Great Little Espresso Machine
February 8, 2016
The KRUPS XP100 Steam Espresso Machine is an excellent espresso machine for the price. I shopped and compared many different brands online and in retail stores. After reading the reviews here on Amazon for this machine was sold. After receiving and using I can see why this machine had such good reviews. This machine functions and makes espresso comparable to much larger and higher priced espresso machines. This was purchased for my college aged daughter as a Christmas gift. The machine is very compact in size and is great for those with smaller kitchens or limited counter space. She's in a very tiny New York apartment and this fit into her petite sized kitchen just perfectly. She reports it makes top notch espresso and is comparable in quality to what a higher priced machine would make. She works as a barista in a known coffee store and knows good coffee! I'd recommend this to anyone looking for an affordable machine that delivers great espresso.
good machine, easy to use

The Krups Espresso maker/latte maker is working very well. I have tried changing the coffee, water, steam amounts and have arrived at the best solution for this altitude, 9000ft. At $30 & free shipping it was a good deal. I see the price is up now. Better yet when it completes a brew cycle there is no water in the heat cavity. My last one didn't evacuate the water, it froze and went to espresso maker Hell. It was a Delonghi and a good machine, it just cant winter over in its own. Frothing/foaming the milk is tricky but mostly because of the 9000 ft above sea level issue. So, if you want to enter the home espresso arena, this Krups is hard to beat. In time you may want something mo' fancy and you could move up to an Altar To Espresso if your kitchen is big enough for something just short of a Starbucks machine. The End.

I have had several Krups over the past ten years...first off, mine only last about 3-5 years then they seem to diminish in energy...meaning the steam doesn't come out as powerfully due to what we believe are the seals beginning to break down and lose their initial tightness. Given that history I purchased it anyway. It's easier to pay about $50 or so every two to three years rather than over $1000 (or higher) for the really good machines. This little machine is quite easy to use, the steamer works great, instructions easy to follow and the espresso is tasty. I didn't have any difficulties with the on off switch or the steamer location. The design of the steamer does make it a little harder to place the steamer pitcher but I just tip it a little and it fits. All in all, for the price, I find it quite acceptable.
Save dollars on coffee by using this machine when compared to machine paid around $2,000.00 dollars!

KRUPS XP 1000 Steam Espresso or cappuccino machine quality price for sure base in my experience over20 years I used the top Italian most famous brand programmable with maximum features. Prices of those machine are 50 times more expensive than the model of XP 1000, because we talk here close $2,000.00(two thousand) dollars. Machine complicate to repair in the six large cities in USA NO repair man coulddo it, and either the Italian corporation could find a technician. It was the reason I buy this Krups coffee machine to test before receive the new expensive machine from other know brand. Now here the result of my personal test this model Krups XP 1000 produce stronger espresso or cappuccino with exactly haft (less -50%) amount of the pure fine grinded coffee also using the same distilled water, this personal test was done same time and day with same coffee blend using same tools.

This is the best little coffee machine that I own (and I own many). While it only makes one cup at a time, you can make that cup as strong as you like because of the generously sized grounds reservoir. This unit blows away our expensive pump style Starbucks branded machine. The coffee is much hotter (although it does kick out a good bit of steam) and it is much stronger. Also I feel clean up is easier. For folks that need to make more than one cup at a time, this is not the machine for you.
Best Compact Espresso Maker... Can't Live Without It
May 31, 2014
I decided to take time to update and give this awesome Espresso Machine the review it deserves, in return for the thousands of cups of "Hi -Rev Java Joy" it has given to me as a bachelor. I have used both models of this machine for many years. The XP1000 Espresso Machine is my faithful "Morning Companion" everyday and I depend on it. To get ONE large perfect cup of Espresso I do the following: 1. Grind exotic coffee beans to a semi-dust consistency. 2. Fill the filter holder almost completely full of grind and tamp it down "semi-firm" just below the top, insert it into the machine and tighten it firmly. 3. Fill the carafe almost full of good cold water and pour it into the heating tank, then tighten the lid VERY tightly. 4. For cappuccino, creamy latte or mochas turn the the valve knob to steam after about 90 seconds and froth the cold milk in a deep enough cup to avoid splatter, then return the knob to Espresso to finish brewing. For fast espresso simply turn the knob to espresso and in 4 minutes the "Magic Medicine" is ready.I leave the machine on for a few minutes after brewing is completed, allowing the used coffee "puck" to harden, as it will come right out in one piece with a light tap. The easy to clean lower tray is great. The XP1000 works much better than the older model 1020 that exploded and blew coffee grounds all over the house because of a faulty pressure relief valve. You don't have to hide behind the couch anymore while using this new model, as they upgraded the relief valve. The XP 1000 really makes great Jo with fresh Arrowhead Bottled Water, a super fine grind of premium dark roast beans, and a light tamp down. One little bad thing, the small plastic retainers for the carafe lid break off after time, but it still stays in place. There is no auto shut off, so be sure and turn it off before leaving the house. The older style 1505 carafe had a nice hinged lid, but the handles were weak and broke easily. I am so addicted to this machine, I keep one brand new machine and two spare carafes on hand... if it were to break and I had no spare it would be..THE END OF THE WORLD! For the price this is best Compact Espresso Machine that I have ever used. I love it and have been very satisfied with it's dependability, ease of use and great espresso coffee variants it produces. Update #2: I was recently noticing an unusual difference in time of brewing, it was becoming very slow......then even slower. I decided to do an "autopsy" and tear it down after ordering another spare. I now know this machine inside and out. If you own one and it begins to take more and more time to brew and steam escapes from the lid you have a problem. It is absolutley a MUST to decalcify these machines regularly with the recomended solution. There is a valve behind the Function knob..deep inside and very difficult to get to. It can become clogged easily and cause slow brew times and overheating. I managed to completely dissassemble and reassemble this unit, after a sound cleaning with Limeaway and compressed air. I now have another working spare for emergencies and/or parts. Life expectancy on the XP1000 is...2-3 years depending on the hardness and mineral content of your water and how often you decalcify.

