Durable, fun
August 10, 2016
This is a durable little camera with many different fun features. We bought it for our preschooler to use during a family vacation. She has used it nearly daily, and the batteries have lasted. At first, I wouldn't let her play the games because I was afraid it would eat up the batteries, but since we've returned from our trip, the batteries are still going strong. There are also fun photo frames you can use when taking photos. The resolution is pretty low, so you probably wouldn't want to print the photos out, but it's fun for kids to take their own pics without having to use a parent's phone. Our daughter has dropped this camera quite a few times (including on pavement), and it doesn't even have a scratch on it. One feature I found thoughtful is that the carrying strap can be attached to either side of the camera.
Hours of fun
May 5, 2016
I bought this for my 3 year old and let me tell you Best Thing EVER!!! He spent all of Christmas day taking, as he said "photos". From the moment we opened the box until he went to bed he had it in his hands. I even had a hard time getting him to open his gifts as we went to other family members houses. He just wanted to take photos. The next day I finally got him to stop taking pics long enough to show him the othre features. He quickly learned how to edit and add to the pictures. He was cracking himself up adding mustaches to his sister and making crazy backgrounds. He also got enjoyment out of the games and making videos. I also can't believe how durable it is. Although being a VTech product I shouldn't be surprised. There is a slot for a mini sd card, but you probably won't need one. It has so much memory already. At one point there were well over 500 pics on the camera and we didn't use an sd card. If you're concerned about losing any pics due to batteries dying or being removed then yeah the sd card would be necessary.
Durable and Fun!

Six months later and this camera is still going strong! We bought this in June for my then 3-year old. I'm an amateur photographer, and she requested a "real" camera for her birthday. After doing some research, we purchased this. This camera has surpassed expectations. It is incredibly sturdy, easy for a preschooler to use and fun. The auto-shutoff feature is great and a definite battery saver. She can easily grip it using the sides, and the dual view finder is genius for small kids. Did I mention it's durable? This thing has been dropped, kicked, bounced off the patio concrete and it's still going strong. There are some games you can play, but my daughter hasn't tried them. She wants to take photos like Mom, not play a gadget. And for that, it's perfect! The resolution on the photos is abysmal, but my daughter isn't exactly Anne Geddes. It's not like I'm going to print her photos off and hang them in a gallery and invite the mayor. We have printed out a few and if you keep the prints small, say 3x5 or even 4x6, they pass muster. To my daughter's less discerning eye, they are awesome! Your photographer and subject have to hold very still or you'll get lots of blurring, but I find that is a good thing to help my daughter learn concentration and patience. In all, this Kidizoom is a great product and I would definitely recommend it!
Great Kids Camera for Little Learners
January 17, 2016
My daughter received this in pink for Christmas and my son kept stealing it so I got him his own. Now they each have a fun, durable little camera of their own (so they leave Mommy's Canon Rebel alone) and they are having lots of fun playing with them. They are 2 and 5, so honestly, the pictures they're taking are not great- lots of blurring, repeats, crazy close-ups, etc...- but these are great learning camera. The picture quality isn't that bad, given what it is. I bought them a Playskool ShowCam because it looked a lot like mine, but the picture quality was terrible and they lost interest quickly. Both cameras have animations you can apply to you pictures on the camera, and you can also connect them to a computer for more editing options and storage. But the VTech are better for little hands and the dual viewer is easier for little eyes (took me a minute to get used to it!). PLus, these are built tough. They have been thrown, dropped and whacked a handful of times now without any issues. They use a lot of batteries though. 4 AA's per camera and we've already replaced all 8 batteries once since Christmas. Yikes. But for the price, these are a great gift option and a fun somewhat-educational item for little kids, especially if you have budding photogs or artists. The blue one arrived quickly and in perfect condition and is still working great.

