Great product / Even better customer service!
April 17, 2017
I received my scale working but with a broken case, which is used as part of the scale.I can still use the scale and love it, just wish the case was not broken so i could use it with the scale. So I contacted the seller, and instantly resolved my issue! Many companies can make a great product, a great company support their customer with their great products!American Weigh is the epitome of a great company with perfect customer service!
Sensitivity tests - acceptable tolerance of 0.2g
November 2, 2016
(Full specifications included below.)I chose this scale because I wanted an inexpensive, compact scale with a high capacity and at least 0.1g accuracy, and because the reviews looked good. I intend to use the scale mostly for weighing small bubble-wrap mailing envelopes and small shipping boxes, but I will sometimes need to weigh herbal supplements, and I need those weights to be accurate to a tenth of a gram or so. I was not sure if a scale with such a high capacity would be sensitive enough to measure small changes in weight, such as when I add a tenth of a gram of herbs to the weighing platform, so I also bought American Weigh's Chrome-201 (200g x 0.01g). With its help, I conducted some tests. This scale does sometimes report 0.1g changes in weight, but not reliably. It usually requires a 0.2g cumulative change to update the reading, unless I press on the scale or lift and replace the weight, which causes the reading to update and reflect the 0.1g change. The scale does reliably detect 0.2g changes in weight, even when that weight is added very gently and gradually. This is true whether the starting weight is near zero or near 1000g. The scale cannot detect a total weight of less than 0.2g (this is listed in the specifications). The work-around is to use a tray and zero-out its weight with the Tare feature. This scale has an "acceptable tolerance" of 0.2g, so that is probably the reason for these behaviors.I conducted my tests using powder (gently sprinkled), an eye dropper of water, and shreds of paper. I verified the readings with the Chrome-201. Both scales seem to be accurately calibrated, and usually gave matching readings (though they were sometimes off by 0.1g). The Chrome, by the way, exhibits the same behavior of updating the reading typically only when the weight has changed by at least 2 increments (0.02g in that case), and it only reliably detects a total weight of at least 0.05g.I have a few minor problems with this scale. See the CONS section below.AWS Blade-1kg Specifications:--------------------------------------------Max Capacity: 1000gMin Weight: 0.2gUnits: gram, ounce, troy ounce, pennyweightAcceptable Tolerance: 0.2gCalibration Weight: 500g (the manual and the scale itself reported this, and I successfully performed the calibration)Recommended Accuracy Class: OIML M2Power: 2 x AAA (included - be sure to remove the plastic tab between the batteries and the contact)Dimensions: 0.8" x 3.8" x 3.8"Platform Dimensions: 2.7" x 2.7"Made in ChinaPROS:----------Seems accurate, both by comparing to the CHROME-201 scale (readings usually match, or are sometimes off by 0.1g), and by weighing US coins. Readings are also reasonably consistent. The case and lid make good trays, and the case (being taller) can serve as a standoff for large items that would otherwise obscure the readout.Seems sturdy and the build quality seems good (for a cheap scale).CONS:----------The bottom tray/case fits so snugly that I can remove the scale from it only by holding the case and striking the heel of my hand sharply against a firm surface to knock the scale out of it into my other hand. I do not like doing that with something so delicate. The top tray/lid does not protect the weighing platform from pressure. It fits right against the platform and the scale will report weight when I press moderately firmly on the lid, even near its corners. And even though the lid fits within the bottom portion of the case, it sits higher than the top of the case and so even the case will not protect the scale from things being set on top of it.The swing-out unit would be better if it could swing out all the way so that it would be less easily obscured by large objects on the scale. When testing the scale's ability to detect tiny changes in weight, I found that the auto-off will activate even when there are small (0.1 - 0.2g) changes being reported in the readout at least every ten seconds. I assume this is because the scale has a tolerance of 0.2g, and so changes by no more than this do not count in the software as activity. I can prevent this by pressing on the scale periodically.
Great inexpensive non scientific .1g scale.

