This is the perfect set for anyone who is a novis like myself
Excellent choice

Price was good and I occasionally need a selection, so it seemed like a good bet. It turned out to be even more than that. These really do the job. They hold up very well. I am impressed - and that isn't easy to do!

great price for a starter set. Broke a couple of bits, but drilled a lot of holes. The chisels and reamer also came in handy. I would buy individual replacement bits but can't find the same ones sold individually.

This is my second since the thief of my first knew how good it is. Great price, rugged and with a Bosch SDS drill set up the results are awesome. If I was going to drill big cores I'd think bigger machine but since most of what I do is less than an inch, I don't think you can do much better. Love it.

February 6, 2017
This review is for a refurbished model.I used this to chip away small 1x1 floor tiles in a basement bathroom I am remodeling. Overall this tool did the job well enough. It ended up being a lot more work then I thought it would be to chip away the tile and then chip away the thin set. The key on the thinset is to make short passes, about a half a blade in thickness and the thin set would come up. I guess I could have found a more powerful hammer drill, but that might have damaged the concrete. This Bosch was powerfull enough (with a lot of elbow grease) to remove the tile, but not damage the floor.Pros- Looks brand new, if it did not have a refurbished sticker you would not be able to tellCons- did not come with any bits (I am not sure if the full price model does or not). The tile bit was 15 bucks so factor that into your total price.
If you need to drill concrete, this will do it!
February 27, 2016
Nice tool! I'm a homeowner, not a tradesman, so my use is fairly light, but this has done what I wanted it to do. First use was to drill into concrete to fasten a threshold for a door. I'd previously tried this with a "hammer drill" made by Ryobe...which worked a little bit. I got a couple of holes drilled eventually (after minutes of noise and effort), but there was one hole that ran into a rock in the concrete and the Ryobe couldn't get past it and I eventually gave up. When I got the Bosch I took another shot at it...about 10 seconds was all it needed to blow through that rock and finish the hole. The last hole was about twenty second to sink in a couple of inches and finish the job. I have the SDS-plus bits, but I also got the drill chuck and did the holes for the threshold with TapCon bits, since those were the screws I was using. Same bits the Ryobe was using so unsuccessfully. A hammer drill is just not the same as a rotary hammer! Next job is drilling some brick...which the Ryobe also failed on...
One of my favorites.
August 12, 2015
This tool does many things and it does them all really well. Though not the largest rotary hammer in its class, it out-performs many higher-priced and more powerful tools. Its well-designed and has handled everything I've ever thrown at it- and at this point, I've thrown a lot at it.It works very well as a demo hammer- I've broken down a cinder block retaining wall with it, a brick and mortar chimney and it pops up tiles like they're nothing, making quick work out of an otherwise strenuous, crappy job. This alone would make purchasing the tool worth every penny. It's like a jack-hammer that weighs eight pounds. However, as a hammer-drill, this thing cuts through cement and masonry like it's butter. Butter, I say. I've anchored posts 14" deep into solid concrete with this tool, over and over and over. It performs awesomely. Very powerful for its size. The one thing that I tried to get this tool to do that I would not recommend is using it with the SDS 1/2" socket-driver. That was a bad idea. I nearly broke my arm trying to tighten lag-bolts with this guy. It was way too much torque for the job I was asking it to do. Skip that, even though the adapter is available.Overall, five stars. Pick one up! You'll like it more every time you use it.
Exceeded expectations
August 17, 2014
Metal depth stop as opposed to some vendor's plastic ones, rugged case, plenty of power cord, easy controls, aux handle that can be swiveled to any angle around the nose of the tool, or removed entirely. The depth stop moves around the nose with the handle and is clear of the housing anywhere around the circumference, and adjusts easily with a push of the red button on the aux handle. Rugged carrying case and my only wish in that regard was some built in storage for bits. Worked very well drilling some 5/8" holes in 20+ year old concrete, and the combo of this hammer and Bosch bit made easy work of what I thought might be the hardest part of installing some drop in anchors. Obviously I have no idea as yet of longevity but if anything like the other Bosch tools in my collection, should last decades for me in home owner / hobbyist use.
Awesome Drill!
February 23, 2013
I'm a contractor and I did a lot of research and found that this drill was recommended by a LARGE number of contractors. I love it! At first I was considering a regular hammer drill, but this SDS drill was just $20 more and it is like 100x better than a regular hammer drill. If you don't understand SDS technology you should research it because it is far superior. A hole that takes 30 sec with a hammer drill takes like 5 sec with an SDS drill.Anyway, one thing I didn't like at first about SDS was that you have to have special bits, but I've changed my mind about that. The bits are really not that expensive and it you want to use regular bits or mixing paddles or any other drill accessory just buy "Bosch 1618571014 SDS-plus Shank 3 Jaw Chuck"http://www.amazon.com/Bosch-1618571014-SDS-plus-Shank-Integral/dp/B0009H5RFM/ref=sr_1_cc_1?s=aps&ie=UTF8&qid=1361649557&sr=1-1-catcorr&keywords=Bosch+1618571014+SDS-plus+Shank+3+Jaw+Chuck

