have the technical skills to tell you exactly what went bad, but I can tell you they went bad, and even though I do keep good backups, I still lost some valuable data. That never makes me a happy camper. I expect hard drives to go bad, that's why I keep backups, just not that many that quickly.
I have had problems with these Hard Drives.
February 6, 2016
The hard drives that I bought have a faulty chip that does overheat, and that lead to three of my four drives failing to run after two months. One of the drives chips even burned out. I have not used one drive and I can use the other two drives I used, but only on a cooling pad for a notebook computer. I have been in contact with Seagate about this matter. They did not admit to me any problem with the drives. I had one Seagate drive fail on me before. I got a a new controller board for it, and it has been working great for a long time now. I only hope that If I do the same for the one that burned out, and get a controller board that will not have that overheating problem in the chips that the drives I have used have all had.

November 29, 2015
Bought two of them 3 years ago at NewEggs, put them into ZFS mirror and ran 24x7 (home desktop PC) and they "lived happily ever after and died at the same day" (so lasted for almost 2 years).Next time I bought them here in Aug 2014 (DOM: 06/2014), put into same ZFS mirror 24x7 mode - first one is dead already (so lasted for slightly more than 1 year).I'm very disappointed with a quality and will never recommend Seagate production to anyone, it's a piece of a Chinese crap.Switching to SSD from now.
Bought two of these for use in a RAID 1 ...
November 24, 2014
Bought two of these for use in a RAID 1 (mirror) configuration. One had CC43 firmware the other CC49. After two days of normal operation the CC49 drive showed as failed. Since the system was RAID 1 it continued to function although "degraded." I replaced the "failed" drive with a WD 1TB, the system rebuilt automatically and it has been normal for more than a month. Curiously the "failed" CC49 drive seemed OK as a standalone. Seagate Tech Support said that they do not support drives set up in RAID. Problems with Seagate drives in RAID have been reported elsewhere. Amazon made a full refund when I returned the CC49 drive.
Drive not consistently recognized!
July 6, 2013
I got a 1 TB drive from Amazon.I'm not sure if I happened to receive a defective unit. When I first installed it, the drive worked well. Then, after about 550 power-on hours (according to the SMART reporting) this drive began to not be recognized consistently on boot ups. Even after booting up, the drive would suddenly stop being recognized and would simply disappear. If I booted up from this drive, the computer would often lock up.A full erase with seatools did not help. And in Seatools (I used the DOS bootable version) it passes the tests! It takes a little while with the computer on to make it drop out.I wondered if the drive was getting too hot, but the other four drives in my case have no issues. I'm hoping that the replacement drive will work better.

Buy it! Just not from DealMonkeyOnline
May 14, 2016
Love Windows 7 so much so I went back from Windows 10. I DON'T however, recommend buying from, 'DealMonkeyOnline' regardless of their rating. Got a copy with an invalid key. Hours later with them and Microsoft I got a working key. An unprofessional and condescending salesperson made the whole experience terrible. Love the product though.
Won't work, illegitimate copy
April 15, 2016
Let's get right down to business, Amazon. After installing and activating this version of Windows I have been unable to install the updates. I have been looking for a solution to this problem and contacted Microsoft who moved it to level 2 support. Imagine my surprise when the level 2 support tech told me that it is not working because it is an OEM version and not a clean version from Microsoft. Why are you selling versions of Windows 7 that won't even work. I have spent three days on this problem only to find out that I was sold an illegitimate copy by Amazon. Let's make this right.
PIRATED WINDOWS 7
August 20, 2015
Sadly after paying for the item and I received it. Turns out it was a pirated disc. It was a burned 's with a printed label on it.
Classic Microsoft: complicated, time-consuming, arcane, and ultimately non-functional.
September 5, 2014
I purchased this from Amazon.com LLC in March 2014. It worked on a Parallels VM (on a Mac) for 7 months and then Internet Explorer stopped working. I decided to install over again from the CD from within Windows. Once the install was complete, I got a message that the product code was invalid. It was working for several months, but now it isn't. I spent 45 minutes with Microsoft (mostly on hold) and all they told me was to enter the install code correctly. I have used a magnifying glass to read the install code, I have tried at least 5 different variations on the characters I most likely could be reading wrong, but to no avail. The process has taken over an hour (2.5 including the reinstall). Microsoft has no solution for me. I purchased this item from a reliable source (I would assume it was). I have very good eyesight, so I am confident I am entering the code correctly. How could it work for so long and suddenly become invalid? I need this to verify that websites I develop work in IE (already a big troublemaker). $100 wasted. I'd go back to just working in Ubuntu and Mac OS, but too many dear souls are still stuck in the Microsoft cloud of bureaucratic incompetence so I have to design my sites to accommodate their wretched software.

