OMG read my updates... Direct lan to laptop to his device SCREAMS.
April 20, 2017
Wow I had never read the 1 star reviews. I likely would not have bought one. But I did... works GREAT except I tried direct LAN connection to my laptop and that doesn't work. (maybe user error? might have to configure it in settings)? I'll look into that.I run a observatory in my yard. 300+ feet from my router. I have 5G and 2.5G on the router. (cable internet). I could BARELY connect to the 2.5 300+ feet away. I got this for 1/2 way... but first time I tried it I just plugged it in next to the laptop 300+ feet out. It picked up good signal and was giving the laptop 5 bars. Works great. MY PROBLEM is my laptop is old and has slow wifi. So I want to try direct LAN connection. I got 50mbs in the house and 10 at the laptop. I may have to get a faster/newer laptop. Many reviews say it died in a couple months. I'll report back if mine does.UPDATE OMG! I worked on the LAN connection. Seems I had a bad cable. It's now working, My speedtest.net went from 15mbps to 66 mbps!!! Now that LAN is working - I'm going from 4 to 5 stars!PS - I think the 1 star reviews are user/error.
Excellent product - A must have for extending your wifi!!
February 23, 2017
I had terrible wifi reception in my bedroom. I'd have five bars in the front of the house but in my bedroom/bathroom at the back of the house I had one, maybe two bars at most. I don't have cable tv so all my entertainment/news/internet is done over wifi. This product is amazing! Very easy to install, took less than five minutes start to finish and now I have five bars in my bed/bath all the time! If you need an extender I highly recommend this one. It is fantastic. Just follow the instructions, no wire/cable necessary for installation. I live in a 1,200 sq ft condo for reference.
simple setup and great range after

This review is for NETGEAR N300 Wi-Fi Range Extender, Essentials Edition (EX2700)by NetgearMy friend asked me to solve his networking issues because his house had been added on to and the back wall to his living room is brick which leads to the rest of his house which prevents the wifi signal from being very good just on the other side of this wall.Luckily he had an outlet in the hallway leaving the living room and so this was what I got him to solve his issues. This was very easy to configure, after plugging this is and letting it power on completely, the power LED on the device will be green, I logged onto the local website to configure it and it was up and running. It took longer for my friend to decide what he wanted as the security questions / answers then it did for any other part of installing this.Great item with easy install and that is why I give this five stars.I really hope that this review was helpful to you, if it was, please take the time a click yes below, thanks.
A Wonderful Convenience!
April 16, 2016
They keep coming out with exciting products. I am old enough to have been wildly ecstatic over the wireless phone for land lines. And years ago when I saw the first wifi at my sister's house (an Apple Airport) I was astounded! Wireless computers too? It took me a long time to jump on the smart phone band wagon, but I finally did three years ago. When I was in college I never dreamed I would be able to put a computer, tv, radio, book reader, game machine, etc. all in one pocket. I wouldn't have believed it if Einstein (had he been alive) had told me it would happen. While this doesn't equal the inventions of smart phones and wifi it sure makes wifi devices usable in all parts of my house. I am pretty sure I could sit in my car outside with the windows and doors shut (not that I would normally do that) and it would work. I will try that tomorrow and if it doesn't work I will come back and edit this paragraph. I am delighted with this extender. It's one more thing that makes life less stressful. Isn't that something we all want? (I have no problem with coming back to edit this review if things go bad).
and am very happy with it
January 5, 2016
I've used this for a month now, and am very happy with it. It replaces a Diamond range extender that had become unreliable; it would lose connectivity every time the microwave was used for more than a couple of minutes. I would have to reconnect the satellite box, the Blu-ray player, and the Roku box several times each week, and suffered occasional buffering when the Diamond slowed down. I have a 20 MPS connection through Centurylink DSL (fastest available in my neighborhood), so I didn't have a lot to spare once an extender cut the speed in half. This has proven to be both reliable AND more effective. The receiver portion seems to be more sensitive, so I was able to put the extender in a more convenient location and still receive an excellent signal from the router. All three of my internet-capable video devices show a stronger signal and faster downloads. Amazon went from a 5 MPS average to an 8 MPS average, and Netflix went from 3 MPS to 6 MPS. I can now watch Netflix HD without down-res or buffering.Setup was extremely easy using WPS. Simply plug in, wait a couple of minutes for the unit to boot, then push the WPS button on the extender. You then have two minutes to push the WPS button on your router, and the extender connects. You can then go to your devices and do a search for Wifi networks -- there will be at least one and possible two showing: one will have your original network with a "2" suffix and the other will have your original network name with a "5" suffix. Both will use the same password as your Wifi router. Pick the one with the stronger signal or the one that best meets your needs. The "2" band has a longer range but may suffer from more interference from microwaves or fluorescent lights; the "5" band may have a weaker signal at long ranges but will be less prone to interference.Very happy with it so far -- the extender is about 40 linear feet from the router, through one ceiling and floor, one wall, and several cabinets. It is about 25 feet from the AV cabinet, and all of the devices report a strong signal with acceptably fast downloads.
Great extender with ridiculously easy setup, best value out there
August 29, 2014
I purchased one of these for my technology-challenged parents who have a rather large house and their wifi router upstairs. Lots of duct work, pipes, wiring, etc. between the router (in the FAR upper left corner of the house) and the devices in their kitchen, on the deck, in the garage, etc.The extender was up and running in less than 5 minutes, WPS setup with their TrendNet router could not have been easier. Wifi signal downstairs immediately doubled, or better. Devices that were registering Poor signal with 1-5MBps connections now show excellent and 65MBps+.I highly recommend this device for anyone who has dead spots, routers upstairs or in the basement or anyone who just needs to extend their G/N wireless signal.

