Gets the Job Done
September 4, 2017
I always dread buying printers because every time I research them, they always have negative reviews that are not necessarily helpful, but make me nervous to try them. I am a new graduate student and bought this printer because I needed a more reliable one than the HP deskjet I used in undergrad. So far, I am happy with this product as it was easy enough to set up, and is the perfect size. I had no problems hooking up the printer to my wireless network and laptop, and found it was very easy to print wirelessly. I have not had this printer for very long so I can't speak to its life span, but so far I am pleased with it and would recommend it to anyone who is looking for a quality printer with little to no hassle.
Compact, feature rich, and a good deal!
May 16, 2017
I am extremely satisfied with this printer. It is a relatively compact size. Bluetooth setup was a breeze. It is very quiet when printing. AND, of course, the print quality is very good! Automatic Double sided printing is great. All in all I really could not be more satisfied. For everyday use and space-saving this is a terrific choice for your home office. Also the price is excellent for the features and if you can pick one up through the Amazon Warehouse you will get an even better bargain.
wifi is good.

I replaced my old HP all in one with this one only because I wanted wifi printing and it is great! It has an email address that you can send documents to from anywhere and it will print them! The print quality isn't as good as my old one though. But I love the flat-bed scanner that lets me get copies from books.

After a year with this printer I can say it is ok. Print quality is not as good as my old C5200 though.
It wouldn't recognize the print cartridge last time I changed it so I called tech support and they said this is common and I just had to trash the driver and reinstall it. Took time to get to tech support.
I get new ink cartridges automatically so I never run out of ink.
Idk why people complain about this
January 24, 2017
I'm SO GLAD I ignored the bad reviews on here and purchased this anyway...BEST PRINTER EVER. I was worried because people said it was hard to set up, they had to reconnect it to their phone or laptop or whatever every single time they use it...blah blah blah. I haven't had any of these issues. I own my own business and don't print a lot at home but I've already printed over 100 pages in the last couple months and it's worked flawlessly.
Also- get the instant ink!!! It's so cheap and totally worth it. Spend the $5!! They give you a couple months free on top of that! Like I seriously got ink delivered a week ago and had no idea I was low!

Oh and we're short on space and sometimes pile things on top of it and it will still print just fine. Lol not that it's the best thing to do but hey I figured some other people might wonder if it would be a problem.
Good printer, very modern, automatic INK ordering, can't expect much more from a printer.
November 9, 2016
I never liked HP products until now, but the Envy is so easy to use and even has some nice gimmicks like the tray bar that opens up automatically and protects the sheets from falling down. It is not the fastest printer I've seen, but the quality is very good, and the best feature is that it actually orders ink from HP whenever it comes out. It took me about 5 minutes to set it up including the automatic ordering.
I can pretty much list the main features of this printer:
1) It easily (Really easy) prints from everywhere, including your mobile phone, computers connected to the network, you can even send an email to a designated email and it will print it. You can scan on the spot or from a far, pretty good.
2) This printer removes the worries from running out of ink and where to order it - it orders for you, and the model is different - you pay for pages printed, and not for the ink. For example - $4.99 per month (insignificant cost IMO) will get you up to 100 pages per month, if you need more, they have plans for that too. From here on out - print everything that you want - B&W or color - same costs.

Very happy with that purchase.
Great printer & Awesome Instant Ink program
June 25, 2016
I am a teacher and I bought this printer to be able to participate in the instant ink program. The printer and the iip are great!! The best part of the printer is that it auto prints on both sides! The pics are samples of a projects I printed with this printer. Great printer for the price.

