Side by Side Comparison of: Whirlpool vs International Silver

I have a kitchenaid KUDS301X dishwasher and because the silverware basket is on the side, forks are always catching on the rubber gasket that seals the door from water. Then the seal goes bad and there is water all over the floor. The seals are easy to replace, but they cost $60. each, so after replacing them a few times, I was eager for an alternative. This basket fits perfectly in our kitchenaid and is tall enough on the side that it protects the gasket. YAY!

It is hard to believe the price on this thing from is a bargain - from Amazon, that is. Our original was decomposing after only a few years. I am pretty sure the reason for the thing falling apart is that the part of the basket going to the back of the dishwasher is directly over part of the heat coil, close enough to cause damage over time. I contacted the manufacturer for a goodwill replacement - no dice. They offered to sell me one - for $55!EDIT 3/31/17 - I want to spread the word about my experience with KitchenAid (Whirlpool Corp) on this silverware basket. Before ordering here, I called their contact center to ask for a goodwill replacement (dishwasher is out of warranty), They said no. While shopping for the best price, I saw a boatload of posts by people experiencing the same problems with warping and disintegration of the basket. I am convinced the basket problem is caused by a design defect in all of their dishwashers where the basket goes on the side. The rear of the basket sits directly over the heat coil. I believe that proximity to the heat coil causes degradation of the basket over time. I again contacted KitchenAid with this information and asked for a goodwill reimbursement for the basket I bought here. They said no - again. This is very different from my experience with an out of warranty problem on a GE refrigerator. GE took care of the problem, although they were not obligated to do anything. KitchenAid's approach is that once out of warranty, the problems belong to the customers. Consider that when you next shop for major appliances.EDIT 6/11/17 - I must have caused Whirlpool some embarrassment. They came thru with a reimbursement check and apology. Still, my experience with out of warranty situations has been outstanding with GE, not so much with Whirlpool.

This has worked out great in my Kitchen Aid dishwasher. It even is labeled as a Kitchen Aid basket. Like others have stated, my original basket was crumbling and falling apart and silverware was falling through the bottom. At the disbelief of my husband, I didn't look up part numbers, I just read reviews and compared pictures of this basket to the one in my dishwasher, and guess what? It worked great. This product is for my Kitchen Aid washer. It states "Kitchen Aid" on the basket handle. It's make of the same exact plastic that the original basket was made of. I'm sure it'll last only a few short years since that's how long the previous one made it. I understand it's something due to the location of the heating element in the washer. I give it all 5 starts since it IS the same and correct basket, made same, etc. It's the dishwasher I'd give less stars on just for putting the heating element directly under the basket, causing a shorter life.

Perfect replacement for my original basket which disintegrated in the dishwasher and was driving me and my family nuts! No more will my kids plastic spoons break through the bottom of the broken basket and land on the heating element thus leaving a nasty "burnt plastic" smell, not only permeating through my dishes, but stinking up the whole house. Thanks, Whirlpool, for yet another in your long string of shoddy product designs! I won't get into how my brand new JennAire refrigerator had Coke & beer cans exploding because the thermostat was placed right next to the door light, so every time the door opened (and light came on) the thermostat thought the fridge was 80 degrees and blasted out cold air until the light bulb got cold again... thus resulting in all my stuff getting a blast freeze. No, this isn't the time or place, but none the less, this basket works great for now, until this one also turns into peanut brittle and disintegrates in under 3 years just like the last one.

Great Buy! I disagree with other reviewers. I have used these for several months and they have not rusted at all. The quality is great and they seem extremely durable. Very happy with my purchase. Good price too! I would recommend these to anyone looking for an affordable set

Great for the price! I was looking for silverware to put in my mom's nightly rental cottage. This is the perfect set! We didn't want to spend too much money on a rental as we change out the silverware about once a year, and these fit the job. It was a great price compared to other sets listed on Amazon. Plus, it came with a lot of "extra stuff" that other sets don't normally come with. I recommend!

I got this set about a year ago and loved it. I recently bought another set to add to what I already own. There was the concern of rust when I first purchased them, but after about a year only one knife has a tiny bit in the design on the bottom (and that's because I left it in water in the sink). I love the weight of them.

