Excellent machine
December 26, 2016
This is an excellent machine. We had one of these at our office for about 4 years. it got used and abused by a number of people daily and held up strong. When that one finally died i bought one for myself to use. It makes excellent coffee and is easy to use even if you dont know what you're doing. Use fine ground espresso and keep it clean and it will be very reliable and turn out a great cup every time. The steam wand is excellent, just take off the frothing tip it comes with, totally pointless.
5 Stars from the Barista
July 16, 2016
As a barista on a budget, I wasn't expecting to get any espresso machine comparable to the 5 grand ones I'm used to. This this little espresso machine is impressive for the price! Still not comparable of course, but I believe it's as close you can get without spending a fortune. The build quality is solid, it steams great, and the espresso comes out creamy. When you power on the machine, the top surface heats, which is a great amenity if you don't want your hot espresso pouring into cold cups. I can make every hot drink I'd make in the shop with this machine. The extra features are nice too. The bottom slides out to easily dump excess water or espresso, and there is a hidden compartment to store various things. The accent lighting behind the buttons is a nice touch too for anyone who appreciates a machine that's also eye catching. There's also an attachment that goes over the steam wand (mine came pre-attached, but you can pull it off) that makes the drinks extra frothy. It comes with a milk pitcher and espresso tamper. All you may want to invest in is a couple of shot glasses. Overall, it was a great purchase.
Great flat whites!
March 23, 2016
Read the instructions first, priming just before you extract works wonders. Get some good coffee. I had Starbucks grind up a lb of beans and they guaranteed if not right they replaced it. Been making some great flat white and cappuccino! Stepping up in grade makes a big difference
Sturdy device
April 20, 2015
Good performance delivering good cafe crema every time. Device is really solid and after few days anybody can become an expert mastering this coffee machine. The puck is a bit to bring out and sometimes the filter would fall off when tapping the portafilter in order to empty it. I think thia is the perfect machine for those starting to the world of expresso making.
Good Taste with Attention
January 23, 2015
I've been wanting my own espresso machine for a while. I am a novice to epresso making, who did a lot of research before the purchase. While this machine does not get good ratings from the pros, I think it is definately a workable machine for someone like me who ultimately just wants a good tasting brew that is not sour or acidic. I've owned this for 3 days, and have made 10 shots, and with experimenting definately had a range of results, but finally figured out the right configuration for a good tasting brew. What I learned to make a good brew: 1) Have good quality, fresh beans. 2) Each type of bean must be exprimented with to grind at correct size. 3) Tampering requires some skill in terms of placement of grind, distributing the grind, and then putting pressure. 3) Timing the machine and watching the amount that releases within 27 seconds. Also, Breville has great customer support. I had a problem that they resolved quickly.
Great machine for the price
January 8, 2015
I researched many different espresso machines before purchasing this one. I watched reviews on YouTube and read different blogs and articles. In my opinion, this is the best machine for the money. There may be some good machines that are much less expensive, but I don't believe that they will give you as much control over the brew and steaming of the milk. My first recommendation if you purchase this machine is to remove the "aerating tip" from the steam wand. I didn't realize that this was there at first, and my milk was coming out very foamy. This is good for a cappuccino, but impossible to make a latte. The milk foamed so much with this on that the pitcher would begin to over flow long before the milk would reach the ideal temperature of 140 degrees F. Also, it was impossible (for me) to get the milk to swirl in the pitcher with this tip in place. Once removed, I couldn't believe how easy it was to swirl the milk. Remove the tip and work on the art of steaming. Your first lattes and cappuccinos may not be that good, but the practice will pay off in the long run. This machine comes with almost every accessory that you will need. I recommend purchasing an "espresso thermometer" though. I ended up using a meat thermometer that I had. It works, but is difficult to read while steaming. It is critical to get the milk to a certain temperature to bring out the full flavor, but not too hot that you scald the milk. Initially, you will need a thermometer to reach this temp. After enough experience, you will be able to gauge the temp based on time and feel of the steaming pitcher.

Great little pitcher
November 28, 2016
We've been using this frothing pitcher daily for several months and we're really pleased with it! It's easy to use, easy to clean, and holds a large amount of milk. It, true to its nature, has not stained or tarnished. The pitcher is a great price for the quality and serves as a necessary tool to help make perfect lattes, cappuccinos, and more at home!
Great frothing cup...
January 5, 2016
This frothing cup works perfectly for us. We're not using it in the conventional manner for making Lattes. I often shoot a little Vanilla into the froth, and Hazelnut into the coffee (espresso). I've come to prefer to froth directly in our clear glasses then. I would *also* like to drop the espresso directly into the froth then... but our glasses won't fit under our espresso maker... and the hazelnut would combine with the rest in the process. So to get the separation of flavors, I drop the hazelnut into this frothing cup, and drop the espresso directly into the frothing cup as well. Then I slowly poor the hazelnut-espresso combination down the center or the glass full of froth... and we're ready to go.Anyway, this frothing cup is perfect for both purposes. Cleans very well/easily, due to its material and finish. Fine in the dishwasher as well.