Received this a couple of day ago. Comes in a nice two piece plastic case which you can use both as a tray for weighing small items and to protect the scale when not in use. It does NOT come with a pouch as in the description. The whole scale itself is 3.8" square x .8" high, scale platform is 2.7" sq. The plastic case is 3 7/8" sq. x 1" high. The diameter of the blue lit screen is 3/4" and the height of the number is 1/4". Gram and pennyweight goes to one decimal place. Ounce and troy ounce goes to two decimal place. Accuracy is +/- .2 grams. Min weight is .2 grams in .1 gram increments. Max weight is 1000 grams including tare weight (i.e. if tare item is 30 grams max weight of item to weigh can only be 970 grams). The scale weighs about 140 grams with case about 164 grams. It auto shuts off about 65 seconds after giving a reading if scale is not used (no override for auto shut off). Ok, enough of the specs. I didn't have any calibrated weights to test the accuracy of the scale so I used coins to test it (looked for the newest and undamaged coins and cleaned them). U.S. coins weigh as follows penny = 2.5g, nickel = 5g, dime = 2.268g & quarter = 5.67g. I tested each coins and 10 coins of each to see the accuracy of the scale. All the expected weight came in as it should and it rounded up to the nearest tenth. So I know the scale came calibrated accurately. What I did next was to make a 500 gram weight to use to recalibrate the scale in the future if need be. I took a small glass jar with a lid and filled it with coins and weighed it to 500 grams. Tested the weight several time to ensure it read 500g. Now I have a 500g calibrated weight. I know it might be off but this scale is not a scientific scale, specs says to use M2 which can be off +/- 80 mg, and the unit itself can be off +/- .2g anyway. When you do weigh things, you need to place it in the middle. Never drop any thing you want to weigh. Always place the item gently onto the scale. I love this scale so far. I used it many times, measuring dry pasta, spices, coffee and fruits. Keeping in mind to make sure each measurement is under 2 lbs./1kg.I've retested the scale each day and it still reads 500g each time. Great .1g scale for under $10
so it is optimal for measuring fine grains of salt and for measuring ounces of hops ...
June 24, 2015
I purchased this scale to measure brewing salts for homebrew applications. It measures on a tenth scale, so it is optimal for measuring fine grains of salt and for measuring ounces of hops to the tenth of a degree. It has a little flip out display, which is pretty cool. The backlit display is bright to read in almost any lighting condition. Someone had mentioned that is wasn't calibrated, but after a quick TARE and placing a 50G weight on it, it was perfectly calibrated. No need to do anything different. Great little scale for small weight applications. I highly recommend!
Greatest little scale ever!

This is thee best food scale I have ever tried. Do to a medical condition, I must weigh all my food to get the exact weight to enter in nutrition. This is so compact I carry it with me @ all times.............yes folks, I weigh my food in restaurants. I now have 2 of these!
AWS Blade-1kg Small compact scale perfect for my needs
November 6, 2014
AWS Blade-1kg Small compact scale perfect for my needs, weighing out precise small amounts of chemicals. For calibration this scale requires a 500 gram weight, I ordered the (American Weigh Scales 500 WGT 500 Gram Calibration Weight) along with this scale and the Blade-1kg was spot on from the factory.

Great little scale!
June 13, 2017
This one was purchased in order to weigh tenths of a gram, as a pocket scale, and is therefore expected to be more accurate than the kitchen one I have.I weighed two pennies (2.5 grams each) and one nickel (5 grams) and this scale was accurate to the tenth. I'm happy, it's bright to look at for sure, and easy as pie to use. Very good on the budget as well. No complaints whatsoever and I should get a lot of use out of this in the future.Great little scale!
Great for Reptiles
June 7, 2017
This is a great scale. I purchased it to track the weight of my crested geckos, which provides me peace of mind knowing that my geckos are healthy and gaining weight as they should be, and alerts me if problems arise and they lose weight. The scale is good for up to 1000 grams, which is over ten times as much as I need it to measure, so it's perfect. I also like that it is has a small profile. I know that there probably are not many reptile owners out there reading this, but if you are, I highly recommend this product!
it's amazing if you don't soak it like some sort of idiot (like me)
March 23, 2017
This is my second scale of this type, and I loved them both. You may be saying, "BUT WAIT, WHY HAVE YOU PURCHASED TWO?!!?." That is a reasonable question. The first scale lasted about 4 years through a dozen falls to the floor and daily abuse. See, I used it every day for weighing my coffee and occasionally for weighing hops for beer making. The first unit finally bit the dust after I overfilled my pour over coffee cup, which thoroughly drenched the unit. It had seen light moisture before, but this was just too much. The new unit was just as accurate, just as small, and just as cheap. It's great.
Very useful scale
March 23, 2017
I use this scale primarily for a postal scale to see if letters or cards need additional postage. I did buy a 500g weight to calibrate properly. The indicator of grams, oz etc. is very small and hard to read but once you learn how it works it does a very good job. Have not used in kitchen yet but am sure I will and should work well especially as you can set it so it ignores the weight of the container used to measure.
Better than expected, uses AAA instead of button batteries, good scale for most uses. American Weigh, Made In China :-)
May 26, 2016
5 star rating because of the value and quality for the price. Better than expected. Plus you gotta love the name "American Weigh," right? Made in China...the American Way.If you need precision, accurate weight for items weighing less than 1/2 gram you're going to want to spend more for a better scale, but this one is accurate within a 1/10 of a gram for items weighing over 1/2 gram (it's just less so when you're trying to weigh something lighter than that) It is important to use good batteries and a level surface in an area without a lot of air movement (like from open windows or fans). I like that it uses AAA batteries instead of those button batteries. For under $10 its a fabulous deal!
Great little scale, even for etsy!
December 6, 2014
This thing is great! I have only had it for a few days, so I cannot attest to long term durability. I am an Etsy seller. I have two young kids, and it is terrible trying to go mail packages at the post office. But I didn't want to spend the money on a postal scale. I know, a whole like twenty bucks, but still. I didn't need a fancy one. Most of my packages are light enough to go first class. Like 5 ounces or less. So I took some advice from someone else and bought a food scale instead. Super cheap. And I am in love. Now I can print directly from my Etsy account. I just weigh it, round up to the next whole ounce, enter it on my etsy page, and print the postage and stick it in my mail box. I now no longer hate shipping days. I would definitely recommend this scale. Great value.

