Great for starters!
September 15, 2017
Fantastic mic for the price. The shock mount is quite sturdy and very easy to operate.Note this is a CONDENSER mic so it does require phantom power (+48V).Overall sound quality is very crisp, granted I've only tested it on vocals so I'm not sure how it will respond to being put in front of a cab.If you're looking for a decent condenser mic for podcasts or vox recordings then this is a great choice.
Amazing quality for the money

Marshall might be better known for amps but I record a ton of VO with this mic and I am very happy with the results. They have a wide range of mics and although this is not the most expensive mic they have it really sounds great.
Sounds Fantastic when using Phantom Power and close micing
November 12, 2015
Sounds Fantastic when using Phantom Power and close micing. Vocals are punchy and has great proximity effect. Haven't used for Guitar Cabs but I'm sure it would compare to Sennheiser AKG Shure front facing Mics. $59.00 purchase was well worth it. Use as Center Mic with CAD217 for M/S, mid/side micing. Nice features with 150 Bass Roll Off and -10db Pad flip switch right on Mic Body. sturdy Construction, shock Mount, Carrying Case are all a nice touch. Handles screams real well without distortion/Colour/Clipping. could be a bit more sensive but is ok for the Price.
An Amazing Microphone - at any price!

I have a collection of high end microphones. I purchased this as a quick fix for an onstage solution for a vocalist who sings and plays keyboards. I was blown away at the quality, and uncolored quality of this mic! Absolutely top rating for a singer's mic. I will be purchasing this again for my home studio!
Excellent Microphone at a great price
May 5, 2014
The MXL-770 microphone has wonderful clarity and sensitivity. It comes in a nice fitted case with a good quality shock mount. Build quality is excellent with one exception... when I first got it, it hummed loudly. This turned out to be due to the wind screen not being fully in place(it snaps in as you rotate it). This microphone is SENSITIVE! You will need to control noise in your environment to get the best out of this microphone. It easily pics up the gentle tapping of my partners fingers on her keyboard across the room... something I, unaided, don't normally hear. Make sure you have phantom power available(it won't work at all otherwise). Clear, sensitive, quiet... HEAVY
Best microphone I've used.
October 15, 2012
I'm not too experienced in the field of music creation, but I mainly use the Audix i5, I've used the Shure Sm57... As well as some vocal mics. I know they're not condenser mics... But its quite a difference. The microphone has given me absolutely NO noise yet, and it captures everything....HOWEVER! If this is one of your first microphones!!!! do know you will have to buy a separate 48V Phantom Power Supply!!! It's cheap... It's only about $20-$30, and it's VERY worth it.

Product was received fine. Took about a week before I could use it due to phantom power supply. Tried recording with audacity. Sound quality is definitely good and noise levels are really low (if you do not audio compress and have a proper studio without external noises). Definitely a good mic to use.Found no defects as of yet.

Great affordable home studio microphone
May 1, 2015
Great affordable home studio microphone! I use this microphone almost daily, and it's bulletproof. The sound quality is excellent. The pop filter and shock mount are quality, and I especially like that the pop filter mount is built right onto the shock mount frame.

November 14, 2015
The hard case that comes feels sturdy, but wasn't very well put together. The foam on the case would peel off and it was pretty badly glued on. The microphone itself was fantastic! It has little issues here and there, but they can be easily overlooked. My first impression of this microphone was great, and would recommend it to others

this would definitly be a 5 star if it stated in the description of the product that it requires other things to use it like a 48v phantom power supply and an assortment of other things the regular person might not have but the quality is great
Fits my needs well
January 9, 2015
I need more time to experiment to fully explore the abilities of this mic, but at first use it is impressive. The high end seems a little more prominent than the lower frequencies, but that's ok with me. Make SURE to use a pop filter, as you don't want to damage the diaphragm. If you're getting funky sound, research mic placement techniques.

Great mic by the value.
It's better than the Blue Yeti
July 28, 2016
I am a singer on YouTube and I mix my own songs. In order to celebrate my new sub count, I decided to get a new microphone because my old microphone (The Blue Yeti) picks up too much white/background noises and I get these weird screeches now and then. Anyway, after reading through many reviews online, I decided to get an XLR microphone and so I got this and I'm currently using it with the Scarlett interface. To me, the microphone sounds alot clearer and cleaner compared to the Blue Yeti and I dont hear alot of hums or background noises either. But still, if ur room is untreated, you should still expect some minimal background noises and another thing I also want to mention, is that this microphone could actually sound a bit harsh, flat and nasal to some people (because it sounds neutral like what u put in front of it) but if you know how to use an EQ, De-esser or mix properly you shouldn't have much problems.Overall, for the budget, I highly recommend this microphone for anyone thinking of switching from a USB condenser mic to an XLR cable mic.

