and we loved it so much that we tried to find one ...
August 15, 2017
Some friends of ours had purchased this exact trash can from a brick and mortar store, and we loved it so much that we tried to find one for ourselves. When we couldn't find one locally, I checked Amazon. This trash can replaced our old stainless steel step trashcan, which we had for over ten years. This one is significantly better, with some exceptional features:- It is super lightweight, which means that we can move it around with ease even if it has trash inside- The lid locks in place to keep my dogs out of the trash. While I was slightly skeptical of this feature, let me just say... IT WORKS! My dogs knocked the entire trashcan over in an attempt to get to the goodies inside and it remained securely latched.- The soft-close feature means that it doesn't slam down every time you close the can.- And my absolute favorite feature... a 13-gallon standard kitchen trash bag fits securely around the rim, so we never have food or trash falling down under the bag and making a nasty mess in the bottom of the can. And I have teenagers who smash and slam trash inside... but it's still clean as a whistle underneath!I can't recommend this trashcan enough. I paid full price for it and would again in a heartbeat. I'm actually thinking about getting a second one to put in our garage!
Inexpensive trashcan with impressive features
March 9, 2017
I never thought I'd get excited over a trash can, but I love this can. For the past several years, I have been using a very expensive electric / battery powered touchless stainless steel tall kitchen can. It worked great for the first few years, and then gradually over time, the lid had more trouble rising and stayed up for only a couple of seconds, so I decided I was going to go low tech this time and buy a can that had a foot pedal. If you are reading this review, you are doing exactly what I did. I wanted a decent can at a reasonable price that got good reviews from people not paid or incentivized by the manufacturer to review them. I paid full price for this can, which I bought from Amazon, and my opinion is totally unbiased.I wish I had bought this can earlier. It's light weight, but sturdy. The only negative I found was what others experienced: you have to really press down to get the lid to lock on to the can, but it's doable with little fuss as long as you understand that. It's the only assembly required. The can came in a really large box with a lot of packing material, which was wasteful. It also came with the lid propped on the top of the can -- just not attached. It seems like it would be easy for the manufacturer to just attach the lid at the factory if it is going to be shipped with the lid on top of it instead of having a lot of reviewers complain about problems they encountered attaching the lid. Easy fix and the only negative. The can comes with a supply of bags made to fit and you can order more from the manufacturer, but the great news is that any standard 13 gallon tall kitchen garbage bag will work just fine. For some reason, I thought there was a ring or rim to secure and cover the bags, but there is not. The fit is tight enough and secure enough that you just turn the top of the bag over the rim of the can and it easily holds in place, and you really can't see the bag because most of it is covered by the lip of the lid.To open the can, press the foot pedal. The lid will stay open several seconds and then slowly close by itself. If you want the lid to stay open, pull it open by hand instead of using the foot pedal, and then close it manually when you are ready. Easy. This can will not sit flush with the wall because there is a small bumper in the back that allows for the space needed for the lid to open fully, so be aware of that when making location decisions based on size. You'll need to allow a couple of inches of clearance from the wall.I have a large puppy who is interested in everything, including the trash. My favorite thing about this can is that you can lock the lid shut. Push the silver locking mechanism toward the back of the can to lock and pull it toward you to unlock. The lock will hold even if you tip the can over. Now, I don't have to worry about my dog getting into the trash anymore. The matte finish on the can means no fingerprints (or nose prints), so you won't be constantly wiping it down. I wish I had bought this can years ago.
Worth The Price; A Quality Product
March 31, 2016
While the idea of writing a review of a trash can sounds a bit absurd, this one deserves a review...and a good one. Probably, like most people, I've never really given much thought to what kind of trash can I use, until I bought this one. It's more expensive than any trash can I've ever purchases, $50, but it's worth the money spent. It's sturdy, lid works well, has a locking lid (if needed), and the bags fit well. It uses an 13 gallon size bags, but the company also sells it's own brand (I buy the less expensive ones from a local source that work just as well). I'd recommend this trash can should you be looking for one that's of good quality and it's a bit fashionable, too. Now, that's something I never thought I'd say about a freakin' trash can.