Great for home espresso weighing and kitchen use
May 19, 2016
This is an excellent scale for use in a home kitchen. I bought this scale because it's dimensions fit on top of the drip-tray of my espresso machine (BES870xl, Breville Barista Express) easily and leaves room for an espresso or cappuccino cup.The only draw-backs for using this for home-espresso brewing is it does not easily accommodate a portafilter, as the surface area of the scale is a bit small. However, I work around this by placing a small plate on top of the scale, and placing the portafilter on top of that, and then taring everything out before I weigh the portafilter with espresso in it. The other draw-back is that the scale has an auto-off feature that seems like it happens too quickly. If you tare your scale, walk away for a moment, by the time you come back, most likely the scale will have turned itself off to save battery, so you will have to turn it back on, and re-tare / re-weigh things. This can be avoided by just using it when you need it, and not letting it sit around for too long.Overall, a great scale for the price, you can't go wrong!
... months now to weigh food items and am very satisfied with my purchase
March 17, 2016
Been using this scale for almost two months now to weigh food items and am very satisfied with my purchase. Didn't need to calibrate it. I tried testing it's calibration when I received it using stacks of nickels and it was on point. My only complaints are-it turns off on its own when the weight hasn't changed for a while, which is a good battery saving feature, however I think the timer is a little too short and sometimes I lose the information from what I tared because it shut off.-It measures up to a tenth of a gram, but really i'd say it's probably only accurate to 0.2g. When I weigh out coffee, I can pour small increments of coffee on to the scale and the weight won't change, but if I lift container the coffee goes in and put it back down, it will increase by about 0.1g usually.Overall, very satisfied with the purchase and 0.2g accuracy is good enough for my needs.
Some units require 1Kg weight for calibration, the display will tell you.
January 19, 2015
------------CALIBRATION WARNING---------------It's a good scale but the documentation is either wrong or there's a batch of the BL-1KG-BLK that have the wrong calibration weight programmed. At the time of this writing (1-20-15), the current amazon description and the unit's own docs say to calibrate the BL-1KG-BLK with a 500 gram weight. The scale itself tells you to use a 1000gram weight for calibration when you put it in calibrate mode. I can confirm that the scale is correct and I had to use 1Kg of weight to calibrate it properly. once I figured this out, the scale works awesome and it's a great little scale. I'm sure Amazon will fix its description soon and the docs as well.Workaround: If you already bought the 500kg weight, go ahead and calibrate the scale using it, although the scale will now think that 500gram is 1kg. Then use coins in a cup (or as another user pointed out, water in a water bottle) and place it on the scale and fill it until it reads 1000 grams just like it would do when you place your 500 gram weight on the improperly calibrated scale. Once you've matched your 500 gram weight, just put the purchased 500gram weight in the cup with the coins or on top of the water bottle and now you have a 1Kg weight to properly calibrate the scale. Not super scientific, but since a 1Kg weight generally costs more than this scale, maybe it'll save you a few bucks.Other than that little snafu, the scale is a good value.

December 11, 2014
This is a very nice scale. I have been using it to weigh parts and accessories for RC models. The measurements seem very accurate, it is nice and compact, and the display is easy to read. Turning it off then on will calibrate it to zero. This is very helpful if you want to place a dish on the scale then measure the weight of what you put into the dish.My only complaint is that it is a fairly tight fit into the storage case and the batteries are easily dislodged. What this means in practice is you have to hold the case upside down gently shake to get the scale out, this causes the batteries to come loose. You then have to open the battery compartment and re-seat the batteries. Not a big deal but a minor design flaw, that is why I only gave it 4 stars. At $8 this is an outstanding deal. I am very happy with my purchase and would buy this product again.
Accurate and Compact
March 3, 2014
Having been forced to go gluten-free recently, but still wanting to bake, I bought this for measuring dry ingredients (weigh, not volume, being critical in gluten-free cooking. My wife and I have been more than satisfied with the scale's performance the past few month. Although it is compact, you don't give up on features. It is almost too small for some of our measuring cups and equipment - so you may want to take into consideration what you are using it for and perhaps buy a bigger one if necessary. A minor quibble, though.
Simple, sturdy, PORTABLE.
January 11, 2014
This thing is so small! It reminds me of one of those square puck pagers they give you when you're waiting to be seated at a restaurant. You could easily stick this in your purse or pocket if you are that anal about measuring your food that you need to bring it with you. Or, ya know, if you sell drugs or something. LOL.I don't plan on bringing it around with me, but I like that I can slip it in a drawer or leave it on the counter and it takes up almost no space. It's just a little bit bigger than a coaster.Tested it out of the box and it was spot on calibrated. Love the plastic little cup it comes in that you can use as a tray to measure things. EASY EASY EASY to switch from grams to ounces. Also really easy to tare.My major complaint was that the instructions didn't explain how to get the little screen to pop out. You are supposed to push and it clicks out. I tried and it wouldn't do it. Finally I yanked it and it did, but I almost broke it. You aren't supposed to have to pull it. Also be careful because that are TWO clear plastic trays, one deep one that it sits in, and one that clips on the top, so you have to remove both of those before you pop open the display. The blue display was flickering and didn't seem the greatest, but hey, for ten bucks, this thing works for simple food measuring. I bought one of a similar price at Walmart and it never worked. I like the digital way better than a dial scale. It seems more reliable (even if it isn't). :)))