I am so happy with the 53 piece International Kensington flatware set. The dinner forks and knives are large and fit your hands nicely. I was very pleased with the finish, the feel and the price. A very nice set of flatware.

I couldn't possibly be happier with this flatware set at this price ($32.09 on Amazon on 12/22/13 and Prime eligible). Full five-piece place setting service for 8, with 5 additional serving pieces and 8 steak knives. Brings the cost per unit in at about $.61, a true bargain. They have a wonderful, non-fussy design, are a much heftier weight than I ever anticipated at this price, and each piece was packaged in a protective sleeve to prevent scratching in transit. While the steak knives are not exactly the type you'd want to put out for entertaining, the silverware pieces are truly lovely and I would have no qualms about using this set for entertaining. I don't have a dishwasher, so I cannot attest to how they'd hold up in those circumstances, but they clean easily to a streak-free shine with hand washing. Would have been happy with this set at double the price.

It is my 3rd replacement for this basket. I would have given it 5 stars except that the dishwasher itself has the flaw of the heating elements being too close and this basket melts over time. If the basket had a metal bottom it would get too hot and might damage something in the dishwasher or on your counter if you take it out to put dishes away. You cannot move or adjust the heating elements so there is nothing you can do except buy replacement baskets - so this time I bought 2 of them.

Okay, it fits and all that, but not built as well as the original. (Then again if the original was all that great, why did I need a replacement?)

Exactly like my original, although it is missing the middle lid. I decided I better keep the three from my original. I've really never used them before, but we have been now. I guess they keep utensils from hitting and breaking the bottom, I've NEVER had that problem from any other dishwasher we have had.

Great replacement for my old basket. Unfortunately the plastic seems to be thinner and less substantial than the original so I expect to be replacing it again in a few years but it works great for now.

Perfect factory OEM re placement basket. This basket would have received a 5-star rating if it were not for the fact that this basket should not have broken in the first place. Apparently the heating element in the bottom of the dishwasher heats the plastic utensil basket and makes it brittle which leads to cracking and breaking. The basket should be made of material that can stand the heating process.

Great replacement basket. An exact replacement for my original one. Solidly built.Like everyone else who has posted, my original basket started to crumble on the bottom. Dishwasher design failure, not the fault of the basket. But my original basket lasted more than 5 years. I ALWAYS put my knives in tip down. That never affected the basket. The issue with mine (like so many other) was the decay from being too close to the heating element. But after 5 years I think it has served its purpose very well.

They seem to be holding up as expected for the price. Just make sure to clean the utensils before using.

I love these! I ordered these to replace an old set of silverware. The weight of them is perfect and I like that they are somewhat "oversized". I have been using them for a couple of months now, and have had no rust or discoloration from putting them through the dishwasher. Would definitely recommend.

This is a good deal for how much you get but the quality isn't really up to par with what I would normally buy at the store. The silverware looks nice but is light weight, making it feel cheap. I bought these as a backup for my current set but would probably not use them as my only set.

My new silverware arrived today. This kit is awesome and comes with a lot of pieces. The forks and spoons are a little bit larger than I was hoping for, however, they will be fine for me. I was concerned that they'd be a little too thin and I was right. The metal is a bit thinner/less chunky than I expected for the price. I saw some other silverware in local stores that had more heft to them. These look beautiful and i'm sure they'll be fine for my condo, however, I want to point out that they're not dinner party professional grade...if that makes any sense.

Nice medium weight set of silverware, which also includes butter knife , serving spoons and steak knives. I accidently ordered 2 flatware sets and now have flatware service for 16 (wasn't worth the price of shipping it back). But to tell you the truth, i really like having plenty of flatware. I had expected this flatware to be a bit heavier so that's why it received 4 stars instead of 5...but it is still a great buy for the buck. It's attractive and great for everyday or holiday use. Stands up well to being washed in a dishwasher.