For the love of a garbage can
November 24, 2015
If it's possible to fall madly and deeply in love with a waste disposal system, then I have done it. Every once in awhile, my husband walks through the kitchen and catches me staring dreamily at my two, perfectly intact trash cans and sighs. He won't admit it, but I can tell he's a little jealous. These trash cans have changed my life.Four years ago, I got a puppy. A very destructive puppy who grew into a very destructive dog with an appetite for all things smelly and disgusting. Poop. Trash. Sweaty socks. This dog is infamous for getting into our trash cans and eating whatever he can grab first. We had been forced to stack our trash cans on top of each other just to keep him out. In order to throw anything away, you had to lift the top can, holding it up out of his reach while positioning yourself between him and the lower can so you can try and sneak your garbage into it. It was exhausting. And rather physically demanding. When I saw these trash cans on the internets, I was a little skeptical. This dog can destroy anything. I wasn't sure they would stand up to his appetite for desctruction. To my delight, they have! The locking lids actually keep his fat little face out of there! I can't tell you how wonderful it is to know that I won't be coming home to garbage strewn about my home anymore. These trash cans are the absolute best. Just don't ask my husband. He's still trying to compete.
The mocha color is really nice. It closes quietly and locks shut
April 14, 2015
This is a fabulous trash can! The mocha color is really nice. It closes quietly and locks shut. I would like to address the issue people have with it moving when it is opened and scratching the wall behind it. There is a "wall bumper" on the back of the can that swings up and locks into place (We thought it was a handle at first). When the bumper is against the wall the trash can doesn't move and the hinge doesn't scratch the wall. It feels very sturdy. Mine had a sticker on the bumper that identified it's use. While this is an expensive trash can it is very attractive, closes quietly, and locks to keep animals and small children out. Highly recommend!
13 gallon bags DO fit! - (and it's the best trash bin to date)
March 8, 2013
We had first looked at the auto-sensing trash bins (we are technology buffs), but since our bin sits next to our pantry door we figured a sensor would "auto-open" every time we opened the pantry door itself. Glad we decided on this instead, since it is a perfect balance of style, price, and function.About 2 other reviewer's comments:I read another reviewer's post about "13 gallon bags not fitting" but we've tried several brands and they all fit just fine. Currently we buy a huge roll of standard trash bags from target for $4 and have no issues. I will say that you do have to stretch the top 1/2" to fit the bag over the rim, but I believe that is by design because it holds there perfectly. The bags never tear at the rim, and the bags never sag into the can.Another reviewer also said the top of the lid flopped about every time they pressed the pedal down, and would never close correctly. I think this is because, when the can arrives it is already connected to the base via the lifting bar that extends up the back from the pedal. What the other reviewer failed to realize (most likely), is that the lid still has two clips on it that need to be snapped into place once you receive it. Once attached properly it functions perfectly.About the Can:- Price - $49.99 is well worth it.- Color Combos - We got the cappuccino color ... super nice for a trash bin.- Wide Pedal - good for ease of use.- Locking Lid - we don't have cats, but I read another review that said this was the only cat proof lock they found that worked. We have an infant so I am sure this will come in handy later when she is reaching height.- Slow Motion Lid - Great little feature .... when you open the lid and let off the pedal the lid very calmly and slowly closes quietly in slow motion. Most cans have lids that just slam shut (and burst some stinky air while at it), but this one is very pleasant. I hadn't thought of this feature until seeing it on this can, now I will make sure to check for it in the future.2 Things:** We had another couple over for dinner recently and they saw the can and it's "slow motion" lid. They were so impressed they went on amazon and bought the black one, haha. How may times have you ever been able to tell a story like that about a trash can?**** Lowe's sells the same can for the same price, but we are Amazon Prime members so we prefer to order online since shipping is free, and that also let's us skip the drive and sales tax =)5 STARS

Love the trash can but can't assemble the lid!
May 6, 2017
Here is what I love about this trashcan: it is attractively designed, elegant, and roomy. The black color so far does not show dirt or fingerprints. Here is what I do not love about this trashcan: I cannot figure out how to attach the lid. That means that I cannot use the step on feature. My son will be coming home soon for the summer from graduate school, so I will get him to figure out how to attach the lid. I consider this a design defect as a reasonably intelligent, well educated consumer should be able to intuit how to assemble a simple trashcan.
Working as planned!