I really like this scale for the price I paid
February 28, 2017
I really like this scale for the price I paid, but when using it near its upper weight limit, say above 800 grams, it tends to "lose" weight.. meaning that if I put something on the scale that weighs more than 800g it starts to slowly dip until it settles in the 775 range.
Great General Purpose/Food Scale
June 16, 2016
Great for weighing food quantities. Can be set to oz, gm, grn, etc. Personally, I just leave it set to grams. I use it to divide up and weigh dry spices and powders. Because it will weigh up to 1Kg (about 2.2 lbs), it can be used to weigh liquids up to about a quart (actually a liter). Resolution is 0.1g which is adequate for most things. If you need greater resolution, there is a 100g scale that can resolve to 0.01g. The deck is a little small for weighing letters and certainly large envelopes, but I also use mine for weighing small boxes I'm shipping.Overall, a good value and accurate enough, without calibration, for most uses.
Good Scale to measure Small amounts
April 27, 2016
American Weigh Scales AWS-1KG-BLK Signature Series Black Digital Pocket Scale, 1000 by 0.1 GI needed a scale to be able to accurately measure supplements. I buy just about everything in bulk so I needed to be able to know exactly how much of each item I was placing into my pre and post workout mixes. A lot of the scales are only good to measure per gram. I wanted something that could measure a 10th of a gram. So after researching for a while I bought this one. It’s good but surprisingly small. At first I thought it would be too small but once I started using it, I realized the size is great. It works very well and is accurate. It also has a tare button so I don’t have to start over for each item. I can just tare it and continue adding things until I am done.Star Rating: When I do a review I always start out with 5 stars ★★★★★. Then if there is something wrong I will deduct one star and explain why. This way I’m not just arbitrarily picking a number. I gave this 4 stars because it works very well. The only thing that is missing is way to measure things on top like a small tray. I use a small plastic bowl because putting things directly onto the scale is cumbersome due to its small size.I do NOT ever give good feedback for bad products. Rest assured my reviews are honest. If you have any questions about this product or my review, please do not hesitate to ask. I can help you determine if this will fit your needs. Thanks for reading.
Great scale
October 3, 2015
First: No return policy! None. The scale is very accurate for its designed purpose. As its max weight is 1000.0 g (35.27 oz). It will not weigh to two places after the decimal (in grams). I put a 50.0 g weight on it and it measures it at 49.9 g, which it is a good accuracy for this scale. The manual even says not to bother with calibrating it unless it is more than 0.2 off. This is a pretty great digital scale considering the price. I'm giving it a 4/5 because of the no return policy. So make sure this is what you want before purchasing. Here's a pdf of the manual: http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/81CxeBLYORS.pdfI myself am now looking into a more precise scale, and if that's what your looking for as well, consider the "Portable 300g 0.01g Electronic Balance" by Luckystone. It has the two decimal points in grams and the limit is 300, not just 100. Or "Jewelry scale, TBBSC Weigh High Precision Digital Scale Pocket 500g/0.01g"
Good, reliable, but one small flaw.
October 23, 2014
I purchased this scale several months ago and overall it works well. it has held its calibration well. it is quick and accurate. the only issue i had, and the reason i gave 4 rather than 5 stars, is that as i add material to the plate regardless if it is just the plate or a boat that is zeroed out, it registers .1 grams, to .9 grams fine. then when there is precisely 1 gram of material on it, it shows 0.0 grams. then when you continue to add material, it shows from 1.1 to whatever. this is not a huge deal, which is why im still happy with my purchase. but it was a bit irritating when it first happened. i didn't know what the problem was. i have solved it easily by adding a standard nickel to the material, which should always weigh up as 5 grams. then i simply subtract 5 from the end weight.
Very cute and tiny - not sure what to use it for.
February 21, 2014
I bought one of these not really knowing what I am going to use it for.I guess if you have some gold jewelry you want to sell it might come in handy.Others might use It to measure food portions or illegal substances.I guess you can weigh small parcel to figure out the cost if shipping it.It is very cute and functions as described.Maybe next time I go out on a blind date with someone that I realize I don't like - I'll pull it out (get your mind our of the gutter, I meant the scale) and weight a small bag of baking soda that I introduce from my pocket....and without saying a word just put it back in my pocket. If my date asks me what that was - I will honestly reply "baking soda"That will take care of that :)

