Very Nice Little Printer
April 15, 2015
Let me preface this by saying that I probably have filled a small dumpster with the HPs I have used at home and in my small office. This Brother printer, in fact, replaced hopefully the last HP I will ever have to mess with. The Brother is still running on the "sample" ink cartridges that came with the machine....impressive. I like that the ink levels are apparent in the little display screen and I don't have to scramble around trying to find the ink levels within programming. Using standard, decent but not stupidly expensive paper, we have had no jams or feed issues. Probably not overfilling the paper tray helps in this regard. Print quality is fine and the print rate is typical for this price point machine. It runs fairly quietly (note my quiet scale is a bit warped by the early pin printers that literally drowned out all ambient sounds in a room).I set this printer up for 4 laptops, 3 IPads and 2 IPhones with little or no difficulty. The laptops were running XP, Vista Home Premium and Win8, and each required a little tweaking that should not present much of a problem unless this is your first rodeo. In which case have a friend who has done this before help. In all fairness, the Apple products set themselves up once they "found" the printer. Air printing is flawless from all the devices. We'll see how long the happiness continues, but for now I guess I've drunk the Brother Koolaid.
Great printer w/CD, DVD printing
March 14, 2015
Been using an HP wireless AIO for several years. Did a decent job of printing both text and graphics, but just didn't like staying on the network. (HP J4680, just in case you're wondering - and I have 3 of them on various networks with similar problems). Plus I've grown to HATE the HP driver suite. So when I was in the market for a new unit, other than NOT being HP, my only requirement was that it could directly print to CD/DVD media. This Brother is a DREAM. Prints at least as well as the HP, seems the ink is cheaper (marginally) and it seems to last better than the HP. Network setup is quick, easy and effective - printer shows up on the network and STAYS on the network. Also, Brother has (free) apps for not only ios and android, but even windows phone 8.1 - you know, the phone OS NOBODY uses (except me...)Operationally this unit shines (literally) - the control panel is beautifully illuminated, unlike the HP, and the scanning is easily 5x faster, at least. Through in the NFC printing capability (not from my Lumia 920, sorry to say) and a very competitive price, not to mention that CD/DVD capability, and this printer is a winner in my book. Highly recommended, in case you didn't get that from the review <g>
Works Great with Yosemite! (Mac OS X 10.10.2)
February 21, 2015
I've had an ink-guzzling HP printer for a decade, and got tired of buying an expensive cartridge every ~60 pages printed. After lots of research on continuous ink supply systems in foreign markets, I decided to save myself $150 and buy this printer instead. I'm guessing I'll save myself close to $150 on cartridges a year compared to my HP using the LC103BK XL cartridges Brother makes. From what I've read and heard, I wouldn't bother refilling the cartridges or getting off-brands for this printer.I was hesitant to get this printer initially because several reviewers said it was a pain to set up with Yosemite. I found it to be very easy.I followed the instructions until step #14 when it asked for connection type. I then went to:http://support.brother.com/g/b/producttop.aspx?c=us&lang=en&prod=mfcj870dw_us_eu_asI selected "downloads", then "OSX 10.10, search", then "printer driver", then "download".After installing the driver I unplugged my Apple Airport (wireless router) for ~10 seconds, and rebooted my Mac (probably not necessary). I then used the touchscreen on the printer to select my network and enter my password. As soon as this was done I was able to print wirelessly from my macbook and iPad. The quality on "normal" is marginal, but acceptable for most print jobs. Switching to "best" greatly improves the print quality, but increases the print time from ~5 seconds to ~30 seconds per page.I almost never write reviews, but I thought this might help someone who also has a new Mac with the initial set up. It's easy!
There is virtually no warm-up for it like there was with my previous HP All-In-One
October 31, 2014
The scanner (and copier) is fast and works well on this thing. There is virtually no warm-up for it like there was with my previous HP All-In-One. The feeder works great. I've had no network problems either. (you have to have your computer on folks and connected to the network for the scanner to know where to send it)It's not the fastest printer (and I mean the printing side of the All-In-One) but that is probably my settings I have input. I'm sure I could make it faster with different settings but why print so much anyway? Save it on your computer! The more you print with any printer the more it's going to cost you in paper and ink. Printing photos is never going to produce the best image. Upload files to your favorite place and have a few sent out for a buck or two. It's better quality and you save ink and expensive photo paper. Also, I don't see many reviews mentioning the app you can get and scan or print right from your phone using NFC. It can be hit and miss but there are a lot of things that could be including whether you have your phone set up right. It does work though.I've had this All-In-One for 11 months now without any problems.
the easiest printer I've ever setup
September 13, 2013
everything was so easy to setup and use!PROS:1) very nice touchscreen2) color print quality is excellent3) Black, test printing is very good4) easy wireless setup, no connect this, do that, type this, just no plug and play, well this is the power :)5) incredible value 89$Cons:1) small paper trays2) i am just picking nits here fax default is set to print on error, not confirm, see I told you it was minor, but you can change that
I am switching to Brother printers
August 22, 2013
My first printer for my Mac was my old HP which served me for years. It sort-of worked. HP told me they no longer support the Mac drivers. I told them I was switching to Epson. The Epson printer gave me nothing but problems. I was always un-installing, then re-installing the USB drivers. I switched back to HP.My last HP printer used a black cartridge and tri-color cartridge with built-in print heads, the 74X and 75X. It had a few quirks but was usable for a good service life. Now I searched for a replacement. HP no longer uses the 74X/75X and have switched to individual color cartridges. Ok, sounds good - just replace the color which runs dry to save money. But, reviews have been dismal about ink usage and unforgiving firmware which forces the user to purchase unnecessary new ink cartridges.I have been looking for months at the new HP's, Canon, and Epson for a network printer which can FAX aka "all-in-one." I came up empty. None of these major brands produce a printer with good reviews. I'm reading about poor customer service, DOA printers, horrible ink usage, and cranky firmware.I never thought that Brother would have what I needed. I use and abuse their label maker (tip: it's much easier printing address labels than trying to feed envelopes through a printer!) This printer is amazing. Within half an hour, I had it faxing, scanning, copying, and printing. It has all kinds of little features which make life easier, such as the ability to preview a multi-page FAX before dialing and printing a confirmation page for a successful FAX. With my HP, I needed to watch the display for a confirmation. It's far quieter than my HP. It picked up an incoming FAX and I didn't even know. The touchscreen panel swivels (wow factor). The ADF folds out of the way so it's nearly half the height. As someone else mentioned, the connectors for the network, USB, and phone are inside the printer - a little weird, but more of a cord organizer to keep your desk neat. Didn't see it as an issue.Installing on a Mac was very easy... once I found the drivers, which were not on the CD. The installation experience was unpleasant. Mac owners should not worry, but note you must download the CUPS printer driver from the Brother website which is easy to find. Grab the Twain interface, too - it's amazing. I usually skip Twain since it's so much problem on a PC, but on the Mac it seems flawless.Don't bother with the included driver CD. For Mac, it's useless. It kept insisting that I go through a guided wireless installation and did not install any of the drivers I needed. If you're the type of person who likes to spend their weekends fighting with computers, by all means embrace wireless printing. I gave up years ago. I don't install USB printers or wireless printers, never again. I always run an Ethernet cable directly to my router and set a static IP address. Trust me. Macs don't like USB devices which can be turned on and off when they're trying to sleep (may cause a kernel panic). And, if you've got VMware, sharing a network printer between three operating systems is infinitely easier than switching USB devices. Google bonjour for windows and CUPS. yea, it's a painful learning process, but you only have to do it once.Even more unpleasant was finding the CD label program which is supposed to be bundled with the printer. I haven't found it yet. It's not easy to find on Brother's website, but it's mentioned in the manual. Google found it for me. I ran it - wow, really powerful CD/DVD printing program for inkjet printable media. I usually just use a Sharpie marker. If I find anything else worthy of mention, I'll update my review. But, I am almost ready to chuck my HP printer for good and switching to Brother. I just wish they'd make the Mac installation procedure a bit more friendly.

Fantastic Upgrade
March 31, 2016
This has been a gigantic step up from my Epson Workforce printer, granted, this cost a bit more as well. I have had 0 issues with it thus far, including doing two sided printing and even copying from multiple one sided documents into two sided documents, which is an awesome feature. The ink seems to last a long time as well. My wife and I homeschool our 6 kids, run a small home based business, and print things for various church functions that we participate in, and so far we haven't even run out of the ink provided in the printer box. It is also much faster than what I am used to. It actually spits out sheets about as fast as the huge printer copiers that my office spends thousands on.Set up was not as straight forward as I am used to. I usually manually enter all my network information and then devices talk to one another. This HP printer accepted my manual inputs, but still demanded a WPS key, even though I wasn't using WPS to connect to the router. It has been absolutely trouble free since then. Hit print (including from my phones and tablets) and it prints.Once your printer is on the network, head to HP's site and download their utility and it will set up your computer for you. This was simple but has to be done on every PC. Phones just need an app downloaded from your perspective appstore.

