Such a great deal! The roto hammer has lots of power and fits very comfortably in your hand. The added grinder for an extra 30$ Is the icing on the cake, great tools. I'm never disappointed with makita!

Great kit. We bought this to do some brick exposure and other drilling jobs (cores) in holes.I suppose if I could fault it in any way, it is that it is SPS plus, not max. I may be wrong, but it seems like there are more options with the max interface, and there are reducers for that way, while converters for plus to accept max are VERY expensive. But you know what you're getting when you're buying this, so I can't fault it at all in terms of stars. Im always happy with Makita. Our Home Depot rents these too, so I assume they're pretty tough given that...

WORKS PERFECTLY
great chipper
July 18, 2013
-----I was weary about getting this small rotary hammer drill, but i'm glad I bought this one opposed to a larger model after having a chance to use it allot. I am not a contractor, but used this to pull up 4 layers of linoleum glued to my slab. I pulled it off of my kitchen floor in about an hour. I then chipped the floor with it to get the glue off and actually broke a chisel due to fatigue. I also used this to pull sheet rock that was glued to a few large headers and also drill 5/8 dia holes in concrete (a little slow, maybe 15-30 seconds but ok if your not doing them day in and day out). I also used it to break up stucco to put in a few new windows. The reason im glad I bought a smaller hammer drill is that it would have been too cumbersome to do the above with a large drill (except drilling the hole). I think there is a place for a small rotary hammer drill and a large one, but for the homeowner, a smaller one will be a better selection because it doesnt weigh that much and will see allot more use.----I would also recommend getting a "sds plus to 1/2" chuck adapter" and a "jacobs chuck" so you can use this a regular drill if you only have one drill. I wouldnt recommend using the chuck adaptor and a jacobs chuck in rotary hammer now to drill small holes with masonary bits that do not have sds plus shanks. You will end up breaking the chuck, I broke a chuck on the very first 3/16 hole I tried drilling.----I hope this review helps someone.
Not a bad but at all.

Dont have much to say only that they're both great tool for the price. This Makita combo is really not a bad idea.

Peeled up the old tile like butter with the wide tile blade
Sooo much better than a drill with a hammer setting
March 21, 2017
Sooo much better than a drill with a hammer setting. Drills through concrete so much faster I can't believe it took me this long to buy one. Been drilling dozens of 1/2 inch holes in a foundation for rebar pins. Just the right size to fit into a 2 foot wide trench and sink 6 inch holes in the sides.
Usually buy Hilti but rented this Makita from Home Depot and had to buy one!

I own a construction company and we own several hammer drills but this tool is the right tool for the right job, not to big but very powerful yet small enough to still incorporate into some of our larger jobs, it will not be one of those tools that you purchase and it sits on a shelf.
I love small tools with power like this one hammerdrill

Compact, smooth, powerful.200+ feet of concrete chipping no sweat
turns concrete to butter

Drilled well over 300 holes in 2 days 6" deep in garage floor concrete to install a CrossFit rig. used 1 drill bit for first 200 holes and swapped to new bit. Bosch bulldog, could have easily used same bit for both bot for $10 why not go faster!each hole drilled as fast as a drill would go into wood. Almost no vibration and very very low dust I just set vacuum hose near hole and hold it with my foot. Barely any chipping at all when starting the hole with minimal finesse!worth triple the cost!!!!!!

Good stuff
Good drill - poor choice of kit item with the cord angle grinder
October 27, 2014
The drill is very light in weight for one that can drill up to a 1-1/8 inch size hole in concrete. It is also half the size of a SDS Max hammer drill so it is easier to use in tight spaces. The drill has three settings so it can be used hammer only, hammer and drill, and drill only. Most drills of this sort have only hammer modes and are not a good choice for drilling in cinder block or brick as they are likely to crack it (diamond core bit is a better choice with these materials). There is noticeable run-out with the drill so holes will be larger than the diameter of the drill bit. The trigger is very long and so it is very difficult to hold the drill without powering the head. I find myself unplugging the drill a lot more often as a result of this flaw. The kit comes with a cord 4-1/2" angle grinder which is a waste for me. I already have two angle grinders and do not need a third. It would have been better to include the Makita keyless chuck for the drill which might be useful instead of the angle grinder that I will be giving away.Case for the drill is standard one from Makita and the space for the hammer drill places the cord above the space for the drill bits. I added a board to protect the cord but it is a kludge of a design - not unusual with Makita whose product managers put very little thought into the cases for their non-pro level power tools. For a well designed and engineered case one needs to buy a Milwaukee power tool.I have had this in heavy use drilling holes in concrete for rebar and anchors and drilling 1" holes for PVC pipe over the past 6 months and it has held up very well. At the price it is a very good value for a SDS hammer drill. The rotary aspect is limited as the drill does not provide as much torque as my 1/2" stud drills and the handle makes it unsafe for that type of use in wood.In concrete I found that 90% of the time I needed the hammer action even with smaller diameter drill bits in green or cured concrete. I had expected to better performance with the rotary only mode to avoid blowing out the back of concrete walls but this has turned out to not be practical with the greatly extended drilling time and limited torque.
original bits

it's a very good tool work perfectly but 4 star because makita don't sell this product with bits this product should come with at least one original makita bit