December 27, 2016
The trash can is great. I had one with a lid that swings but the dog was constantly putting his nose in there (approx. 4 month old German Shepard/Lab mix) and it was just a matter of time before he tipped it over and decided to do dumpster diving. Since getting this trash can, he has stopped sniffing at it. To me, that means it is keeping the scents from escaping and tempting him.The only downside is the cost. I feel like I could have done some legwork and found something that functioned as well but cost less. There is also a little frustration in using our trash bags. It's a tight fit, which when using a good bag, isn't a problem. If you use generic trash bags, they will probably break when trying to fit around the odd shape of the can.Other than that, I would recommend this!
It's a trash can with a lid. It keeps the cats out of the trash.
September 15, 2016
At first I loved this and would have given it 5 stars. I needed a trash can with a lid to keep the cats out, and with a foot pedal to open the lid. It does all that and works fine. Recently, I discovered there is a little problem with the design. The bottom of the trash can is not solid plastic, and it does not sit flat on the floor. For some reason, they have designed it with a lot of space underneath the trash can, and the space is conveniently divided up into a grid pattern consisting of a lot of little plastic boxes. Convenient, that is, for the spiders that decided to make webs there. (Finally figured out where the spider babies were coming from.) While admittedly I am not the world's greatest housekeeper, I never would have thought to turn the trash can over. Slide it out and sweep behind it, sure, but turn it upside down? Anyway, if the world's greatest engineer had designed this, it would have a solid bottom. I'm thinking maybe I can caulk it up, but it still won't sit flat to the floor. I had forgotten all about the locking lid, because I bought it two years ago and never locked it. Anyway, when I turned it over to clean it, the locking lid slid into the "locked" position, and it took me 10 minutes to figure out why it wouldn't open and close smoothly. I'm not sure if these are still on the market. If you're thinking about buying it, go ahead, but be aware of the little "turning it upside down to clean it" issue. ;P
A big trashcan with tiny perks
November 4, 2015
When this Simplehuman Trashcan arrived, the box was much lighter than I anticipated it would be. Judging by the size of it, it would seem heavy and clunky but its not. One of the back hooks for the can was dented but I was still able to hook it on without issue. The perks:1. I was pleasantly surprised at the ability to lock the trashcan on the top silver knob you see pictured. The sticker instructions state it is for pets but for my curious toddler, its a perfect feature. If you have kiddos who like to trash surf, GET THIS CAN!2. It comes with 10 complimentary 13 gallon trashbags. how nice. I actually think it is a product push for simplehuman trashbags but whatever, it worked. I like the durability and I think I will order them3. It has a bumper wall guard on the back which protects it from wall rub or scrape marks. love that! This Step trashcan really looks good in the kitchen. I mean if a trashcan can actually look good. If you are looking for a space saver, this is not the can for you but if you are looking for a trashcan that will hold a lot, has nice simple yet thoughtful features and looks decent, this is it.
It's a decent, cheap trash can
May 15, 2014
Pros:- Dig the quiet close lid- The lock is nice for keeping animals and small children out of messing with the trash- It looks nice- Normal sized Kirkland draw string kitchen bags from Costco fit just fineCons:- The back is rounded a fair amount, so placing the back against a wall makes it stick out further than it needs to- One of the arms that lifts the leg when the pedal is triggered broke, so I have to press more on the left side to get the lid to rise, which is annoying, but it still worksUPDATE:As I mentioned above, the pedal broke within about 6 months, but continued to operate allowing the lid to open halfway. A couple of weeks ago, the other side of the pedal broke, so the lid wouldn't open at all. I found a replacement pedal on simplehuman's website for $16. I decided to contact their customer support, and was informed that the trashcan was covered by a five year warranty. They sent me a replacement pedal for free. The package included very easy to follow instructions for replacing the piece, and now the trashcan works just as new.I'm quite impressed with how well designed the trashcan is, and how easy it was to replace the pedal. My only gripe is that the two plastic "ears" that snap in place on the pedal have to absorb quite a bit of force to open the lid, so I think it would've been a better choice to make a metal rod that slides through the pedal, which would be much stronger and alleviate this broken pedal problem. Oh well. Thanks to the excellent warranty and customer service response, I'm upgrading my rating.
Way overpriced.
