Five Star Reviews: | 70% the best coffee ever and on the budget April 8, 2017 the best coffee ever and on the budget; Costco sells it slightly cheaper but only for their members; mild taste and great eye-opener in the morning As good as Peet's December 16, 2016 I have been in the habit of buying the often costly Major Dickson's from Peet. Fine stuff, the best I had come upon after several years of sipping around. This 2-pounder is much cheaper, at least as fresh, and to my mind of the same quality as my (former) solid premium choice. I phoned the company to ask a few questions and found them helpful, knowledgeable, and, I thought, happy to work for a good company that turns out a very good product. I have a Rancilio Silva espresso machine and can grind out a great cup. The finest mix of coffeebeans I have had in 45 years July 30, 2016 The finest mix of coffeebeans I have had in 45 years. The blend is so perfect and makes the best cup of morning coffee ever. I have been making mixtures and grinding my own beans since I was 23 years-old. Ironically, this blend is very near to the first blend I made which was also the signature blend of South Street Coffee Beanery in Philadelphia, PA. Just wonderful and I am now a true believer. I just ordered another 2 pound bag. ... ordered online and I must say that it is wonderful. It took a couple of pots of coffee ... December 18, 2015 This is the first coffee I've ever ordered online and I must say that it is wonderful. It took a couple of pots of coffee to get the brew zeroed-in, but I expected that would be the case not having tasted this blend before and also I had just switched over to a good old-fashioned stove-top percolator after my drip maker died. This coffee is what I was looking for: great flavor and body with low acidity and a wonderful aroma. The product is a great value for the cost and it was shipped quickly and arrived in great condition. I will definitely reorder this and I will probably try one of the other blends. I would recommended this coffee to anyone who enjoys a great cup of coffee. Sorry Juan Valdez, Don Pablo is Best February 20, 2015 Excellent Product. We used to purchase coffee beans from the local supermarket, however the taste of the beans, once ground, was okay, but not that rich, full flavor that Don Pablo provides. Another benefit was the convenience of ordering the product online and the size of the bags. Availability of the type of coffee beans we like at the supermarket was unpredictable. Online ordering ensures that the product is available as needed. ... ordered coffee online so fresh that it was this annoying in it's need to be slowed down during brew ... December 20, 2014 I have never ordered coffee online so fresh that it was this annoying in it's need to be slowed down during brew & stirred for the floating.Wonderful full-bodied, dark but sweet, black as is no overly dark espresso/cheap French-roast notes. Excellent & whether or not it was a fluke that I got a batch so fresh that it was floating or not it cannot be beaten at twice the price with a baseball bat.I'll order enough to let it sit sealed for at least a month so I don't have to stop mid brew & stir. Great stuff. As close as you can get to the much under-rated French Roast Eight O'Clock beans until they either got shafted or went nuts with their pricing. May be my favorite of all coffee's but sorry E O C but I am not paying literally double what I was a year ago when Cafe Don Pablo is selling fresher if only ever so slightly different in flavor beans. | 75% Compares well to $25 per pound boutique Honduran coffee September 5, 2017 Ok I'll admit it- I'm a coffee snob. I set my bar with some of Europe's finest in Belgium, France and Italy where coffee is syrupy, dark and rich but not bitter- assuming it's prepared well. America on the other hand generally prefers it's coffee bland, pale and more like warm coffee flavored water.I'm assuming that the negative reviews I've read here are by people who prefer the latter and would be happier with Folgers because this bean is beyond superb for brewing a full bodied cup of coffee. I use a stove top moka espresso maker and about 3-4 oz of med-fine fresh ground bean per cup with a little half 'n half whisked in with a frother. The result matches or exceeds any coffee I've ever had anywhere in the world. Don Pablo is typically Honduran in character- chocolaty, earthy and mellow yet rich. It comes very very close to my favorite Honduran microlot bean at my local roastery at 25.00 per pound so at 8.50 a pound Don Pablo is the best deal ever. Wicked Good!! May 31, 2017 Smooooooth and delicious! Cafe Don Pablo Subtle Earth Organic Gourmet coffee in the medium-dark roast brews up smoothly every day in our French press. Cafe Don Pablo has a subtle clean flavor that will