Very nice hammer drill for limited commercial use, especially at the price.
April 17, 2015
I used this drill for light commercial work. I own a pest control company, and use this drill for drilling concrete slabs for termiticide injection. I came from a larger firm and used an expensive dewalt for the last decade before I bought this 3 years ago. At first, the smaller, weaker drill gave me concerns. Once I realized I couldn't (and shouldn't) lean on it, the drill became much easier to use. Holes take maybe a few seconds longer to drill than with the dewalt, at 1/3 the price (and weight). I may upgrade eventually, but with the limited termite work I perform, (5 or 6 jobs a month, as opposed to 3 jobs every day with my prev. employer), I will wait until it breaks or I need more juice. So far it hasn't met a slab it couldn't tackle.

I have purchased this item over 2 years ago and it still works great. I am in the construction industry and use this all the time. I have no problems with this and would highly recommend this.
Great Roto Hammer - Depth gauge and T-handle need work.
July 29, 2011
Pros -Love it. Plenty of power. Even for making holes to hold 1" diameter all-thread, a foot deep, into dense concrete. Over and over. The LED is one of those "why doesn't every single tool ever have this built in" items. Makes setting wedge anchors for a deck as easy OR EASIER than drilling the holes in your wood ledger board. This thing makes concrete drill like wood. Nice grip, easy to manuver once the handle is set.Cons -The dept gauge can't be set on the same side of the hammer as the rotary Hammer/Drill switch. Otherwise you lose the ability to set it to drill 'deep'. The big bummer is that the depth guage is permenantly attached at 180 degrees from the T-handle grip. So adjusting the T-handle to make it fit between joists rotates the depth gauge. No big deal so far. When you rotate the handle to the users right side of the tool (to use it right handed, upside down, when you're drilling at ground/dirt/pavement level), the depth guage hits the rotary Hammer/Drill switch unless it's extended way out (making it useless if you're drilling multiple holes the same depth). Plus, the rotating collar for the handle is a bit of a pain to slide around. It has notches on it that are great for holding it in place, but a pain to quickly rotate around.
Great drill; handle design is weak
June 11, 2011
Drills holes in concrete very well and very fast. Nice and light; easy to handle. The LED is very handy if you're working in a murky basement corner. The drill works and feels just like a much larger Hilti. My only complaint is the handle. It's mostly plastic and comfortably ergonomic, but somewhat flimsy. Doesn't stay tight if used for an extended period. I would buy the tool again though, handle notwithstanding.
good but not great!
October 15, 2010
Drills in concrete like drilling in foam plastic...Does it very well. Comes with nice case. Uses standard fluted rotary hammer bits also made by other manufactures. However, the depth gauge slips and can cause one to drill too deep. Must rotate grip handle to return to case..a clumsy affair do to poor design. Their MAY be better choices.

Depth gauge issue
May 6, 2017
Worked well but depth gauge requires a lot of effort / torque to properly lock in place. Would not recommend if you frequently change depth of holes during same job.
Ok for 0.5" holes and below. Can't take high duty cycle use
September 5, 2016
After drilling a number of one-off holes around the house (1/2" in concrete...) over several months without problem, I used it to drill 3/4" 12" holes in soft-ish sandstone. After about 20 holes it heated up and croaked. The stator windings got bend out of shape, and the speed control electronic probably partially fried. Have to buy $120 worth of parts to revive it... Clearly not a heavy duty drill, poor heat management, for holes no larger than 1/2"
Lightweight and effective though underpowered for use with 1-1/8 inch drill bits
May 2, 2015
It is a good hammer drill for the price. I used it over a period of several months on a project where it was used to make 4" deep holes in concrete and cinder block for rebar and at the end it was decidedly loose with its drill bit chuck and had a lot of lateral play that generated runout with the drill bit. Powerwise it definitely needs the hammer action or it will stall out even with 1/2" x 16" drill bits. Using a new Hitachi 1-1/8 inch drill bit the Makita drill struggled even in cinder block. The drill is best suited for holes in the 1/2 to 7/8 inch range if there is any depth to them.
It's nice but not worth the price
August 21, 2014
The bit wobbles too much. But every SDS rotary hammer dirll I tested did the same. It's nice but not worth the price. I ended up with a smaller 5/8" Milwaukee SDS rotary hammer drill, which cost about $100 less, and actually drills faster.

Bought as used, but was like new. Fast shipment. The only complaint I have is about the depth gage and handle it is mounted in. The handle will not stay tight as you drill and this what is supposed to hold the depth gage in position so this feature is basically useless.I drilled about 20 7/8" holes with it in concrete to set anchors in and it did an fair job. Not the best drill I have used.

User Overview
  • Awesome suction

I owned both vacuums. The Makita is lighter, easier to use, the battery does not keep popping out like in the Dyson (I hated having to keep hitting the battery and restart the vacuum) and the suction is comparable. I will have to buy the carpet nozzle to figure out the pet hair issue (the floor nozzle does not do a good job with pet hair). Dyson picks up the pet hair very well.