My view as a past skeptic : you should seriously consider Brother!
April 1, 2017
Candidly, I thought of Brother as an 'old' brand (didn't know they were still around) but picked this up because it had the right mix of features. Compared to the Canon's and HPs I've bought in the past, I was super-impressed. The wireless install on the Mac is the easiest I've had in my last 5 printers. No futzing around with CDs, USB wires, outdated an pre-installed drivers. The printer is very quick (to be fair I'm transitioning from inkjet to laser). The refill cartridge seems $5-10 cheaper than its competition.Early days yet, but a couple of areas of potential improvement - power consumption during operation is 500W, which seems to be twice as much as the competition. This is not an energy consumption issue (standby is 0.8W) but causes a flicker in my study lights (where the wiring may or may not be set up for this), I need to see if that is a temporary phenomenon. The other is that sometimes it needs to be told explicitly to print duplex.Compared to the printers I've had (suffered), the pros far outweigh the cons so far.
Works really well if you tweak your settings properly
March 28, 2017
The 'Remote Printer Console' from the Brother website is a must for running this printer optimally by tweaking the settings to work well for your personal set-up. Out of the box it was strangely set for A4 paper, and didn't want to talk to my network, but once I get the RPC downloaded and started tweaking it around a bit, it has been printing beautifully. I love how inexpensive the toner is compared to ink, and the text, even some of the minor graphics, is a vast improvement over my old deskjet. Follow the suggestions for turning on continuous mode, and I solved the deep sleep issue easily with the RPC by turning it off, restarting my computer, and turning it back on. Now it goes into the deep sleep, but the computer wakes it up easily. Very pleased so far.
Excellent Printer
September 21, 2016
This printer is great. We purchased it to replace an HP Inkjet that was constantly running out of ink, it having dried up in the weeks between use. The toner in this Brother printer will never "dry up", and the performance is speedy, the quality is excellent, and the wifi printing works great. The toner seems expensive at first thought, but the fact that it will last indefinitely and prints many, many pages per cartridge make it a very good value.Update 05-24-17: Still extremely pleased with this purchase. We have not yet had to replace the toner cartridge with occasional printing. With our last inkjet printer, we would have had to buy at least 3 sets of cartridges at this point. This printer is still working like a charm and has given us nothing but quality results.
So far so good! Easy WiFi setup and great print quality; affordable toner options
September 12, 2016
It seems almost impossible to find universal praise for a home printer of any price level, and the Brother HL-L2340DW is no exception to that rule. However, I saw it listed on some review sites as one of the top options for an affordable home laser printer, and I was thrilled by the sub-$100 price. Of course, the real expense of home printers is not the initial cost, but ink replacement. Again, I was pleasantly surprised to discover that the first-party toner cartridge was not any more expensive than the collection of inkjet cartridges I had been using on Epson and HP products over the years (and high capacity toner cartridges last MUCH longer than inkjet). Even better, there seem to be well-regarded import/OEM/third-party equivalents for those cartridges costing about 1/3 to 1/4 of the price of the one made by Brother.I've noted a few potential sticking points in reviews - some people had trouble connecting to the printer wirelessly or with a mobile device. I had no such problem with my home WiFi router - it quickly found my router with the one-push connectivity. Even a wired computer (no WiFi) on the same network identified the printer once I had linked it to the router. There was also some mention about needing to activate "continue print" so that you can use the cartridge to exhaustion. I activated the feature easily, and this should address the problem. However, I have not exhausted the factor (mini) cartridge yet, so I can't say with certainty.Print quality on this thing is outstanding - my wife and I both need to occasionally print professional looking documents from a home office for our jobs, and I can finally do that with some confidence. Our inkjet printer's documents look smeary and amateur by comparison.
Perfect high volume printer for less than $100
November 7, 2014
I bought the Canon LBP600D or something like that, and it was awful. No mac drivers (we have a mix in our house). Come on Canon, it's 2014, not 2002, every device should work on Mac, Windows, and even iOS and Android! Get with the times. Anyway, I tried to install that and it didn't work on my PC. I went to install it like every other printer I've ever used by plugging it into power and my PC.. wrong! You're supposed to install the software first. Couldn't ever get it to work, and this is coming from someone who used to setup technology solutions small offices such as printers, servers, networks etc. If I couldn't figure that out, then how can the regular non-tech person?Anyway, onto this printer. The Brother HL-L2340DW setup was a breeze. As easier as you could hope for, really. I placed it on the desk, pulled all the shipping tabs out, and protector pieces, installed the toner cartridge very quickly, then READ the instructions where it says to plug the USB into your computer (unlike the stupid Canon). I plugged it in, Windows immediately said "got it dude, you're good to go". Did a successful test print and moved on to downloading the driver software to setup the wireless. (I don't care to use the CD's hardware come with unless absolutely necessary as the driver on the site is much more likely to be updated). I downloaded the software at http://www.brother-usa.com/support/ModelInfo.aspx?R3ModelID=HLL2340DW#.VF0y6fldXch and installed it using the Wireless method (you have to be plugged in so you can easily setup WiFi on it via your computer, this option in the install is just telling the installation how you plan to use it so it can take the next steps accordingly). I setup the wireless, did a test print from my Macbook, success. Opened up my iPhone and went to the print option on a picture, and there it was, the Brother HL-L2340DW. Selected it, pressed print, and out came the print in absolutely perfect quality. This was a very, very, easy to install wireless printer. I highly recommend it based on it's seamless install and print quality alone. If you search you can find replacement cartridges for $17 that offer up to 2600 full page prints. Not bad. The only complain I have is the built in power cable. Most devices will use the standard 3 prong power cable like you find in the back of a typical PC desktop computer. This one is permenantly attached, not making it easy to buy a longer one if necessary. I have about 4 inches of slack after setting it up, thankfully, but not everyone else will be so lucky. My main purpose for this printer was wireless, random printing of documents. However, I bought it for my girlfriend as she's in her grad program and needs to print about 10-50 pages a day and she was waiting in line at school every morning for 30 minutes to use their printer. I believe, in my experience, that a black and white laser printer is the best way to go for any student looking to print a ton of essays, articles, documents etc. You are paying a bit more initially for the printer, but between the volume of prints it is capable of yielding on a single toner cartridge and the efficiency, it'll more than pay for itself! Think about it, up to 2600 prints for $50 (if you choose to buy the main brand toner replacement, or go ahead and buy the knock off brand for $17 and save money, or heck, look up on youtube "how to refill toner for Brother HL-L2340 printer" and you're sure to see some great tutorials and save even more money!) or you can go out and buy a $30 inkjet printer that gets 200-300 prints per cartridge, but how often do you end up replacing that cartridge? About 5x-10x more than a laser printer. Ink cartridges are about $35 for a complete pack. Multiply that by 5 (how many of those you'd go through to achieve the print volume of one toner cartridge for a laser printer) and that's about $175 depending on the inkjet/cartridges. Suddenly you're in the hole, and the laser printer may still have some life left in it's toner. It really depends on what you're trying to accomplish. We have no plans for photos on this, that's what our simple all-in-one is for. Periodic use, never in volume.Leave comments and I'll answer any questions you might have. Good luck!Summary: I love it, it works great, it was easy to setup, and the design is very modern and incredibly compact!
Printer comparison
September 11, 2014
The only two differences between the HL-L2340DW and HL-L2360DW, which are the two newest printers from Brother in this category are:1. The HL-L2360DW has 10/100 Base-TX Ethernet port to connect the router directly into the printer, and the HL-L2340DW does not have this feature. It will connect wireless to the router, which is fine for most people.2. The HL-L2360DW prints 32ppm b/w while the HL-L2340DW prints 27 ppm b/w. You might never tell the difference.Other than that, all other specs are exactly the same between these two newer printers. Therefore, for most people, the HL-L2340DW will work just fine.

Good Multi Function Printer BUT!!!
August 7, 2017
Good multifunction for the price. Does not have a fax capability. Paper tray will only hold about 15 pages of paper. When printing, a page support device swing out from the front of the printer (support is about 2"x 7") and remains protruding in front of the printer. You have to manually return it to the stored location in the printer. This is guaranteed to be accidently broken off in time, sooner than later. This was purchased for a casual location for part time business and personal use. Performs well in what is does.....But with the small paper load and swing support device Iwould not buy or recommend it. It the lack of a fax, and the small paper load, and protruding paper support does not bother you, then this is a good printer.
"This is a pretty simple solution that not many people know
April 1, 2017
I have not had the problems with this printer that others have complained about. I followed advice from this poster:

"This is a pretty simple solution that not many people know, but here's how to disable the annoying instant ink pop-ups:
You can disable the notifications through Printer Server Properties. (Click on your Control Panel, then the Devices and Printers tab)
>From Devices and Printers. Highlight your printer, then look above for a tab called "Print server properties" across the top. Click the tab, then click the Advanced tab and uncheck both "Show informational notifications for local printers and network printers" boxes. Apply and click OK. Hope this helps!"
A solid triple, but no home run.
March 11, 2017
This wireless all-in-one photo printer does a good job. I had to end up hooking it up with a cable, though, because even the HP customer support rep was unable to get it hooked up in wireless mode. I also think that a port for a camera SD card should be standard equipment on these machines at this point, but this one does not come with that feature. Having made those criticisms I will say that the machine is easy to use and scans, copies, and prints well.
I am still having an odd issue with Cloud Print requiring random refreshes but overall its been a great printer.
April 18, 2016
I have had a few wifi printers and the one consistent thing is none of them work the way they claim they will. This printer replaced a Lexmark that was about five years old that I could never get working. This one is the exception to that rule.

Setup took about 30 minutes and in that time I had it printing from devices on our home network, and via Google Cloud Print. I am still having an odd issue with Cloud Print requiring random refreshes but overall its been a great printer.
Would Recommend for Light to Moderate Use
November 13, 2015
HEADS UP -- It takes about 15 seconds from the moment you click "Print" to the moment it completes the first page, and that's without printing any images; only text. Following pages thereafter take about 7 seconds each; I'm only adding this as it matters to those intending to purchase for heavy use. This shouldn't be an issue unless you heavily use your printer (like in a very busy office space). I personally think this printer is best for home use or light office use. I print about 4-5 invoices per day so it really isn't a problem for me.

I do like the touch screen and slide menu feature, and I also really like the sleek and professional look it has. It comes with what's called "HP quick forms" (refer to photos), where you can print out a fax cover sheet, graph paper, notebook paper, calendar, check list, and even some Sudoku and other games; pretty neat. It does have a 2"x7.5" retractable paper holder, which automatically retracts when you hit print. Dimensions are approximately 17.3"x15" with paper holder in; 17.3"x21" when holder is out. The top surface is flat so since I rarely use the scanner, I use that extra space for a lightweight paper organizer. It's slightly textured so you don't have to worry about scratching it if that matters to you.