give you joy whenever you brew a cup. We are not fans of harsh tasting, strong coffees filled with creams, sugars, and whatever, preferring instead to let the coffee shine and be the star. Low acidity (thank you!), certified organic, and GMO free, roasted to order, plus a terrific price with subscribe and save making it a breeze to buy. Go on and treat yourself today!! Best coffee for brewing May 10, 2017 I have been ordering this coffee for more than a year. I have been a heavy coffee drinker my whole life. Tried so many different brands, but this so far proved to be one of the best to my taste for brewed coffee. And you cannot beat the price, especially considering that it is organic. We are more of espresso drinkers, meaning we like our coffee strong, dark and with a hint of bitterness, and no acidity or it goes down the drain. This coffee delivers all of this without the burned smell and taste of Starbucks, or the acidity that you can find in so many brands on the market. Excellent price abf flavor, aromatic, too! March 21, 2017 This is an excellent organic coffee. The price is extremely reasonable, especially as an organic brand. The aroma is heavenly and the taste was delicious! Nothing like a great cup of coffee first thing in the morning. I love to brew my own coffee from grinding the beans fresh daily to typing it off by frothing my own crème. I have a French press and the over the stove espresso maker...it's am amazing experience and worth the effort...beats Starbucks any day! I enjoy Don Pablo beans over Starbucks...theirs is too pricy and even the flavor falls short. Rich and Bold Flavor June 16, 2016 As a coffee addict I found Don Pablo Organic coffee beans the best ever.I have purchased other coffee beans from Cafe Don Pablo and decided to try this one as I was looking for a richer full bodied coffee taste. This is well worth the additional cost and now we are on our second bag and the consistency is the same. The coffee is smooth and rich tasting and seems to be low in acidity as it never has upset my stomach. The only thing I can say about the coffee beans they tend to be oily as most darker bends can be and that might effect the coffee puck coming out of the grinder. We use a Gaigga Expresso coffee machine with automatic grinder and the machine seems to be adjusting to the oilier coffee bean. good grief this is STILL wonderful coffee!! March 16, 2015 good grief this is still wonderful coffee!!!! I don't know the technical terms for coffee's attributes but I bought this originally to try with my cold-brew system... omg, it is smooth and full-bodied and I am going to have trouble stopping with my normal three cups of coffee... Since the beans come in a 2 pound package and my cold-brew system holds one pound, I did invest in a digital scale, an excellent burr grinder, and an air-tight container for the remainder of beans until my next batch. I did correspond with the company and discovered they recommended to NEVER freeze or refrigerate their beans and I have not... the results of the second batch is as good as the first batch... and oh, by the way, there are MORE than 2 pounds of beans in the bag... shhhh..8-2-15... continuing to reorder this coffee... truly made me into a coffee snob with my cold-brew system!!!11-1-15... I wish this was on the auto reorder list... lol... but as soon as I open my last bag, I order it again.... | 0% There are no reviews yet | 0% There are no reviews yet | 0% There are no reviews yet |
Four Star Reviews: | 15% Very smooth September 9, 2017 Very smooth for a modestly priced coffee. Have ordered and enjoyed it several times. Try it you'll like it May 6, 2017 I would say it's more of a lighter medium roast. I drink coffee black and it is less bitter than a medium roast.I use an Aero press which is similar to a french press but with a filter. I've been drinking Don Pablo for several years now and have no intentions of changing. Oily and bitter (not completely flavorful) but great price for quantity March 26, 2017 I personally am not a huge fan of this coffee. I would say that it is bitter but somewhat lacking in flavor. Also, overall - the coffee is extremely oily (this, of course, being a preference of the consumer.) Regardless, the price is very low, and one gets a large quantity for a semi-decent coffee. I still enjoy the coffee and it makes a good cup in ... October 29, 2016 This is definitely dark roast. Roasted past the second crack on the beans and it has a smokey flavor. I still enjoy the coffee and it makes a good cup in the french press. If you like Starbucks (who also roasts into very dark territory), then this is a good choice. Good price. Definitely not for those who like to taste the flavor of the coffee bean, though. The subtle flavors get extinguished in the heat of this roast. Alright