August 5, 2015
Good printer. Have one at home and bought a second printer, same model, and took it out of the country where the power is 50 cycles and 210-240 volts. No transformers or any type of conversions needed when I used the printer overseas. Printer works well in the U.S.A and overseas. All features --scan, copy, print (wireless), work. I did not set up the fax as there no phone line where I was; however, when setting up the printer there was an option to set up the fax, but I selected to "skip" that step. Loaded printer's CD in both iMac and HP laptops and they worked wirelessly with the printer.Very good packing. Printer was in a box and that box was in another sturdier box. Took about three to four weeks for the printer to arrive via ocean vessel. There was no damage to the printer.
Good Solid Printer
April 3, 2015
Received the printer quickly after it had been shipped. Easily assembled printer without reading any instructions. Turned it on and connected to usb and later wirelessly through the Printer itself and not the software that I downloaded from HP.com. As soon as it connected I upgraded the firmware using a USB Flash with the new firmware. Everything went smoothly without any problems. I am able to print CD/DVD labels which are thicker than regular paper without any of the problems mentioned in other reviews. The LCD is large and nice to look at. The screen works the same as a Cellphone screen. By swiping to one side moves the screen to a different part. Once the inks depletes, I am planning on buying a Refill kit made specially for this printer's cartridges. The ink this printer uses is a special pigmented ink that wouldn't clot the printhead. Once I start using it more will update this short review with a better review. But so far, It's worth the five stars.Update: July, 2017 So far printer has been working like a charm. I don't print very often, but when i do, the prints come out looking great. The only CON about this printer is the very expensive Ink cartridges. Be prepared to spend over $100.00 to replace all four cartridges (Bought mine at HP.com, to be on the safe side). What I did was purchase four new ink cartridges and installed them as the printer's original half empty cartridges were used up. I then refilled the Printer's original Ink cartridges with new pigmented ink completely full. Once the second batch of Ink cartridges run out, I will reinstall the newly filled original ink cartridges. If it screws up my printer or it doesn't work, I will immediately update this review to warn others.
Lots of chit chat on how good this printer is
October 8, 2014
Lots of chit chat on how good this printer is. Well I am coming from its brother the 8600 which is flat out a great printer pound for pound. However this 8620 is an update to the 8600; same features but updated hardware. For example the touch screen is large and works. This is an issue with many printers but I can say this printer reads my big hands. The 8620 is not the end all of printers. But it does setup quickly, it stays connected to your wifi. You can scan to you IPAD or PC to save documents in the cloud. The 8620 is quicker than the 8600 and prints in vivid colors. Its a good all-in-one printer. You should buy if you need a High Mid Range printer.
Good all around printer.

I had to replace my old HP inkjet printer after 7 years of regular household use. This one has been a good choice after about 2 months of use. It feeds well and takes checks and smaller envelopes fine. Print is exact and doesn't smudge. I'm still on my initial trial cartridges that came with the printer after about 200 pages of printing so I don't know how long the cartridges last. Scanning is very good and clear. I do not have the fax function attached so don't know how this works. Anyway, I found this device to be a good printer for everyday stuff. the print is clear and dark. Color printing on HP Heavy glossy photo paper (the only kind I use for photos) is excellent. Speed is also fast. Note that this printer is pretty quiet also. I have a HP Color LaserJet 2820 at my office that makes WAY too much noise and comes on and off at all hours and randomly when not printing to cycle through some sort of initiation process. The present unit is much better.
A Lot of Research Done Before My Purchase
June 20, 2014
Any time I make a big purchase, there is a lot of research involved. I looked at printers ranging from Epson to Canon. During my research I also read the reviews on Amazon about this printer. Even with one person giving it 1 star, I made the purchase anyway and I must say, I am glad that I did! It works wonderfully. It prints fast and the scanned documents looks better than any scan documents I've ever seen. I can scan documents, images, etc... from my phone. I can also access Dropbox or other cloud sites from my phone and print anything in there. The printer also comes with an email address that you can customize. You send emails, photos, or documents to that email address and it will automatically print them for you and they will be waiting for you when you get home. I love that!Scanning was the main reason for the purchase, but I got a lot more than I expected. I cannot tell you anything about the faxing feature. I have not nor will I use it in the near future. I will admit, the printer is bigger than I thought, but I can live with that. Oh and as for the person who gave it "one star", I believe that is a "troll" post, which is used to upset or deter people from purchasing this. Not to mention, if all of those things happened (which I find VERY hard to believe), there were much bigger issues than the printer! If you are looking for a printer, this is the one to have!**Edited on Aug 21, 2014**I still love the printer very much, but the purpose of this edit is to comment on the other three people who gave it a 1 Star rating. The one written on July 23, 2014 by Kenneth J. Flanagan leaves me clueless. He says the printer craps out, but that tells me absolutely nothing. I also don't understand his comment regarding the LED. When it goes to sleep, I just leaves a small little light on to let you know that it is still operable and in sleep mode. There is no validity to his review. I think this is another troll post. Not to mention, this is the only review that he's written on Amazon. The post written on August 19, 2014 by Sue E Lucas makes no sense to me. She is another who only wrote one review and I feel this is also a troll post. She contradicts herself. She claims to have been a HP customer for many years, but in the next paragraph, she says she was cautious in making the purchase. I could be wrong, but I cannot see a person in customer service, from a reputable company, tell a customer that she sounds like a whinny woman. Then she went on to say the representative said, "you sound like the kind of guy that would complain if your neighbor cut his grass and cut a little of yours." I have dealt with their customer service and I don't believe this happened. Not to mention, the calls are recorded. This is another review with no validity. The last review that I am going to comment on is the one written on August 13, 2014 by James Hochstadt. He is not afraid to give a five star review as he did with another item. His review may have some validity to it, but I cannot verify this claim because I do not use the heavy paper. I have read something similar before. He mentioned that was why they had a class action lawsuit. The only class action lawsuit that I have seen was regarding an issue with the printer staying connected via WiFi. I have not had this problem. It could be that they updated the software, which is done regularly.I hope this additional information was helpful.

I like this printer
May 11, 2015
It has so many needed features for a low price. The print quality is not 100% but I at least give it 90% on regular paper and 75% on photo paper. One issue is that I used the ink that came with the printer and did not even go through a whole pack of 500 sheets of paper before having to purchase more ink. I purchased generic ink which works just as well as the Brother ink. So far I have used less than half a pack of paper with the generic ink and the ink levels are above half. I will see how much paper the generic ink takes me through.
Good value and features, just so-so print quality and flimsy construction.
March 5, 2015
For the money I can't complain. I've used many inkjets from all of the major suppliers and some fringe players. Brother is positioned as a value brand with lots of features for a comparatively small price.Pros:-Excellent print cost and uses same cartridges as numerous other Brother models making them economical and easy to find.-Easy to access print cartridges.-Excellent disk print capability with surprisingly good results.-Compact form-factor and good ergonomics with intuitive interface on user panel.-Paired right away via wireless, although noticeably slower than direct connection.-Wireless printing from ipad, Windows laptop both work well. Installation was smooth.Cons:-Just average print quality. Ok in normal setting, not good, colors under saturated and not real sharp resolution in photo setting.- Average to above average print speed once printing ensues.-Requires frequent head cleaning.-Software is a mess, some features accessible in control center 4, some in separate executable, some in print driver, some such as CD printing (separte install from disc - not available on website) )and print quality maintenance (only available through printer panel) not available in any of these. Brother needs to hire a useability expert as they are way behind HP/Epson.-Tray for inserting CDs is flimsy so never sure it is in there correctly. Need to make sure to snap all the way back after disc removal. Seems like there should be a visual indicator with a positive index point to let user know when DVD/CD is correctly positioned for print.-Flimsy construction - this is somewhat subjective, but compared to every HP I've used, including some really cheap ones, the Brother's construction is comprised of thin, lightweight plastics that seem to be of inferior quality. Time will tell if this is a real issue, but not confidence inspiring. If I had to do it over, I would stick
Found how to install on Windows 7 - 64 bit.
February 18, 2015
Ok, I finally found a solution to this issue. Using the complete install that came with the printer and the full install downloaded from the brother site, I kept getting the error:iso26-MoveFileData-13.This is what worked for me. I uninstalled the brother drivers, there is an uninstall package on the brother site. I rebooted. I looked at device manager under Imaging and uninstalled all old printer drivers and make sure you check the delete software check box. I turned off any other wireless printers that were not the brother printer. I went under settings on the brother printer to the wifi section and wrote down the ip address. you do not include the leading zeros when you use it later.I went back to the brother site here:http://support.brother.com/g/b/downloadlist.aspx?c=us&lang=en&prod=mfcj870dw_us_eu_as&os=93and downloaded the add printer wizard driver and placed it in a separate newly created folder where it would be easy to locate.I then went to devices and printers and clicked add a printer. The selected the network, wireless, bluetooth printer.(next)Then I selected my printer was not listed which is down at the bottom of the screen(next)Then I selected the add a printer using tcp/ip(next)Then I selected the dropdown (tcp/Ip)..do not select autodetect,Enter the tcp/ip address in the second box, do not check query the printer automatically(next)Then windows will located the printer, you need then to browse to the directory when you downloaded the drivers and select the file called BRPRI13A.inf.It then will ask you to select a printer, at this time locate your printer in this list MFC-J870DW.Once it selected and next is clicked it should install correctly and it will ask you to print a test page.I hope this helps.
trade-offs to the HP all in ones - also ink cartridge tips
October 19, 2014
I've had this printer for over a month now and have mixed feelings about this machine. I've owned several HP inkjet printers and I've had only one short-lived Epson. My review on this Brother model will be based on having owned another printer brand.Pros: Quiet (much quieter than HPs), auto double-sided-printing, very long-lasting ink cartridges, scanning/auto document feeding/copying features all work well.Cons: Cleans cartridges during idle, paper tray must be removed and cover lifted to refill paper, much slower print speed than HP machines even in "Fast" mode, colors less vivid producing low quality photo prints. The Nuance PaperPort software bundled with the Brother driver has a fast, reasonably accurate OCR but the PaperPort application slowed down my i3 Win7 computer and would crash Windows Explorer. I uninstalled PaperPort and now use the Microsoft Office Document Imaging OCR utility when scanning documents or pages from books. This workaround requires a couple extra steps but at least my computer is no longer sluggish. My two main peeves are the inconvenient paper tray (I tried removing the cover to the paper tray but that disables the ability for auto double-sided printing) and the poor quality color output for photo prints. The color is fine for regular printing but unacceptable if I want nice photos done. I've tried fiddling with the settings but could not get the quality I wanted (HP color prints are much better). I may have to buy a separate true photo printer just for that function.I cannot complain too much for the $109.00 price. There are many useful features packed into this one machine. The Brother ink refills are considerably cheaper than the HP cartridges and this may be the reason for the biggest trade-off between the two printer brands - ink price versus color output quality.UPDATE 11/5/2014: I changed the rating from 3 stars to 4 because I find the scanning function excellent on this machine..scans much faster than my old HP with good resulting images (pdf or jpg). Also, I'm still using the original color ink cartridges that came with the printer (on moderate to high usage in Normal print mode).UPDATE #2 3/4/2016: Just had one of the ink ports clog on me; the magenta would no longer print even with a new OEM cartridge. Printer cleaning cycles would not resolve it. The clog occurred in the lower needle-like ink port on the machine (youtube videos helped me figure out where the problem might be). I used a Q-tip dipped in hot water to swab the lower pin nozzle, and followed that up with Isopropyl alcohol Q-tip swabbing. Next, via the printer machine menu, I selected "Cleaning" to clean the print heads. The red ink started to flow again.Several customers mentioned they were unable to print at all when one of the ink cartridges registers empty. I use this workaround: COVER the plastic see-through ink window of the cartridge with electrical tape or blue painter's masking tape. I think there's an optical beam that monitors ink levels in each cartridge. Covering the plastic window allows me to use the remaining ink in the cartridge.BEWARE -- running the ink cartridges past empty will cause the print nozzles to clog with dried ink. I recommend replacing the cartridges before they become totally empty.
Excellent bang for the Buck
December 3, 2013
It was going to cost me $150 to replace the drum cartridge in my 50 lb.+, Dell color laser printer, so I thought I would give inkjet printers another try. My last inkjet was 5 years ago and I was disgusted with excessive ink consumption, slow, noisy printing, frequent clogging, etc., etc. A friend assured me that the newer inkjets are much improved. After reading a number of reviews I settled on the Brother MFC870DW. I have been using the printer for 3 months with moderate to heavy usage. Overall I am very pleased. Installation was relatively quick and easy. I have the printer hardwired into my router in the office. The printer software is installed on 2 notebooks that are wireless connected to the network. Pros: Excellent price, excellent driver software making it easy to configure a myriad of features, easy to understand and use touch screen control pad, Ink-saver setting, double sided printing, easy to replace ink cartridges, printer status monitor, small, light footprint, fairly quiet, and ink consumption does not seem excessive. Yes, the factory installed cartridges ran out after a few weeks, but the extended play XL cartridges are lasting much better. Cons: a little slow compared to my laser. On the other hand, it doesn't require a 30 second warm up after a period on non-use. I have the option of using a Fast print option, but don't really feel the need. Printer materials are light weight plastic, so not real rugged. Finally, I would have liked a larger paper tray.As I mentioned above, the driver software is excellent. The feature that impressed me the most was the ability to leave my notebook in the living room, go into office and scan a document. The printer’s display then asks me where to send the scanned image (both of my laptops are displayed). When I go back to the living room, my notebook has opened my document, and ready for me to process it. I would definitely buy again.
EXCELLENT MULTI-FUNCTION INK JET
September 14, 2013
After 30 years of printers, this is the best I have owned. Previous have been HP and Panasonic. Ink cost finally did become a factor with the HP printers. This printer spools faster than HP and the touch screen is a plus. The ink is loaded in the front so the shelf above it was not a factor. I would give this 5 stars except that 1.) the paper tray must be removed to load it and 2.) ink cartridges are not as readily available as HP and easy to mistake the correct cartridges. Even Amazon has identified the wrong stock number. The correct cartridge # is LC101 (standard cartridge) or LC103 (high yield cartridge)I strongly recommend this printer