Solid mic for the money, very quiet, versatile and flexible. Owned this one for just under months now and I can say it's served me quite well in the home studio. Surprisingly, the included pop filter is actually good. Included cable is also of decent quality. Great package for the home-studio budget musician.

I swear to whatever god you believe in that I've chosen at times to use this over a u87. That being said I'd rather have the u87. It just depends. I'd recommend this mic as a great starter mic for for the home enthusiast. It work well with cheap pres but really opens up with better options. It pairs well with grace in my humble opinion.

Low-Frequency, Wind-Like Noise Solution
May 29, 2016
Great sounding mic. My problem with it is that I started hearing a very bad low frequency, wind-like sound. Completely ruined all recordings. After looking up solutions I figured out it has to do with the moisture from the air getting into the diaphragm. Storing in it's box, in a dry place wasn't enough. So my solution was to buy a bag of 50 silica gel packets. I keep my mic in there now and ever since it has worked great, perfect sound. Little bit annoying that the product is semi-faulty though.
Great budget condenser.
December 27, 2014
This is a great mic for the price. I want to stress "for the price" a bit because I feel like that is what makes this mic a winner. One would be hard pressed to find a better condenser at this price. For that, I can over look its shortcomings. The build quality of the mic itself is great, but the rest of the kit is just cheep. The shockmount is a joke.I understand that the focus is really the mic itself. I had second thoughts when unboxing this thing because of how flimsy the box was. When I got to the mic itself, I was impressed. The mic itself looks and feels good. The build quality of the mic definitely holds up against higher priced condensers. It makes the corners cut on the shockmount and case almost reasonable. How does the mic sound? That depends on a lot of different factors. Others have commented on how it picks up noise. The noise issue isn't a problem as I have come to expect that with a condenser. This isn't a plug in and play mic. It takes some know how in order to get the sound you want. I found it to be strident and a bit bright for my taste. With the bass cut it sounded tinny. It's easier to darken bright mic than the other way around, so with a little TLC the issues can be fixed. A little dynamic processing (light to medium de-esser) and a bit of EQ to bring up the low end. After a little processing all I can say is WOW. With a little work the mic sounds fantastic. One problem that I came across in at least two of these microphones is that there is a horrible reverb issue. It seems to be caused by the hollow casing used on the mic. The issue can be fixed by dampening the inside with some foam or cotton.Overall this is a decent mic for the price, It requires a bit of time and patience, but the payoff is well worth the investment.
Buy the MXL-V67I instead if you're recording music
December 26, 2014
I purchased this after my MXL-V67I Dual Diaphragm Condenser Microphone suddenly stopped working after 2.5 years of use in a demo and podcast studio. I loved the way it made my vocals sound (rock band and podcast) for the price ($125 at the time of this writing). There is no comparison here to Neumanns and other four-figure vocal microphones you'll use in a professional studio -- there is a reason these mics are highly valued. They capture every detail and make your vocals sound their best. But most of us don't have four figures to spend on a top shelf vocal mic, so I was pretty impressed with the quality of MXL-V671 compared to the top shelf. The MXL 770 (this product) is just far worse than the MXL-V67I, I am mostly writing this review to highly recommend you save up a little more cash and get the MXL-V67I instead -- even though it crapped out on me after a couple years. After using the MXL 770 for demos and podcasts over the last few months, it's just sounding like half the mic the MXL-V67I. The MXL 770 microphone doesn't compare, it sounds like crap up against the dual diaphragm condenser.I also used the MXL-V67I as a room mic for drums and it worked great, this MXL 700 just doesn't cut it for room sounds from drums. So, if you're specifically comparing these two mics, definitely spend a little bit more money if you can, because while I'm sure this mic offers something for budget-seeking, amateur podcasters and vocalists, the MXL-V67I will do way more for you in terms of at least getting in the same ballpark of a professional studio sound, even if it is has a limited shelf life.http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000HRVTA6/ref=pd_luc_rh_sbs_03_02_t_lh?ie=UTF8&psc=1
I don't know...
June 17, 2014
I bought this microphone based on the reviews and price, which are both stellar. It looks like a solid device, comes in a case, and with a shock mount, but when I hooked it up in my home office, it picked up everything! I mean everything. The hum was so loud from the lights, I started researching ways to use different lights, soundproofing my computer, installing sound foam on the walls. Then by chance, I ordered a second microphone of a different brand for the same price just to see if it would be different (plus it looked better) and the difference was eye-opening.So I returned this one. I don't need to record the lights humming, just my voice. The external switches are nice, but it just picks up too much. I don't know if it is by design or if I got an extra sensitive one, but I need a microphone that picks up at a reasonably close range and not literally everything in the neighborhood. It's also really big, much bigger than it needs to be. I went for a smaller framed mic with better isolation (is that the right word?).

