Drop Proof Storage
June 29, 2017
Was a required purchase for my daughter majoring in Journalism. She says it works with no issues and it is quite sturdy.
Very Fast!
March 15, 2017
Incredibly fast! Use this to store footage and video software save files. The extra storage and fast data transfers have greatly sped up my workflow. Would even recommend this drive over an external SSD, as the speeds are very close to SSD speed, but its price is so much lower. Whether you use the thunderbolt connection of the USB 3.0 connection you will have highly satisfying speeds.
Ruggedized with attached cable
August 15, 2016
A new to me combination of a rugged external drive and an attached thunderbolt cable. The cable is permenantly attached to the drive and a slight recess circling the drive allows the cable to be wrapped around and concealed. The thunderbolt fitting also fits in a recess in the end of the drive and it is covered a cap to conceal all of the cable and fitting. The drive posters very well and does not appear to overheat when used to full capacity copying files.
Works great in my IMAC
June 10, 2015
Works great in my IMAC , that experiment issues with the Internal Disk, I am booting from the LACIE now and it saved me taking the MAC to the shop.
Excellent Drive!
December 20, 2014
I need a backup drive for Time Machine on my MAC. I have been watching this drive for quite a while and waiting for the price to come down. One day my Passport Drive fell off my lap and that was the end of it. I bought a $53 Toshiba 500GB to replace it which just served as an interim drive because I immediately ordered the LaCie. I'm not going to try to drop it off my lap but I am confident that if it does get dropped it will still function unlike moving head drives. It's solid, it's fast, it's portable. My only minor worry is the permanently attached thunderbolt cable which if it goes bad I would have to disassemble the drive to replace it. Probably not going to happen anyway so kudos and 5 stars for this SSD.

Yeah, this is a bit pricey but holy speed batman! The guts of this thing is a Samsung SSD...known for performance, stability and long life. Definitely worth it.

Great Value, Reliable Portable Storage
March 15, 2017
Working great!Used in conjunction with my MacBook Pro, this is my working storage drive for my photography files.I travel frequently for work and wanted something that can handle the bumps and sometimes dirty conditions that I would subject it too.I recently spent my 2 vacation camping and touring around the blowing sands, salt and dirt of Death Valley and Arizona. I was happy to have this drive in my bag.I left one open star because the orange case is a terrible color. I also wish I could just remove the case for at home use. That way I could use it with a docking station.
Nice little drive.
February 20, 2017
It's a good and fast HDD with a neat Thunderbolt connection. The cable is very smartly integrated into the case to fold up and away. It's probably my last hard drive purchase (going all SSD), but it's a neat little drive, plenty of space to make up for my Mac's tiny SSD. I do wish it had come with a USB 3 cable as well, but that's easily remedied.
Great Drive, Should Be a Little Cheaper
February 19, 2016
I've owned a LaCie Rugged before. I bought this because my new Mac doesn't have Firewire and — rather than getting a Firewire to Thunderbolt adapter for my old drive — I wanted to take advantage of the full Thunderbolt speed. The drive is nice. Standard LaCie Rugged, if you're familiar with them. It provides a level of comfort knowing that you don't have to be overly delicate with the unit when it's not in use.My favorite feature with this is that the Thunderbolt cable is built in and fits integrally into the rubber bumper. I won't miss having to keep track of a separate cable or rubber-band it to the drive.Regarding speed, I'm sure it's there but my application for the drive isn't taking full advantage of it. I'm using it as a dedicated Time Machine drive, so there's a bunch of processing slowing the information transfer down. The one issue I have is price, and it's enough of an issue to knock off a star. I'm all for things being priced appropriately, even if the price is high. At long as the value of the item matches the price, I wouldn't take off a star. In this case I think they're taking advantage of the LaCie name plus the use of the Thunderbolt cable, and are hiking the price. You can get 1TB external drives for $80, to the $180 I paid for this. Sure, it's a LaCie Rugged, so that would make $100-120 a fair range. Add the Thunderbolt and I can see $140-150. $180 is really pushing it but — as I'm sure they're counting on — I wanted this configuration and this was the only one to get, so I paid it.
Fast Fast Fast!!!
November 30, 2015
This drive is FAST! I was a little concerned about having a permanently attached cable (Thunderbolt) in case something happens to it, but I keep it wrapped around the unit when not in use so it should be fine. My laptop has Thunderbolt 2, but those drives (very few out there) are very expensive! Also, I'm not currently editing 4k video, so Thunderbolt 1 is more than fast enough for 1080p. I like the rubber case on the drive. I think that a regular, spinning HD would require that more than an SSD (no moving parts), but it's still nice to have the padding. Can't really say much else. I've used LaCie products for years and they've been solid performers and great on quality. I would definitely get another one of these.
Fast, Durable, Long Lasting Data Storage
March 25, 2015
Pros:DurableEasy to FindFastFiar PriceBuilt in Thunderbolt Cable (Can cost upwards of $25 otherwise)Cons:No second Thunderbolt port for daisy chainingI've used Lacie drives for years and never had a single failure. That continues with the two copies of this drive I've been using happily for several months now. The speed is great for on the go use since I fill my laptop regularly and need some extra space. I'm not afraid to travel with them either since they're pretty rugged and take a beating. All in all the perfect drive for use when flying, commuting, hiking, etc.
Great, but product may drop connection.
November 19, 2014
I love the Lacie Rugged drives. But this one disconnects every now and then on its own. Not too bad and it has not dropped during data transfer yet. I'm glad i purchased it.