Setup was extremely easy, both by USB cable and by wifi connection. Took a total of about 8-10 minutes setting up by both methods. I use this printer on two different computer towers, one of which has no internet connection. Never have any issues connecting to the printer or getting it to function as needed on either towers.

Overall would recommend for light to moderate use.
HP 63 (not HP 61) ink cartridges!
November 13, 2015
Caution: this printer uses HP63 (not HP61) ink cartridges. That fact is misrepresented in the Frequently Bought Together section.
I was little disappointed because I thought I would utilize new unused HP61 cartridges from my previous printer. Otherwise, printer seems to be well made.

Some initial wifi issues setting it up; after that it's good!
March 11, 2017
The reason for 4 and not 5 stars was the ordeal I went through to set up the wifi. I'm not a computer engineer, but I'm not an idiot either. Assembling the toner & paper, easy peasy. Synching it to my wifi network, no problem. I downloaded the app and went to add the printer to it, then there was a problem. 'Check that wifi/access point privacy separator option is disabled'. I couldn't find the printer on its own app. So I went through my router settings and wasted a lot of time changing things; long story short you change setting on the printer itself. Under the 'network' option I changed the apipa and the IPv6 settings and then it could find the printer and I was in business.
Finally working with iOS devices over Wifi
January 22, 2016
I have purchased 3 of these Printers. One for Daughter in College (we have saved $$$ by not needed to purchase as much injet ink)One for my Home Office (use it for PCs, Macs, iPhones, iPads)One for my elderly Mother and Father who have to futz with their old inkjet printer each time they use it (they're printing from PCs and iPhones). We all love them. And let’s face it … 95% of what we print doesn't need to be in color. This printer is fast, prints duplex with ease and the ink cartridge last a long time and it doesn't get gummed up like inkjets do after a period of non-use.I’m only giving 4 starts since in the beginning I had issues with iOS devices not finding the printer. I’m not intimidated by technology - but this took a lot of digging to figure out. Now that I’ve finally got the iOS issue resolved these printers are perfect for our needs. This is what I’ve done to make these printers work well with iOS devices:- First - Do Not use the WPS connection mode. Use a Printer USB cable connected to a computer to set up the wifi on this printer. Make sure you find your SSID and enter your wifi password.- Turn off Deep Sleep Mode (google for instructions or find in another review of this printer)- Extend the sleep time (mine are at 50min)- Set Auto Off at 1hr (not sure if this is needed but I suggest it anyway, it will not power off since it will be asleep before the hour comes up)- Once all this is done … power-down the machine and restart it.****** Update *******I found that the printer sometimes goes away and is not discoverable by my Apple devices and the printer must be rebooted. However there seems to be a fix for this as well. If you enable IPv6 Protocol on the printer it is always visible to my Apple devices.Warning this is not for the faint of heart but should be is easy enough for the average user.Step 1)First you must find your printer's network IP Address. Do this by printing out the Printer's Network Configuration. On the Printer:Push the Up Key (+) until you see Machine Info. Displayed and Press OKPush the Up Key (+) until you see Print NetSettings and Press OKA Network Configuration Page will print. On this print out you will find the IP Address (should be something like this 10.0.0.XXXStep 2)Open a Browser on your computer and input this URL: http://<printer_IP_Address>This will open up the web configuration interfaceFollow this navigation to enable IPv6:Network Tab > ProtocolClick on the Advanced Settings link for AirPrintClick on IPv6 (Wireless)>>Select IPv6 as Enabled and make the selection to Enable this Address (no need to fill anything out) and click on the Submit buttonThe Printer always shows up as an available device in all our Apple and IBM devices.
If You Have A Mac - Read this first!!
January 14, 2016
The printer functions well and is fairly easy to set up. However, if you have a Mac you need to set up the printer on your computer a little differently or it won't wake the printer out of sleep mode (and you'll be forced to turn the printer off then on before it will print). PC users are unaffected. For Mac Users:Step 1 - Once you have the printer connected to Wifi push the "^" (or "+") button until you see "Machine Info". Press OK, then press OK again on "Print Settings" and it will print 3 pages of settings. Page 3 of 3 is what you want. Look for "<IP Settings>". You'll see "IP Address".Step 2 - Now get on your Mac and go to Settings/Printers and Scanners and click "+" to add a printer. You might see the printer listed under "Nearby" but DO NOT SELECT THAT. Instead select the IP tab and in the Address field type the IP address from the sheet you printed. I should look something like "192.168.1.14". This will force your Mac to use a slightly different protocol and you'll have no problems waking the printer from sleep to print. So there you go. I really like this printer. Responds fairly quickly and setup wasn't bad at all once I figured out that little Mac workaround. Is it a pain to try to insert a Wifi password using two buttons? Yes, but you only have to do it once and I had no connection issues after that.4 stars (lost one for a bit of a setup headache)
Nice except for envelope printing.
March 30, 2015
This is a revised review. My first review was more user error than anything. I am impressed with Brother support!Simple to use, easy to set up, takes up very little space. Fast, excellent print quality.BUT envelope printing is a bother - you have to open the front panel, of course, to insert the envelope. BUT then you must also open the back panel, press down two little green levers, then give print command. This is all to allow straight path for the envelope - which results in excellent and professional looking envelope. Oh, remember to re-set the green levers to their up-position by closing the back door. Then close the front door and you are once again ready for standard paper. That's a lot of steps to print an envelope. Fine if you're doing a bunch of envelopes, but for one-off, well, it's a pain. If you try to print envelope without the straight path, it will come out hopelessly wrinkled.
Everything else works great, however
December 22, 2014
I really, really want to give this monochrome laser printer 5 stars, but there's one big flaw holding me back. Everything else works great, however. The build itself is solid plastic all around, no issues there. It prints great, very fast for me coming from standard inkjet printers. I was concerned setup would be difficult since it has a small one line LCD display, but it's actually pretty intuitive and easy. Connecting it to the WiFi network was super simple, etc etc.Now on to the major flaw: This printer -- along with other Brother printers to my knowledge -- have a "deep sleep" and "sleep timer" feature, which is great if you're wanting to save power and not have the printer on all the time, but it wreaks havoc with Google's Cloud Print feature (which apparently this printer is "cloud print ready"). It took me a while to figure out why every time I tried to print via Google Cloud Print, it would show this printer "offline" and greyed out; it was the printer putting itself to sleep, which is essentially the same thing as it being turned off.Of course this sleep/off issue wouldn't be a problem if you could just wake the printer or turn off the sleep function, but unfortunately you cannot do either, with any ease. Yes you can wake the printer, either by doing a local print job, or touching a button on the printer manually, but that defeats the purpose of trying to print from, say, your office or any location away from the printer. And the sleep function simply CANNOT be disabled. You can disable the "Deep Sleep" modality, but the printer will still put itself to sleep. I tried going through every printer preference window both in Windows and on the printer itself to no avail.
Easy setup, make sure you enable toner "continue mode"
September 17, 2014
The HL-L2340DW has replaced my decade-old HL-1440, and I'm completely happy with it.Wireless setup is a breeze, even without a computer. It took me 8 minutes (timed) from unboxing the printer to my first wireless print on Mac OS X.Thanks to the 16 character LCD display, you can pretty easily poke your way through menus to configure everything about the printer, including Wi-Fi networks (Network -> WLAN -> Setup Wizard). Or you can just use WPS: press a button on your router, press a button on your printer, and you're done. Both methods worked fabulously. Once connected, you can visit the printer's admin interface in your browser to tweak addition settings or configure Google Cloud Print. The printer immediately appeared in Mac OS X 10.9's "Nearby Printers" list, and drivers were automatically downloaded and configured the first time I attempted to print to it. It took a bit longer to set it up in Ubuntu, but it did eventually work under Linux. One word of warning: when the printer decides that it's time to replace the toner, it will simply stop printing, even if there's still adequate toner remaining. Per the user manual, you can "turn on Continue Mode to force the machine to continue printing even if the control panel indicates that it is time to replace the toner cartridge." Unfortunately, "when the Replace Toner error message is active, you cannot turn this mode on unless you change the toner cartridge."...So make sure you turn on Continue Mode early in the toner's life. It's easy to set on the printer itself (General Setup -> Replace Toner -> Continue), or via the web interface.Otherwise, I'm pretty happy. It's a printer.