My twins would not leave our phone cameras alone. It resulted in a lot of meltdowns. We don't let them use our phones because of their need to be password protected and wiped if accessed too many attempts. Needless to say they wiped our phones too many times. My solution was to get each of them their own special camera that was just for them. They love them!I wish it didn't have games on it because I really wanted to encourage focusing on picture taking, but that's a small gripe. Sometimes as a parent I don't want all the extra "perks" that come with toys these days. The best part: after a number of days we uploaded the pictures to the computer and looked through them. It was fun to see what a toddler sees.It is blurry if it's not held still. Toddlers don't really hold still, so a lot of photos are blurry. However we have been trying to teach them to be more steady if they want a clear photo. Of course, it's up to the artist in the end.I'm glad I bought these. Our phones are now not begged for very often and they have their own cameras for our fun family outings like taking pictures at the zoo.
Great CHILDREN'S camera... for Children (not over-bearing parents)
October 1, 2014
My wife and I purchased this camera for our son's 3rd birthday and he loves it. We saw a lot of ridiculous negative comments on here about the camera's picture quality as well as the games and noises. First off, you can definitely adjust the volume of the camera, its under the settings options. Second, this is a cheap children's camera, meant for children. I'm sure the picture quality isn't going to be as good as your $1,500 Digital SLR camera.... but this is for a child, and it works perfectly for a child's standards. The snaps may be a little slow, as well as the shutter speed causing some extended exposure shots with the ghost trails. This doesn't have to be a bad thing, it can be an opportunity for you to explain to your child about how the camera works, and how you need to hold it still while taking a picture. The camera also comes with a free "app" purchase which is little games or graphic effects for the pictures. We picked up the dinosaur graphics package since our son's birthday party was dinosaur themed, and he absolutely loves it. As for the games, I don't think our child has played with them once, he has too much fun taking pictures of Mommy and Daddy and swirling our faces or putting silly graphics on our pictures. Once again, great little camera for a child. If you're going to judge it based on the performance of your Nikon, Cannon, or Sony digital camera, its probably going to come up short. But if you're a 3 year old who is amazed by the magic of taking pictures and editing them, you'll be blown away.

Excellent build for a kids camera.
July 14, 2016
My son seems to really like the camera. He is 3 1/2 and I read the other reviews about how there 1 year old just picked it up and started playing games without any instruction. Not the case with my kid. However it is pretty simple to take pictures. My son likes holding it up to his face to look through the eye sight rather than looking at the LCD display which I thought was a great feature. But like any camera there is a menu with a gallery of your pictures and I had to show him how to get there to look at his masterpieces. All in all it didn't take him long to figure it all out. He plays the games on it now while were driving in the car and he loves to pull it out like dad to take pictures when were at the zoo, camping, etc. The camera is next to indestructible. The rubber grips shelter the rest of the camera when dropped. Excellent build for a kids camera.

Bought this as a gift for my son as his "big brother" present when our little was born. It was so special because he saw everyone taking pictures of the baby and he was able to contribute. He is only 3 so he is not able to use the camera with all of the functions but he loves carrying it around and taking pictures! We have not printed out the pictures yet so I can't speak on the quality but I think it will make a budding photographer out of our kiddo!
It takes pictures. It's built for kids. It's cheap and durable.
November 4, 2015
It's a $29 camera for toddlers and elementary school kids, in a sturdy plastic case. It's not going to compete with your SLR, your point-and-shoot, or even cell phones since 2008. Images are soft, colors are iffy, the dynamic range is poor, it's fixed focus, and there is no flash. But it is most definitely a real camera. The pictures are easily clear enough to see exactly what's in them, so I can guarantee there will be an occasional really good shot of the family dog worth printing out. And if the kid turns out to be a budding Ansel Adams, you can get them a better camera. And this is $30. You actually CAN do worse than this camera for that money. Some technical notes:There aren't any pictures of this, but the bottom of the camera contains rubber ports for the mini-USB connector and a microSDHC slot. When plugged into a computer, the camera (and any microSD cards inside) appear as USB Mass Storage devices, which means it works with pretty much any operating system from the last 15 years; the images are in the DCIM folder like any other digital camera, so most photo software will recognize it as a camera. The pictures are 1.3 megapixel 1280x960 jpeg format images, roughly 100-400 kilobytes each, which I suspect are upscaled from 640x480 images. The only picture-taking option is to switch to 0.3 megapixel 640x480 images; it really is just point-and-shoot. The videos are 160x120 motion jpegs with 22 khz PCM sound in an AVI container, which means pretty much anything from the last 15 years will be able to play them. The interface uses a 4-way joystick, an on/off button, a delete button, two shoulder buttons for zooming in and out (or, if you're not in the camera function, raising and lowering the volume) and a shutter button on the top, where it is on other cameras. I particularly like that pressing the camera button from any screen (except video, where it begins taking the video) will bring you to the camera. That will make it very easy for a little kid to take pictures without much fuss. There's a 1.8" low-resolution (probably 160x120) LCD screen in the middle of the back that can be used as a viewfinder (and to play games), or kids can aim by looking through the twin optical viewfinders at the top.In short: It's very much a real camera, and I'll update this review once it's in the hands of my nephew to find out what an actual kid thinks of it.
