AWESOME Energy saver and True Variable speed pump!:)
August 12, 2017
Awesome Pump!:) I was a bit hesitant at first but after doing some ok lots of research on variable speed pumps I went with the Hayward Max-Flo 2302vsp, it's a true variable speed pump not just a multiple speed pump like some others. This pump is SUPER quiet, and on the lower settings of about 1500rpm or lower, I can't hear it running. I have a 14,000-gallon saltwater pool and am so thankful for this pump, at 1,000 rpm it pumps 40gpm and draws 74 watts/.3125 amps WOW! That's just under a 75w light bulb!!! It has 3 separate timers which can be set to whatever speed you want. The pump comes set up for 1-1/2" or 2" ready fittings and took about 30 min to install. The icing on the cake is my utility company APS offers a rebate for these energy efficient pumps. I have been using it a month now, have no problems and time will tell but it has a 1 yr warranty and is SUPER!(my old single speed pump draws 10a/2400watts HUGE SAVINGS!)
Great output and electricity savings
October 18, 2016
So far so good... I've had this pump for a few months now and I really like the output and power saving features. Easy to hookup for a DYIer if you have some Spencerian with plumbing and basic wiring. If this is a new installation, play it safe and get an electrician to run the lines from your panel so you are up to code.
So far so good. Easy to install and easy to program
August 27, 2016
So far so good. Easy to install and easy to program. I replaced a 2.5 HP pump with this one on my 30000+ gallon pool. I did have to close one of my skimmers so that the one that remains open pulls debris in quickly. Also, I have to run it at leadt 2700 rpm (about 700Watts) to pull in debris quickly. I run it about 6 hours at at 2400 rpm (about 400 Watts) and then 2700 pm for about 1 hour a day and it keeps the pool clean.
We are very happy with the pump so far
October 23, 2015
We ordered this pump on a Sunday as our old pool pump bearings went out and had a awful sound. Surprised the neighbors didn't call the police for disturbing the peace! Amazon had it to my home on that Tuesday. I shopped local pool supply companies and they were over $200 more. Well worth the 2 days to save a couple of hundred dollars. $20 dollars in PVC fittings and pipe and I installed myself that Wednesday. Our local power company is coming out next week as this pump qualifies for a rebate with them. We are very happy with the pump so far, quite and like the features as I do not have to use the time clock from our old pump. Very easy to program with 3 separate settings for the running speed and time of day.
Buy this pump now!

I am extremely happy with this pool pump. I had a Hayward super pump that was making noise and not working well all summer. It finally died (likely a bad bearing in motor) and at first I was inclined to just get another motor for that pump. I am very glad that I didn't. This pump is amazing. Very quiet and powerful. Extremely smooth. I have found by having it start at full speed then taper down to about 1500 rpm and run thru daylight hours is perfect. The best thing is that after the fact I found my utility company provides a $400 rebate here in MD. So with the rebate, this modern marvel of a pump cost me about the say as if I would have just replaced the motor on the old pump. This is a no brainer. Amazon has best price. A few other companies have variable speed pump, but this is the best value for the $. Buy it.
Perfect little giant.

Installation was super easy.Didn't fit directly to my current piping, but I knew that before I made my purchase. I am no electrician, but this literally took me 30 minutes to wire. I did get a little confused as to whether keep my current timer. I watched a YouTube video of a guy doing an install on the same model and he used an analog timer which was similar to the one on my old pump. However, an additional timer is not needed, this bad boy comes with it's own timer. Needless to say I removed my old rusty timer off my wall.I am planning on running this thing 15 hours a day only because I have palm trees that are constantly dirtying my pool. 3 hours on max (3000 RPM), 5 hours on medium ( 2100 RPM) and 7 hours on a lower setting (1400 rpm). You can set whatever RPM speeds you desire. I did find that anything below 1200 RPM seemed to be not enough to move the water in my pool. My pool size is about 17,000 gallons. The noise level on this thing is amazingly low even on the highest setting I cannot hear the pump running unless I am close to it. at 2100 RPM you have to stand about 5 feet away to hear it and even then it's low. At 1400 RPM you literally have to put your hand on the pump to make sure it's operating. Night and day compared to my single over-sized (2hp) speed pump.I will update on my energy savings when I get a good idea how much money this thing will save me.(UPDATE)After a few weeks of evaluation I'd thought I'd give an update. My only regret is that I didn't swap my old pump sooner. My electric bill has been estimated at $90.00 down from $136.00 the previous month. I did end up changing some settings such as running for 10 hours only and running my low speed at 2100 rpm and high speed at 3000 rpm. I found that running at 2100 RPM for 8 hours and 2 hours at 3000 RPM is more than enough to circulate my water to keep my pool happy and clean. I've also made sure that I was running within SRP's off peak hours to minimize cost. Conclusion: I am saving roughly 40 dollars a month in electricity, my pump is quite, it was easy to install, and I didn't have to change my lifestyle to save money, I changed to a variable speed pump.THUMBS UP!