July 6, 2014
I received an open package, labeled for use with the Registered Refurbisher Program. I didn't notice until after I had activated it that it was 32-bit, not 64. MIs-labeled, mis-shipped, or mis-informed. Packing list said "Sold by Software Technology.)
Did not come with Product Key
June 26, 2014
It works as it should, yes. I mean, it's just a Windows 7 installation disc. However the seller I bought it from, "Fin-Tech", did not include an activation key. I have attempted to contact them to get a key for it, but have received absolutely no reply. So now I'm stuck with a copy of Windows that will be "not genuine" in exactly 9 days. If this is resolved, I would gladly change this to a 5 star, but sadly I'm forced to give a 1 star and a bad review until this can be fixed.

Nine months in and failure. Product description clearly states '2 Year Warranty' yet Seagate warranty check indicates warranty expired. No date that it expired, just that it is. No response from Seagate either. What gives? Purchased the product because of the warranty instead threw away money and now have to cover out of pocket for a new drive. Very disappointed in Amazon and Seagate to be stuck in the middle as a customer and clearly misled on this purchase.

annoying grinding noise from first day of usage
April 15, 2016
thinking about returning it, I imaged my 5 year old WD disc to it and it just started to have this annoying, non-stopping grinding noise whenever the computer is on... plus the other reviews also alarms me, no one wants to have their system disc fail with important data on it.By the way, I have found seagate discs, when they fail, they fail completely, while other discs you actually can get something out....
Great if you do not like your data.
August 10, 2015
I originally purchased 3 1TB drives for a Raid 5 setup. It ran fine for one year and a drive died. I needed my system so I ordered a new one with Prime shipping so I could be running. Needless to say the New drive failed within 2 months. I had already used the one I received back on warranty for a different purpose so once again I ordered one with Prime shipping to have it fail again. This time I am waiting for warranty and one of the originals died, less than 2 years old, leaving me with a raid 5 array without any data. Throughout the failures I originally tried different SATA and power ports thinking this could be an issue and on the last one I switched from onboard RAID to a RAID controller via PCIE to rule out anything onboard. I've dealt with dead hard drives before and it is usually no big deal, it happens. Having 4 in a 3 month period of the same model and from different lots, that's an issue. These will be the last Seagate drives I purchase.
No good
May 9, 2014
Honestly from inception i had issues withe this drive. firstly, when I got it, it had windows 8 installed on it and well because it wasn't configured for my machine i had to format the drive which btw took a very long time way longer than it should have to format a drive this size. After fighting up with the drive for a couple of hours trying to get it formatted and even recognized by my machine, I was finally able to install my OS. Could be no less than a month the drive went totally bad, slowing down considerably and freezing every program i would try to run on it. Installed a SMART monitoring tool on the machine that indicated that the HDD had been seriously degraded and needed to be changed ASAP to prevent data loss. I honestly dont know if i had just gotten a bad batch or what but my experience with this particular Drive was not a good one AT ALL. I ended up buying a cheaper drive and that worked flawlessly, and being in the Caribbean it would have been a lot of hassle to ship this item back so i just count my losses.