It's so annoying because I need a brand new scale to be ...
March 10, 2016
Shipped fast but it was missing a bottom piece. The plastic square that would come in handy if you're scaling small increments. I realized it would make my old scale a little more accurate after calibration. The scale I was sent wouldn't work unless I calibrated so I did just that and I tested it by putting on a dollar bill and at first it was accurate which comes out to 1 gram, then I doubled check to see if it would remain that way and unfortunately it's been off by .1 and when I use a nickle which is 5 grams it comes out to 4.7 , 4.8. It's so annoying because I need a brand new scale to be as accurate as possible. To work the way it's supposed to work and not have to constantly recalibrate only for it to still be inaccurate. I might just have to return it when I have time
Nifty design but poor build quality lead to me getting a refund.
January 31, 2016
Pros: Very compact, attractive, blue LED readout is cool, cheap, good scale resolution (0.1 g is what I was looking for).Cons: The readout is built in to a little spring-loaded flip-out tab that you click to release/lock. Nifty at first and makes it more compact but ultimately annoying to me. I just want the display in front of me without any extra effort. Also another thing that could potentially break down the line. Blue LED readout cool yes, but not so easy to read. Ultimately what killed it for me is that it wobbled on my perfectly flat kitchen counter. You do not want this for a scale, especially one that requires pushing buttons all the time. And the tare feature worked inconsistently. So I got a refund and now looking for another one. I suppose this scale is best for someone running around who needs something compact and weighs very small items.
Works okay as long as you don't care to calibrate it.
May 11, 2015
It is a nice little scale. Unfortunately AWS does not know what their products specifications are. The BL-1KG scale requires a 1000g calibration weight even though the user guide specifies a 500g weight. So we have a scale that can weigh objects fairly accurately, but can not be calibrated to be even more accurate. So I bought a calibration weight which is almost expensive as the scale itself which can not be used for anything more than a paperweight. It is possible that different lot numbers have different requirements which AWS does not know or care about.I do like the feature that it can weigh in grams, ounces, Troy ounces, and Pennyweight. And it has a tare setting to allow a small container to be pre-zeroed to discount is weight, and just weigh its contents.
Calibration issues...
April 18, 2015
I just received my scale and although the description says that it comes pre-calibrated, mine did not. This is more of a nuisance than anything else, so I knocked off only one star for that.Next, as some of the questions/comments mention, there is a difference between what the documentation and the scale call for in order to actually calibrate it. The documentation says 500g and the scale asks for 1000g. Another star off for that. Then I borrowed some calibration weights (two 500g weights) from a friend. I calibrated the scale with both to 1000g...as directed by the LED on the scale. I then tested the scale with a nickle, it was reading 2.5g (half of what it should read). Now, it's possible that the calibration weights are wrong, but they both have "500g" stamped on them. So I re-calibrated the scale again with only one of the 500g weights. Now a nickle correctly weights 5g. I didn't take another star off for this...though I'm tempted too. As I said, I'm borrowing the weights, so I don't know how accurate they are. But I find it strange that they are "off" by exactly half of what the scale is saying. My best guess is that you need to calibrate with 500g and NOT 1000g as the scale says, since that yielded the result of a nickle properly at 5g.I'll use it as is and see how reliable it is. But for now, I'm not too impressed.
Works well... until it doesn't
February 3, 2015
I have two, one lasted about a year and died completely. While it worked it was accurate and handy. The second one is less than 6 months old and is frustrating to use. It "resets", or acts like it shorts out, randomly upon putting any weight on it. So, put one of the trays on it and either turn it on or tare it, then when you put something in the tray, it flickers and resets to 0. I'm often able to remove the item(s) being weighed, and it will simply show the weight as a negative, so still can be used, but like I said, frustrating.I trust them for accuracy when they do work, though.I haven't tried to contact mfr, don't really see the point. Can buy a new one for about $7-8 with prime shipping, and I'm sure they would want me to send these non-working ones back on my dime. If you can get one for under $10 all in, I'd say go for it. Because when they do work, they work pretty well, especially at that price point.
Works But Not as Expected
January 20, 2015
Directions call for 500gr weight, but the scale I received needed 1000gr for manual calibration. Since I ordered the 500gr weight along with it I had to get creative to fix the scale (After calibrating with 500gr weight it was sort of useless).Obviously something is wrong with the product or the included instructions. My scale looks like, and claims to be the model number of the scale described, but does not function according to the directions. It actually flashes the calibration weight 1000gr.The directions also state that it should be calibrated after shipping, and even if it is intended to be used in a geographically different place than where factory calibrated. In general I am not impressed with items that do not work as intended, but after getting creative with the 500gr weight I purchased, and doubling that weight with tungsten I was able to accurately calibrate the scale. Since it works after proper calibration I give it 3 stars. Still, I am not overly impressed with having outsmart a $10 scale just to avoid the hassle of returning.Buyer beware.... your scale may be different than the one here, or require a different calibration weight than expected

Reasonably good ... but could be better!