February 27, 2014
I was looking for a solution to keep my dogs out of the trash. I found these, read all the reviews, and decided this was the trash can that would make my families dreams come true. The can arrived in a huge box, but I was disappointed to see that it was not assembled. Putting the lid on was fairly easy. The 13 gallon kitchen bags we have always used fit perfectly. The step pedal works fine for opening the lid, although the slow close feature is slightly annoying. I hate lollygagging. So why the negative review? Well, 2 reasons.1) price. I get it. Pet people will pay extra for stuff. A lot extra in some cases. So it was a stroke of marketing genius that this can was marketed specifically toward people with trash-digging dogs. I am not sure what I was expecting. Maybe a little better quality. Maybe an actual metal lock switch. Maybe just something....ANYTHING....that would justify my guilt in spending $50 for a molded piece of plastic. A trash can no less.2) It really doesn't work. We have been using the can for a week, and the dogs have not gotten into it yet. So why am I not declaring victory? Well, because I know they CAN get into it. They just haven't figured that out yet. The "lock" on this can is a joke. Yes it locks the lid. If you pull straight up on the lid, you will not be able to get it open. However, if you jiggle it around slightly, it doesn't take much to get the lock to fail. So while we have beating the furry bandits for the moment, I know that some day they will figure this out and have a field day again. The bottom line is that this can is no better or worse than any other trash can on the market. Do not be fooled that they market it toward pet owners. The only part of this can specifically designed for pet owners is the price.*******************************3-25-14 update. Well, the can was tested today and it passed the test. My dog knocked the can over and drug it into the other room, chewed apart part of the bag, and finally gave up. The lock never did give out.Because of this victory, I am increasing my review rating from 2 to 4 stars. I still feel the can is very over priced for what it is, but it does keep the animals out of it.

Ridiculous that the lid comes unattached
May 4, 2017
This is my second trash can from Simple Human, and it's fine as trash cans go. The reason for the lower rating here on Amazon is that it ships without the lid attached for some strange reason. When I bought this the first time years ago, I bought it at Bed Bath & Beyond, and the lid was attached. The picture that comes with this unit regarding the attaching of the lid is ridiculous, making it look like, once you get the long metal hook in the right slot (connects with foot opener below), you just slide the two other lid stabilizers onto the little plastic bars to secure them. Well, let me tell you, there is no easy sliding on there. You have to use quite a bit of force to get them in position. I finally just smashed them in place with the lower part of my palm, and they finally sat correctly. Next time, it's Bed Bath & Beyond, for sure. Same price. Lid's attached. 20% discount coupon. Simply fumin'.
Nice looking and deep.
April 20, 2017
I gave 3 stars due to problem of getting the lid attached.I am a senior with good strength but no way would it attach. I brought it to my brother and he went to work on it. Ha Ha he could not get it on until he got his sledge hammer and gave it a few good whacks. The price of these cans there is no excuse for this if I did not have help back it would have gone. Shame on you simple human.
Really great, but breaks over time
March 19, 2017
We've had this trashcan for about 2.5 years, bought it from Amazon in August of 2014.Pros: It's been mostly great, a big step up from the basic Rubbermaid we had before with no lid. Our kids were toddlers at the time and have mostly grown out of the "throw everything away" phase of toddlerhood, but the lock was AMAZING at deterring them. Nowadays we don't lock it because we have no pets and the kids are old enough that they know what's trash and what isn't. It's nice looking, and it sits somewhat prominently in our kitchen area, so that's a big plus. It's also sturdy and has a wide base, so there have been no tipping over issues. Regular generic box brand bags have fit great.Cons: it moves a lot. It's against the end our cupboards/counter, and no matter how hard we try to keep it from hitting up against the counter, it always migrates. The biggest downfall, and the reason my review is 3 stars, is that the step mechanism has broken. One day it just sort of snapped. That was about 6-12 months ago, but we've just been living with it until now. I'm looking into buying something else, but I'm disappointed that our somewhat expensive trash can has to be replaced this quickly. This trash can keeps popping up in my searches, so I'm finally leaving a review.
Nice enough, but not worth the $50 Price Tag ...