Amazing performance, amazing price

The cost is so low and the thing works so well, there is pretty much no reason not to buy one of these. Just divide the cost by how much you'd spend out buying coffee drinks and it's a no brainer. As someone else noted, even if it dies every year it's worth just buying another. I replaced a very basic Braun espresso maker and this one is far better. Makes excellent espresso. The frother works just fine. Needed to buy a carafe, but you can find cheap ones that look and fit fine. I like the large water reservoir and fast startup. The size fits well on my counter. It is not nearly as loud and shaky as the De'Longhi ECP3420 I sent back. It does have operational step sequences you have to figure out, and one idiosyncrasy after you stop steam, but once you learn it, no problem. Easy to clean.
This maching is awesome

This was a great investment for me at $60. It produces better espresso than what Starbucks puts out most of the time. I use it for iced drinks only so I cant speak for steamed milk and whatnot. I read several reviews before ordering and some people complained of water tank leaks, I read another review that said to circumvent the issue you should only remove the water tank for cleaning, and I have not had any issues with it yet. The only issue I have had is if you grind the coffee too fine or tamp it too tight coffee will leak out around the gasket that seals the portafilter basket. I love this machine and I have had it for 6 months so far I will update my review if the machine dies within the next 12 months, if it serves its purpose for 18 months total I will consider it money well spent.Just for reference I brew about 10 shots a week average.
Great for the Price--Treat with care tho. How-to tips below:
January 17, 2017
Great machine for the price. Steaming arm actually works on this generation. A few notes: 1. Take off and throw away the rubber/plastic thing on the steaming wand. 2. prime the steaming wand; a good squirt of water comes out first; you don't want that in your milk!!. 3. prime the brew head as well for a few secs--twice; some cold water will get in your coffee if you don't. 4. after you're done brewing and have removed the portafilter, rinse the brewhead by just priming it for a couple secs--twice. This will get any coffee grounds off the "showerhead." 5. ALWAYS brew into clear shot glasses; 25-30 secs MAX. If you're not getting two oz. of espresso by 30 secs, your grind is too fine or too packed. Less than 25 secs??? Grind finer or pack more for good strong shots. A simple digital kitchen timer is all you need. Also, if you don't know what a good shot looks like; heart, body, crema, ask a Barista at your Local GOOD Coffeehouse; not Starbucks. They don't even make their own shots!! THIS CANNOT BE OVER-EMPHASIZED: Don't run shots for volume; run for time. Pump Espresso machines are under A LOT of steam pressure stress as they're working, and this one at less that $100 of course is not gonna be beefy and overbuilt inside for strength. Using good technique as mentioned above, I've gotten months of trouble-free use outta this Baby and not had to pay $4 a day for lattes at the shop. I also De-scale it after every 2 pounds of coffee with Goo Gone's cleaner. Enjoy!!
Seriously impressed as a former barista
October 17, 2016
Excellent machine. Have been using it for several months straight with no problems. Lattes definitely get hot enough for my preference and in a two story home no one can hear it upstairs. I clean the frother every time and haven't experienced any leaking yet. I suspect that mainly comes from positioning the water tank poorly or not dumping the tray enough. I fill my tank with fresh water as needed instead of picking it up to avoid issues. As others have noted, no milk pitcher or espresso cups are included. As an exBux partner, I would really recommend this machine if you want something reliable and budget-friendly.
Mr Coffee espresso machine
September 5, 2016
This machine is very good for the price. It makes good espresso shots, however I found the steam wand a bit tricky to use. It is kind a too short but once you get used to it, it will be no problem. It also needs cleaning after each use, otherwise it will not work properly due to the clog from the milk, It does not perform like 1000+ bucks machine, but the result is close enough if done properly. I have not had any leak problem as noted by other users, and I have this machine for about 3 months.
The key is the pressurized portafilter design, guarantees a quality espresso shot
January 8, 2015
*Update*: Still like this machine but just beware that the screws in the water tank rust. The rust crumbles off and falls onto a ledge inside the water tank, not directly into the water, but it's possible little pieces of rust can tumble into the water. This machine is a great value for the quality of espresso you get out of it. The portafilter (the thing that holds the coffee) is pressurized (read up on pressurized vs non-pressurized portafilters), which is the key to why this is a safe beginner machine. A pressurized portafilter will not release coffee until enough pressure has built up within the basket, extracting dense flavor, the key to a good espresso. Non-pressurized portafilters rely on the fine grain of espresso ground coffee being tightly compacted into the basket (called tamping) to provide a similar resistance (fyi, espresso snobs demand a non-pressurized basket supposedly because it gives more control over the extraction process). This machine is designed to work better with coarser regular ground coffee (for drip machines), but I HIGHLY recommend you do not do that. Buy a burr grinder and find a grind somewhere between coarser filter coffee and very fine espresso coffee that you like best. Very fine espresso coffee will clog in this machine's portafilter, which is actually good because you won't have to buy a $500 coffee grinder in order to get the right size grind (by the way, very fine coffee works best in non-pressurized portafilters, which the snobs like). Another complaint about pressurized baskets is that the crema can be watery, flavorless, and dissipates quickly because it's basically water bubbles. For some reason, this machine makes great oily crema that is creamy and long-lasting. I love making Americanos with this machine for this reason (it creates a creamy cup of coffee much different than a regular cup of coffee). Milk steamer is adequate, but I suggest beginners watch youtube videos on how to steam milk properly. Buy a small milk pitcher because the spout is short (I use a 12 oz bought on amazon). Love this machine.