Excellent WiFi Booster

Very easy set up! And the repeater aspect of this "refurb" unit is just the same or maybe even better for people looking to extend their wireless situation. I don't see why anyone would buy new on a unit that is "brand new" with the serial number not blacked out! LOL I know, they must like that "new WiFi Smell" Seriously a fine unit and adequate for most family needs!
Review of PRODUCT (5) and TWO sellers (1) and (5) There is a difference!!
April 24, 2014
I bought the first one from EMBIZ; delivered on time, in filthy, 'refurb' internal package, a broken antenna and not one word of install docs, a non-pro box sealing. I suspect that it was a prior return that they did not even open to inspect. I returned it to Amazon instantly; No Way! ($37.45)Interim reading elsewhere convinced me that the basic product was ideal for my needs, so re-ordered from Amazon using Deal-Fisher and bought TWO ($37.95 each). What a difference! Pristine, production line boxing, More than enough docs to install properly, No broken parts, and a brief warranty statement from Netgear - all as expected. (At a whopping $2.37, I also bought a two year warranty, but I'm not worried.)What I think: EMBIZ just reshipped a return without looking at the contents. DealFisher sold "New" Refurbished product, complete with 'factory' inclusions. Take your pick, but $0.50 is worth a lot, here. The NetGear WN3000RP itself: If properly installed, this products works well and exactly as advertised. I am pleased and BOTH units work just fine. The installation process is NOT intuitive and a little guidance is necessary, especially if using TWO+ extenders from the same base router. That said, if the naming procedures are changed, Two or even more extenders CAN be used without problems. Yes, there is a speed penalty for using a range extender. However, when the basic ISP's rate is about 5.5 MB/sec and the home network's rate is about 300 Mb/sec, cutting it by half is a drop that most users will never see. The WN3000RP gizmo works just fine, for me, both in the house and even shooting and 'excellent' signal, through thick walls and 150+ yards away. After installing two of these, I have to believe that the majority of the returns - those that become "Factory Refurbished" units sold at ~half price, are the result of users who did not read the Installation Guide. Duh! For the most part, one can skip the much longer and redundant User's Manual, just read and understand the Installation Guide. The Questions section on this site poses several questions about using more than one WN3000RP on a single network - and the answers are all over the place. The short answer is YES, If course you can! Some simple Name Changes are necessary, but no more. This gizmo likes to name the extended connection either Netgear(nn)_EXT or (ExistingNetworkName(nn)_EXT, where (nn) is a number to count the extensions. Whatever you name yours, it will appear on your list of available connections. [My suggestion is to use (ExistingNetworkName(nn)_EXT to make it easier to recognize that you are on your home network. Obviously, dense urban areas are different from isolated, rural networks just looking for some distance and having little need for security and encryption. The fewer used, the faster the service - and the great your exposure. Copying the existing configuration - an install option is a good place to begin; If you can, eliminating all encryption makes it even easier. (Depending upon where your network is located, talk to your ISP's tech folks. (At ~ten miles from a neighbor and >1 mile from a pass-by road that I can see, do I care about eavesdroppers? Unless it is the N.S.A., I'll see them before they can connect.) In the end, the is an excellent product. When used per the instructions it will provide greatly extended range for your private network. If security is necessary, it will also reproduce the common encryption types, link-to-link, though at some theoretical speed loss. Different security applications for each link may be possible, but that is above my pay-grade and, in the even of a power failure, could be cumbersome to reload. For the user with modest skills, but who can read and follow directions, this refurbished (essentially virgin) unit and at the price is a legitimate steal. If you have a large home, thick walls, or need to cover distance between buildings, this unit - properly installed, MAY be a far better deal than an expensive set on antennae and/or a new router. It works well for me. My only regret was the first vendor, EMBIZ, and I think they just had a bad day. Amazon it looking after the details - if they do not, you'll here about it here.
Works great. Easy set up.

I recently purchased a Netgear Rangemax WNR 1000 Router which did not provide coverage throughout our house. The house is 3,500 sf and 80 years old with plaster and lath walls and solid construction which makes coverage of any wireless signal a challenge. I purchased this Range Extender to try to cover as much of the house as I could. In reality the extended range exceeded my expectations by covering not only the rest of the house but also the entire yard in front of the house. The Router is in the back of the house and covers most of the back yard. The Range Extender is plugged in the front foyer next to the stairs. There is a hallway that goes directly from the back room to the foyer so it has a direct broadcast to the extender.Set up was fast and easy. The unit was up and running within 5 minutes and enabled on 2 phones, an ipad, a Kindle and a laptop within 10 minutes. The unit was 'found' on an ipad which then opened a set up window to choose a password and a series of other parameters. Once that was set it was just a matter of going to each device's wireless settings, click the Range Extender and enter the password. Any reduction in connection speed has been negligible. The connection and activity lights on the unit are easily visible.I was being cheap when I purchased the Rangemax Router hoping that this low cost unit would cover most if not all of the house. But even with the addition of the Range Extender the combined cost is still below that of a more powerful and expensive router that probably would have provided the coverage.
Easy to set up and works well

My wireless router is in a basement room, and there are two stories above it. We had very minimal signal on the far end of the second floor, where the master bedroom is located, and spotty signal in a few areas on the main level. I got this unit based on reviews and the price for the refurbished unit. When I got it, the directions were virtually non-existent. The directions were to download them from the Netgear website. Fortunately the directions were available and very straightforward. I followed them exactly, and the unit was successfully connected on the first try. I then carried the unit upstairs to a room with an available outlet where my cell phone's wireless connection indicated that I had "two bars." After plugging in the Range Extender and waiting one minute for the device to "boot" it began to broadcast a nice strong signal.Something I was not expecting - this device creates a totally new second network. It is named whatever your network is named with an underscore EXT. For example, if your network is named SmithNetwork, the extended network is called SmithNetwork_EXT. No big deal. The new network will have the same security settings as your primary network. My kindle, cell phone, laptop, etc connects easily and with a very stable connection. What I was not expecting was that new, second, network would broadcast a stronger signal into some parts of my house where there was already satisfactory signal. You can override this on your device (the laptop, in my case). You might want to do this because the documentation for the device states that the new network will be a tad bit slower than the main network. (I haven't noticed any difference, but that is what the documentation says.)A side benefit to the good signal upstairs is that this device appears to have resolved an issue where my son's PS3, when online, would occasionally create a conflict with the wireless signal for DirecTV, No clue why this is no longer an issue, but it is a welcome one for me.I have to recommend this unit to anybody who wants a strong network signal in areas of there house where are dead spots.
Made a major difference
February 1, 2014
Was a little hesitant - how could this work, but the AT&T guy said this is what they sell. I tried it and it has made a world of difference. Our Modem is in the basement. I placed this in the outlet on the first floor which is what they recommend. The signal to the rest of the house is A LOT better. Definitely worth a try.
Works great after 1+ yrs of use. Better performance than USB adapter. Easy Setup.
January 20, 2014
I grabbed these because they allowed me to utilize some wall outlets in between my router and my PC. I have a small house, there are two rooms in between my room and the room the router is installed in and I had a weak to moderate signal before installing this extender. I run a pc/networking service and have installed a few of these for my clients and use them at my own home.I've been using this extender for about a year and have had virtually no issues with dropped connections or speed issues. I have a 40mbps connection (40 down / 5 up) and I'm able to get at least 80-90% of my bandwidth speeds using this extender.Tips for best connection using this product.1. Use an extension cord or surge protector to elevate the device and its antennas. (Or check your house for high/accessible power outlets)- This can help to raise it above other devices and house objects that would otherwise obstruct or interfere with reception on lower wall outlets. I have an elevated surge protector behind my television that I placed this extender on since my wall outlets are pretty low to the ground in my house.2. If convenient, make use the Ethernet connection.-It will maintain a very stable connection if your primary device is a PC and if the extender is already set up to connect to your router then it will work right after you plug it into your PC's ethernet port.3. The device will often automatically open to the setup page in your browser after its powered on and you've connected your device to the new wireless network name it creates. (NETGEAR_EXT by default)- If for whatever reason it doesn't, check the user manual and it will help with most troubleshooting/installation questions.User Manual can be found here: [...]Overall, great little device. Like I said I purchased the one I'm using in Nov. 2012 and its still going strong. I've also installed this in other houses for clients of mine and they've been happy with the results of the connection strength in comparison to their previous setups.