I'm almost in love with this multi-tasking behemoth.
December 17, 2015
I haven't had a good solid scanner/printer in years but I wanted to get one to address my over-flowing loose paper needs. I decided it was time to look into a combo device that could accomplish the following things in order of IMPORTANCE:1) Have an Auto Document Feeder (ADF) that can enable scanning of lots of documents rapidly at a time (at least 25-page ADF)2) Duplex functionality mainly for scanning, less so for copying/printing3) Scan and print wirelessly. So you can see here the key word here is SCAN because I want to reduce the amount of papers I have lying around and start transitioning over to digital filing. In any case, I examined many products that seemed to fit this criteria but ultimately settled on the HP OfficeJet 8620. It was the only one that seemed to address the above needs without any obvious deficiencies in any of those functions. More importantly, the description of this product seemed to me to be the most clear about its duplex functionality. I also owned HP printers and scanners in the past and don't have any serious issues with the quality of HP products unlike some people. And in comparing it to the Canon MF229dw, the 8620 seemed to have fewer issues with wireless printing and was easier to set-up, which was also important to me. So this seemed to be the obvious pick for me.Overall I'm super pleased with this machine. I don't mind the size, I love it actually. The set-up was fantastic, I love the little animated videos that show you how and where to install paper and ink. By the way, the display screen on this thing is awesome, colorful and clear, and again has that user-friendly HP touch that I appreciate so much. Setting up the machine for wireless functionality is a breeze and makes total sense. Just connect it to your wifi network and you are good to go, or you can set it up for a wired connection and have your computers and mobile devices connect to it that way. The menu navigation and options, all of it is just top quality and easy to use. I love the look and feel of this thing. But how does the quality of the scanning and printing stack up? That's what I'm all about. Unfortunately, this is where I start seeing some blemishes. If we are talking standard printing options, like File > Print, then printing is super fast and pretty near flawless as long as you keep it one-sided. The colors are bold and the text is sharp and easy to read. However, scanning and copying through the ADF and taking advantage of duplex functions is a little disappointing. The ADF sometimes sucks in more than one page at a time; I've already witnessed several paper jams because of this, although the more I use it though the more I think it's improving. Still, it's pretty jarring to see that happen with a brand new shiny device within moments of setting it up. Additionally, the duplex function is OKAY, it's not bad, but it's not great either and has jammed up several times too. Still though, I love that I have it and will save tons of time scanning all my stacks of paper. My biggest gripe with the ADF is that the paper does not go into the ADF feeder straight. As such, scans and copies are slightly tilted and display a clear diagonal black line at the bottom of every page indicating that the page was crooked when it went into the machine. Happens every time. Do some research on this issue and you will quickly realize that HPs suffer from this ADF problem quite a bit. HP tech support does recommend cleaning the ADF roller to sort out the issue but it's a brand new machine for crying out loud! I shouldn't have to clean it, and because I see similar complaints about this very issue from other consumers, I suspect that this is a persistent problem with HP's line of printer copier scanners. This is not necessarily a big deal breaker for me though; because I'm only scanning mainly to keep backups of things, I don't mind this tilt too much or the black line showing up at the bottom of the page. If I really need to scan or copy something very important then I will just resort to the flatbed scanner on top of the machine which works just fine. But if you are a big-time office professional that relies on producing near-perfect scans at reasonable speeds then the ADF in this product might disappoint you. You have been notified in advanced. With some adjustments though, I have been able to mitigate a lot of these issues, and when it's running smoothly, the 8260 is a pretty fantastic machine worthy of 4 stars. Stick to using thin paper and the paper jams through the ADF should go down. Also, fan out the papers a bit to ensure that they are not sticking too much to each other. This should also prevent the ADF from pulling in more than one page at a time. Once you manage to get it running smoothly then the 8260 is perfect for accomplishing many basic office tasks.
Only regret is that it does not have a rear paper feed for checks or I would give it five stars
April 22, 2015
After three replacements in as many months with the last printer (which I threw in the dumpster in frustration) I swore I would never buy another HP product, but after seeing the reviews and how well the printer does with ink I decided to give them a try again after five years.I am glad I did, this is a great machine, only regret is that it does not have a rear paper feed for checks or I would give it five stars, so you have to put them in the paper tray in reverse order, or download a different driver than comes with it to get it to work with pre-numbered checks. This is the only downside at this point.I will see how well it does with third party refilled cartridges, from all I read it should be fine.
Connectd to anything
April 2, 2015
I had tried other wireless printers to use with my phone, Kindle and Chromebook, but they just wouldn't work reliably. This one works. There is a remote control app for this printer for Android phones that a supports printing and scanning. They also set up an email for every printer they sell. You send an email to the printer and it prints. It works for any device that can send an email. Having tried the competition (Canon), I can't over emphasize how much better the connectivity of this printer is.The negatives - it doesn't have a manual feed tray, and the whole paper feed system seems a little iffy. It jammed a page or two for me with 20 pound US letter, so I imagine it could have problems with heavier paper. The photo quality is not first rate either, but it's fine for office color. The FAX works and the document feeder works smoothly, but the transmission speed is SLOW. It's fine for a page or two, but if you need to send 20 pages look for something else. The setup and diagnostic tools are also way above the Canons Epson and Brothers I've seen in this price range. You can set up the functions from the control panel and makes the correct sethings based on your input, configures the printer, runs a logical diagnostic series and prints a hardcopy report. I can't tell you how long it's been since I've seen such a nice system in this area.In summary, it's a good unit for light office work if you only use regular 8 1/2x11 paper. It's especially good for connecting to phones, tablets and other devices that have trouble printing. I love the HP supporting software and diagnostics. I just wish the printer itself was better.
Had some technical obstacles in the beginning but a partiall reset solved them and it's been pretty solid since
December 1, 2014
So far, it works well. I chose to wait on Amazon and get this one instead of a similarly-numbered model from a local warehouse club since there was a significant price difference (even with the instant savings promotion).I have used it via USB and Wireless and love the fact that Windows 8.1 was able to pick it up off the network and add it to the devices & printers area without a single click. I haven't tried the "full function" driver software yet because my past experience with HP's full-featured software has always been rather frustrating to mildly disappointing at best. I will try using it in a sandbox environment before subjecting the family to it to make sure I don't have to spend any more time being the family IT guy than I want to.I also use it with an app called VueScan on both desktop and mobile/tablet platforms (highly recommended) and it plays well with them. Scanning is very fast, compared to the L7590 I replaced with this 8620.Update: I am not sure why but it tends to act up when it's been powered on for longer than a day or so. Attempts to power off just result in the screen showing the message "shutting down" and nothing else goes on until I pull the plug. It will do things like begin to make a copy when requested but not actually print anything on the paper it just fed in, say "reading files" for an indefinite amount of time when I insert the USB stick I use with it, and just fall off the network for no apparent reason. I'm pretty sure it's some sort of firmware issue but there are no updates for it. I'm not saying I want to send it back, I just want it to be stable.2nd Update: It started locking up like a cheap PC. Tried resetting defaults to set it up from scratch and guess what... The wireless settings were cleared like they were supposed to but when I went in to set it back up, I got a message of the feature being locked out by the administrator. What??? locked out after a factory reset? So I connected it via its LAN port and tried to reset it again and again to no avail. Then I tried to unblock the blocked features and I get "Invalid input" with a red circled X icon. I was thinking at the time, "What a piece of garbage. I wish I would have bought from a B&M so I could lug it back and get my money back but now I am stuck with it. Avoid this piece of trash. Zero stars and infinite frustration!"3rd (overdue) Update: I eventually got in touch with HP support and they instructed me to perform a partial reset via the service menu (from the home screen, touch the cancel button - it won't be illuminated; touch it four times in a row anyway). Once the printer was reset, I was able to fix my connection and configuration issues. Since then, it's been pretty rock-solid. My only gripe at this point is that it sporadically complains about the print heads, requiring a power-cycle operation to clear the message. For the money (and I've seen it off and on for under $100), you can't go wrong with this printer. I scan and copy a lot with it and the document feeder rarely 'eats' the originals like my old L7590 used to. Print quality is par excellence and photos look good to boot. I've printed on 8x10 and 4x6 photo paper and it will print edge-to-edge with ease, both from PC and via USB stick. I'm looking forward to holding on to this guy for the next five or so years (one down, four to go) before getting a replacement. Hopefully it holds up like its predecessor.
Love/Hate