Great product
September 19, 2015
Had the mr coffee version of this but takes up more space and doesn't look as nice it does steam better and faster than the krups. This krups machine is great for a cheap grade espresso maker. I have only one complaint for this product an that is the cappuccino plastic attachment. It does not froth your milk well at all so I took it off which means I use the metal part and is a little harder to clean now.All in all this is a must buy if you do not have the space nor the money for a higher grade machine.
Good affordable manual espresso maker... not as nice as the much older model, but that's progress!
August 3, 2015
I like the product, because it is relatively small and it works. I owned the much older model before it finally broke (the relief valve in the cap broke away), and I preferred it because it was even smaller, more rectangular (which I like better), and had a toggle switch for the power. The rotary switch on this newer unit is a bit hard to turn, because it turns power on/off and it opens/closes a steam valve at the same time. Some people without a strong finger grip would find it very uncomfortable to use. Still, the simplicity of the machine (it is a very affordable, basic, manual espresso maker) is what I wanted. The new feature of turning off the steam as well as the power does mean that drips stop sooner, but the residual steam pressure in the boiler needs to be released before making another cup. That requires venting by turning the switch to the milk froth maker, either after it has cooled off, or by pulling the plug and venting so that the boiler does not come on again. I usually pull the plug and vent. I don't think that the extra sophistication is worth it, since I never froth milk.
Now, my girlfriend is a cappuccino addict

A much-belated replacement for the over-used half of the Krups Caffe Duomo that lasted twelve years. Same carafe, slightly different filter basket. This machine is certainly quicker than the old one. No complaints about the filler cap being hard to remove; firm hand-tightness is sufficient. The frothing nozzle does need to be cleaned (wiped off) after use, otherwise it will clog. You won't realize you can't froth until it's too late! Then, you're stuck with an espresso with cold milk, and that's just not as tasty. I actually use it without the black, plastic protector around the nozzle, just so I can be sure there's no obstruction.Word to the wise: skim milk seems to froth better for me than whole milk.
Fill with 7 ounces of filtered water and fine ground medium to dark roast espresso or desired coffee ...
January 9, 2015
It takes some practice to get it down to be sure your getting the creme on top. Fill with 7 ounces of filtered water and fine ground medium to dark roast espresso or desired coffee beans - (filled to the top - very full and then slightly tamped). Have your frothing pitcher ready with approx. 5 - ounces of milk. * I use coconut milk (sweetened) and when your espresso starts to drip be ready to turn nozzle to frothing when level reaches the steaming picture on the carafe. My nozzle cover cracked after just a few months of use. I taped it and it worked for awhile. Just ordered a new one for $10.00 but I think I should have sought out for a warranty on it.
Nice Espresso Machine for the price
March 10, 2014
We were concerned about this product based on some of the low ratings, but decided the price was right, and had good luck with another Krups product in the past.First off, I am not a sophisticated latte maker. Just use the basics of the machine to make the coffee, and then the frother to heat the milk. This machine works great for those two actions. We ran a vinegar and water solution through the machine before using, then straight water, for 4-5 cycles. This eliminated any plastic odor in the coffee. The frother comes with a plastic cover, and I removed that the first time I used it. I found it trapped milk, and there is no down side to using just the metal wand to heat the milk. When you turn the switch from making the coffee to using the wand, make sure the wand is under the milk. I make the mistake of having the wand a bit above the milk surface, and found a lot of splattered milk on my floor and counter. Rookie mistake. Also, since the unit is new, I have to be very careful to make sure the coffee basket slides into the maker properly. It is a bit stiff and with only two guides on the basket unit, make sure you are completely flush with the unit before letting go of the handle. The machine heats the water quickly, provides good pumping action for the espresso, and lots of pressure in the wand to heat the milk.I would rate this product as very good.
This is OK.
January 24, 2014
I use this daily now.I had another brand that was better but I had to leave it at a remote location.Good: Fast and silent. The top platform is convenient for setting parts on when done. The top cap is nice and wide so it gives great leverage when opening and sealing. The pitcher is well built and its top snaps into place and stays in place when pouring the coffee.Bad: Coffee filter is not keyed with slot... so it comes with the flimsey plastic retainer flip to hold the filter in place when dumping the extremely hot coffee grounds. The plastic flip has come off several times. Probably their designers just never compared or considered this. The frothing nozzel is too close to the stage, so I carefully bent it outwards to have room to froth easily. All in all it was a fair price and it works. I prefer a simple machine like this.Added after reading other reviews: All frothing nozzels clog with use, and you should use final pressure of the vessel to blow the nozzel clean. I also forgot and it clogged. But cleaning is easy. And buildup is removed with white vinagre, just fill the pitcher with white vinegre and prop it up so the nozzel is submerged. The buildup practically falls off.FYI. I use Cafe Britt from Costa Rica, regular grind. The mud is just a function of the size of the grind and all ground coffee has a percentage of smaller particles. Just pour your coffee instead of dumping it into your cup. Leave the remaining mud in the pitcher. Really not an issue, unless you are stubborn and insist on using a grind that is too fine.BTW, this machine makes great cafe con leche/cappuccino.