Sturdy kids camera but slow shutter speed.
March 29, 2015
This item was purchased as a big brother present for our son when his youngest brother was born. After reviewing a lot of kid cameras, we decided on this one. He was initially interested in it but lost interest quickly (though it may just be his age .. he may like it when he's older?). My wife and I ended up playing around with it more than he did ! It is definitely a sturdy camera that looks like it could withstand a bit of abuse. My only complaint is that it does take quite a while to actually take the picture and my son doesn't have that kind of patience so most of his photos turn out very blurry (as did my wife's.. I guess we know where he gets his impatience from !).
Perfect for little budding photographers
January 7, 2015
As a professional photographer I felt it necessary to buy my daughter her first camera. This is a great toy to get your kids started with photography. Many great features and great battery life.Pros:Durable. I also have a 13 month old you likes to play with her 3 year old sister's toys. And by play I mean throw furosiously to the ground. This camera has hard rubber edges to protect from the little siblings.Fast. It responds very quickly to the ever changing mind of a 3 year old. No delay in pictures.Simple to use. I don't want to have to learn how to use a toy so that I can then train my child. It should be obvious enough for them to figure out themselves. This camera is as simple as it gets. On is on. The shutter button launches the camera mode and takes the picture and the arrows review the pictures.Storage. The file sizes are small which means your child can take plenty of pictures. (And it continues to work past the available storage so as to avoid a temper tantrum) If you so desire, you may add additional storage.Cons:Many options. If you get lost in the mix of all the additional apps and downloads then you may have a very annoyed child. But simply press the shutter button and you are right back in camera mode.Low quality. This isn't going to be a camera to have your child create new family portraits with. But it gets the job done. It has about the quality of the original camera phone. All in all this is a solid option for your little budding photographer.
Great camera for the little tikes!
December 15, 2014
This is a great camera for the beginning toddler/preschool photographer! My son LOVES to take this to the zoo, the park, everywhere to snap shots of just about everything. Yes, the quality isn't very good (shutter speed is super slow), but there is lots of room for photos (with room for expansion) and there are also some fun games to keep them occupied in the car/plane/train. I would certainly buy this camera for anyone in the 3-5 range. If you think your child would be more interested in the quality (or if he/she wants to look and edit the photos later and expects them to be super crisp and clear) then perhaps a more adult camera is better. My son still drops things quite a bit and this puppy is good and rugged.

May 30, 2016
I love the idea of this camera and so does our toddler. It was purchased as a gift for a recent family vacation and he was SO excited to get to ask to take his own pictures. There are some fun toddler friendly effects you can apply to the pictures and the steps nrcessary to delete a picture make it less likely to have accidental deletes. It's also surprisingly sturdy, which is great, and the built in memory is good (especially if you have a child who starts mindlessly clicking while walking along in his stroller). The only downside that we really found with it is that the time from pressing the button to the actual picture being captured is long enough that often either the subject has moved or the toddler holding the camera has moved....creating a whole lot of blurry pictures. We did get some priceless shots, though and his enjoyment of it was enough to make this a good purchase in our minds.