Good weight to power ratio -- unsure about longevity
September 5, 2017
Nice balance of weight vs. capabilities. I used this instead of renting a larger machine for thinset removal. I cleared about 200 sq. ft. of 12" tile as well as 200 sq. ft. of thinset in a couple days with it. It does get pretty warm if you run it for more than about 10 - 15 minutes straight. No performance changes, or anything though -- just something to keep in mind. I'd imagine that if you wanted to use this machine for heavy use (6+ hours a day) for lots of jobs (10+), it would eventually die. However, for your average DIYer looking to remove some tile and thinset, this machine should do the trick. (Get Amazon's extended warranty, if you're unsure about it). Considering this is a fairly light-weight machine (maybe 10 lbs.?), it was pretty easy to use continuously without getting too much arm fatigue. However, the shorter length of the machine means that you're going to spend much more time on your knees and hunched over. Keep this in mind if you have bad knees or a bad back.
For my situation, it did not remove stone tiles as quickly as I had hoped. Bu, it drills and scapes just fine.
August 11, 2017
I am a fairly savvy do-it-yourselfer. I have done enough jobs around the house to where I think I know what I'm doing (in most cases). I needed to remove about 120 square feet of stone tile from a concrete slab. I bought this hammer drill with the hopes that it would make my tile removal project a lot easier. I also bought two different "chisel bits, a Bosch brand and a no-name brand. After using this hammer drill and chisel bit for about 30 minutes, I realized that the tiles were not coming up as easily and quickly as I had hoped they would. I could hear and feel the hammer drill "hammering". But, the tiles were not coming up easily. I then tried using a handheld cold chisel and a short handled sledge hammer. The handheld cold chisel and short handled sledge hammer removed the tiles MUCH faster than the hammer drill. No kidding. So now I am now removing the tiles with the hand chisel and sledge. But, all is not lost!! I used the Bosch hammer drill to remove the old thinset (mortar), and it worked fast and easy. So, here is my conclusion: For my situation, this Bosch hammer drill does not remove stone tiles all that well from a concrete slab. It is slower than I though it would be. But when it comes to removing thinset/mortar from concrete, it works extremely well as long as you are using the proper chisel bit. Of course, your results might be different from mine. PLEASE READ THIS: As I was working, I could feel sharp shards of tile hitting me on the arm, neck, and face. ALWAYS WEAR PROTECTIVE GOGGLES THAT COVER YOUR EYES COMPLETELY. DO NOT USE THE ONES THAT LOOK LIKE EYEGLASSES. THEY ARE NOT GOOD ENOUGH.
Starting Difficult
February 18, 2016
This is a good hammer drill, and once it gets going in the hole it seems to speed up. For starting holes in concrete it was not as easy as my previous hammer drill, as on low speed this does not start the hole very well. It is as if I should be using an old star drill to get it to start in the right location (like a center punch for a drill on steel).
Not a fantastic buy, but a good one
March 30, 2015
Available at the Depot for the same price I paid. Not a fantastic buy, but a good one. This is better than the usual drill type hammer drill, but still isn't the gnarly tool you might want if you blast thru concrete every day. It will make any homeowner and even the casual tradesman quite happy for a long time. Seems rugged enough and the hammer action is tuned to get you right thru even aged concrete. Very happy with how it operates and like the SDS drill bit adapter. Keep in mind you can only use SDS bits with this tool and if you have a big collection of non-SDS bits like I do you might not be real happy. I knew it before I bought it and have started an SDS bit collection.
excellent

used with hc2081 s4 1/2x4 bosch carbibe bit for drilling holes in house slab. quick work! mild vibration and noise. about 1/2 the amps of others, but pleanty of power. don't like the depth stop. must really be sure it's locked. probably should be one on each side since the drill is easy to cant when vision is restricted..
Bosch Rotary Hammer
March 20, 2013
This thing is very durable and so far has given me a solid four days of demo work on a floor with no signs of slowing down. My ony suggestion would be a "click" type adjustment for the side handle. After about a 1/2 hour of work it tends to come loose and has to be retightened. Otherwise, this tool is very versitle!

They should tell you it is not in SAE sizes
False description
October 7, 2016
The product is falsely represented in the description. First, they are a "Stark" named brand from China. Second, they are Not SAE sized as described and are in Metric size. The point is why do they not just tell the truth about what the product is ??Lastly, the grade or quality of the drills are Not that of a Bosch drill bit at the Carbide tip. So far, one drill tip has chipped on my first 1/2" or 12mm hole on a concrete floor.