Looks Sturdy, Slow
October 1, 2017
Looks sturdy, attractive case, portable, clever way to store cords; all in all it's an attractive product. But it does appear to be quite slow in CCC backup of 1 TB iMac hd. Took days.

Great drive drawback is it does not power by bus on the thunderbolt connection
HIGHLY RECOMMEND GETTING THE RECOVERY OPTION WHEN PURCHASING THIS **JUST IN CASE YOU EVER NEED IT**
September 18, 2017
HIGHLY RECOMMEND GETTING THE RECOVERY SERVICE OPRION -- I initially loved this product, it was recommended across several mediums and reviews I watched. It seemed super reliable and really sturdy and just plain incredible. Yet, I think resserch should be done on teh consumer end for as to what can be ran off the device itself. I believe I must have burned it out on my end by possibly overwhelming it some how. Ive had it close to 2 months, and I know amazon along with the company offers the option for recovery service along with the manufacturers warranty so that is great and as mentioned above i recommend it. Its either i get a replacement free of charge OR a replacement free of charge and pay $600+ for recovery -- which has me now kicking myself for not getting the reovery option via amazon for only 10 bucks more (along with wondering what I did wrong on my end to burn it out only after 2 months)
Built In Thunderbolt Cable Falls Apart After One Year
December 19, 2015
It's been one year with normal use of this drive, and the head of the Thunderbolt cable that's built in is falling apart. What a shame. Forced to use the USB3 connection. The best part about this drive is the built in cable - makes it's easy to grab and go. So when it dies, it's really annoying. The head slides right out of the thunderbolt bay with the slightest touch. Not good.
Not as fast as lead to believe!
September 7, 2014
I purchased this drive specifically to run virtual OS's from. Having a Thunderbolt connection is exactly what I wished for the USB 3 is a bonus. I noticed however that performance was lacking and not as I expected. Taking a look at the hard drive installed I was sadly disappointed to find a SATA II 5400rpm drive with nothing better then an 8mb cache. Why have a fantastic connection to the computer and then cripple this device with an old, inexpensive, poor performing hard drive? For this reason alone I rate this device with only 3 stars. What a disappointment. Now I also get to purchase a new hard drive and install it so this enclose can perform as advertised. I feel greatly misled by the promised quick performance advertising
New design, new problems.
August 8, 2014
The 10MB/s speed increase is nice but negligible.Connecting more than one to a MacBook Pro at a time often causes one to eject randomly while reading or writing. We also had one hooked up and it would eject randomly to.They seem unstable and we don't like the limited links on the thunderbolt cord. In concept it seems like a good idea but in practice it's not that great. The extra piece of rubber to cap the end is a bit of a nuisance toThe previous version was so much better and more reliable before this new design

HORRIBLE usb connection...Stay away
March 20, 2017
the usb connection is absolutey horrible...even just a small shift and it will lose the connection. So many times I get my mac warning saying that the drive was ejected incorrectly. Luckily, it hasnt resulted in any lost data...but i will NEVER buy one of these again. I suppose it is fast enough, but it the usb connection keeps dropping then what good is it anyways? They made a horrible choice for the imput on the hard drive itself. Very flimsy and fidgety. BEWARE.
It easily falls out of the unit
November 11, 2016
I agree with others about the USB cable connection. It easily falls out of the unit. This is disappointing considering it's $169 & supposed to be for rugged use, but it's simply sitting on my desk, I get the disk error & cord has fallen out. My previous unit did not have this problem. I wish I could return it but have had it too long. I hope it's backing up properly.