It's a 12 Ounce Stainless Steel Pitcher.
April 17, 2014
As long as you understand what '12 ounces,' 'Stainless,' and 'Pitcher' mean, then you can't be anything but satisfied with this product. It's a rather small metal pitcher that is often used for frothing milk in an espresso - environment. This one is great for us, as we have a Gaggia Classic, and this pitcher fits under the frothing wand perfectly (yes, we use the black frothing attachment - don't go hatin'!). Before we invested in this pitcher, we were using a short coffee mug / soup bowl that made a mess every time we poured foamy froth. The spout functions as a spout should, so we're cleaning up less.If you have a larger machine, or need froth to balance out more than a double-shot, then you may want something bigger, but this little thing is perfect for our uses.
Just right
February 23, 2014
Prior to ordering these pitchers, I read the reviews thoroughly noting that many people gave varying testimonials in regards to the true size of the pitcher displayed, as well as the best sized pitcher to get a good foam. So keeping in mind I am new to the 'cafe-at-home' thing, here goes my opinion...After measuring out 12 ounces of water and pouring it into the pitcher, yes, the pitcher is a full 12 ounces... all the way to the brim, as other reviewers have mentioned. So if you are looking to foam a full 12 ounces of milk (for those who do not know, the milk will expand with foam as it is steamed, so do not fill all the way to the top prior to steaming - you will get a mess), get the larger size, but truthfully I don't think you'll need it. Most of the traditional sized at home coffee mugs are roughly 8-10 ounces, so unless you are trying to fill a 16 ounce travel mug with just steamed milk (no espresso), this 12 ounce pitcher will work just fine. While some people have mentioned that they use the larger pitcher for two people, I can only attest to using this pitcher for two people once, and I used small cappuccino style mugs (~3-4 oz mugs). With this method things came out just ok (perhaps I need more practice, or it is best to just steam each drink separately). If you are just looking to steam large quantities of milk, and not concerned too much with type/quality of foam, the larger one may be for you (such as if you are making hot cocoa for a large number of people, or the foam consistency is not important). However, for a single drink, be it mug or travel thermos, this 12 ounce pitcher works just great, and delivers the perfect quantity of steamed milk with the perfect consistency of foam. Not only that, but in our house, I use soy milk (lactose allergy) while my boyfriend prefers whole milk in his drinks, and the two pitchers work just perfect for both types of milk.As to the quality of the pitchers, I have not noticed any rust stains, defects, imperfections, or any thing else with these mugs since I have purchased them a month or so ago. I cannot remember where I read it, but somewhere I read to store them in the freezer. Since then I have been storing mine solely in the freezer after allowing them to air dry post washing, and they are still holding up fine. The only negative thing I have to say about these pitchers is that they are smaller in diameter at the top of the pitcher than they are at the bottom (similar to an erlenmeyer flask), so I have a difficult time wiping out the inside bottom of the pitcher with a dish cloth. This is easily fixed however using a bottle brush, but it would be nice to just wipe them with a cloth. All things considered, great pitchers, would purchase again, highly recommend.
perfect match with Delonghi Smaller Espresso Machines
February 3, 2014
I got this to pair with http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0002A3S66/ref=cm_cr_ryp_prd_ttl_sol_18 (De'Longhi BAR32 Retro 15 BAR Pump Espresso and Cappuccino Maker) and it's a solid match. It's small, but the espresso machine is small. Don't get either if you're trying to open a coffee shop or if you want a bucket of cappucino. Both are built for smaller coffee pours. Some tips:- Use 2% or Whole milk. Foam is better and richer- get milk out a while before you make coffee. you really have to steam the crap out of it to not end up with a lukewarm coffee- you can dump the milk out and use this to catch the steam when you're emptying out the machine. it's just high enough to catch between the wand and the base, and you can just turn the steam nozzle up and walk away
Good little frothing mug
March 15, 2013
It's what you'd expect. It's small but perfect for my needs. I've got the DeLonghi espresso machine, and this guy heats/froths about the perfect amount of milk with the shot the machine produces to make what I'd consider a medium (grande) size latte like you would get at a certain popular coffee house. With the delonghi, this pitcher fits perfectly on the platform to allow for hands free steaming. I fill it just over half way with milk, drop a thermometer in it, and when it hits about 130-140, grab the handle, pull it and the wand off to the side of the machine, and froth up the milk to about the top. You do have to lift the machine (or tilt the pitcher) to get it from under the wand. Not a big deal. Now the body gets hot (duh) but the handle stays cooler. I've never had any issues holding it with the hot milk. Cleans up easy too.