Edit: Updated to 4 stars after I discovered (unlike what I originally wrote below) there IS a 64-bit WIA scanner driver included, even tho there is no 64-bit TWAIN driver currently. WIA is Microsoft's answer to TWAIN. The app I use most often (Paint Shop Pro X6) for some reason accesses WIA devices in a separate menu item than TWAIN devices, so I missed that at first. I've now confirmed that my 8620 does have a 64-bit WIA driver installed and I can access the scan app natively through my 64 bit image editing application (Paint Shop Pro X6-64).I also printed a drop dead gorgeous blowup to 8.5 x 11 of a 4 x 6 twenty year old photo print on HP photo paper this morning on the first try. . .that improved my mood a bit too. :)++++On day three, I'm feeling very conflicted about this all-in-one.It's replacing a Canon Pixma MP830, which I purchased in 2007, but was initially released in 2004. So this new HP, just announced in March of 2014, has a 10 year technology advancement advantage. In some places it shows it, in others it doesn't.Wireless networking is certainly much better than my old Pixma. The printer is available from all my wireless network devices. The scanner is available from networked PCs, which is nice (early networked all-in-ones would sometimes let you use the printer, but not the scanner, across the network).I've successfully used Apple Airprint (a newish I-Pad Air) and HP ePrint from an Android device (HTC One M8 smartphone). HP ePrint took some playing with to get it do something reasonable, which is fill the page with the photo. I did eventually discover the settings to get it do that, which had to do with it deciding by default I probably had 4x6" photo paper loaded in the printer. Umm, what? Anyway, once set to letter size plain paper it did a reasonable job. Two laptops with Windows 7 64 bit have also been successfully printed from and seem to have full functionality across the wireless network without having to have a "controlling" PC attached to the printer by USB.So that's all good, tho it took a bit to get it there.I had tremendous jamming problems, and inexplicable (still) "paper size mismatch" errors today. The latter occurred after printing a test image from the printers own "test reports" section and then trying to use that same piece of paper as the input in the ADF to do a copy. Get that, the same piece of paper the printer already printed was suddenly not the same size as the paper in the tray it came from when I wanted to make a copy. I'm not entirely sure what fixed that, maybe just fooling with the blue sizing guides in the paper tray.On the jamming, I must have had the duplexer thing on the back off the unit and back on at least 15 times today as paper kept getting jammed between there and the print head, apparently on the way out of the duplexer. I *think* what finally fixed that was changing the paper type in the defaults. This printer seems to be very sensitive to having the just right paper type selected in the print options or BAD things happen. At least that's my analysis so far. At one point this morning I was extremely close to swearing a mighty oath of eternal damnation on all HP printers forever more. . . but then I changed the paper type and all suddenly seemed well. We'll see if that fix keeps things working or not.The borderless printing doesn't always work to be 100% borderless, but it's still pretty impressive, and sometimes downright stellar. My wife was very impressed with one printout of a picture I showed her that was genuinely edge to edge and beautiful.Another significant disappointment for a 2014 printer, is I've discovered there are no native 64bit TWAIN scanner drivers (nor WIA, a competing Microsoft scanner driver standard). For 2014, this is really unacceptable. TWAIN 2.0 was the first to support native 64 bit drivers, and that was released in 2008. Now here we are 6 years later, and a brand new HP SOHO all-in-one lineup STILL doesn't have native 64 bit TWAIN drivers? This fact is more annoyance than show-stopper, however. The TWAIN 1.9 32 bit drivers that HP supplies are compatible with 64 bit OS like Windows 7 and higher. Where it gets to be annoying is if you have (like I do) 64 bit applications like newer versions of Photoshop or PaintShop Pro. . . the 64 bit versions of those applications will not see a scanner installed when you want to scan from them. Instead you'll have to rely on workarounds, either scanning from HP's app directly, and saving the resulting image, and then using your 64 bit image editing app. . .or you'll have to use the 32 bit versions of those apps. As I said, not a show-stopper, but given there are an increasing number of 64 bit native image editing applications now available, and it has been 6 years since TWAIN made the 2.0 spec available to write 64 bit native scanner drivers, this really shouldn't be where we are today with a high-end SOHO all-in-one like the HP's 86xx lineup. C'mon HP, get with it already! We want native 64 bit scanner drivers! All in all, after three days, I'm very conflicted about this HP 8620. I see some stuff I like a lot, but the problems so far have been not inconsiderable and I'm not at all sure they are finished (particularly the jamming). And the lack of 64 bit scanner drivers is very annoying at this late date for a high-end SOHO all-in-one. This isn't a $75 cheapie, this is HP's brand new lineup, and even if I paid $225 for it here at Amazon it was released to hit the $299 price point just a few months ago. We have every right to expect a *premium* experience with this all-in-one, and right now I'm not getting that "premium" feeling.
Excellent all-in-one printer/scanner/copier/fax with minor issues.
August 9, 2014
I'm a fan of HP printers. I've owned several over the years, using them in a real estate business for everything from flyers to legal documents. In each case the printers outlasted the other electronics (computers, cameras, etc.) purchased and used at the same time. I had very high hopes for this all-in-one based on stellar reviews. I've had mine now for only a short time but I'm already seeing the limitations of this generally very functional office printer.I usually write long reviews, but here I'll try to be brief and hit the pros and cons of HP's 8620.OVERALL; it's a more than capable printer and I'm happy enough with my purchase to keep it. Part of my decision to keep it, rather than opt for a competing product like the Epson WorkForce 3640, is that I've decided to go with long-term reliability over a more sensational print quality or lower price - the latter two (higher quality printing and lower purchase price) I associate with the Epson. I almost pulled the trigger on the Epson 3640 as it seems to address the weaknesses of the HP 8620, but I opted for the HP due to Epson's know issues with wasting expensive ink cartridges and frequent printer head clogs. The HP was nearly twice the price of the Epson ($225 vs $125) - yet I was worried that long-term cost of Epson ink would quickly offset Epson's lower purchase price.PROS:Functionality is high on this HP printer! The wireless printing has been flawless. Both remote e-printing and wireless printing from my Sony laptop, Asus tablet and Samsung Note 3 smartphone have been excellent. The same applies to scanning and copying. I haven't used it as a fax, but it appears from the 3.5 LCD and printing prompts that printing can be done as an efax... So again, funtionality as an all-in-one could not be better.Cost and reliability of ink and print mechanisms is also very good - maybe even excellent. When comparing ink cartridge pricing with Epson, the cost per page were anecdotally about half the cost! Then given HP's high reviews on ink replacement and general printer reliability, I had to go with HP over Epson. So, low print cost and reliability = win for HP. Clogging and frequent refilling of ink = fail for Epson (even though Epson's overall print quality is superior).Print, scan and copy speeds are also very good. Excluding wireless printing from tablets and smartphones (which both print quite slowly), the standard print, copy, scan functions are fast!Print quality is where the tide starts to turn somewhat. I've had other HP printers in the past that used older technology (I assume) but printed more eye-popping color. The overall quality is good, especially with text. But the quality of photos and graphics is okay, and honestly, I was hoping for better. So, print quality of the HP is a mixed bag of mostly good, but not great.CONS:Print quality is only good. That may seem unfair to list this as a "con." But in fairness, print quality is such a key feature of printer ratings that "good" is just okay. Again, I've decided to trade great (Epson) for good (HP) due to other considerations already mentioned. And while totally acceptable, I was a little disappointed that the quality of the HP 8620 printing wasn't "great" based on many of the reviews I read.Another negative, and frankly a disappointment, is that HP has opted for a type of dedicated paper tray that doesn't allow for manual feeding (at least not easily) of different print stocks. So, if you want to switch to photo paper, cardstock or envelopes, you have to clunkily remove the entire paper tray and paper, then replace them with whatever stock you plan on trying to print on. This is just impractical for an all-in-one that's supposed to cater to small to moderate sized business. The Epson WorkForce by comparison allows you to feed different media/stock through a bypass tray. I almost returned the HP 8620 for this reason alone.A very minor and final negative of the HP 8620 is that it is BIG. It just seems like HP could have either trimmed down the footprint/size, or at least easily added a bypass tray, because of the size of this thing! When you open the front panel there is room to spare - so it just makes this printer seem unnecessarily large. That said, it does fit on the same desk as my laptop with external keyboard, additional monitors and stereo speakers. So while not a deal-breaker by any means, the larger size ends up being just a minor negative.MY CONCLUSION; is that the biggest weakness of this HP is the graphic and photo print quality. The quality is not bad, and you could even say it's good. It's just not great - which I wish it was. But I'm unwilling to deal with Epson's known print head clogging issues and need to constantly be replacing ink cartridges.HP is a very solid choice for overall performance and functionality. I'll be back with an update after a few months of use to see if any of my initial thoughts have changed.