Great coffee but some problems
April 3, 2017
I would give it 3.5 stars if I could. The reason is because the portafilter- the thing you put the coffee in and twist on, has never twisted all the way on. You are supposed to twist it from the far left to the middle of the machine like you see in the picture. I can't move mine more than 50 degrees because it is incredibly hard to twist. It barely fits on and the machine is so light, there is absolutely no leverage. It's a hassle. But I love the flavor of the coffee. And I have trouble with my frother working sometimes. I have to turn the entire machine all the way off and on again, sometimes several times before the frother/steamer works. You will hear it pump, but the steam does't come on. I clean it each and every time and have plenty of water in the machine, so I'm not sure why it is temperamental. I have used almond milk just fine in the frother. I would recommend getting a pitcher to steam your milk that is not too large because the tip of the wand doesn't reach very far down. And don't get one very small because the volume doubles.
Good espresso, especially for seafarers.
October 26, 2016
We've found this espresso machine to make fairly decent espresso and cappuccino. Our particular unit is a bit noisy - the pump makes a sound that resembles a fog horn. It's not awful, but can be annoying if there are bedrooms located near the kitchen and people are still sleeping while the coffee is being prepared by early risers. For those who are seafarers and are using this on board a sailing vessel, however, this sound can be very useful during times of fog and heavy mist. Design-wise it would be nice to have all of the controls on the front of the unit. Having the power switch and brew/steam control on the right side requires a bit more room on that side of the machine to access these. Again, this is not awful, but for those with very limited counter space - such as a galley on the aforementioned sailing vessel - this can be an issue. The reservoir has ample capacity for a machine this size. It can be helpful to have a light source near the unit for easier viewing of the water level in the reservoir without having to remove it. While there have been a few detractors with this machine for our family, it has been a good espresso and cappuccino maker overall, especially within this price range.
I like it.
October 17, 2016
I've had the unit for four days and pulled twelve shots so far. It has worked perfectly. There was a small leak from the back of the machine when I first tried it, but that was because I had not seated the water reservoir firmly enough. Since I figured that out it has been dry.The espresso is just like at the coffee shop. The frother works well, but could be easier to clean. I'm not sure HOW it could be easier to clean, but the rubber frothing attachment is a little fussy to remove frequently. No big deal.Over all I'm very happy with the purchase, and would tell you to buy one with confidence. The quality exceeds the price.UPDATE: Six months later and it is still going strong. I use it every day and love it.
Great beginner machine, not for picky or professional baristas
September 26, 2016
I am not a professional by any means, but I was a barista at a successful "mom n pop" coffee shop for a year, so I know how to pull a good shot and properly steam milk. I like good coffee, but I'm not a stickler. I wanted to be able to make my own espresso for americanos and the occasional latte at home. I did my research and decided on this machine because it's under 100 bucks which is what I was looking for. I also was looking at the Hamilton beach one that's under 100, and the delonghi. I know that's a better brand but this machine was a little cheaper and had similar reviews. This one is very user friendly, you definitely don't have to have barista experience to get a shot from it. Extreme coffee people might say it doesn't pull a "real" shot because it doesn't require espresso fine ground coffee (real espresso grounds should be as fine as powdered sugar and fit between the lines of your fingerprint) you can actually use it with regular ground coffee for a drip machine, although I use a burr grinder and have it set somewhere in between the two. You don't need to buy a different tamper; the one it comes with is definitely the worst tamper I've ever seen, but with this machine you really don't need a heavy tamper to pack it down hard, because it doesn't make pucks. Even after a decent shot, the leftover grounds come out as sludge instead of a puck, but it seems that's just how this machine works. It's definitely not coffee shop quality but if you want to be able to make coffee that is more than just black brew from a drip machine, then this gets the job done. I like it a lot, it's not for you if you're going to be picky about a syrupy vs runny shot, or how many seconds it takes, but if you just want some espresso with a good layer of yummy crema from your own home for well less than a hundred bucks then this is for you. I can't speak for how long it lasts because I've only had it for less than a month but I've used it multiple times every day and it's working great.
Brews good espresso but oft retains brew in filter making messy refill ...
July 6, 2016
Surprise, still working after 7 months of heavy use. Brews good espresso but oft retains brew in filter making messy refilling. Get the insurance, you will likely use it before expiration. Empty water tank nightly and air dry. Wipe brew nozzle area frequently. Don't overfill filter, place grind about 1/8th inch from top of filter. Clean tray daily. We don't froth, so no comment.12/29/2016 UPDATE: BUY the INSURANCE: Worked well, multiple cups per day, for 13 months but died quietly after a morning espresso. The insurance required item return but provided return shipping. Once received provided full refund. Yep, I will buy another one + insurance, This lasted longer than I expected and the espresso is good. Expensive machines usually require annual service; this unit is a best buy, for me.
We are addicted!
August 10, 2012
This is a great machine! When I worked, we had a $6000.00 machine and I can't say it was better! The only thing it did was grind/fill/dump old coffee grounds. I can't say that is worth $5925.00! Seriously, this machine make a perfect Espresso and Cappuccino. We use the dark whole beans at Sam's club and grind a small counter-top storage container at a time with our magic bullet. Highly recommend this over a coffee bean grinder. It isn't as messy, easy to use, washable and you can see when the beans are ready. You have to play around with the fineness of the grounds, ours are almost power like. We also removed the rubber piece from the steam wand. Again, you have to learn how to froth your milk. It only takes about 1 to 1.5" at the bottom of your stainless frothing cup. You have to swirl, lift and dip - I find the best froth comes when you put the tip just before removing it from the milk. It takes a little while to get to this point, just keep moving it. Otherwise, you will burn the milk. Patients and practice! When we first started, it seemed like it took forever to make just 1 cup. Now, it is quick and easy. I make my cup while heating my daughters pancakes in the toaster. It is that quick and easy! The only downfall is the height where you place your cup. We like using the double cup and making a large coffee mug. You have to tilt the cup to get it underneath - same to remove it. Since you have to leave space for your froth, it doesn't spill... it would just be easier if we didn't have to do this. @ Mr. Coffee: raising it just a 1/2" would solve this problem!