Good Coffee - Few Quirks
July 20, 2016
This Breville is a good entry-level espresso machine for the home enthusiast - it produces nice crema from the double-walled filters and does a good job of frothing milk, especially for the price point. It is well-built and sturdy. I haven't owned it long enough to advise on how well the stainless holds up to daily use.I have owned 15 bar home espresso machines in the past that have been cheaper than this one by Breville that produced slightly better crema and frothed milk a little better. After two uses, I removed the froth enhancer, deciding it to be more of a gimmick than a useful addition to the steam wand. Milk can be textured easily and well without it with a little practice. The machine is generally pretty easy to use and works really well. The only thing that is annoying is the inability to set the machine to heat up for steam without actually operating the steam wand. The manual tells you to turn the central knob to steam (or hot water) and when steam starts coming out, place the milk pitcher over it quickly so you don't spray milk everywhere!! Again, I have owned at least one cheaper machine that allowed me to select the steam (or hot water) button, then turn the central knob to steam on the front once the correct temperature had been reached to operate the steam function. This seems like clumsy product development by Breville.I also had to deduct points for another annoying habit of the machine to spray water everywhere when you are using the steam wand, turn it off to remove the pitcher, then turn it back to on to purge the steam wand of milk. Just shows how quickly this machine purges to get to espresso brewing temperature after steaming. The water tank is also a bit under-sized for the machine - I can make maybe four mug-sized (double shot) lattes and the tank is empty by the time I clean the portafilter and group head (by running water from the machine through both the filter and the group head to remove adhered grinds). All in all, it has a few annoying quirks but makes a really nice coffee so I would still recommend it to anyone wanting a manual machine without the hefty price tag.
Great entry level home machine
November 15, 2015
As for a non-commercial espresso machine, I've got to say: this thing is alright. Is it earth shattering? No, but it certainly gets the job "done". The steam wand leaves a LOT to be desired, but if left in water and running, it WILL boil water.Pros:All Stainless Steel contact areas, this makes it easy to clean, as well as much more durable. The triple priming, takes out some of an advanced technique and lays it in your lapDual temperature, higher temperature for the steam wand, so the coffee doesn't have too many tannins drawn outContinuous addition reservoir, so you can make espresso on a rapid fire rate without reheatingDouble wall porta-filter, to pour a very consistent shotNo settings to screw up, its plug and playThe porta-filter handle is solidly in place and sealed. I haven't done it, but you could pick up the machine by the filter and not have it wiggle. The steam wand hasn't leaked in in the ball-joint for my owning this machine for yearsQuickly gets to temperature for shotsVery easy to cleanHas a "pod" shot adapter (which I have never used)Storage bin is very very nice, especially if you get extra filtersInsanely easy controls. Remembers if you used "steam" or "hot water" the last timeConsThe steam wand has little pressure, and you've really got to work the foam to get any volumeDouble wall porta-filter, your shots will be consistent, but never greatThe "cup warmer" on top is useless, fill a glass with hot water to sit and pour it out before you're ready to pull your shotNo settings to change, I want it to act different; but it won'tTakes a while to get steam-wand pressure, and leaves much to be desired. The tamper is flimsy, and due to its shape, is not easy to really get a good tamp. The scoop on the tamper is equally worthless, and will spill grounds everywhere. Fill directly from the grinder.Heat-block instead of a boiler. Heats faster but at the cost of consistent temperatureSingle heat-block, you've got to wait for the temperature to switch from shots to the steam wandIf you happen to run out of water, it doesn't really want to start pumping again. You should NEVER let it go dry, but when you are pouring a lot of shots: it happens. I really thought I burned up the pump, and it took cooling it off and turning it back on to start pumping again. In summation: this machine is not a mistake to purchase. If you aren't really concerned about what shot you're pulling, keep the original filter. I ordered single wall filters from Breville, and haven't put the double walls back in. I guess if you have a boyfriend/girlfriend or husband/wife who doesn't care how to learn the art of the grind and tamp, the double walls would be great to keep handy. My calipers say the porta-filter from Breville is on the opening 51.2mm, so maybe order a better tamper. Is it worth getting a Reg Barber for $85 to be a perfect fit? Yes. If you upgrade later, you can move the handle to the new tamper base. The tamper is pretty much garbage, but I used it for a long time. The tamper isn't even really the correct size, it leaves a small "wall" of coffee around one side of the filter. You can have a $10,000 espresso machine, and it won't be worth a nickle if you don't have a good grind going in. If you aren't ready to spend money for a good grinder, you aren't ready to buy ANY espresso machine (unless you plan on using "pod" shots). This is not a bad purchase to get you by so you can apply for money for a decent grinder. I bought a Rancillio Rocky, and it is a great-prosumer pairing. I've set this machine 4" away from a hand made manual La Pavoni, and it isn't even a close comparison. Without doing a A/B contrast between a good shot and this, I'd say nobody would really complain. However, this isn't really a "fill a demitasse" and drink it straight kind of deal, you should make cappuccinos or lattes with this thing. If you have a really heavy roast with a really earthy bean, you can drink straight shots. This doesn't really keep a delicate bean tasting like it should. In the end, do I regret buying this machine? No. I bought this machine when it was $500, and still am happy with the purchase. If I could go back, I would have spent $850 on a rebuilt La Pavoni from the 70's; but I still enjoy and would keep this machine if I got something better. Around a year after spending $500 on this machine and $550 on a grinder, it has paid for itself.