(Connectivity) Decent printer, BUT...
October 24, 2015
...had to overcome a serious issue which took weeks to resolve. Initially, I could print, but after a (very short) period of time, I could no longer connect to the printer. The printer itself thought it was still "online" (connected wirelessly), but I could not connect to it (from Mac or PC) until I rebooted it. Then I could connect again for a short period of time until it was unable to be connected to once again. After weeks of going back & forth with tech support, I finally got a phone call schedule. Of course their initial "tips" via email were not helpful and were all things I had already tried, but once I got a tech support person on the phone (US-based, thank you), we solved the issue in minutes. She said they have dealt with many, many calls on the same issue and know the resolution by heart. The issue? Regardless of the fact that the specs above state it is compatible with 802.11n, IT IS NOT. If you have a router that broadcasts in a/b/g/n, the printer will initially connect to B but will prefer/switch to the N (5Ghz) on its own shortly, even though it is unable to communicate at this frequency. I had to split my router's broadcast into two separate networks, B and N, name them differently, and connect the printer to B directly. Once I did this, connectivity issues were solved. Tech support person did not have an answer to my question of whether or not they will be issuing a firmware update to fix this issue, and had no comment on me pointing out that it is advertised as compatible with N.Hope this helps others having the same issue, or considering this printer. This solution was fine for me, but may be impossible/unacceptable for others.
Not a wireless printer if your router isn't close by
August 26, 2015
Just received this printer today and I was a little dissappointed that I can't use it as a wireless printer because my router is in my basement and my desk is on the first floor. If I move the printer downstairs and set it next to the router, it works fine except for shooting out an extra page before printing an email. It even prints fairly quickly, which I like. I'd really like to give it at least 4 stars, but not if I have to have it wired to my laptop for it to work. That's not why I bought a wireless printer. When I had it set up as wireless, I tried printing a simple webpage and it took 15 minutes to print 3/4 of the page. It took a couple of minutes to print the same page when it was sitting next to the router. I can't even use the Printer Pro app to print a webpage either and my previous little, slow printing Epson would print using that app. It was in the same exact spot as this Brother.I'm keeping it because when it's wired, it prints quickly. About 5 times faster than that little Epson and it wasn't a wireless. But I'm still only giving it three stars because I want to let people know that it needs to be close to the router to work wirelessly and that when it does work, it prints quickly. I checked and it will cost me $150 to move the Uverse router closer to the printer and I don't want that expense. So for now, I'm using it as a wired-to-my-MacBook-Pro printer and it's back to not being able to print from my iPhone.
Disappointed For Several Reasons
August 6, 2015
I had an older Brother MFC 6490CW. It lasted 5 or 6 years and was decent. Color was good, print speed good, and took most paper (i.e., copy, photo, etc.) The last year or so, the color gave out and the MFC 6490CW wouldn't print color anymore. So, I went shopping, read all the reviews and because I had previous decent luck with Brother, I decided to go "Brother" again.I am sorry I did, because I think there are better printers out there in the same price range ($125). The setup was relatively easy, but once up and running, it jams quite easily. Have yet to have it take a sheet of glossy Kodac Ink Jet photo paper, without jamming. The color is drab and not true to screen color, by a long shot. The MFC J870DW prints black and white OK, but even ordinary copy paper will feed (sometimes) 3 or 4 sheets at a time. It's quick to respond to the print command and kicks out the black and white copies, which account for 95% of my printing, and does so at a fair rate and that is why I gave it 3 stars. Otherwise, I would have only given it 2 stars.Unfortunately, after the purchase, I took a look around Staples. I found the same printer (Brother MFC J870DW for $20.00 less than I paid, AND the Canon PIXMA MX922 (Multi Function, i.e., printer, copier, scanner, and fax) for about $30.00 less (at $96.00). I had the Staples salesperson demo the Canon for me and the color is far superior to the Brother; it actually prints an acceptable photo print (the Brother does not). The Canon PIXMA didn't jam any photo paper and according to the sales person, the PIXMA uses less ink, cartridges cost less and the machine itself is more "eye appealing".I guess I didn't do my homework well enough. I usually trust in Amazon's Reviews, but in this case I was mislead, or I mislead myself. I will not let brand loyalty dictate what I buy again and, I would not buy the Brother MFC J870DW again. I think there are better machines out there for the same (or less) money. The Canon PIXMA MX922, for example.Actually, I think if it hadn't been for the hassle of repacking and returning this printer, I would have sent it back. And, I may go buy the Canon PIXMA MX922 anyway, and just use the Brother for black and white document printing. The whole experience was disappointing. Hope that helps.
Not truely compatible with Apple products
May 19, 2015
After trying everything obvious then emailing Brother customer support I can now print almost all the time. I installed the "cups" driver on my imacs, and they access the printer by its web address, so I can now print all the time from these machines. The ipads and ipods acess it by using the iprint app. Unfortunately, the printer is not air print compatible as advertised, so I cannot print from any app that does not have an "open in" function, because this is the only way to get to the iprint app. For example I cannot print emails. This is super lame!!All that said, when I can access the printer, I am very happy with the way it works. I love the fact that the ink is cheap and the printer uses it frugally. I like the 2sided printing- very clever. The big touch screen makes interfacing with the printer simple."This printer was advertised as being compatible with airprint, but it is not. I have two macs plus several apple mobile devices and all of them have problems finding this printer! The ipads need to use brothers iprint app, and the macs don't seem to reliably print no matter what I do. The CD is not compatible with Yosemite so was useless. The WPA sequence did not work. Really what's the deal here? How can this be advertised as being compatible with OSX and air print when it so obviously is not?! This is the 2nd brother printer I bought, and it is exihibiting similar problems. The 1st one I bought I would have to reboot each time I wanted to print."
Good Machine but..........
April 5, 2015
Printer has some nice features but would not buy this again. Nice size with small footprint and was easy to set up. Print quality is good for general everyday printing and draft mode really increases the speed but will sacrifice some print quality in that mode as can be expected by any printer in draft mode. I was never able to get this to work as an NFC printer. Tried google print, I-print from daughter's Iphone 6 and 2 different Samsung Galaxy phones (which are nfc compatible). Re-installed this 3 times, no luck. Just cannot get it to work. The wireless set up went flawlessly and was easily able to connect to the network which is great. My 2 biggest issues are that the scanner quality is marginal at best. Scans reasonably well if use windows fax and scan software, however, using twain drivers in most other software produces a washed out gray color for texts and illustrations no matter what mode I use. In photo mode it is washed out in gray and have to edit the document using brightness and contrast adjustments to get it to look just acceptable. Edges of print and illustrations are not sharp at all. I tried using in text or grayscale modes but text mode is poor also, very jagged type in extremely high contract. Looks like a fax on thermal paper. I tried to adjust this but no luck. You can calibrate the printer, but not the scanner. Nothing I have found can resolve the scanner issues. Second issue is that you cannot use any after market cartridges as Brother has updated it's software to prevent this. So you are stuck using only Brother cartridges which are very expensive. I realize that Brother is not the only company which has done this as I have noticed that many users have the same issues in the reviews of other manufacturer's printers as well. You can get a reasonably priced printer but they all make it up in the ink. That is how they make their money these days. (there are ways to circumvent this issue but they involve a little work). Overall....a 3. If they would fix the scanner quality it would be at least a good 4 and if it did not block the use of aftermarket cartridges it would be a 5.
Great functionality/price, but print quality just ok and scanner quality poor to average
August 28, 2013
First: fantastic price.But...*** Printer ***Very fast printer. But, print quality was disappointing. Not as good as the 5 year (?) old HP 6980 it is replacing (using the same HP multi-purpose paper)... edges on black ink are fuzzy, lots of bleeding and DPI seemed fairly low as I could see stepping on font curves. It got alot better then I switch the paper type to "inkjet" (even though this is normal paper), but still not as crisp as the HP 6980. It was also MUCH slower in inkjet paper mode. I'm going to leave it in this mode for now, as it's night and day difference, but will be researching different paper.*** Scanner ***Auto scanner feeder is awesome, works great. But, again, quality was disappointing. In color scanner mode, 300 dpi, blacks were very light, looked gray, and colors were very washed out. In B/W mode (the only other option), blacks were very black, but no grayscale, so edges were very hard (like a fax).*** Network ***Setup was simple. Got it on our Wireless-N network easily. Linux saw it right away on the network, basically no setup.*** Web ***Setup Google Drive, and this was easy as well, and seemed to work great! Impressive!Did not test any other functions on the printer.Overall, the software on the printer rocks, setup is super simple and it basically just works. I just am very disappointed with both print and scan quality, the primary function of the thing. I wonder if higher end Brother ink jets are higher quality? I'm tempted to find one maybe 2x the price as I do like the functionality.*** Update ***I ended up returning this and purchasing the Epson WorkForce WF-3520 instead for not much more. I am very pleased with the Epson WorkForce WF-3520, check it out!