October 28, 2016
It is not worth the money. The actual speed are quite slow. I used it as a time capsule for my macBook but it is useless to have a 6gb transfer rate negotiated on the thunderbolt when the hdd maximum write speed is 86MB/s and read speed is 90.2MB/s. The actual hdd inside is a Seagate Samsung Spinpoint M8 ST1000LM024 that works at 5400 rpm. This is a $50 hdd with a $120 case. Seagate Momentus 1 TB 2.5-Inch SATA III 5400 RPM 8MB Cache Hard Drive Bare (ST1000LM024)You can see from the pictures captured with blackmagic what are the real hdd transfer speeds. These are speeds tested on thunderbolt so on USB the speed should be slower.
Thunderbolt on this is SLOWER than USB 3.0 on this drive.
November 9, 2015
The packaging suggests boldly in a graph that Thunderbolt has a top speed of 10GB/s, faster than USB 3.0 at 5GB/s. If you look at the very fine print on the bottom of the box though, it states clearly with the triple asterisk disclaimer that for the fastest throughput, the USB 3.0 connection must be used. It does work with Thunderbolt, but the implementation is slower than USB 3.0. False advertising.Edit: Also, the permanently attached wrap around cord is the Thunderbolt cable and they include a detachable USB 3.0 cord. It would be preferable if the faster USB connection were the one that is permanently attached since everyone has USB.

Real Problems
December 26, 2014
Based on the specifications, and the reviews of this storage device on Amazon, I bought two to solve my storage needs (at different times). Plus I also liked it's perceived `ruggedness' of product. The first device died after having it for the less than 24hours! It appears the controller card failed. The second drive lasted 6 months, it never failed but the heat issues were such that you could burn yourself, and hence I returned it. These devices were never abused and were used with care. I may have been unlucky, but it has stopped me buying another. Credit to Amazon for very good customer service with the issues I had. Do not take my word for it but search the Web and see other reviews and blogs, as I am not the only person to have real problems with these storage devices.

Beware, This Thunderbolt does not work with new MacBook Pro Thunderbolts ports
September 22, 2017
This product description and information is misleading. It says it is a Thunderbolt connector, but no where on any of the lengthly descriptions from seller or manufacturer does it say it is a Thunderbolt 2 connector which does not work or even connect to a Thunderbolt 3 or USB-C port. It takes another $50 adapter to connect this LaCie to a Thunderbolt 3/USB-C port. I had to contact LaCie support to learn that this LaCie is not compatible with a Thunderbolt 3/USB-C computer.
Worked great for about a year
April 11, 2017
Worked great for about a year, then the integrated thunderbolt cable stopped working so I had to send it in to LaCie for repairs. Had the same problem a little under 2 years later when it was past the warranty date. The USB part of it still works but I bought it because it can connect over Thunderbolt and I kind of expected it to last longer than a few years.
Partition Crashes Repeatedly
June 10, 2016
A month after purchase the partitions on my drive will just crash without warning/apparent reason leaving it unusable until I re-format the drive, which it just crashes again. Always kept it in a case while traveling and haven't dropped it at all so physical damage is not an obvious cause. A few of my co-workers have had a similar problem before. My company's IT department couldn't do anything with it but recover the files (It uses a Seagate drive and requires a $100 recovery program). They've never seen this before and it's really not clear if this is a Lacie problem where perhaps it wasn't constructed right, or I just got a crappy drive from Seagate.
Thunderbolt for Windows is a FAIL
March 14, 2016
If you say something is compatible with Thunderbolt on Windows, and then I fail for 3 hours trying to find information and drivers on your website, then you get one star...as far as I'm concerned this is a $250 brick.. I can buy a WD Mybook if I want USB 3.0 speeds. They include a card that says go to [...], however, the page is a 404.. Searching their support site for thunderbolt drivers eventually yields a result. I installed the drivers, reboot, plug in the drive to thunderbolt, and my USB ports stop working, and all other drives unmount.I'll reach out to them for support, and they may get some stars back, but the out of box experience with this drive for windows has been nothing short of terrible.(USB 3.0 does function by the way, but I spent way moremoney for thunderbolt functionality, and I feel ripped off.)
I generally like these little drives
March 30, 2015
I generally like these little drives, but these have a built in thunderbolt cable. It stopped working a months after we bought and now all we can use is the USB3.0 which is not as fast : (
Died after 2 months of use
March 11, 2015
Used this drive for video editing, transporting it cushioned in a messenger bag between multiple offices. After two months of use, the drive suddenly stopped working, throwing "not readable" errors. It no longer works.