Very effective
June 19, 2017
This little unit has really helped my wifi reception in my back yard and shop. Where I was not getting good signal or any at all, I am now getting a strong signal and speeds seem to be fine. The only thing I don't like is that it operates on a different network than my main wifi, so when I walk back into the house, if I get too far away from this range extender and need to be back on the original network, I have to manually switch back. But for the price, I can't complain.
Works but hand-holds people way too much during setup
April 4, 2017
Following the instructions was easy but being an expert I was a bit miffed at not being able to go into advanced/expert setup immediately. The device insisted on hand-holding me through the setup. That docked star is also for the device being completely stupid about username and password... it wanted an email address (blah@blah.blah) for the username and it wanted two recovery questions/answers. Ridiculous for a small device like this which one can reset to factory defaults with the push of a button.Once I got through that mess I was able to login in again, go to setup, and turn off the wifi relay function since I only want to use the device for its hard ethernet port to connect to an old TiVO. And that port works quite well, thank you.-Matt
Works well, easy set up, but requires foolish security questions
March 10, 2017
Works well. Easy set up, but no advanced options.Less than five stars because I was irritated by the fact that the router requires filling out security questions like my mothers maiden name. Those things are never secure and I certainly don't want personal information like that stored in a wifi device that may or may not be secure now or in the future. I know how to manage my passwords. Of course, you don't have to fill these fields out correctly, but you better make sure that what you do fill out is not easy to guess. I dislike being forced to use security questionsWhat I like very much on this device are the status lights. Their meaning is very clear and they work.
Range Extender works great once you figure out how to set it up
October 29, 2016
I purchased this to use as a range extender in a ranger style house that is brick and very solid. Currently the main router is in the basement and was not providing a strong enough signal throughout the house. Once I was able to finish the configuration of this signal strength was no longer issue. It works fantastic for that. The issue I had was that the set up was not as straight forward and easy as I had hoped. I am pretty IT savvy and normally these are not an issue but this one had me looking up troubleshooting tips on the internet. There are two issues that I found for the set up. First issue is that the instructions are not that well written and it does not tell you early on that this device has a static IP address assigned to it and it can not be changed. The reason that this can be an issue is that if you do not use the standard 192.168.1.X address scheme you will run into problems. I purposely change mine for security reasons to something like 192.168.24.X and limit the number of devices that connect by defining the number of IP addresses that can be assigned. Well, the static address assigned to this is 192.168.1.250. Make sure that that address can be seen in your router. The second issue is that you will have to make sure that your devices connect the SSID of your main wireless router as well as the new SSID of this wifi extender if the main one is out of range. I guess I was hoping the could leverage the same SSID name but that was not the case. One last point (which isn't really a drawback) is that a network cable is NOT included in the box so if you are planning on setting it up using the cable you will have to provide your own.
Returned 1st. 2nd Worked Great. Still Not Sure if all Devices are "Connected"
April 26, 2015
The 1st one I received was a dud. It kept powering OFF while I was trying to set up the network. Netgear tech support told me to return it, and Amazon was great about that. The second one connected right away as the instructions indicated. I'm moderately tech-savvy, so the instructions are very easy to follow, but I did have to carry my laptop into the room with my router to initiate this thing, as it requires that you plug the extender into a wall socket near your router the first time you set it up. Once I got an extender that worked, it was pretty simple. You *must* know your WEP key if you're using FiOS, so make sure you have that handy before you start. The only lingering question I have is whether or not all of my devices are connected to the extended network. You have to direct your devices to connect to the "new" network (this expander). So, I did this with my laptop & phone. Now my phone receives FULL signal in parts of my home where it previously would not. However....my wireless speakers and wireless surveillance cameras still seem to not be getting their full signal (which was the whole purpose in buying this), so I need to either go to web forums to research this question, or call Netgear again and find out if I'm supposed to reboot these systems, and how they will find this extended network. BTW...the first time I called Netgear, I got a tech person whose English I could not understand. So, I called back and got someone different, who still spoke with an accent, but it was much clearer to understand. So, if you need to call Netgear, don't get frustrated. Call back until you reach a person who you can understand, because they really are helpful.
The N300 Wi-Fi Range Extender works well after a few initial bumps.
January 7, 2015
The good news is that eventually the N300 Range Extender worked and does a good job. There are two ways to join the Range Extender to your network. You can use WPS or through your browser. I would have referred to use the browser method but the instructions on doing this were rather sketchy and I never could locate the Range Extender on my network in order to access on board configuration. Fortunately my router supported WPS so once I enabled that and followed the included instructions the status lights on the Extender turned green, indicating I was connected. I still did not see the Extender on my network in order to further modify the configuration, but I was able to look up the IP address in my router's device table. Using the IP I was able to connect to the Extender using my browser.Basically I wanted to change the default password to one of my own choosing. Also it wasn't clear to me that as a default the extended wi-fi connection was password protected, as my iPad connected without my having to enter a password. Finally, I wanted to disable WPS on my router again but to keep the Extender visible from my network. I must have done something wrong when I made all these changes, because suddenly I was no longer able to access the extender, either to get to the internet or to modify the configuration. In short I had to perform a factory reset in order to access the extender again.Once more, using WPS, I added the extender to my network. This time I took a more systematic approach. First I changed the password. That worked and I was still able to access the configuration model using the new password. Next I walked through the setup wizard which allowed me to set the the Extender to the same security settings as my router. This may have been the default anyway. I didn't check before I used the wizard. I was pleasantly surprised to see that most of my wi-fi connected devices were smart enough to log into the Extender without my having to re-enter the password as I connected them. So far so good. Next I disabled WPS on my router. As soon as I did so I was no longer able to access the Extender to change the configuration, although the range extender portion still worked. I checked my router and the Extender was no longer in its tables. I enabled WPS again and the extender showed up in the router tables again but with a different IP address. I went into Extender configuration utility and assigned the extender a static IP address. When I committed the change the Extender rebooted and when it came up I was no longer able to log on with my new or old password. After a few attempts I received a prompt asking for the devices serial number, which fortunately was on the box. Once I entered the serial number I was asked a couple security questions which I'd set up when I'd changed the password and it recovered the password and I was able to log on again. I hesitated to once more disable WPS on my router, but finally decided to chance it. This time Extender stayed visible. Hurrah.I moved the Extender to a distant portion of the house were the signal was weak, and after a few moments it booted up and all lights were green. The devices in that room that hadn't been able to connect due to a weak signal now connected and were happy. I was happy as well. The Extender has been working for a couple days now without complaint.I took off one star for feeble instructions, especially if you don't wish to connect using WPS. That said, I believe if I would have just stuck with WPS and left it at that the Extender would have worked fine pretty much out of the box. Although I'm still not sure if it would have been password protected by default at that point. Anyway, now it is working perfectly, so I'm happy.