great coffee but noisy
September 14, 2015
Makes great espresso. Well constructed, attractive. The only downside is the noise. It does make quite a racket. I don't know if all home espresso machine pumps operate at similar noise levels so I can't say if this is unusual. But it will wake the house. If noise is a concern, I might suggest sticking with a non-pump machine, or continue to research until you find a pump model that is reputed to be quieter. As others have said, this does not produce a dry puck. If you consider that an unforgivable flaw, look elsewhere. I suspect it may have something to do with the dual-wall filter, but don't know that for sure (if buying single wall filters would produce a dry puck?)I've had no issues with clogging, but I always rinse out the brew head and pull a shot of hot water through the filter before shutting the machine off. Just habit, takes 15 seconds, but it may help to avoid the clogging issues some others are reporting.
Like others have stated - you don't get the dry ...
July 28, 2015
First of all - I am a complete newbie to the espresso game. I didn't want to spend $1000 on a machine - and have no idea how to use it.To me - this is an entry level machine - and it simply get's the job done.Like others have stated - you don't get the dry "puck" when you're done making a shot of espresso - so that's kind of annoying for cleaning. To resolve this, once we're done using it - we simply take the wand down from the machine and set it on the grate - this allows it to drain and the beans to dry out - making it easier to clean. The steamer works fine - and creates good frothing on the milk (my wife is better at it than I am)We haven't had any issues mechanically with the machine - so I guess it has performed as I had expected. Now with a bit of practice - I think we may upgrade to a unit without a heat block - but with a boiler.Overall I would recommend this to someone who is just starting out - it seems like a good machine to learn on - without sacrificing some features.
The quest for perfect espresso/cappuccino.
April 25, 2015
Despite what some of the reviews say I've been able to produce some of the best tasting shots I've had anywhere with the Breville 800ESXL 15-Bar Triple-Priming Die-Cast Espresso Machine. Despite this machines short comings (thermablock/wet puck) for the money I think it's a great buy especially at the $200 lighting deal price.I will cut to the skinny and skip over what most reviews have already covered, and cover what I found to be the best combo to get the best tasting shots out of this machine.1.) Get the freshest whole bean coffee you can get of whatever kind you fancy, and keep them fresh.2.) Get a quality grinder, the grind is critical. I bought the Breville BCG800XL Smart Grinder and it accompanies this machine beautifully. Your settings will vary from bean to bean so that's something you will have to experiment with. You are trying to achieve a 25 to 30 second pull for 1 to 1.5 oz shot with a 25 to 30 lbs tamp. I suggest getting some decent Costco coffee beans while you hone your grinding, and tamping skills. The shots will get better and you won't break the bank while doing so.3.) Buy a signal walled filter basket. The Krups MS-0907163 2 Cup Filter works perfectly and I suggest buying it.4.) Buy a quality tamper. The RSVP Terry's Tamper for Espresso works perfectly and I suggest buying it.5.) Pre heat the machine before pulling shots. I also run the machine with the portafilter empty for a couple seconds prior to adding the grids to get it up to temp.6.) Purge the machine and wipe down the group head after each use. A clean machine produces better tasting shots. If you're making cappuccino despite what some reviews say this machine will froth milk very well if you know what you're doing. Start off by removing the metal sheath on the steam wand and learn how to froth milk without it, your results will be much improved. There are tons of YouTube videos on how to do this. Your ears along with a quality temp probe will be a great deal of help. I suggest buying the Cooper-Atkins 1236-70-1 Bi-Metals Espresso Milk Frothing Thermometer with Clip, 1" Dial and 5" Shaft Length to help monitor your temperatures. I froth my milk with the tip of the steam wand just enough in the milk so there is a suction sound until the milk reaches 100 degrees. Then I submerge the steam wand into the milk so that there is a whirlpool until 160 degrees, and produce amazing results. Conclusion:With some patients, and trial and error anyone should be able to produce cafe quality espresso/cappuccino with the Breville 800ESXL 15-Bar Triple-Priming Die-Cast Espresso Machine. If you are on a budget and just getting into the hobby of being a at home barista, the items I've listed above will get you well on your way and should keep you going for years to come.
nice machine making good coffee, but filters clog easily
December 30, 2014
Look, feel and sound are nice. It's a beautiful machine and the espresso and cappuccino it produces are good. However, I was surprised how easy the filter gets clogged (even though I was prepared after reading the other reviews). I got the machine about a week ago and the first time this happened was at day two (espresso nr. 8 or so). There are tools included to help cleaning the filters, and the manual offers a full page of tips for fixing this.Anyways, I think the manufacturer would do better correcting this problem than just offering tips for what to do after it happened. There's room for improvement, go Breville!