HP quality at a surprisingly low price
May 27, 2017
See the update below.I have never heard anyone complain about HP printer hardware, and this printer meets that high bar. It is surprisingly small and light weight but delivers impressive performance. Some reviews complain about the "intrusive" Instant Ink feature, that requires the user to let the printer make direct contact with HP to order ink and receive updates. I was a little skeptical at first but a close look at what you get made me give it a try. It does seem to be an economical way to buy ink if you can anticipate and manage your usage. It is based on the number of pages printed and not on the amount of ink consumed. New users get the first 3 months and 300 pages free, which includes delivery of one each color and black cartridge in about 10 days after you sign up. What I have yet to determine is if the printer can tell you how many pages you've printed, because if you go over your 30 allowance there is a $1 charge for each 15 page increment after that. So take a close look at the feature and decide if it's right for you. Moving on to the printing, the first page the printer printed was an alignment page. You put that on the scanner bed and the printer aligns the print head. After that I tried scanning a color image and could barely tell the original from the copy. Next was sending an image to the printer from the computer, which meant connecting the two using WiFi. It was a slightly tedious process but one you only need to do once. I found a full size rich in color image and printed it. If I had used glossy paper instead of regular bond paper it would have looked like a photograph. Overall, for the price of printer and ink, I am impressed. I would buy it again.Update: I was really impressed with the printer at first and gave it five stars. But lately it seems to have conspired with Windows 10 and refuses to print. When I go to print a document I get the message that the printer is offline. And yet all other indications are that it is online. This makes the printer nothing more than a paper weight. Very frustrating. I think I will still to printers that connect via USB ports from now on.
It's just and ok printer. Not much more.
April 22, 2017
Going from our Epson 730 that died to the HP was pretty much lackluster results. The tricolor cartridge just doesn't deliver the eye popping color of our older printer. We were in a pinch to get something I wish I would have waited and done more research. If I had it to do over I wouldn't have purchased this printer. I will say that using the HP ink service is nice but it still doesn't make up for lost ground when it comes to printing pictures on this thing.
NOT A PHOTO PRINTER, IT'S JUST A COLOR PRINTER.
November 13, 2016
Update

So, turns out the printer I first bought is a defect, after exchange, the printer works great, though, I thought it is a photo printer, but no, it's just a color printer. NOT A PHOTO PRINTER!
_____________________________________________________________________________________________________________
The "easy set up" process turns out not be easy at all, we had to watch multiple Youtube video to figure out how to set it up and my bf is a UX designer, and we are tech people. The whole setting up and getting started experience was just awful, we made it work eventually without even knowing how we did it. After it finally worked, we are having connection issues, ex. Printer has to be shut down and restart to be really connected even the wifi LED shows it's connected. When it enter sleep mode, and a new job got sent to the printer, it will not awake, and connection will be lost again, it requires a shut down and restart the printer to make it work again. Even shutting down is awful, there are time the display will froze, and never wants to shut down. This product looks modern, but works like an antique, and we would not recommend it to anyone.
A printer designed to sell ink...
September 20, 2016
I've had several HP printers and HP has always made decent products, but it's their software and marketing tactics that let them down and that's a shame.

This is a nice printer as long as it's for home use. Be aware that you will get a pop-up every time you print. I did not opt for the automatic replacement cartridges because I'll go out and get the ink when I need it. I should have that choice regardless of what HP thinks. Don't care that I need to use genuine HP ink cartridges as I've always done that anyway.

I'd be happier if I could get rid of that annoying pop-up. I'll live with this for awhile, then maybe I'll try another brand.
Dark Tidings
September 8, 2016
There are some aspects to this printer I really like and some I really don't. Overall, I'm left feeling just "okay" with the purchase.

This printer is, by far, the easiest I've set up. It reads the network without a hitch and the touch display makes selections easy. Copying is quick enough, as is scanning. I do both frequently, so I'm happy with the functionality there. The paper tray makes duplex printing possible at long last. And, for the price point, it is a fairly quick little printer.

Then there are the things that make me unhappy. The paper tray is located at the front bottom of the print and can get block by anything on the desk (I know, big whoop, but still...). The paper support swings out when you print. When you no longer need it, you have push it back in place or risk snapping off this thin piece of plastic. I sometimes confuse the location to lift the scanner cover and open the door to the inside of the printer instead.

Now the big one. It's a really big one, too. I hope I've got your attention because it is the one thing you should remember about this review. No matter how good the printing of text and simple images looks, when you print your really nice pictures or other images with detail, they look horrible. Every image is muddied with darkness and too much ink. I have a good idea why this happens (it's rather technical with the handling of RGB images in with a CMYK printing tool). From the HP forums, they know this happens, but don't address the issue. Their stock response seems to be for us to check the driver, software, run diagnostic tools, and print in draft mode.

So, if you aren't printing images, but are printing graphs and graphics, this is a decent printer to purchase. Just don't expect a photo printer for this price point.
Great Quality Pictures but Uses TONS of Color Ink
September 6, 2016
UPDATE: I have been using the printer for about two weeks. The picture quality is GREAT; however, I went through the starter color ink cartridge AND another store bought FULL cartridge with only having printed 14 full color photograph pages. Unfortunately, this has forced me to sign up for the Instant Ink Program, which is $36/year (which guarantees me 50 pages per month). I have spent over an hour on the phone with HP to get this far and to insist they send me another ink cartridge for free since I should get more than 10 color copies per $15 ink cartridge. This is so frustrating

ORIGINAL POST: I just received my printer today. It is much larger physically than I expected (I didn't look at the dimensions), but that wasn't a problem. It took about 15-20 minutes to set-up, but was very easy with step-by-step directions in the box. I test printed a full page picture on plain copy paper and it looks great. I also printed four pictures on a piece of glossy photo paper and it looks great as well. I am very pleased so far with the printer. I have never had a photo printer before, so the quality of the pictures is 100% better than when I was try to print pictures on a regular printer.