I really liked this set and the price was just right. The utensils are not too heavy & not too lightweight. The additional serving utensils were also a good addition and the material seem to be of good quality.My only sore point is that it doesn't come with dessert forks. Maybe they could include dessert forks & charge a bit more as this would prevent customers from buying dessert forks separately.Nevertheless it was still worth the buy.

In 14 years, I've had to change the rack 4 times. The middle slots are the ones where the plastic always becomes brittle and eventually becomes a hole. This is because the heating element is directly underneath and the plastic is exposed to the heat here more than the other slots. That's why you'll find that it's the two middle slots that wear away the fastest.This is a poor design by the manufacturer and there's really nothing that can be done about this other than to keep changing the racks every few years.

It is the right basket. It fits perfectly. However, this is the third one I have had (2nd one I have purchased). Over time the bottom falls apart causing holes in the bottom of the silverware basket, which means that it does not adequately hold the silverware.The little pieces that fall off the dishwasher basket end up in the dishwasher food grinder, wreaking havoc with that part of the dishwasher.If you purchase this, when you notice it starting to fall apart, make sure that you check the food grinder and clean the little plastic pieces of the silverware tray out so that the dishwasher will continue to function correctly.

Great price from Amazon! But this is the third time the basket has been replaced because parts of the bottom end up breaking off. I assume from the heat and possibly weight of items. The company that makes them needs to make them stronger.

I would like to give zero stars as it is not the basket issue but a kitchen aid issue. The basket is too close to the heating element and it wears through the bottom of the basket.

So if you are looking for this basket chances are your old one has started crumbling in the back and center bottom. Really happy I found the discussion on my3cents,com which explains that the problem is that the heating element is too close to the rack so at about 3 - 3.5 years the plastic starts crumbling, with the pattern of decay following the heating element below. It has nothing to do with putting your knives in or anything else you may have thought you did wrong. Upon calling kitchenaid/whirlpool they were sorry for the problem and offered a 25% discount on a replacement, bringing it to somewhere over $50 with tax and shipping! Thankfully they did confirm the part number (whirlpool 8531233) which matched what I had found here on Amazon for $33.00! - and it even has the kitchemaid logo on the handle. Only 3 stars because more than likely this basket will ultimately suffer the same fate. In theory you can extend the basket's life by not using heat dry. Really a shame that whirlpool is not standing behind their product on this as the dishwasher otherwise works great.

Fits my dishwasher just as it was supposed to. A replacement for original (5 years old) where the bottoms of the sections were broken and allowing silverware through. I have NEVER had this happen with any dishwasher utensil basket before. So, while this "works" there is something very cheaply made about it. I suspect this new basket will be no different.

Some of the utensils have started to rust a bit around the base.

reviews were deceiving on this one, they serve the purpose however: I will donate to one of the kids when they move, great starter set for the price.

I love this set. Problems are that the butter knives rust where the dots are....both in the dishwasher and hand washing. I don't know what is different about them to the others. They also came with noticeable scratches and imperfections. Unfortunately I just decided to keep them since I desperately needed silverware.

Ran the silverware through an initial hot run in my dishwasher, and noticed rust pits forming already on the knives. I guess the silverware doesn't do well on hot.They look and feel high-quality otherwise. I'll just be hand-washing them going forward.

Selecting the silverware from a catalog is difficult. This particular pattern is larger than I anticipated and is slightly heavier than I expected. The knives are good, nice sharp edges. In general, a good selection but it will take getting used to.

A little thin and light for my liking. the edges are kind of sharp too. But for a cheap set to get us by until we can get better flatware (ie: until our babies are old enough to not accidentally throw away silverware) it serves its purpose.

The new one had a hole in 1 month but it fits well and is better than the other one that is full of holes.

I purchased this one, the same one that was in the machine when I bought it. Unfortunately the original quality was bad. The original wore out. I put knives in blade down and I know this can cause the container to wear out quickly. Unfortunately the only area that corroded was the area directly above the drying heating element. I called to let the company know but they were not interested.The pieces of the basket that broke off then collected in my food grinder resulting in my dishwasher no longer washing but only steaming my dishes. The repairman opened the grinder and found 20 pieces of basket. Pieces removed. Dishwasher now working perfectly. Will buy another brand basket the next time around.