A nice small frothing pitcher - great value
May 18, 2016
This is a nice quality stainless steel frothing pitcher. IT IS SMALL - 12 oz - so keep this in mind when you purchase it. If you are making cappuccino type foam then you can expect your milk to about double in size (maybe more if you're not skilled at frothing yet it can bubble up) so expect to only be able to froth about 6 ounces of milk maybe less depending on your frothing skills. If you're trying to make a "grande" latte or cappuccino, you need a bigger pitcher. If the size is right for you, then this is a great value for the quality and the price of the item. I found it heats up steadily with the milk as it should - it gets hot as the milk gets hot - so it makes it easy to tell when the milk is at a good temperature and you can stop steaming it. The handle does stay cool.
Pretty good cheap frothing pitcher
January 12, 2016
Pretty good cheap frothing pitcher. I bought it for use alongside my Delonghi espresso machine as a way to train myself in how to use the frothing wand consistently and effectively. The pitcher is the perfect size for this function, and as far as I can tell, its shape is also serviceable. (Some people claim that the shape of the pitcher influences the quality of the foam. I personally can't tell a difference). Sometimes the handle grew uncomfortably hot, and was a little tricky to manipulate.I would say that if you're just starting out exploring the world of espresso-based coffee drinks, this is an excellent accessory at a great price. I suspect it might be outclasses by some fancier options that cost at least twice as much, but I'm not that much of a coffee fanatic to be able to honestly notice those distinctions.
Make sure this is the size you want!
January 29, 2015
Great frothing pitcher, does what it's supposed to do. One word of caution: be ABSOLUTELY SURE you want the smaller 12oz pitcher because when I saw it and used it the first few times it felt way too small. It will work great for frothing milk for one Starbucks size tall latte but nothing more, and even so you'll probably be frothing till the the foam is about to spill over. So if you want to make two drinks or to froth just slightly more milk you'd be better off with the larger pitcher. That being said, we only use it to make one latte... and since the Gaggia Classic machine we have seems to be on the smaller side and the wand only moves left right, this smaller pitcher fits nicely under the wand, the larger one would be more complicated to maneuver.
Keep it cold
April 24, 2014
My husband uses this with his espresso maker. He's become a coffee maker at home with his own little bistro and I can't work the machine at all but these little frothing pitcher's come in handy for the milk. To get a good froth, he puts them in the freezer and then uses them when he froths the milk for the lattes. It's a sturdy pitcher and retains a lot of cold in the freezer but from my understanding keeping it cold and then using it to froth the milk is suppose to really help with making that latte really sing with froth and richness. He's made me a few lattes but I'm not good at judging coffee. I have to admit though homemade coffee is not as bitter and if you're gonna make coffee you might as well get all the bells and whistles like this frothing cup.
Almost Perfect
January 19, 2013
My first thought when I saw the pitcher was, no way that holds 12 ounces. It seemed too small, 8 oz at most. Then I measured - it holds 12 oz when filled to the brim. I needed a small pitcher to fit under the frother of my De'Longhi EC155 15 BAR Pump Espresso and Cappuccino Maker which sits very low and too close to the counter for a larger pitcher. The EP-12 is 3 3/4 inches tall and fits the bill perfectly. It's stainless steel, has sturdy construction and looks like it will last. I fill the frothing pitcher about half way to make cappuccinos, and it provides just the right amount of milk for one drink.I wish the pitcher had some sort of markings on the inside so I would not have to guesstimate how much milk to pour. Milk does double or triple in volume when frothing so I have to be extra careful not to let it overflow.
Great Update frothing pitcher - but mirror polished surface tarnishes easily
April 10, 2012
This is product is described as a "Saeco" frothing pitcher but the one I received from "KJ Collections" was an "Update" frothing pitcher. Saeco is a brand name in espresso coffee circles, "Update" is an off-brand.The "Update" pitcher looks identical to the advertised "Saeco" pitcher when brand new and functions well.Cons:The "Update" mirror polished exterior surfaces tarnish very easily!! After 2 months of use it no longer shines like a mirror and is looking smoky and dappled with dots of tarnish. I will have to polish it with tarnish remover!! Luckily I don't care how it looks, only that it functions well. Conclusion:Don't order it from "KJ Collections", they are not shipping a Saeco pitcher. Maybe the real "Saeco FRO-TH12 12 oz. frothing pitcher" will maintain its mirror polished shine without tarnishing. Regardless of how it looks, the "Update" pitcher functions perfectly.

... than my entry level Cuisinart machine but with some bad design flaws
August 7, 2016
It's more substantial than my entry level Cuisinart machine but with some bad design flaws. Firstly, it's not easy to read the water level. a dim LED lights the clear reservoir and the obviously clear meniscus of the water level, giving you a very faint glimpse of how much water is in the tank. If you forget to check and the water level is low you'll hear the pump start to labor at which point you'll need to shut off the machine, let it cool enough to relieve the pressure so you can remove the porta filter, swing the steam wand out of the way and slide out the tank. At least my old machine could be refilled while it was running. The Aussies got this one wrong.
even much cheaper machines do better
December 15, 2015
My old espresso maker died, so I bought this one, which is 3+ times more expensive. Unfortunately, it's not as good as the old machine. The good:* stainless steel body looks great and must be durable* the buttons are convenient and good looking* it's pretty tall to allow almost any cup size* coffee tastes pretty good, but you need to use a fine grind and a good tamper (supplied tamper is useless), otherwise it will be weak and tastelessThe bad:* little crema* only first cup is hot, two cups are warm unless you stop machine after the first cup and wait the warming light to go off* it doesn't stop poring coffee automatically, the old machine would stop after poring two cups* it doesn't turn itself off after being unused for a long time, the old machine turned itself off after 30min* it wastes a lot of water* the water tank is inconveniently designed, you can't top up once you started brewing
Noisy, junkey machine !