It worked OK, more my problem than its problem
July 28, 2015
I was working in a place that had a very weak WiFi signal, and hoped this would boost it up to get it where I needed to be. It certainly extended the range, but the drop in speed was bad. It was a slower DSL connection to start with, then tried to put this on the outer edge of its coverage to extend it to my work area. I had read that you loose half your speed with one of these, so if you start really fast, then half speed will still be really fast, but if you start slow, this makes it really slow. It also would, at times, loose connection to the router, probably because it was on the edge of its coverage area. So might show you are connected to the extended network, but not getting anything because it is not, at that moment, connected to the main router. It was an OK solution for the summer, but looking at better options for the future.
Great solution for the wirelessly challenged
September 25, 2013
Bought this after battling with a "fair" to "poor" signal in the living room Roku. I am using primarily a Mac desktop (that's a computer they used to make to do things besides internet and email ;) through a questionable u-verse modem/router which will only support B or G wifi (not N). Since AT&T locks you into using their equipment, I've been trying to find a solution for literally years now. These failed attempts included replacing the modem and adding an N router to try and boost this signal. Fail. I bought this based on reviews, tried to set it up,failed, swore a lot, shut everything down including the modem and then, magically it all came together. I opted for the second setup option that didn't require me to ore-input new passwords for all wifi devices. After relocating wireless signals in my living, the Roku, for the first time, categorized the signal as "excellent". To summarize, it's a little vague in the setup department, but well worth it based on initial results. I'm now able to access wifi on my phone all the way to my mailbox, about 100 yards from the modem, 50 from the extender. Impressive.
For the Mac and Airport Extreme users
May 14, 2013
I bought a Manufacturer's Refurbished unit through Amazon.com. As a Prime member, it arrived in two days, on schedule. Packaging was easy to open and minimal (as all packaging should be). To my surprise (because I am a veteran techie), I was very confused by the documentation provided on Netgear's Web site as well as what little paperwork came in the box, i.e., none. (Their printed instuctions sent you to a Web page that had absolutely no visible clue to set-up the device.) However, I just rolled the dice and plugged the device into an electrical outlet and pressed the power button on the unit. I waited a few seconds and pressed the middle button (whatever they call it) to find my Airport Extreme wireless router. Nothing seemed to be working. So, I then clicked the wireless icon in my iMac's menu bar. I selected NETGEAR from the drop down list... bodda bing, bodda boom... Netgear opened a window, quickly and magically, which delivered a step-through process to get the Netgear wireless extender set-up and working. Airport users, that's all there is to it. The device seems to be working very well. It took my iMac (which is temporarily very far away from the Airport Extreme wireless router) from a 55% signal strength to more than 85% signal strength (according to WiFi Signal.app available in the app store). It's really too bad that Netgear doesn't provide a more visible means to convey set-up instructions for Mac and Airport Extreme users. For that reason they get only four stars.
Worked for me
February 7, 2013
I have a comcast xfinity arris all-in-one cable modem/wireless router. It works fine but it's set up at the very back of our long narrow townhouse in my office so I can connect my work PC with a ethernet cable. This meant the front half of the house has no wifi. I looked into a bunch of solutions including:Powerline adapters:http://www.amazon.com/Linksys-Powerline-Wireless-Extender-PLWK400/dp/B0087O6AQE/ref=sr_1_1?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1360259488&sr=1-1and coax adapters:http://www.amazon.com/Actiontec-Ethernet-Adapter-Service-ECB2500CK01/dp/B008EQ4BQG/ref=sr_1_1which looked to be more expensive, more complicated solutions. Because my modem and wireless router are combined I would have had to put the modem/router into a bridged mode and used 2 separate wireless routers to be able to spit the outside IP between two routers. It seemed like a lot of trouble. I liked the idea of a wifi extender that would just pass my original signal along without requiring a whole new configuration (or the need to buy expensive adapters and 2 new wifi routers).I found the refurbished extender for $40 and figured I'd give it a shot and maybe fallback to the coax adapters if it didn't work. The router arrived with a single sheet of paper telling me to go to the netgear website for instructions. I did and was able to set it up in about 5 minutes. I had no issues getting it to connect. I used the WPS feature on the routers to connect them without having to type in any settings. It's been a few weeks and its still working fine. I now have wifi all the way to the front of the house. It is not as fast as the wifi in the back of the house but I think that's to be expected. It occasionally drops, and occasionally I have to unplug the extender and replug to have it reboot so devices will connect to it. I've done this maybe 2-3 times in the last 3 weeks. It is fast enough that I can stream netflix/amazon instant videos to my tv over wifi with very occasional buffering.I know this product has mixed reviews- I took a chance and it payed off for me.
Read this if yours drops the connection
January 24, 2013
I've never written a review before, b/c I usually don't have anything to contribute that someone hasn't already said. This is an exception! If you're like me, this thing works great - when it's working. But the connection often drops, and seems to get worse with time. It has nothing to do with being too far from the router - when the right-most ("Link Rate") light is on, it's green. But the problem is that it often turns off intermittently (i.e. the connection breaks). As far as I can tell, that's the reason why the ratings from some are low on Amazon. You may also notice that the left-most (WPS) light flashes. This is actually what causes the problem. I have searched long and hard, and finally found a solution (buried in some forum, not here on Amazon). Now for 2 weeks I have not had a dropped connection once - all 4 lights are always solid green.Follow these steps. If you're like me, you're a tech idiot. This solution seemed to be too complicated and I actually didn't try it for a couple weeks because of that. But once I decided to do it, it took me less than 15 minutes, and it was the only thing that I found that worked consistently. I can tell you I spent a whole lot more time on other possibilities.1. Write down the "MAC" numbers/addresses for all the devices you want to be able to connect to the extender. I didn't have a clue what this number was, but I Google'd it and was able to find out how to get them for all my devices (iPhones, laptops, desktops). See step 6 below for another way to get them, too. It should actually be pretty easy. It is always the same for a particular device, like a digital serial number. Here's an example: B4:C2:5F:1C:08:712. Go into the extender's wireless settings website: (...)mywifiext.net. I believe(...)mywifiext.com also works. NOTE: You have to be successfully connected to the extender on the device you are trying to use first. Otherwise it will redirect you to the Netgear website. This caused me many headaches, because at that point I was hardly ever able to get it to stay connected long enough to work in the settings website, because the connection was so bad or kept dropping so frequently. It may help if you try to access it with another device, or to reset the connector and set it up again from scratch.3. Once you are in the settings website, go to "Advanced Wireless Settings".4. Click the "Setup Access List" button.5. Click the "Turn Access Control On" checkbox.6. Enter each of the MAC addresses that you wrote down earlier. If you had trouble finding them, you can actually go to the "Maintenance" tab of the settings website, and look for "Attached Devices" or "Network Devices". It will give you a list of MAC addresses that are currently connected to the extender - at minimum, the one your working on will show up.7. Save, and you should be good to go! I didn't even need to reset the extender or anything. It immediately worked, and has ever since.I don't believe you have to upgrade your firmware first to do this, but it might help. I upgraded first, hoping that alone would fix my problems. It did not, but the above steps did. It took me a long time to figure out how to upgrade the firmware, and to be able to stay connected long enough to do it. By God's grace my connection didn't drop while I was upgrading it. If I had to do it again, I would have done the above steps first. The drawback of this solution is that if you want another device to be able to use the extender, you have to add its MAC address to the list on the settings website. Once you do it once though, it is pretty easy to do. You will be solidly connected, so it's easy to work in the settings website once it's set up this way. This is another reason I hesitated to do this, but it's not too inconvenient and it's much less of a headache than dealing with dropped connections. The benefit is that (I assume) there is better security, since others can't possible use the extender unless their device is on the MAC list.I really hope this helps you out! It is my way of paying it forward because of all the wonderful solutions the internet has provided me over the years. I wish you didn't have to do this to get it to work well, so for that it gets 4 stars. Other than that, I believe it's a 5-star product. For those who care, I believe (from the source I read - I know nothing about this technical stuff) that this problem is due to interferences with other wireless signals in your area, particularly those with WPS security.
Great Money Saver Product
April 27, 2012
I live in a dorm / hotel situation where the WIFI connection was 2 bars at the best. I quickly figured out that my room was within the range of the router so I bought the Netgar range extender. I was sceptical at first but once I put it up in my room it was like magic. 2 bars are now solid 5 bars and I conect at 144 KBPS vs the 24 - 36 KBPS before. Only down side is that it goes to sleep and after 3-4 hours of inactivity and you have to reboot it each morning to release and renew the IP. Other that that it has been a life saver as I work from home and my VPN connections are robust now.