This camera is a good camera for a child
May 4, 2016
This camera is a good camera for a child. We gave it to our 4 year old. She can take pictures with it and enjoys both the screen and looking through the 2 eye fields. The picture quality is good enough for our purposes. If we wanted high-quality images during an event we would have to bring 2 cameras however. My only real problem is that the camera has games. My child starts taking pictures and quickly shifts gears into games on the smart phone like screen. We did not know there were games on the camera, and would have bought a different camera had we known about this feature. If there is a way to turn them off, i haven't been able to figure that out, but that would up my start rating to 4
Nice camera, until the toddler lost it.
March 2, 2016
The features on this camera are pretty simple, and the resolution is pretty low. But it's for my 2 year old. So he can carry it around and click the button and it makes noise. He's happy with it, so i'm happy with it.Until after having it for 2 days he lost it somewhere when he went to stay over night at a friends place. It was a nice two days. Now he yells CAMY! CAMY! and I have to say, "sorry, I don't know where it is... sorry bud."It was nice for 2 days.
Fun toy but missing some key safety features... like a proper battery compartment!
December 28, 2015
This was a Christmas present for my son who loves to try to grab my DSLR when I'm shooting and ask to take pictures with it; he also always seems to find my iPhone and do the same thing. He absolutely loves this camera and wants to carry it with him everywhere. One of the main things I like about it is that it's harder for him to delete pictures. We got a hand-me-down kid's camera a while back that recently died (it was a Discovery Kid's digital camera and was probably about 5 years old) and the way you'd delete images on that camera was by pressing on the trash icon twice so he would just sit there pressing that button repeatedly deleting all of his pictures - then he'd hand it to me asking "What happened?" when all of his pictures were gone. This camera makes it a little harder for him to do which is a huge bonus! One thing I dislike that it is more of a gaming system than a camera but some of he extra features (like the editing and frames) are kinda fun. However, my main gripe that makes me want to rate it 2 stars, is the battery compartment. The aforementioned Discovery Kid's camera had a battery compartment that required you to use tools to get the batteries out (as do most kid's toys!!!) this camera has a compartment that's easy release much like an adult camera. While my son is 31 months (a few months shy of the recommended 36 months), he's smart enough to figure out how to open the compartment and spill the batteries out (just three days after he got it). If it's something that's marketed for young kids, why set up the battery compartment in such a way and make they so easy to get to??? It doesn't make ANY sense. The only reason it's rated a 3 instead of 2-star is because of how much he absolutely loves it but it may get taken away soon if I can't get him to stop messing with the battery compartment because it's JUST NOT SAFE.
This is a camera AND game device - watch out!!!
May 23, 2015
I love the idea of this camera even though, yes, it does take mostly blurry pictures unless the subject is well lit or outside in natural light, but for a 3 year old it's fine and lots of fun. BUT - beware!!! The camera can be connected to a computer and free games from VTech can be downloaded, which is fine, but there are ALREADY games preloaded onto the camera and there are no instructions about how to remove them. If your life is like ours, your kid does NOT need to be hooked on games and more screen time from another device. We put limits on time for TV, tablet and phone games (though the games we have on our devices are primarily educational, at least!) but there's no way to let our son have free use of his new camera without his also having free access to games with almost no redeeming values. One game's goal is for the child to choose the one thing out of 4 that's different from the others, which is a skill to learn. When he first played that I realized he was having trouble with the concepts of same and different, but after we practiced for about 1 day he got it. Now he just wants to play those d@#% games all. the. time. grrrr If you want just a camera, don't buy this-- which is a shame because it has fun photo editing and enhancing features, shoots video and also just audio and can take a card for additional storage. The games issue is the only reason I gave it 3 stars.