coffee October 17, 2016 I bought this as a gift and I think it has a nice, well balanced flavor, however I feel that it's nothing to write home about. I feel like it's just average coffee. The best compliment I could give it is that it's balanced, not too acidic, not too bland. But not special either. Pleasantly surprised and I hope to make this my everyday brew! December 6, 2014 I was previously a regular subscriber of Community Coffee (whole bean) through Amazon's Subscribe & Save program. I was happy with it until the price seemed to go up on every shipment I received. I know coffee prices have risen across the board, but it seems like the price eventually went up close to $7 more for a three 12 oz. bag order.I was excited to try Don Pablo with all of the good reviews and a really decent price for a 2 lb. bag. I'm very pleased and this will likely become my everyday coffee. Good flavor and aroma with my Breville YouBrew brewer set at strong. As I occasionally like to switch things up, I will likely alternate between Don Pablo and Costco's House Blend. | 13% makes a good cup of coffee August 29, 2017 Mfg. describes taste as: Rich and chocolaty with profound depth of flavor, velvety body, and low acidity but I would not describe the taste that way. Not sure about the chocolate notes but does have a flavor depth and it's smooth going down.More of a good medium roast.Nice way to start the day. I may try cold brewing a batch and see how that taste. . This is my first purchase so I will finish off this batch and then determine if I will buy it again Good Coffee for the price August 8, 2017 Good coffee for the price. I liked being able to grind only what I needed before brewing so I know what is actually in my grounds. I am prone to heart burn and had none with this coffee. Aroma was mild. Not very strong at all. I tried this both in my Keurig and my french press. I will admit to enjoying this more in the afternoons than as a morning coffee. Overall it has good flavor. I have ordered twice and will order again. I liked this but I expected more POP but it is ... March 15, 2017 I liked this but I expected more POP but it is SMOOTH with no bitter taste or burnt taste at all. It is really good coffee and excellent quality I used the amount of ground beans and was so far the best coffee I had except for the coffee at Essau Cafe in Carpenteria Calif. But I forget the name......love that is organic and the one at Essau Cafe is not. Organic coffee August 22, 2016 I've been making my coffee with Starbucks for years. Guatemalan, Ethopian, special holiday blends. I love it. But decided I wanted to go organic when I read how many chemicals are used on coffee crops. I don't really know how accurate that is, but this is organic and about half the price of Starbucks - plus I can have it auto-delivered, thereby avoiding the dreaded "Ugh! I forgot to go to Starbucks for beans yesterday!" mornings. This is a good coffee, but this medium-dark roast seems a bit too light. I guess my Starbucks is more of a dark roast and I'll try that next time. This coffee is very smooth, just needs a bit more flavor for my palate. Morning Delight July 12, 2015 I purchased this product a couple weeks ago based on the reviews of others. I find the majority of most american coffee to be burnt and flavorless and where I live in south Florida the selection of coffee available is disturbingly non-existent. It was only recently that I realized that the better branded and tastier coffees could be found online for a reasonable price. I purchased both a manual coffee mill and my first bag of whole bean coffee. I'm still experimenting with the amount of coffee needed vs. the amount of time needed in the French Press I brew the grounds in. The difference in fresh ground coffee vs. store bought is outstanding. The only reason I didn't give five stars is because I have nothing to compare against as this is my very first bag of whole bean. Otherwise, I've brewed both espresso and regular coffee from the Cafe Don Pablo Gourmet beans and am finding the coffee to be smooth and velvety with complex flavors that tickle the taste buds and delights the senses. Can't wait to try other whole bean flavors! Stays Fresh Long, USDA Organic, decent flavor whole beans March 30, 2015 While I'll admit I'm not an everyday coffee drinker, this bag did last me over 4 months! Just ran out of my last beans today. I did put the bag in the fridge to extend its life. I haven't noticed much flavor loss from the first time I brewed my first cup! So, all in all, a bag lasted me almost 4 months. The coffee itself is decent, I have purchased better tasting coffee from true roasters in the Texas area. What sold me on this is that it's Organic. While its just a certification, any reduction of pesticide in my body is always a plus! Very few choices in my local stores without being sky high in price. And the price on this cant be beat by any local store. | 0% There are no reviews yet | 0% There are no reviews yet | 0% There are no reviews yet |