Good weighing scale. A bit too small for baking needs. I wish the buttons would be a bit bigger/easier to press. Putting a bowl on top of the scale hides the damn buttons!
Did not come with calibration weight
June 15, 2017
Advertised as with calibration weight. Did not come with calibration weight. I should have ordered the one without the weight for a lower price. I recommend you do too.
Not as accurate as I'd like
August 7, 2016
Decent scale but it tends to come up with a different weight every time I weigh the same item. It only changes by like .2-.5 grams but it's still very annoying when you are trying to be precise. Also, after putting something on it and zeroing it out, it will change the weight of what I zeroed out. Very frustrating. I thought it might be because it was getting old but I bought a new one and same problems. Oh well, it is pretty cheap and gets the job done.
Toss the included batteries, might not work with NiMH rechargeables
January 23, 2016
Ordered this... then it sat on my counter for the better part of a month. When I finally got around to trying it out I couldn't get it to turn on with the included 'God Camel' (TM) brand "Extra Heavy Duty" batteries. Quick check on the voltmeter showed one of the batteries was DOA... nbd I've got tons of nice NiMH AAA batteries... but those don't seem to make it wake up either. So rather than return a doodad barely worth the postage I decided to rip it apart. I expected to see a bunch of scabby solder joints and loose wires but it's actually a pretty nicely put together bit of kit. The main brains of the show is potted so can't really tell what the part is. The scale itself though seems to be a resistive force or strain gauge with a 4 wire connection to the hidden brain box. Solder joints and components all seem to be well connected. So why won't mine turn on?I probably should have guessed before I ripped it apart but... most micro controllers run on a little more than 3V which is just about what two alkaline AAA's in series put out. My NiMH rechargeables only put out about 1.2V each, or 2.4V together, which isn't enough to turn on the doodad. I don't have any landfiller batteries but I do have a 3.3V power supply. Hooked that up and it worked right away. Lesson learned... keep some alkalines around to try before ripping stuff apart.
better shop elsewhere
October 18, 2015
Seems a little inaccurate. I followed the simple steps to calibrate, using the 500 gram weight I also purchased. That works just as described. Then I turned the scale, then on again, and weighed the 500 gram weight: 499.9 grams. I did this several times, got the same result each time. So either the weight or the scale is inaccurate. As the scale is so inexpensive, I'm guessing it's the culprit.Accuracy to a quarter of a gram, rather than a tenth, is all I need. But if you need accuracy to a tenth of the gram, better shop elsewhere.
Just ok
November 21, 2012
i have two of these, one works, one doesn't. At the time I placed the order, the scale didn't have that flip top cover, but they sent me the one with the flip top cover anyhow. It would have been fine, but it didn't seem to weigh accurately. I complained to Amazon, and was sent the actual one I ordered instead & it weighs perfectly. I think they are the very same scale with just a minor upgrade with the flip top screen thingy. The only gripe with the one that works is that you have to weigh immediately after turning it on because otherwise you can sit there & just watch the numbers go down without putting anything on the scale. Strange, but turning it off then back on real quick fixes it, just weigh immediately after turning on. Hey, you get what you pay for & I wasn't expecting miracles so I'm very happy with the working one, and not so much with the defective one. I just wanted something to weigh my herbs on after purchasing from the local MMJ dispensaries (& they are always honest, and usually a tad bit extra...woot!).

Works great for a while

Works great for a while, then just breaks down. Ordered 2 now, don't think I will order a 3rd one, went with another brand to try out. Thanks for the use I got out of it while it lasted.