I really wanted to like this mic
June 12, 2017
I really wanted to like this mic, but there was too much floor noise/background noise. We have 6 other mics we regularly use in our studio, and were excited to use this mic. We also have a quite few other Rode mics for different uses, but this one failed to meet expectations. The price was so good, I really wanted to like it, unfortunately it wasn't great for our needs. I could see this being an adequate mic if you needed mid-entry level pro voice over recording.

Tinging when I recorded.
March 30, 2017
I had to return this item because it was defective. I heard a Tinging when I spoke. Noise Floor testing so tinging, just when voice came thru. I called a music shop to ask about this sound, they said it was the mic. It started malfunctioning in less than 3 weeks. I rarely used it. Just be aware.
NOT the Worlds Quietest Microphone...
June 19, 2013
Cons:After the glittering success stories people had with this microphone, I gladly purchased one to add to my microphone collection. Only 3 hours after it arrived, I had it boxed up and ready to return to seller. This microphone claims to be the 'quietest', yet there were uncontrollable noise levels impeding through the microphone. I changed the xlr...nothing changed. Changed the power outlet of the preamp to avoid any grounding issues and still no good. Turns out, my $100 MXL 909 is the worlds QUIETEST microphone when compared against the Rode NT1A.Pros: Besides the noise issues in the microphone, the frequency response of the mic was fantastic. Very good presence in the mid range, with a gentle 1K boost. Really like the tonality of the microphone. Unfortunately I was not willing to sacrifice a good sounding vocal to high noise floors. Conclusion:Try a $100 MXL 909. Beautiful mic for the extremely LOW price. It will save you time and headache.
Not Quite
March 22, 2012
I don't mean to put this mic down at all, but I bought it hoping to improve upon the Shure SM58's I had on hand, as well as some older, rather cheap condensers. The SM58 is a workhorse dynamic that does quite well in a variety of situations. Unfortunately, the NT1-A did not perform much better, if any, in a recording environment. Other than being extremely sensitive to background noise, the audio quality was similar, which, believe me, is not a bad thing. It just didn't have a richness I was hoping for.

I am not really impressed.
July 20, 2015
So I have been in the market for a new microphone for the last several months. I have been looking at the Audio-Technica AT2020 for a Condenser but this came up on Prime Day and I decided to take a chance for the price. So I have been using this for the past few days and I have to say I am anything but impressed. The sound levels coming in to my interface are extremely low, especially for a condenser. I have to push the gain up on both my interface (A Focusrite Scarlett 2i4) that nothing you are recording is useable. Everything vocally is blown out, still sounding like a whisper even when you are yelling, while everything in your neighborhood is coming through as well. I have tried it on multiple machines, software and even into a mixer to a 4 track. This thing just picks up like garbage.I do have to say except for being a microphone that doesn't work very well, it has some excellent build quality. The storage box is nicely made if not a little cheap feeling. The included shock mount does the job ok, although I would replace it with one of higher quality after awhile.I believe I am going to return this back to Amazon and go for something else. Perhaps I got hit with a bum mic but I am not wanting to take that chance again.
Would Not Recommend for First Time/Up-and-coming Podcasters
March 20, 2015
I was planning on using two of these microphones for podcasting, and I had working XLR cables and a Focusrite Scarlet 2i2 audio interface to go along with it. Neither microphone I ordered seemed to work, as neither mic picked up any audio signal. If you look at some of the questions asked about the item, this appears to be somewhat common problem. I'm not sure if these mics were 100% defective, but I know for a fact that my cables and equipment were not.The main reason I would not recommend this mic to first-timers or the like is that A) the microphone does not come with any sort of helpful guide. It has a thin booklet containing recording suggestions, and vague FAQs, but no direct step-by-step setup guide or manual. And B) there's very little help on the web for people who've had my problem. I was not able to find any website or forum to help with setup instructions or guides. Only reviews and links to Amazon.Don't buy this mic unless you're 100% on how it works.
Thin and bright for male voice-over work. Regretting my purchase.
August 16, 2014
If you are thinking about using this mic for voice overs, mono style stationary voice work (and you are a male) then do yourself a favor and grab an at 2035, after using that and a behringer b-1 (had to return the at-2035 back to work and the behringer blew out on me - I know behringer QC right lol...) I would say both did a better job of capturing a more warm smooth sound for my slightly deepish voice. When I hookd this mic up I noticed how it sounded more thin and bright when compared to the other two.I don't have experience recording music with it so I can't comment in that regard, but I am really regretting the purchase of this mic and wish I had of got the 2035...The build quality is pretty solid and the case and shock mount are good though.