Tough to program, but very efficient!
August 7, 2017
Not very easy to program, but definitely does it's job WELL! As a side note, my electric bill has dropped dramatically since installing this (to the tune of about $80 a month over my old pump). It's basically already paid for itself!

Work good, not enough HP for my pool and spa. (20k glns)
Very efficient!
September 24, 2016
I purchased this pump to replace my 1hp Hayward single speed pump. I have a 12,000 gal standard pool with 2" suction line and 1.5" returns. I installed the pump about 10 days ago.ProsThe pump is amazingly efficient. At full speed it move more water then my old pump and uses 44% less power. My old pump used 1,800 watts this pump uses 985 watts at full speed and pumps more water. I decided to run the pump primarily at 1100 RPM for 16 hours a day and at 2400 RPM for one hour. At 1100 RPM it draws less them 100 watts and moves more then enough water to opperate the skimmer and main drain. That comes to well under $100 a year in electricity and a much cleaner pool. The motor and pump appear to be well built. The built in controler allows for upto 3 different speed settings at any time of the day.The pump is very quietThe built it quick connect plumping connections are good quality and make mounting easy.ConsThe pump developed a tiny almost inaudible squealing above 2000 RPM a few days after startup. It's make my wonder if maybe it has a defective bearing that going to give me problems later. The motor controler doesn't have a cover. It is water resistant but I still would be concerned about mounting the pump in direct sunlight or rain.
Three Thumbs Up!
August 9, 2016
So far I am very impressed with this pump. It is amazingly quite compared to my 6 yo Challenger and the speed options allow me to get better cleanup. At high speed the flow is as good as the old Challenger pump and the lower speeds save on operating costs. The on-board controller allowed me to ditch the only Intermatic mechanical timer which was flakey. It's also very light and has a smaller overall footprint. However, this is not a true variable speed pump. It has three set speeds which you can program to run at specific times and durations. The permanent magnet motor should provide many years of trouble-free service unlike induction motors. Just a note that I paid $565 (or there about) and now it's down to $500. While there is a newer model, this is a great price for a name-brand VS (three-speed) pump. If your pump is 5+ yrs old I suggest you consider buying this one while it's still available.
It was easy to install myself and trust me
August 30, 2015
Works well, I think it saves money. I won't be able to really tell until the winter hits because of my A/C that runs most of the day. its quite and has three settings to program to. It was easy to install myself and trust me, if it was easy for me it's easy for you.
without these simple changes I would not recommend but with these changes I highly recommend
March 22, 2015
I installed the earlier model of this same pump for my girlfriend and this model for my home. They made some simple improvements which make this pump a worthy consideration. The previous model had threaded pipe connections which where sloppy and no Teflon tape would seal. This model has corrected that problem with unions, no leaks, no air! The other change is now the run times are in the pump software and no external timer is required. without these simple changes I would not recommend but with these changes I highly recommend. Easy setup and I mine has been online for two months. Much better than the previous model of this same pump. Plus now the control panel can be rotated for better access. So far very pleased with this model.

No good for auto pool cleaner.
August 18, 2016
Decent pump to lower your power bill, but not enough power at highest speed to get automatic pool cleaner to run. Not enogh suction to keep cleaner on the walls. When cleaner attempts to turn or climb the walls, it just flips over and will not right itself.Using a high quality automatic pool cleaner. Before with a 1 speed, 1hp pump, I couldnt keep cleaner in the pool. It would travel right up the wall andMy advice, step up to 2 or 2-1/2 hp if you want to use your automatic cleaner.
Good pump but Hayward avoids honoring warranty.
July 13, 2016
Good pump but Hayward does not want to honor warranty. My skimmer lid cover is leaking some air, the pump is two months old, and they are not interested in sending a replacement unless I have a service call made - which will cost me more for an hour than a new skimmer cover. Hayward doesn't care.

My pool looks dirtier than ever. It on all day and does not flow all the debris. A lot settles to ground and is staining pool floor. The machine is very quiet
Wrong Manual on a otherwise probably great pump.
August 12, 2015
I got this pump and it is working fine, however the manual does not match the electronics on the pump. I received in the package the Rev A manual but actually it should be either Rev B or Rev C. I downloaded the Rev C from the web-site but it still does not match what the display is doing - but it is closer then Rev A included in the box. Rev C shows on page 15 that V1 only needs a speed setting when in program mode, but you also have to do the time setting. And who got the strange idea of running the pump from V3 down to V1? Programming has to be done from V1 up - why is the pump running from V3 down? Like I said strange. The pump runs nicely and quit once you figure everything out - I understand when buying Chinese stuff that the manual is bad - but does this has to happen now on US built equipment?