June 29, 2015
Disappointing. Sounds like a cement mixer when operating..A very unrefined "tank" of an espresso machine. Heavy stainless construction, but rattly and noisy operation, Plenty of stainless steel, but smooth, quiet operation is absent. My old Cuisinart was more refined and lasted 5 years.Coffee is no better than with my cheap DeLonghi.
800 vs 850
February 10, 2015
I thought I was buying the 850 model not the 800. My mistake. I was trying to replace an 850 model that lasted me nearly 15 years. They look just alike but are not. Anywho, the 800 works just fine. But has a few features left off. Like being able to fill the water tank without removing the entire tank. A major hassle. Get the 850 model.
Questionable
August 11, 2013
I purchased the 800 and have had it for two days, and the machine has stopped pushing the water through coffee (lost pressure). Amazon is the Best at returns, so i scheduled the pick-up and re-ordered another machine (maybe just a lemon). I have reviewed numerous reviews throughout the net, and there are some least favorable reviews! Trying to get an expresso machine for a lower cost is hard, BUT WHY? What is it that cost so much to manufacture these machine?Anyway the coffee made was fair, I am going to order the non-pressurized basket, and see what type of coffee we can get from this? If you have the money buy the Silvia, and have no worries. If you are in our position, here we are waiting on another machine, keeping fingers crossed this is a quality machine, and will last making coffee's.When I receive the new machine I will continue with review, I will wait a couple weeks and see the longevity of machine (even though a couple weeks is not long). 3 stars because I want machine to work, reality its a 1 because broke in 2 days.
Loved it...until it needed repair!
March 26, 2009
*****PLEASE READ ENTIRE REVIEW...SEE UPDATE BELOW!*****This is my first espresso machine and I love it! I thought it was really very easy to use and it makes a great espresso. I am still experimenting with different coffees, settings on my Kitchen Aid burr grinder and tamping pressures; all really do make a difference in the final product. The first few times I used it I thought the coffee wasn't hot enough so I was getting a bit worried. But once the heating light goes out, run the hot water through the system for a few seconds before attaching the portafilter and you'll get a steaming hot espresso. Some reviewers complained of it being noisy, but I expected that it would be. The steamer/frother does take about 10 seconds to get going, but once it does, it does a nice job with little effort. Unless you turn on the machine a good 30 minutes before you want your espresso, I think the cup warmer is worthless. Oh, and the wet coffee grounds? So what! It makes emptying the portafilter a little messier so just be careful to avoid drips and spills.Clean up is a snap and I love the large drip tray. Just remember to run the hot water for a few seconds after using the steamer/frother.I have no regrets for choosing this machine, and it looks great on my counter, too!*****UPDATEAfter 11 months my heating element or thermostat went out. I tried to resolve with Breville but had a difficult time. After 2 weeks I got them to send me a shipping label so I could return for repair. First they said a new machine would be sent in 7-10 days, then 3-4 days. I was happy. Now, after waiting for 2 more weeks, I find out that it's going to be an additional 4 weeks before my machine will even be shipped! I still love my Breville and can't wait to have it back. However, this experience my steer me toward other brands in the future.

Product is not 12 ounces
June 1, 2016
I received a smaller version of the one depicted. I thought I was ordering a 12 ounce and I received a version that only holds a few ounces. I would not purchase if you are trying to buy a 12 ounce.

January 30, 2016
Is an ok cup, i should have gotten something a bit larger, but that was my bad.steaming with a really small cup is never a good idea. Too easy to over flow as you stretch, handle is a bit small.
Be prepared to wait weeks for delivery
January 11, 2016
I ordered this for Christmas but it took weeks to come (from China) and when it came it was smaller than expected. I had to give my daughter my own frothing pitcher so she had one for her espresso make she got for Christmas, so now I have this small one which I do not like. I will probably buy another one. I marked it as 3 start because it took longer to come than anything I have ever purchased from Amazon.
It got here.... finally.
December 4, 2015
It got here.... finally. It shipped from overseas, and the quality just isn't what I expected. It is smaller than I was expecting and the metal a lot thinner. It does the job, but I wouldn't buy this one again.