Little tricky to configure but onces its going it works!
May 8, 2017
Took me about an hour to configure and I'm pretty good at networking. It's finicky at one point after I get the wifi on the 2ghz then 5ghz not working. Took me a bit to figure it out (dont bother with the phone support they are useless if you have done the basics) The wired connection works well on the 2ghz but on the 5ghz it was timing out or all the packets were not transferring (using a wired printer) so it was a hassle once I switched it to the 2ghz no problems since. For the price it does what it needs but does exceed expectations
Yesss it works!!!

Downgraded to 3 stars AFTER Using it for a while. After using this extender for a while I downgraded my review to 3 Stars. All the things from my initial review is true BUT What I discovered is this thing is keep dropping the connection. I have to keep turning it on and off at least once a day and that blows.Yessssss I have internet in my garage. When we moved to our new L shaped brick home my garage was strategically located in the worst possible spoT for WiFi. I got this extender in. took 3 minutes to set up (plug & play) BAM ! I got internet. SPEED! That i don't know. I got super slow speeds where I live so not sure if the extender slowing things or not.
Stopped working after barely 2 months
February 7, 2017
Set up was easy and unit was working but in less than 60 days it stopped for no apparent reason. I tried to reset and troubleshoot but just no lights or any indicator it works. I've been a loyal Netgear customer... 5-6 routers and other devices over 10 years. Hope this is a fluke in quality control. Will reach out to Netgear to see if they would provide a replacement.Update: Netgear support kindly sent a replacement and since April I've had no issues with the new unit. Overall the unit works as advertised although every so often it needs a reboot.
My wireless router is on the first floor of my ...
March 30, 2016
My wireless router is on the first floor of my house but the signal isn't strong enough to keep a decent connection for my Xbox One on the second floor other side of the house. After reading other reviews I ordered the product and bookmarked a review with step-by-step instructions on how to set it up since others said the instructions were lacking. Once the product arrived, I had no problems getting the extender configured and running using those instructions posted in that review. After placing the extender on the second floor of the house the Xbox shows '3 bars' of signal strength for the wireless router but '5 bars' of signal strength for the extender. The extender delivers a solid signal to all of the wireless devices I connect to it but there are times where the Xbox drops the connection or has some lag. For the price of the product, it functions well.
Works but does not have outstanding range
October 28, 2015
The product is functional. It does do some off on type things occasionally. It might be related to the range to the gateway. But that is the whole idea of getting one right? The house is average size about 2100 sf and the gateway is at the back corner in the closet. That is where it came installed. The extender is about half way to the front so it should be sufficient to reach the front of the house. Notice those little antennas on the side- they rotate so I rotated the one on the right side down toward the gateway and it seemed to clear up the signal loss. What sparked me to even buy this was because my Canon printer says it is wifi to my PC and its signal would not reach back to our gateway. Canon would not supply the usb cord to hook to PC.
Poor Instructions But Not Too Bad If You Use a Mobile Device
February 28, 2015
The way to connect this extender is by using a Kindle Fire, Android Tablet, iPad or other mobile device. The instructions are not very clear on what you need to install the device. So if you assume you can install this device using your desktop computer and that you'll be able to find the "wireless manager," you probably will have difficulty. In fact, some of the online questions for Netgear and Microsoft are where do you find the manager and how do you make it work. Unfortunately, the answers are typical techno-speak and basically difficult or impossible to follow. So for those who cannot read between the lines of the instructions, the way you install this is:1) Plug in the device. It will probably take several seconds, sometimes minutes, before the power light registers green. Do not despair. The instructions won't tell you that this will take some time, but it does.2) Get out your iPad, Kindle Fire, or other WIRELESS tablet or device. DON'T EXPECT TO USE YOUR DESKTOP computer to make the connection. Go to the "Settings" of your wireless device and wait for it to recognize your router name plus a suffix ___EXT. When that appears, choose that wifi connection. You will be asked for the same password you use on your real router. Enter that password.3) You will be taken to a website for setting up the extender. If you try to access this website from your DESKTOP computer, you'll get an error message. Once you get to this website, the instructions in the package will start to make sense.4) When you've finished the set up, unplug the extender and take it to the location where you want to boost the wireless connectivity. Again, using your mobile device (or other computer), use the "Settings" menu to find the widi connection. Choose the network connection with your wireless name PLUS the ___EXT suffix. The password will be the same as your regular wifi network. The devices in proximity to the extender will receive a better wifi signal. I think the device is fine, but the instructions were not very well done. I think it would be helpful if the writers had made it clear that you need to use a MOBILE device (not just a computer, tablet, etc.) to set this up. In other words, you cannot set this up (at least not that I was able to discover) with your regular desktop computer. With an iPad or Kindle Fire, the process is very easy and provides decent boosted wifi. I gave this a the three-star because this installation process could have been so much clearer with more precise instructions or even a quick little video.UPDATE: Well, we just had to upgrade our router/gateway. I am sorry to say that this extender was just as bothersome to set up using the reset as before. My instructions still worked BUT you cannot do this on an iPhone. For some reason even after you enter the correct router password, the latest iPhone OS will not let you access the continue button. I was able to set this up using my Kindle Fire HDX. I have since purchased this router: MSRM US750 750M Dual Band Wi-Fi Range Extender Wireless WiFi Repeater With Dual External Antennas and 360 Degree WiFi Covering, which was much simpler to set up and seems to be providing the same level of access. (I did use an iPhone to set it up.) I tested both extenders using a dead spot/download speed app, and they appear to work about the same. (There also are less expensive versions of this MSRM router that others say work well.) So, I've turned off my Netgear router...for now, but am keeping it as a back-up.