Bought it to use the cartridges I already have
August 23, 2017
The printer is no longer sold by HP. I bought this AIO to replace the same model that failed after a couple of years in service. I think the machine, itself, is 5-star performance, but I down-rated it because of its lack of durability. The newer models require different ink cartridges, and the greater cost of using the AIO is its high cartridge costs. I didn't want to reward HP by having to buy a new set of its expensive ink cartridges.
Functions great but requires daily reboots
May 14, 2017
Produces great prints very quickly (speed comparable to a small laser in my opinion). It was easy to network its printing feature with multiple Windows and Ubuntu Linux machines. It's taken to requiring daily reboots over the past year. Almost every morning, I find it displaying "Reboot required" (or something similar) on a white background. I don't know why it's doing this (installing updates? noise on the power line?), but it's definitely annoying.
One year & 23 day Life span of my HP officejet Pro 8620
March 11, 2017
I am so disgusted. Printer ran well until 1 year and 23 days from purchase, the printer head was "not detected." Just when I was preparing for a presentation. Worked on the problem for an hour; worked with technical support for over an hour. Technical support persons did their best. Patient people and pleasant. The HP printer I had previously (10 years old) is so much better in the quality of construction. This printer looks cheap comparatively speaking. Blessed that I still had my 10 year old printer and some ink to complete my work on time. HP should be ashame of the HP officejet 8610 that I received. What a waste of money. I only purchased a new printer because I wanted air print.I do not like the ink program and worse of all is that if you run out of one color, the printer will not print. Cannot even get it to print in black.Every store I visted for advise on a new printer, verify a consistent problem with the Printer head for the HP.All of the replacement printer reviews seem to have printer head or ink problem.Very complicated to find a new HP printer without problems. What has happened to your standards HP?I am disgusted. Not my usual state of mind.
One year and two months.
March 17, 2016
One year and two months. That's how long it lasted. Out of the blue it displayed a print-head error warning, and after going through all of the procedures on the HP website, still nothing. Now I am faced with replacing the print-head at $120, and they recommend replacing all the ink cartridges at the same time so that brings the cost within a few dollars of replacing the entire printer. Other than bauking a bit when printing on heavy stock, it worked great while it lasted.
Good for copying and printing but....

The machine produces a nice product as a printer and copier but its scanning operation is quirky and frankly annoying. For example, I am able to scan in color to a USB drive. I am also able to scan in color to the computer if I initiate the scan from the computer. If I initiate the scan to the computer from the scanner, it does not scan in color. (I looked up this problem on google and what I found (perhaps from HP) was that there was inadequate voltage in the house to sustain a color scan. A diagnosis of a poltergeist would have been more convincing.) Another issue: I always scan in color, but the defaults on the HP Scanner software appear to be immutable as defaults and I have to remember to set it to scan in color each time. These issues are mostly minor but I would not consider this machine again. However, if one is mostly interested in copying and printing, it produces excellent quality. Also, the documentation is not the best.I do not use the fax function so I cannot comment.
Print quality not so much
October 28, 2014
We are a small nonprofit. We "graduated" from an HP Envy 114e to the 8620 officejet pro printer. It does handle large volume printing, but it has been a hassle since day one, and we have since returned it and opted to buy the new HP Envy 7640 that is an improvement on our old Envy, but has lower tray/output capacity than the Officejet series. Here's why we ungraduated ourselves.1. The 8620 didn't interface well with our Apple Extreme routers. Had to spend an hour on the phone while the HP techs did something to our router configurations.2. The printer is noisy and if the table/shelf it's on is not rock steady, it will rock the shelf.3. The print in both draft and full quality is not as crisp or dark as the Envy. With the Envy, even draft mode was excellent and I rarely had to use full quality, so it saved a lot of ink.4. The printer uses the old style clip in duplexer that sticks out of the back of the printer and adds bulk. Don't know why HP doesn't incorporate the internal duplexing solution that is the standard with some of its other printers.5. Duplexing is slower than my old printer.6. I know it's not the top choice for photographs, but photos were dull.

An ink-aholic machine
December 30, 2016
While the functionality of the wireless printing and quality of printing on his machine is adequate, as an infrequently-used home-office printer it is fairly ridiculous. We learned after having to replace the printing ink several times (w/o doing much printing) that unless one prints regularly the ink dries up. In no way did we get anywhere close to the printed page numbers w/ the ink. Even more aggravating is that, even tho the black and (4) color ink cartridges are separate, you cannot just replace the black cartridge but are forced to replace all 5. Very expensive and a silly (purposeful?) condition when one primarily prints in B&W. Very annoyed.
Turn off When Not in Use
November 27, 2015
Decent printer, but can hold you for ransom. I've had this printer for about a year now. Print quality is normal for an inkjet and not too many cons as far as that goes. One issue I did have is that sometimes it grabs two sheets and prints half on one and the other half on the second sheet. This may be the type of paper I had since it was left over from my older printer as it didn't happen as much when I switch to a new paper packet. My biggest issue is the ink. Turn the darn printer off when not in use. The printer loves to do a self clean ever few days. When it does this, it wastes some of your ink. Over time it will finish it. I replaced all the ink cartridges when the trial ones finished. I bought the high yield for the black and normal size for color as I mostly print in black & white. I didn't have a need to print things out for a few months, but when I did there was a price to pay.The printer will tell you it is unable to print anything. Basically goes into lock down. This is because it ran out of the color cartridges from all the self cleaning it does. There was still an easy 80% black remaining but refused to print because it wants ALL the cartridges full. Even if you want to print in black & white, if you have no yellow/magenta/cyan then you basically have a nice paperweight unless you shell out more $$$ for ink.
Not recommended ... very spotty, undependable performance.

I did tried to get all the functions of this printer to work. After the initial installation (Windows 7 OS) everything seemed to work just fine -- printed, scanned, and faxed. Then things started to go wrong. For some reason, the scan function stopped working -- none of my scanning software would work, just got various errors. Sent an email to Brother Support and after about a week they responded with a generic reply that didn't help. Maybe I just don't have the right drivers installed, I thought. So I dutifully downloaded the latest drivers from Brother. The associated instructions were less than useless since they refer to files that aren't part of the downloads. But I figured out how to do a complete reinstallation, after which, everything seemed to work again. Then it stopped working again, not just the scan function but also the printing was erratic. A print job would just cut off mid-stream with data left in the printer. Scans were hopeless. Had no choice but to return this inconsistent printer. One of the undesirable aspects of this printer is that it installs a lot of junk on your computer. To get rid of this junk was not easy.

I've had this printer over a year now and had a chance to really use it. We bought it based on good ratings and it replaced two printers, both were HP, one quite old and used by my son, but the other was an officejet purchased in about 2008, and used extensively by me, and to a lesser extent by my wife. We do more printing than a average family would do because it's used for my work in prison ministry for newsletters, outlines, studies, correspondence courses, etc. We do print some photos, but not it's primary use and we don't print as much as a business. Here's the good, the bad and ugly on this printer:The Good: The best thing about this printer is that it is VERY economical. Printer ink is much cheaper than the HP and seems to use less of it. The setup and screen use is very intuitive and user friendly and all features (scan, print & copy) work well (we haven't used the fax feature). It's WiFi connection makes it great for the multiple computers we have it the house. Document feeder works fine. It also does a pretty good job on photos with good (but not awesome) quality.Bad: The paper tray is just too small if you are going to print any volume at all. It's fine for just a home use, but with us printing 130 newsletters on a monthly basis, and when my wife was in school printing large amounts of papers, it's just a hassle. It's also very fragile. We haven't broken anything, but it's because we are very careful because the plastic is thin and flimsy. The HP was almost bulletproof, but the Brother needs tlc in handling. If you are using only letter size paper, it works great, but the tray is poorly set up for legal paper if you are going to print more than a couple of copies. They want to fall on the floor if there's more than a dozen or so. Compared to the HP, the color quality is also "washed out." Maybe this is where the ink economy comes from, but even on it's "vivid" setting, the color on regular paper is mediocre, but photos seem equal to our HP.Ugly: This printer has terrible problems with jamming when printing large quantities of double sided print. Single sided seems fine, but it seems to hang up when trying to print the other side. It then spits out paper printed on one side and tries again. To get the 130 inserts for our newsletter, it's not uncommon for me to actually use 140-150 sheets of paper. It also doesn't like to feed a manually fed double sided print (necessary for the legal size) also jamming frequently. This is big hassle for me with our correspondence being a double sided legal size; very frustrating and time consuming. This printer may be fine for the person that uses it ONLY for home use low volume, occasionally making copies and printing photos, but I would NOT recommend this printer for anyone needing even moderate volume or anything more than letter size paper printing.
Great black ink printer, color photos are bad
March 5, 2015
It took me 15 min to set it up and print from my Android phone using their app. The touchscreen is very responsive and I didn't even need to hook it up to a computer to start printing over WiFi.Edit 03/06/15:Black prints look good but I tried printing some photos from my phone and a computer using photo paper and the color quality is very bad and washed out even after altering all the color and quality settings. If you need to print photos avoid this printer.Color prints on regular paper are also washed out even after altering print settings and cleaning print heads. If you need to print only black ink documents its ok but I returned it because I needed to print good quality pictures.
Update-not so good
August 13, 2013
Had to replace my really old printer that wouldn't work with Windows 8. The Wi-Fi only took a few minutes to set up. Was printing right away.UPDATE March 6, 2017. I know it's a little late to change my review, but this printer only lasted 3.5 years. I usually print a few pages a month. It got a lot of use during the tax seasons. I had problems with printing fairly early on that running the cleaning routine would fix. Apparently, the print head got misaligned recently. I don't know how this could happen as I never moved the printer. Brother told me the unit needed service. I have never had a printer fail in such a short time. I assume that it lasted as long as it did because I didn't use it a lot. It must have been a lousy printer from the start. Brother wouldn't offer me a discount towards a new printer. I recommend trying a different brand.