April 9, 2017
I'm sorry to say but I've used this about 3 times and it has stopped working. I put new batteries in and it will not turn on; the reviews are very positive so I think I must have gotten a dud. It's too bad because I need a traveling scale to measure my daughters food intake.
The Blade, an out of the box review.
October 16, 2014
People really love this scale, I bought it because the majority of reviewers felt it worked as advertised. My experience was out of the box, was the size is prefect, with a plastic case for protection. The button panel the pops out from the side felt sturdy. The calibration was not accuate, I have a kitchen weight and it was 7-10 g off. I did recalibrate per the manufacturer's recommendations, but the measurements continued to be off by over 10g compared to my Salter kitchen scale. The scale surface appeared unstable, as depending on where you set a weight, the weight would fluctuate by 3-4g.
Customer Service Failed to make a practical decsion to replace a faulty product - do not recomend
September 25, 2014
I was very disappointed first by the fact that the LCD display started failing before I even went through one set of batteries. Now I understand that "everything made by humans breaks" and would not give a poor review simply because of a defective product. What sealed the (poor) deal for me was that even after very polite e-mails with their customer service in which I included my purchase receipt and a clear photo showing the faulty display, they would not send a replacement unless I shipped them the failed unit. Seeing the cost of postage is roughly equal to the cost of a replacement, that was clear;y a waste of time and money for both them and I. I choose to purchase a similar (and nicer for similar cost) Smart Weigh ACC200 AccuStar Digital Back-lit Touch Screen Pocket Scale 200 x 0.01g Blackand love it so far. I can not recommend doing business with American Weigh Scale.
Did not weigh accurately and drifted terribly
January 18, 2014
I returned the item because it was not accurate. I first tried weighing a few different nickels and they all came up as 3 grams when they should be 5. Also, it drifted a lot. After I tared it, it would slowly drift into the negatives and read about - 2 grams after about a minute.I work in a lab so I took it to work and tried to calibrate it. After calibration it would read correctly, but when it was turned off and back on it was wrong again. I don't really like the way the buttons and display swings out, it makes the whole thing sort of wobbly so when you hit the tare button the whole thing moves.I am thinking i just got a bad one since I am sure these can work what with all the good reviews. Perhaps it was amazon's shotty packaging and the fact that it bounced around in the box all the way to my house. Also the silver plate where you way it sort of looked like it was crooked. Not sure if that was normal or not. Either way, I need a scale that can weigh things at this didn't. I'm not chancing it with ordered another and will order a different one mainly because I don't like how wobbly the thing is.
Not so great...
December 12, 2011
First of all id like to make my intro by saying, I do not trust AWS scales. Sure they are a very popular brand, just about everyone who owns a scale its an AWS. Usually because the good price. And it does kinda work. Just before this scale, I had another AWS. My problem with it was, whatever you wanted to weigh had to be DIRECTLY in the middle. If not it would read zero. The other problem was, if it was a little amount, say under 2g's. It was VERY difficult to get it to weigh properly. This scale, I figured would be better. Maybe my old one was just a defect. WRONG. Exact same problems, except not near as bad on this one. When I opened it, was surprised. A nice leather case, and spring action controls set. Very awesome. I thought this was going to be an amazing scale to last me forever. But eventually, the spring in the back came out of place and broke. Not only that, but as I said before it faced most problems other AWS scales do. If your weighing smaller amounts, it has to be close to the middle of the scale. It also jumps a range of .1 to .3, so your never going to get a PERFECT measurement. However I noticed most of the problems are remedied by putting a cup on the scale, hit TARE, then put your herbs or whatever your weighing into the cup. For the price, unless you know of better scales, this should work. I just regret not looking at other scales before picking this.Edit: Okay guys. Everything you just read. Forget it! I just wouldnt give this scale a chance at all. Basically it still had all these problems. But after a while it would be hard to turn on, id hold the power button nothing. "Rolling" the batteries seemed to do the trick. That only worked so long. I was also changing out batteries thinking they were just draining fast, NO. The scale is junk. It stopped turning on completely. AWS may be a "trusted" name brand. But ive owned 3 of their scales. Every one of them had similar or their own problems. Just a terrible experience.

Very inaccurate in 0.1 gram ranges. Wasted my time.
June 2, 2017
I decided to test the accuracy and consistency of this scale. To do this I first calibrated the scale according to the directions. Then I confirmed the scale was on a flat smooth stable surface. I then weighed a penny, a nickel, a dime and a quarter in sequence. I recorded the individual numbers on a spreadsheet and then I repeated the experiment until I had a total of 20 results, namely, 5 measurements for each of the 4 coins. I found variations in weights for the same coins ranged from 4% - 14%. To me this is a huge variation so I calibrated the scale again and repeated the experiment. Again I found very similar inconsistencies to the point that I have no confidence in this instrument. The variations were great enough that I wanted to call this scale a toy for children. But, I realized with such inconsistent results, a child would not learn properly, so instead I would call it a piece of .... junk .... I gave the unit 2 stars instead of 1 because for heavier masses, maybe it's workable. But when you need single digit gram with the 0.1 accuracy, it's useless.
Corroded battery terminal, but seems to work fine, so far.
September 19, 2015
The scale had clearly been sitting on a shelf somewhere with an old battery in it for some time. One of the terminals shows some corrosion, and there is a big mark where the battery was leaking, which would be obvious to anyone glancing at it. It seems to work fine so far, though, and I don't really feel like going through the hassle of a return at this point.
I Like It Yet Cannot Recommend It As It Does Not Include A Weight
February 28, 2015
Box arrived pristine and undamaged. I opened the packaging and revealed a pristine and undamaged box. Upon opening, I found a visually appealing scale. Usability is easy enough, with the instructions for most major functions being printed on the top of the flip top door. With that said, the scale arrived calibrated incorrectly (a nickel weighed 3.18g) and does not include the required 500g weight to recalibrate. Yet, as stated, the instructions are printed on the door. For convenience. I'll not complain much, as it was my own fault for jumping for the first decent and cheap scale I found. If it included a weight, I'd likely have given it five stars as, from appearance and functionality, it seems to be a useful unit. Without either including the proper weight for convenience calibration....it's a paperweight, unless the proper weight is purchased along with the scale. To be honest, better choices are available.