Three Star Reviews: | 7% California Central Coast Bean Grinder August 20, 2017 The beans were not as fresh as we hoped them to be upon arrival. The mid palate and finish lack complexity in flavor profile and a strong finish that my husband and I are already use to in a strong roasted recently packed bag of beans. Although it was interesting and easier to have the beans delivered to the home we won't be ordering these particular beans again. but from the quote "Besides the finest quality Arabica beans and artisan roasting March 8, 2017 So this is an initial review and I will update this later, but from the quote "Besides the finest quality Arabica beans and artisan roasting, another secret to great tasting coffee is freshness. The shorter the time from the roaster to your cup, the better the coffee tastes. We accomplish maximum freshness by roasting to order, instead of on a production schedule like our competitors. " one would expect to get fairly fresh inventory....like a month to a couple months. Mine received today in 3/8/17 expires 10/17 meaning it was roasted 5+ months ago. Don't expect to get something within a month to a couple months...i'll update later after i've brewed this more than once.... but maybe you do get what you pay for and this isn't some fantastic deal. i'll let the coffee do the talking on the update (rather than the disappointing roast date) Decent coffee - not good or great, but decent December 22, 2016 My fiance, the coffee drinker, said that this coffee is hit or miss. Some batches turn out really good and others not so good. Fiance says he uses the same amount of coffee beans each time, grinds the coffee the same way, and uses the same amount of water in the coffee maker, yet experiences varied results. He has decided he will go back to his old brand of coffee after trying this one time. We had high hopes for this coffee as it was well-reviewed and seemed to be a good deal, but unfortunately it was just alright. i really couldn't tell it was much better than 8-O'clock coffee I get at Walmart November 26, 2016 I really couldn't find the taste as good to me as 8-O'clock coffee I get at Walmart. This is a personal preference and coffee affectionados should give it a try. Please let me know if you found this review helpful. | 5% Very weak tasting coffee January 30, 2017 This coffee is weak. I used the same amount that I would normally use with other coffees and got what looked like a tea. I also tried different levels of fineness with the grind but to no avail. I don't know where people got these "fruity notes" from because all I noticed was an over roasted taste. I won't be buying this product again. I like that these beans are organic and low acidity October 7, 2016 I like that these beans are organic and low acidity; but with this I have to make sure to use a very small amount. I would like this so much better if I could find it in a medium brew over the medium to dark brew that I have been getting. But if you like strong coffee, purchase this!!! ORGANIC!!! No GMO or pesticides with these beans!!! Coffee beans are the number one highly pesticide sprayed product!! Surprised? Yeah, I was too!!! Really, what bugs want to eat coffee beans? I wanted to love it... April 21, 2016 It's OK, not sure if I'll buy again or try something else. I love that it's organic and affordable, but I'm not loving the taste. Just a personal preference I guess, but if anyone is familiar with the Sam's Club organic coffee that was discontinued recently, this is no comparison. It was superb and many are still searching for that coffee, hoping it was a private label that we will discover somewhere else. In the meantime, I'm mixing this with a non organic coffee that I like better. The search continues for me. Decent price, decent quality November 14, 2015 This coffee is ok if you're just looking for some bulk organic coffee. The roast and taste is fairly unremarkable. I'd categorize this as more of a medium roast. Decent coffee but honestly, there is so much excellent organic coffee on the market now, why bother with this stuff unless you're getting it for the bulk price factor? Next I used a single cup stovetop espresso maker with much better (stronger) flavor results July 26, 2015 My review is for the Don Pablo Organic Whole bean Coffee (Honduran Macala). Price is affordable. Flavor is rather weak and bland. I first brewed it in a 6 cup percolator with weak flavor results. Next I used a single cup stovetop espresso maker with much better (stronger) flavor results. I used a clean Burr Grinder. I have to admit this