Great except why can't anyone design a sleep mode that actually works?
July 18, 2017
Decent printer so far. Only gripe is the deep sleeping that it can't wake from. I've had to reinstall drivers a few times to get things working again. I recently went in and changed some settings on the printer panel the might help out:1 - Get to General Setup then press OK, get to Ecology then press OK, get to SLEEP TIME then press OK, when sleep time is displayed push arrow -down and BACK buttons at same time, DEEP SLEEP displays so now change to OFF using arrow buttons, press OK button. We'll see how this works out.2 - I also adjusted the SLEEP setting to 50 min (max setting) which probably won;t do anything but heck why not try.3 - Changed the toner mode to Continue Mode prior to the toner running out. Ge to General Setup then press OK, get to Replace Toner then press OK, use arrow button to change from OFF to Continue.
worst menus ever, won't work on wireless, but is cheap and fast
April 16, 2017
I do not like this printer at all. Every time you get into the menu, this thing spits out multiple sheets of paper, because it prints its status rather than displaying it, as it only has a one-line display. Don't ever push "print settings" in the menu, because it literally prints three pages of settings information whenever you do so. It seems like it was designed by forestry executives, really.I still cannot get it working wirelessly with my Mac, despite seeing it on the network. It just doesn't work. Won't print, can't access its web page, spent hours, just won't do it. Maybe I'll call Brother tomorrow and see if they can help...However, it's cheap, fast, and works fine on USB. Whatever. If you need b&w for a small office or home business, and you're on a budget, here's your huckleberry. Otherwise, spend more and get something better, IMO.
Does not include a LAN Ethernet connection.
July 26, 2016
No LAN Ethernet connection. WiFi/USB only! I've purchased several of the older models (HL-2270DW) for our offices and they've always been simple to plug into the network via Ethernet and they are rock solid. This newer model ditches the Ethernet port so you are left with WiFi only if you want to connect this to your network. The wireless setup is not necessarily difficult if you know what you're doing but it's far from reliable compared to a good old hard wire connection. I'm disappointed that Brother excluded Ethernet connectivity on an otherwise great printer. I will not be buying any more of these because of this.
Difficult to install, plus lousy instructions came with printer and on on Brother Website!
December 6, 2015
Wow, this was quite a difficult journey to install the HL-L2340DW printer as a wireless printer on my home network on my Windows7 laptop. The printer is finally working just fine but it took hours for me to setup and get running properly. The final solution came from a 2 hour call to Brother support line...45 minutes with initial technician, 45 minutes on hold for Level5 support engineer, then another 15 mins to get it setup correctly. Basically, my initial issues came from following the "simple" instructions that came with the printer and using the drivers that came on the CD...don't do either of these!! Download the latest drivers from the brother-usa.com/support/ website for your machine type. If you download the full driver version, I believe a wizard will guide you through the setup. It is still not straightforward which choices to make along the setup wizard journey, but you stand a good chance of success using this method. Also, DON'T setup the wireless connection to your printer using the "one step" button for WPS or AOSS. This can enable only a temporary connection so says the Lev.5 technician. This is another mistake I did initially. I was connected to the printer just fine, then the next day...no more connection unless I went through the wireless setup again (not something anyone wants to do each time they use the printer for pete's sake!). To connect the wireless you should use the printer LCD menu, choose Network Setup, and choose setting to input your network name and password from the panel (typing in the password is a chore using the up/down arrow buttons to pick the password characters, but you only have to do it once). Once that is done, you can setup the printer using Windows Add-Printer setup or driver wizard from Brother and you'll have good luck. The Brother tech support is good, but I don't envy you being on the phone that long. There's actually good information on the Brother web site, but it's mixed in with all kinds of bad setup information as well. Maybe just call Brother from the get go if you don't have comfort with the steps described above.
A great printer but had trouble with installation.
April 26, 2015
I have been a fan of Brother printers and it is heartbreaking for me the way this printer is performing. The AirPrint simply does not work and the printer has to be rebooted every 30 minutes. If you do not want to use AirPrint and wish to connect directly then this is a great printer. But if AirPrint is critical for you then stay away. Brother support is clueless and 4+ days since I opened a ticket they have not even acknowledged the problem, let alone fix it. Luckily I have been able to connect to the printer via USB, but if I want to print from a mobile device I have to reboot the printer then wait for 4-5 minutes and then print. I read a review indicating that it was a firmware issue, and I wish I had paid heed to it. I believe all the positive reviews are prior to the upgraded firmware which has broken AirPrint. So please be warned!Update as on 05/16/2015: Brother support did a great job in walking me through the installation process, and the printer works quite fine. The key was to NOT USE the "AirPrint" option while installing the printer on the Mac, instead use the CUPS option. I have upgraded my rating of the printer.
Finally printing from a Mac (OS 10.8.5) after having trouble finding printer (once in deep sleep mode)!
April 8, 2015
I would not recommend this printer to anyone looking to print from a Mac because it was a huge pain to set up and then keep it working properly (read on to understand why!). I'd keep looking for a better option with foolproof installation on all platforms.I bought this printer based on the good reviews to print both from my kid's chromebooks and my MacBook Pro (OS 10.8.5). It took longer than it said it should to install including enabling Google cloud printing for the Chromebooks, but I was able to print from both devices. However, the next time I tried to print from my Mac, it could not find the printer. After some research online, it appeared this was due to the printer being in deep sleep mode and the printer not automatically waking as it should when sent a print job. I didn't think this would be too bad of an issue if I could remotely wake the printer each time before sending the job. But when I accessed the printer settings page (http://10.0.0.130 for my printer) I could verify the printer was in sleep mode, but there was no way to change it or wake it up. I was annoyed at the thought that I was going to have to walk over to the printer every time I wanted to print and press one of the buttons to manually wake it up before sending a print job (defeats the purpose of having a wireless printer!), but the printer didn't even wake up pressing its buttons (despite the manual saying this should work).Alas, more research revealed that the REAL problem might be my Mac wasn't finding the printer because of its IP address. I was first clued into this by dupuytren in this thread -- http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=1849993 -- where he said that the printer and router address need to be similar, i.e. starting with the same numbers as in 10.0.0.XXX. His weren't and changing his printer ip to be similar to that of the router fixed his problem, at least until he ran into another issue that caused him to buy another router (no thanks!). But this thread (http://www.fixya.com/support/t6151863-mfc_7840w_printer) gave me hope my Mac still wasn't finding my printer because of its IP address. So (thanks to dupuytren instructions) I looked up and verified my printer's ip address on the printer itself:1. On printer press Up/Down or +/- button until you see Network. Press Ok.2. Using Up/Down, follow WLAN>Press OK>TCP/IP>Press OK>IP address.3. Write down IP address, including all 0's. Mine was 010.000.000.130Then I went on my Mac to see if I could manually add the printer using this IP address. So I opened System Preferences, Print & Scan. Hit the (+) button to add a printer. (Note my printer did not show up on Default tab since my whole issue is my Mac cannot find the printer!) On IP tab under address, entered the IP address I just wrote down (010.000.000.130), leaving Protocol as "Line Printer Daemon - LPD", Queue empty, Name - gave it something useful, Location empty, Use - picked this printer model driver (guess it was there because I previously installed it). Viola! I sent a print job and it found the printer and started firing up!Why did this work? Actually I'm not sure. I find it hard to believe that the when I set up the printer set up on my Mac by IP address that the extra 0's mattered. Though I had previously tried adding this printer on my mac using the IP address without the extra 0's (10.0.0.130) but it gave me an error. Now, I wonder if it has to do with the "WLAN" setting on the printer. I read somewhere that Brother printers won't enter deep sleep if that is on. So may that is why it is printing fine now -- it no longer seems to be entering into deep sleep mode. To check your printer WLan setting, go to the printer page in your browser and under Lists/Reports, print "Network Configuration".Note, one step I had also done (but I don't think made a difference), is change the IP setting on my printer to be static instead of the default auto (used the buttons on the printer and the directions provided by dupuytren). But I don't think this mattered in my solution because I never changed the IP address and it has remained the same since I first connected my printer. But this will prevent it from changing moving forward. As to my rating, I really like the speed and output of this printer but cannot give it more than 3 stars since it was such a pain to get working with a Mac, which is advertised as being compatible with!4/11/25--UPDATESince I got this printer successfully printing jobs from my Macbook, I noticed the printer no longer enters DEEP SLEEP mode only SLEEP mode. I'm not sure what change I made that caused this to happen, but I suspect this is why I am able to print.11/20/2015--UPDATEFor whatever reason, this week I had a problem with my printer set-up. I think somehow the static IP address I set was changed, but the problem it caused was that my kids Chromebooks could see the printer but it was showing as "offline" so they could not send it print jobs. This problem persisted even after I reset the printer to the same static IP address I had been using. So, I figured the best thing to do would be to delete the printer from Google, re-register it to my account and then reshare the printer to my kids google accounts. Well that's when my problems really started! When I went into the printer web interface (http://10.0.0.130 for my printer), selected the "network" tab, then "protocol" and then clicked on Google Cloud Print, I got to the page with the button to "register" my printer with Google Cloud Print. Well it didn't work and gave me an error that it couldn't connect to Google. After calling Brother support, they told me it was a problem with my Google account. I disagreed with them, as it was never getting to the step where it prompts you for your Google account information. After much insistence, the support person escalated my call to "level 5" and said I'd get a call back from a software engineer-type person the next day. Meanwhile, I kept repeatedly going through the network setup wizard (using the buttons on the printer) and lo and behold it finally set it up slightly differently. It automatically used I think DCHP as the boot method and then that caused the "gateway id" and "subnet mask" to be populated with real numbers (previously both all zeros). When I retried registering my printer with Google, it worked! I since went back and changed the boot method to static ip address (it had already assigned the same static ip address value I had been using). The only other parameter difference I noted is ipv6 is now off (had turned on earlier to see if that would help). Needless to say, I printed out all the printer settings, so if I ever have an issue again I can reset the settings to this now working state. As an IMPORTANT aside....in all my research to get this working, I found online directions on HOW TO DISABLE THE DEEP SLEEP (that is not an option in the printer web interface or on the printer itself, well at least not an obvious option). Again, I'm not positive if the Deep Sleep mode being activate is why I had my original problems with my Macbook not being able to access the printer, but I'm pretty sure it was the reason, so I'm happy to know how to turn off DEEP SLEEP and keep it off (as when my new issues began this week, DEEP SLEEP was somehow reactivated on my printer). To cancel DEEP SLEEP on Brother Printer, using the buttons on the printer...(source: http://serverfault.com/questions/416422/brother-4150-cdn-deep-sleep-how-do-i-disable)------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Use arrow buttons to scroll through menu choices...Go to General Setup then OKEcology then OKSLEEP TIME then OKWhile sleep time is display push Down Arrow and BACK at the same time! Then press OK.DEEP SLEEP on/off toggle by Arrow keysOK to SAVE Deep Sleep off.------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Re: brother support, I finally did get a call back (2 days later) from a software engine-type who was more knowledgeable. I had already fixed the problem by then on my own, but he did seem interested in testing some of this out. Also surprisingly he had never heard that the DEEP SLEEP setting was something that could be turned on/off, and said while it might be something they don't want to advertise to the general public, it would probably make sense to incorporate it into their own internal support database.