Fickle printer
January 25, 2016
When something is sent to print, I get a message that the printer is off line. When I go into the printer controls, the option to work on or off line is not active (greyed out). Re-installed drivers, reconnected to wireless etc. Nothing works. Turning printer off and then on, seems to get it to print most of the time. I would like to get it sorted out or I will need to buy a new printer soon.We have tried all the fixes for this problem and printer still won't print. We missed the return cut off by one day, thinking the one last fix would work. Now we are stuck with printer that does not work and we have to purchase another printer.
Two purchases of this POS is enough
January 6, 2016
I purchased this printer in August, 2014 and it has worked flawlessly until today. When I turn the printer on, an error message indicates that there is a paper jam in the automatic document feeder. I have spent the last two hours trying to find any small piece of paper that may trigger this error message, to no avail. I cannot use the printer because I cannot clear or override the error message. I tried resetting the printer system by pulling the plug while on, but that dang message is still there. Its really a shame since I like the printer, but I would think it should last longer than 18 months. So, what did I do? I bought another one which lasted 1 year and 7 days. This is the last HP product I will ever buy. They are crap!!!!
HP Instant Ink a winner, this printer a loser!
December 12, 2015
Update Feb. 12th 3 months of use with this printer. After using this printer for 3 months I've had enough. This one will become a back up printer for my business. Here is my main issues with it:1. The dual tray constantly loses ability to use the 2nd tray. I have to regularly uninstall and reinstall the drivers ( OS X El Capitan)2. I can't get the 2nd tray to work at all on my 2nd iMac on the same network.3. It constantly loses connection to my Apple Airport Extreme router and its only 5' away. After an hour doing a screen share with HP support they told me my router was bad. I thought maybe they were right since I had some other devices losing connection to it from time to time, so I bought a new router. Same problem with this HP printer, it's not the router, its the printer. Waste of money.4. The only way I can make this printer work on the network is by plugging in a cat5 or usb cable, so much for wireless.5. Avery labels are normal paper size sheets yet it constantly stops me from printing labels telling me the wrong size paper. ANNOYING!6, Many times this printer pulls double sheets and partially prints on one sheet7. When the dual tray does work, it only allow plain paper in the bottom tray.PROS: HP Instant Ink program is a winner if you print a lot. Averaging about 4 cents per full sheet, color or black and white. If only I didn't have to deal with all these other headaches! For the most part I'm happy with my choice in this HP printer. The reason I purchased this printer is because of HP's Instant Ink program. Now it doesn't matter how much color or black ink I use, it will cost me about 4 cents per sheet which will be great for my business. My Epson WF-3640 is getting donated to the Goodwill for a tax write off. I don't recommend any Epson printers as they waste so much ink. When printing in black only I was going through color carts like crazy. However Epson did just recently come out with their Eco Tank systems like this one Epson WorkForce ET-4550 EcoTank Wireless Color All-in-One Supertank Printer with Faxthat would be great for anyone who prints a lot in their business. Other then that, stay away from Epson printers unless you like wasting lots of money on ink.I've been using this HP for about a month now and my biggest complaints are it it pulls several pieces of papers some times, which waste my expensive shipping paper. As well it gets paper jams some times. And the 2nd tray did not work correctly ( I bought that separate and added on). However the 2nd tray did not pull paper from it correctly. After doing a lot of reading on HP forums and getting help on chat, finally someone from HP posted the solution to get the 2nd tray work correctly on my mac, which I believed fixed the problem after I used the disk utility to repair disk permissions.[...]I would also like to point out this printer prints VERY FAST. The fastest printer I have owned out of dozens. I mostly just print black shipping labels with some color so for my needs the print quality is fine. I have not tried photo printing with it.Another cool feature is you can send something to your hp email and it will send it to the printer automatically.HP Support through the forums and through chat has been very good fixing my problems as well. Not sure why people here complain about HP support, try their forums or chat, they are very helpful. They spent an hour with me doing a screen share and we determined my Apple Airport Extreme router was causing my issue, which it is.It's to early to say if I will be keeping this printer or changing to the Epson eco tank printer. My busy season with my business starts soon so it all depends on how many bad prints output from this printer. I won't hesitate to change printers if it continues having issues pulling multiple sheets of paper. I will report back after I've put it through heavy use.
WAY too irritating for words
November 4, 2015
This printer CONTINUALLY goes to sleep in such a way that I have to shut the entire thing down and turn it back on to get it to chance status from 'offline' to 'online' and thereby use it. It's scan feature also will not work with my computer until I restart the printer, it will not wake up to use from the computer. It will work just fine as a copier, but I am replacing the unit after only 5 months. Simply too irritating and time consuming to use. I have tried EVERYTHING to fix this. It also will not 'find' my wireless network to set it up. It will work on my wireless network to print, but not to e-print. I used the HP 8600 and liked it immensely. Then it needed to be replaced and I THOUGHT this would be a comparable unit. It is NOT
HP needs much better manufacturing and support Quality Control
August 15, 2015
HP has manufacturing quality control problems. The first one came and would not work because it said the "front door was not close". After I snapped the optical sensor back in place, it worked for about 3 weeks until it had random color printing problems. When I called HP, the agent I spoke to did not speak English very well and kept having to go for several minutes at a time to speak to someone else. The whole process took close to an hour. The agent at one point also said I was going to have to pay the shipping, which did not turn out to be the case. HP was supposed to send me a new unit but what came was a reconditioned unit without the print heads unit installed. The instructions said to move the print heads unit from the old printer to the reconditioned printer. Yup, the problem was in the print head unit and remained the same. When I call HP again and eventually got to talk to the hardware supervisor who spoke fluent English, he said that at least 50% of the time the problem I had was in the print head unit and they should have just sent me the print head unit first. He arranged for me to get an expedited new printer this time since they should have done that the first time. The new printer works fine so far. As a surprise to me, a new print head unit arrived at almost the same time, which I returned to HP. Yipes, what a way to run a business.
Thought it was good at first
June 8, 2015
Setup was easy and the printer worked perfectly. The only downside was the initial HP advertisement about using their ink service. During setup, everything was geared toward signing up for the service; however, unless you anticipate making a lot of prints on a continual basis, I would pass on the service, as it can add significant cost over just purchasing their XL cartridges as needed. The printer output is very good, and even extremely small type sizes are clear. I haven't obtained photo-quality paper yet to try printing a picture, but I intend to do so soon. So far, I highly recommend this printer for home or small business use.Update Dec 2015: After 6 months of very light use, the printer stopped feeding paper properly and could only handle one sheet at a time. I followed all the cleaning recommendations that I could find from HP and Internet reviews, but without success in solving this problem. Fortunately, the printer was still under warranty and I got another one from HP service. However, the replacement printer was used and reconditioned, which means that it was a broken one from another user. This is very frustrating. Buying a new printer and ending up with someone's used printer 6 months later does not represent quality service. There is no way to tell how heavily this replacement printer has been used or how long it has left on its useful life. After experiencing HP quality and service first hand, I now regret buying this printer.