Too soon to tell, but right off it doesn't have the power of my 1HP super pump. It wouldn't self prime, although it said it would pull upwards of 7 feet. I'm not quite 4 feet. It is functional, quiet, and the timer function is nice. I'll let you know how it goes.
How do you figure out how it works !!!
June 14, 2015
The pump works great and is extremely quiet. However. the instructions on how to operate the pump are TERRIBLE!! They give you a quick reference guide on how to program it to get it started and that's it. They don't tell you what to do if you have a power outage,, or how to operate the pump outside of the times that you have programmed, such as what do you do when you turn on your spa, or turn off your spa and get back to the programmed cycles. Someone really dropped the ball on providing a "Complete and Simple " operations manual. Trying to get a few questions answered from the Hayward tech team but haven't heard anything from them yet. I've used many Hayward Pool products over the years and had no problems what so ever. This one needs some strong attention from their tech team !!!

First off the Pump is good. Quiet
September 16, 2016
First off the Pump is good. Quiet, good power performance from it. Works really well..... 2 Stars you ask? Bought this in May 2015. Halfway through the 2016 season, stops doing what it's supposed to do ... Pump!. Power to the unite but no response from the damn thing, appears to be a control board issues, Haywards idea of customer service is.. Here's a list of Platinum support people, they should be able to help you..... Be prepared to have an arm and a leg amputated to pay for the service, My previous pump was 15 years old and, so while a variable speed pump sounds good and saves you money, if this is there idea of being eco friendly, then it's blatantly wrong!.
Stay away.
July 12, 2016
This is not all that it is cracked up to be. I will never buy a Hayward product again. The first few days it was quiet, but as time went on the motor became nosier. It now sounds like a bearing is about to go on the shaft of fan, like a very fast clicking sound above 2000 RMP. Take heed and do not get suckered in. These vendors want you to pay $100 dollars to send it back..

October 6, 2015
About once a week I have to press the reset button to get the pump going again. Any glitch in the power such as a storm puts this pump into an error mode and it shuts itself off until you press the reset button. When the pool starts looking green you can bet its this pump that is causing it.
Doesn't really pump as much as a standard 1.5 horse power pump even at high speed.
August 6, 2015
I purchased this variable speed pump to replace my 1.5 horse power standard pump to save a few dollars on electricity. According the add this pump is 1.5 horse power at full speed but compared to the pump I replaced it next came close to the 1.5 horse power pump that I had. Also this pump even at top speed doesn't have enough power/water flow to operate with my pool chlorinator or pool vacuum correctly. Now I have to purchase a new pump. I guess this would work for someone who needs a small pump or have a smaller pool. My pool is around a 21,000 gallon.

Very disappointed in a product that has a very good name
October 7, 2017
This pump can is very efficient however it has proven to be unreliable. I purchased the fist one in Dec 2015. It lasted just over a year and the motor failed. I tried to get a replacement motor, but they do not sell them separately, so I purchased the second one January 2017 from Amazon. The pump was installed professionally and was checked every week by our pool maintenance company. We just found out that the motherboard appears to be defective on the new unit. So it has cost me about $100 a month to use this pump. The warranty says it's only for 90 days. Very disappointed in a product that has a very good name. Additionally if you walk into a repair shop and tell them that you have a Hayward pump, the company assumes that you have a tree that grows money in your backyard and soaks you for repair.

July 26, 2017
I have a 22,000 gallon pool with a spa. This pump did not push enough water to have sparkling water. I had a lot of water problems the two years I used this pump. I guess just not enough power. It was the same hp as my last one. But, I was told by the Hayward representative that this pump would not be the one to buy if you have a spa attached to your pool.
DO NOT BUY! JUNKKKK
May 18, 2017
Ive owned this for 2 years. First two years great, but now it says Error 64 which means the computer circuitry needs to be replaced. you have to replace motor and circuitry which is more than the pump brand new. DO NOT BUY!!!!! Hayward is worthless also, they cannot be reached by phone.
Purchased this pump and it worked great, for 18 months
January 18, 2017
Purchased this pump and it worked great, for 18 months. very disappointed it just stopped working and the warranty is only for one year. Replacement pump search is on now. Will not purchase this product again!
Flow Too Low Bro Fo Sho
August 10, 2016
I bought this to replace a 1.5 Hp Pentair Whisperflo pump. While both pumps are 1.5 Hp the Hayward pump produced about 35 GPM less at full speed than pump it replaced and my filter pressure was 8 psig compared to 16 psig with the Pentair pump . My Jets in my spa were weak and my skimming and vacuuming were significantly reduced. After realizing this I compared the pump curves for Hayward and Pentair. The Pentair Pumps produce a significantly higher GPM for the same Hp........so go with a Pentair pump if you are concerned about not having enough flow.
Buy A Different Pump
April 18, 2016
This product would have received 0 stars if I would have been allowed. I purchased one of these last year. I failed in less than a year. While I am waiting for it to be repaired, I purchased another. It failed in less than a month. I would not recommend that anyone purchase this pump. It is not the sellers fault. The problem is with the electronics that control the motor, and you can't run the motor without the electronics.