Frustrating Wireless Printer
July 28, 2017
This printer has a setting that makes it fall asleep after a set amount of time and completely turn off after 2 hours -- to save energy, which is great. But you cannot adjust this setting or disable it. It just sleeps and shuts down, no user input.

HP says that if you try to print something when the printer is off, it will not print until you turn the power back on. This is not true in my case. When I see the printer is off and I just tried to print something, I turn it on and nothing happens. No printing. My print job is in queue, but nothing happens with the print job until I completely shut down the printer and restart it. Because this takes a minute or two, and because I am sometimes in a rush to print something and head out the door, I end up having to unplug it and plug it back in for it to finally process the print job and print the documents I need.

For a while, for unknown reasons, I'd print something when the printer was shut down and it would just turn on and print my stuff. Later, again for unknown reasons, it just stopped doing this. Now it just won't print and I have to shut it down and restart it.

If you have this plugged into your laptop / computer with a cord, you won't have any problems, but I bought this printer specifically for its wireless capabilities and it has let me down!

One star for a frustrating experience, one extra star for the few times it has worked.
It seems like every time I print something I have issues
June 27, 2017
I don't know what's wrong with this thing! It seems like every time I print something I have issues. Usually they seem to revolve around HP's server network that the printer MUST BE connected to otherwise it won't print. Another frequent problem I seem to have is that it doesn't fit the image to the page even though the setting are correct.
This printer had issues with a phantom paper jam
October 30, 2016
I hate to write this since all the research says that this IS a great printer, but upon setting it up I kept having a paper jam issue when there WAS NO paper jam...it printed the test page fine but when trying to scan the test page according to setup directions it kept stating paper jam...lift and open up and blah blah bah...I looked inside: no bits of paper, everything looked to be in place, no broken pieces, all looked fine and dandy inside..researching HP's troubleshooting sites about it there was nothing else I could do...amazon contacted me and we came to the conclusion that this is just a defective printer. So as NOT to diss all over HP, I've had plenty of printers, many brand names and HP still seems the best, only this time I got a lemon. Oh well.
Please don't buy this printer - buy literally anything else.
October 30, 2016
This is hands down the worst printer I've ever owned. I have two major gripes with it.

1) It's marked as a photo printer, but the only feed option is from the bottom, where the paper must wrap 180 degrees around the (3/4" or so diameter) rollers to feed into the printhead. This wrap-around feed wrinkles/creases every photo I've tried to print, even when using HP branded photo papers! The print quality actually is decent, if you don't mind having wrinkly/creased photos.

2) After 2 months it just stopped communicating with my devices. I downloaded the HP printer/scanner troubleshooting software that you're prompted to install when you first get the error - it literally does nothing but asks you to turn everything off and back on, and then if you still have problems, asks you to do that again. Total waste of time. I did eventually get in touch with HP support, and through a chat session was able to provide remote access to my computer, and their service agent was able to get it working. It took over 45 minutes, and he had to download multiple HP software during this time. I was not a fan of this troubleshooting, but it is working now (for the time being).