Not bad...
March 20, 2017
Purchased in Sept 2015. Used 2-3x daily for 18+ months before any issues. Never really got a good créma out of it, though. Now, it works correctly every 3rd or 4th attempt, but usually loses quite a bit of coffee/water as just steam. Troubleshot it, cleaned it several times and different ways, tamped the coffee both more and less (several times each) to determine what causes it...to no avail. At $59.95, I'm not exactly disappointed, but it's a far cry from the $200 Krups pump machine this replaced. That sucker lasted more than a decade.
she likes good coffee, but never operated an espresso maker before
December 15, 2015
I got this as a present for my mother, she likes good coffee, but never operated an espresso maker before. I thought it would be a little easier. I was wrong! I was annoyed that you have to add exact amount of water all the time and after steaming the milk there is steam caught and I was afraid that it can be dangerous.Mom got used to it, but next year I'll get her a better model.
Decent latte. Like the older basic Krups machines better
May 14, 2015
Makes a decent latte. I've used the older Krups models for 20+ years but it took many tries to get the hang of this one. Knob to switch between drip and froth is very stiff and difficult to turn. I like the older basic machines better.
It is a machine that works... most of the time.
February 9, 2015
While the espresso side of the machine makes excellent coffee, the steam side of the machine does get clogged quite often. Furthermore, if you want to make a full batch of espresso and finish with steaming the milk, I find that I need to add more water to the pressurized water chamber to make enough steam. It makes me nervous every time to vent off the pressure before adding more water to finish making my drink, so be aware that you may run out of water halfway through your process. Overall, it is a machine that works most of the time, and you get a nice cup of espresso from the espresso part.
Stylish but harder to use; like the old model better
April 28, 2014
Looks fancy, but: - The control knob is small and harder to twist, and feels flimsier. - The steam chamber cap is curved so as to make it harder to grip and remove. - The "On" light is further from the control knob than I remember, so you don't get the feedback (or the reminder to turn it off!). - The carafe looks quite similar, but when the lid is on, it spills coffee down the front onto the counter. - The light gray tray the carafe sits on is harder to clean, requiring disassembly for full cleaning. (I just rinse every week or two.)On the bright side, they got rid of the bump on the filter basked that made you line it up just so with the holder. Makes coffee just fine, maybe a little faster (though that could be because it's new). Not sure what the "fenced-in" area on top is supposed to hold, if anything.Hope they go back to larger controls that are easier to turn when steam-dampened.
Okay, but with some drawbacks