Good but not the best for the price!
March 8, 2015
This extender has good range but won't remember prior devices that were wirelessly connected unless one goes into the setup menu and enters and saves their MAC addresses. Not hard to do but not quite intuitive. It also occasionally disconnects from its wireless connection to the main router. I also have TP-Link extenders and have found them much easier to set up and they don't experience disconnects.
looks ok if you buy Brand New one forTecnical Service Help
November 27, 2013
I never buy Refurbished item I rather pay little more and but brand New one but after I read most reviews I decide to buy this one for my smart TV I read lot of reviews but no one is telling the correct way about how to set it up or installing. I plugged in the outlet next to router and wait till the orange light turn green so I open my IPhone or any other device which has to work with this wireless so opens netgear setup page you have to choose your router then click ok then if you have a password you have to enter the same password and click ok then last step finalize confirm and you should see 4 LED light ON on your Extender that's what every one saying four LED light should be ON but mine was only three light ON some time the third light was blinking so I don't know if should be like that or not? because every one they just write easy setup plug in and that's is it NO Is not like that so after half day trying to make it work and I can see in my smart TV the signal was full but NO Internet connection I contact with contact netgear customer service they say they cant help for free because Item was Refurnished even if there was a small sheet inside the box says 30 days warranty with technical support but they didn't help me at all so I decide to send it back waiting for the UPS to come and pick the item back .
works great,,,,,, until it doesnt.
October 9, 2013
ok, its a refurb, maybe thats it, maybe its not. MOST of the time, it seems to carry the signal at a good solid strength. Then, other times, it seems to be struggling to stay connected. Again, maybe its my router, by I doubt it. Set up isnt that hard, takes 15-20 min on avg. You do need to be a little computer savy, not a lot.I have 2 in the house, one upstairs, one down. one does seem to work better than the other, just not all the time. Have gone thru some " 1 bar " out of 5 issues, reset it to factory, re-set it to connect to house network, and seems to be fairly consistent now.Odd thing, some devices seem to connect better than others. Wifes laptop does fine upstairs, but not down. my tablet has no problem downstairs or up. same type of units up and down, so who knows.low price... few glitches,,, but still worth it.
Don't follow the instructions.
June 21, 2013
Product seems to work okay once you get it installed, but installation is a nightmare IF you attempt to follow the often conflicting, often non-applicable sets of instructions found on the Netgear site. The Netgear unit wasn't identified in the way described. It was given some non-sensical identifier which I was able to identify by turning the unit on and seeing what popped up on my screen as a router not seen before. The mywifiext.net link only served to take you to Netgear's homepage rather than to the Netgear unit you are trying to install. To make the unit work, you'll need two wireless laps and an ethernet cable. Turn off the wireless on one laptop and connect it to the Netgear unit using the ethernet cable. Plug in the Netgear unit and turn it on. After boot-up, type 192.168.1.250 into a browser window. After a minute or so the installation software will appear. If needed, Admin is the user and password is the needed password for log-in. Using the wizard, find the router you are trying to connect to, check box and proceed. Replace the assigned router name to something meaningful, preferably your basic home network with an .ext extension. In security, type in the password for your existing modem. Then connect. Be sure that the type security checked matched your router. In my case it was WEP, rather than WPA. Now on the other laptop search for the Netgear extension unit under the name you gave it as an available network, attempt to connect using the password you assigned. It should work, at this point you need to acknowledge this by hitting the acknowledgement button on the other computer where you are running the install software. From that point forward, either tell your wireless computer to connect through your basic home system or the .ext "extended system" you created.
Instructions NOT included

The product, itself, is well-designed and works like a charm. However, there is a slip of paper in the box that tells you that in lieu of a CD or instruction manual you can download the software and guide from Netgear, giving only their main web address. Check the Netgear site before you buy: they have nothing for this product code but a note saying all support is handled by specially contracted sellers. Nevertheless, all is not list, as the product is very easy to use.The key is to know the intranet address to go to the control panel for the device. with the device plugged in about halfway between your wireless router and your wireless computer, the intranet URL is [...]. Once there, everything is pretty self-explanatory. You pick a wifi, provide the password, and select a new name and password for your extension network.Technical details:Resist the temptation to use the same network name as the original (good to just add "_EXT"), because then when you are in range of the original it will go at 1/4 speed from passing back and forth 4 times. This is NOT dual band. If the original is N then the extension is N. If G, then G. It has a fixed frequency, I think, maybe the one that old IPhones are stuck on.
good but not great
September 8, 2012
This little guy is really easy to use. You plug him in to a wall socket, then use a wifi capable laptop or other device to search for him (NEATGEAR-EXT). Once you connect just open a browser and you will be taken through a setup wizard. After the wizard if you want to customize settings you will need the to log in; as another reviewer said use "admin" and "password" to do that. This is NOT documented in the package anywhere. Our situation is that the dsl service entry is in the basement :( so the wireless router down there has a truly weak signal anywhere in the house, in fact it's not visible in most parts of the house.Part of the problem is the house. When I look toward where i know the wireless router is sitting, that line passes through at least one cement slab. I think also that these old walls may be lathe and plaster which means boards tied together with rows of wires that they use as a skeleton to mush the plaster onto.Anyhow :)PRO:easy easy easyable to customize settings a fair bitincluding turning off wps pin for better securityCON:no instructions in boxnot super strong radionot possible to disable WPS button on device (so can't keep your kids off network without using complicated mac address based access controls)UNKNOWN:I don't know yet if i can daisy chain these things but i'm gonna have to find out cause i need at least two more to cover the whole house

Invest more in a better device or different manufacturer
July 13, 2017
It's ok when it works. My setup was kinda rough as I had to reset(to factory default) the device about 5 to 6 times before it finally with through all the steps without messing up somewhere along the way. Now that it's up and running it often has to be turned off and on again to regain connection even though it's well within range of the router. Works great when it actually works but what can you expect out of a $30 range booster I guess. On the fence buyers should consider spending more on a better built device.
weak signal even at short distance form main unit.
July 10, 2017
This thing just doesn't send out a strong enough single and will loose my connection on occasion. I only have it about 25 feet from my main unit so not sure why this would not work properly. Would not by again based on issue.
Definitely doesn't live up to the reviews
May 5, 2017
I ordered this because it is a dual band extender and I have a dual band router (a Google Fiber box, to be specific) and I wanted to boost the signal to some areas of my house where it has a hard time reaching. Setup was okay, but could be better. Not exactly plug and play. I ran into a few difficulties getting the webpage for the extender to load (not to mention the fact that it logs you out within like 5 minutes of no activity - really far too quickly if you are trying to do several things at once). Once I did that it took me several tries to find a spot in my house where the thing would actually pick up a signal from my router. I finally got that settled and managed to get the 2.4 Ghz band working just fine (which is the only reason I'm giving this 2-stars instead of just one). However, I ran into plenty of problems with the 5 ghz band. It simply refused to recognize that it was there at all. On the web page for the router it showed that it was there but wouldn't connect. I can log directly onto the 5 ghz band (on my original router) on my phone so I know it works. The 5 ghz extension appeared on my phone but when I would log on it would say there was no internet connection. On my laptop the 5 ghz extension didn't even show up as an option. I went online and searched forums for Negear and for Google Fiber and found that this is not an uncommon problem with this particular extender. However, after trying all of the suggestions on the forums I still couldn't get it to work - even when the extender was plugged in just a few feet from the router.Having run out of options I contacted Netgear support and after exchanging several e-mails with a person who was - bless him - trying to be helpful but obviously didn't speak English as a first language, he finally told me to return the product. All I want to do is extend the range of the wifi in my house. It shouldn't really be this complicated. I chose this product because of the majority of positive reviews it has. Guess I should have paid more attention to the negative ones.
Stronger, but unstable, connection.
April 6, 2017
I bought this to improve the WiFi connection for my Xbox one. I was getting some lag in online multi-player games. After setup, which was very easy, the lag got much worse. All the lights were solid green, but the game became almost unplayable. While the signal strength does appear stronger, the connection seems to be very unstable.
Easy setup, but useless performance speed
April 3, 2016
I give it 2 stars instead of one, because the setup is elegantly easy. But even with it near my router it gives only a fraction (1/4 to 1/10th) of the speed of the primary signal. Further away, where one has to put it to do its job, the speed falls to a pathetic fraction of 1 MB. I tried loaning it to a neighbor to solve their range problem, thinking it would work better with their higher speed Comcast service than mine, and it was useless there as well - it couldn't support a Chromecast device for NetFlix video. But I've had it too long (2 months) to return it, so I'm out more than $30. Is it the "best seller" just because it is cheap? (In another residence I have a different brand of extender which performs properly - and I am tech savvy. So it ain't me.)
Worked great, until after 6 months
February 5, 2016
This product originally worked great! We had an issue that our router was installed closer to one side of the house, so we bought this to extend our wifi range to the other side of the house. It really fixed our issues of poor wifi signal initially, but after less than a year, this thing fails to connect to any devices. I have re-started the little device multiple times and even moved it to different locations, yet it still does not work. I even attempted to restart my devices, forget the network, and set it up again, yet no luck. Such a bummer that Amazon won't help me solve this problem, it's "ineligible" to return or exchange because it's older than a month.I can't believe how unreliable this device is, I would expect a longer lifetime than 8 months.