This is the last HP product I will ever buy. I swore off their PC's years ago, and bought this only because it was the top listed printer on Amazon, however I totally regret that decision. For now, I'll continue to use this piece of junk, but when it comes time to replace it I'll not even be looking at HP (probably Epson, I've had good luck with my Epson printers).
If you want a quality wireless printer steer clear!!
October 15, 2016
Wireless? This printer is HORRIBLE if relying on its wireless "capabilities". It's not very dependable at all. I've attempted to print multiple page projects and it would stop mid project and say it was finished and go back to the home screen. After going online to find out why my new wireless printer constantly says it's "offline" I came to the realization that this is a common issue with this printer. It constantly reads "offline". My issue with this printer wasn't fixed until I uninstalled everything and reinstalled it with a USB cable connected to my laptop. It works fine...as long as a cord is attached which TOTALLY defeats the purpose of purchasing a wireless printer. I'll never recommend this printer to anyone ever. Wireless. Not hardly!!

Problems with Deep Sleep and AirPrint
September 29, 2017
I frequently have problems with this printer going into "Deep Sleep" (as stated on its little LCD monitor) and being unresponsive. I then am forced to turn it off and on again. I haven't yet attempted any of the work-arounds people talked about. Also, even though I'm able to print from my MacBook Pro (late 2016 with Touch Bar), when I attempt to print from my iPhone 7 running iOS 11, it fails to find the printer saying no AirPrint printers are available. So, more headache of me trying to figure that mess out. It should "just work" without my having to do a bunch of crap to settings. The printer is connected via usb to an AirPort Express from ~2012 which is connected wirelessly to an AirPort Extreme from ~2012. The printing itself is nice when it works. Love the duplex.
Still trying to connect it
September 28, 2017
I was supposed to receive it in 2 days, it took 3-4 days. It has been a dew days, and I am still trying to connect it to my MAC laptop. It arrived on a Friday at 8:00pm and Brother's customer service was closed until Monday. I tried registering the product online, and it rejects the printer's serial number as "invalid". After trying for hours, I was able to connect the printer to the internet with the help of my internet provider who acknowledged that Brother could have made the process simpler. However, due to Brother's limited business hours I have not been able to deal with the rest of the connection. I had many printers and this one should not be this complicated.
Bad Quality from Android Print Jobs
August 12, 2017
Printing from an Android device over wifi results in poor print quality. This is not the case when I use the same Android device to print to the LH-L2370DW. I thought I might have a bad printer so swapped it out, but the problem persisted. It cannot be the Print driver or the Android device, so I have to conclude its the printer. I imagine printing from computer might be fine, hence the majority of 5star reviews, but if you plan on sending most of your print jobs via Android device, I would consider a different printer.
Wouldn't install on my Chromebooks
February 27, 2016
I have owned Brother printers for years and have found them to be most reliable. Technical support is a different story. I currently have a Brother laser hard wired to my desktop PC and wanted to replace it with Brother HL-L2340DW Compact Laser Printer, Monochrome, Wireless, Duplex Printing so I could print with my Chromebooks that I love that I print through the PC now with cloudprint. This would save me from having to boot the PC, wait for it to start, waste time with updates and the antivirus and other time wasters involved with MS computers. I only use MS computers nowadays when I need to do something the Chromebooks won't do. After reading many reviews, I finally ordered this 2340.Upon receipt, mechanical setup was a breeze, as was printing from the PC with a USB cable. I also have a new Android smartphone which I don't really use and don't plan on using much. So when I tried getting it to print from the chromebook, I went to Google Play and tried to install the Brother Iprint&scan app, it installed automatically to my smartphone instead of the Chromebook. I tried to install it in the CB again and it told me it was already installed. But the app wouldn't open and work. I worked on the problem, reading and rereading instructions, Googled the problem, went to the website for help (they had a 50 minute wait line), and they shut down before I could get helped. So after about half a day struggling with it, I surrendered and decided to return the printer. In this day and age, February 2016, these things should be easier to install and troubleshoot. It's just better for me to fire up the PC and print that way. Hated to have to return it. For me it's a zero star for difficulty of installation, but I will give it a 2 because it's so well made mechanically.
Good luck!

This printer is good for you if...--You like wasting lots of paper--You like pushing buttons on a printer--If you don't need to print anything! After initial set up, this printer goes into a deep sleep mode and you have to set up the printer again every time you need to use it. And, every time you set it up, it prints the connection settings and/or the printer settings... Huge waste of paper and toner! I'm about ready to kick this printer to the curb and I haven't even had it a month. We have 2 laptops in the house that are a 2-3 years old and one brand new laptop. One of the "older" laptops can't get this to work at all, the other works sometimes; only the newest one can actually get it to work most of the time. They all installed the same software and drivers from the Brother website, and they are all Windows 10.
Perpetually asleep and offline. Buy only if you like spending your time power-cycling it and reinstalling it.
September 24, 2015
Similar to other laser printers in terms of print quality. But an endless source of frustration because it is almost always offline and in "deep sleep" -- seems to be some kind of irreversible coma or brain-death. The not-backlit LCD status screen leaves users in the dark. Navigating the menus using the keys is non-intuitive. The Brother "utilities" software does absolutely nothing on my system, more like "futilities". I am tempted to defenestrate this useless black box from a third floor window, if it weren't for the cleanup it would entail. I'd love to submit it to Blendtec to answer the question "will it blend?". Support website is a nightmare.

Can you imagine even the printer I had 10 years ago works better than this thing
December 27, 2016
This is the first time I'm writing a review on Amazon cause I can't bear this printer any more. DON'T BUY IT. When you receive this thing, you'll spend a whole night to get it installed properly. What's more? Every time you will need more than 15 minutes( includes at least 5 times restarting) to get the printer connected to your device to print a single page. Sometimes it only print half of the page and you will have to start over again. If you're not patient enough you'll never get anything printed out. For last 3 months, it never work as it described even one time. I've bought 3 printers before, they all work well. Can you imagine even the printer I had 10 years ago works better than this thing. Will never buy any HP products in the future.
Arrived in product box, no outer shipping box. ...
December 19, 2016
Arrived in product box, no outer shipping box. Had clearly been used, returned then sold to me. Ink cartridges were already installed and used, corded was wadded up in top of box, inner packaging was damaged and extending paper arm popped out when I opened the box.
Instant Ink program killed the deal for me. Item returned.
November 21, 2016
There is one main reason I sent this back to Amazon. It was because of HP's Instant Ink program. Even thought I opted out of it during setup, I got an 'Instant Ink' popup EVERY TIME I printed something. Hey HP, you asked and I declined, end of story. I can buy my own ink cartridges. I don't need a constant reminder of your money making ink program. I barely print 10 pages or pictures a month..
TAKE A PASS...THIS PRINTER IS A DOG!
October 27, 2016
Worst HP printer ever! I am at my wits end. This stupid printer loses it's internet connection after each print job. I have to constantly turn the printer off to reboot. HP Tech supports answer to this dilemma? TURN THE COMPUTER OFF AND REBOOT. THIS IS THE FIX.