This machine makes a tasty cup of cappuccino or cafe latte, but it does leave some grounds in the bottom of the carafe. So I always leave the last few drops of coffee in the carafe and not pour it into my milk. It takes a while to get used to having only one knob for both the steaming and the coffee brewing and you have to pass by the off setting to go between them. Yet, there is a warning in the instructions not to stop at the off setting while the machine is hot and under pressure. I ask myself, "Why?" What specifically will happen. But nevertheless I am very careful to twist the know quickly between the steaming setting, past the off setting, to the brew setting, but it is a little unnerving. Plus, it doesn't have an on and off button, so the only way to be reminded that it is on, is if the tiny light in the front at the top of the machine is red. I didn't notice it one day, left for work, and left it on all day. Now I try to always remember that I have to unplug it every time I use it. Otherwise, it was a great price for an expresso machine.

ive had a few espresso machines, and including a few of this model. The expresso handle on a few doesnt turn, and even the manufacturer simply said to return it. The steamer is also very short, so very little milk can be processed at once.

This espresso maker worked like a dream for the first year and then for no reason the steamer function stopped working. When it was working properly the espresso always had a nice crema and the steamer made nice frothed milk. Aside from it not lasting, it is a very loud machine and when the espresso function is working the machine shakes a lot.All in all, I'd say it was well worth it for an affordable espresso machine. I used it 4-5 times per week for one year. It certainly saved me a lot of money.
Okay for money

This was half off when I bought it. It works fine, but here are the cons:1. Noisy when on, so much so my dog barks while it's brewing2. Does not auto stop when cups are filled, so you must stand and watch it brew to turn off process at desired "coffee" level per cup3. The coffee grind holder was almost impossible to turn during initial uses. Getting a little better, but was concerned I would bust it.Pros:1. Price very reasonable when purchased as it was half off original listing2. Built in water tank3. Easy use
Good espresso. Steamer is iffy.
June 19, 2017
The steamer doubles the volume of my milk by the time it's 100 degrees. The milk starts to bubble over the pitcher before it's even hot. There is no way to control the level of steam and prevent this from happening, so I usually just microwave my milk. One trick could be to microwave my milk and then add froth on top. Meh.... but the espresso part is good! I might invest in a heavier tamper.
If you want a cheap espresso machine this is the one to get.
May 1, 2017
It's a cheap espresso machine, so you get exactly what you pay for. It makes great lattes, but there's some design flaws. The steamer handle is short so you can't reach the bottom of a normal sized cup.It takes a while to switch from the espresso to the steamer, and the little button/nob combo is annoying. It will literally vibrate your cup off of the platform and spill everywhere so definitely keep an eye on it.
ECMP50 Doesn't last very long
May 10, 2011
Update 7/25/13: It died. No amount of vinegar cleaning worked. The pump sounds like it fizzled out. We got 2 1/2 years out of it, so I guess I got my $75 worth. I tried to replace the steamer nozzle last fall, but couldn't get into the housing, so I used pliers and squeezed the housing around the nipple. It held. We've replaced it with anoher Krups (XP601050). It just came and sounds stronger than the Mr Coffee machine. We'll see.Origninal: I wanted to wait a few months before writing a review. We had a Krups for about 10 yrs prior and the hard water finally did it in. I didn't want to spend much, so I took a chance on the ECMP50. Everything is fine except that the threads inside the steamer nozzle arm stripped about a month after we got it. I never used the rubber cover on our prior machine and didn't use it on this for cleaning purposes. Now, I just leave the rubber cover on all the time and hope the machine lasts me a few years.Other than that, it works fine.