Cannot connect one extender to another - Unable to use the same SSID
October 28, 2014
I purchased these, hoping that I could extend my current SSID throughout my home. After about 4 hours of troubleshooting and factory resets I finally got it working - or so I had hoped. It turns out that neither my I devices (iphones, ipads) nor my chromecasts (3 of them) will connect to these devices. All I wanted was to have one SSID broadcast in my home and to connect all of my devices to them with a good solid signal. Not only was I not able to get them to communicate under one SSID (requires different SSID identifiers) but they won't connect to one another which means that they're only beneficial if you're trying to extend your current SSID broadcast by one device. Example. Router A can connect to Extender A,B and C; however they cannot be setup like this: Router A connects to Extender A which connects to Extender B which connects to extender C. I've used plenty of extenders like this in the past but this is by far the worst of the lot. I deeply regret buying 3 of these. The only way I would ever recommend using one of these would be if you were just going to buy one to extend your network and connect ONLY to basic laptop or desktop devices. Even still, a pain in the back to work with.
A gamble that is most likely in your favor
September 14, 2014
I'm sure that many of these wifi extenders are good but one thing I do suggest taking into consideration is that there is a chance of receiving one that does not work correctly or not even at all. Mine worked for about 2 minutes and then just went out. My honest assessment of this product is that if you do get a working one it is an excellent investment but for long time use especially if you have a gaming console that uses wifi along with multiple cell phone and PC's then I suggest getting a more expensive extender, then it will most certainly be a sound investments. I hope this review helps in ur decision making.
DOES NOT WORK
September 1, 2014
Item did not work. Although we were able to connect it to our current router it gave us an unsecure network. When we called the support line the only thing they said they could do was offer us a $200 security system. We declined and thus, returned this range extender! If you wish to own a range extender for an unsecured internet connection this go ahead a buy this; otherwise, don't waste your money!!
Purchased with serial no. blacked out & Assurant Protection Plan (may not cover it)
May 12, 2014
Purchased this & the serial number was blacked out so the protection plan may not cover this if something goes wrong in the next 2 years. Netgear offers a 30-day hardware warranty for refurbished products. Of course we all know that something will happen after the 30 days.As far as connection goes it does work & has extended my range to where I need it. I just hope that it does not disconnect intermittently like others have said. For the price it is good since the new one is double the cost. I hope since it is refurbished they have fixed the internals so that the problems that happened in the first place does not happen again.
Not happy
October 2, 2013
I had high hopes since Netgear is a big name in the internet/ IT products. However, my experience with this product wasn't great. The idea was to have an uninterupted and long range internet service throughout the house but the product didn't live up to the expectations. Here are the problems:1. It goes on standby after a few hours which causes unexpected interuptions weather I am watching anything via online streaming, listening to webcast lecture or simply surfing on the net.2. I didn't find the range to improve significantly. The rooms that are further away from the router still have patchy signals even with the range extenders.Given my experience, I don't think I can recommend this product to anyone.
A product that works only so-so
September 2, 2013
I bought this product to be able to use WiFi in parts of the house that barely had coverage and I can say that it does in fact work as it should but it doesn't do a good job of it. I was able to extend the WiFi signal and make our internet connection more usable in that area of the house but there are several things you notice when using this extender. The first is that network latency increases by quite a lot so network connectivity feels unresponsive (but once a page starts to load it will do that without problems). It is also hard to gauge the bandwidth you get between the extender and the main WiFi adapter. To me it seemed to vary quite a bit giving an uneven user experience.I spent a lot of time making adjustments and testing placements and so on but while it worked and while I got a better experience using it than not having it at all, I was never satisfied with it. When additional devices were connected to it, performance got even worse. I should not that the unit itself always gave me indications of performing as well as it could be.The other day it started giving me grief in that it was connected to the network and I could connect to other devices/machines in the house but it would not connect to the internet. I could reset it and it would work for a day or so but then loose internet connectivity. So I bought myself two powerline network adapters and a WiFi access unit to replace it. A more expensive option of course (about twice as expensive) but I am now getting much better latency and bandwidth without the hassle.

Hate it. This made my already slow internet speed even slower, but did improve the range of the signal. But in my opinion how do you really justify that? If your speed sucks but you get a good signal how is that working? Setup was pretty easy though, but took a couple of tries. I had to manually go into my iPad settings in order for it to connect to this device, it basically makes a different network to connect to
and it almost felt like it could have been gathering information or something (paranoid
June 21, 2017
This didn't work for at all. I would have to manually switch networks on my phone or laptop, as did my husband. It also started acting very strange, making us put in our wifi password repeatedly. After a week, I reset it, unplugged it, and destroyed it. I'm very wary about this kind of stuff, and it almost felt like it could have been gathering information or something (paranoid, I know). In the end, I just asked my provider for a better modem that would actually work for my whole house.
WORST CUSTOMER SERVICE IMAGINABLE. This is the only bad review I've ever written.
May 4, 2017
NETGEAR has the absolute worst customer service I have ever experienced. I've written hundreds of reviews and this is the first 1 star I have ever given. I love their products, however if you need to contact them expect a 3 week process with 30 emails back and forth. It was a very simple question on how to get the 5 Ghz working. The 2.4 works great. The 5 Ghz signal will not extend past the router to the netgear extender. You can not get in contact with a real person. All emails are they send back are automated. My Netgear router works awesome. The extender not so much. If you ever have a problem don't expect any help from them.
Product did not work despite correct installation would not recommend to anyone

The extender did not work as required. One of my PCs connected successfully, the other could not. I used exactly the same parameters on both. After considerable frustration, I called the Netgear help desk. They tried to be helpful, but clearly were not sufficiently trained to address the problem. They suggested I take my desktop, which could not connect, to a technician. Cost of technician ca. $200, cost of router $29.79. I would not recommend this product to anyone.