Horrible scale, doesn't accurately measure!!
July 17, 2016
I am very disappointed with this product. First off, the product I received is not at all like the product pictured. I ordered it last month and finally used it this weekend and didn't realize that it was not the same. I bought it so I could have a scale with me when I am away from the house. It is horrible! It won't zero out and it doesn't hold the measurement and just keeps bouncing the numbers. I can't return it because Amazon says it is a nonreturnable item even though I am within my 30 days. I am very disappointed in this product and purchase through Amazon.
Only weighs when object on scale is being pushed
May 13, 2016
I ordered this small scale to take on a vacation trip. It arrived today and was totally usable. The instruction state that the units can be changed and the change will be retained. Mine didn't! The biggest problem is that the display only shows a reading if the item is slowly being pushed across the pad. As soon as I stop pushing, the display drops back to 0.00. when I tried to return the item, I was informed that it can not be returned. I contacted Amazon customer service and they are going to credit a full refund to my credit card.
Disappointed!
February 23, 2016
The plastic case it comes in came broke, and the metal square its out of place of the plastic base, its not aling...Im regretting buying this.
Cheap
February 9, 2016
Couldn't get the clear case open without prying it open. This will be difficult to do every time I need to weigh my food in a restaurant. There's a loose screw rattling around somewhere inside the unit. I was disappointed and wanted to return this item as soon as I saw how cheaply made it was, but returns are not allowed on this item. Learn from my mistake and choose a higher quality pocket scale.
Keeps losing power while measuring food.
October 23, 2015
This scale worked great the first few times I used it but after two months it stopped working. Even with brand new Duracell batteries it goes to sleep while I am measuring my food meaning I have to start over and possibly throw out the combined ingredients. I am on a special diet where I have to measure all of my food. I bought this for use when I am away from home so I only use it every once in a while. I do not recommend this scale at all. My best guess about what the problem is is that the place where the batteries go is a little too large for the AAA batteries. They keep slipping out of place just enough for the scale to lose power. I am constantly having to push them back into place to get it turn on again. I am going to buy a different scale.
Out of the Box: Does Not Work

Turns on. Does not weight. Useless piece of plastic, too cheap to even be worth shipping back.

No
August 15, 2017
The scale got the most important aspect wrong. I needed to weigh e-juice but it kept on turning off which made it fustrateing. The darn thing only stayed on for 1 minute at any given time. I would shake my bottle trying to beat the minute turn off and never did so it was a total waste of money. I closing, I'll end up buying another one to that will stay on period, till I shut it off.
Cool until it stops working
April 12, 2017
I loved it until it stopped working a month or two ago. Literally only had it for two or three months before it crapped out.
Its useless. Arrived broken
January 2, 2017
NOWHERE does it say that this item cannot be returned!! I would have NEVER bought this thing! Its useless. Arrived broken, and now i cannot return it for a working one. Since when is this Amazon's practice? Screen backlight turns on, but no digits appear. Does not work properly. Do not waste your time, and do not buy this!
DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY
January 1, 2017
DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY! Product did not work out of the box. Even after calibrating scale, I will weigh something let's say, 10grams. I take it off the scale and put it back on to check, usually is anywhere from 1.5grams to 3 grams off. Of course you can't return it anyways. Don't waste your time
Leaky battery
January 14, 2016
This item arrived with a leaky battery and what appears to be a toxic residue. I received a replacement item, which wouldn't even turn on. Completely unusable and defective.
Extra instructions for DOA
August 15, 2015
I wasn't surprised when the $9 scale was DOA. So, like anything else from China I planned on having to fix it once it arrived. After locating the screws hidden under the display sticker I finally got the POS open. And as expected, there was the main power wire just hanging out, not connected to the main board. Apparently giving a wire you just soldered a little tug is too much too ask. Although any small wires like this are difficult to solder, this one wasn't the worst I've seen but if you do not have a fine tip soldering iron and some skill not destroying tiny soldering points, you may want to pass. Then, if successful, have some extra AAA batteries on hand cause the ones included and labeled "God camel" surprisingly, don't work. I have not had much time to test the accuracy of the scale, spent too much time getting it to turn on.FYI I did not contact the seller, small dollar items like this are not worth the hassle of returning, just to get another dead unit.