Does not really male espresso...
July 12, 2016
I bought this as a replacement for a Krups auto tamping pump style espresso maker I had for 10 years. Yes, it didn't look like what I had before, but Krups Customer Support told me it was the current model to replace what I had. Well, I'd never recommend it as a replacement for the auto tamping pump style. I have used it for many months now, and it doesn't make what I'd call espresso, but just regular coffee. It does not produce that nice creamy foam, nor a rich thick flavor. I'd say the design of this machine is a big fail on Krups part. I still will buy Krups again, but hold out for the auto tamping pump style again.
So sad, so bad.
June 5, 2016
I am very disappointed with a brand name that once stood for quality. This is a very cheaply constructed unit and way over priced and of course, made in China.Update Feb 13, 2017: the handle to the filter is cracking and very loose. The handle cracked at the seam where it connects to the neck of the filter. The handle action for removing the filter.unit is too much for the cheap construction. The design is poor and the materials are cheap .Krups has lost a long time customer.
They Don't Make 'Em Like They Used To
March 3, 2016
One year after purchasing this, I can say that the Krups XP1000 still makes coffee, but it has not met expectations; it certainly hasn't served me as well as one I had for 20 years. Krups appears to have really has cheapened it products. The handle on the filter holder is loose; it heats up slow; and it drips long after the coffee is made. Also the power knob still is relatively difficult to turn on and off, and I don't like having to toggle between drip and froth like it's set up to do. Only good thing to say about it, is that the plastic piece over the frother is easier to clean. Like I said, I loved my old Krups espresso maker. It was built to last. I don't see the Krups XP 1000 serving me as well.
DON'T DO IT!
January 8, 2016
We are still mourning the loss of our Espresso ravo Krups model #871 which we happily used for at least 12 years! Krups took it off the market, so we figured their "new improved version" would be a fine substitute. The time and aggravation for each successful coffee is at least twice that of our first maching. I agee that the steamer is a disappointing bit of enineering...the steaming container barely fits and therefore makes frothing a real challenge. I could go on about the disfunction...just wish I had read the reviews before ordering. Please bring back the 871! Perfect ease ... an espresso/cappucino marvel.
An ok unit to experiment with. Not for the long haul.
June 6, 2015
This is something you would get when you starting out experimenting with making espresso/cappuccino yourself. You'll quickly find that it's inadequate in terms of making a proper cut of espresso, or milk frothing. This is a steam espresso maker, off the bat, there's not enough pressure to espresso the way it's meant to be made. a real cup of espresso will require 8 bars of pressure to extract the flavor and aroma, while steam will only provide you with 2 bars, which is about 28psi. the picture you see in the product page is misleading. you'll likely never be able to make a cup of espresso with the type of golden brown and foam on top. to do that, you'll require at least 6~8 bars of pressure. which is where the pump based espresso unit comes in (aka, more expensive models). i learned all this after i got the unit and started doing research.but the one most annoying thing you'll quickly find is that the frothing doesn't work very well. Also due to the low pressure of a steam based unit, the frothing will only spit out enough pressure (roughly 2 bars), which isn't enough to get the THICK foam you would want for a nice cup of Latte. you can use whole milke, and it'll come really close due to the high content of fat. you can forget about frothing with 2% or low fat, it'll just come out as warm milk. you'll really need high pressure pump based unit to achieve thick foam frothing. i quickly found myself looking for a replacement 3 weeks after using this unit.don't get me wrong, at its current price, it's not a bad deal for someone to get into the game and experiment with. But you'll quickly find that you'll need to step up to something that's more adequate, like a pump based unit. I ordered a EC155 pump based unit to replace this. and the frothing comes out perfect no matter what type of milk, with golden brown foamy espresso extract.

Good expresso, short lifespan
November 9, 2017
This is a 2 star review for one reason: short lifespan. The machine works well as advertised, and the expresso is good quality--I have used it twice a day (or more) for two years, and I can validate the results of the more positive reviews here. However, after the first year, it began to leak water from underneath with every use. At first, it was only a small amount, but gradually the leak has become worse; now, it leaks twice as much water as the amount of expresso it produces in a single use, and I have to replace it. My previous expresso maker, a Krupps, lasted almost 15 years before failing. In contrast, the Mr. Coffee gave me one year of trouble free service before it began to fail; I will not buy one again.
Not impressive!
September 6, 2017
This is a replacement from the first one which didnt work...this does work but not really impressed. Its pretty rough when its brewing it shakes so bad it moves the cup so u must hold it. And the drip tray? It actually is leaking water into it!! Im thinking this one is going back.!!!! Its not a smooth operating machine..its really loud and rough sounding.
Flimsy
June 18, 2017
Ok but not worth money and time. Parts are plastic and it's flimsy. The espresso cup is very hard to get in place without bending over and looking up. It's very loud! I wanted to try it but now I'm going to spend more and get something with nicer components.
Wish it could heat longer but good for the price
April 7, 2017
Has trouble heating up milk. Takes 3-4 minutes to get to 140. And normally stops after that. Wish it could heat longer but good for the price. Espresso comes out nicely! My problem now is after 4-5 months the milk frother refuses to work. I bought the 3 year warranty and they just told me to call the manufacturer even though it is past the time allowment. Now I have all this coffee syrups/espresso/pitcher/etc. and a machine that doesn't work anymore. I used to be a barista and clean it after every use, very disappointed now.
Use yours often during your 1st 30 days, to verify its up to par.
November 19, 2016
Ive used this machine maybe a dozen times in the past 6 wks. You get what you pay for, I guess. Maybe I should've waited and gotten a more midline product. The espresso seems to always be overly bitter. It just tastes a bit off. But I always do a cappucino, so I was hoping the frother would be cooperative and balance out the flavor. However, the frother seems to be malfunctioning. Its properly cleaned each time. But the lights are all blinking and it shut off yesterday during use. Ugh! Waiting on amazon to open so I can open a ticket. Crossing my fingers. I should've used it more during the 1st 30 days.

February 13, 2015
This is the second ECMP50 I have purchased and both have had the same problem. The porta filter does not rotate into locked position. It will only travel about 30 degrees not 95 degrees to full locked position. This occurs even with no grounds in the basket. I called the company to ask if this is a known problem with the machine. They avoided the question and looked to see if they had more stock to send a replacement ( they had none ).They said to return it to Amazon. I am surprised not to see more complaints about this issue. I tried to make some espresso and found a lot of water was released from the canister into the drip tray below the cup. It comes from the bottom which is why people are experiencing leaks. It seemed to make nice micro foam however I am returning it because of the defect in the filter lock. I am very disappointed because I thought the first one was an anomaly....now I am not so sure.