June 23, 2015
Bits are well designed and does the rough non-precision work which I required it for, however they are not well coated and after usage immediately started rusting. Warning pls grease or oil bits after use prior to storage.
Make sure you measure! Imprecise sizes and slightly smaller than advertised.
February 21, 2015
High quality but I knock of one start because of poor labelling and/or description. I knock of a another start because these don't seem terribly precise to any size conventions. But I can live with those defects. If the supplier puts in a better description to explain I would bump up to 4 starts because the bits work great. These are oddly sized without any meaningful labels. To figure out size I waisted a lot of time measuring with my caliper and doing fraction math! Actual sizes are very different than what is advertised. Or may there were just made very imprecisely. They do not match conventional metric bits either. In contrast, my Dewalt drill bits are exactly as advertised. Precision might not matter as much for masonry holes, but still you don't want to make your drill holes too big.In comparison to what was stated this what I actually got: one 3/16" x 60 mm, one 3/16" x 110 mm, four 7/32" x 110 mm (was that supposed to 3/8"?), one 37/128" x 60 mm (supposed to be 1/4"?), one 11/32 x 110 mm (supposed to be 5/16"?), one 11/32 x 206 mm (supposed to be 5/16"?), one 25/64" x 206 mm (supposed to be 3/8"?), one 59/128" x 160 mm (supposed to be 1/2"?) and one 65/128" x 210 mm (supposed to be 9/16"?). I'm using the convention the length is how deep drill bit can drill, which matches the smaller ones. There was supposed to be a 9/16" x 260 mm. That only works if you measure from end to end. So they are changing conventions. The case could not fit a 260 mm bit if following just the drill depth. On positive side Quality seems high and for the $32.95 I paid, including all those bits that's a great deal. But I notice the prices is much higher, more than double, after just a week. I tried the 1/4 inch on brick with a Makita HR2475 (which I got for a steal at Ebay), and it was like going through butter!