Perfect size for a Doll House
October 30, 2014
Chock it up to user error but this is so tiny it really has no purpose other than to be pencil pot. I guess I really don't envision measurements in my head very well because it clearly does say 12 ounces but again I'm sort of lulled into thinking it is something larger by the picture. Not the product's fault, it's mine but I'm not giving it 5 stars only because something this small should only be sold in the toy department as something to be used in a doll house.
It's a steel pitcher... nothing fancy.
August 12, 2013
The price was right, I needed something to froth my milk in for my latte... this is steel, it fits on my espresso machine - life is good.If you're picky about the craftsmanship... move on, you can see where the handles are soldered on to the pitcher... it's not crazy sloppy, but it's not perfectly neat and hidden either.I'm usually in my housecoat when I make my morning coffee, no contacts in either... so does detail really matter? it works, it's clean and it's the perfect size for me. Thanks a latte! haha

losing half a cup water each time i use for some reason. the steamer is good but doesnt work as a frother so i had to buy a seperate frother. if i dont warm up the cups separately in the microwave the coffee is not hot enough. Other than that the coffee tastes great. It really squeeze the oil out from the coffee and leaves a nice foamy brown and light brown oil layer on the top of the cup.after about 2 months using it now we are experiencing very slow dripping of the coffee.
Disappointing
January 14, 2016
We are fans of Breville espresso machines- this is the third we've had. But compared to the other two models (one the Barista Express and an older machine similar to this one) the 800ESXL doesn't make particularly good espresso. We ground up half a pound of good beans trying to find a grind that would pull a decent shot, but could only get coffee that was too weak or a grind that the pump couldn't push water through. This was a warehouse purchase so perhaps it was just a bad one.
Poor functioning right after 1 yr warranty expired
December 5, 2015
This is my 2nd Breville espresso machine - the first one was great and lasted a long time. The replacement had problems right after the measly 1 year warranty ran out. Espresso is watery, no crema, and not that warm. No change on my side in terms of cleaning, coffee, grinding, tamping or water. For $400 I expect a machine to last longer than a year. Very disappointed.

September 14, 2015
This is my third Breville and the fit and finish on this current Breville 800 model feels inexpensively made. The water drawer does not slide in and out easily and the knob to direct espresso and steam making turns with difficultly. It is evident that Breville has trimmed material and manufacturing quality in order to stay price competitive while maintaining margins. I'm disappointed with this machine's lack of quality feel that my previous Brevilles had.
Breville 800ESXL
May 15, 2015
It makes better coffee in comparison to a cheaper expresso machine. But the biggest problem with it is, it doesn't heat the coffee very well. The temperature of the coffee is not hot enough. So you have to nook the milk to have a hot cup of coffee. Also it takes to long for the water to heat up. Once I learned how to use the machine, it made a decent cup of Joe. I wouldn't recommend this particular machine to anyone. But another Breville expresso machines may be a better choice. On the plus side I love the way it looks.
thermoblock is questionable
November 30, 2012
Had the 800esxl for 5 years - used it frequently, say 6 times a week. The espresso was fine, inconsistent heat, triple prime occasionally watered things down (3 stars for a $400 machine) - but the big problem came 5 years in when the thermoblock started leaking at the seams. There is no 'repair' for this - you have to replace it, and this is where my 2 stars come in - Breville does not make the parts for this machine any longer! Their customer service acknowledged this and had no explanation as to why - they did offer me 20% off a new unit (That's about retail at any Brick n Mortar store, woohoo, big deal). So, buyer beware Thermoblock is a questionable design in my opinion. I figured I would get more than 5 years out of a $400 appliance that basically spits out hot water - BTW I passed on a new Breville, um, forever.

Not so good.
October 21, 2016
Handle is badly soldered on, rust will appear very quickly, and this thing is not large at all. Don't trust high ratings or best seller status. This thing is not good. I wish Amazon did a better job of dealing with this type of item and its perceived greatness.
Smaller than I Expected
June 10, 2016
This cup was quite a bit smaller than the size that was in the product description. I had purchased it to make lattes with my espresso machine, but because it is so small, it won't work for my intended purpose. I saw no sharp edges, as others have reported, and it seemed very nicely made, but I was very disappointed that the size was not 12 oz.I received this item at a discounted price in exchange for an honest review.
be careful that you don't drink the black polish.
February 21, 2016
polish was still present. at first, I was wondering what the black residue was on my hand but quickly found that it was all over the outside of the pitcher when I wiped with a clean cloth. then I found it on the inside!!! also, there were nicks and unpolished specks on the outside of this item. this is definitely not quality work at hand.
The handle feels like it could easily be broken off
February 14, 2016
This is a cute little baby pitcher. It is tiny though we have only used it once or twice. The handle feels like it could easily be broken off... which would be awful if it was full of hot liquid when it does happen. This item also took weeks to finally show up.
Poor quality, and really too small for proper frothing
November 13, 2015
Poor build quality on this. The stainless has several blemishes in this. I intended this as a gift, but it's not up to standard for that, as it almost looks used. Plus, 12 oz is really too small for proper frothing. Get an 18 oz or larger size. The low price bumps this up from 1 start to 2.