coffee is NOT bitter which is one its highlights besides the price. I have yet to try it in my French Press. I would give it 3 1/2 stars if I could. It's not bad but it's not exceptional IMO. I usually like black coffee January 9, 2015 I usually like coffee without cream or sugar added, but this coffee has an acrid bitter taste. I actually dumped my first cup of this coffee out and rinsed the coffee cup, thinking the dishwasher might have left some soap or rinse agent in the cup. The second cup I made tasted the same, so it must have been the coffee. I added some cream and sugar and the taste was very good, but it lacked flavors I usually expect from coffee.3 stars because:Without cream and sugar, even though that's how I normally like coffee, I'd throw it out. With cream and sugar, I'd give it 4 stars as a drink, but 3 stars as coffee - it's not what I expect from coffee, but aside from my expectations it is a delicious drink. | 0% There are no reviews yet | 0% There are no reviews yet | 0% There are no reviews yet |
Two Star Reviews: | 4% Two Stars August 15, 2017 The tast was there, but not the flavor, the smell (aroma). The freshness...old coffee. I had high hopes July 25, 2017 I wanted very much to like this beans, and tried real hard to find a way to bring out the best in them. Various grinds, cold-brew, hot brew, all ended up falling just a little flat. Both bags I got weren't very fragrant, despite looking good, so I think perhaps in the shipping process something significant may be lost. Not up to the Hype February 18, 2017 I've been drinking brewing and grinding whole bean coffee for the past 40 years. I drink coffee every day, 6 to 8 cups a day. I've drunk and tried more brands and types than I remember. I've had some excellent and some atrocious. This one was a disappointment. Not the worst, but not the best. It's drinkable is all I can gibe it. The beans have a slightly rancid taste and smell in my opinion. My high hopes from all the other reviews were dashed upon drinking this coffee. Good coffee...but... January 10, 2016 We have been purchasing this coffee for the past number of months as my husband likes it and it's well-priced. 5 stars for that. The 2 stars comes from a large STONE that we found in the coffee. Actually, the coffee grinder found it...which means we are now out a very nice coffee grinder. If you're accustomed to Folger's or the like, this might be passable September 13, 2015 So I read mixed reviews about this coffee and decided to order it and see for myself. If I could give it one and a half stars I would. The bag I received was roasted a little too long. So I used a cold brewing method to try and tone down the bitterness. The bottom line, if you're looking for a quality coffee, this is not it. If you're accustomed to Folger's or the like, this might be passable. If this were ground coffee it might be what I expected. Bottom line, spend the extra money on good coffee if that's what you're looking for, and pass on this. | 4% Better luck next season! June 10, 2017 First let me say that Honduran coffee can be very hit or miss depending on the year - some years it is delicious and velvety smooth, and other years it's tasteless and bitter. Unfortunately this coffee falls into the later category. I've had this coffee for almost a week and have been experimenting with different grinds and quantities. I really wanted to love this coffee, but alas it is either tasteless or tasteless and bitter depending on grind. I've had a different brand of Honduran coffee from the same region and it too was tasteless, but not bitter. I guess from reading other reviews this is just an off year, which is a pity because Honduran coffee is one of the best when it's right on. The good: Price Grinds well Few if any bad beans ... April 22, 2017 Before my formal review, attached are pics of the product brewed for espresso. The pic with the three different roasts has the product, Subtle Earth Coffee med-dark roast, on the left. Center bottom is a light roast and on the right is what I would call a med-dark roast. I also have a pic with the coffee ground for espresso. I use a Classic Gaggia with filtered water. The good:PriceGrinds wellFew if any bad beansNext "your preference":Very smoky in oder & tasteStrong tobacco flavorChard oak flavorBitter stale dark chocolateThe bad:There is no nuance or subtletyThis is really a DARK roastThe tobacco smoky taste is over the topThe bean should not be roasted this dark.I would not recommend this to coffee oficionados.I would recommend it to smokers that drink coffee or to those that love smoky tobacco flavors. Disappointed February 23, 2016 I was hoping this coffee would be the replacement for the organic coffee I had enjoyed for 12 years that was no longer available. I'm so disappointed that it was