BITS GET STUCK: BIG PRICE JUMP UP TO THE SDS MAX;
December 21, 2013
3 Stars instead of 5 because of the stuck-bit /clutch-slip problem and the fact that after about 2 1/2 years of only little use, the front part just stopped holding bits & fell out (tool receiver). I could not put it back in -- looks like it requires a press to reinstall. This Bulldog bites & won't let go! -- Rather, it gets bit and can't get loose! Right now I have stopped my concrete driveway drilling to hunt for a vicegrip because the bit is stuck and no shaking would make the bit come loose and this drill resume drilling. They should include a vicegrip with the drill! The Bulldog tends to jam the bit in concrete holes and then the slip-clutch refuses to turn the bit. So for me it had recurring STUCK BIT problem. Once the bit sticks, you can't force it out with drill power, either forward or reverse. I usually got the bit loose by wiggling the drill around until today. I've got to try a vice grip on the bit now. As a comparison, when I drilled with the Ryobi hammer drill (chuck key system) I don't recall ever having a bit so difficult to unstick, but the Ryobi could give you quite a kick with the drill spinning rather than the bit if you got a stuck bit. However, the quick insertion & quick release system on the SDS Plus may be a big time saver when you are progressively reaming the hole larger & larger with bigger bits. Yet if you follow the instructions to the letter, you would be lubricating the insertion end of your bit every time you put another bit into the jaw. That would be time consuming. As my Bulldog came packed with grease in the jaw, I did not do any additional lubrication during the couple of hours that I used the Bulldog one day.I just bought this (December, 2013) and used it to drill some holes in concrete. And at first I was satisfied with the performance using Bosch bits. It went pretty quick for 6 inches deep by starting with small bits and tapering up in size gradually, keeping the holes wet with water. Since the jaw is quick release and quick insert (instead of use a chuck key), it went pretty quick (I did not lube each bit on insertion.)One thing that slowed down the drilling was that bits frequently stuck in the holes with the Bulldog going into slip-clutch, not turning the bit. Then it was somewhat difficult to get the bit free. I found I was having to rev-up the Bulldog and enter the hole at high velocity to discourage the hole grabbing the bit with slip-clutch activation. The slip-clutch is a safety feature for not breaking your wrist or having your arm twisted or having the drill go around instead of the bit & whacking your nose or whatever. But it seems to me that it goes into slip-clutch too easily -- I am no Hercules or Popeye, but I could withstand more torque without the slip-clutch going into operation so easily. I did not find any way to adjust the slip-clutch in the instructions. I also did not see any speed / mechanical advantage adjustment. (If you could set the drill to have a slower speed but more torque due to geared mechanical advantage, could that not make the bit less likely to get stuck and your arm not getting as much backlash?)This hammer drill has 3 settings: 1) drill only, 2) hammer-only, 3) hammer-drill. From what I have read, the hammer-only is meant only for small, light chiseling, not heavy-duty bludgeoning. I found the hammer-only useful for chiseling a bit of week-old concrete. But for heavy-duty hammering, one is directed to the SDS Max, which has a different bit system (not compatible). SDS & SDS Plus are interchangeable as to bits. But SDS-Max is not compatible. Max uses a different insertion system.IMHO:After doing some searching: There does appear to be more accessories available for the SDS Max, which is also more powerful. I had preferred the Max, but the price jump is huge (unless you go to Harbor Freight & its brands, which I did not think of trying). So the Max was maxed out of my price range. The bits are expensive as sold by Bosch (or other name brands). However, I note now (after buying a large set of name brand bits) that Harbor Freight has SDS bits cheap. One doesn't expect high quality so incredibly cheap; but I think since they are so cheap, they are worth trying. I mean if you buy a set of SDS bits for $5, you won't cry if they are no good. Now I note that for about $190 Harbor Freight sells an SDS Max. I have no idea about the quality. But I think if I had it to do over, I would have tried the Harbor Freight SDS Max, though I do like my Bosch SDS Plus aside from the stuck bit routine.Incidentally, it appears that the SDS Max bits are more abundant and common than bits for the SDS Plus. There is commonly sold a converter attachment that let's one use SDS Plus bits in an SDS Max. But the only place I have seen a converter that lets one use Max bits in SDS-Plus is on Ebay. I presume that it is thought that a rugged Max bit for a Max use would not be appropriate in an SDS Plus, as not powerful enough a hammer. Perhaps if you try heavy chiseling or hammering with the SDS-Plus Bulldog, you will break the Bulldog?I think if you want to do much large hole drilling in concrete using a hole saw, you are likely to find better bits made for the SDS Max than for the SDS Plus. Then you might save time with the Max by using 1 hole saw in the Max, instead of 7 sizes of SDS Plus bits, reaming it wider & wider! I did try a couple of diamond hole-saw drill bits made for a chuck-key-jaw in a Ryobi hammer drill, but I found that slow go. As of now I have bought the over $40 chuck-key-jaw attachment for the SDS-Plus and found that it has a little learning curve. It came with an admonition to read the manual carefully first, but I found no manual with the attachment.BTW, I am a home-owner, not a professional concrete driller.NOW WATCH OUT FOR GLOWING REVIEWS OF PRODUCTS. As long as you were not in re-inforced concrete, it did a great job. Wouldn't put a dent in the really hard stuff though, even with the correct bits.
Works well but ...
March 6, 2013
The hammer works well and has not given any problems. Part of my project is to remove the perimeter of my 3-4" thick basement floor for a drain tile. The bits for it are not very large and it is undersized for such a project. It works fine for cleaning up but I have to hit the area hard with a sledge before it can do much. I expect it will work well to drill concrete but if you have much to break up you need a bigger tool.
Great tool with some drawbacks
September 15, 2012
This drill is very powerful and works great. However, the unit I had started to leak oil and also a little squeaking noise started to come from the brushes/commutator when I would stop the unit both these things worry me. I have had it for about a month and I have run the drill very hard and hot, chain drilling 24 inch deep half inch diameter holes into granite.I am not sure if the oil leak is normal, as it is not excessive and seems to run down the drill bit as the unit begins to get really hot. Beyond the 2 issues mentioned above the tool is fine, the power is good, the vibration dose not cause alot of fatigue and the power cord is adequate. However I am going to get the next unit up (Bulldog Extreme Max) in the line as it seems to have better heat dissipation and anti vibration properties in the rotary hammer drive.

These drill bits are metric, not SAE, as described. The smallest is 5.5mm and the largest is 16mm, as stamped on the bits. The price has mysteriously doubled since I placed my order. HORRIBLE PRODUCT WARRANTY
March 24, 2014
We purchased this to do some home remodeling and it worked great for the project we were doing until the third day (spread over a couple of weeks) of the project when it was used sporadically for 1/2 hour left alone for another 1/2 or so for lunch break and then when it was turned back on it made a loud bang and stopped working. We immediately called the company regarding the 1 year warranty that is supposedly included for this product and they said that there is nothing that can be done that the tool overheated and that is not covered in the warranty...in my opinion that is ridiculous! This is not an inexpensive tool, it was not being used to a point that it should have overheated and I think it's reasonable to expect a tool to work for more than a couple of uses! We will not be buying tools from Amazon anymore but will be buying them from places that offer purchase protection as obviously the product warranty can not be counted on!