Challenging for "Touch Screen" Generation of Kids to Use
October 23, 2014
I bought for my 4 year old daughter. The picture and video quality aren't very good, in my opinion, especially when little, shaky, distracted hands are using it. But it is a kid's camera after all.Pros:--It is durable and my daughter enjoys using it.Cons:--Children take a million pictures of random things that they don't care to keep and that take up a lot of space on the camera's memory card. The camera does not have a user-friendly way to delete multiple pics at once (that I'm aware of). You have to hit a couple of buttons to delete each picture or video individually. It takes a while and becomes a weekly project for Mom, since a 4 year old doesn't have the patience to do that.--The home screen, where you can toggle between camera, video, games, etc. is not very intuitive and takes some practice for a 4-5 year old to do on their own, but part of this could be the touch-screen generation they are becoming with ipads, iphones, etc. Anyway, I have to help her get to what function she wants to access on the camera. She's much more adept at using my iphone to take pictures, delete them, etc.

Beware that there are video games included
May 18, 2017
I really wish I had read the product details more carefully before ordering. I bought this as a CAMERA toy for my 3 year old son (new big brother gift so can help take pictures of the baby, etc.). I did not realize that there were 3 VIDEO GAMES included on this camera. Of course, my son discovered the video games and became obsessed with playing them and had no interest in using this toy as a camera which was why I purchased it. The camera works fine from what I could tell and I don't have complaints on that (though my son hardly used it as a camera so not sure about its durability), but I had to hide this toy because I think the video game/screen time is unhealthy and inappropriate for his age. I do not recommend this toy if you are looking for just a camera.
Save your money
April 6, 2016
Purchased this for our 5 (almost 6) year old grandson for Christmas 2015. It is now April 2016, I wanted to wait to see how it worked. The pictures and video for the camera are terrible. Out of focus and blurry. Colors are off and the pictures overall are bad. He played with the gaming option for a couple weeks. He hasn't touch the camera since early January.I am very disappointed. I have purchased V Tech products when my children were small and had never had a problem with them. I was expecting the same high quality for my grandson. The only good thing I can say about this camera is that it is very ruggedly made.
Not what I was expecting
January 9, 2016
I purchased this camera for my 5 year old grandson thinking it would an alternative to him using my Coolpix camera. This camera seemed way to complicated for a child and the picture quality was awful. He lost interest very quickly. I returned the camera and will probably purchase him his own "adult" digital camera.PROS:Easy to handle.I liked the binocular style viewing.Seemed to be a rugged camera that would survive the abuses of a 5 year old.CONS:Photos are of very poor quality - Blurry. Even when an adult took a pictureView screen is very small as are the command screens. The controls seems very complicated for a youngster. No instant play back - navigation through the various commands to see a picture
Not a Dedicated Camera
July 17, 2015
This camera falls short of expectations. The actual camera features are rather limited and it comes with games that can be played on the screen. My kids ended up using this as a game station, rather than a camera. Buying a "real" but inexpensive digital camera was the final solution. If you want a gaming station, buy a dedicated unit with a large screen. I'd expected more out of the camera, but the photos were grainy.
It may be a toddler's camera, but still...
May 5, 2014
I bought this for my daughter for her birthday - she has been trying to grab my nice SLR every chance she gets and being a toddler I'm afraid she'll brake it. So I decided to get her a camera to call her own. She enjoys playing with it for the most part, but for one major issue. The shutter button is EXTREMELY slow. When you push the button to take a picture you expect the camera to take a picture. But no. It waits a food few seconds before actually taking a picture. For a fast moving toddler who wants the picture right now!, that isn't acceptable. This is designed for little kids, and it's definitely durable enough, but the speed of the shutter is unforgivably slow. I will definitely have to upgrade this to a better camera sooner rather than later.
Maybe not for a busy 4 year old
December 30, 2013
you have to stand pretty still to take the photo and once you press the button you have to remain still otherwise it's just a big blur. The minute my daughter presses the button she moves it to look at her picture so of course each picture is a blur. I'm hoping she'll learn how to use it eventually. Also the "menu" is a bit complicated for a 4 year old. There were mixed reviews on this and I should have listened to them. Like others' said the picture quality is pretty low but I was only hoping for moderately ok pictures not "real camera" quality. Unfortunately we're not even getting that. Debating just returning it and getting a more expensive one or a different toy altogether.