not. I'm giving the coffee order two stars. One star for the quick delivery and another star for the packaging. The coffee package was attractive and had much information on it concerning the coffee. My disappointment is in the roast. As soon as my husband unpacked the coffee, he said, "This coffee smells like the burnt coffee." It did. We ground enough for a pot of coffee, and it tasted horribly burnt. We made another pot, using less coffee, and it still smelled and tasted burnt. I guess there's a niche for this kind of coffee, since two well known brands use this type of roasting, but we don't drink it. We are now trying to give away the rest of the two-pound bag. We are currently drinking a non-organic coffee that has been roasted for a smooth taste. What happened to the quality and freshness? July 20, 2015 What happened to that great coffee aroma and flavor? Last time I bought this it was $13.99, now it's $16.99 and when the bag was opened there was no fresh coffee aroma that I had always experienced with this brand previously. Took a break from the Eko Brew K cups using the regular pre-filled K cups for a spell then started feeling guilty for contributing to the landfill problem again. Hoping that when the beans were ground, the aroma and flavor would surface - not the case. The date on bottom of the bag was "Best used by May 2018" so there shouldn't have been a problem. What a disappointment. | 0% There are no reviews yet | 0% There are no reviews yet | 0% There are no reviews yet |
One Star Reviews: | 4% Not good. April 22, 2017 Looking at all the amazing reviews and the price I assumed this would be a slam dunk. I've tried multiple other whole bean brands from Amazon. All were good to great. This product is not good. I used the same burr grinder and tried multiple methods: drip machine, pour over, aeropress and French press. I finished the whole 2 pound bag and did not enjoy the flavor and did not find it fresh. Do not get this coffee. The more I drink the more I want to vomit. - BEWARE NO RETURNS March 27, 2017 Way over roasted. Tastes burnt. The bag smells like burnt skunk. The more I drink the more I want to vomit. The bag has no "roasted on date" but it is foil lined with a CO2 valve so that's not it. Product - 2LB Cafe Don Pablo Signature Blend Coffee - Whole Bean Coffee - Medium Dark Roast - BEWARE NO RETURNS No no no February 23, 2017 Not for me......Tasted burnedFortunately I still had some of my previous grind to mix with.Too Yankee frugal to waste but will not order again. Inconsistent February 3, 2017 Will not buy again. Taste of the coffee changed from order to order. First bag was good but subsequent bags were bitter. Undrinkable. I had to return thus product. January 13, 2016 I understand that everyone has a taste preference. Some people like it darker with more chocolate undertones and sweetness. But there is a point in the roasting process that can not be crossed. If the roasting process goes beyond this point, the beans loose all their charm and even the hints of coffee flavor one expects are gone. The flavor becomes flat and bitter, as charcoal. Unfortunately this coffee was over roasted to the point that it looked, smelled and tasted as charcoal. It might have been just this batch. I hope the roaster/seller will take a better care in examining the product before the point of sale. | 3% DON'T LET THE LABEL/RATINGS FOOL YOU April 29, 2017 Soooooo disappointed in this coffee. In whose mind this is good I can't possibly guess but I was lured in by the ratings, the fair trade, the organic, etc....fool I was. The good news is, it forced me to do some research online as to how coffees are rated, grown, roasted and so forth. I'm MUCH smarter consumer now and will never make this mistake again! Terrible cup of coffee April 13, 2017 Terrible cup of coffee, tasted like burnt ash. So many good reviews, doesn't make sense. ZERO flavor. Not worth buying if you enjoy coffee that tastes like coffee March 31, 2017 This "coffee" is terrible. It has absolutely ZERO flavor. I'm very disappointed because I had high hopes.....now I'm stuck with 2lbs of this stuff. I'll never buy this again. Really BAD batch? February 25, 2017 I bought based on the good reviews and I'm pretty shocked that it's so bad. After the first pot I thought I'd shake up the bag and try again but it's still aweful.I'm really surprised too but it tastes like DIRT.....kinda like old maxwell house coffee.that sits way way in the back of the pantry for emergencies. Light roast tastes horrible February 20, 2017 I love coffee and have been drinking it for years like most coffee lovers. I tried the light roast and it was just horrible. The taste is bitter and it's not smooth at all. | 0% There are no reviews yet | 0% There are no reviews yet | 0% There are no reviews yet |