I am going to throw this piece of garbage out the window.

There are better printers out there. You get what you pay for.
(Re-review) Save your Money. Get a Canon printer
September 6, 2016
Just got the printer in, just connected it, half way through set-up and then bam! Fake paper jam. All I had to do was listen closely and notice that none of the cogwheels that were meant to feed the paper weren't moving. Nore were they even showing signs of responding. I'm betting it's a faulty connection. I even called customer service and after being wrongly transferred 4 times, the call time is now going on 39 minutes and I'm still on hold.

By the time of posting this, it has been 1 hour and 20 minutes. The only reason I'm not giving you two stars is because I like how the printer looks.

I will rewrite this review when I get my new unit.

Edit: This is the worst piece of crap I have ever had the displeasure of owning... Not only have both machines failed to connect to my computer, but bearly 7 months have passed and the Printer has already failed. Even with full cartridges, the printer refuses to print anything and constantly skips lines

To add insult the injury. The price of refills are ridiculous! You buy two full refills and its the price of the damn printer! Wanna find a 3rd party to compensate? there are none! save your self the trouble and go with Canon. At least if their machines break down, it's after some rough use. AND, there are 3rd party ink sellers for a fraction of the price.
BUYER BEWARE
January 5, 2016
Buyer Beware. This printer is "HPInstantInk" eligible. This translates to a pop-up in the printer control screen EVERY TIME YOU PRINT until you sign up for their Automatic Cartridge Replacement Service. HP WILL NOT assist in disabling this pop-up. Every time you replace a printer cartridge, this intimidation resets.

I am beginning to hate Brother printers
September 14, 2017
This is about the fifth printer I have bought from Brother. Two big issues: it goes into such a deep sleep, you have to reinstall the printer software to get it to work. So if you like doing this about every two months, despite constant usage, then this is your machine. Second, issue, just as irritating, is it sends out low toner, no matter when you installed it. I bought my last high yield, genuine Brother toner on June 27. I was out of town, (not printing) for two weeks in July. Since then, I may have printed 300 pages. And today, not only does it not recognize the only computer that prints on it, but it also says low toner. 300 pages is not high yield.Printers are cheap, but I buy them to work at least for a year. I got this one in February, 2017.
Bricked After One Year Of Use
July 17, 2017
Beware, if you are just reading reviews people post a few months after buying!Until it bricked itself one year in, I was happy with this printer too. It worked with basic installation procedures, and I didn't mind that princessy, unwakable sleep issue. I just walked over and pushed the button. I don't print that much. I'm still on my first toner cartridge. But two weeks ago, it stopped working completely. Display and wifi light just blink now. It won't turn off with the power button. My computer can't detect it, even plugged in, even when running th Brother Remote User Software package. No way to update firmware or drivers on a printer that can't be found. Trouble ticket to Brother is in, but has produced zilch in the way of solutions.I think this printer is hosed, and I think one year before obselescence is ridiculous. My old Samsung laser lasted 9 years. Booo! And, beware!
Dont waste your money

Probably the worst buy I've ever bought. It prints fast as lightning, if you can get it to print. If you don't mind reconnecting it to the Internet every day and having a small possibility of it actually connecting and printing, this is the printer for you. If you want to print right away and not screw around with it for half an hour or better every time, this is not the printer for you. I'd leave 0 stars if I could.
I bought this printer in Aug 2014 and I've hated it since the day I bough it
November 28, 2016
I bought this printer in Aug 2014 and I've hated it since the day I bough it. Took me three days to get it to connect the first time. Online support is useless. Printer suddenly won't go online tonight. Can't connect wirelessly. Can't connect by USB. Never buying Brother again.
Setting up WiFi is a total nightmare
November 24, 2015
UPDATE 6/29/16I had forgotten how TERRIBLE this printer was to use and setup.I never use it but recently changed out my router and tried setting up this printer via WiFi another try.FAIL!!!!If you used a USB cable, this is fine. It will work.But....... if you are at any time planning on using this printer with a network or WiFi FORGET IT!!!!!!I have had lots of wireless printers and never have I had such a nightmare as with this printer. NEVER!Just spent 2 hours giving it another try using WiFi and still the same old problems.Printer connected to router via WPS, but nothing will print to it.Not from my Apple iMac, not from my Windows 10 PC.Nada. Zilch. So so sooooo very irritated that I ever bought this junk.My older printer, Brother Laser HL-2270DW, works just fine and that connected to my new router in a snap. But this Brother L2340DW? No go.Nothing should be this hard.DO NOT BUY....PERIOD!!!Not WiFi friendly. This just did not want to stay connected to WiFi and the setup procedure is not user friendly.I also have the older model HL-2270DW and that laser is easy to WiFi connect. This newer model is awful, even when using WPS.And if it does connect it drops offline later, and you have to go thru the whole WiFi setup thing again. And it will still keep dropping offline regardless. Even using WPS.I ended up using a wired connection. That worked. Hard-wired to the router. The printer itself other then WiFi setup, the printer itself is great.Nice fast printing and the toner is affordable and lasts a long time. That was another thing with the WiFi, when it was connected it took FOREVER to grab the data before printing a page.Even on simple text. The older model using WiFi prints nearly right away. This newer model takes FOREVER to begin printing.Really awful!!!!My older brother laser HL-2270DW uses my same router and WiFi and never drops offline or has one connection problem.I don't know what or why Brother changed or why this newer model is so much harder to use under WiFi, but it is.If I did not have the router near-by for a hard-wired connection, I would have sent this back.If you get this newer model and must use WiFi.... GOOD LUCK!
Brother Customer Support Hung Up on Me
June 25, 2015
I bought this printer after reading the reviews. People said this was reliable and did what was supposed to do. I found working with this printer very disappointing. From the moment I got it, it seemed impossible to get it to work over my wireless network. After over one hour on the phone with Brother Customer Support, I still could not get it to work. Finally, after much searching on the internet, I found one person who recommended assigning the printer to a static IP address on the network. Someone on the internet! Not Brother customer service. After a few weeks of use, my HL-L2340DW printer just stopped printing two-sided. Again, I called Brother. After, again, nearly an hour on the phone resetting the printer, removing and reinstalling the drivers, the support person from Brother concluded that it was a hardware problem and asked if I wanted the printer evaluated. Translation: Pack up your $100 printer, send it to us, we'll evaluate it for you and... I don't know what the and was because the Brother Customer Support Person hung up on me. I think he mumbled something like, "Thanks for using Brother" or something like that. I was not rude, I was not unprofessional, I did not raise my voice or use any harsh language. I told the rep that I was frustrated and, "could not fight with this printer anymore." To make me pack up the printer and send it to Brother was unreasonable. I guess a necessary step for them, but as a consumer, I can't help but believe there is a better way. All that said, I think hanging up on a customer without provocation is rude, unprofessional, and disrespectful. Not only did I do my homework and land on what I thought was a great product, I devoted several hours of my precious, valuable time to trying to resolve the problems that arose. Yes, I'm disappointed with Brother. For now, I'll print one-sided. That is until my newest laser printer purchase arrives. And, it won't be a Brother.