Get a larger size.
December 27, 2014
Got this for my new espresso machine. I should have measured how much 12 ounces is; this is way way too small. When you steam milk, the volume doubles to triples, meaning that you would have to start with at most 4 ounces of milk. Since this pitcher is tall and narrow, the steamer wand was too short to reach into the bottom of this, which meant that I either ended up with too much froth (I prefer lattes rather than cappucinos, so want more milk than froth), or ended up overflowing the pitcher and didn't have enough milk at that, to make the lattes I wanted.I ended up buying a larger (24 0z), wider milk pitcher which works better, as there's enough room for enough milk to actually fill my mug after steaming it.

Steaming wand dies after a year and no one from Breville cares
December 11, 2016
THE STEAMING WAND DIES AFTER ABOUT A YEAR OF USE.Breville's website is absolutely horrible. You can't email customer support and most of their links are broken. I don't recommend this item, and am not expecting anyone from Breville to reach out to me to fix this. I've had this machine for about a year and unfortunately the pump on the steaming wand no longer works at all now.I tried to reach out to them but there is no email address on their site. Ridiculous because I don't have time to call them and sit on hold for an hour.
800Esxl poor machine, customer support is worse
October 31, 2016
Poor machine, poor execution. I bought this with the smart pro grinder as well. Do yourself a favor and check out a Google search, you will see all the issues customers have with this model and the double wall baskets. People have to actually spend additional money to hack the machine to work properly. They have had issues with this as far back as 2008 and still haven't got it right.Customer support is worse. Three calls to customer support, all three people had different reasons why the machine wasn't working properly. Of course none of thier suggestions corrected the issue.
It's super loud too
May 19, 2016
I bought this as a replacement for my DeLonghi that stopped working. I was completely dissatisfied with the performance. the lack of auto stop for the espresso shot, the way this machine leaves the grounds in a sloppy mess and randomly drips. It's super loud too. I was contemplating returning it, but 5 cups later my decision has been made for me. The pump stopped. 5 cups "successfully" made. I seriously think that a machine that is over $300 would be a little better quality than this. It's a coffee maker for gods sake.
What a dissapointment
May 19, 2014
For a machine in this price class the Breville 800ESXL is a terrible disappointment. The coffee is not only mostly burnt, after four months of use the pressurized basket started clogging up (even though it's cleaned daily) - After ordering a replacement basket directly from Breville the machine worked for 2 weeks, also only producing mediocre coffee. Now both baskets are clogged, using the Breville Espresso Cleaning Tablets will get you about 4 mediocre shots of coffee and then chewable coffee gew, don't even start expecting crema.I want my old cheap cuisinart back.
Disappointed in the Machine
December 3, 2013
I ordered an open box item from Amazon Warehouse at a good discount. We received the espresso maker a day early (Thanks Amazon). Unfortunately, after watching video after video online we realized the machine didn't work as it was supposed to. It would start with a nice drip of espresso then about three seconds into it...SPRAY espresso everywhere. Not sure what was going on, but after two hours that was enough. It is also VERY loud. We are in the process of returning this one and giving a Gaggia machine a try. Good luck!
No Third Try for Me
February 8, 2011
I have owned two of these Breville 800ESXL espresso makers. I liked the first one quite a bit, but it broke down - stopped heating the water - after a little more than a year. Since I liked the machine, and hoping I'd just been unlucky with the first one, I purchased a second one. It has now stopped heating water after 11 months. I make about three cups a day, and maybe this machine just isn't designed to last more than a year or so at that rate. But my preference is for something that lasts a quite a bit longer than that, particularly at the price of four of five hundred dollars for an esspresso maker. So I'll be looking elsewhere in the future.

Flimsy, pitted, very poor quality
July 10, 2017
This was a reorder. First batch was good enough for what they cost and appeared to be machine made and were of sufficient quality stainless to do the job. However, the second set ordered was a different product (shape, appearance, metal thickness). These pitchers were hand hammered, full of small pits on the inside and very flimsy. The pits appeared to have oxidation in them. Not safe for use. Very poor quality pitchers. First batch appeared to be made in China. This second batch said Made in India. Returning them for refund.
Big disappointment
June 12, 2017
I can't tell you how disappointed I am in this product it advertised a 12oz it clearly can't be bigger than 10 oz. I've emailed the seller and have not gotten a response yet. Gets one star simply for being stainless.

Great for your child plastic kitchen but not for your REAL kitchen
May 15, 2016
Really bad product, not worth it since this pitcher is tiny and takes long time to deliver to deliver from China (took over 4 weeks to deliver). I bought another one because this one was so small and defiantly not 12oz. I messaged the seller and his answer was that nothing to do about it.Summary: avoid it and buy one with primeIn the picture you can see this product on the right vs a real 12oz one on the left that was only $1 more
Do not buy!
February 18, 2016
The stainless finish on this jug is poor, in fact it looks unfinished. The handle looks like it is ready to rust. I get the impression this jug has been used for years.