Component surface failure
April 21, 2017
The cast metal unit that has the black plastic handle that holds the stainless steel filter basket quickly loses its thin chrome plated-like surface and turns a powdery light gray color that every time I touch it I get a black powdery residue on my fingers. I emailed Krups about this and they sent me a replacement one in the mail but the same thing happened to it. I find it disconcerting that this black powdery residue exists and I wonder if it might not be getting into the coffee?

Horrible! I too wanted a replacement for an older model that stopped working. The drip tray used to be square. This one is curved. I cannot place my metal carafe any more without a risk of overturning and possible injury. The boiler cap gets so hot that you have to wait until it cools down. I spoke with Krups's customer service - I would not call it that. A totally indifferent person said that since I got it on Amazon they will not do anything about it. After three decades of using this brand it is NO MORE KRUPS for me!
Beware of Receiving Someone Else's Defective and Returned Machine
September 1, 2015
Believe all the negative reviews that you are reading about this product! Most of all, BEWARE of receiving someone else's used, defective, and returned machine (most likely returned for the same handful of reason that you will return your's). Note to seller: If you're going to go to the effort of cleaning, polishing, and repackaging a defective product, just to send it off to the next customer, be sure to remove the plastic frothing nozzle cover and clean the metal wand underneath. Disgusting!
Very disappointed..
August 30, 2015
Very disappointed... I've used a Krups 963 for years, made coffee and frothed milk with no problems. It finally wore out and had to be replaced. This unit produced extremely hot coffee, and only a small amount of frothed milk. The control knob from coffee to off to frothing was hard to operate. The steaming nozzle is poorly designed, too close to the body of the coffee maker to allow for proper frothing. I didn't have the problem some had with the lid leaking steam. Used it four times, no improvement in the coffee produced. It is being returned. An additional comment - over the years of buying from Amazon I've returned a few items, and Amazon has always provided a paid return label. This time the return label is costing me $9....
I bought this machine thinking that it would be better than good old Mr Coffe espresso machine
July 31, 2015
I bought this machine thinking that it would be better than good old Mr Coffe espresso machine.Well the answer is definitely NOT.The espresso holder leaked water the very first use!Let's say if this was a manufacturing flaw that can be fixed, my biggest issue with this unit is the milk frother. The nozzle is u fortunately fixed and is located in very unsuitable location. You just can't have regular coffee cub underneath it.Lastly the espresso, steam and off switch is very hard to turn and it has NO option to let the water heat up at good temperature before the start of espresso or frother. This was a deal killer for me and just the bad design. So I had to return the unit right after the first use.Still looking for decent espresso machine that does the job and don't break in 6 months under 150 bucks.
Kriups fails on the replacement of their workhorse espresso machine
March 22, 2014
I've used the Krups XP 1020 for 25 years. They replaced it with this piece of junk. This one does a horrible job of frothing and uses way too much water than it should to steam. Every time I used it I was afraid it would explode. It doesn't allow use of enough grounds to make anything more than a miserably weak cup of espresso. I returned it and bought another XP 1020 on eBay.

NOPE! Dont buy this! Just dont do it!
October 5, 2017
Well... it makes espresso. The frother is absolute crap though. It just spits and hisses at you, and doesn't heat the milk. So far the frother has worked once out of about 8 attempts, and we've gone over the instructions repeatedly, following them exactingly every time.*** 3 weeks of use later***It's mean if out the bottom. Not from the water container. Not from there the container plugs into the machine. But from somewhere on the bottom that I have yet to find. And it's not a little dribble either! It's a full on, losing 1/4th cup every 30 seconds or so (that's being generous on the timing ). Besides that I'm not sure I can get the bottom plastic off to try and repair it, so THANKS Mr. Coffee, for making this crummy machine >:(
Massive leaks after a year of daily use.
September 13, 2017
Things that I didn't like but really didn't matter overall:1. Machine is very loud.2. No automatic shut off at end of shotThe reason I'm giving this one star however is because after about a year, this machine started leaking like nobody's business. It's not that the tray is filling up because the water never makes it to the tray and just leaks from somewhere under the machine. I'm soaking 2-3 hand towels each time I brew 4 shots because it leaks so badly.I've read enough reviews on here to realize this is a common problem with this machine, don't waste your money on it.
failure
September 4, 2017
after going through 2 of these in 4 months i am leaving my review. both machines when brand new work perfect. after about 2 months the pump starts getting weak. at the the 4 month mark the pump barely has enough pressure to brew a shot of coffee. i use a burr grinder set the same the whole time, ive ordered the same beans, nothing changes, they are just not made to withstand the needs of making 1 coffee per day,
Poorly made and very loud
August 15, 2017
I would advise to not buy this machine! For starters the filter wouldn't even fit into the machine without ALOT of muscle. Second, once I turned it on it sounded like a freight train. I didn't even make a cup of coffee before returning it.
Did not even turn on!
March 12, 2017
I bought this for my sister and it did not work so I had to return it and got a different brand. I would have thought that these guys were a better maker, but now I know to buy from someone else.