It fits our dishwasher fine. But come on, what does it cost to make and ship this item, four or five dollars? If I had found a cheaper alternative I would have bought it.

You get what you paid for. If you are expecting something nice and stylish, do not waste your time on this set.

Looks nice, but the spoons are enormous! Also, the knives started to rust after a few washings.

These looked great when they arrived and for a couple of weeks after. But now they are showing signs of discoloration or possible rust in the detailing. It's a bummer. Great set, arrived on time in good shape, the discoloration so quick is quite disappointing. We have a brand new top of the line dishwasher.

Rust on these "stainless steel utensils" after 1 week of use. Would not buy again.

Silverwares is GREAT. love the durability.. set is functional very nice... negative is someone motha#%^%&*%$ Lied... cant be stainless cause like everyone else posted it RUSTS!. I am CLEAN house keeper and NEVER let my spoons/forks sit in water yet in a brand new dishwasher they rust.... It rubs off pretty easily but still qaulity 2/5 thickness and style 5/5 i love it. only a couple rusted but i will use em for years and scrub the rust off... quality is s*** though if you are goin for rust free silverare.. I mean the set i replaced this with was 20 years old soooo maybe my expectations are too high...

It's not the same quality as the original. The handle is very flimsy. I have doubts that this will last.

Delivery was quick. This is our 3rd one in 2 years. Hey Whirlpool stop using Chinese plastic that can't take the heat of your junk dishwashers. This is another reason why I stop purchasing your crappie products!

Whirpool/Kitchen Aid really needs to do something. This is the 2nd time I have replaced in 2 1/2 years. I don't put sharp objects pointing down. I read it's inferior plastic. Okay so the replacement is less than $40 but it's so annoying and makes me irritated with the company. There's too many options out there nowadays and I will most likely take my business elsewhere when I buy new appliances of any kind .

The seller and the replacement part is fine, I just can't express how much I hate my Kitchenaid Dishwasher enough to give anything it touches a positive review. My dog could lick dishes cleaner. If it hadn't cost $1200 and been completely customized to integrate into my kitchen cabinets I would have replaced it instead of continually trying to fix it.

No exageration, within 3 weeks this thing started falling apart. Only issue is the original one lasted 8 years or so and this one lasted 3 weeks. Not sure what alternatives there are for this item but I certainly will NOT buy it again.

wrong shape, wrong color, wrong product. looks nothing like the amazon photograph. not made by whirlpool, no kitchenaid logo, etc.... this is a cheap aftermarket piece of crap that doesn't even clip into the dishwasher.

We purchased the set on 11/2/2015 and on Christmas morning for breakfast we noticed that the spoons and knives had rust on them. I read the reviews prior to purchase but just that the is was because they were kept in water. I usually wash in the dishwasher after each meal so there is no long term soaking. I would say that is not the only reason they rust. Hmmm - my other observation is that the set is extremly light feeling in my hand, that took some getting used to but now I have rust. I would suggest buying something else.

I don't write many reviews but I have to save others from making the same mistake as I did. After one wash the silverware shows rust. As much as this costed that should have never happen. I'm going to buy other silverware. Such a disappointment.

I have two months to this product and already have rust into 2 pieces. If the product was manufactured from stainless steel, there was no rust. I want to return this.

Junk! All knives are rusted like the others have said. I do not have much hope fore the rest of the set lasting much longer. I should have read the reviews more thoroughly before purchasing them. I have owned these for 3 month now. Shopping for a better set.

I read the reviews carefully for this flatware before purchasing it so once it arrived six weeks ago, I treated it very, very gingerly. I've never let the silverware sit in water and it is washed and dried rapidly in the dishwasher. Within weeks, rust appeared on the ornamentation. Now half of the silverware is rusty. This is a garbage product. Purchase something else. I wish I had.Aesthetically, this flatware is uncomfortable in the hand. The squared-off handles poke into your palm. My husband hated the feel of it immediately. Again, purchase something else!

I should have listened to the other reviews, Second washing and the handles on the knives are all rusting.