Do Not Buy a Second Brother For a Second Home
April 13, 2017
There is a problem with the driver software that is very annoying. I liked the MFC-J870DW I use at home so much that I bought a second one for my vacation home. I figured with everything already installed and configured I would just plug the USB cable into my laptop when I was in either place. But the MFL-ProSuite software would not recognize the other printer and Windows 10 then installs a the generic Windows software. I can print but the Control Center 4 software can't find the scanner (it shows the Brother as off-line). After an hour with Brother support the only solution was to fully delete the MFL-ProSuite software and then reinstall the full package again, and then everything worked fine. Until I came home. And the same thing happened in reverse. Another another hour with a Brother support person I could barely understand who told me to either use the Windows scan software or remove the MFL-ProSuite and reinstall it. I asked for a supervisor and got the same answer. So if you want to have a second all-in-one printer/scanner at a second home, DO NOT BUY ANOTHER BROTHER, get another brand, install its software and avoid this hassle and tone deaf support. Too bad, I really liked this machine and the ProSuite, as is obvious from the fact that I bought a second one, but the other Brother (whichever that is) doesn't like being No. 2.
It makes OK copies but I feel like I was duped
February 11, 2016
I hate this printer even though it has been printing copies OK for me for about 8 months. So why do I hate it? Because I did a lot of reading about it, went by Staples and spoke to their personnel, and even called the Brother company to verify that I could use just black ink to make copies which is THE REASON I PICKED THIS PRINTER. I was repeatedly assured that I could use just black ink. I was told as long as the CMY cartridges were in place (even if they were out of ink) and the black ink cartridge had ink I could make black/white copies. WRONG! I learned the hard way this machine uses magenta, yellow, and cyan as well as black ink to print in black (I never printed one...not one color copy) and the machine continually drains the color cartridges which are very expensive to replace (and hey...I'm not printing in color!!!). If I had known the machine uses Cyan, Magenta and Yellow in addition to Black to print in black I never would have purchased this machine. Next time I will buy a machine that only prints in black, using 1 black cartridge. The other annoying thing about this printer is I am constantly receiving pop-up messages from brother about "low ink" or other messages. The copies it has produced have been fine but all these other issues
I hate this printer
February 6, 2016
I hate this printer. I selected it because I needed an all in one to replace my HP model that I had for many years. I considered HP ink to be pricy and so was excited when I found what I believed to be a printer that was ink efficient and for which ink replacements weren't costly. Unfortunately, the print quality has been terrible. Each time I want to print I need to do several test print pages and much of the time the quality decreases instead of getting better. I've been running through my ink quickly and was frustrated when I had to go out and buy another pack of ink. I have been getting high yield so I couldn't understand how I could possibly need more AGAIN! I had printed maybe 20 pages tops, and the rest of my activity had just been cleaning the cartridges because of poor quality. So, today, I put in fresh new high yield BROTHER brand ink cartridges. Again, the quality was shoddy. I ran it through cleaning, and test pages, and cleaning, and test pages. It didn't get better it got worse. After about 10 times of this I noticed my ink gauge. I have used HALF of what is supposed to be "high yield" ink because the quality is so bad. I spent $60.00 for the high yield package of 3 color and 1 black and it is now half gone and I have yet to get a single page of what I actually needed printed complete. I am utterly disgusted. I would Never Never Never recommend this to anyone. I've also been researching and found that it does this cleaning each night by default, which also flushes the ink. What a waste! I will never get another Brother printer and I am going to look to replace this one.
Disables itself if it detects 3rd party cartridges. Also has to be rebooted frequently when it disappears from the network.
August 8, 2015
The *recommended* ink cartridges I ordered with the printer didn't work because if you don't use officially digitally licensed Brother ink cartridges the printer will refuse to print. Plug in one non-brother cartridge and the printer shuts itself down. Now, after getting it working, it will periodically disappear from the wireless network, which is fixed by rebooting. I will never order another product from Brother.
Dead on Arrival, Slow Support from Brother.
June 13, 2015
If you order this printer, please make sure to check that it is not DOA immediately, while you are still covered by Amazon.I have owned this printer for just over four months, and it hasn't printed a single page. When I finally got the chance to set it up, it did not recognize the starter black ink cartridge. I tried several troubleshooting techniques, including buying a new cartridge from a major office supply store, and that one is not recognized either.I am presently working with Brother customer support, but it is agonizingly slow. I initially contacted them over three weeks ago. When they answer my e-mail response, the next step *may* be to schedule a tech support call. Given their hours, I may have to rearrange my work schedule to accommodate.I am at the point now that I'm wondering if it will even be worth the extra time and effort to try and get a working printer out of them. I may just cut my losses, buy another printer (different brand, obviously), and find something creative to do with this functionless heap of plastic. Maybe use some power tools to see if it's possible to fit this in one of the smaller USPS flat-rate boxes, to send back to Brother.
This is Brother's replacement of Model MFC-J825DW, a workhorse ...
June 10, 2015
This is Brother's replacement of Model MFC-J825DW, a workhorse printer still being sold. That older model is being sold for more money. There is a reason WHY this newer Model MFC-J87DW sells for much cheaper: Because it is a lousy printer. Its paper feed is unreliable (jams, stuttered feeds), its black ink reservoir is smaller than the J825, its control panel is awkwardly in the way of the scanner opening ... AND, this model is NOT an upgrade to the older J825. Do not buy it. Buy the J825.I've had this for about a month and it's already dying.

THIS REVIEW WOULD BE ZERO STARS IF THEY OFFERED THAT OPTION!!!!!!!!!!!
December 22, 2016
I am a student and home business owner, and am completely dependent on the reliability of my office equipment. When I purchased the HP Pro 8620, I (wrongly) assumed I was getting a quality printer/copier/scanner.I read the Amazon reviews for this product before purchasing it and found them primarily on either end of an extreme. People either really loved it or hated it. If you are one of the lucky few who have a had a good experience with the HP Pro 8620, I'm happy for you. If you have hated it, I feel your pain. The very fact that people have such opposing experiences with this product should indicate that problems exist. What is HP's solution for people who received a faulty printer/scanner/copier? They direct you to a Forum where an astonishing number of other hapless customers commiserate and exchange self-help suggestions. If you really want/need to talk to someone from HP, they offer you the opportunity to PURCHASE the capability of getting help from one of their own employees in the form of an online chat. This process is completely discouraging because you should be able to get help directly from the company who sells the product. I had no idea how worthless a 1-year manufacturer's warranty could be until I began dealing with HP. When my frustration with HP drove me to contact the provider of the extended warranty I also purchased, they said they could not help me until the manufacturer's warranty had expired. The first week, this product performed nicely, but right away different functions began failing, with no apparent cause. No changes were made in other software or hardware. It wasn't moved, unplugged, and didn't lose its Internet signal. It just inexplicably quit printing, or scanning, or copying. I have hired tech experts more than 10 times in the past 11 months to try to get this product back up and running again. Consequently, I have spent more than 3 times what this copier originally cost in a vain attempt to get some good use out of my purchase. So, is this product worth the money??? Only if you're one of the few who get a copier that works without failing the first month after your purchase.
Sent me a refurbished OfficeJet Pro 8620 according to HP Support!
May 25, 2016
Upon receiving my HP Officejet Pro 8620, I set it up. It connected to my wireless internet without any problems. Hooked it up to the phone jack and attempted to send off a test fax. Tried faxing to different places and it didn't work. Read the manual, went to several websites, faq, youtube -- wasted 90 minutes of my time. So, I called HP customer support (Mitch, very nice gentleman) and gave him the serial number. He told me it was refurbished. He said the computer was first used back in Sept. 3, 2015 and because of that my warrant started back then even though I just purchased it just now (May 25th, 2016). I asked him if he could send me proof so he gave me the following website that HP uses to confirm your warranty which is:[...]When I type my serial number it gave me,"Service type: HP HW Replacement Support"Mitch told me that "Replacement Support" means that is refurbished. If it is new the service type would read "HP Warranty Factory". I already printed the return slip from Amazon for a full refund. Thank you Amazon for refunding me at lightning bolt speed!
Printer is okay, but HP Instant Ink can hold you hostage
February 6, 2016
The printer suddenly stopped being able to connect to the Internet, and because we were enrolled in Instant Ink, it was not allowing us to print (because it needs to report back the # of pages printed). HP technical support couldn't resolve the issue, even though everything else in our household could connect just fine, and the printer had worked for over 10 months prior to stopping. As a result, we had to buy a new printer since our son had homework to print that was due the next day. Rest assured our new printer was certainly not an HP device. If you're going to use the Instant Ink service, be aware that you will be prevented from printing if the printer can't "call home" regularly. We thought that wouldn't be a problem, as we're reasonably tech savvy, but it seems the hardware itself can fail to connect. Good idea, but terrible execution.
Sounds great: the printer sleeps when it isn't in use ...
February 3, 2016
I am a big fan of the HP all-in-ones and have always upgraded from one to the next. The 8620 just broke this streak as I will be looking for a new brand. This printer has a new ECO feature that cannot be disabled. Sounds great: the printer sleeps when it isn't in use and wakes back up when you send a document. The issue is that it doesn't wake back up. I had to go downstairs, touch the screen, disconnect and reconnect my computer to the internet then pause and resume printing queue to get it to print. Not exactly convenient. I spent an hour on the phone with HP. They did some reconfiguring and assured me that the issue was fixed. It wasn't. After another hour on the phone, they agreed to send me a new printer as they assured me that my experience was an exception. I have set up the new printer and discovered that in order to print I have to take all the same steps. It is great to add features that help the environment but not at the expense of function. This printer will be going back to HP and I will be looking for a new one that actually prints!
June 2015 purchased and August 2015 scan and copy feature stops working!
August 28, 2015
I purchased this printer because of the great reviews and it prints just fine but the scan and copy images are terrible!! I've had this printer less then 2 months and it's outside the return time and HP no longer services this item...I'm so darn mad. It scans with a huge white streak down the middle of the page! Color and black and white copies are worse!
Poor documentation, poor tech support, terrible OCR text recognition, basic features missing
April 22, 2015
Update: Does not include modern OCR scan to searchable pdf function. It give you the ability to scan a page to pdf OR rtf. The rtf software jumbles characters and cannot recognize all text on page even if all text is same format and size. I still have to use a different scanner to scan to pdf.You ask a question like how to change default settings for folder scan, and instead of an answer, they demand to remote access into your computer. You tell them no, and they demand the ip address of the printer. After repeated times asking the same question, I never got an answer for this from tech support. My older HP printer had everything outlined in the user manual. What wasn't outlined was obvious. No features were left to guess about how to change or adjust. This printer leaves a lot of questions unanswered. For example, I had to contact their tech support to find out that the printers wifi will not connect to a 5ghz only wifi network. Their tech support did not know how to change the default folder that scans go to when you scan to PC or Mac from the printer (you're at printer, click scan to....computer....computer-name...pdf...send (change the default folder this process scans to from Documents on Mac or My Documents on PC to somewhere else as default)). They didn't even know what the default folder was.Limited OCR options. My older printer had scan to searchable pdf with multiple pdf type options. This one has only scan to pdf, or scan to .rtf searchable text. ******No scan to searchable pdf.********This is an upgrade from a still working 9 year old HP 5610 All in one. The one star is for building printers that last (HP 5610) and for the printers basic functions working (HP 8620)). Losing the other 4 stars was due to newer printers with less customization and tech support that doesn't know their own printers. Tech support does not speak or understand english well.I've had so much of a problem with HP tech support (Aden) that I am considering sending this printer back for a refund. My old printer still works, I just wanted a newer printer with duplex printing and network capabilities.UPDATE: 4 May 2015Scan bed stopped workingLCD Screen stopped workingPower button non-responsive (light on but pushing it or holding it didn't do anything)Had to unplug machine. After plugging back in and restarting, It kept getting stuck at "preparing to scan" while trying to scan pages via scan bed. I had to do a factory reset to get my work finished.Update: 26 MayThis printer has major problems handing multiple computers. When I turn the printer off (still plugged in) , and back on to try to get past another problem, I had to manually reconnect all the mac computers to the printer. If a windows computer has a cancelled print job (scenario was with 1 page), it takes almost 30min for the printer to get unstuck so other connected computers can print. In the meantime, the screen has a small message at the top saying "printing" even though it's not doing anything. All other computers say "printer in use." Not surprised to see this printer now on sell at local office stores for less than amazons price. I expect this printers about to be discontinued.