March 8, 2017
In and of itself, this is a nice trash can. I ordered it because I have one dog who was able to unlock the mechanism on my old trash can and I needed to be able to keep him out of the trash. I am pleased with the overall look and working mechanisms of the trash can, and would probably give it at least a 4 star rating, if not a 5 star rating, if it weren't for the price. The materials and basic construction of the trash can do not warrant a $50.00 price tag. I would have rather spent that kind of money locally and bought a nicer trash can for the same amount of money. Typically returning a product to Amazon is relatively smooth and painless, at least in my experience, but timing was not on my side. I will keep this trash can and endeavor to get my $50.00 out of it ...
Stone=Gray, Not White
June 12, 2015
I thought this Stone color would be white or off-white, but it is a mid-tone grey. You can't tell from the picture, but the top juts back 2-3 inches farther than the body of the can, so it doesn't sit flush against the wall. The quality seems fine, but it's not a good trash can if you need it flush again the wall in a narrow space. Very easy returns even though it wasn't fulfilled by Amazon. I would buy from this company again.
*So* close
January 29, 2014
This is really a pretty good product. Roomy, sturdy, comparatively inexpensive. It's great if you have pets that like nothing better than attacking the trash commando style as soon as you leave the house, and spending the next several hours breakdancing on some 3-day old shrimp shells (and no, sadly, that is not an imagined hypothetical situation). It's weighty enough and tall enough to withstand being knocked over by your average small to medium dog, and the lockable lid keeps your nasties safely tucked away.Oh no, wait, I was writing as if I didn't live with a FAT BEAGLE! My apologies! If YOU happen to live with a fat beagle, I mean seriously, just forget it. You may as well just go outside right now and burn every piece of trash in the house, because nothing is safe otherwise. It took our beagle a while to crack this can, granted. Several months in fact. But now she's mastered it, using a technique best summed up as "knock & drag". I've not seen her in the act, but have found the trash many yards away from its usual home. The first few times it remained locked, so thumbs up there, but it only took one time where the fall knocked the lock, and popped it out (it has a sort of push-in mechanism ), and all was lost.So to recap, the trash can is pretty good, but If your dog is greedy enough, and devious enough, keep right on browsing...

April 28, 2017
Product looks great. It really needs a special sized bag to properly fit. My biggest issue is that the lock at the top broke within 2 days of having it. Which really defeats the purpose as my dog can no just use his nose to lift the lid and get what he wants. This was main reason I bought the trash can with a locking lid in the first place.
Miniature pincher wins again!
December 7, 2016
The trashcan looks great, is a nice size and it does lock but....my miniature pincher figured out how to unlock it. The main reason I bought this was to keep him out of my trashcan. If I was buying the trashcan for looks, ease of operation, or size I would give it a five stars. But since I was buying the trashcan because it locked to keep my Minpin out of the trash, it gets only 2 stars.
Trash can slides on floor
August 26, 2016
With all the rave reviews of this product there is one major flaw. The bottom of trash has no rubber feet to grip the floor, so every time you press the foot pedal the can slides backwards towards the wall, eventually rubbing the paint off the wall as the lid moves up. I'm going to try getting some rubber feet at the hardware store and see if that works. Really simple thing that was not thought out properly.
This trash can would have been perfect if the lid fit
May 27, 2016
This trash can would have been perfect if the lid fit!.....the lid would not snap into the can so I have to manually lift the lid and close it as oppose to using the step opener part of the can......will keep until I feel like get another one but I will never purchase from this company again!!
It shouldn't take all of this to put it together!
December 27, 2015
I'm sorry but the lid experience just rendered this entire trash can an asinine purchase. I have tried for DAYS, with rubber mallets, hammers, standing on top of the trash can (I'm 110 lbs) and to no avail is this stupid lid on the doggone can. If the husband cannot get it on when he returns from his business trip, its GOING BACK. Gorgeous design, probably a nice trash can but as big as the box was that amazon delivered it in, just put the freaking lid on for us guys, seriously.
Disappointing
May 7, 2015
I am disappointed with this trash can, aside from the pet lock-out, there is nothing remarkable about It. It is over-priced. I bought it thinking for that price it must be able to keep odors in! It doesn't! Hard to imagine how one woman said she used hers as a diaper pail! Must not be this trash can. The lid closes so slooowly it's easy to imagine it breaking any day now. I don't have a pet so the lock feature is kind of useless to me. I expected a more sturdy can, something that will not topple easily. In this case high price definitely does not equal quality!