Absolutely terrible speed. Set up was easy and it extends our wi-fi to the whole house, but the performance is absolutely unacceptable. Drops the signal often and even when it's working it takes the download speed of my primary wi-fi from 50 Mbps down to 10 Mbps. It's so bad, if I'm trying to do something on the internet I walk to an area of my house where I can get my primary wifi signal, which is what I had to do before I bought this.
Last Netgear Product I'll Ever Buy

Long time Amazon Prime member that's literally ordered hundreds of times. First time I've been compelled to leave a review. That said, I ordered this device about 8 months ago. Setup was fairly straight forward, but I also benefit from a heavy tech background. I could see a non-tech person maybe struggling a little, but it's not too bad. Worked okay until today. Not as fast as connecting directly to the router, but not significantly slower either. Did struggle with the device maintaining a connection, so most morning when going to my computer, I'd need to reconnect and wait for all the emails and other data transfers to completely. Wasn't ideal, but I dealt with it. Only drawback was I'd often set Google Drive to pause during the day and and then resume at night so it wouldn't bog down my internet speed for other tasks. Today the device simply stopped working. Lights were all on and green, but would not broadcast as seen across 3 separate devices. Tried to restart it, to no effect. Finally did a factory reset and though it did broadcast, I could never connect. It just times out. Reset it several more times, same deal... So I called Netgear support and after 15 minutes of reading serial numbers and handing over personal info, they attempted to sell me a 'support package' for $89 for 6 months, $129 for 1 year and $199 for two years. Netgear supports their hardware for 60 days. After that, you're left high and dry unless you pay for a ridiculously over priced support contract to be able to talk to a support rep that is clearly overseas. Mind you the device sells on Amazon new for $29. So, BUYER BEWARE!!! Sucks to add this hunk a plastic to a landfill, but obviously Netgear is expecting it or hoping you'll pay their ransom to maybe get your device up and running. Never again... After having owned many Netgear devices and purchased many in professional environments, I WILL NEVER EVER PURCHASE NETGEAR AGAIN. Further, anytime it comes up, I'll insure everyone in listening distance is made aware just how bad Netgear's support is. BUY AT YOUR OWN RISK.

Defective unit sent to me and cannot return
September 10, 2015
I bought this nearly 2 years ago and forgot about it. Today I opened it up out of the box and attempted to connect it. It does not work. The power light LED that is supposed to turn green once plugged in for a minute stays an extremely dim and flickering amber and it does not show up on my network list as the directions (which it didn't come with so I had to find it online) said it should. And now it's too late to return it, even though it's never been touched until now.Furthermore, when trying to contact Netgear Support, I was disappointed to find that Amazon scratched out the serial number before they sent it to me, thus rendering my online support impossible.Very disappointed, but I probably should have expected this knowing that it was so cheap and considered "refurbished".
I should have known better.....

This extender was DOA right out of the box! My gut feeling told me to stay away from a refurbished part, but I talked myself into it since I bought a refurbished iPad in the past with no issues. (I guess that's the difference between Apple refurbished items and these jokers!) I realize I purchased a refurbished item, but upon opening the box i found the unit "wrapped" in what appeared to be a sandwich bag. There were no instructions in the box; just a single piece of paper referring me to the netgear website. Also, the serial number on the back of the unit was crossed off in black marker. I guess this is a lesson learned for me not to be so cheap and just spend the extra few bucks for a brand new item.
WARNING DON'T BUY FROM THESE GUYS!!!!

Their products are unreliable. The Netgear unit started getting intermittent after a few months. It would work for a while and then go into an error state after sending some traffic through the device for awhile - you get disconnected and can't reconnect to it after that. If you recycle the power, you can get it work for awhile again. It got to the point were it would only work for about about 15-20 mins before needed another power cycle. It is basically unusable at this point.Conveniently for them, their standard warranty expired on the device and the refused to replace it. I asked them if they would give me a discount on a new one and they declined. Luckily, I purchased a 2 year SquareTrade warranty for the device, but these idiots blacked out the serial number on the device. Why the hell would you do that unless you are trying to hide something. I am trying to file a claim anyway, we'll see what happens. Amazon should not being doing business with people like this - they are selling bad products and have bad customer service. I DON'T RECOMMEND PURCHASING ANYTHING FROM THIS VENDOR!
Don't buy one refurbished!
December 26, 2013
Just like the customer on August 10, I purchased a refurbished extender and received one with a blacked out serial number. I was unable to get any support from the company because of the "missing" serial number and found that Netgear has a policy of not supporting refurbished units without paying a $40 fee. For an extra $40 I could have gotten a brand new one.None of this information about what refurbished truly means was in the Amazon description or was indicated by Netgear when I received the merchandise. By the way, after I finally got it working it died completely 4 months later.
Sometimes it works and I get an extra 5 feet, most of the time it doesn't.
October 5, 2013
I'm not exactly sure why I have such difficulties, but "customer support" is nigh on non-existent. I get about 5 extra feet using the extension (way less than promised), but that's only some of the time. Most of the time I get spotty reception or no reception at all. I'm constantly having to shut it off, reset, and even restart my computer or Kindle....and then it's hit or miss if I get any signal. If you enjoy frustration and appliances not working right, then you'll love this.
Great seller - but merchandise didn't work
March 14, 2013
First of all, this is not a criticism of the seller. I got the merchandise within a day of ordering it, and it was well packaged. I would buy from them again in a heartbeat.I probably received a defective product. I'm not a super-tech by any means, but I can follow directions. I've installed home networking products before with no problems. After about 4 hours of frustrating anxiety, I gave up and decided to return it.I tried installing using the "easy install wizard." No luck. The PC's could find the extender, but the extender couldn't connect to the router. I moved the extender into the same room as the router (about 15 feet away, direct line of sight) I still got a red LED on the "link" LED.Then, I told it to accept the connection anyhow, and it told me it was connected to the router, but not to the internet. If I went into my "wireless" settings in Windows 7, I could connect on "home network" but not "home network_EXT."Then I tried installing manually, following the instructions on Netgear's website. Same problem, only worse. At one point, I got an on-screen message telling me "syncing with router," (or something along those lines.) After that, none of the computers in my house could connect to the internet. I could connect to the router, but the router wasn't talking to the internet.I unplugged the the extender. I plugged my laptop directly into the cable modem and I had a web connection. Then, with the router ethernet wired to the cable modem, I plugged my laptop directly into the router (via ethernet) and couldn't get on the web. I eventually disconnected the extender and had to reset the router and reinstall it.I've bought refurbished electronics before and usually have had good experiences. Sometimes "refurbished" is a great bargain. Not this time for me.