This item arrived on today. I was excited until I opened the box. I paid for a new Rode NT1a microphone. This item appeared to be a B stock item. The items were not sealed in plastic and the mic cover was worn. I'll probably be returning it for that reason. I want a new unopened product.

December 3, 2015
I would like to state right from the start that I'm a recording/mix engineer, so my review is based on several factors.#1: Ease of use.I give the mic 4 out of 5 for ease of use. It doesn't have ANY buttons/switches. This includes high pass filters. The only reason that is an issue for me is the fact that I have to add a high pass filter in the mix. I would much rather get it right from the source rather than "fix it in the mix."#2: Build quality. The mic gets 5 out of 5 on build quality. According to Rode, the microphone is manufactured in Australia. When you hold the mic, it doesn't feel cheap at all.#3 Noise floor.I give the mic a 3 out of 5 for noise floor. They advertise the mic as "The world's quietest microphone." It's true that it's a very quite mic, however what you need to take into account is the fact that the vocals will be quite as well, not just the room. I have to turn up my preamps to a significantly higher level to get a strong vocal signal than I do with other LD condenser microphones. If you have a cheap preamp, you may not get very good results this way.#4. Sound quality. The mic gets 1 out of 5 for sound quality. I hate to break it to you guys, but the mic sounds cheap without a ton of eq'ing. There is a very unnatural buildup of mud in the 200-400 Hz range. After I EQ the mic, I generally have to add a multiband compressor to the mids. The mids are really unbalanced... The highs sound tingy and harsh. If you buy this mic, I hope you are very familiar with De-Essers. This is a VERY VERY sibilant microphone.Long story short, this mic takes a lot of work to make it sound somewhat professional. If you want a much balanced sound for not much more, take a look at the Audio-Technica AT4040. At the time of this review, you can pick this up on Amazon new for $299.00If you already have the mic, check out getting it modded. Look up oktavamod. This will make the mic sound AMAZING.

Cheap price for a reason...
September 20, 2016
I've used MXL's in the past and was excited to give the 770 a try. The mic sounded "thin" with vocals and it really didn't like the thump of a nearby upright bass... resulting in a low frequency hum that I finally was able to eq out... to the disadvantage of the vocals. I was disgusted and embarrassed. The band I was running sound for were veterans and were gracious to let me try out this mic on them. I ended up cutting the mic halfway through their performance and waved them around to the other mics... somewhat saving the show. I would've returned this mic but after reading the terms, it would've cost me as much money to return it then it was to buy it to begin with. I may run into a situation where this mic will be a good fit... but I doubt it.
Amazing! Not only is Marshall Electronics admitting this product ...
August 23, 2016
My experience with the performance of this microphone has been very, very disappointing. I had a major hum on my recordings and after a painstaking process of elimination, discovered the loud hum was being generated from this microphone. And you won't believe this...after contacting the company, Marshall Electronics, I was encouraged to fix the hum myself. I was sent a link to a blog post where a customer discovers an inherent defect in the manufacturing of this mic. Apparently, the manufacturers used black paint inside the ring between the base barrel and the head which causes major grounding issues. In the blog, the customer is encouraged to take the mic apart and sand the black paint away in the areas where the paint should not be. Amazing! Not only is Marshall Electronics admitting this product is defective, but they want the customer to assume the responsibility to fix it. That's not all. I paid to send it back and get it repaired only for it to come back to me in exactly the same defective shape it was in the first place. The mic still creates a huge hum. Unbelievable!

DEFECTIVE
October 22, 2014
This microphone brand has a great reputation, but the ones being sold by Amazon.com are defective. I bought this microphone a few months ago, and was very excited to use it. I connected this mic to my m-audio m-track plus and then connected everything through Garageband. I got a lot of distortion feedback, but could not hear myself or the track, except for in my headphones. My Macbook Air picked up the mics signal, and the phantom power was definitely on, but nothing I sang recorded. After endless tries, going to different friend's setups to figure out the issue, everyone just came to the conclusion that my mic is defective. By the time i figured it out though, Amazon would not let me return the item. I'd recommend to everyone to NOT buy this mic, especially from Amazon.com because it will most likely be defective.