I can't believe this trash can is simplehuman. The step doesn't work. When I try to step down on it, the whole can falls forward. Opening it manually with my hand works only half the time. Endless frustration.
Decent trash can until it breaks, warranty process super painful.
January 11, 2016
This trash can worked well for 18 months, then the pedal broke on one side making it hard for the lid to open. A couple months later it broke on the other side leaving the pedal completely unable to lift the lid. Part of the reason I bought this relatively expensive trash can was due to the 5 year warranty. Well given the trash can stopped working in less than 2 years from normal usage I expected to receive a free pedal quickly and painlessly...Well guess what, that is the opposite of what has happened. I tried to contact the customer service but they have this clever little trick with their website. After filling out all the information they requested, when I tried to scroll down to the bottom of the web page to click the "Submit" button the web page wouldn't let me scroll down all the way. When I got to the bottom of the page to the "submit" button the webpage would bounce back up before I could click. Pretty clever way to not have to uphold their warranty promise, but just wait this company has more tricks up his sleeve. After giving up trying to find a useful customer service friendly phone number, I figured out if I connected my Apple laptop to Apple TV and used my TV screen I could then actually see AND click the "submit" button. So first hoop from the folks at simplyhuman cleared. On to the next...Next hoop, the company's automatically generated email promised a reply in 2 business days I didn't hear anything until 4, ok not a big deal. I now have a response and hopefully my replacement pedal is on the way. Oh wait, despite having all the necessary information (including my mailing address, the exact part I need and confirmation from Amazon's website of the product's purchase date and the fact it is very much still under warranty) they ask me to order it myself and direct me back to the same page I started at to contact them. And I do, clearing the next hoop. So end of story right, nope, simplehuman throws another hoop at me to try to crush my determination to get them to honor their warranty. The replacement pedal they force ME to order for myself is suddenly "out of stock"!!! Can you believe it??!?!?! It was in stock when I sent my original email requesting help.So they included a link asking for my feedback regarding their customer service and I replied with a detailed email similar to this one about my dissatisfaction. No response, still waiting, broken trash can goes wanting and so do I.
Didn't last a year
July 30, 2015
After about ten months of use one pin on the end of the pedal broke making it almost impossible to open the can with the pedal (the only reason we bought this). These high stress parts are just plastic cast into the pedal. I notified the company and they shipped a new pedal. It was easy to install except for getting the lid off and then back on, and the pedal out as they are forced into position by flexing the plastic. The instructions for replacing the pedal were incorrect but I was easily able to figure them out. If you don’t mind replacing the pedal once or twice a year then consider this a four star as it works well for us when not broken. I will be interested to see if the company will replace this pedal when it breaks.
It's a can of Crap
March 24, 2015
Biggest $49.99 can of trash ! As others, I cannot get the lid hinges to snap on....top will not stay open nor does the step opener work.....It came in a huge box well big enough for it to come with lid attached and then some room. The only feature that works in the lock....but as another reviewer said his dogs still got into it. Since the hinges do not catch all my little dogs have to do is tip the can over and the back of the lid will open.Save your money.....simplehuman co....try sending it with the lid attached
Useless Locking Mechanism
March 23, 2015
Extremely disappointed with this product, especially based on all the glowing reviews.I purchased this trash can under the impression that the pet lock would actually keep pets out, but the flimsy plastic design didn't even hold up for a week. My dog (28 lbs.) tore through the corner and unlatched the locking mechanism spreading trash all over our home. For $50 I expected a lot more. It's a fine as a trash can and the silent step mechanism is nice, but the lock is more or less useless. Don't buy this if you think it's going to keep your pets out.
Very disappointed

I was loathe to spend so much on a trash can but I needed one that my dog can't get into. It seemed very sturdy. But a week after getting this my dog (who is 40lbs) figured out that if he tugged on the trash bag in just the right place he could undo the latch. So, I used the bags that fit it properly. Then a week or so after that he found out that if he knocked it onto it's back and pounced on the curved front it pops open. So then I tried using a bungee cord to attach it to the wall and even with the exact fit bags he still can get a hold of it and tug until it opens and pull out the garbage from the top.