While it is sturdy the picture quality is terrible
March 5, 2016
I bought this for my toddler since she always wanted to play with my camera. I was excited for her to finally have one of her own that would be able to hold up to her abuse. While it is sturdy the picture quality is terrible. It's not easy to use and the pictures come out blurry and grainy. I thought maybe she was moving too much while taking pictures but even I have a hard time taking a clear shot. On the plus side this doesn't seem to bother her. Also i feel the battery compartments could be constructed better. I hate that my four year old can open them and take the batteries out with no difficulty. It's ok since it occupies her but not worth it if you actually want pictures worth keeping.
poopy vtech company behavior- unavailable for two weeks so far
December 10, 2015
not able to communicate with vtech for two weeks and counting since their hack. Cannot use downloads(get "forbidden" when trying to access learning lodge).. they have not responded to emails either. This is not a pop up storefront but they are acting in a really unacceptably poopy manner. Cannot really fully utilize the camera- cannot back the photos up without the up to date download from learning lodge but they are absent. Have waited for two weeks and will not just have to give them unacceptable marks and try to teturn the camera.
Disappointing! If you want a camera for your child, don't waste your money on this!
October 16, 2015
If your child likes to take photos this "camera" is not for you. This is a toy with noisy games and blurry photos. My 5 year old grand daughter loves to take photos with my cell phone so I expected that she would love own her own camera. Sadly, the shutter speed is so slow that nearly every photo comes out blurry. Really... how long can a 5 year old and the family dog stay still?!The sound quality for voice recording is very low volume and poor quality in contrast to the games, which are loud. She turned to the electronic games for entertainment since the camera was not viable. She became instantly addicted. Her mom had to take it away from her after a few days. Then I gave her my old cell phone to take actual photos and she is much happier and creative. I would have returned this product but she had used it and I threw out the packaging. This is the first review I've ever written. I've never been so disappointed with a toy, so I had to speak up.
Deletes internal memory whan an SD card is inserted
July 28, 2015
This camera deleted its internal memory when I inserted an SD card. No, the SD card doesn't just take precedence; once the SD card was removed, and the camera plugged into a PC, the internal photo directory had been wiped clean.Because of this, my 5-year-old daughter lost precious memories of someone she left behind when we moved out of state. It broke her heart. I emailed VTech about it and they apologized. But they made no acknowledgment that this was a flaw in the camera, and no indication that they would take it up internally. This behavior would be considered totally unacceptable in a camera made for adults. VTech seems to think that since it's "only" kids memories they are erasing, it doesn't matter as much.
Children deserve better
January 26, 2015
I'm amazed at how a manufacturer can underestimate a child's intelligence. I purchased the previous model of this camera and my child was very disappointed and bored almost immediately at the age of 4. I purchased this new improved version thinking that the quality may have improved. I was wrong. The screen is barely bigger than the older model and the pic quality is still pretty bad. I guess the thought is that kids like to take pretend pictures and don't care or notice the quality? Not true! I returned this camera and got my daughter a Nikon Cool Pix for $40 more and she is delighted. She takes it everywhere she goes. She is taking really good pictures for a 5 year old and cares well for the camera. With the VTech, her pictures were awful and the camera ended up in the back of her closet collecting dust.
Unnacceptably poor quality
August 17, 2014
This is the first VTech product that I do not like at all. I got two cameras for my son ( age 5) and daughter (age 3). For all the games and extras the camera has to justify the price tag, the most important feature - taking pictures - is awful. The screen is little, the picture quality is very poor and the camera does not focus. To think about it - it is built for kids, and their hands are not as stable holding this bulky camera, so I would expect that the auto focus would be much better. Once you point a camera at the specific object it takes a few seconds to focus - I find it very outdated and simply unacceptable for a technology in 2014. My daughter just took over 150 pictures and we deleted all but 3 because the rest were blurry. And the camera does not have a flash. Very disappointed with this purchase - i would have been much better off with just a regular cheap digital camera instead of the one geared towards kids.
